<ul><li><keyword id="6359288" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shakespeare" source="Orion">Shakespeare</keyword>'s work provides insights into the nature of power and how it is exercised.</li><li>The Tory's ongoing psychodrama might resemble Elizabethan amusements but, unlike Shakespeare, the impacts are real. </li><li>In Shakespeare's bloodiest play, nobody emerges unscathed.</li></ul> The last few years in politics have gifted the keen observer many allusions to some of Shakespeare's best-loved works. From the Midsummer Night's (fever) Dream the electorate might think they are experiencing while looking on at parliament to All's Well That Ends Well (or is it?). But more than surface references apply. Shakespeare's work provides insights into the nature of power and how it is exercised. Shakespeare lived through politically tumultuous times. His playwriting career spanned the reign of two monarchs, Elizabeth I and James I. The England of his plays was forming itself anew following the Wars of the Roses (c. 1455-1487), which established the <keyword id="248351" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tudor" source="Orion">Tudor</keyword> dynasty. They also set in motion the biggest political schism of the age: Henry VIII's infamous divorce from Catherine of Aragon and break with the Roman Catholic Church. It is unsurprising, then, that questions of moral authority, the right to rule and the nature of a good leader are recurring themes in Shakespeare's oeuvre. Recent political events could almost be ripped from the pages of these four plays. 1. Measure for Measure Measure for Measure is about justice and exacting the proper punishment. Set in Itay, the play's population has, under the leadership of a morally lax Duke, fallen into sinful ways. Despairing of his whore-ridden, drink-loving populace, the Duke leaves the kingdom in the charge of his aide, Angelo, only to return disguised as a friar to observe his protegee's progress. Angelo sets about doling out punishment left, right and centre, but comes undone when his lust for a trainee nun overpowers his moral authority. The Duke swoops in at the last moment to restore order, but the audience is left wondering how he justified leaving in the first place. What springs to mind here is ex-prime minister David Cameron leaving government in the aftermath of the EU referendum. His casual singing after having resigned seemed to betray a lack of care for the Brexit debacle. More recently, I'm reminded of another former prime minister, Boris <keyword id="11011" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="johnson" source="Orion">Johnson</keyword>, whose morally ambiguous premiership ended with a series of luxurious holidays as the kingdom crumbled. 2. King <keyword id="211418" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lear" source="Orion">Lear</keyword> Throughout Johnson's scandal-ridden time in office I thought of King Lear, a tale of kingly disconnect. King Lear's court is stacked with flatterers who provide no good counsel so that he can only hear what he wants. The parallels reached their height in the latest Tory leadership contest in which loyalists emerged from the woodwork to endorse Johnson's return. Such shows of devotion were for nought, however, as he decided not to run. Lear is also a family psychodrama. He pits his daughters against each other, asking each to express how much they love him. When Cordelia doesn't do so satisfactorily, she is exiled and the kingdom is bequeathed to her sisters, who promptly oust their father. The play's betrayal speaks directly to the endless in-fighting in the Tory party. What is, however, remarkable about this play, and distinctly absent in the Tory party, is the depth of remorse felt by Lear. Cast out of his castle, Lear experiences life as one of his subjects - reduced to a "bare forked animal" (or no different to an animal). In a scene that will have chilling resonance with the winter much of Britain currently faces due to rising food, mortgage and fuel costs, Lear repents having ignored his people: Poor naked wretches, wheresoe'er you are, That bide the pelting of this miserable storm, How shall your houseless heads and unfed sides, Your looped and windowed raggedness defend you From seasons such as these? Oh, I have ta'en Too little care of this! 3. <keyword id="43827" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="anthony" source="Orion">Anthony</keyword> and Cleopatra Anthony and Cleopatra might best befit the ill-fated and short-lived reign of Johnson's successor Liz <keyword id="1829647" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="truss" source="Orion">Truss</keyword> and her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. From the opening scene, Anthony makes his lack of care for reality known. He dismisses messengers from Rome, declaring: "Let Rome in <keyword id="1280873" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiber" source="Orion">Tiber</keyword> melt, and the wide arch /Of the ranged empire fall! [...] Kingdoms are clay." If love comes at the expense of good leadership for Anthony and Cleopatra, Truss and Kwarteng's fatal flaw was their unbridled love of free market economics at the expense of reality. But both Truss and Kwarteng might have taken note of the end of Shakespeare's tragedy in which Anthony and Cleopatra die in agony. Under Truss's short reign the economy tanked and so did her standing. Her sacking of Kwarteng, in what looked like an attempt to save her premiership, seems itself Shakespearean. It did not stop her from being forced to resign, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. A painful end, to say the least. The lesson from Anthony and Cleopatra, and Truss and Kwarteng, is what you idolise beyond all sense - be it another person or free markets - might just kill you. 4. Titus Andronicus Shakespeare's plays often end with a restoration of order after a tussle for power. <keyword id="808845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="richard-iii" source="Orion">Richard III</keyword> ends with the dawn of the Tudor age and, in Macbeth, the rightful heirs ascend the throne. For some, Truss's successor <keyword id="221875" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rishi-sunak" source="Orion">Rishi Sunak</keyword> is seen as a "safe pair of hands". But what feels more fitting to me is Titus Andronicus. In Shakespeare's bloodiest play, nobody emerges unscathed. Violence begets violence as the body count mounts and Romans, Goths and Aaron the Moor fight for supremacy. Unable to call a general election in the face of terrible polling and imminent difficult decisions on public spending, Sunak faces a daunting task. In the words of Shakespeare's Henry IV, "uneasy lies the head that wears the crown". While we might often focus on Shakespeare's main characters in analysing his drama - the Richards and Macbeths - now is a time to consider the collateral damage The Tory's ongoing psychodrama might resemble Elizabethan amusements but, unlike Shakespeare, the impacts are real. How power corrupts - lessons from King Lear and three more Shakespearen plays

Italy- the land of pizzas, pastas and gelato- is also one of the most visited place in the world. Any traveler's bucket list features Italy and by default, the centre of the roman empire –Rome. While most of us have visited <keyword id="6356059" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rome">Rome</keyword> or are planning to venture out in the city that houses the <keyword id="1248508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colosseum">Colosseum</keyword>, we will probably have the same experience as any other tourist around the world. While the main tourist attractions are not to be missed certainly, there are a few options for the travellers that want to discover Rome with a new perspective, literally.

 A new perspective On my recent trip to Rome, I found myself in the middle of a quiet area in the city called <keyword id="1280874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trastevere">Trastevere</keyword>. Airbnb has introduced trips on its platform which means existing and new local guides can give an insight into living in the city, no matter where you are. I chose to partake my time at an unusual tour which involved walking around the city, with a camera and taking shots of untouched places of Rome ending with a shot of the Italian expresso or the gelato. This sounded right up my alley except I wondered if the camera could be my smartphone because it is usually my only companion. Turns out, I could bring anything that captures moments, so off I went. Famous for its narrow cobbled streets lined with ancient houses, Trastevere is the 13th district of Rome, situated on the west bank of the <keyword id="2215628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tiber-River">Tiber River</keyword>. Its name comes from a Latin phrase meaning “beyond the Tiber”.

]]></cdata></div> While we waited for our trip host <keyword id="4449655" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="antonis">Antonis</keyword>, we looked around the Piazza di San Cosimato where the local market is displayed from morning till noon. Living like a local Smiling from ear to ear, Antonis appeared and then after quick introductions. we went up the cobblestone alleys to <keyword id="4804003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="san-pietro">San Pietro</keyword> in Montorio. This gem is considered the first great building of the High Renaissance and Bramante’s sublime Little Temple is squeezed into the courtyard of the Chiesa di San Pietro in Montorio, on the spot where St Peter is said to have been crucified.

 Antonis taught us simple skills to improve mobile photography as we walked enchanted by the Italian way of life. After clicking more informed pictures, we headed to the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola which is said to be the inspiration to the Trevi Fountain. Antonis was kind enough to take multiple shots of us and even gave us a momento in form of personal polariod pictures. We hiked up a little further to enjoy the aeriel city view from Gianicolo hill and the best part of it all was feeling the wind of change in a part of the city which isn’t tainted by tourists. We proceeded to Santa Maria di Trastevere which is in the heart of this district. This church is unlike any other Roman church with a large 13th century mosaic covering the walls and ceilings of the church, making it a truly breathtaking sight. We ended our walk at <keyword id="4804002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="san-calisto">San Calisto</keyword>'s bar which is Antonis’ favourite and as he’s been living in the city longer than his home back in <keyword id="6357856" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="greece">Greece</keyword>, we believe him.

Ending on a sweet note The bar has unmistakably the best gelato in town and I opted for an ‘Affogato’ which is combination of an expresso shot and gelato usually vanilla or chocolate flavoured. As we walked back to the point where we started from, Antonis offered me his own gelato and I felt like a true Italian who isn’t shy of treating themselves. The three hour tour is too short if you ask me as you can spend hours appreciating the city of Rome the way Romans do. As Antonis says, there’s so much to see in Rome, you can never run out. Crushed cars, smashed statues, and a destroyed water fountain are all at the bomb's mercy as Dom desperately chases it down. Chigi commissioned a dream team of artists to create and decorate it. It's like a Faberge egg of Raphael, Il Sodoma, and Peruzzi. What I've noticed is that everyone tends to overlook the museums in the park (except for <a href="https://galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Galleria Borghese</a> and its collection of Carvaggio paintings and Bernini sculpture). Post lunch, start towards the Colosseum, the huge amphitheater, which was built in between 70 and 82 AD for gladiatorial and wild animal fights. 
 
Catch the sunset at the right side of the central building on Piazza del Campidoglio where you're treated to a surprise panorama of the Forum from above, with the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum as a backdrop. 
 
Enjoy your dinner at the TramJazz, a vintage cable car converted into a restaurant and cozy concert hall. The amazing journey starts at piazza di Porta Maggiore with a glass of wine and amazing starters. While the car is moving and the music repertoire starts, along the journey you get to see the San Lorenzo fuori porta, viale Regina Margherita, Valle Giulia, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, San Giovanni Laterano, Foro Romano and the journey ends at the Park of the Celio in front of the Colosseum. 
 
Day 2 
 
Spend the day exploring the heart of the city, the Tiber Bend area, the Tridente/Spanish Steps, and Villa Borghese park. 
 
Rome is well known for its statues, particularly, the talking statues of Rome. Two main talking statues, Pasquino and the Marforio, are a must visit and do check out il Babuino, Madama Lucrezia, il Facchino and Abbot Luigi. 
 
Take out time in the afternoon and walk along Via del Corso, the main shopping street. It is one of the most enjoyable window shopping places and is best experienced afternoon. 
 
Try some street food for lunch, from epic pizza strips to delicious arancini (fried rice balls). 
 
Follow it to the beautiful Spanish Steps and take a table at one of the rooftop hotels that has a good view of the Gianicolo. Watch the city turn gold during sunset from ‘The Hassler’ that offers a good view from atop the Spanish steps. You might need to book a table with a view in advance. 
 
Walk or take a ride to the Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in the city. Follow the tradition of throwing a coin into the fountain to ensure you visit Rome again. 
 
Set on a romantic cruise on the Tiber River, surrounded by the unparalleled views of some of the city’s most famous monuments, such as Castel Saint ‘Angelo, illuminated against the inky Roman sky. Indulge in fine Italian wine along with gourmet dinner. 
 
Day 3 
 
Next day, book a beautiful rail trip to Venice early in the morning. 
 
Reach Venice and take a gondola ride for two. There’s nothing more romantic than punting slowly past beautiful baroque and Renaissance buildings. Pick up a gondola at any of the main bridges – the Rialto or Accademia. Just look out for the driver’s boater hat and striped shirt. 
 
 
 
Next to the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district, the canals and streets narrow and the city becomes a village. Shop in quiet alleys for romantic gifts like Venetian masks and Murano glass. 
 
Catch the sunset at St Mark’s Square and wander between the arcades past street orchestras to Caffè Florian for tea on the terrace. 
 
Wandering just as dawn breaks in the beautiful and quiet ambience of Venice. 
 
Have a leisurely drink in Piazza San Marco while listening to the music, and ask your partner for slow dance in the piazza by the water. 
 
Day 4 
 
Head to San Marco early in the morning when it is still pretty quiet with the sounds of the Duomo's bells ringing. Sit outside and enjoy with a cup of coffee. 
 
There is a legend of Sotoportego dei Preti, a small passageway between two houses where the magical heart is carved just above the low arched entryway. From Campo de la Bragora off the Riva degli Schiavoni head up Calle del Dose, to Via Salizada del Pignater and here you’ll find Sotoportego dei Preti. If you are in a relationship, touch the heart together and your love will be eternal. If you are single touch the heart alone and you will find love within one year, as the legends have it. 
 
For passionate, religious masterpieces by Venetian painter Titian head to Church of the Frari. This old Gothic church in the low-key San Polo district is a Renaissance art gallery. Stroll hand-in-hand with your lover through hidden alleyways and quiet squares on the way. 
 
 
 
Take a motorboat a few miles across the Venetian lagoon to the un-spoilt islands nearby. Wander Burano’s streets of pastel houses and bargain with lace sellers or shop for signature coloured glass ornaments on Murano. 
 
Make sure you’re back in time to catch the Grand Canal light up at sunset from the majestic, 16th century Rialto Bridge. Meander past its archway shops selling handmade gifts. Walk over the wooden Accademia Bridge for a romantic afternoon’s browsing of contemporary art at the Peggy Guggenheim museum.
