Biduri was summoned on October 10, 2023 to provide oral evidence and informed the Committee that he was away campaigning in Rajasthan and would not be attending. Did the politician cheat on their spouse? Eh, they all do that; politicians have been cheating on their wives since Henry II slept around on Eleanor of Aquitaine. Did the politician do a dirty trick to undermine a rival? Eh, they all do that; in fact, many of them go on to gloat about that in books written decades later. But there are lines in the sand. Did the politician take an outright bribe from an unsavory customer? <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abscam">You do not get to represent the great state of New Jersey anymore</a>. Fully 59% of respondents said that politicians have a very or somewhat negative impact, and just 14% said they had a positive one. So eh, they all do that is the lens that will define the public perception of the Trump indictments. There's considerable evidence that not all of Trump's indictments carry the same weight among voters. Especially, look to self-identified independents: not only does this group inherenelty skew a little toward the GOP, but the attitudes toward Trump among Republicans and Democrats are also, shall we say, rather fixed. <a href="https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/fourth-trump-indictment-does-little-change-public-opinion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ipsos has polled Americans</a> on their thoughts following each of the indictments Trump has faces, and the apples-to-apples comparison here is very compelling. First, we can see that Americans are really taking this seriously. A majority of political independents think that each charge against Trump — the Manhattan indictment regarding his business practices, the federal indictment over his handling of classified documents, the federal indictment over his actions on January 6, and the Fulton County indictment over the actions of Trump and his allies to attempt to affect the outcome of the vote count — is serious.In all but one case, most independents think he should be charged with a crime. <div type="image" title="ABC News/Ipsos polls of Trump's indictments" height="720" width="1280" msid="103029817" hostid="261"></div>Furthermore, in all but one case, 38% of Republicans think the indictments are serious, and about one in seven Republicans think he should be charged with a crime. Those numbers, in a political system as entrenched as ours is, are remarkable. <a href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/analysis/trump-indictment-poll-election-2020">A Morning Consult poll that surveyed similar things</a> corroborates these numbers from Ipsos. All that said, combining the data with the concept of eh, they all do that gives a pretty instructive lay of the land when it comes to the electoral peril Trump faces. <ul><li>The Manhattan indictment, though it had the biggest splash as the first indictment, will not be as big a deal to voters as the rest of the indictments, based on the polling. Additionally, the investigation into Trump paying hush money to an adult film actress before an election falls squarely under eh, they all do that. </li><li>The Fulton County indictment has independents split over whether or not Trump should be charged. In no small part, this is because RICO is hard to understand, and everyone has had to research what racketeering actually is. Setting aside the polling, politicians have always sought to play the refs and obtain the most beneficial outcome of a vote count; the question here is if Trump went too far. </li><li>The January 6 indictment is, by all appearances, the worst one for Trump. January 6 was a unique event in American history, and no president before Trump has had to legally face the consequences of a mob of their supporters sacking the United States Capitol and threatening to murder the vice president, so it can't be waved away. The polling is the worst across every demographic, and the visuals are unforgettable. It's bad. </li><li>The documents case is the most interesting one — and, in my view, the one that could derail Trump the most. Independents think it's bad, but not that bad, and it truly depends on how persuadable voters are when it comes to eh, they all do that. On one hand, they do, in fact, all do that. After the initial search, several former presidents and vice presidents coughed up classified documents they had inadvertently taken. On the other hand, Trump kept his in a chintzy bathroom and went to remarkable lengths to hide them from authorities. There's likely a reason that his primary rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/desantis-republicans-lose-2024-referendum-document-left-toilet/story?id=101785210">has only really tried to attack Trump on this indictment.</a> There's no certainty how this plays out, but the photographs are terrible for Trump, so I hold this one could be the worst at the end of the day.</li></ul><div type="image" title="Classified documents were stored in the bathroom and shower of what appears to be a guest suite at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida." height="856" width="974" msid="103029818" hostid="261"></div>

<ul><li>Candidates with criminal records contesting the <keyword id="2458524" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haryana-assembly-election">Haryana Assembly Election</keyword> has increased from 94 to 117 individuals between 2014 to 2019. </li><li>Five candidates are accused of crimes against women and another five are accused of attempted murder.</li><li>Sirsa and Rohtak (Mehem constituency) have the highest number of candidates with criminal records.</li></ul>It’s been five years since Haryana’s last Assembly Election and the number of candidates with criminal cases registered against them has only increased. In 2014, only 7% of the candidates had criminal cases declared against them. Come 2019, it has increased to 10%, according to a report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). This is an increase of 53 from 94 candidates during the last election to 117 in the upcoming election.

 Even when it comes to serious criminal cases the percentage of candidates has increased from 5% in 2014 to 6% in 2019. These are crimes, which are not bailable and can result in at least five years of jail. Specifically, five candidates are accused of crimes against women — including two candidates who were accused of rape. Another five are accused of attempted murder. Criminals and their offences Amongst the national parties contending the elections, Indian National Congress (INC) leads the pack with the 13 candidates with criminal cases. This makes up for 15% of the party’s candidates who will be eligible on the polls.

 INC is followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has 12 candidates with criminal cases registered against them. But, BSP comes in ahead of INC when looking at serious criminal cases with 9 candidates. Tayub Husain of the BSP is one such candidate accused of rape, kidnapping, criminal intimidation and rioting. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the other hand, only has three candidates with a criminal record — one with a serious criminal case registered against them. BJP’s criminal count is the lowest amongst the national political parties. Overall, 11 of the 117 candidates with criminal accusations have even convicted of the crimes registered against them. ‘Red Alert’ constituencies According to ADR’s report, 15 out of 90 constituencies where elections will take place are ‘Red Alert’ constituencies. These constituencies have at least three or more contesting candidates with criminal cases registered against them. However, in her Tuesday order, she scheduled more than a dozen additional hearings and deadlines for lawyers through July so that she could rule on "myriad and interconnected pre-trial and CIPA issues," referencing the Classified Information Procedures Act, before the trial could begin.Trump has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-indictment-read-charges-mar-a-lago-records-case-2023-6">charged with 37 counts</a>, including 31 alleged violations of the Espionage Act for "willful retention of national defense information," related to his handling of classified documents taken to his Mar-a-Lago club after leaving office. Ron DeSantis says that prosecutors upended the GOP presidential primary. He has a point. But the harsher truth is that despite all the hype, DeSantis was just bad at this.Now, the once-vaunted Trump primary foe sounds like an NFL quarterback who complains about officiating after his wide receivers dropped potential game-changing passes and he threw costly interceptions. "I would say if I could have one thing change, I wish Trump hadn't been indicted on any of this stuff," DeSantis told the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody. "I mean honestly, I think from Alvin Bragg on, I've criticized the cases, I mean someone like a Bragg would not have brought that case if it was anyone other than Donald Trump, someone like that is distorting justice, which is bad, but I also think it distorted the primary." DeSantis added that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-indictment-total-charges-counts-2023-8">Trump's legal woes</a>, "sucked out a lot of oxygen."Hindsight is, of course, twenty-twenty, but in retrospect, it's clear that DeSantis made some pretty critical errors that have nothing to do with Alvin Bragg, Jack Smith, or Fani Willis.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.natesilver.net/p/ron-desantiss-electoral-track-record">As Nate Silver previously wrote</a>, DeSantis really could just be a pretty average politician who ran one extraordinarily good race. There's also still a chance I eat my words and DeSantis pulls off a historic comeback. But he's also really not one for fairytale endings.<h2>DeSantis' problems began before he even launched.</h2>Before he even launched his campaign, The Florida governor made two critical decisions that already and will continue to be picked apart. Neither of these have anything to do with Trump's indictments.First, DeSantis made the decision to wait to formally announce his presidential campaign until after the Florida legislative session ended. At the time, it somewhat made sense. DeSantis and his Republican allies in the legislature could ram through a bevy of conservative priorities that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-session-will-give-desantis-more-victories-ahead-presidential-run-2023-3">the governor could then brag about</a> to prospective primary voters. The problem was simultaneously, in fact before DeSantis even won his resounding reelection, former President Donald Trump was hammering him. Trump and his allies <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/trump-pac-has-now-spent-more-attacking-desantis-than-backing-gop-midterm-candidates/">spent months assaulting</a> virtually every aspect of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/04/19/ron-desantis-trump-2024-election-polls/">DeSantis' record</a> with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-says-he-wont-fight-trump-over-high-schoolers-photos-2023-2">nary a response in return</a>. When DeSantis finally started to return fire, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-doubles-down-against-trump-nickname-winner-new-york-post-2023-3">his volleys didn't pack the same weight</a> compared to the haymakers the MAGA-side continued to land. National polling shows that what was once a close race in the aftermath of DeSantis' midterm rout quickly started to turn into a double-digit Trump lead.Second: DeSantis had an unfortunate pickle because he didn't hold federal office. He had raised hundreds of millions of dollars for his reelection. But legally, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.abc12.com/news/politics/ron-desantis-has-raised-more-than-100-million-for-his-reelection-bid-could-he-use/article_8a4243fe-20bb-516b-ba43-7e20530564b5.html">he couldn't just transfer the money over</a>. So instead, he outsourced most of the decisions to an allied super PAC. In theory, this could have worked. DeSantis even wooed an advisor close to Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, himself a potential 2024 hopeful, to run the outfit.No Republicans have voted yet, but we can safely label that decision to be a disaster. As The Washington Post <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/16/desantis-super-pac-collapse/">recounted in embarrassing detail</a>, DeSantis' super PAC was plagued by allegations of mismanagement. Even top officials discussed publicly<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/ron-desantis-super-pac-acknowledges-campaign-behind-donald-trump/"> how difficult it was</a> for the Florida governor to break through. The operation's early designs for an expansive and expensive ground game through Super Tuesday states later pivoted to a hail mary on the Iowa caucuses. And amid that final play, top officials continue to resign sparking more headlines about the woes in DeSantis world.These two decisions are not alone.<h2>His issues didn't improve once he finally joined the field.</h2>It wasn't Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's choice for DeSantis to spend years <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-threatens-to-build-a-state-prison-next-to-disney-world-2023-4">tormenting Disney</a> to the point that even some conservative <a target="_blank" href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3976584-the-memo-republicans-worry-desantis-has-erred-in-disney-feud/">donors grew queasy</a>. But DeSantis did. Nor did Bragg choose to formally announce the campaign in an audio chat with Elon Musk, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-reaction-to-desantis-twitter-spaces-announcement-2024-gop-primary-2023-5">a glitch-filled rollout</a> that looked like amateur hour at its finest. DeSantis did that too.Special counsel Jack Smith has no responsibility for DeSantis' actions on Capitol Hill. Despite being a former congressman, the governor had few allies in Washington. Smith also didn't tell DeSantis to blow off his own state's delegation to the point that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2023/04/19/how-trump-ambushed-desantis-in-d-c-00092761#:~:text=Just%20ask%20Steube%2C%20who%20told,his%20multiple%20attempts%20to%20connect.">no one bothered to check in on a congressman</a> who fell from his roof. Trump, on the other hand, wined and dined lawmakers at Mar-a-Lago like a college coach in desperate need of signing major recruits. Trump's efforts led to his campaign's frequent trolling of DeSantis as the former president strategically released endorsements <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-iowa-state-fair-troll-desantis-florida-lawmakers-caucuses-2023-8">timed to inflict embarrassment and pain.</a>True, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is responsible for Trump's mugshot. But she didn't encourage DeSantis to hire a media team that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ron-desantis-responsible-widely-condemned-anti-lgbtq-video-2023-8">produced videos</a> that seemed better suited to the deep fringes of the internet. She also didn't encourage the governor, or for that matter, any of the other presidential candidates, to continue to attack each other instead of Trump. As anti-Trump Republicans feared, the pre-primary debates became a repeat of 2016 where everyoneThe beauty of DeSantis' lament is that we will never know what the primary would have been like without Trump's four indictments and 91 charges. Perhaps, he's right that Republicans rallied to their fallen leader so quickly that the opportunity for any opposition was squelched before it had the chance. However, if this is true, it can't account for former UN ambassador Nikki Haley's rise. As DeSantis has fallen, Haley has shot up, especially in the key early state of New Hampshire.There's also a third option: the Nothing Matters lane. As many Republicans have pointed out, why would their voters settle for an imitation when the original was so readily available? <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/03/politics/cnn-poll-republicans-think-2020-election-illegitimate/index.html">As polling has made abundantly clear,</a> many Republicans continue to believe the 2020 election was stolen from the former president. Just like his hero Andrew Jackson, Trump wants to ride a wave of recrimination into the White House. (Jackson, though, actually kind of did have the <a target="_blank" href="https://prologue.blogs.archives.gov/2020/10/22/the-1824-presidential-election-and-the-corrupt-bargain/">election stolen from him.</a>)In this view, Republicans see a way to right their perceived wrong. Handing the keys to DeSantis or for that matter anyone else wouldn't satiate this lust for revenge. Only Trump can fulfill that.
