New Delhi, From appealing people not to vote for them to flaunting the unsuccessful tag, changing name in each election to losing huge sums of money in security deposits -- some tenacious <keyword id="20022603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="independent" source="keywords">Independent</keyword> candidates have tried these all but losing elections became a habit for them. Tamil Nadu's K Padmarajan, who proudly calls himself the "Election King", might be the only candidate in the election fray who urges people not to vote for him, so he can retain his tag of being "most unsuccessful candidate", a feat also registered in the Limca Book of records. The 65-year-old tyre repair shop owner also finds pride in his entry in the <keyword id="19981515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="guinness-book-of-world-records" source="keywords">Guinness Book of World Records</keyword> for candidate with most contested elections. He claims to have lost Rs 80 lakh so far in security deposits which gets forfeited every time he loses an election besides expenses for filing nomination amid fanfare. Gearing up for his 239th attempt, Padmarajan has filed his nomination for the 18th <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections from Thrissur in Kerala and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. "I began fighting elections in 1988 from my home town of Mettur, located in Tamil Nadu. I have contested 238 elections so far including against former prime ministers <keyword id="20374221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atal-bihar-vajpayee" source="keywords">Atal Bihar Vajpayee</keyword>, P V Narsimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. This will be my 239th attempt. I pick a unique battle every time," he told PTI. Asked about his campaign plans, Padmarajan said, "I ask people not vote for me, I don't want the votes but I want to continue to hold the tag of most unsuccessful candidate. I don't campaign but when I go for filing nomination, I do that in a grand way." From former chief ministers like Jayalalitha, M Karunanidhi, YSR Reddy and AK Antony to filmstars Hema Malini and Vijayakanth -- the list of bigwigs against whom Padmarajan has contested is long. Indore's Parmanand <keyword id="21190647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tolani" source="keywords">Tolani</keyword> is taking forward his father's legacy who fought elections as independent candidate for three decades. "My father passed away in 1988 and I am taking forward his legacy. I have contested 18 elections so far including eight Lok Sabha and eight Vidhan Sabha. I will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls too," 65-year-old Tolani told PTI. "My father's wish was that we do not have to stop the trend till someone from the family gets elected. If I am not able to do it in my lifetime, my two daughters will carry forward the baton," said Tolani, who is a property broker. <keyword id="21190648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-prakash-kodekar" source="keywords">Vijay Prakash Kodekar</keyword> from <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword>, a retired staffer from state electricity board, has a different agenda behind contesting elections as independent candidate -- advocating zero budget poll campaigns. He can be seen pushing a steel cart on wheels in streets of Latur, where he is planning to contest the Lok Sabha polls. A flex board on the cart says "Main bhi Pradhanmantri". "The message why cannot any poor individual be the Prime Minister of the country. Why this exorbitant expenditure by parties on election campaigns? Polls can be fought on zero budget and the money can be utilised for public welfare," said 78-year-old Kodekar, who campaigns wearing a white dhoti. Having contested 24 elections so far, Kodekar uses a different name for different elections. "Some elections I have contested using the name Vijay, some with 'Rashtrapati' and some with the name 'Znyosho' -- as I am a disciple of Osho. I complete the name change formalities and then I contest the polls using the new name," he said. Hyderabad techie Ravinder Uppula, uses different campaign strategies for each Lok Sabha election he fights. In 2014 -- it was anti-corruption march and in 2019 it was a liquid only fast. "I promise during my campaign that if I get elected, I will get a lie detector test done every 100 days so public who votes for me doesn't feel cheated. That is how our politicians should do as well to weed out corruption," he said. Uppula, however, is disappointed with the poll campaign expenses. "It should not be an expensive deal to canvass in this country, an agenda and the right promise should be enough rather than the poll fray leaving the voters with no choice except voting for a smaller thief or a bigger thief," he added. The strange obsession of the independent candidates has also been featured in the book "The Power of The Ballot: Travail and Triumph in the Elections". Sharing the saga of some of the independent candidates' stint at the elections, the book decodes "why do some people contest every time knowing they will lose?" Kaka Joginder Singh, also known as "Dhartipakad", was a textile-shop owner who contested and lost over 300 elections. He died in 1998. In elections, he always contested independently, and always lost his security deposits. He earned the nickname Dhartipakad after several unsuccessful runs for the post of the President of India. The year with the greatest yield for him was during the tenth presidential elections in 1992 in which he earned fourth place in the polling with 1,135 votes, losing to Shankar Dayal Sharma; it was his best performance. He also contested elections from 14 states of India in the 1990s, mostly for state assemblies. Singh died in 1998. Long before <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> chose Varanasi as an election destination, the city had Narendra Nath Dubey "Adig". Often referred to as Kashi's Dhartipakad, he has been fighting every election as an independent candidate since 1984, losing his security deposit each time. He passed away in 2022.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sagar Tolani is a 36-year-old high school math teacher in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.</li><li>He got a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-authorizes-booster-shot-pfizer-biontech-covid-coronavirus-vaccine-2021-9">Pfizer booster vaccine shot</a> on Monday, September 27 at a local Walgreens.</li><li>The side effects worse than his second shot, but not as bad as the first, he told freelance writer Sarah Prager.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Sagar Tolani, a math teacher from Milwaukee, about getting the <keyword id="11897118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pfizer" source="Orion">Pfizer</keyword> booster <keyword id="11894310" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vaccine" source="Orion">vaccine</keyword> shot. It has been edited for length and clarity.When I got my first <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">COVID</keyword> vaccination shot on March 1, 2021, I chose Pfizer because I could get fully vaccinated in five weeks instead of six. Every week and every day mattered, as my wife was home with our toddler and baby. I felt a similar urgency when booking my <keyword id="11896085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="booster-shot" source="Orion">booster shot</keyword> at Walgreens last weekend. <h2>I teach math at a public high school in Milwaukee, where nine out of 10 of my students live in households below the federal poverty level. </h2>We barely have room to maintain three feet of distance between us in the 24-by-32-foot classroom where I teach up to 23 teens who often don't keep their masks on. We're back to fully in-person school for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, and many of my students still haven't gotten their first shot.I'd been eager to get my first shot to protect my family, but after the side effects hit me, I almost didn't get the second one. I had a fever, chills, and aches for about 24 hours, which I'd never experienced before because I usually didn't get a flu shot before COVID (now I do). Despite being hesitant, I mentally prepared myself before my second shot and stocked up on ibuprofen and every other over-the-counter remedy that could possibly help. In the end, it just felt like I had a bad hangover the morning after my second dose. I took a couple of ibuprofen and that was it. With my 3-and-half-year-old and 15-month-old in daycare and COVID cases on the rise <a href="https://city.milwaukee.gov/coronavirus">in Milwaukee</a>, I felt a sense of urgency to get the booster shot, no matter the side effects.<h2>I didn't want to wait, so I scheduled an appointment as soon as I was able to sign up.</h2>I booked my appointment at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, September 27 at a Walgreens out of my way instead of my regular location, since all of the appointments there were booked.I showed up a few minutes early but there were eight or so people waiting ahead of me. Most seemed to be in the over 65 age group, and one looked about 12 years old with a parent. I got my jab at 4:15 p.m. My side effects were manageable this time - some aches and chills that lasted only that evening - worse than my second shot, but not as bad as my first. I went to bed early after taking some ibuprofen, and woke up fine. I'm waiting out my two-week clock now, hopefully building up some additional immunity to protect my children while we wait for their vaccine to become available. There have already been at least half a dozen positive COVID cases in my school this year, and I have a family history of diabetes and heart disease, so I'm hopeful this shot will help me and my family. My wife works from home now, so I'm the one out there exposing my family to the virus - I feel it was my duty to get the shot.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>You can raise low <keyword id="22982" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="blood-pressure">blood pressure</keyword> by drinking <keyword id="15300" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Water">water</keyword> and eating more <keyword id="6355506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Salt">salt</keyword>. </li><li>Low blood pressure, or hypotension, is considered lower than 90/60 mm Hg. </li><li>If another <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> condition is causing low blood pressure, you may need to take medication or wear compression stockings to raise it. </li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/health-reference" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Visit Insider's Health Reference library for more advice.</a></li></ul>A blood pressure reading <a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/low-blood-pressure">lower than</a> 90 mm Hg systolic (the top number) or 60 mm Hg diastolic (the bottom number) is generally considered low blood pressure, or hypotension. Here's what you need to know about hypotension, when it's considered dangerous, and the best ways to raise low blood pressure. <h2>How to raise low blood pressure</h2>The occasional low blood pressure reading is not cause for concern, especially if it comes with no other symptoms. However, if low blood pressure is persistent and symptoms are present, your doctor may recommend measures to raise it. "We try to raise blood pressure when people have symptoms such as dizziness and fainting," says <a href="https://www.columbiadoctors.org/sonia-tolani-md">Sonia Tolani,</a> MD, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. Tolani says the two most common ways to raise blood pressure are:<ul><li>Eat more salt: Generally, the<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5098396/"> higher your sodium intake</a>, the higher your blood pressure. Long-term, this can put an extra burden on your heart and blood vessels, so you should consult your doctor before adding too much sodium to your diet, as it may increase the chances of other cardiovascular conditions. </li><li>Stay hydrated: Make sure you are drinking water because <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2908954/">fluids increase blood volume</a> and help prevent dehydration. Tolani says both drinking water and increasing sodium is best and tells patients with low blood pressure to have a salty snack - like salted nuts or a pickle - between meals with a big glass of water. </li></ul>For the most part, these lifestyle modifications can help raise your blood pressure. But if related health conditions or prescription medication are causing the low blood pressure, you may need to take other measures. <h2>Pre-existing health conditions require different methods</h2>Tolani says people with <keyword id="6456887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Parkinsons">Parkinson's</keyword> are prone to have rapid swings in blood pressure, which can result in very low readings. Neurogenic orthostatic hypertension is common in Parkinson's disease, with about <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3979788/">40% to 60%</a> of people experiencing low blood pressure readings. <a href="https://www.escardio.org/Journals/E-Journal-of-Cardiology-Practice/Volume-17/low-blood-pressure">Orthostatic hypotension</a> is a condition that causes low blood pressure within three minutes of standing up, and doctors may prescribe medication to help manage it. However, some <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3979788/">drugs for Parkinson's</a> are also known to decrease blood pressure, so you should talk to your doctor about the right medication for both. Diuretics and beta-blockers, which are often <a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/free-publications-women/high-blood-pressure-medicines-help-you">prescribed for high blood pressure</a>, can also lower your blood pressure by too much. If medication is the cause of your low blood pressure, your doctor may recommend <a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/low-blood-pressure">adjusting the dose or changing the medication</a>. Finally, if you have<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sepsis/symptoms-causes/syc-20351214"> sepsis shock</a>, low blood pressure urgently needs to be raised. <a href="https://www.copemanhealthcare.com/about-us/staff/dr-glenn-keyes">Glenn Keyes</a>, MD, a family physician at Copeman Healthcare Centre in Edmonton, says "this is done with fluids, and sometimes special medications (pressors) are used through an IV." <h2>Do compression socks raise low blood pressure? </h2>One lifestyle measure often recommended to raise blood pressure are compression socks, which are <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000597.htm">stockings</a> that put gentle pressure on your legs to move blood up to the heart. "Compression socks increase the blood return to the heart, which helps to raise the overall blood pressure," says Keyes. This is critical for anyone who is experiencing <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/orthostatic-hypotension/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352553">blood pooling in the legs</a>, which frequently occurs with orthostatic hypotension. However, in order to set yourself up for success, it's important to make sure that you're ready to take the leap. With that in mind, we asked industry experts to share how they know when someone is ready to buy an investment property. Here's what they had to say:<h2>1. You're clear on your investment goals </h2>Did you know that there's more than one way to invest in real estate? Tolani Onigbanjo, the owner of <a href="https://www.webuyhousesnorthjersey.com/">We Buy Houses North Jersey</a>, a rehab and rental business, reminds would-be investors that they should have a clear investment strategy in mind before they get ready to make a purchase. "There are several different real estate investment strategies out there, from fix-and-flip to buy-and-hold to wholesaling," Onigbanjo says. "Do your research and pick the strategy that fits best with the rest of your financial goals."With a "fix-and-flip" strategy, you'd buy a home, renovate it, and sell it quickly for a profit. With a "buy-and-hold" strategy, you'd keep the property in your portfolio long-term and rent it out. With wholesaling, you'd contract with sellers to help them find a buyer for their property. Ultimately, the investment strategy you choose will have an effect on the type of property that you'll look to buy, which is why it is important to get clear on your goals before starting the buying process.<h2>2. You have a decent amount of savings </h2>Unfortunately, unlike with a primary residence, there's no such thing as buying an investment property with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-buy-a-house-with-no-money-down-home-loans">little-to-no money down</a>. Since government-backed loan programs (like FHA) aren't typically available for investment properties, you need to have some savings in the bank. In fact, <a href="http://gofindahome.com/">Elias Papadopoulos</a>, an agent with RE/MAX Unlimited in Brookline, Massachusetts, suggests saving up 30% to 35% of your intended purchase price. "Most banks want 20% down and up to three months [of expenses in savings]," says Papadopoulos."Plus, you should have some [savings] left over for repairs to get units ready for occupancy."Lenders look at the amount of liquid assets you'll have leftover after paying your down payment and closing costs for reassurance that you'll still be able to make your mortgage payments, even if something unexpected happens to your regular paycheck.While lenders look for their borrowers to have a certain number of months worth of reserves left after every transaction, the requirements are often stricter for investors.<h2>3. You understand how to run the numbers</h2>At its core, buying an investment property should be a mathematical decision. Before hitting the market, would-be investors should understand what metrics they need to consider. "Fortunately, most single-family homes have predictable cash flow," explains Andrew Helling, a Nebraska-licensed real estate agent and the owner of <a href="https://rethority.com/">REthority.com</a>. "There are many rules of thumb that investors can use to help provide clarity during the buying process." He offered the following as some of his favorites:<ul><li style="font-weight: 400;">Rule of 72: Dividing 72 by a fixed annual rate of return determines how quickly you will recoup your investment.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">1% rule: If you can rent your property for 1% of the purchase price, you should be able to make your mortgage payments using rent proceeds.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">50% rule: On average, half of a single-family home's gross rental income will be spent on operating expenses, like taxes, insurance, vacancy, turnover, and upkeep costs.</li></ul><h2>4. You're ready to take on added responsibility</h2>"Being a landlord is a massive commitment," advises David Reyes, financial adviser and chief financial architect at <a href="https://reyesplan.com/">Reyes Financial Architecture</a> in San Diego, California."If you're prepared and have the time to find qualified tenants, as well as deal with the maintenance that comes with owning the property, then you're ready to purchase it."Even if your goal is to fix-and-flip a home, you'll still have added responsibilities on your hands. In that case, your responsibilities will include balancing budgets, overseeing contractors, and managing schedules. However, in either scenario, it's important to remember that the passive income that comes along with buying an investment property also comes along with additional work. Make sure you're ready to take that work on before moving forward with your purchase. <h2>5. You've assembled a team of qualified professionals </h2>"As an investor, you must ensure that you have a good and reliable team spanning real estate, lending, maintenance, repair contractors, and even maid service," says real estate agent Patrick Fogarty of <a href="https://www.hiltonhyland.com/">Hilton &amp; Hyland</a> in Los Angeles. "You need a team of professionals who can guide you through the buying process," he continues. "When you're a landlord and something goes wrong on an evening or weekend, you'll want to have a relationship with the appropriate contractors who will prioritize you and make an emergency visit to resolve the issue."Be sure to do your research as you begin to put your team together. Read online reviews and ask family and friends for recommendations. 5 signs you're ready to buy an investment property

"It is not unreasonable for an investor to associate rapid economic growth with strong stock market returns," write <a href="https://institutional.vanguard.com/VGApp/iip/site/institutional/researchcommentary/article/InvResLwrGrwthWrld">Vanguard's Joseph Davis, Roger Aliaga-Diaz, Charles Thomas, and Ravi Tolani</a>. "And anyone who regularly follows the financial markets probably has the sense that economic data releases can drive market performance."
In a report titled "<a href="https://institutional.vanguard.com/VGApp/iip/site/institutional/researchcommentary/article/InvResLwrGrwthWrld">The Outlook For Emerging Market Stocks In A Lower-Growth World</a>," the authors examined long-run equity market returns and real GDP growth for 46 countries and found the correlation to be very weak and inconsistent.
"At 4.0% per year, the average real equity market return for the countries with the three highest GDP growth rates was slightly below the 4.2% average return for the countries with the three lowest GDP growth rates, despite the considerable difference in those rates (8.0% a year versus 1.6%, on average)," they found. "It is clear that the correlation between these two variables is weak."
"These results may not quite line up with investor intuition," they write.
