"I grew up watching 'Old School' and 'Road Trip.' I'm a big fan."So he headed over, introduced himself, told Phillips that he was an actor, and struck up a conversation. After a cordial chat, which included Phillips recommending a good wine to the actor, Martello left the store.But he wasn't done. The ambitious 27-year-old, sensing a major career moment at hand, went back to his car, grabbed one of his headshots, and waited patiently for Phillips to come out of the store."'What's going on here?'" Martello recalled Phillips asking as the director noticed him clutching his headshot."I was like, 'Hey man, here's my headshot, you can rip it up if you want, but I would be honored to work with you,'" Martello told the director.Martello, whose previous credits include the short films "INFINITY!" and "Something I Wanted More Of," and being a stand-in for Nick Jonas on "Jumanji: The Next Level," assumed he would never hear from Phillips again.Then, a few weeks later, he got a call from Phillips' assistant: the director wanted him to read for a small role in his next movie, "Joker: Folie à Deux."<div type="image" title="Theodore Martello in hair and makeup" height="884" width="1179" msid="114055583" hostid="261" sizebytes="34968"></div>Shooting the scene for the much-anticipated sequel, in which Joaquin Phoenix plays the iconic DC Comics villain, needed to be done in less than a month. Weeks later, he was on set in downtown Los Angeles, which doubled as a New York City street for his scene.Once he got there he learned he'd be doing his scene with Lady Gaga, who stars in the movie as Joker's love interest Lee. Martello would be playing a late-1970s Wall Street guy, sporting a suit with slicked back hair. In the scene, he's standing by a storefront of TV sets next to Gaga. They watch Phoenix as Joker on the TV screens until Gaga's Lee character suddenly throws a trash can into the display window. Martello's character is in shock as Lee moves away the broken glass, grabs a TV set, and casually walks away.The scene was filmed over two days (Martello even got a trailer). Day one was wardrobe fitting, and the second day was shooting alongside Gaga. He even got to engage in a little small talk with the 13-time Grammy winner."Me and the other Wall Street guy in the scene, we were bartenders at the time we shot the scene. Gaga mentioned to us there was a time when she only dated bartenders," he said. "So we were joking around. He was making me comfortable," Martello said. "There were a few people who were like, 'So, you're the lucky one.'"Gaga, now in her wardrobe for the scene, spent a couple of hours rehearsing with the stunt coordinator, making sure she knew where to throw the trash can so the window would shatter just right.Meanwhile, Martello said Phillips was preparing to direct the shot from an unusual location."He likes to see what the camera is seeing, so he was covered in trash bags," Martell said, referring to the row of trash bags that are on the edge of the sidewalk in the scene. "He was lying in the bottom, hidden. Now, with "Joker: Folie à Deux" on his resume, he said he's begun landing better auditions."Showing your face and getting out there is key," he said when asked what advice he'd give to aspiring actors. "You can't get cast just being in your room and sending out self-tapes. You get cast by going to meet and greets and industry nights and acting classes. You just have to get out there."And maybe always have your headshot handy in your car. You never know.

If you're like me, you may be wondering why it feels like time is going faster <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/parents-getting-older-how-talk-aging-senior-care-2023-8">as you get older</a>. Neuroscientists explained to Insider the science behind time perception and what we could do to slow things down and keep our brains active and engaged. <h2>Childhood experiences seemed to last longer</h2>Thinking back on your childhood, you might recall getting your ears pierced, trying a sip of beer, riding a roller coaster, or going on your first airplane trip without your parents. Even if you can't remember precise dates or details, these formative years are full of novel experiences. Brain plasticity is the organ's ability to adapt as needed. "The brain's high plasticity during childhood means it's rapidly forming new neural connections and storing detailed memories," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dccc.edu/about/faculty-staff/meet-our-faculty/hayley-nelson">Hayley Nelson, who holds a Ph.D.</a> in psychological and brain sciences and is a psychology professor and the founder of <a target="_blank" href="https://academyofneuro.com/">the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience</a>, told Insider. "In these rapid-learning periods, the brain encodes more information, making time feel elongated." Another reason that childhood experiences feel longer is the relative nature of time. As you get older, "each successive year represents a significantly smaller percentage of your lifetime," <a target="_blank" href="https://psych.ubc.ca/profile/todd-handy/">Todd Handy, who holds a Ph.D.</a> in psychology and is a cognitive neuroscientist and professor of psychology at the <keyword id="20564333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-british-columbia" source="keywords">University of British Columbia</keyword>, told Insider. "When you're 5, a year is a fifth of your life, and when you're 60, a year is a 60th of your life." At 13, I felt like two months dragged out because I was waiting to reunite with my friends. Strong emotions such as anxiety, fear, and dread can make time feel longer, <keyword id="20300936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nelson" source="keywords">Nelson</keyword> said. Just think of how slow time feels when it's the last hour of your workday before a long weekend or when you're sitting in the dentist's chair waiting for the numbing cream to take effect. Time can feel slow in moments when we want it to go faster. <h2>You experience time differently from how you remember it</h2>Deep inside the brain is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/brain/sls-20077047?s=5">structure called the hippocampus</a>, which is responsible for learning and storing memories. When you experience something significant, like failing your driver's test or traveling with your partner for the first time, there tends to be greater activity in the hippocampus, leading to richer memories. "Later, when you recall these memories, they appear longer and more detailed," Nelson said. "So although an event might feel short while it's occurring, it could feel longer when you remember it." In addition to how you perceive time, it's worth considering where you're "mentally spending your time," <keyword id="23547288" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handy" source="keywords">Handy</keyword> said. You can spend it focused on the here and now, as in the concept of mindfulness. Or you might be engaged in mind wandering, where you're thinking about the past or anticipating what's going to happen. "It's very natural for our brains to be able to anticipate the future and recall the past, and it's not a bad thing to mind wander," Handy said. Though if you're feeling detached or distracted when you should be enjoying yourself, trying to be more present can benefit your mental health. <h2>Why it feels like time goes by faster with age</h2>While time may feel relative in some ways, it's a finite resource. We have only a certain amount of time, and this becomes increasingly apparent as we age. "When you're younger, it's really easy to not think about time because you have so much more of your life left to live," Handy said. "As we get older, we realize we have less and less of it, and I think that also can lend a sense of urgency, which makes it feel like it's going faster." The aging process also leads to physiological changes in areas of the brain responsible for thinking and making decisions. These neural pathways can degrade and affect brain activity in older adults, which might change our perception of time, Nelson said. "Additionally, adults often have more routines and fewer new experiences, making time feel like it's flying by," she added. Because social media gives us ready access to memories through photos and anniversaries, we also tend to experience <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-90s-halloween-movies-to-stream-this-year-2023-9">nostalgia</a>. "If we're fortunate, we have a lot of good memories to draw on from the past," Handy said. "At the same time, those can feel deeply bittersweet, especially with respect to kids growing up, losing parents, and missed opportunities." <h2>You can learn to 'slow' down and remember more</h2>There's no magic elixir for slowing down time. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your brain active and improve memory retention. You can start by getting enough sleep, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ways-exercise-can-help-live-longer-longevity-2023-9">being physically active</a>, and eating a nutritious diet. Practicing mindfulness can also help increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings. "Activities like puzzles can boost brain functions related to decision-making and problem-solving, helping preserve a consistent perception of time," Nelson said. When you're learning or experiencing something new, your brain is prompted to create brain cells and connections, which can improve memory retention. Of the countless memories we form throughout life, "we're more inclined to remember novel experiences," Handy said. And because we have better recall for things such as traveling abroad or trying a new cuisine, we may feel like we've done more after having these experiences. On the other hand, there's value in not putting pressure on yourself to make new memories, especially if your life doesn't match up with your friends' and peers'. "The more accepting we are of our experiences in terms of time passing, the better off we're going to be," Handy added.

At least two were hospitalized. </li></ul>Police have arrested a 38-year-old man they say poisoned eight homeless people in Huntington Beach, California, with a substance twice as strong as pepper spray.Some of the victims were told they were participating in a "spicy food challenge" before they were given a food laced with oleoresin capsicum, according to the <a href="http://orangecountyda.org/civica/press/display.asp?layout=12&amp;Entry=60106010">Orange County District Attorney's office</a>. As the victims suffered, they were videotaped, the office said.Some experienced symptoms included a seizure-like response, difficulty breathing, vomiting, and intense mouth and stomach pain, prosecutors alleged. But as DTC brands grow and scale their businesses, they are now taking a page out of the traditional brands' playbook.Many are not only embracing traditional advertising more than ever before, but are also hiring key executives with traditional backgrounds to chart their next phases of growth. DTC brands' ad spend has increased by 37% on average over the last two years, and a growing chunk of their ad dollars are being directed toward traditional advertising such as TV and print, according to estimates from advertising intelligence company MediaRadar.Specifically, TV ad spend was five times higher in 2018 than in 2015 across 1,136 DTC brands that the company tracked, with the number of brands running ads on national TV nearly doubling in the past two years. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">MediaRadar</div></div></div>Peleton, SmileDirectClub, and Leesa Sleep were among the top spenders at $185 million, $243 million, and $132 million each in 2018 overall, with a whopping $183 million, $210 million, and $130 million respectively dedicated to TV. DTC brands spent 2 billion on TV in 2018, according to the <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/direct-to-consumer-brands-block-to-tv-in-search-of-scale">Video Advertising Bureau</a>.On the print side, Untuckit, Minted, and Saatva were the leading spenders. "What's surprising is how standard marketing starts to look for these DTC brands once they truly start to scale," said Todd Krizelman, CEO and cofounder of MediaRadar. "When they scale, they start expanding into more typical marketing investments."<h2>TV helps DTC brands stand out from the clutter</h2>DTC brands are highly performance-driven, and typically begin their advertising journeys with targeted spends in online channels like Google, Facebook, and Instagram. But once they reach a certain scale and maturity, these channels begin to get saturated. TV then becomes the obvious next step to create more broad, top-of-funnel awareness, said Sam Applbaum, general manager at the agency YellowHammer."Auction-based buying on these platforms has diluted value proposition because there is increased competition for the same type of audience, and so there is more clutter and higher CPMs," he said. "So instead of prioritizing low cost of acquiring customers, they begin to focus on harnessing the lifetime value of a customer instead."After years of prioritizing digital advertising, for example, ice-cream brand Halo Top launched its first TV campaign last month. "With digital, we have milliseconds to make an impression, whereas traditional will allow us to really capitalize on the impact of storytelling with sight, sound, and motion."TV also adds credibility to these digitally native brands, pointed out Emily Heyward, cofounder and chief strategist at the agency Red Antler, which has worked with DTC brands including Casper, Allbirds, and Birchbox. That's particularly true with influencer fraud running rampant on many of these platforms. "It lends an air of legitimacy," she said. "There are still a lot of people who are wary of things being sold to them online."And it yields results.Healthcare startup Thirty Madison has invested heavily in TV for its hair loss brand Keeps since the brand was launched in January 2018. While that may have been a gamble at first, it has worked from a performance perspective. Keep's cost of acquiring consumers via TV is on par with its digital channels, according to Thirty Madison cofounder Steven Gutentag, who said that the brand has increased its TV spend by 10 times.<h2>DTC brands are also hiring executives with more traditional backgrounds</h2>DTC companies are also increasingly tapping executives with traditional backgrounds to lead them forward as they try to build viable brands.On average, chief marketing officers (CMOs) leading DTC companies come armed with 16 years of prior work experience, according to MediaRadar, with three-fourths of them (75%) cutting their teeth at larger "household name" corporations before their current roles. Further, more than half (50%) of them had a visible quantitative bent with degrees in Economics, Finance, or MBAs.Brita Fielding, the CMO of Leesa Sleep, for example, has an undergraduate degree in finance as well as an MBA. She had 14 years of prior work experience, including roles at Amazon, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, and Godiva, where she led digital ecommerce. Similarly, Lori Krauss, Warby Parker's CMO, has 22 years of work experience behind her, including roles at Armani, Vera Wang, and Nike.This is not surprising, said Red Antler's Heyward, as the DTC model hasn't been around for long enough to have produced true subject-area experts. During the program, the Oracle of Omaha recommended that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/buffett-we-are-buying-stocks-now-2013-3">average investor buy an index fund</a> and lock it away for a few years.
The think behind this is that most active investors, or those who try to beat the market, usually end up underperforming the market.
<keyword id="1738334" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Art-Cashin">Art Cashin</keyword>, UBS Financial Services' Director of Floor Operations, thinks Buffett is sending a mixed message by making this type of recommendation.
You see, Buffett employs at least two people — <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/warren-buffetts-2012-annual-shareholder-letter-2013-3">Todd Combs and Ted Weschler</a> — who actively manage tons of money for Berkshire Hathaway.
And while Buffett reports that they outperformed the markets last year, surely he can't expect them to outperform forever. Right?

Do As I Say…. – Becky Quick had another top of the game interview with Warren Buffett on Squawkbox yesterday. While it normally doesn't require water-boarding to get the Oracle of Omaha to talk, Becky, as a consummate professional, consistently and charmingly draws out follow-up on key topics, helping the viewer better understand the points being made. It was a terrific, information-filled three hours.
It was not fully consistent, however. At one point Warren suggested that the public might be well-served to buy an ETF index fund product, put it in a drawer and pretend the market was closed for the next five years or so. The theory being that the inevitable improvement in the U.S. economy would lift stocks and, thus, the value of your ETF.
In the same interview, Mr. Buffett allowed as how he was going to give two in-house money managers about 25% more money to manage (about a billion dollars or so). The reason being that they had outperformed the S&amp;P by a very handy margin.
The man on the street should invest by buying unmanaged index funds, while America's most successful investor hands gobs of money to two active and savvy managers. As they say on Sesame Street – "one of these things is not like the other."

ART CASHIN: Warren Buffett Is Being Inconsistent

Investors, and consumers, are getting restless. They want a new category-defining product from the company that reinvented the MP3 player with the iPod, the mobile phone with the iPhone, and the personal computer with the iPad. 
So, what's it going to be?
All signs point to Apple tackling the watch for its next major piece of brand new hardware.
Sure, there is talk of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-has-a-new-set-top-box-coming-bloomberg-2014-2">Apple revamping its Apple TV box</a>. But, frankly, the Apple TV revamp sounds a little boring. As of right now, it sounds like Apple is going to route cable through the Apple TV, and add a nicer interface to what we already get. 
The Apple watch, which everyone calls the "iWatch," sound truly unique and exciting. 
A lot of companies have experimented with "wearable" computers. Google has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-jarvis-on-google-glass-2014-2">tried Google Glass</a>. Nike <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/review-the-nike-fuelband-versus-the-fitbit-force-2013-11">has the FuelBand</a>. Samsung <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/galaxy-gear-review-2013-10">released the Galaxy Gear</a>. And Pebble has a line of smartwatches. 
All of those products hint that there's something there with wearable computing, but none of them really stand out as potential mainstream hits.

Now, it's time for Apple to step in and cherry pick the best features from all these products and deliver something that consumers really want, just like it did with the iPad.
There is quite a bit of pressure on CEO Tim Cook to deliver with the iWatch. Since Steve Jobs died people have quietly, and not-so-quietly, questioned Cook's abilities as a visionary tech leader. The iWatch will be one of his first opportunities to show the world what the post-Jobs Apple will deliver. 
So, who is running this important project for Cook?

Below them, Apple has hired a bunch of outsiders for the project. The reason for bringing in outsiders is that the iWatch seems to be an entirely new realm of exploration for Apple.

Why are some people able to perform at peaklevel for weeks in a row? What is the difference to be able to perform and willing to perform. What is the role of sleep, motivation, physiology. How can we optimize sleep?"</li>
<li>Ueyn Block, who came from C8 MediSensors. It seems like C8 Medisensors shut down. It was developing a continuous, non-invasive glucose measuring system. C8 was working on a product that you wore and it gave a read out every 8-10 minutes. Block was an engineer at the company.</li>
<li>Todd Whitehurst, hardware director at Senseonics. Senseonics is also working on a wearable glucose monitoring system. It works with a smartphone to provide data for a user.</li>
<li>Dr. Michael O'Reilly, formerly Chief Medical Officer at a company called Masimo. Masimo developed hardware that worked with the iPhone to measure your pulse. The company <a href="http://www.masimo.com/aboutmasimo/index.htm">says of itself</a>, "[Masimo] develops and manufactures innovative noninvasive patient monitoring technologies, including medical devices and a wide array of sensors."</li>

Gurman says of Dougherty, her past work "included a health metric-reading wearable patch and ingestible, Bluetooth-connected smart pills for monitoring dosages and scheduling." At Sano, Gurman says she was developing a wearable sensor system.</li>
<li>Ravi Narasimhan, formerly in R&amp;D for Vital Connect. Vital Connect makes monitors you stick on your skin to track your health. Gurman says Narasimhan focused on "measuring respiration and activity levels and wearable medical devices."</li>
<li>Marcelo Lamego, formerly CTO of Ceracor. According to NetworkWorld, Lamego has 70 patents, and <a href="http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/apples-hiring-spree-biosensor-experts-continues">developed a hemoglobin monitor for Ceracor</a>. </li>

Add up all these people and what do we get?
There's an idea of a gadget that monitors your health. Clearly, glucose monitoring is something Apple is working on. It's also looking at general health monitoring, and overall fitness. There's also interest in tracking sleep. 
One thing that sticks out to us: This product doesn't sound like it will appeal to young people very much. When you're under 30, you're not all that worried about your health and fitness.
 But, who knows what else is going to be involved. Apple probably has its employees developing applications that appeal to a broad range of people.
