Officially called T-1 but nicknamed Avni, the mammal has already killed 13 people in the town of Pandharkawada. It's been two years that that she's been eluding the park authorities <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-45819780" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">according to the BBC</a>. The plan is to track her down using a popular cologne manufactured by Calvin Klein, Obsession for Men. The science is simple. The cologne exudes a pheromone called civetone which is basically a chemical substance produced by animals that affects the behaviour of other animals of its species. In this case, civetone is derived from a civet, a cat that is often confused for a monkey. It’s actually quite commonly used in other colognes as well. In the past, the similar experiment was conducted at the Bronx Zoo in New York where the cologne was appreciated by the zoo’s resident jaguars. Last resort The tigress and her two 9-month old cubs roam a 150 sq km <keyword id="6398165" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jungle">jungle</keyword> that includes 5,000 inhabitants across 20 villages. And, they’ve been witness to 3 killings since August. In response, there have been a total of 100 camera traps set up, goats and horses have been used as bait and, as a last resort, sharpshooters have been sent to contain the mammal. So far, all efforts have proved futile. Animal activists are concerned that the authorities will end up shooting and killing the animal since the forest officials don’t possess the required expertise. AK Misra, a forest official in the region, told the BBC that their intention isn’t to shoot, but if the tiger attacks then they’ll have no option but to defend themselves. That being said, the supreme court of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> already weighed in stating that it would not interfere if the animal was killed during capture. Right now, officials have a team of 500 men on board to capture the tiger include a number of vets who’ve been equipped with tranquiliser darts. Other tools at their disposal include three cages, nylon and a selection of machines. The unanswered question remains why is the tigress attacking humans the first place? So far, the company has reported a more than $5 billion loss for the first six months of 2022, with some analysts predicting the total losses for this year will eclipse last year. Meta declined to provide a comment for this story, but a spokesperson for the company said that Meta doesn't break out the financial details for its Reality Labs segment. Ives said the amount of money Meta has spent on its metaverse venture so far is concerning, especially given the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-connect-metaverse-push-meta-wall-street-desperate-2022-10?utmSource=twitter&amp;utmContent=referral&amp;utmTerm=topbar&amp;referrer=twitter">updates it provided</a> this week, including a new $1,500 headset and a version of avatars with legs, that he called "underwhelming." Mark Zgutowicz, an analyst at Benchmark, said though he doesn't know for sure, he estimates that at least 60% of losses for Reality Labs are due to the massive research and development costs that go into building an entirely new world. "There is no real metaverse, at least from a scalable standpoint, until we all can wear glasses that don't make us look like an alien or something," he said. Zgutowicz pointed out that Meta has legitimate reasons for trying to build everything themselves, though. "It's hard for them to go out and acquire other unique software companies because they're so tied down with regulatory burdens that they have to stay within their house and build something organically," he said. "Where the transparency could be better is how and when they expect to get a return on this spend," Zgutowicz added. New York, Apr 6 () Nadia, a 4-year-old female Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus after developing a dry cough, in what is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected with COVID-19 in the US, raising new questions about human-to-animal transmission of the deadly virus.The tigress, along with six other big cats, is thought to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo keeper, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement on Sunday.Nadia, her sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions had developed a dry cough and decrease in appetite, it said, adding that all the cats are expected to recover."Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers," the CNN quoted the zoo as saying."It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries," it said. The test result has stunned zoo officials. "I couldn't believe it," zoo director Jim Breheny said.The coronavirus, first detected in humans in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, is believed to have spread from animals to humans, and a handful of animals, including two dogs, have tested positive in Hong Kong.The pandemic has been driven by human-to-human transmission, but the infection of Nadia raises new questions about human-to-animal transmission.According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), no other animals at the zoo are showing symptoms. In addition, there is "no evidence that any person has been infected with COVID-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats," the CBS News quoted USDA as saying. The USDA said "this is the first case of its kind" and "further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19."The World Organisation for Animal Health says studies are under way to understand the issue more and urges anyone who has become sick to limit contact with pets. It also added evidence to suggest the end of the 'founder culture' era in Silicon Valley.Larry Page and Sergey Brin's leadership of Google didn't just shape the technology industry but it also shaped the way in which tech companies were run. Companies drew inspiration from Google's freewheeling corporate culture, to which they credited its ability to take moonshot bets and innovate. Startup founders looked to Google's dual-class share structure, as a lesson in how to maintain control over their companies. Page and Brin's determination to hold on to voting control within their companies even after it debuted on the stock market, was seen as a model for other firms to follow, allowing their founder's vision to take precedence over investor or shareholder wishes. (The company would later create a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-larry-page-threatened-to-resign-over-voting-control-dispute-report-2019-3">third class of stock</a>, as Page worried that he would lose voting control over the company). Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg held on to the majority of the company's voting power. Snap's Evan Spiegl and Robert Murphy issued their company shares on the market, but shareholders <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-ipo-no-voting-rights-investor-letter-2017-2">hold no voting rights</a> at all. Page and Brin's announcement comes at a time when Wall Street is far more wary of startup founders leading their companies. Although tech giant is a far cry from younger unicorns, and its cofounders have been famously absent from the company's more mundane management responsibilities for years, they still remain the face of the company, according to Andrew Frank, an analyst at Gartner. "Even though Google is such a huge company, it's always been identified with its founders," Frank said. Page and Brin's departure from Alphabet is "a rite of passage where the company is no longer really influenced by the culture of the founders."Page and Brin seemed to embrace that role in their letter announcing that they were stepping down, writing that "we believe it's time to assume the role of proud parents - offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!"To Wall Street, that's a good thing. Facebook's string of scandals and Snap's continued financial and operational struggles have raised concerns about founder culture in Silicon Valley. Founder culture also allowed startup founders to lead their companies unchecked, leading to often-disastrous mismanagement of company finances and strategy. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travis-kalanick-uber-takedown-untold-story-2018-3">Uber's Travis Kalanick</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-adan-neumann-statement-on-stepping-down-as-ceo-2019-9">WeWork's Adam Neumann</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-history-of-silicon-valley-unicorn-theranos-and-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-2018-5">Theranos's Elizabeth Holmes</a> are perhaps the most infamous examples of this scenario. Ivan Feinseth of Tigress Financial Partners called the announcement a "natural progression for the company's evolution," and said that Google CEO Sundar Pichai, slated to be Alphabet's next CEO, had "done a great job so far." On Thursday, it opened its first menswear-only store near Columbus Circle, a block from Central Park. "We've been looking for a store in Manhattan for 20 to 30 years," Blake Nordstrom, co-president of Nordstrom, told Business Insider at the store opening. But it also faces unprecedented regulatory scrutiny and employee revolts from within - placing Pichai in a precarious position as he attempts to navigate the company's next chapter.A long-time Google employee, and CEO since 2015, Pichai has faced many of these challenges before. But as he ascends to the top job in Alphabet, the pressure on him will be greater than ever before. The disparity between Alphabet's roaring business and the existential threats it faces is shared by rivals Facebook and Amazon, and reflects a new reality for tech companies: The money has never been better, but there are dark storm clouds on the horizon.The company is increasingly in the political firing line. Critics of big tech, notably US presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, are calling for Alphabet and other tech firms to be broken up on antitrust grounds. <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/youtube-ceo-susan-wojcicki-and-the-debate-over-section-230-60-minutes-2019-12-01/">And ongoing debate about Section 230</a>, the US law that helps shield tech firms from liability for objectionable content on their platforms, could produce major hurdles for Google and Alphabet if more serious attempts were made to amend of repeal it."From a regulatory and government point of view, a lot of scrutiny that the company is facing, not only in the US but a lot of overseas markets, will continue to be a challenge to navigate, and [to] not let that significantly affect the business," said David Heger, an analyst with Edward Jones.Internally, Google has been wracked over the past two years by sometimes paralyzing internal protests and employee dissent, over myriad different issues - from Google's work with the US military to the company's payouts to executives accused of sexual misconduct. Amid constant leaks and employee activism, the company has now clamped down on its famous culture of transparency, presenting a potential threat to its legendary reputation as a great place to work.Google-owned YouTube is also coming under greater and greater pressure. Facebook has borne the brunt of criticism over content moderation issues in recent years, but the focus has since widened to platforms like YouTube, and its ongoing struggle to police itself for objectionable or illegal content while avoiding perceptions of bias could yields years negative media and political scrutiny for the video-sharing service.Meanwhile, some of Alphabet's other bets are starting to grow up at the exact moment Pichai must take responsibility for them. Waymo, its self-driving car unit, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/27/waymo-valuation-cut-40percent-by-morgan-stanley-to-105-billion.html">has been valued at more than $100 billion</a>, and is well-positioned to be a market leader when self-driving cars hit city streets in earnest over the next decade or so - but only so long as Pichai is able to successfully steer it to a point of technological and commercial viability. Pichai will also be charged with making sense of Alphabet's other, more esoteric development areas, like nascent drone delivery service Wing or smart city firm Sidewalk Labs.Finally - and perhaps most importantly - Pichai must ensure that the company's core business continues to fire on all cylinders, and deliver the healthy growth Wall Street has become accustomed to. "Just continuing the growth engines that the company has done a very good job of," said Heger. "It's going to be a continuing process of how to maintain that lead they have ... and continue to monetize things like YouTube."As it currently stands, industry watchers are optimistic about the 47-year-old tech exec. His appointment is "a natural progression of the company's evolution," said Ivan Feinseth, chief investment officer at Tigress Financial Partners. "The guy's done a great job so far ...
