Nowadays, kids' birthday celebrations can put most weddings to shame, with Instagram and celebrities inspiring a seemingly endless game of one-upmanship. But in affluent cities like New York and Los Angeles, $500 can just be the cost of the cake - if you're lucky. <h2>The days of simple parties are over: "We have done kids parties for $350,000, but I would say the majority fall in the $50,000 range."</h2>When it came time for Rachel Pitzel to plan her daughter Harper's fifth birthday party last year, the Los Angeles resident didn't blink at shelling out thousands of dollars for the picture perfect fete. She hired elite party planner and rental service <a href="https://www.teakandlace.com/">Teak and Lace</a>, which has worked with the Kardashians, Nick Lachey and Lily Aldridge. She spent $1,000 on a party stylist to make sure the "Carrousel" theme (spelled the Disneyland way) was cohesive, and cut a check for nearly a thousand dollars on a professional photographer to document the event."I drew the line at a $500 cotton candy stand," Pitzel said of her daughter's bash, which included a huge rack of rented dress-up clothes like tutus, tiaras, bracelets, necklaces, pretend earrings and kids makeup. Pitzel says her pricey affair was entirely in line with what her friends were throwing."The days of simple parties have started waning with the rise of Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy and Amazon," said Pitzel. "Parents spare no expense for the location or food. One party we went to had a manicure truck and a grilled cheese truck, and every girl got a spa makeover complete with nails, hair and make-up, plus robes. "I have seen an insane amount of money poured into food stations, snow hills, entertainment, flower walls, balloon clouds and custom everything. Need an American Ninja Warrior set-up in your backyard? I got you. Need a famous chef to flip burgers on your grill? No problem. If the client wants it - we don't hold back," Huntington said. "We have done kids parties for $350,000 but I would say the majority fall in the $50,000 range."<h2>Embracing their inner child</h2>From a "Singing in the Rain" theme with custom lyric books to a "Little House on the Prairie" party with kids learning how to churn butter, Murat says throwing these kinds of gatherings allows deep-pocketed adults to revisit their childhood days. "They get so excited around cotton candy or even miniature sandwiches; it allows them to feel young again," Murat said. One of Murat's clients, NYC mom Yuliya Zhang, has been hiring Murat to plan her now five year-old son's birthdays since he was one. Zhang, 33, admits she doesn't bat an eye at spending between up to $40,000 on her son's celebrations. Last April, Manhattan mom, Madelyn Mejia, went all out to make sure her five-year-old son's $12,000 knight-themed birthday party was an unforgettable affair."The cake was the most beautiful medieval castle that had been sketched and envisioned by Anne [Murat]," said Mejia. "They're like small wedding cakes."Her recent orders have been filled with requests for $250 volcano cakes complete with buttercream lava erupting from their cores and two cakes connected by a foot-long fondant rainbow that cost $325.And that's not where her edible masterpieces stop. "We'll often do on-theme cupcakes for the adults and personalized cookies as party favors and table decor," said Volk-Weiss, who says those treats typically tack on an extra couple hundred dollars. "I'm busier than ever because parents are feeling more and more pressure to put on photogenic parties that resonate on Instagram," said Volk-Weiss.<h2>Bring on the professionals</h2>Just don't expect the parents to be getting down and dirty with set-up.One Dallas mom, a human resources professional who asked to remain anonymous for professional reasons, said it's not uncommon for toddlers' parties in her neighborhood to have valet services, black-tie servers passing trays of sushi and a full bar service."People have staff-managed bounce houses, characters in costume, deejays, full catering, personalized candy, clean-up staff and paper invitation suites," said the Dallas mom.Even good old fashioned sleepovers are becoming fancy affairs thanks to companies like Trish Healy's <a href="https://www.wondertentparties.com/">WonderTent Parties</a>. Their "SleepOver" package starts at $450 for five guests and includes a tent, plush mattress, blankets, fairy lights, accent cushions and a breakfast tray for each kid. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tammy Coulter said she was a mess when her baby was diagnosed with a rare growth disorder.</li><li>She fought for her child to be included in a trial for an experimental drug to treat the disease.</li></ul>When Ava Coulter had to wear a halo brace to help manage her <a href="https://www.insider.com/hereditary-disease-illness-2018-11">genetic disorder</a>, her mom, Tammy, said people looked uneasy when they saw how it was screwed into the toddler's skull.She said that though Ava was 2 at the time, she picked up on the awkward moments.But, Tammy Coulter said, her husband, Greg, thought of a solution — he told her to jazz up the <a href="https://www.spineuniverse.com/treatments/bracing/cervical-spine-bracing-options-halo-ring-crowns-or-vest">halo</a> with a pretend tiara."It broke the ice," Coulter said. She added, "Instead of struggling to find the right words, people said to Ava, 'Oh, look at the princess!'"Ava was diagnosed with <a href="https://www.chop.edu/conditions-diseases/morquio-syndrome">Morquio syndrome</a> at 14 months old. Children with the disorder lack an enzyme that causes the body to develop and strengthen the skeletal system. It leads to growth issues that affect bones, cartilage, and connective tissue, such as tendons and ligaments.According to the <a href="https://www.chop.edu/conditions-diseases/morquio-syndrome">Children's Hospital of Philadelphia</a>, the condition is estimated to occur in one in 200,000 births.The 52-year-old said that Ava, then 9 months old, was taking a bath when she "noticed that the bottom of her spine curved more than usual."Ava's pediatrician referred her to an orthopedic doctor who said Ava had kyphosis, a curvature of the spine affecting the upper back.In summer 2007, the baby underwent genetic testing. But, the mom said, there was some hope. She said the doctor told her, "I believe that Ava's generation will be the one to see it."<h2>Ava had problems with her mobility and often relied on a scooter</h2>The girl went on to have operations to lessen the effect of the abnormal growth of her bones. Those included surgeries to her wrists, ankles, knees, and hips.She was fitted with the halo, Coulter said, to immobilize and stabilize her spine after surgery. The mom said that the princess tiara on Ava's halo helped normalize the experience.As the years went on, Ava needed a scooter to get around in kindergarten and had trouble with stairs. It was being developed to treat Morquio syndrome.Ava, then 5, met the criteria. But the drug had to be administered once a week at a specialist hospital in Chicago — a 1,250-mile round trip from the Coulters' home in Birmingham, Alabama. The family decided that the mother and daughter should make the weekly journey to Chicago. They hoped that the drug — an enzyme-replacement therapy — would help Ava and other kids like her. "I said we would do it if we needed to," Coulter said.Coulter said each of Ava's infusions lasted four hours. But traveling could be exhausting."There were weeks when it was physically and emotionally taxing," Coulter said. "I'd have to maneuver through the airport with Ava riding on my suitcase, and our flights were often canceled or delayed."But they persevered."God had provided this medicine that people had been working on for decades," Coulter, who has a strong Christian faith, said. "All I had to do was get Ava there and back."Ava was quick to show signs of improvement, Coulter said. She added that her mobility increased dramatically. The researchers monitored her speed and gait during stair-climbing exercises in the hospital."She got faster and faster," Coulter said.<h2>Coulter has written a memoir about her daughter's medical journey</h2>Ava ditched her scooter and could carry heavier items."All the signs pointed to the fact that the drug was working," Coulter said, adding that it slowed the progression of Ava's disease.The Food and Drug Administration approved Vimizim in February 2014, 2 1/2 years after the beginning of the trial. Alana Thompson, formerly 'Honey Boo Boo,' thinks Gen Z is making body shaming worse

It has been edited for length and clarity.People often think my being both an attorney and a pageant coach is an odd combination, but the two jobs have more in common than meets the eye. After all, as a litigator, being in front of a judge and jury is like presenting to the most important panel of pageant judges there is.During my 30 years practicing law, I've had the opportunity to argue in front of the <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/opinion/1113435/garner-v-covington-county/">Alabama Supreme Court</a> and win, so if there's anyone qualified to prepare someone to answer tough questions, it's me. My rate varies between $87 and $175 a session depending on time, work, and what's involved.<h2>People may be able to fake a lot of things, but brains and poise aren't one of them</h2><div type="image" title="Bill Alverson" height="2849" width="3799" msid="90295041" hostid="261"></div>Plenty of people can dress up and get spray tans and hair extensions, but when you're up there on stage representing your county, state, or country, no amount of glitz and glam is going to help you when you're asked about the state of the world.I'm used to getting paid by the hour, so I tell it to my pageant clients straight — there's no sugar coating on my time. I'm not interested in your fascination with "Gilmore Girls" or the Kardashians. If you work with me, you're going to watch the news, read books, listen to podcasts, and have your finger on the pulse of current events. I'm the grandson, son, and ex-husband of educators, and I say if you can nail the interview, you can clinch the crown. Case closed. <h2>I once had a girl competing in Miss Alabama's Outstanding Teen competition</h2>She'd already won a local title, but at this particular pageant, when asked about current events, she started talking about "the civil war in Israel." I mean, she literally made up a war! It was a total bust. This cringe-worthy experience was actually the inspiration for one of the scenes in the 2018 Netflix series "<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6487482/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1">Insatiable</a>," for which I was a producer, when pageant contender Dixie is asked what she thinks of ISIS and replies, "Ices, you mean Italian ices. I just love them. Orange is my favorite."<h2>The majority of my clients are 13 years old and up</h2><div type="image" title="Bill Alverson" height="1155" width="1536" msid="90295044" hostid="261"></div>Little kids are exhausting, and despite having raised three children, I'm not the "get on the floor and play" type, so the toddlers-and-tiaras thing isn't for me. I'm not going to tell a child to wear a flipper (false teeth) or get hair extensions, either. However, I did work with a 5-year-old once who won her national pageant, so really it all depends on the kid, the parent, and the situation.<h2>I've never marketed my pageant coaching services — if you're halfway committed, you'll track me down</h2><a href="https://www.pageantplanet.com/profile/prepwithbill">My track record</a> speaks for itself. I've coached five Miss Americas, two Miss USAs, three Miss Puerto Ricos (two placing as finalists at Miss Universe), and a Miss America Outstanding Teen, with runners-up and state winners in all those programs. I've probably coached 500 girls in my career. Sometimes it's just one session, other times they become regulars. The majority of my work is with repeat clients.These days, the <keyword id="12068701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pageants" source="Orion">pageants</keyword> I'm coaching for most are Miss USA, Miss America, Ideal Miss, and Miss America Volunteer.Unlike the legal arena where you can only represent one side, there's no conflict of interest when it comes to coaching, so it's not uncommon for me to coach more than one girl in the same pageant. In fact, I coached nine girls in the latest Miss USA pageant and seven wound up becoming finalists. I'm very much aware I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and that's OK. Miss Congeniality, I am not. One girl I coached referred to me as the green-eyed monster.<h2>I never set out to get into pageant coaching — I like to think of it as divine intervention</h2><div type="image" title="Bill Alverson with his client Michaela Jacobs, National American Miss 2018" height="620" width="827" msid="90295045" hostid="261"></div>In 1992, my church choir director asked me to coach a local girl for the Junior Miss Covington County pageant as a favor since she knew I could sing and had some theater experience. I agreed, and the girl wound up winning. Soon my phone started ringing with local moms looking to hire me. The more girls I coached, the more success I had on the pageant circuit.But in 2008, things took a turn downhill when the law firm I worked for voted me out and my wife and I got divorced after 29 years of marriage. It was then I realized that pageant work could be the good Lord's way of giving me an alternate source of income to support my family.I managed to find an office space through a pageant girl's father, so I was able to continue my legal work by day and coaching at night and weekends. After my son William passed the bar exam in 2013, we formed <a href="https://www.alversonandalverson.com/">our own law firm</a> here in Andalusia, Alabama.<h2>My coaching workload varies drastically from one week to the next</h2>One week I might not see any coaching clients, while others I might work six or seven hours, and then there might be an all-weekend event where I'm working more like 18 hours.When COVID-19 hit, pageants were canceled for nearly two years, and during that time some girls lost interest and dropped out of the circuit. If I had to guess, I'd say I'm back to 80% of my pre-pandemic clientele. <h2>You never know what will happen at a live pageant</h2><div type="image" title="Bill Alverson with his client Miss North Carolina, Top 7 at Miss USA this year Madison Bryant" height="620" width="827" msid="90295047" hostid="261"></div>Shoes can accidentally come flying off on stage and spaghetti straps can unexpectedly break on gowns. One time a girl changed her into shorter heels at the last minute because her feet hurt, only to stumble across the stage looking like she'd enjoyed a few too many cocktails. Once a fan was set out to keep everyone cool but instead, it blew a woman's skirt up only to reveal a no-panty situation.Awkward moments like these aren't just reserved for the stage, either. I've had my share of male relatives of pageant girls come up to me, eager to strike up a conversation and talk shop while I'm standing at a urinal! There was a time I used to attend more pageants, but these days, I make a point of spending more of my free time with my husband Doug and my family. I still try and judge or attend when I can to keep things fresh, though. No matter the level of competition, the way I see it, purpose, practice, and persistence are what make a true pageant queen. Like I always say, life is a pageant, so why not put it on stage.

The possible penalty for those who violate the proposed ban: a $40,000 fine and two years in prison. That ban would apply to any adult who tried to enter a child into a pageant.
France's Senate voted 197-146 to approve the ban. It still has to go back to the lower house for another vote before it can go into effect.
Some are saying the move is too harsh, and the Associated Press <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/french-senate-votes-ban-child-beauty-pageants-20292818">points out</a> that department stores in France still sell lingerie for girls as young as 6.
Chantal Jouanno, the lawmaker who wrote the amendment, told the Associated Press that <keyword id="6354493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="children">children</keyword> need to "concentrate on acquiring knowledge" and not be fixated on physical appearance.
French news outlet The Local reports that <a href="http://www.thelocal.fr/20130918/french-senate-bans-child-beauty-contests">the law was prompted by a December 2010 Vogue photoshoot</a> that featured provocative pictures of a 10-year-old girl from France.
Child beauty <keyword id="36404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pageants">pageants</keyword> have been popularized in the U.S. by the TLC reality show "<a href="http://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/toddlers-tiaras">Toddlers &amp; Tiaras</a>." The show follows the children who participate in beauty pageants and their often-overbearing parents.
The young participants in these pageants - some are infants - often wear elaborate outfits, fake hair, and makeup for the contests.

France Is Close To Passing A Law That Could Get Pageant Moms Thrown In Prison

What's New On Netflix Streaming In June

Thanks to the fiscally savvy Mama June (who knew?!), Alana and her four sisters will have their TLC earnings divided evenly into individual <keyword id="1782434" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trust-Funds">trust funds</keyword> that they will have access to once the minors turn 21.
"I want my kids to look back and say, 'Mama played it smart. Not like those other <keyword id="2835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Reality-TV">reality TV</keyword> <keyword id="6360040" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="people">people</keyword>,'" June <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2013/01/06/honey-boo-boo-tlc-alana-thompson-mama-june-money-trust-fund-21/" target="_blank">opened up to TMZ</a>. While the Thompson family currently earn between $15k - $20k per episode, the money will be divided evenly into each daughter's account.
So let's say the Thompson clan earn $18k an episode, with <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2288050/episodes?season=1" target="_blank">ten episodes per season</a>, that's $36,000 for Lauryn (12), Jessica (15) and Anna (18) and baby Kaitlyn — per season.
The TLC hit "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," a spinoff of the network's popular "Toddlers in Tiaras," was <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20632847,00.html" target="_blank">recently renewed for a second season</a>.
And Mama June doesn't even have to lift a finger to get the money into her children's accounts.
"TLC puts the money into the girls' trust accounts for me and then I get an email telling me how much everyone gets," the Thompson matriarch continued to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2013/01/06/honey-boo-boo-tlc-alana-thompson-mama-june-money-trust-fund-21/" target="_blank">TMZ</a>. 
But that doesn't mean the rural Georgia-based family are letting the newfound fame and money go to their heads.
"You're never gonna see me drive a Range Rover or a Mercedes," continues Mama June, who says the family gets by from her husband's salary as a contractor. "I'll drive one if someone else pays for it. Never gonna live above my means."
So far, the Thompson's only big purchase since appearing on the show has been a 2005 Ford Expedition.

Why Mama June Put Her Kids' Big 'Honey Boo Boo' Earnings Into Trust Funds

Sort of. 
The streaming site announced <a href="http://www.theflixies.com/">The Flixies</a>, an awards ceremony to honor the way people are consuming entertainment today online. 
The awards are completely fan-based with seven quirky categories highlighting the habits of Netflix viewers. People can vote on categories ranging from Best Guilty Pleasue to Best Marathon <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword> Show. 
And if there's a category missing, users can submit their own. 
On March 11, Netflix will reveal the top three winners in each category. Voting is upon from now until March 10 for both Netflix and non-Netflix members. 
While Netflix refuses to give out numbers for its most popular shows, some of its categories help give insight into the most-watched series on the streaming site.
