The creator behind those videos has turned it into a profession by launching a company called Metaphysic to make hyperrealistic videos with AI. Chris Umé, a visual and AI effects artist based out of Bangkok, created <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/politics/world/news/liars-dividend-the-more-we-learn-about-deepfakes-the-more-dangerous-they-become/articleshow/82052627.cms">deepfake videos</a> of Tom Cruise with the help of an actor and impersonator, Miles Fisher. The videos show Cruise doing things like playing golf, showing off a magic trick and even biting on a lollipop. These videos quickly garnered millions of views with multiple reuploads on different social media apps as well. The problem with deepfakes The idea behind deepfake videos is to make fake videos look realistic with the help of AI but this technology has mostly received negative criticism due to the dangerous possibilities it offers. There have been cases of deepfake technology used mostly in pornography to create non-consensual adult videos. There’s also the worry that deepfake could be used to manipulate elections by making fake videos of politicians. Deepfake videos still have a long way to go as most of the popular ones can be easily recognised as fake but the technology is evolving and it will only get better. Ethical use of deepfake videos Metaphysic however claims to be different by saying that this technology can actually be used for fun, and to highlight the possibilities of visual effects. Chris Ume joined hands with his brother Kevin Umé and London-based tech entrepreneur Tom Graham to launch Metaphysic. “Our mission is to expand the frontiers of human expression through the ethical application of AI and build a future where everyone can create deeply relevant and delightful content for the communities they care about,” reads the about section of Metaphysic. According to a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/06/tech/tom-cruise-deepfake-tiktok-company/">report</a> by CNN, the Metaphysic founders want to create deepfake videos that can “do everything from making older entertainers appear younger to creating video doubles of famous people that can be used to make commercials.” It’s also not about just making deepfake videos but actually making them look as realistic as possible. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Some examples of the kind of work Metaphysic does include a Gillette razor campaign featuring the American athlete Deion Sanders but in a young 1989 look. The company also brought back two deceased Belgium Football team managers back to life in a campaign for the Belgian Football Association. Metaphysic is also taking an ethical approach for their work by making sure that they get official permission for the subjects they use. In case of the Tom Cruise deepfakes, they were created for fun and Umé did reach out to the Hollywood actor’s management team but did not get a response. He also said that he’s ready to take the videos down and even hand over the TikTok account if Cruise doesn’t approve of it. The guy who created Tom Cruise deepfake videos on TikTok now owns an AI company

<ul><li>A new investigation by Check Point Research finds that TikTok has multiple vulnerabilities.</li><li>An SMS service on the app’s website could send spoofed messages allowing attackers to get a hold of a user’s TikTok account. </li><li>Another vulnerability was found in a TikTok subdomain capable of stealing personal information. </li></ul>TikTok is used by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/tiktok-emerges-as-one-of-the-most-downloaded-apps-on-apple-this-year/articleshow/72344092.cms">over a billion people</a> around the world — primarily kids and teenagers. And, it might not be as safe as you think. "Data is pervasive but data breaches are becoming an epidemic, and our latest research shows that the most popular apps are still at risk," said Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s Head of Product Vulnerability Research. Check Point’s investigation reveals that TikTok’s SMS services to send app download links could be manipulated to send spoof links. Clicking on any such link could give attackers direct access into users’ accounts. There onward, the hackers can do anything from publically sharing private videos, manipulating uploaded content, or even upload new videos altogether.

 In addition to that, a subdomain was found vulnerable to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks. Using the search functionality, attackers could gain access to user’s personal information like real names, date of birth and contact information. TikTok has since fixed both problems but is yet to respond to Business Insider’s request to know if any users were impacted prior to the patch. "TikTok is committed to protecting user data. Like many organizations, we encourage responsible security researchers to privately disclose zero-day vulnerabilities to us. Before public disclosure, CheckPoint agreed that all reported issues were patched in the latest version of our app. We hope that this successful resolution will encourage future collaboration with security researchers," said Luke Deshotels from the <keyword id="7882779" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiktok-security">TikTok Security</keyword> Team told Check Point. TikTok’s good — hackers are better TikTok is available in 75 different languages spanning over 150 markets. It’s a treasure trove of data. "Social media applications are highly targeted for vulnerabilities as they provide a good source for private data and offer a good attack surface gate," said Vanunu. It’s not that the company hasn’t but security measures in place — it’s that hackers are getting better at finding ways to circumvent the system. "Malicious actors are spending large amounts of money and putting in great effort to penetrate into such huge applications. Yet most users are under the assumption that they are protected by the app they are using," Vanunu explained. In recent days, the US has been in an uproar around TikTok’s security. The US Navy and Army had already banned its use by their personnel. "The TikTok app poses a potential national security risk," senior democrat Chuck Schumer wrote to the government. If any of your private TikTok videos inexplicably went public — it could be because you downloaded the app using an SMS

At least 235 million users of Facebook-owned Instagram, China-based TikTok and Google-owned YouTube have been hit by a massive <keyword id="6360618" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-leak">data leak</keyword> and their personal profiles were up for grabs on the Dark Web. According to security researchers from pro-consumer website Comparitech, an <keyword id="9797120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unsecured-database">unsecured database</keyword> was behind this data breach. "The data was spread across several datasets and the most significant being two coming in at just under 100 million each and containing profile records apparently scraped from Instagram," reports Forbes, quoting the security researchers. The third-largest was a dataset of some 42 million TikTok users, followed by nearly 4 million YouTube user profiles. One in five records contained either a telephone number or email address of the users, along with profile name, full real name, profile photo, account description and number of followers and likes, etc. "The information would probably be most valuable to spammers and cybercriminals running phishing campaigns," said Paul Bischoff, Editor at Comparitech. "Even though the data is publicly accessible, the fact that it was leaked in aggregate as a well-structured database makes it much more valuable than each profile would be in isolation," Bischoff said in the report on Thursday. According to the researchers, the leaked data points to a company called Deep Social banned by both Facebook and Instagram in 2018 after scraping user profile data. "Scraping people's information from Instagram is a clear violation of our policies. We revoked Deep Social's access to our platform in June 2018 and sent a legal notice prohibiting any further data collection," a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying. According to Comparitech, data marketing company Social Data later shut the unsecured database after it was reported to them. "Social Data has denied any connection between itself and Deep Social," according to the Comparitech report. Earlier this month, a hacker group known as ShinyHunters flooded a hacker forum with 386 million user records stolen from 18 companies. According to BleepingComputer, ShinyHunters began uploading the databases to a forum where anyone can download them free of charge. Of the databases released since July 21, nine of them were already disclosed in some manner in the past.
