The <keyword id="7612156" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="starlink" source="Orion">Starlink</keyword> constellation is, by far, the largest in history, with almost 3,000 satellites in orbit, and offers enormous potential for worldwide connection.<br /><br />Recent research asserts that its signals might be processed and utilised to replace conventional GPS, with or without SpaceX's approval.<br /><br />While there is only so much <keyword id="1123210" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="todd-humphreys" source="Orion">Todd Humphreys</keyword> and his colleagues at the <keyword id="159191" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-texas" source="Orion">University of Texas</keyword> at Austin can learn about the "signal structure" of the Starlink downlink without having access to inside information from the corporation itself, they did uncover a lot of important information, reports <keyword id="179988" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="techcrunch" source="Orion">TechCrunch</keyword>.<br /><br />Satellites must pass their signal down to the ground at some point, and in Starlink's case, it is pretty much a constant stream. That does not mean anyone can tap in, though the signal itself is structured and encoded in a proprietary way that, presumably, SpaceX has decided best for the kind of orbital broadband it's providing, the report said.<br /><br />The exact parameters of this signal are not known, but to make sure packets are arriving in the order and intact, the transmission -- like any data transmission these days -- includes very precise timing data and another telemetry so the receiver and sender can stay in sync. Starlink signals might be processed and utilised to replace conventional GPS: Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>SpaceX's Starlink signals have been <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/09/28/1008972/us-army-spacex-musk-starlink-satellites-gps-unjammable-navigation/">long seen as a possible alternative to GPS</a>. </li><li>In 2020, Elon Musk and SpaceX declined a US Army proposal to develop the tech for that purpose.</li></ul><p>After SpaceX declined to continue researching Starlink as a possible military alternative to GPS in 2020, a group of researchers found a way to do it without the help of Elon Musk — or his company that created the constellation of internet satellites.</p><p>For the past two years, Professor Todd Humphreys has led a group of researchers at the University of Texas in reverse-engineering signals from the satellite internet constellation with the hope of forming a new navigation system that would operate separately from the Global Positioning System and its European, Russian, and Chinese equivalents, <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/?_thumbnail_id=1061968&amp;p=1062001&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=1062001&amp;preview_nonce=6434d74f25&amp;truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=10-21-2022&amp;mc_cid=8108b7afa9&amp;mc_eid=1b17105ade">MIT Technology Review reported.</a></p><p>In a <a href="https://radionavlab.ae.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/starlink-structure.pdf">non-peer-reviewed study,</a> Humphreys claims the group has created a comprehensive characterization of Starlink's signals without breaking its encryption or accessing any user data coming from satellites.</p><p>"The Starlink system signal is a closely guarded secret," Humphreys told <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/?_thumbnail_id=1061968&amp;p=1062001&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=1062001&amp;preview_nonce=6434d74f25&amp;truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=10-21-2022&amp;mc_cid=8108b7afa9&amp;mc_eid=1b17105ade">MIT Technology Review.</a> "Even in our early discussions, when SpaceX was being more cooperative, they didn't reveal any of the signal structure to us. We had to start from scratch, building basically a little radio telescope to eavesdrop on their signals."</p><p>Starting with a Starlink unit programmed to transmit high-definition YouTube videos of Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, the group began tracking the satellite's synchronization sequences and detected their patterns of transmission — about four sequences every millisecond. These sequences — repeating patterns of signals beamed down to Earth by the satellite — help receivers coordinate with them, leaving clues to the satellite's distance and velocity. </p><p>The earthbound receiver, using the timing of the signals received from the satellite and information publically available about its orbit, can then calculate the distance to the satellite and approximate a location within 30 meters, Humphreys told <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/?_thumbnail_id=1061968&amp;p=1062001&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=1062001&amp;preview_nonce=6434d74f25&amp;truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=10-21-2022&amp;mc_cid=8108b7afa9&amp;mc_eid=1b17105ade">MIT Technology Review.</a> With tweaking, the geolocating capabilities could become as accurate as GPS', which tends to be accurate to about 16 feet in commercial use.</p><p>The discovery, while a potential breakthrough for geolocation services, also revealed a possible security concern about Starlink signals — which are currently key to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk-fund-starlink-ukraine-asks-pentagon-pay-2022-10">keeping Ukrainian communication services running</a> as Russia has invaded the country — if used as a navigation system.</p><p>"Humphreys has done a big service to the navigation community identifying these sequences," Mark Psiaki, an aerospace professor at Virginia Tech and GPS expert told <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/?_thumbnail_id=1061968&amp;p=1062001&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=1062001&amp;preview_nonce=6434d74f25&amp;truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=10-21-2022&amp;mc_cid=8108b7afa9&amp;mc_eid=1b17105ade">MIT Technology Review.</a> "But any navigation system working on open-source sequences could definitely be spoofed, because everyone will know how to spot those signals and create fake ones."</p><p>Starlink has become such an integral part of wartime communications in Ukraine that recent outages were described as "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-spacex-starlink-outages-report-2022-10">catastrophic</a>" by officials. Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1581075601049669634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1581075601049669634%7Ctwgr%5E729de1436c6db07b7417e05e95cdf6bb399e3dce%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbabel.ua%2Fen%2Fnews%2F85692-musk-said-that-russia-is-trying-to-destroy-starlink">tweeted</a> this week Russia is "actively working" to destroy the satellites, but Humphreys' discovery — that the signals are predictable and replicable — highlights the possibility for intentional disruption of Starlink.</p><p>"As time goes on and their dependence on Starlink deepens, Ukraine and its allies in the West are coming to appreciate that they have little control over Starlink and know little about it," Humphreys told <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/?_thumbnail_id=1061968&amp;p=1062001&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=1062001&amp;preview_nonce=6434d74f25&amp;truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=10-21-2022&amp;mc_cid=8108b7afa9&amp;mc_eid=1b17105ade">MIT Technology Review</a>. "The National Garden will be built to reflect the awesome splendor of our country's timeless exceptionalism. Trump's picks for his 'National Garden of American Heroes' include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kobe Bryant, and a quiz-show host

Used by permission.</span></p><p class="caption">Okta CEO Todd McKinnon</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>On Friday, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/okta">Okta,</a> the identity company, saw its stock rise as high as 12%.</strong></li><li><strong>Okta reported its earnings on Thursday, where it reported a revenue of $125.2 million - rising 50% from the previous year and beating Wall Street's expectations.</strong></li><li><strong>Analysts say that its new products, as well as its acquisitions of ScaleFT and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-azuqua-automation-earnings-2019-3">Azuqua, </a>will help the company keep growing.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Read more on the Business Insider homepage.</a></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Okta's stock rose as high as 12% a day after it reported its quarterly earnings -  results that show "excellent momentum" for the nearly $13 billion company.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Thursday, Okta reported a quarterly revenue of $125.2 million, a rise of 50% from the previous year, and well ahead of Wall Street's expectations of $116.86 million. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Okta topped analyst expectations for next quarter too. Okta is predicting a revenue of $130 to $131 million, while Wall Street expected it to project $127.54 million.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With all that, it's no surprise that Okta's stock rose about 6% after hours on Thursday, and even higher still on Friday.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The results are even better than we anticipated," Jonathan Ho, partner at William Blair, told Business Insider. "That's reflected in the stock moving up. Importantly, the companies talk about success and new opportunities which helps drive the case for further upside. The company seems to be doing better at winning more."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What Ho means is that Okta has been adding more products, in addition to its core identity and access management product, which could lead to further growth. He says that Okta, which competes with the likes of Microsoft's famed Active Directory, is still in the "early innings of its growth opportunity." </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It helps sustain the growth profile for a longer period of time," Ho said. "If they grow bigger and they only have one product, the growth will have to slow. Now it looks like it can continue longer."</span></p><h2><strong>A "really big" market</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Okta's subscriber base grew by 52% from this time last year. Now, Okta has over 6,550 customers - 104 of whom pay over $100,000 a year, the company disclosed in its earnings report. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The market we're in is really really big. We're really happy with the growth," Okta CEO and co-founder Todd McKinnon told Business Insider. "Part of it is just the business model that is just recurring subscription revenue. It allows us to grow very quickly.". </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the past quarter, Okta launched </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-access-gateway-hybrid-cloud-2019-4"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Okta Access Gateway</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which allows companies to use the company's tools to log into on-premise apps, which Ho predicts will grow in us, given that many enterprises still rely on legacy software. </span></p><p><strong><em>Read more: </em></strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-access-gateway-hybrid-cloud-2019-4"><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">$9 billion Okta started in the cloud, but it's extending into the data center for the first time to reflect the 'reality' of what customers need</span></em></a></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Terry Tillman, managing director at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, agrees about Okta's expanding market opportunity, especially as the company invests in international expansion in Asia and Europe.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"They've been organically building new products," Tillman told Business Insider. "They're adding more products where they can drive revenue for a long period of time."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ho said that Okta is already seeing strong traction from ScaleFT, a server protection company that Okta acquired last July. Okta also announced in March that it will acquire an automation software company called </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-azuqua-automation-earnings-2019-3"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Azuqua</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, although it's still too early to see results.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Still, Richard Davis, managing director at Canaccord Genuity warns that while the company has "excellent momentum," it's possible that Okta will enter a period of dormant stock prices as investors have high expectations.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Indeed, this is something we will monitor with a microscope over the coming quarters," Davis wrote in a note. McCain with a tanker near Singapore was the fourth accident involving ships from the US Navy's 7th fleet in less than a year.</p><p>Two of the incidents - collisions involving the McCain and the USS Fitzgerald earlier this summer - have left <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sleep-deprivation-is-a-silent-threat-to-the-navy-related-to-accidents-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a total of 17 sailors</a> dead or missing, more than the <a href="http://www.npr.org/2017/08/23/545297589/navy-navigation-bungles-may-have-killed-more-troops-than-afghanistan-so-far-in-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">11 service members</a> killed in Afghanistan so far this year.</p><p>After the McCain collision, the Navy relieved the commander of the 7th fleet <span>"due to loss of confidence in his ability to command," according to the Navy. </span></p><p><span>The service <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-us-navy-to-launch-fleet-wide-probe-as-search-for-10-missing-sailors-goes-on-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">also planned</a> a temporary halt of operations around the world and </span><span>to launch a fleet-wide review in search of <a href="http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2017/08/21/mattis-review-will-determine-whats-going-on-with-7th-fleet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">systemic issues</a> that could have contributed to the most recent incidents.</span></p><p><span>The Navy is known for its thorough and unsparing reviews, which have been undertaken in the aftermath of each incident, and <a href="https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Military/2017/0823/Trouble-in-the-Seventh-Fleet-what-may-be-behind-Navy-collisions?cmpid=TW" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">analysts</a> are <a href="http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/the-us-navys-greatest-enemy-might-be-exhaustion-21997" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">already pointing</a> to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sleep-deprivation-is-a-silent-threat-to-the-navy-related-to-accidents-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">internal issues</a>, as well as <a href="http://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2017/08/21/navys-7th-fleet-no-stranger-to-high-ops-tempo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">high operational tempos</a> in heavily trafficked waterways, that could be related to the mishaps. </span></p><p><span>But the number of accidents involving warships in the western Pacific - during "<a href="http://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2017/08/22/at-sea-disasters-came-during-the-most-basic-of-operations-pacific-fleet-co-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the most basic of operations</a>" - has stirred concern that outside factors are affecting the ships and their crews.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Toru Hanai/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald, damaged by colliding with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel, at the US naval base in Yokosuka,, Japan, June 18, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>"There's something more than just human error going on because there would have been a lot of humans to be checks and balances" when transiting the Strait of Malacca, the narrow, heavily trafficked waterway the McCain was approaching, Jeff Stutzman, a former Navy information warfare specialist, <a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article168470432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> McClatchy.</span></p><p>"I don't have proof, but you have to wonder if there were electronic issues," said Stutzman, who is now chief intelligence officer for cyber-intelligence service Wapack Labs.</p><p>Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, <a href="https://twitter.com/CNORichardson/status/899723986908655620" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweeted</a> on Monday that there were "no indications right now" of "cyber intrusion or sabotage." But, he added, the "review will consider all possibilities."</p><p>The admiral <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> the McCain's collision with the tanker was the second "extremely serious incident" since the Fitzgerald's collision with a Philippine cargo ship off the coast of Japan in mid-June. The nature of the incidents and the narrow window in which they occurred "gives great cause for concern that there is something out there that we're not getting at," Richardson <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain seen after a collision with a tanker, August 21, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Experts <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">have downplayed</a> the likelihood of such attacks on US warships, noting that infiltrating Navy guidance systems would be very hard to do and instead citing human negligence or error as likely causes. Others have <a href="https://twitter.com/MalwareJake/status/900747428785246212" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">dismissed</a> the likelihood of state-directed attacks on ships at sea, noting that such efforts would be a misuse of resources, strategically unwise, and generally harmful to maritime conduct.</p><p>But recent high-profile cyberattacks around the world have brought new attention to the security of maritime navigation, which is highly reliant on computer networks.</p><p>The US Navy uses encrypted navigation systems that would be <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">difficult</a> to hack or deceive, and there's no sign satellite communications were at fault in the McCain's collision. But there is technology out there to misdirect GPS navigation - typically through a process known as "<a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article168470432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">spoofing</a>" that leaves the system thinking it is somewhere it's not.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Kristina Young/Released</span></p><p class="caption">A sailor stands watch as conning officer on the bridge of amphibious-assault ship USS America (LHA 6), July 12, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The software and electronic gear needed to spoof a GPS system has become easier to get in recent years, particularly for private or nonstate actors.</p><p>In 2013, a team of graduate students led by Todd Humphreys, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and satellite-navigation expert, were <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">able to spoof</a> the GPS on an $80 million yacht, directing it hundreds of yards off course without the system detecting the change.</p><p>In late June, GPS signals for about 20 ships in the eastern Black Sea <a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article168470432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">were manipulated</a>, with navigation equipment on the ships, though seeming to be functioning correctly, saying the ships were located 20 miles inland. An attack on thousands of computers later that month also disrupted shipping around the world.</p><p>Global commercial shipping is more vulnerable such attacks and cargo ships are more exposed - the number of them plying the high seas has <a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article168470432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">quadrupled</a> over the past 25 years. And causing a collision by hacking or hijacking a commercial vessel's GPS is seen as increasingly possible.</p><p>Most commercial and passenger ships use the Automatic Identification System, or AIS, to locate other ships and avoid collisions. But the <a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article168470432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AIS has weaknesses</a>, and hackers could in theory send out a signal claiming to be a phantom ship, affecting navigation decisions by other ships in the area.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Cargo ships navigate the Panama Canal on the outskirts of Colon City, Panama, May 11, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Dana Goward, former chief of Marine Transportation Systems for the US Coast Guard, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/08/23/could-hackers-behind-u-s-navy-collisions/594107001" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> hackers could go after the unsecured navigation system on a commercial or private ship while simultaneously jamming a Navy ship's guidance systems. Or they could misdirect the commercial ship's guidance system, sending the ship off-course.</p><p>In the aftermath of the McCain and Fitzgerald collisions, the demands facing the US Navy, and the Pacific fleet in particular, have gotten renewed focus. Greater operational demands on fewer ships have cut into time for rest as well as time dedicated to training (and <a href="http://nationalinterest.org/feature/what-the-navy-doesnt-want-you-know-about-its-deadly-ship-22025?page=show" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the nature</a> of that training has changed as well).</p><p>In light of such demands, experience suggests that in high-traffic areas mistakes by humans manning the ships remained a likely culprit, said Goward, a former Coast Guard captain.
