Thunderstorms, rain bring down homes and power supplies along with temperatures in North India

Monsoon to advance in various parts of India this week; Delhi to see thunderstorms

New Delhi, Jun 25 () Even as monsoon reached the national capital on Thursday, two days earlier than the usual date of June 27, rains are likely to remain subdued over Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department on Thursday declared the onset of monsoon here and said the monsoon has further advanced into "some more parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, entire Delhi, some parts of Haryana and most parts of Punjab". However, rainfall activity over Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh is likely to remain weak for the next three days, said Sathi Devi, the head of National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC).Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting service, said the monsoon has reached Delhi but the rains will remain subdued. "We can expect light, patchy rains on Thursday evening and Friday. Dry weather will prevail on June 27 and 28," he said. However, the overall monsoon is likely to be normal in Delhi this year. Normally, the wind system reaches Delhi on June 27. From this year, the IMD revised the onset date for monsoon. Earlier, the date for monsoon's arrival in the national capital was June 29. Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the regional forecasting centre of the IMD, said the northern limit of the monsoon now passes through Nagor, Alwar, Delhi, Karnal and Ferozepur. Monsoon clouds had led to rains in some parts of the city on Wednesday but the weather department had said the onset would be declared on Thursday. Rainfall data from all weather stations for 24 hours till Thursday 8.30 am is required to declare the onset of monsoon, Srivastava had said. The southwest monsoon advanced further to cover most parts of Punjab and some parts of Haryana on Thursday, the Meteorological Department in Chandigarh said. The wind system had reached the northern parts of Punjab, and Chandigarh, on Wednesday, bringing rains at many places. "The monsoon has advanced into most parts of Punjab and some parts of Haryana. The northern limit of monsoon passes through Nagore, Alwar, Delhi, Karnal and Ferozepur," the MeT department said Thursday. The maximum temperatures settled a few notches below normal limits in the two states and at their common capital Chandigarh. Chandigarh recorded a high of 34.1 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal limit. In Haryana, Narnaul's maximum settled at 34.8 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, while Hisar recorded a high of 36.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal. Karnal, which received light rain during the day, recorded a high of 35 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. Ambala recorded a maximum of 34.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Patiala in Punjab recorded a high of 35 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Amritsar and Ludhiana, which received light showers, recorded maximum temperatures at 33.5 degrees Celsius 33.2 degrees Celsius and, respectively. The MeT has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab over the next two days. Meanwhile, thunderstorms wrought havoc in Bihar claiming more than 80 lives, leaving many injured and causing widespread damage to property since the previous day, the state's disaster management department said Thursday. According to a statement put out by the department, a total of 83 people have died in 23 districts of the state upon being struck by lightning, with Gopalganj accounting for the maximum number of 13 casualties. Reports from the districts said more than 20 people were injured and admitted to hospital upon receiving injuries in lightning which has caused widespread damage to houses and belongings of the residents. The weather department has predicted that the inclement weather could persist for some time to come. Monsoon reaches Delhi early; over 80 killed in thunderstorms in Bihar

The much-awaited Southwest <keyword id="6358301" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">Monsoon</keyword> finally arrived in Delhi Tuesday morning bringing respite from scorching heat, with weather officials saying the onset has been 16 days behind the usual date, making it the most delayed in <keyword id="2351148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="19-years">19 years</keyword>. In 2002, the monsoon had covered Delhi on July 19. "The monsoon has arrived in Delhi," senior IMD <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword> <keyword id="11617394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="k-jenamani">K Jenamani</keyword> said after a spell of rains drenched parts of South Delhi Tuesday morning. The IMD said, "Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and winds with speed of 20-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of most places of Delhi, NCR (Bahadurgarh, Gurugram, Faridabad, <keyword id="11626657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="loni-dehat">Loni Dehat</keyword>, Noida) Gohana, Sonipat, Rohtak (Haryana) Khekra (UP) during next 2 hours." Normally, monsoon reaches Delhi by June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8. Last year, the wind system had reached the capital on June 25 and covered the entire country by June 29. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency, said the monsoon made a "weak onset" over Delhi and only patchy rainfall is predicted in the city over the next three days. He said the monsoon trough, which ran along the foothills of the Himalayas, has now shifted over the central parts of India due to low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Gujarat. "After the low-pressure systems dissipate in two to three days, the monsoon trough will again shift towards north, increasing rainfall in the region," he said. The weather department has had a tough time forecasting the advance of monsoon over Delhi this year. After several wayward forecasts, the IMD Monday acknowledged that "such type of failure by numerical models in the prediction of monsoon over the capital is rare and uncommon". The IMD had earlier said monsoon would hit Delhi on June 15, which would have been 12 days early, but the wind system entered a "break" phase. In early June, the <keyword id="6410326" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="met">Met</keyword> office said the conditions will become favourable for the monsoon to advance to Delhi and other parts of northwest India by July 7. Later, it said Delhi will get its first monsoon rains around July 10. The weather department revised the forecast yet again on Saturday, saying the monsoon may reach the capital in the next 24 hours. But it kept the city waiting on Sunday and there was hardly any rainfall on Monday too. According to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the monsoon had reached the capital on July 7 in 2012 and on July 9 in 2006. "In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon showers on July 19. The city had recorded the most-delayed monsoon arrival on July 26 in 1987," he said. Central Delhi is the most rain-deficient district in the country this monsoon, receiving only 8.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 132 mm since June 1, when the season starts. It has recorded a shortfall of 94 per cent. Overall, Delhi has so far received 67 per cent less rainfall than normal, putting it in the category of "large deficient" states. Although the rainfall plummeted the national capital's temperature, it has however disrupted normal life. Massive traffic jams were witnessed in ITO, Ring Road, nearby area of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Barapullah, Delhi-Noida border, Chilla Border, UP Gate, Delhi-Gurugram road and in Palam. In an advisory to commuters, the <keyword id="6357103" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-traffic-police" source="Orion">Delhi Traffic Police</keyword> said: "As per IMD report thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly." Apart from traffic jams, waterlogging was reported in all the low lying areas of the city. According to the authorities, multiple flights were delayed, while two have been diverted so far to Amritsar and Jaipur. If you are travelling to Delhi, Chandigarh, and Uttarakhand — beware of severe weather

Soaring temperatures and ill-timed closure of canals for maintenance left kinnow <keyword id="45092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="farmers" source="Orion">farmers</keyword> in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district, with no choice but to switch to sowing moong, cluster bean and <keyword id="6359181" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cotton" source="Orion">cotton</keyword> crops. "What could we do? Harvests were negligible in the last couple of years. Both blooms and fruit dropped for the third consecutive year. Due to scarcity of water, I could not sow anything this year. Now onwards, I intend to focus on cotton and wheat. Since this year, the season for cotton and wheat has already gone by, I sowed the less water-intensive crops (moong and cluster beans)," farmer Ranveer Jhatwal from Chak 25ML told 101Reporters. Jhatwal had been growing kinnow on 24 bighas of land for 15 years. But last year, he uprooted his orchards from 12 bighas, taking out the remaining this year. But Jhatwal is not the only farmer to take such an extreme step. Several small and big farmers in Rajasthan have been doing so. Heat and lack of irrigation ruined 80% to 92% of the orchards this year, forcing nearly every farmer to uproot his orchard, as compared to just a few who did so last year. Statistics furnished by the Horticulture Department reveal that out of 11,540ha under kinnow, 115ha of orchards were uprooted until May 17, and by June 3, the figure stood at 289ha. Farmers continue to uproot their kinnow orchards in every tehsil of the district. The kinnow disillusionment Orchards made their first appearance in Sriganganagar within two to three years of the Gang Canal coming up in 1927. However, it was in the past two decades that horticulturists saw fruit orchards literally bloom in the district. Even as sweet lime, guava, pomegranate, dates, amla and lemons thrived, kinnow was their most profitable fruit. While incentives extended by the National Horticulture Mission were a big draw, pest infestations on their cotton crop resulting in huge losses finally saw farmers opt for kinnow cultivation. Sriganganagar district alone produces 80,000 metric tonnes of kinnow annually, a large part of which was exported to China, Russia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Australia and Bhutan. Joint Director of Agriculture (retd) VS Nain, who served earlier in Sriganganagar, said: "Wheat, mustard and cotton were the crops traditionally grown in this district. But when expenses on pesticides rose sharply following caterpillar attacks around two decades ago, harried farmers were compelled to spray nearly 30 to 40 rounds of pesticides to save a single crop of cotton. This was when they switched to kinnow. And it didn't disappoint them either; they earned ample profits on every crop. Unfortunately, the last three years brought them repeated losses and forced them to uproot their orchards." Narrating his woes, farmer Mahendra Kumar of Chak 25ML recalled how his 50-bigha orchard once fetched him Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh annually, but he couldn't break even in the last three years. "In 2020, there was very little produce, and in 2021, I earned a meagre Rs 5 lakh after spending Rs 7 lakh on inputs. This year, the intense heat and lack of irrigation caused the blooms and fruit to drop. Two years ago, I uprooted 10 bighas; last year, I uprooted another 12 bighas; this year, I uprooted another 5 bighas of orchard land," Kumar said, adding that he now intends to grow cotton since crop from a single bigha can earn him up to Rs 1 lakh. Usually, one has to wait four years for a kinnow crop after planting an orchard and hold on for seven years before one can harvest the best fruit. But presently, even farmers who planted saplings only two years ago are uprooting their orchards, anticipating losses in future. Farmer Bhupendra Singh of Chak 11ML had laid his orchard on 9 bighas of land at a total cost of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. He has uprooted his entire orchard. With a heavy heart, Singh said, "What is the point in keeping this orchard, when I cannot profit from it? My neighbour, farmer Jagseer Singh, also uprooted his two-year-old orchard." Excessive heat and lack of irrigation water also led farmer Ashok Chaudhary of village 24GB to uproot his orchard. "There were no blooms for the past two years. Excessive heat wilted my plants," Chaudhary told 101Reporters. "Last year, I uprooted 15 bighas of my orchard and planted mustard on this land, which yielded 5 to 6 quintals per bigha of produce. Recently, I uprooted another 10 bighas. Cotton has also proved more profitable than kinnow for me." Explaining why uprooting their orchards is their best option, farmer Jhatwal said, "One has to spend Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per bigha every year on the kinnow crop. It's a burden when the produce falls short consecutive years." Mercury spike, water scarcity, among others, are the biggest threats. Assistant Director of the Horticulture Department Priti <keyword id="17684" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bala" source="Orion">Bala</keyword> pointed out the temperatures in March were unprecedentedly high in the last two years. "Temperatures between 25 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees in March-end are ideal for flowering. But this year, temperatures touched 40 degrees, she explained. "High temperatures can cause flowers and fruit to drop. This was also the time when canals were shut for repairs, preventing farmers from accessing much-needed irrigation water." Analysing the situation, VS Nain noted that the Water Resources Department must keep the needs of farmers in mind as and when they shut off irrigation canals for necessary repairs. Currently, they are turned out in April-May, which is when orchards need irrigation water. The rising prices of cotton in the mandis also drew farmers to cotton cultivation, Bala added. Though the department has advised farmers to remain patient "since cotton prices can also be unstable". Furthermore, the failure of the kinnow crop has not been confined to Sriganganagar alone, Agriculture Officer (Horticulture) Rajendra Nain in Horticulture Department Sriganganagar told 101Reporters. High temperatures wreaked havoc on the fruit trees in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana; compelling farmers in Abohar and Fazilka districts of Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana to uproot their orchards. Seeking compensation for the threat to their livelihood When orchards are uprooted, there's a threat to many kinnow-related industries, as well. There are around 36 kinnow packing and grading establishments in the district, each set up with an investment of Rs 35 lakh to Rs 1 crore. These grade the kinnow, apply preservatives on the fruit and pack them for export. Babu Khan Rizvi, the owner of one such wax and grading plant, told 101Reporters, "The destruction of the orchards spells disaster for us. If the orchards are uprooted, what will happen to us? Each plant employs around 100 to 150 labourers. Us factory owners and workers will have to pay the price." In light of these developments, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) <keyword id="96979" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="youth-wing" source="Orion">Youth Wing</keyword> has submitted a memorandum to the district administration. BKU (Youth Wing) District Secretary Shivprakash <keyword id="2394445" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="saharan" source="Orion">Saharan</keyword> emphasised, "The government ought to conduct a survey, and fix an amount of Rs 1 lakh per hectare as disaster relief compensation." Kinnow growers get just one crop a year, but the inputs needed are equal to that required for two crops, he pointed out. Hence, the administration must offer corresponding compensation. Monsoon to hit Kerala tomorrow, heatwave in Northern India to last another week

The flood situation in Bihar worsened as the water entered fresh areas, affecting over 62,000 more people in 16 districts, taking the number of flood victims to more than 75 lakh, a bulletin by the state Disaster Management Department bulletin said. The number of affected panchayats increased to 1,260 from Monday's 1,240 though that of the flood-hit districts remained at 16. There was no fresh report of deaths in flood-related incidents in the state and the figure stood at 24. The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Tuesday with nearly 14,000 people across three districts being affected, an official bulletin said. On Monday, over 9,200 persons were suffering due to the deluge across four districts. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 13,800 persons are hit due to floods in Dhemaji, Baksa and Morigaon districts. Dhemaji is the worst-hit district with more than 12,000 people suffering, followed by Baksa (1,000 persons affected) and Morigaon (over 800 people). Meanwhile, the flood situation in Uttar Pradesh improved further as three districts were dropped from the list of affected places, officials said. On Monday, a total of 19 districts in the state were listed as affected by the flood, however, Mahrajganj, Pilibhit and Siddharth Nagar were removed from the list the next day, they said. Sixteen districts in the state are still in the official list of places affected by the floods. According to Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, a total of 517 villages in these 16 districts are affected and 268 have got marooned. Sharda river in Palliakalan (Lakhimpur Kheri) and Ghaghra in Turtipar (Ballia) are flowing above the danger mark, he said, adding that relief and rescue operations are underway. Very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh, while some locations in the eastern part of the state received heavy showers. According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm, accompanied with lightening, also occurred at some places in the state. Rain or thundershower is very likely at most places in the state from Wednesday to Friday, the MeT department said. Delhi received sporadic light rains as high humidity continued to trouble residents. The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative figures for the city, recorded 8.6 mm rainfall till 5:30 pm. The Lodhi Road and Ayanagar weather stations recorded 3.2 mm and 1.3 mm precipitation, respectively. The city recorded a maximum of 36.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, the meteorological department said. Earlier, the IMD had predicted 'moderate to heavy rains' in the city from Sunday evening to Wednesday. The IMD has forecast that heavy rainfall is likely in isolated places of coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, till August 15. While Mumbai is expected to receive light to moderate showers, neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri may witness heavy rains at isolated places, an IMD official said. "A similar forecast has been issued for Pune, Kolhapur and Satara districts as well till August 15. However, districts in North Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha may receive light to moderate rainfall in the same period," the official said. Some parts of Himachal Pradesh received light rainfall, with the MeT Department forecasting rains till August 17. Una and Nahan each received 2 mm rainfall, while Kangra 0.4 mm and Sundernagar 0.3 mm, Shimla MeT Dentre Director Manmohan Singh said. Rains have been forecast in the hill state till Monday. The maximum temperature in the state increased by one to two degrees during the last 24 hours, he added. The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Una at 34 degrees Celsius and the lowest in Keylong at 13 degrees Celsius, Singh said. In Punjab and Haryana, the maximum temperatures hovered close to normal. According to the MeT forecast, rain or thunder showers are likely at many places in Haryana and Punjab over the next two days. Top Indian cities brace for a wet weekend after Met Dept forecast two weeks of 'above average' rain

Here are some good and bad news. Monsoon would be on time and would hit the Kerala coast in the next 3-4 days as the conditions are favourable, however, it would not provide any respite from the scorching heat to people across north and central India. Currently, temperatures across most parts of the country were recorded 5 degrees Celsius above the average temperatures. 
 

	A slight respite is expected from the dry and hot westerly winds in the northern India from May 30 with forecast of thunderstorm, dust storm and rainfall. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over the next few days. Monsoon will hit the Kerala coast by May 30," DS Pai, head, long range forecast, <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword>, told the Economic Times. According to the <keyword id="57032" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Met-office">Met office</keyword>, conditions were conducive for the advancement of monsoon into Arabian sea, Maldives, Comorin area and some more parts of Bay of Bengal during next two days. GP Sharma, V-P-meteorology, Skymet Weather Services, said: "The monsoon progress has been stuck till Hambantota in <keyword id="2871404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka-and-Bay-of-Bengal">Sri Lanka and Bay of Bengal</keyword> since the past few days. In the next 24-48 hours we can expect it to pick up," he said. Moreover, light rain and thunder showers continue to lash the southern part of India apart from the coastal belts of <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> and Karnataka. 	But people across north and central India would not get any relief from the hot winds till the weekend.
