The organization was also accused of holding ties to the white supremacist terrorist group the Ku Klux Klan, which led some people on social media to name Kemper a "<keyword id="610187" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kkk">KKK</keyword> princess."</p><p>"I love my Ellie," Burgess posted on Instagram alongside Kemper's apology."Oh, &amp; P.S. At the time, she was a 19-year-old student at Princeton.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/ellie-kemper-sorry-debutante-ball-racist-past-2021-6">In her apology</a>, Kemper said that the century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an "unquestionably racist, sexist, and elitist past."</p><p>"I was not aware of this history at the time, but ignorance is no excuse," the apology read. "I was old enough to have educated myself before getting involved. I unequivocally deplore, denounce, and reject white supremacy. At the same time, I acknowledge that because of my race and my privilege, I am the beneficiary of a system that has dispensed unequal justice and unequal rewards."</p><p>The Veiled Prophet Ball has been hosted in St. Louis for more than a century. The organization didn't welcome Black members until 1979 after the civil rights group, Action Committee to Improve Opportunities for Negroes (ACTION), held protests at the ball.</p><p>In a statement given to Insider, the Veiled Prophet Organization responded to the controversy surrounding its past.</p><p>"Upon reflection, the Veiled Prophet Organization acknowledges our past and recognizes the criticism levied our way," the statement read. "We sincerely apologize for the actions and images from our history. Additionally, our lack of cultural awareness was and is wrong. We are committed to change, allowing our actions to match the organization we are today."</p><p>"The VP Organization of today categorically rejects <keyword id="44060" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Racism">racism</keyword>, in any form."</p>

Tituss Burgess shares support for Ellie Kemper after she apologized for ties to 'racist' debutante ball

Kimmy's over-the-top roommate is Titus (Tituss Burgess).</span></p><p><span>"Titus very rarely lets people see the real Titus and I think Kimmy is someone who gets to see that over the years," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" cocreator Robert Carlock recently told Business Insider. "A&#xa0;big goal for Titus this season is kind of taking that armor of fabulousness off, but not at the expense of the character and what he was going through."</span></p><p>On the second season of the Netflix comedy, which debuts Friday, Titus hits a rough patch with his&#xa0;<span>boyfriend Mikey (Mike Carlsen) and they end up breaking up. The show's producers knew that Titus would need to express his feelings about the relationship's end in an epic way.</span></p><p><span>"We asked ourselves how Titus would deal with this kind of thing," Carlock said. "He would have to express it with the fabulousness of Beyoncé. So in the same way that visual album told a story, we wanted to use it as a framework to tell Titus' similar journey. So to us that was his story in the episode and it wasn't going to be just a little copy of 'Lemonade.'"</span></p><p><span>The show went all out. Cocreator Tina Fey wrote the episode and her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, wrote and composed&#xa0;the episode's songs.</span></p><p><span>"We had a lot of meetings about what visual things do we want to try and parallel to make that connection the real album deals with and connecting into the similar journey Titus has," Carlock said.</span></p><p><span>Helmed by veteran TV director Tristram Shapeero, the episode&#xa0;<a href="http://www.avclub.com/article/how-unbreakable-kimmy-schmidts-lemonade-homage-cam-255594" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">parodied the underwater opening for "Hold Up"</a> by shooting at a Jewish Community Center's pool and replacing the women from Beyoncé's take with Barbie dolls, which Titus collects on the show. The show also&#xa0;shot with an actual city bus at its soundstages in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.</span></p><p><span>"Tristram Shapeero also directed the pilot and has done a bunch of episodes for us," Carlock said of the director. "He just went in with a very clear plan about how to do our version."</span></p><p><span>In the same vein of Beyoncé's project, the show producers wanted to keep the parody secret. It was tough and almost got out while they were shooting on the street in Brooklyn. Someone from&#xa0;</span><span>a local business posted a few seconds of Burgess&#xa0;in the yellow dress on Instagram.</span></p><p><span>"One of our producers went to the business and asked them&#xa0;to please take it down, which I think they did very nicely," Carlock said. "We didn't want that to get out too soon. But it's tricky to be walking around Brooklyn breaking car windows in a giant yellow dress and try to keep it a secret. How 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' pulled off its incredible 'Lemonade' parody episode

To say the least, his experience was less than satisfying.&#xa0;</p><p>He left them an absolutely scathing review on Yelp:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/578797e3dd08954e7a8b4591-800/sub-buzz-9802-1468437093-1.png" alt="Titus Yelp Review" data-mce-source="Yelp"><p class="source"><span>Yelp</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>He started off by pointing out that he is "an Emmy nominated actor for 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' currently streaming on Netflix. That's besides the point. But watch it."</p><p>Burgess&#xa0;went on to call the movers, Frank's Express,&#xa0;the most "unprofessional" workers he's ever dealt with. The movers allegedly said they wouldn't show up until he posted a review on Yelp. Eventually, he did post the review on Yelp. 'Kimmy Schmidt' actor posts the most scathing Yelp review you will ever read

Netflix's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' season 2 gets a teaser and release date

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/54fd103d6da8114f5ead46d3-1200-924/kimmy-schmidt-1.jpg" border="0" alt="kimmy schmidt"><p class="source"><span>Eric Liebowitz/Netflix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>The first season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" premiered on Netflix March 6. </p><p>The Tina Fey comedy follows a group of women saved from a Doomsday cult. </p><p>Business Insider recently attended a preview event of the series a few weeks back in New York City where cast members Jane Krakowski, Ellie Kemper, and Tituss Burgess divulged a bit about the series afterward in a Q&amp;A.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>While a few parts in the show were improvised, Krakowski said much of the comedy stays true to the script.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>"I was asked this question a lot also with '30 Rock,' said Krakowski. "I think people … because of Tina's background with 'Second City' and 'SNL' ... [thought] that there was a lot of improvised stuff."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>"It's actually not quite improvised," she continued. "It is very by the book. And if you make something up, you know, they always just ask you to do it the way it was originally written first."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>In contrast, Kemper said "The Office" was much more improvised, which may not surprise those who watched the comedy.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>"'The Office' was more improvised because it's a different pace," said Kemper. "There's longer moments to breathe, and people would improvise I think a bit more."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>"Here, just in my experience working with [series creators] Tina [Fey] and Robert [Carlock], every word does matter so much," she added. "There's so many words to fit into a line. If I ever improvised, it was just messing up a line. It wasn't … it was just getting the words wrong."</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Kemper said her costar Burgess, who plays her roommate Titus, on the series improvised a few times.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>"There's so much to say or the sentences are so run-on. We would mess up all the time.
