The campaign aims to raise awareness and inspire action towards making the world free from violence against women. This initiative is a part of the global 16 Days of Activism focused on ending gender based violence. The ‘Orange The World’ campaign, that kicked off on November 25th, observed as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and will continue till the International Day of Human Rights on December 10. TikTok will run the hashtag #KaunsiBadiBaatHai on the platform for 16 days with an objective to mobilize users from across the country. The in-app campaign aims to encourage users to show their support by undertaking the #KaunsiBadiBaatHai ‘Rap for Change’ challenge and sporting shades of orange, in their videos. The campaign rap called Kaunsi Badi Baat Hai that users can use as soundtrack for their videos is, written and rapped by Delhi based 16 year old Abbas Ali from Slam Out Loud and composed by Aditya Shekhawat, highlight instances of violence against women and questions existing negative socio-cultural norms. Speaking about the collaboration, Nishtha Satyam, Deputy Country Representative, UN Women India said, “UN Women is committed to making spaces safe for women and young girls, for violence against women and young girls has real consequences and costs. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Shelby Trischler and Mitch LoBuglio met online and he planned to come visit her.</li><li>When LoBuglio had to cancel due to work commitments, Trischler was upset and posted a TikTok.</li></ul>A tale of star-crossed lovers span out of control on TikTok when their planned first date fell apart, and both ended up painted as villains.The narrative evolved as Shelby Trischler and Mitch LoBuglio told their sides of the story, with onlookers switching camps of who they supported multiple times.The furore is an example of how intimate details can explode into view as TikTok vigilantes seek justice for <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-customer-dramas-go-viral-and-make-people-angry-tiktok-2023-5">those they perceive as having been wronged</a>.LoBuglio's bandmates were also swept up into the drama, and worried the backlash was so strong it could end their careers.It started with a video Trischler got partway through making, where she planned to chart her relationship with LoBuglio as it began online, through to their first meeting.She said she was getting close with LoBuglio, a guitarist in the band <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@americandreammachine_" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Dream Machine</a>. They met online, shared some jokes, and realized they had a lot in common, so they made plans for LoBuglio to fly across the country — from Virginia to Arizona — for their first date.They essentially were long-distance dating, Trischler told Insider: speaking on the phone every day, and learning all about each others' lives. LoBuglio even met Trischler's 3-year-old son Dominic over FaceTime. Trischler was helping LoBuglio boost his band's popularity on TikTok, she said, because she had around 40,000 followers and had some tips on how to go viral.She planned to finish the video with her picking LoBuglio up from the airport, both as a way to document their journey together, but also as a way to share his band's music, which would be playing in the background.But the rendezvous never happened. LoBuglio canceled his trip, citing work commitments that he couldn't get round.Trischler was upset, she told Insider, but understood that LoBuglio needed the money, and they agreed to rearrange.Trischler also didn't want all the work on her video to go to waste, though, so she published it anyway on August 5, with a different ending than she'd planned."That's where I fucked up," Trischler told Insider. "Because I put 'he didn't come' instead of 'he wasn't able to come,' and so everybody took it as he ghosted me or he ditched me or something like that — which was not my intention." The views quickly started racking up. Trischler said she kept LoBuglio in the loop, informing him of different milestones — 12,000 views, 25,000 — because she was excited that his band's music was being heard by so many people, like they had always talked about."Being like, hello, I'm helping your band. Look, it's happening," Trischler said. "I did not think that all the women on TikTok were going to freak out and be like, 'Who is this guy? Why is he hurting her?'"While Trischler intended the video to be lighthearted, people in the comments became aggressive. They went to LoBuglio's and his band's accounts, harassing him on his page which had relatively few followers.LoBuglio didn't respond to Insider's request for comment, but his bandmate Shawn Adams told Insider the reaction to Trischler's video was "wild.""I thought it was the end of our career," he said. "I was like, we're done. Nobody even knows about us anyway. Now this is all they know about us. Like, we might as well just give up."Adams said Trischler didn't say anything in her video that bad-mouthed them — she said their song "slaps" — but the people in the comments took it differently and "just started going in on Mitch."This was when LoBuglio texted Trischler, asking her to take the video down, because the band was worried it would harm their reputation.Trischler said at this point, she hadn't heard from LoBuglio in a few days, wasn't checking her phone much, and was trying to move on. When he asked about removing the video, she said "No," not thinking too much about it."It wasn't me being like, no F you, you get dragged through the dirt," she said. "It was just like, no, I'm busy, whatever. Just enjoy the publicity."Adams said the band had a meeting and told LoBuglio to post his own video and tell his own side of the story.LoBuglio, armed with screenshots, did just that."I was super excited to go see this girl," he said, responding to Trischler's TikTok, showing the receipts for the flight he was supposed to get on to go see her on August 10.LoBuglio also seemed to accuse Trischler of painting him as the villain for clout, showing a few screenshots of their conversation — Trischler saying "No" to his request of taking her video down, and "Ur about to go viral. Ur welcome.""She let you guys drag me and my band through the mud," LoBuglio said. "And I mean over half a million people drag me through the mud. And she just let it happen." Adams said the reversal was "insane" after LoBuglio came forward. When people heard his side, and realized he hadn't ghosted Trischler, the hate comments subsided, he said. LoBuglio and the band started gaining thousands of followers too."The amount of love that we've gotten and the positivity that we've gotten since, it more than made up for that day and a half where we thought our careers were over," Adams said. "Now we actually have a shot, you know, we have a chance."But LoBuglio's video took the situation to a whole different level of visibility, Trischler said. His TikTok amassed over 2 million views, and led thousands of people to turn on her instead."I wake up to, I think it was 40,000 messages or something," she said. "And the messages are like, fuck you bitch, we're gonna fucking find you. You're a fucking liar. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."As a single mom, she said, she has a pretty thick skin. But the response was so disproportionate, she said. It frightened her, and she set all of her accounts to private. People even started calling her place of work."I'm afraid to answer my phone, I didn't want to answer my door," she said. "I'll tell you when I posted that, I definitely didn't think I'd be going down this road.""There's millions of people now that have seen this," Trischler said. "And it's turned into like, whose side are you on?"That wasn't the intent at all, she said. Trischler stepped back for a few days to gather her thoughts. But then she decided she wanted her voice to be heard. She un-privated her account and posted another video, apologizing for her lack of judgment with the initial one, and explaining she never intended to make LoBuglio look bad.She said she has now asked LoBuglio to take down his video because the hate comments are getting out of hand. As of the time of publishing, all of LoBuglio and Trischler's videos are still up."I sent him screenshots of these threatening messages and people being like, your kid is fucking ugly, we're gonna come find you," she said. "I'm sending him these screenshots and I'm like, dude, you literally FaceTimed with me and my son for a month and were excited to meet us."On August 13, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mitchlobuglio/video/7266900515479457066" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LoBuglio posted another video</a> thanking his new followers for support, but also urging people not to keep going after Trischler.Adams said he understands how onlookers can get swept up in the drama between two people, but the hate directed at Trischler was "absolutely awful.""She doesn't deserve any of that stuff either. Nobody does," he said. "That is so overblown and such a ridiculous reaction to something that you see on the internet that is just so trivial."Trischler told Insider she is mostly over it now."I'm just freaking Shelby from Arizona," she said. "I'm not gaining anything from this, everyone's more invested than I am at this point."Next week, she added, her ill-fated love story will be old news."It'll be Chelsea and Dan who are fighting on TikTok," she said. "Everyone will care about them instead of Shelby and Mitch."

A planned first date between 2 lovers on TikTok spiraled out of control after the guy canceled his flight

<ul class="summary-list"><li>It's becoming increasingly common for women to film harassment as it's happening and post it online.</li><li>Insider spoke to several women whose videos about such incidents gained widespread attention.</li></ul>It was a regular day in June when 22-year-old Yula Delcore got on a ferry in Larkspur, California, to visit her boyfriend in Santa Rosa. Delcore described the journey as an "easy-peasy" commute that she makes once a week, but she told Insider that this time, she heard a man calling out from behind her when she got off the ferry. He was following her, she realized. "I told him, 'Before you even start, I do have a boyfriend, so I'm not really interested,' and he said, 'I don't care,'" she told Insider. As the man followed and heckled her, she took out her phone."He literally made me so uncomfortable to the point where I thought, 'I ought to film this.' No one else was around us, so I thought if something were to happen, I could at least get proof of it," she told Insider. In recent years, it's become increasingly common to film instances of harassment or discrimination and post them online, especially on TikTok, where they often blow up — as Delcore's did — receiving hundreds of thousands of views.Women told Insider that filming harassment is a response to a long history of women's stories being doubted and belittled; they see it as a way to collect indisputable evidence of their experiences. But gaining attention under such circumstances can have disastrous consequences — many women have faced unprecedented backlash when commenters dismissed their experiences, subjecting them to even greater levels of online abuse. Experts say the explosive and adverse reactions to these videos show how unstable social media can be when it comes to women's safety. And while posting harassment footage may feel impactful in the moment, more needs to be done to create sustained real-world change.<h2>TikTok makes it easier than ever for women to expose their harassers</h2>Now that nearly everyone has a smartphone, filming troubling encounters has become increasingly common. "It's like saying, 'Hey, this happens. It happens every day. And now you see it, you can't deny it,'" Laurie Essig, a professor and the director of gender, sexuality, and feminist studies at Middlebury College, Vermont, told Insider. Delcore told Insider she decided to post footage of her harassment on TikTok so she could "expose the kind of stuff that us women have to go through all the time," adding that she did not expect many people outside her relatively small following of 43,000 people to see it. While most of Delcore's previous videos received between 1,000 and 5,000 views, her <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@princessangelfairy/video/7113339147074424110?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">footage</a> of the incident was viewed more than 530,000 times.Delcore is not the only woman to gain widespread attention with such a video. Natalie Rose, a 29-year-old fitness trainer, shared a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@natalieroseuk/video/7079142667136896262?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;q=natalieroseuk&amp;t=1664292384265">video</a> of a man who followed her while walking in Birmingham, England, this past March.Rose told Insider she reported the incident to the police but also wanted to post her footage of the man's face on TikTok to warn other women in her area. "I thought that if they saw my video, they could be a little bit more wary and look out for him," she said. Rose's TikTok received 6 million views, and the unexpected attention quickly became overwhelming. "A TikTok can go all over the world, and mine did. But I think if you don't expect it to, it can be a little bit of a shock," she said. TikTok's algorithm recommends content to users based on what they have previously watched, regardless of whether a user is following the creator who posted the content. Videos about harassment are often viewed by hundreds of thousands of people under popular tags about the topic. One such hashtag, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/safetyforwomen">#safetyforwomen</a>, which Rose used in her video caption, has 124 million TikTok views. <h2>Many women who post these videos risk being discredited and blamed for causing the incident </h2>Some creators told Insider they'd hoped to feel empowered by filming their harassers but found going public had the opposite effect.Caitlin Wilkinson, 23, filmed a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@lilbluzipoo/video/6857638355660705030?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">TikTok</a> showing her confronting a man on a subway, who she says was harassing another woman in the car. The man is not visible in the video, as Wilkinson only filmed her own face during the interaction. While the TikTok comments about Wilkinson's videos were overwhelmingly positive, with users praising her for defending the unknown woman, Wilkinson told Insider that she noticed some people posted negative comments about her on Facebook after her TikToks were mentioned in a <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/shelbyheinrich/tiktok-sexual-harassment-nyc-subway">BuzzFeed news article</a> about her that began to circulate on the platform. "I just felt gaslighted by these guys who didn't believe my side of the story," she said. Delcore said she was "shocked" to receive comments that defended the unknown man who was following her; these comments — which were seen by Insider — appeared to largely be from male users."There were a lot of comments that were like, 'What did this guy do wrong?,' and I was shocked to see so many of them, because I'm obviously uncomfortable in this video," she said. Other comments seen by Insider appeared to be from men telling her she should have handled the interaction differently. She told Insider she felt they were suggesting the harassment was her fault because she chose to respond to the man's questions instead of ignoring him. <h2>The response to videos portraying harassment can be retraumatizing for victims </h2>Delcore described the online abuse she faced after her video circulated as "retraumatizing," a <a href="https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2010-09708-008">psychological phenomenon</a> whereby the symptoms experienced after a traumatic experience can reemerge when a new situation carries reminders of the original event.Delcore said that the flood of skeptical comments she received from men caused her to relive and reprocess her experience with harassment. "For them to tell me nothing happened and nothing was wrong in the video, it was traumatizing, because they're enabling this kind of behavior," she said. Wilkinson told Insider that the high number of views on her videos, paired with responses from viewers who said they did not believe her account, made her feel anxious to the point where she would not want to post about harassment on TikTok again if she were to witness or experience it. "Going viral really changed my whole perspective on the internet. I always thought it would be cool, but to get so much hate, it was really confusing for my brain," she said. Rose told Insider that another source of trauma following her video was the harrowing <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@natalieroseuk/video/7079142667136896262?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7079142667136896262&amp;q=natalieroseuk&amp;t=1664292384265">stories</a> women shared about their own experiences with harassment in the comments."It was too much. I had hundreds of messages, and people were sharing all these horrible stories. I guess I opened myself up to that by posting about it, but it just felt like once the comments started, they didn't stop," Rose told Insider. <div type="image" title="A picture of Natalie Rose." height="750" width="600" msid="95807972" hostid="261"></div>Delcore told Insider that she feels some people share too much information on social media, a practice sometimes referred to as <a href="https://www.insider.com/trauma-dumping-tiktok-mental-health-experts-creators-2021-9">"trauma dumping."</a>Kalliopi Mingeirou, the chief of the ending violence against women campaign for UN Women in New York, told Insider that there can often be a "multiplying effect" on social media, where if some women share their stories of harassment, other women begin to step forward, as was the case with the <a href="https://www.insider.com/metoo-accusers-5-years-later-where-are-they-now-2022-10">#MeToo movement</a> that also began on social media. According to Mingeirou, this can create adverse emotional effects when women start to feel responsible for the other women they have inspired to speak out, particularly when these other women are mainly organizing in one person's comments section and replying to her post. "We cannot expect women to bear the responsibility of sharing their experiences in digital spaces because of all these negative effects which expose them to more violence and trauma through reliving the experiences of other survivors," she said. <h2>These videos alone are unlikely to lead to tangible change</h2>It can be tempting to see this wave of videos calling out sexism and harassment as a route to social change — especially when they gain widespread attention. But it may not be that simple. Essig told Insider that "circles of support" — where women flood each other's comment sections in an attempt at supporting one another — are also often unlikely to create tangible effects, as sexism remains rife online. There are "rabbit holes on the internet where some young men are amazingly, horrifyingly misogynist," she said.Essig believes that the most effective way to create social change regarding harassment is to take these conversations off social media and into the real world. She drew a comparison to the Black Lives Matter movement, which saw a resurgence online after a video of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police in 2020 went viral, which then led to <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-global-george-floyd-black-lives-matter-protests-2020-6">worldwide protests</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/13-concrete-changes-sparked-by-george-floyd-protests-so-far-2020-6">vows to reform police systems</a>. "Making videos is a powerful way to get a conversation started, but the conversation has to turn into organized, in-person resistance. Black Lives Matter did not just remain a hashtag," Essig said.<div type="image" title="A photo from a BLM Protest." height="4000" width="5333" msid="95807974" hostid="261"></div>Mingeirou told Insider that women could begin to organize in person by joining or starting local activism groups and taking part in campaigns that lobby governments and lawmakers to put practical measures in place to prevent harassment, such as better street lighting and reporting systems. This would help take the pressure off of individual women posting their stories of sexual harassment, who would no longer be a spotlighted spokesperson for the issue, but part of a localized effort against harassment, Mingeirou said. Ultimately, activists are hoping for a future in which solving the problem of harassment is more equally shared between women and men, and between law enforcement, social organizations, and government bodies. "Sharing stories in online spaces can have consequences that end up putting the survivors in more danger, and survivors need to be aware of that risk," Mingeirou said. We believe in you!" and "You're brilliant!" Several people have posted messages of congratulations underneath a false status update suggesting Holmes was "cleared of all charges."Holmes fandom is complex, blurring the line between irony and genuine reverence, and even arguing supporting her is a feminist issue.<h2>Holmes' cult following frequently labels her a 'girl boss'</h2>The term "girl boss" was popularized in the 2010s to refer to women who had achieved an aspirational level of professional success. Since the concept was <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2020/01/9044921/girlboss-culture-women-work">called out</a> for a perceived lack of inclusivity and focus on wealth, it has begun to pop up satirically online with Elizabeth Holmes <keyword id="12128421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stans" source="Orion">stans</keyword>, <a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/a36806930/elizabeth-holmes-fans-tikt-tok/">dubbed "Holmies" by some observers</a>, using it frequently. An Instagram account called @elizabethholmesupdates asks in the bio "Are you on the right side of herstory?" and posts updates about Holmes and the court case. On September 10, the account shared the photo of the Holmes lookalikes outside the courthouse."In solidarity [with] Elizabeth Holmes put on your best black turtleneck," the caption read. "United we slay, divided we fall."The owner of the account, Annuncia Roberts, told Insider she started the account as a joke for her own <keyword id="11896019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="entertainment" source="Orion">entertainment</keyword> after following Holmes for a while."At the core, the situation is almost funny," she said. "I don't know how people fell for her schtick."TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@crudestoil?">Rania Blaik</a>, who has over 10,000 followers, has posted several videos about Holmes. According to TikToker <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/15/style/serena-shahidi-glamdemon2004-tiktok.html">Serena Shahidi</a>, who has 424,000 followers and frequently posts about Holmes, a woman finding fanfare as a villian is admirable, either ironically or un-ironically.Shahidi told Insider that people love that "there's a woman at the center of it all.""I guess there's empowerment in the idea of having a female villain because that's typically something that's like very taboo," she said. "There is something kind of progressive about the idea that a woman in the <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword> isn't playing by anyone's rules." Male villain figures in popular culture have been idolized numerous times. Benning, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who specializes in the personality disorder of psychopathy, has a theory about the kinds of people who celebrate those who are widely regarded as having behaved immorally or antagonistically.He told Insider the people who develop attachments to infamous public figures generally score highly in tests of <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/basics/agreeableness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreeableness</a> - defined in psychology as being kind, considerate, and inclusive when dealing with other people."Relatively agreeable people tend to be more likely to want to form these parasocial relationships," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A TikToker received 33 million views after she filmed two women who appeared to mock her at a baseball game.</li><li>Viewers immediately turned against the women, condemning their apparent behavior.</li></ul>Internet users have turned against two women captured in the background of a viral video where they appeared to mock an influencer for taking a selfie while attending a baseball game.A TikToker who goes by <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jackielabonita" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@jackielabonita</a> and has over 258,000 followers on the app posted <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jackielabonita/video/7224738861270715690" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video</a> on April 22 which showed her posing for photos in an outdoor seating area at what appeared to be a sports stadium while two women laughed and gestured from two rows behind. Based on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CrT9cVOOVLT/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an Instagram post</a> by the influencer and apparel worn by her and others in the audience, the incident appeared to take place at a baseball game at Minute Maid Park, a stadium in Houston, Texas, while the baseball team Houston Astros played. In the on-screen caption of the upload, the TikToker wrote that her confidence disappeared after two "random girls" could be seen pulling faces behind her, one of whom stuck her middle finger up at the camera and appeared to record the influencer on her own phone and call her "lame.""Realizing they were talking about me. Feeling super self-conscious. I wanted to cry," text-to-speech audio overlaid on the clip said.In the video's caption, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jackielabonita" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@jackielabonita</a> wrote "Please be nice," and included the hashtags <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/meangirls" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#meangirls</a> and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/meangirlvibes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#meangirlvibes</a>.The video went mega-viral, receiving over 33 million views.Although the influencer turned off the comments to the video, multiple users received millions of views after they stitched the upload and shared their own thoughts on the incident.<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@t514grl/video/7224989934271122731?q=stitch%20%40jackielabonita&amp;t=1682340093109" target="_blank" rel="noopener">One user</a> said they were "hurt" at seeing women being "mean" to other women, and described the behavior as "deplorable," <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@alexishealth/video/7224983279651261738?q=stitch%20%40jackielabonita&amp;t=1682340093109" target="_blank" rel="noopener">while another</a> reassured the influencer that she was beautiful and the two women were in the wrong. The reaction to the video spilled over onto Twitter too, where it caused a stir. The majority of users <a href="https://twitter.com/byIerszx/status/1650242795402063873" target="_blank" rel="noopener">supported the TikToker's decision</a> to take photos, and <a href="https://twitter.com/xcornejo2013/status/1650296062513659905">suggested it was unfair</a> to mock her for it, although <a href="https://twitter.com/PyroFirenzi/status/1650263723108433923">some thought</a> she shouldn't have posted the video to her large audience, as it led to such backlash toward the women.Even rapper <a href="https://twitter.com/iamcardib/status/1649972293093715969" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cardi B</a> weighed in, telling her 29.5 million followers that she would "put that ring to use," appearing to reference the chunky jewelry the influencer was wearing on her fingers.Some users took it further and tried to track down and reveal the identities of the women featured in the video, and shared their findings online, in an act known as doxxing. <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/9781119429128.iegmc009" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The International Encyclopedia of Gender, Media, and Communication</a> published in March 2020, describes doxxing as a form of "online harassment that breaches perceived privacy boundaries by releasing information through online mass media channels." One TikTok seen by Insider, which showed a screenshot of a personal Instagram account purportedly belonging to one of the women, was viewed 6.9 million times. Many more users circulated what they believed to be the identities of the women, including details such as where they studied at college, LinkedIn accounts, and businesses where they believed they were employed, prompting internet users to leave a slew of one-star reviews on the company's Yelp page.Insider reached out to the business identified in several TikToks but was unable to confirm whether either woman worked at the company. Insider was also unable to confirm whether the women identified are in fact the women in the video, and was unable to reach them for comment.One TikToker appeared to get caught in the doxxing crossfire as she said viewers mistook her for one of the women in the video. The uploader, who goes by <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@niceuu6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@niceuu6</a>, received 1.3 million views when <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@niceuu6/video/7225015932316388654" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she stitched</a> the TikToker's video on April 23, and wrote in an on-screen caption that she'd received insults for something she didn't do, and asked people in her caption to stop harassing her and her mother.In <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@niceuu6/video/7225386222871383338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a follow-up</a> she said she and her family had received so much abuse she had to private her Instagram account, but people simply took this as proof of her guilt. "You can never win," she said in the video. Legal repercussions for doxxing can vary from state to state in the US. In 2022, Nevada passed a bill banning the activity and gave victims the opportunity to raise civil action against their doxxer, and in California a person who attempts to put others and their immediate family in danger through doxxing can receive a one-year sentence in a county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/07/world/what-is-doxxing-explainer-as-equals-intl-cmd/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN reported</a>.Social-media users are increasingly prone to siding with a person they perceive to be a victim of bullying behavior, although this sentiment can lead to more severe harassment of the perceived perpetrators.On March 29, Micah Lussier, a contestant on the Netflix reality show "Love is Blind," wrote in an Instagram statement that she would be turning off her comments to protect her mental health after she was <a href="https://www.insider.com/love-is-blind-irina-micah-mean-girls-controversy-2023-3">labeled a "mean girl" on the show</a>, sparking a wave of online backlash. It gives a sneak-peek into how the year 2019 went for the platform. </li><li>The video has already garnered close to 37 millions views on YouTube within three days of launch. </li></ul>2019 was full of ups and downs for TikTok. Mid-year, Bytedance’s TikTok was asked by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to be taken down from Google and Apple app stores. However, TikTok got Sandhya Sharma on-board to keep a check on government policies and relations in India and the matters were later settled in court with a promise of self-regulation. After dodging that bullet, the second half of the year was when TikTok emerged as one of the leading platforms in the country. The official insisted that "relatives" and their female hosts always keep a distance of three feet between them at night.Both officials cited in RFA's article claimed that male Communist Party officials had never tried to take advantage of the women. The official in Kashgar also claimed to RFA that the Uighur families are "very keen" to welcome the Han Chinese men into their homes.It is almost impossible to hear from Uighurs in Xinjiang, as any communication with journalists or people outside the region can land them in detention. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A new creator has been thriving in the space Andrew Tate left behind while in jail.</li><li>Pearl Davis appeals to a similar audience, and spiked in popularity since Tate was arrested.</li></ul>While Andrew Tate is <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/andrew-tate-denied-bail-romania-prison-rape-human-trafficking-charges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">locked up in Romanian jail</a>, mostly unable to communicate with his fans, another creator is gaining traction.Hannah Pearl Davis, known as just Pearl, is booming in popularity with a brand of anti-feminist content that lands differently since she is a woman herself.Davis, who is 26, saw her YouTube audience grow 50% in the three months since Tate was detained, per the analytics tool Social Blade. Her subscriber base jumped from around 800,000 to 1.3 million in that timeframe.She has increasingly been nicknamed the "female Andrew Tate," including by critics who consider her the latest celebrity misogynist.Her podcast "The Pregame" sees Davis debate with and criticize feminists, praise Tate's teachings, and present herself as a rare champion for a male point of view.Unlike Tate, Davis does not consider herself a misogynist, telling Insider via a direct message that "I don't hate women."Instead, she argued, criticism of her work is the inevitable backlash now that "finally there is a form of media that advocates for men."As well as a ready YouTube audience — which viewed her videos some 200 million times since December — Davis regularly goes viral on TikTok. There, videos with the hashtag #justpearlythings have over 300 million views, making headway on the platform where Tate's soundbites also found their most receptive audience. Breakout clips include her arguing that <a href="https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMYxshLqE/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it's a woman's fault</a> if her male partner cheats, that men should be able <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@sa_ra_garvey/video/7107658749883583750?_r=1&amp;_t=8apPXkxxBSw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to hit women back</a>, and that women don't deserve <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@queenofhatertok/video/7137067248707177774?_r=1&amp;_t=8apQQqHaDiv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a man "who makes 6 figures"</a> if they are obese. "A lot of you guys are shitty wives," Davis said in one recent video, viewed 3.2 million times, blaming infidelity on a woman's looks and behavior. "You don't cook for your man, you belittle him, you nag on him all the time. You don't treat him like a man." In several follow-up videos Davis responded to the negative criticism she'd attracted and doubled down on her view."Are Western women typically known as good wives?" she asked. "Are they sought after all over the world, or are men getting their passports and going elsewhere?"In another video, which got 1.6 million views, she said that when unmarried women get pregnant it is "99.9999% the woman's fault."<h2>A pivot to gender-wars content that paid off fast </h2>Davis grew up in Chicago, Illinois <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOu594bXkq0&amp;ab_channel=JustPearlyThings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a 10-bedroom home</a> with her nine siblings and parents, software entrepreneurs Dan and Jennifer Davis.Her mother for a time was on the board of directors for UN Women USA, an independent charity that supports the gender-quality programs of the United Nations.In 2020, Davis started posting on both TikTok and YouTube, starting with lighthearted content about her life: subjects like the time her dad bought a massive waterslide for their backyard, or funny moments with her mom.She amassed around 100,000 followers on her first (now-deleted) TikTok account with a series called <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/tiktok-why-did-we-break-up-232821902.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Breakup Quiz,"</a> where she helped people work out why they were dumped.She also gained some exposure from her brief <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@baewatch86/video/7148274289186327851?_r=1&amp;_t=8WJabTFMPn9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">relationship in 2021 with Oneya D'Amelio</a>, a TikToker who found early fame on the app for his aggressively positive messages under the name "AngryReactions."Davis told Insider she got interested in YouTube in college, and from there became set on a media career."I really enjoyed watching Ben Shapiro, Thomas Sowell, and some other YouTubers," she said, namechecking two heroes of the US political right known for stridently opposing left-wingers.In the past year, Davis has entered that same sphere, teaming up with manager Coby DeVito, a former colleague of Shapiro at The Daily Wire.Davis started gaining consistent traction around May 2022, surging from a modest 25,000 subscribers to over half a million in six months. The boom was driven by increasingly edgy content. She moved to London and found success filming interactions with people on the street, asking them questions about dating, like if "sleeping around" is different for men or women, or whether it matters what a woman's "body count" is.In more recent months Davis has leaned into snappy podcast clips with so-called "red pill" guests (<a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/red-pill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a "Matrix" reference</a>), most notably <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TuilbZ1j58&amp;ab_channel=JustPearlyThings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tate himself</a> before his arrest.Her videos boast of her "owning" feminists in debates and mocking the beliefs and values of modern women.As of March, Davis has over 1.3 million subscribers on YouTube and 410,000 TikTok followers. On YouTube, her following is almost twice as large as the 700,000 Tate had when he was banned from the platform.Davis attributes her success to fighting men's corner, saying there is "not a lot of empathy" for them online."Men are discriminated against in society by the legal system and feminists at large," she told Insider."The women that follow me watch it because they too see the larger issue, men watch it because finally there is a form of media that advocates for men."<h2>Other creators see warning signs in Pearl's success</h2>Laura Danger, who has a TikTok audience of 460,000 for her social-justice content, told Insider she believes Davis is emulating Tate's success, reaping the rewards of perpetuating harmful gender dynamics as "another cog" in the misogyny machine."The deeper she gets into this misogynistic messaging, the more she's being rewarded by these men," Danger said. "She is getting a ton of attention, especially from men who are saying, 'Yes, finally someone is telling the truth, you are the one, you get it.'"Steven Bonnell, better known by his streaming alias Destiny, has debated Davis several times in YouTube videos, arguing against her claims that "women like to be cheated on," that women have it "easier" in society, and her reluctance to believe <a href="https://www.insider.com/andrew-tate-tiktok-explains-loverboy-method-he-is-accused-of-2023-1">the sex-trafficking allegations against Tate</a>.Bonnell told Insider that Davis and those like her create a strong connection with audience by saying "things that people on the other side of the political aisle won't acknowledge," including ways some men feel the dating scene is unfair.He said she also rightly focuses on men's mental health as a wrongly marginalized issue. But from there, he argued, she leads audiences to wrong conclusions.Barrett Pall, a life coach and TikToker with 2 million followers who posts about fighting misogyny, sees Davis as part of a larger reactionary trend. Davis is a response, he said, to male dominance "truly being challenged at a very, very big scale in a way that we've never seen before." "She is part of patriarchy's ability to have women sit and internalize misogyny, which harms themselves," he said.Responding to that claim, Davis told Insider: "Misogyny is the hatred of women. I don't hate women.""For some reason acknowledging a basic truth like men and women are different is labeled as misogyny nowadays," she said. <h2>Riding a tide of rage-clicks</h2>Mia Shah-Dand, the CEO of the tech consultancy Lighthouse3, noted that inflammatory content drives engagement, and can tempt creators to make claims they don't necessarily believe."Even well-meaning people become dupes in their whole cycle of just getting hatred ratings," she said. "They just found this market that they can tap into and they just will ride this wave to the top."Davis denied exaggerating her opinions for rage clicks, though she did concede that short clips on platforms like TikTok inherently don't have much nuance.Davis' posts have got her into occasional trouble, including a brief ban from TikTok in January, from which she quickly recovered."I will say a lot of clips can be taken out of context in a 3-hour podcast, so many don't get the context of the discussion," she said. "But all in all, no, I stand on what I say."Pall said while Davis is clearly enjoying the notoriety and the followers for now, she may one day find she is "hurt by her own rhetoric.""She has to be perfect and not end up a single mom, or not end up pregnant, out of marriage, or gaining weight, or whatever else it is," he said. "She's on a pedestal, and the only place to go from there is down."
