<p><span class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><span><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span></span>It was a rough year for Samsung, but 2015 isn't shaping up to be much better.</p>
<p>After watching profits tumble this year due to increased competition from other Android phone makers, Samsung sits at an odd inflection point. It can pump out pricey, generic Android phones and watch cheaper phone manufacturers continue to eat its lunch, or it can start innovating in software and services and find new ways to differentiate its devices from the competition.</p>
<p>Samsung had one plan to do the latter, but it seems to be faltering.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-tizen-tv-no-substitute-for-samsungs-long-awaited-answer-to-android-2014-12">Reuters had a big story last week on Tizen</a>, a mobile operating system made by Samsung that was supposed to ship on at least one phone this year. But Tizen has hit a bunch of snags, and Samsung wasn't able to release the OS on a phone before the end of 2014. (There are rumblings a Tizen phone will launch in India soon, but nothing has been confirmed yet.)</p>
<p>Samsung's Tizen project is a way for the company to wean itself off Android, which is controlled by Google. Manufacturers may be able to use Android for free, but it comes with stipulations, including using Google's suite of services like Gmail, Google Maps, and the Google Play app store.</p>
<p>That means there isn't much difference between a Samsung phone or one made by a company like the Chinese startup Xiaomi, which makes phones just as powerful as a Samsung's but sells them for about half the price. Its companies like Xiaomi that are causing customers to buy cheaper phones instead of pricey Samsung phones, which has been devastating to Samsung's profits this year. (Xiaomi is now the third-largest smartphone vendor in the world by some estimates and rapidly gaining ground on Samsung an Apple.)</p>
<p>Samsung's big challenge next year will be to prove that its Galaxy phones, which are wildly profitable, can offer more than the cheaper Android devices out there. Tizen was one potential answer to that problem.</p>
<p>But Tizen is very similar to Android. I tested an early version of Tizen at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona earlier this year. Here it is running on a sample Samsung phone:</p>

<p>It looks and function almost exactly like an Android phone. But unlike Android phones, it doesn't have the robust ecosystem of apps and services Google can provide. That makes it tough to convince people to buy one over an Android phone. It's the same thing that killed BlackBerry and has caused Windows Phone sales to remain flat. People won't buy phones that don't have access to good apps or services.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Samsung has tried to create services for its Android phones, but none of them have really taken off. There's Milk Music, which is sort of like Pandora, but not as good. There's also Milk Video, a streaming video service with a very limited selection. And ChatOn, Samsung's answer to iMessage, WhatsApp, and other popular messaging apps, is shutting down soon.</p>
<p>Still, the Tizen project is far from dead, and we'll probably see it ship on a few low-end devices in emerging markets next year. Tizen also powers most of Samsung's smartwatches. And even though Samsung has yet to make a smartwatch that can sell in significant quantities, I've heard we can expect to see more models in 2015 as the company continues to experiment. Finally, Tizen can control "smart home" appliances like light switches and washing machines. That "internet of things" trend is one of Samsung's big bets on the future.</p>
<p>But here's the reality for Samsung in the near term:</p>
<p>Profits tanked 60% last quarter for Samsung. This quarter might be a little better because of holiday sales, but I bet the launch of the big-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus won't help things. (Analysts are expecting a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-sales-are-going-nuclear-2014-12">record quarter for iPhone sales</a>.) And while Samsung enjoyed about three years of massive growth, the smaller Android manufacturers have caught up and figured out how to undercut Samsung on price.</p>
<p>The iPhone is still doing well because it's a unique experience in everything from hardware design to apps and services. Samsung phones still look like any other plasticky Android device out there and don't have any key differentiating software features. An Android phone is and Android phone. It really doesn't matter who makes it these days.</p>
<p>Tizen was one potential savior for Samsung, but now even that is flailing.</p>

Samsung's Plan To Replace Android Has Hit A Snag, And Now Things Are Looking Bad For Next Year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div>When it comes to Android devices, it's common for various phone makers to put their own software over Google's clean version of Android.</p>
<p>If you swipe through one of Samsung's Galaxy phones, for example, your likely to come across some of Samsung's apps and its own Galaxy app store.</p>
<p>Now, however, it seem that Google wants its partners to put its own apps and services at the forefront of most Android phones.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.theinformation.com/Google-s-Confidential-Android-Contracts-Show-Rising-Requirements?token=927e08e77fb1e1a1e587100b837ce99d">Amir Efrati at The Information</a> says he has obtained confidential documents the reveal Google has been upping its requirements for partners that want to build Android phones.</p>
<p>In particular, the documents suggest Google wants its partners to place more of its apps on Android phones and feature them in more prominent places.</p>
<p>One reason for this change is that Google wants the Android experience to be more consistent across devices, Efrati reports. This means Google would turn down certain customizations proposed by phone makers, and Efrati notes that "there have been frequent fights about that, particularly between Google and Samsung."</p>
<p>This wouldn't be too surprising - Samsung is known for adding its own TouchWiz software to its Android devices. The company also emphasizes its own software features and apps when promoting its new phones.</p>
<p>While Samsung is one of Google's biggest partners, its also its most formidable rival when it comes to the smartphone space. Samsung's incredibly popular Galaxy phones compete directly with Google's Nexus devices and other smartphones, such as Motorola's, that use near-stock versions of Android. </p>

<p>But many of these manufacturers feel as if they don't have a choice since other operating systems such as Windows Phone, Tizen, and Firefox OS have limited reach. Android currently commands an overwhelming <a href="http://thenextweb.com/google/2014/07/31/android-reached-record-85-smartphone-market-share-q2-2014-report/">85% of the global smartphone market</a> as of July 2014, according to Strategy Analytics.</p>
<p>As part of the updated contract, Google is requiring one of its partners to increase the number of Google-made apps from nine in 2011 to 20 in 2014.  This year's agreement also required that there must be a Google search widget on the default home screen of the phone along with an icon for the Google Play store and a Google icon that houses 13 apps included "Google Chrome, Google Maps, Google Drive, YouTube, and Gmail among others.</p>
<p>Google is also reportedly requiring partners to follow its guidelines regarding hotwords for voice-enabled searches and virtual assistants. </p>
<p>It's unclear exactly what the impact of these new contracts will be, but if Efrati's report is legitimate this may mean we'll be seeing less customization from some of Google's partners. Samsung has already been putting more of its resources into Tizen, a different open-source software based on Linux.</p>
<p>The company's new Gear S smartwatch, for example, runs on Tizen, but we have yet to see a mainstream phone from Samsung that runs on something other than Android.</p>

Confidential Documents Reveal How Google Is Trying To Limit Samsung's Control Of Android

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In 2013, Samsung Electronics had a whopping 275,000 total employees, or more than five times the size of Google's, <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/09/samsung-has-more-employees-than-google-apple-and-microsoft-combined/">Ars Technica reported Friday.</a> </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That's more than Google, Apple, and Microsoft combined.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Even when you narrow it down to just software engineers, Samsung still had an overwhelming 40,506 people making software. To put that in context, Google only had 18,593 in R&amp;D (most of which were probably making software). </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ars Technica writes that even with double the size of engineering headcount, Samsung still hasn't been able to create anything of impact in the software world, while "everyone can name notable pieces of Google software." A</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">t least on the hardware side, it said, Samsung has been cranking it out: It's released 46 smartphones and 27 tablets in 2014 alone.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The report notes, however, there's a reason for Samsung's shortfall compared to Google or Apple. Samsung has a lot of work across its massive consumer electronics product line, like TVs and cameras, as well as its own Tizen OS - all requiring some sort of software writing - which partly explains why it spends so much on software engineers. In fact, Samsung Electronics produces semiconductors, display panels, and home appliances, too, unlike Google or Apple, which have a much more narrower line of business.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"The hunt to offer every product in every category has created a sprawling company, while Apple and Google seem to want to pick and choose their hardware battles with a more focused lineup," the report said.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The truth may sound dull, but it matters as much as any fancy new gadget.</span></p>
<p>What Apple's boss, Tim Cook, presented on June 2nd, at the company's annual conference for software developers in San Francisco, were upgraded operating systems, one for its Mac desktops and laptops and another for its mobile devices, plus a new programming language.</p>
<p>These, combined with other moves to nurture the Apple "ecosystem", should make its offerings even more attractive to both developers and consumers--and even more formidable to its rivals.</p>
<p>Apple's pitch is greater convenience, in at least three ways. First, the operating systems, OS X Yosemite for Macs and iOS 8 for mobiles, will do more than improve on the current versions when they are released in the autumn. In comparison, he gloated, only 14% of Windows personal computers were on Windows 8. And a mere 9% of mobile devices with Google's Android operating system had the latest variant.</p>
<p>Apple's second move towards greater convenience is to loosen some of its tight restrictions on developers. They will be allowed to bundle apps for sale at a discount in Apple's store, to show video previews and to invite users to test beta versions.</p>
<p>Apple will also allow third-party apps--for example, ones that apply fancy effects to photos--to be embedded in its own apps.</p>
<p>The new programming language, Swift, will make it easier to write apps. Thanks to all this, programmers should be even keener to write them for iOS 8 first, before they turn to Android's many versions or to Windows (if at all). A fuller app store is in turn a bigger draw for consumers.</p>
<p>The third convenience-boosting move is to simplify the growing mishmash of applications in two fields: health and the home. Apple plans to bring a lot of third-party health apps under a common platform, HealthKit, so that a blood-pressure reading from one app, say, might trigger an alert from another that prompts a call from the doctor.</p>
<p>Likewise, HomeKit will bring together diverse apps for stuff around the house: at bedtime, a verbal instruction to an iPhone may lock the doors and dim the lights (but not yet put the cat out).</p>
<p>Apple hopes that the sheer ease of having several interconnected apps in one place will bind people to its ecosystem of devices and software. People will still be able to switch to other devices, and take their data with them, but the fiddliness of changing over may keep them loyal.</p>
<p>What may be more likely to put them off is who might get to see all their assiduously compiled data, especially about their health, a concern Apple sought to allay this week.</p>
<p>Although Microsoft's new boss, Satya Nadella, is bursting with bright ideas about a "mobile first, cloud first" world, the firm has a lot of catching up to do. As for makers of Android devices, they lack Apple's control over the operating system and the app store.</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The truth may sound dull, but it matters as much as any fancy new gadget.</span></p>
<p>What Apple's boss, Tim Cook, presented on June 2nd, at the company's annual conference for software developers in San Francisco, were upgraded operating systems, one for its Mac desktops and laptops and another for its mobile devices, plus a new programming language.</p>
<p>These, combined with other moves to nurture the Apple "ecosystem", should make its offerings even more attractive to both developers and consumers--and even more formidable to its rivals.</p>

"Open source" is a special category of software that is free for anyone to use and/or develop, regardless of copyright.</p><p>Ubuntu is based on Linux, the same underlying code that powers data centres and household-name operating systems like Android. So the chances are you <em>have</em> actually used something powered by Ubuntu at some point in your life already, albeit indirectly.</p><p>However, Ubuntu is not going to sit in the backroom forever. The company that makes it, Canonical, has been working on <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/phone" title="Ubuntu Phone">a mobile version of Ubuntu</a> capable of taking on Google's Android system. That work that has born fruit this year with the arrival of <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/phone/devices" title="The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition">the firm's flagship Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition smartphone</a>.</p><p>Now, I'm sure most of you reading this article are asking "why should I care about Ubuntu phone?"</p><h3>The Holy Grail of technology</h3><p>I'll tell you why. Canonical is actually one of the most advanced and forward-looking companies when it comes to creating the Holy Grail of technologies, a "ubiquitous operating system."</p><p>What does this mean?</p><p><span>A ubiquitous operating system is</span> a platform where all devices, regardless of whether they're a phone, tablet, smartwatch, smart thermostat or even smart traffic light, run using the same back-end technology and are able to talk to each other. You'll hear tech folks refer to this idea when they talk about the Internet of Things (IoT) or machine learning.</p><p>If realised, this dream would make it so that things like our smartphones could not only detect but also predict and serve our needs without us having to lift a finger.</p><p>The Ubuntu phone is a massive part of Canonical's plan to make this happen. It aims to completely rethink the way we interact with our smartphones and our smartphones interact with us.</p><p>After a solid month using it, let me tell you, while there are some growing pains, Ubuntu's phone offering is a startling piece of technology that left me wishing our machine carers - and potential overlords - would arrive sooner.</p><p>The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition is currently only being sold in Europe as a promotional competition model. The competition requires people interested in buying the phone, which carries a €300 price tag, to visit <a href="http://www.meizu.com/en/ubuntu/game.html" title="Ubuntu competition page">a special page on Meizu's website</a> and win an "invite to purchase."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Business Insider" title_caption="As phones go the Meizu MX4 is pretty good for a mid-range handset." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55ae506edd0895cd148b45f0-960/meizu mx4 ubuntu edition side.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">As phones go the Meizu MX4 is pretty good for a mid-range handset.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>Canonical's opening blast at Android</h3><p>I've heard both Apple and Google claim their operating system has reinvented the wheel when talking about their yearly iOS or Android update over the years.</p><p>But each time what they've actually done is fairly minor and adds up to moving a widget, or adjusting the placement of a sub menu, while keeping the same core window-based, click-on-app/open-app user-interface.</p><p>This isn't the case with Ubuntu.</p><p>When I first picked it up, the Ubuntu phone felt like the most unique and alien mobile operating system I'd ever experienced (and this is coming from someone who's sampled everything from BlackBerry 10 to Mozilla's FireFox OS and Samsung's Tizen).</p><p>For starters, the Ubuntu OS has a completely reworked user interface that replaces the traditional home screen with a new system of "scopes".</p><p>The scope system does away with the traditional mobile interface where applications are stored and accessed from a central series of homescreens.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Business Insider" title_caption="This is what the Nearby scope looks like." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55ae506edd0895cd148b45f1-960/meizu mx4 ubuntu edition scope.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">This is what the Nearby scope looks like.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It replaces that with a "tailored series of individual home screens" that intelligently collect and push information from a variety of apps in a similar way to Google's Now service. (Google Now is a service on Android that pushes information it thinks will be of interest to its user.)</p><p>The scopes organise the data in custom home screens for specific situations or themes.</p><p>For example, if you go to the "Nearby" scope, the phone will pull information from apps like Maps, Yelp, Timeout and Facebook to pull in items of interest, like local public transport links and restaurants into its UI.</p><p>If you go to "music" it will pull up the songs you regularly listen to, while recommending similar artists you may want to check out.</p><p>This in theory lets you access information from all the applications installed on the phone without having to open them individually. We found nearly all the key features and menus on the Meizu MX4 are accessed using gesture controls, not with screen shortcuts.</p><p>For example, a short scroll from the left brings out the Ubuntu Unity Application launcher - which is a customizable shortcut menu to specific core-applications, like the phone dialler, maps, messaging and the photo library.</p><p>A short scroll from the right brings out the last open application, while a longer scroll right brings up a new window showing all the open applications on the phone.</p><p>Unless you're one of the few people currently using BlackBerry 10, the gesture-focused controls and scopes system will feel very weird, even if you are fairly technical.</p><p>For the first two weeks I was slightly out of sorts using Ubuntu phone and would regularly find myself by default trying to go to dedicated apps, rather than scopes.</p><p>However midway through my second week I had an odd moment where everything clicked and I began adjusting to Ubuntu's way of doing things.</p><p>The moment occurred one evening when I managed to turn up to meeting in an area of London I wasn't too familiar with. Here, with a couple of hours to kill, I found myself by default checking the Nearby scope rather than reaching for the specific Yelp or Here Maps apps.</p><p>In the scope I got a useful weather update alerting me to incoming rain and a series of recommendations for decent coffee shops and local landmarks - which included a pretty awesome comic shop - I could visit.  </p><p>The experience is a great example of why, when it works, the Ubuntu user interface is so good. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nexus-6-review-photos-price-2014-11" title="Review: I just spent a week with the biggest phone in the world, the Google Nexus 6">I actually found myself having mixed feelings about going back to my Google Nexus 6</a> Android. The Nexus has better performance and hardware, but it felt slightly clunky to use after two-plus weeks with the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition.</p><p>Despite being a young operating system I was also impressed with the number of applications Canonical has managed to get into its Ubuntu store. For music, Ubuntu offers Soundcloud, 7digital and Soundkick. It also features support for all the regular mobile providers, including Google, Apple, Yahoo, Mozilla and Microsoft.</p><p>Ubuntu also gone to lengths to make sure its OS works with all the main software providers, and this has paid off. Jumping onto an unknown platform wasn't as scary as it could have been.</p><h3>Flies in the ointment</h3><p>All this makes it sound like Ubuntu is great, and for the most part it is. However, during my four weeks with the device I noticed a few serious bugs that damage its overall consumer appeal.</p><p>For starters there's general performance. While the handset was generally fine, there were instances when it would noticeably chug. On occasion, even when doing basic things like switching between scopes and applications, the Meizu MX4 would freeze mid-animation.</p><p>While this isn't too serious, and being fair I never once had an application unexpectedly crash or quit on me, it did become an ongoing annoyance - especially when playing games or watching video content.</p><p>Then there was the larger battery issue. On paper, the Meizu MX4's 3,100 Milliamp Hour (mAh) battery should offer a fairly decent life. (mAh is a metric designed to gauge a battery's strength and size. The bigger the number the more charge a battery can theoretically hold. As battery sizes go 3,100mAh is pretty big for a phone the Meizu MX4's size. Moderate use entailed listening to music on the way to and from work, taking and making a few calls, checking maps a couple of times, sporadically browsing the web and regularly checking social media and email.</p><p>I think this is something to do with the way the Ubuntu OS handles multitasking, as not only did the phone heat up to an uncomfortable level when running multiple apps, it also outright leaked its charge and would continue to rapidly lose power, even when in sleep mode.</p><p>Finally, there's my biggest criticism - Ubuntu phone's is not smart enough yet. While the app selection is impressive for a prototype, in its infancy Ubuntu phone doesn't have enough data feeding into it, as key services are missing.</p><p>For example big-name shopping and grocery services, like Amazon or Ocado, or commonly used apps, such as Spotify aren't officially supported - though their web apps do work. This is annoying as it keeps key bits of data that could further improve Ubuntu's ability to intelligently predict my needs from appearing on the relevant scopes. For a general, non-techie person used to iOS or Android my answer, for now, would be, probably not.</p><p>At least not yet.</p><p>While the OS oozes tech appeal and gets so much right at the backend, bugs in its software jar the user experience just enough to annoy. Additionally, despite having a decent offering for a new OS, Ubuntu phone is still behind Apple and Google when it comes to apps. (That is to be expected for such a new system.)</p><p>Given everything Canonical has gotten right, coupled with the oddly intuitive user interface, I can't but find the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition interesting, and I want to see Ubuntu phone continue to grow and get smarter. </p><p>As a result, while I wouldn't recommend general consumers buy the phone, I'd definitely urge tech savvy buyers or developers interested in trying something new, to check out the Ubuntu Meizu MX4 and help further improve the upstart operating system's offering.</p><h3>Lastly: the specs</h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Meizu MX4 was originally released in September 2014 running Google's Android operating system. <span>Compared to top-end Android handsets, like </span><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s6-review-2015-4" title="The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the best Android phone, but still not better than the iPhone">the Samsung Galaxy S6</a><span>, the Meizu MX4's hardware isn't anything to write home about. But, when you consider its price, the Meizu MX4 is reasonably well stocked.</span></span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">luminium alloy body and matte back cover</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">5.4in 1920x1142, 418 pixel per inch (ppi) display. A display's ppi density is a general indicator how sharp a display will be, anything above 400 is pretty impressive. </span>For comparison-sake, the near twice as expensive the iPhone 6 comes with a with a 4.7in 1334x750, 326 ppi Retina HD display.</li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Then there's its octa core Mediatek-made 2.2GHz processor and 20.7 megapixel (MP) rear camera sensor, which again, on paper make the Meziu MX4 great value for money. </span>Octa-core processing - WHICH DOES WHAT? - is a growing trend in the world of smartphones that work to improve handset performance and improve their multi-tasking capabilities.</li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The 20.7MP rear camera comes with a similar Sony Exmor RS sensor to those seen in </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-xperia-z3v-review-photos-2014-10" title="The new Android phone coming to Verizon has a super sharp camera that puts the iPhone to shame ">the Japanese firm's top end line of Xperia smartphones.</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> The Sony-tech is designed to improve the Meizu MX4's picture quality by removing background noise in images.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It only comes with a piddly 16GB of storage.
