<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider obtained a guest list for a 2017 event on "Billionaire Mountain" that featured top judges.</li><li>Law firms paid $10,000 a year for access to such exclusive gatherings – and their clients came, too.</li></ul>Champagne flowed at a 2017 Aspen Institute event, held at a mansion on "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/photos-aspen-red-mountain-nicknamed-billionaire-mountain-neighborhood-colorado-2021-12"><u>Billionaire Mountain</u></a>," where $10,000-year donors and their guests rubbed shoulders with some of the nation's most powerful judges.<br /><br />The Aspen Institute promises "exclusive access to high-level gatherings" for donors in its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aspeninstitute.org/programs/justice-and-society-program/justice-circle/"><u>Justice Circle</u></a>, and the 2017 "speakers dinner" featuring Justice Elena <keyword id="20470454" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kagan" source="keywords">Kagan</keyword> was as exclusive as they get.<br /><br />Roughly 50 attendees RSVP'd, according to two guest lists obtained by Insider. Corporate execs and lawyers with business before the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> mingled with some of the country's most influential jurists. While Kagan was a guest of honor, Brett Kavanaugh, at the time a judge on the DC Circuit <keyword id="19900770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="court" source="keywords">Court</keyword> of Appeals, was also present. The following year, President Trump nominated Kavanaugh to join Kagan on the nation's highest court.<br /><br />The hospitality provided to the judges wasn't anywhere near the scale of the decadeslong relationship between Justice Clarence Thomas and the billionaire real-estate developer Harlan Crow. Kagan's visit to Aspen had a public component, and both she and Kavanaugh documented that the Aspen Institue provided free travel and lodging for the event on their annual disclosure forms.<br /><br />What the guest lists do show is the economy of access and influence that has sprung up around the Supreme Court. Revelations about Thomas and Crow's relationship have prompted calls in Congress for the Supreme Court to adopt its first-ever binding code of ethics. Kagan's appearance as an apparent guest of honor could violate the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uscourts.gov/judges-judgeships/code-conduct-united-states-judges"><u>Code of Conduct for federal judges</u></a>, which bars judges from being a "speaker, a guest of honor, or featured on the program" of fundraising events. But as a Supreme Court justice, Kagan is not currently bound by those rules.<br /><br />The Supreme Court bans justices from attending fundraising events, but it defines them to include only events that raise more money than they spend or where there is a specific solicitation for funds, Kathleen Clark, an expert in government ethics at Washington University in St. Louis, said.<br /><br />"It may not violate those rules as the rules have been narrowly interpreted, but nonetheless, there still is a problem with it," Clark said. "How can you call this event anything but a reward for having given money to the organization? A bonus awarded to those who have already generously contributed?"<br /><br />But more than a hypothetical ethics violation, what the guest list reveals is the perfectly legal way in which the power of the nation's highest court is marketed by third parties as a chance to pay for face-to-face access.<br /><br />Everybody got something: Kagan and Kavanaugh got a free trip to a luxurious destination, Aspen got money from donors, and those donors got privileged access to Kagan and Kavanaugh — an intimate dinner setting where the two jurists, no longer ensconced by their chambers, clerks, and robes, were more approachable than they would be in any official setting.<br /><br /><h2>The benefits of face time with a justice</h2>Kagan's admirers like to recall the time she turned down a proposed gift of lox and bagels from a group of her high-school friends as evidence of her stringent approach to ethics. But the evening at the Aspen Institute demonstrates a willingness to mingle with VIPs who were only there because they'd shelled out five figures.<br /><br />Eleven of the 50 names listed as attendees at the dinner were guests of law firms. They included in-house lawyers for the coal giant Peabody Energy and the convenience-store chain Speedway, both guests of the law firm Shook, Hardy &amp; Bacon. <keyword id="23597093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tristan-duncan" source="keywords">Tristan Duncan</keyword>, the chair of the Aspen Institute's Justice Circle and a partner at Shook, who was also at the dinner, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.shb.com/news/2016/02/supreme-court-blocks-epa"><u>represented Peabody</u></a> before the Supreme Court in 2016 and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.shb.com/news/2018/03/news-cy-pres-case-duncan"><u>Speedway in 2018</u></a>.<br /><br />"Tristan Duncan may be supplying names for 2-3 additional guests," one of the lists said.<br /><br />The Aspen Institute, Duncan, Peabody, and Speedway did not respond to requests for comment from Insider.<br /><br />When contacted by Insider, some attendees said that they didn't remember much of the event, and that nothing inappropriate had happened. Christina Sullivan, who worked for a company that runs apartment complexes called Gables Residential, said that her interaction with Kagan was limited to a handshake and a greeting."shak[ing] her hand and say[ing] hello."<br /><br />"People are all up in arms — the court, privilege, whatever — but I think you're barking up the wrong tree," said Brian O'Connor, a real-estate businessman whose mother, the former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, was being honored at the Aspen event.<br /><br />But hobnobbing with judges can give lawyers and litigants flashes of insight into their values and personalities with a candor and clarity unavailable to the general public.<br /><br />Muslim Lakhani, a Washington businessman, told Insider that he chatted with Kagan about judges and "judicial activism" in his native Pakistan. At one point, he said, Kagan seemed to invoke a higher power.<br /><br />"Once a judgment is made, after that, there's only one court. That's up there," Kagan said, according to Lakhani's recollection. Kagan, Lakhani continued, "keeps that front and center in her mind, something like 'I must pass laws that are correct, because I have to answer for the judgments that I give.'"<br /><br />While Kagan has also spoken about her faith in public settings, it's hard to imagine a Supreme Court litigator who wouldn't jump at the chance to have an informal back-and-forth with her away from the cameras, as Lakhani did.<br /><br />Kagan and Kavanaugh did not immediately respond to requests for comment made with the court's public-information officer.<br /><br /><h2>The uneasy intersection of friendship and self-interest</h2>Hours before the Aspen dinner, Meryl Chertoff introduced Kagan before a public conversation. At that time, Chertoff, a law professor, headed the Aspen Institute's Justice and Society Program. In 2010, she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emFlq9Ng9DE"><u>spoke favorably</u></a> about Kagan's nomination to the highest court. As the head of the Aspen Institute's Justice and Society Program at the time, which was hosting Kagan, she likely would have had a hand in shaping the VIP guest list for the dinner.<br /><br />Michael Chertoff, a former appeals judge who was the secretary of Homeland Security under George W. Bush, accompanied his wife to that dinner. In 2018, the year after the Aspen dinner, Michael Chertoff's consulting company, Chertoff Group, started working directly with the Supreme Court. That relationship <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/03/21/supreme-court-michael-chertoff-00088119"><u>wasn't made public</u></a> until this year. CNN reported that the Chertoff Group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/27/politics/supreme-court-chertoff-leak-investigation/index.html"><u>billed upward</u></a> of $1 million, money that ultimately came from taxpayers.<br /><br />In response to questions from Congress, Michael Chertoff explained that he'd advised the court on security and on a pandemic-response plan. When asked if he maintained "personal relationships" with any justices, Chertoff wrote that he did not have "ongoing or regular social relationships," though he said there had been "occasional social exchanges," "mostly at widely attended events."<br /><br />It's unclear whether Michael Chertoff interacted with either justice at the dinner, or whether there is any connection between the event and his later work for the court, which was handled not by Kagan or Kavanaugh, but by Chief Justice John Roberts.<br /><br />But the presence of so many wealthy and influential people who might want something from the court is itself a problem, Gabe Roth, who runs the advocacy group Fix the Court, said. Roth told Insider that the access economy can create the appearance of conflicts of interests, and said that judges should recuse themselves from cases involving firms or clients who pay large sums of money to meet with them.<br /><br />"I get that Washington is a chummy town and more resources for Court security is likely warranted," Roth said in an email. "But by the same token, given the ties between Chertoff and the justices, the notoriously opaque institution should open up its books to reassure the public that Chertoff's work was above board."<br /><br /><h2>Access to Supreme Court justices is used to reward donors</h2>While ProPublica's reporting on the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-scotus-undisclosed-luxury-travel-gifts-crow"><u> undisclosed gifts and financial ties between Thomas and Crow</u></a> has captured headlines, increasing attention is turning to other ways the rich and powerful gain access to Supreme Court justices.<br /><br />The Aspen Institute isn't alone in dangling Supreme Court access to lure deep-pocketed donors. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/30/us/politics/supreme-court-historical-society-donors-justices.html"><u>Reporting by The New York Times</u></a> revealed that Rob Schenck used the Supreme Court Historical Society as a springboard to build relationships with conservative justices.<br /><br />An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-nonprofit-anti-abortion-access-1"><u>Insider analysis of Historical Society donor and event records</u></a> found that a suite of archconservative activists — including the anti-abortion philanthropist and Domino's founder <keyword id="23597094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tom-monaghan" source="keywords">Tom Monaghan</keyword>, the former Trump attorney Jay Sekulow, and the QAnon proponent and election denier Sidney Powell — had used the society as a vehicle to gain face time with the justices.<br /><br /><a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-donors-politics-4b6dc4ae23aac75d4fccb1bcff0b7e0b"><u>The Associated Press exposed</u></a> how officials at University of Colorado Law School pushed for a larger "donor-to-staff ratio" at a 2019 dinner with Kagan, and how Justice Sonia Sotomayor's taxpayer-funded staff <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-investigation-books-donors-15b60acaffb933ebd21aae0b57b39f7d"><u>prodded the schools</u></a> hosting her to buy copies of her book.<br /><br />All of these events entailed the same kind of exchange. Financial support for a public mission flowed one way, and scheduled private time with Supreme Court justices was dispensed in return.<br /><br />"Obviously, the justices should have friends," Roth said. But if they started becoming friendly with a businessperson or lawyer after joining the Supreme Court, he said, that's more of a red flag.<br /><br />"To me, it's almost like: Who are your new friends?" Tom Cruise doesn't let up on the thrilling stunts in the trailer for 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout'

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>This is not an overstatement: Tom Hiddleston is currently everywhere.<p>The British actor who became everyone's favorite supervillain by playing Loki in the Marvel movies doesn't tire of trying new things. He&#xa0;can be seen playing American&#xa0;<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">country legend Hank Williams in the biopic "I Saw the Light," on TV</span>&#xa0;with AMC's "The Night Manager," even on local TV <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/04/tom-hiddleston-weather" target="_blank">doing the weather</a>, as he did in Chicago, which went viral.</p><p>And it's not stopping.</p><p>In Hiddleston's latest movie "High-Rise," a thriller adapted&#xa0;from the J.G. Ballard novel (available on demand April 28 and in theaters May 13), he plays pathologist Dr. Robert Laing, who moves into a swanky new building and slowly goes mad with the rest of the residents.</p><p>In the last year, we've seen not only the actor's incredible range, but his enviable work ethic, which has allowed him to maintain his blockbuster status (and his global <a href="http://www.bustle.com/articles/78076-15-things-only-tom-hiddleston-fans-understand-because-being-a-hiddlestoner-is-hard-work" target="_blank">fan base of "Hiddlestoners"</a>). He squeezed&#xa0;in the lead role in the upcoming "Kong: Skull Island," before grabbing Loki's staff again for "Thor: Ragnarok," out late 2017.</p><p>Business Insider sat down with Hiddleston at the Crosby Street Hotel in Manhattan while he was attending the Tribeca Film Festival to talk about "High-Rise," why he watched a real human autopsy to prepare for the role, how often he's slept in his own bed in the last year, and what he thinks about no one going to see "I Saw the Light."</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Business Insider:</strong> Has it been fun to do these roles - "Crimson Peak," "I Saw the Light," "High-Rise" - where you play characters who are conflicted and have a lot going on?</p><p><strong>Tom Hiddleston:</strong> I feel immensely lucky that I'm allowed to do so many different things. I have chosen to do those things, deliberately, but not every actor is allowed to do that and that's an immense good fortune to choose different kinds of things to explore. They have all been fascinating for different reasons. Now in your position it's a strange compression of all this work coming out at the same time. Where as for me, each project had its own integrity and focus. It's very peculiar, the work of the last 18 months of the my life has been released in the space of one month.</p><p><strong>BI: Is it daunting to have all these characters reaching the public&#xa0;at the same time?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> Not especially. It's not like I have any control over it.</p><p><strong>BI: It's interesting because we as an audience are seeing you in different characters at once -</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> Is that a good thing?</p><p><strong>BI: I think so. Because we see you using different talents to play these characters at the same time. I don't know if you look at it that way.</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> The actors I've always admired have been actors who have followed their instincts and curiosities and led their audiences into new territory. I think that's what's fascinating - people think they have an idea of who an actor is, and then they go off and do something and you go, "Wow, I never saw that coming." I think that's exciting.</p><p><strong>BI: How was "High-Rise" brought to you?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I talked about it with producer Jeremy Thomas after making "Only Lovers Left Alive" [the indie vampire movie with Tilda Swinton], and he'd been trying to get this made for a long time. The combination of Jeremy with director Ben Wheatley ["Kill List"], and the material of author J.G. Ballard was a thrilling proposition.</p><p><strong>BI: Why was it necessary for you to see a real autopsy done?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> [<em>Laughs</em>] It comes from a very simple place in me as an actor. If you have to preform something on camera, you want to make sure people who actually do that go, "Yeah, that's how you do that." When I played Hank Williams, it was important to me that musicians approved of the way I played the guitar and my singing. So I had to do a lot of work to get that right. Whether it's making an omelet or dissecting a disembodied head.</p><p><strong>BI: But it's just one scene. Did you do more autopsy work in the film that was cut out?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> No. I dissected that head, and let me just say it was a prosthetic.</p><p><strong>BI: Oh, glad we're getting that out of the way for all the severed-head-rights people.</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> [<em>Laughs</em>] Yeah. Beautifully done by the special effects department and we only had two.</p><p><strong>BI: Pressure.</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> Exactly. And the reason I went to the autopsy was there was no one I knew who had the authority of how to do this. I didn't have the first clue. So I simply got in touch with a forensic pathologist in a hospital in England, and I went to see him for an afternoon. I went and watched him perform an autopsy on a human corpse, and it was not an easy experience.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>BI: There's so much madness going on in the movie, and you guys shot it in this quiet seaside town in Ireland. Did&#xa0;<strong>Stockholm syndrome set in with the cast? Did what you film bleed into daily life?</strong></strong><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> [<em>Laughs</em>] No. No. It was very sedate. We all became very close, which was nice. We all stayed in the same hotel for six or seven weeks. But I found it very reassuring that we were in Northern Ireland in a seaside town where you can get fish and chips all the time. The set was a contained madhouse. But we were shooting from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day and we would emerge into the evening covered in all kinds of stuff going, "And that's it for Wednesday." We would go have a shower and meet for fish and chips. That was actually quite healthy.</p><p><strong>BI: Are you a high-rise kind of guy?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I live in a house. I've stayed in high-rise hotels and sometimes I have good experiences and other times I like to have my feet on the ground, as nice as those places are.</p><p><strong>BI: You've been very busy, even by the standards of successful actors. How many times have you slept in your own bed in the last year?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I haven't been home in a long time. Literally in the last 12 months, if I put them all together I would say three weeks.</p><p><strong>BI: Does that make you go a little mad at times?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I'm used to it now. When you're an actor, you go where the work is and very little is ever at home. I've learned to feel comfortable, having the things I need. Honestly, it goes with the job. I look forward to going home and there may be a time in later life when I have more responsibilities and need to be home more, but right now it's okay.</p><p><strong>BI: Are&#xa0;you going to take your foot off the pedal soon?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I'm going to put my foot off the pedal a bit before the next Thor movie, otherwise I would fall over.</p><p><strong>BI: You're at an incredible moment in your career. Can you settle, or is that when the good parts suddenly vanish?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> I don't know. You never feel you've hit the peak, that's the predicament. I think you can ask any actor or filmmaker, you never feel like the work is done. It's never possible to say, "That's what I feel about the world, I'll go look after the garden now." I think there are always more stories to tell, there's always more complexity in human life to investigate.</p><p><strong>BI: Is making a movie like "High-Rise" or "I Saw the Light" more satisfying than doing a big blockbuster movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> It's a bit like playing an instrument in an orchestra. The director is the conductor and what you find yourself playing is different. Playing different tunes and music, maybe a solo. Honestly, the experience that I feel more keenly is about pace. Big-budget films, the money is spent on time. You have more time. And for smaller budgets, you shoot more quickly. That can be a good thing and a bad thing. There can be things you feel you missed because you were going so fast, but sometimes too much time gives you too much time to think and question and look from every angle and then you can't commit to the best choice. I have no prejudice in any direction. I love when blockbusters work, there's no better experience, but when a small independent film that's been made for $2 million gets championed, that's thrilling, too.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>BI: That said, are you disappointed in how "I Saw the Light" was received? It was hyped as an Oscar-caliber performance for you, and the movie turned out to be the <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/tom-hiddleston/" target="_blank">worst-reviewed</a> of your career.</strong><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> The difference between me and you and whoever watches that film is that film took me six months to make. I took six months of my life and I thought about nothing else every day for six months, and for anyone in the audience, it's two hours of screen time. As Mike Nichols used to say, "You can make the best film in the entire world and people will still say afterward, 'Is there anywhere that's open for a drink?'" It's part of the rhythm of their day. So of course I put so much into it and it would be lovely to think more people have seen it than I believe they have. The people I've spoken to about the movie have at least caught the passion for which it was made and then of course there are other people who I don't know personally who have found fault or flaws in it, but I can't be the judge. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As an actor, you just have to put your best foot forward every time. Do you know what I mean?</p><p>[<em>The</em><em>&#xa0;interview ends, and as Hiddleston walks&#xa0;to the door of his hotel room, he brings up the reaction to "I Saw the Light" again.]</em></p><p><strong>Hiddleston:</strong> You know, it's a funny thing, I've been hearing that people are positive toward how I did in "The Night Manager," and I didn't do more or less with that than for "I Saw the Light." As an actor, you can never tell. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One."</li><li>"Mission Impossible" does not have a great track record when it comes to female characters.</li></ul><p>In the latest <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-part-one-review-2023-7">"Mission: Impossible" film, Dead Reckoning Part One,"</a> Ethan Hunt (<a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-cruise-mission-impossible-premiere-impressed-every-person-red-carpet-2023-6">Tom Cruise</a>) is faced with an unthinkable decision.</p><p>Save Ilsa Faust (<a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-rebecca-ferguson-wears-leggings-red-carpet-2023-6">Rebecca Ferguson</a>) — his longtime ally and complicated love interest — or save Grace (<a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-pom-klementieff-hayley-atwell-helped-create-roles-2023-6">Hayley Atwell</a>), a newly introduced character clearly set up to be the next woman Ethan has a weird savior-romantic relationship with.</p><p>Being the noble spy he is, Ethan tries to save both, but fate (also known as the <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-7-tom-cruise-motorcycle-stunt-paramount-director-2023-6">"Mission: Impossible"</a> writers) has other plans, and Ilsa is killed while trying to save the newcomer.</p><p>While Ilsa's death is sad, what's even more devastating is that in the 27 years Tom Cruise's <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-stars-who-played-marvel-dc-characters-2023-7">"Mission: Impossible"</a> franchise has been around, she was probably the most well-rounded female character the series has ever seen.</p><div type="image" title="Sarah Davies (Kristin Scott Thomas) was one of the first women close to Ethan (Cruise) to die in the beginning of &quot;Mission: Impossible 1.&quot;" height="998" width="1331" msid="101735770" hostid="261" sizebytes="52820"></div><h2><strong>The women of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise rarely make it past one film</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-cruise-mission-impossible-movies-ranked-worst-to-best-2023-6">Throughout the franchise</a>, a recurring theme has been that Hunt's heroism puts the people closest to him at risk.</p><p>"Mission: Impossible" falls too often into what feminist comic book fans have termed the <a href="https://lby3.com/wir/r-gsimone.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Women in Refrigerators</a>" trope (or "fridging" for short), where a female character is put through a tragedy to propel the story of a male character.</p><p>While male allies of Hunt have also been endangered and killed in the series, violence aimed at women has been discreetly coded into the franchise and often serves as the catalyst for the action. </p><p>In Cruise's first "Mission: Impossible" film, in the opening scene, a female agent has to fake her death and almost actually dies in order for Ethan to complete his mission. </p><p>At the beginning of the 2006 film "Mission: Impossible III," a mentee of Hunt's (played by Keri Russell) is killed while Hunt tries to save her. Avenging her death becomes Hunt's goal.</p><p>Later, in 2015's "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," Ethan's mission is again fueled by the death of a woman. While Ethan has other reasons to chase the villainous Syndicate in "Rogue Nation," his quest is partly fueled by the fact that he's unable to save an unnamed female spy (Hermione Corfield) from death at the beginning of the movie.</p><p>Even women that somehow avoid a terminal fate often don't make it past a second movie and are pushed out the revolving door for another woman to take their place.</p><p>These women range from one-note mercenaries who are killed by the end of the movie (Léa Seydoux and <a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-cruise-pom-klementieff-kick-mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-2023-6">Pom Klementieff</a>), allies whom Ethan mentors (Maggie Q and Paula Patton), or love interests (Emmanuelle Béart and Thandiwe Newton), all of whom are quickly forgotten after the credits roll.</p><div type="image" title="Angela Bassett in &quot;Mission: Imposssible Fallout&quot; and Pom Klementieff in &quot;Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part one.&quot;" height="960" width="1280" msid="101735771" hostid="261" sizebytes="138956"></div><p>Angela Bassett's hardline CIA boss Erika Sloane, who was introduced in "Fallout," would have been a worthwhile character to develop after seeing the resourcefulness of Ethan and his spy group, the Impossible Mission Force, but even the Oscar-nominated actress is demoted to a picture in the background in <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-cast-tom-cruise-face-masks-2023-6">"MI7."</a></p><p>Ethan's wife Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), the White Widow (Vanessa Kirby), and Ilsa are the only three exceptions to this rule, and Julia is almost immediately written out of the universe after "MI3," appearing only as a cameo in two movies since her first appearance.</p><p>None of the women have an inner life, nor are they given the opportunity to ever speak to or interact with each other without Ethan's interference. That's why the MI films fail to pass the <a href="https://bechdeltest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bechdel</a> test — named for comic Alison Bechdel and designed to measure the quality of representation of women in a film. To pass, movies simply have to have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. </p><p>It shouldn't be that hard, but somehow <a href="https://bechdeltest.com/?list=all" target="_blank" rel="noopener">none of the films</a> succeed at that task. </p><p>This brings us back to Ilsa, one of the few women to have any real staying power, joining Ethan's core group of Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames).</p><div type="image" title="Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust in &quot;Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.&quot;" height="720" width="960" msid="101735773" hostid="261" sizebytes="79308"></div><p>Not only is she given a developed backstory, but Ilsa is also the first woman to match Ethan in skill and their relationship dynamic.</p><p>When Ilsa is introduced in "Rogue Nation," she saves Ethan. They quickly form a dynamic where Ethan wants to protect her but also trusts her ability to handle herself. This is why it's especially frustrating when she becomes yet another woman sacrificed to Ethan's hero's journey in "Dead Reckoning."</p><p>Rather than allow Ethan to have a true partner in Ilsa, he's given another damsel in distress in Grace, which has been the norm of the franchise since the beginning. "Dead Reckoning" squanders its female leads by relying on tired, well-worn tropes and traditional gender dynamics.</p><p>At this point, these story formulas are not only dated — they're boring. And if Tom Cruise is really looking to take <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-part-two-release-date-2023-7">"Mission Impossible" to the next level</a>, he should <a href="https://www.insider.com/mission-impossible-7-tom-cruise-why-motorcycle-stunt-done-first-2023-6">stop focusing on impressive stunts</a> and start fixing the poor reputation this franchise has with female characters.</p>

'Mission: Impossible' needs to stop pushing its strong female characters out of the picture

How anti-abortion activists, corporate bigwigs and conflicted parties co-opted a little-known society to buy priceless access to the Supreme Court

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>After Domino's founder Tom Monaghan sold the pizza chain, he had a grander&#xa0;vision for&#xa0;his next project: a university and town built on Catholic beliefs. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is not going to be any pornographic television in Ave Maria Town," Monaghan said in 2004, in a speech on </span><a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB113168144594694575"><span style="font-weight: 400;">his vision for the Florida town</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. "If you go to the drug store and you want to buy the pill or the condoms or contraception, you won't be able to get that in Ave Maria Town."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While Monaghan retracted his statements, Ave Maria has grown into a religious-centric town like no other in the last 12 years, funded in large part by the former pizza CEO. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2003, Ave Maria University opened in Florida, on a&#xa0;temporary campus in what would become Ave Maria Town. Monaghan donated&#xa0;$250 million to found&#xa0;the university, and served as CEO </span><a href="http://ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/press-release-tom-monaghan-steps-aside-ave-maria-u"><span style="font-weight: 400;">until 2011</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. &#xa0;</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Monaghan is known for&#xa0;linking&#xa0;his faith and politics, donating thousands of dollars to </span><a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2007/02/19/the-deliverer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">anti-abortion organizations and measures</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, as well as </span><a href="http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2012/12/17/dominos-pizza-founder-thomas-monaghan-sues-obamacare-law/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">filing a lawsuit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> against Obamacare due to its&#xa0;free contraception coverage. Ave Maria University was founded with&#xa0;similar aspirations of bringing religion to public life, <a href="http://www.avemaria.edu/campus/about-ave-maria/">hoping&#xa0;to mold</a>&#xa0;"the future </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">faithful educators, leaders, and mentors that our challenged society needs."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">"This is perhaps the single most vital task for Catholic academicians: to explicate the truths of the faith, and measure against them the evolving societal propositions or practices in politics, the arts, the economy, etc.," reads the university's&#xa0;<a href="http://www.avemaria.edu/campus/about-ave-maria/">website</a>. "Fifty or more years ago, they included Marxism, Nazism, and Freudianism. Today they include abortion, fetal research, cloning, same-sex 'marriage,' moral relativism, and world terrorism."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ave Maria Town was intended to serve as a planned community where the university could blossom into a major Catholic institute of higher education. However, while the university has banned pornography and other entertainment that doesn't respect Catholic culture, requires modest attire, and expects students to "love God above all things," such direct regulations would be impossible in a town. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2003, real estate developers Barron Collier Companies </span><a href="http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/ave-maria-university-a-catholic-project-gone-wrong-6384870"><span style="font-weight: 400;">agreed to donate 1,000 acres to Monaghan to build the university</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, if the company&#xa0;could develop the nearby land, creating Ave Maria Town.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gov. Jeb Bush signed Ave Maria Stewardship Community District into law in <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj1vYb0rqLKAhVFMj4KHViuAxUQFggdMAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.naplesnews.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fave-maria---a-town-without-a-vote-taxation-without-representation-ep-398563499-343994212.html&amp;usg=AFQjCNFlBmo_KIXnzmNrJfd42dX9HSqtQA">June 2004</a>. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The designation of a stewardship is one used for planned communities that give developers government-like powers as the town is being built. That level of control has raised concerns from critics, as landowners (Monaghan and Barron Collier), not registered voters, </span><a href="http://www.naplesnews.com/news/local/ave-maria---a-town-without-a-vote-now-and-forever-ep-398411826-343995352.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">elect the town's governing board</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Publicly, the town is avowedly open to all. Concerns that Ave Maria is a Catholic town, completely under Monaghan's control, are not reflected in the realities of local laws - but do seem to impact the town's culture.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The most striking and notable structure in Ave Maria Town is the Ave Maria Oratory, a distinctive church in the center of the town. The oratory was established as a quasi-parish in 2008, and regularly hosts youth groups,&#xa0;concerts, and other events in addition to daily Catholic masses. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a town of only about 720 homes, the presence of the Oratory, Ave Maria University, a parochial school, and shops selling saints and religious literature means that Catholicism </span><a href="http://www.naplesnews.com/business/ave-maria-a-bounce-back-success-story-ep-918251092-330699661.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">dominates the landscape</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile, there are no other houses of worship in the town, though Barron Collier spokesperson has said the town <a href="http://www.naplesnews.com/business/ave-maria-a-bounce-back-success-story-ep-918251092-330699661.html">is open to other religious buildings</a>.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While there are no bans on birth control or abortion in the town, the town's only OB/GYN </span><a href="http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/9/30/1332354/-Ave-Maria-University-s-Strangle-Hold-on-Women-Goes-Way-Beyond-Suing-Obamacare"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reportedly refuses</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to prescribe contraception medication to women. There are currently no pharmacies in the town where individuals can purchase birth control, with the closest pharmacy </span><a href="http://www.aveherald.com/news/ave-maria-news/630-new-discount-pharmacy-will-have-presence-in-ave-maria.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">about seven miles away</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. While there are clinics and a dentist in town, there are apparently no hospitals that could provide abortions or birth control. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ACLU has been </span><a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/id/11499702/ns/msnbc-the_ed_show/t/aclu-opposes-creation-catholic-town/#.VpPldpMrKi4"><span style="font-weight: 400;">publicly critical</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of the town since it was founded, with the Florida executive director, Howard Simon, expressing concern that plans for Ave Maria Town may be unconstitutional. However, no case has been successfully filed against Monaghan or Ave Maria. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Additionally, while there have been some residents who have become&#xa0;<a href="http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/ave-maria-university-a-catholic-project-gone-wrong-6384870">disillusioned</a> with the town, many find the criticism unearned.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;<span style="font-weight: 400;">"</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are people of all faiths - and some with no faith - living in Ave Maria," reads a </span><a href="http://www.aveherald.com/news/ave-maria-news/1598-ave-maria-stories-that-were-wrong-7-years-ago-are-still-wrong.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2014 article in The Ave Herald </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">claiming to debunk&#xa0;myths about the town. "Some come because the homes are a good value. Others come to live by a golf course, as many people in Florida do. And yes, some come because the town is built around a Catholic university and offers a family-friendly environment for people of all religious beliefs"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whatever the reason, the town is growing. The Domino's Pizza founder created a Catholic 'paradise' town with no birth control or pornography

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tom Soar</span></p><p class="caption">A lounge area in Google's new London office.</p></div><p></p></div></div>AI research lab DeepMind has moved into <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/googles-new-11-storey-office-in-londons-kings-cross-2016-6" target="_blank">Google's swanky new office</a> in London.</p><p>The startup, acquired by Google for a <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jan/27/google-acquires-uk-artificial-intelligence-startup-deepmind" target="_blank">reported £400 million in 2014</a>, has been given two floors for its 300-strong workforce at 6 Pancras Square, which is also home to software engineers working on Android and YouTube.</p><p>Google has been moving various teams and divisions into the building over the last few weeks.</p><p>Around 800 Google engineers moved in on June 20, while another 2,000 Googlers are expected to move in over the course of the year.</p><p>Only five floors of the building are finished at present but Google expects all 11 to be complete by October.</p><p>DeepMind was previously based out of 7 Pancras Square - a <a href="http://www.techworld.com/news/startups/exclusive-deepminders-among-first-google-staff-relocate-kings-cross-3619513/" target="_blank">discrete building next door</a> that was once a ticket office for nearby King's Cross Station.</p><p>The move brings DeepMind a step closer to the search giant and could be seen as a sign that Google sees AI as an increasingly important part of its business.</p><p>Business Insider was given a tour of 6 Pancras Square office last month by Google real estate executive Andrew Martin and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) architect Steve Smith. DeepMind has moved into Google's new office

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Aidan Monaghan/20th Century Fox</span></p><p class="caption">"The Martian."</p></div><p></p></div></div>With the overwhelmingly <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_martian/">positive reviews</a> and high ticket pre-sales for this weekend, Ridley Scott's latest sci-fi odyssey "The Martian" looks like it will be a big hit.</p><p>But will Academy voters remember it when the Oscars come around?</p><p>The film has the pedigree of Scott (nominated <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000631/awards?ref_=nm_awd">three times</a> for Best Director) at the helm and Matt Damon (an Oscar winner <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000354/awards?ref_=nm_awd">for screenwriting</a> but never for acting), who plays a lone astronaut stranded on Mars.</p><p>However, space movies have divided voters recently.</p><p>On one hand, "Gravity" garnered nine Oscar nominations in 2014 including Best Picture and it won Best Director (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0190859/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Alfonso Cuarón</a>). Pictures</a></span></p><p class="caption">"Gravity."</p></div><p></p></div></div>One thing "The Martian" has going for it is it won't be in competition with another high-concept space movie during this awards season.</p><p>But at the same time, "The Martian" isn't a technical marvel like "Gravity," which ambitiously showcased outer space, including a 17-minute single-shot opening sequence.</p><p><a href="http://www.fandango.com/?cmp=KNC_SP_Google_Main_TM-NAT-Fandango&amp;tsacr=Search&amp;refcd=sBoUTxZwh_dcpcrid67793055897pkwfandangopmte">Fandango</a>'s managing editor Erik Davis believes there's nope for Damon's film though.</p><p>"Hands down, 'The Martian' is a Best Picture contender," Davis told Business Insider in an email. "It's a film that has everything - a great cast, a captivating story, and a fantastic lead performance from a beloved actor in need of a fantastic lead performance."</p><p>Along with Damon, "The Martian" also stars Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, and Michael Peña.</p><p><a href="https://www.yahoo.com/movies">Yahoo! Movies</a>' Kevin Polowy believes it's the film's mass appeal, from people who love lots of science and math in their space tales to those who just want to watch something big and cool on the screen, that gives it a "decent chance."</p><p>"Unlike other recent sci-fi contenders like 'Gravity' and 'Interstellar,' it's essentially a feel-good popcorn flick," he told Business Insider.
