As per the latest data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), dispatches of passenger vehicles (PVs) from manufacturers to dealers were 2,75,352 units in December 2022. Two-wheeler domestic wholesales stood at 12,11,966 units last month as against 10,45,052 units in December 2022, a growth of 16 per cent. Similarly, <keyword id="411593" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="three-wheeler" source="Orion">three-wheeler</keyword> wholesales were higher at 50,537 units last month as compared to 38,693 units in December 2022.

Greaves Cotton unveils new two-wheeler, three-wheeler EVs

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales declined by about 2 per cent year-on-year in August as companies curtailed dispatches to reduce inventory at dealers amid a drop in demand. According to data issued by the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (<keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword>), the total passenger vehicle dispatches in the domestic market stood at 3,52,921 units last month compared to 3,59,228 vehicles in August 2023, a dip of 1.8 per cent. Two-wheeler wholesales rose 9 per cent to 17,11,662 units last month against 15,66,594 units in the year-ago period, it added. Scooter dispatches last month climbed to 6,06,250 units from 5,49,290 units in August 2023, a growth of 10 per cent. Similarly, motorcycle dispatches from companies to dealers increased by 8 per cent to 10,60,866 units last month from 9,80,809 units in August 2023. The total three-wheeler sales grew 8 per cent to 69,962 units last month against 64,944 units a year ago. "Looking ahead, as the country enters the festive season, demand for vehicles is expected to grow, which will also be duly augmented by the recent announcements of PM E-DRIVE and PM-eBus Sewa Schemes of Government of India," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said. Passenger vehicle wholesales dip 2% in August as OEMs cut dispatches

However, the latest proposal to set a deadline of 2023 for two-wheeler makers and 2025 for three-wheeler makers has the companies up in arms. In a meeting with representatives of two and three wheeler manufacturing industries, the central think tank of India, the NITI Aayog on June 21, has asked the industry majors to draw up and present a plan to switch to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> (EV’s) in the coming years, in two weeks. However manufacturers have shown disappointment with the plan sitting that they have already been forced to deal with an accelerated timeline for the new emission norms that are due to sweep in in 2020. While Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, reportedly called it ‘shock and awe’, Venu Srinivasan, Chairman, TVS Motor, told the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/two-wheelers-three-wheelers/india-inc-wants-nitis-ev-juggernaut-to-move-out-of-the-fast-lane/articleshow/69920504.cms">Economic Times</a> that the government seemed to “negate in one stroke” the strides made by India in building the world’s largest <keyword id="411149" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler-market">two wheeler market</keyword>. While Bajaj and TVS argued for more reasonable timelines, Pawan Munjal who heads India’s largest two-wheeler company, Hero Moto Corp, did not even attend the meeting on Friday. Further, the companies argued for fiscal incentives to promote manufacturing and sales of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. “I’m in awe of the apparent willingness to subsidise EVs — an approximate ₹1 lakh per vehicle — to help achieve reasonable price parity with ICE two- and three- wheelers for an estimated minimum industry size of 25 million by 2025,” Bajaj said. However, the Niti Aayog reportedly has the support from two-wheeler EV startups, represented by Tarun Mehta, founder of Alther Energy, and Sulajja Motwani of the Firodia group. However, the current manufacturing capacity of the startups is too low to meet the government’s target.

India’s top two-wheeler makers are on a collision course with the government over the deadline for electrification

The most notable trend in EV penetration has been witnessed in the three-wheeler category, where EVs have surged ahead in overall sales. According to the data, 53.61% of all new three-wheeler vehicles purchased this year (2024) were electric, making this segment the leader in <keyword id="20421629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-adoption" source="keywords">EV adoption</keyword>. The two-wheeler segment has also shown encouraging signs of EV adoption, with electric vehicles accounting for 4.97% of all two-wheeler sales so far in 2024. While the percentage is lower compared to <keyword id="20412606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="three-wheelers" source="keywords">three-wheelers</keyword>, the two-wheeler category holds significant potential for growth, given its dominance in India's overall vehicle sales market. As more consumers seek cost-effective and <keyword id="20991927" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmentally-friendly" source="keywords">environmentally friendly</keyword> alternatives, the penetration of EVs in this segment is expected to grow further in the coming years. However, in the four-wheeler segment, the adoption of EVs remains relatively low, with electric cars making up just 2.14% of total car sales this year. Despite this, the increasing availability of EV models and government incentives are expected to drive further growth in this segment. Interestingly, the penetration of electric buses is higher than that of electric cars, with 3.20% of all new buses sold in 2024 being electric. This trend highlights the growing importance of sustainable public transport solutions as cities aim to reduce emissions and promote cleaner alternatives in mass transit. "Electric vehicles offer a very compelling solutions because they do not emit any tailpipe emissions so that improves their air quality that reduces their air pollution. It also reduces the carbon emission so it helps India to meet with its climate goals and generally, electric vehicles have lower operating cost as compared to the IC engine vehicles," said Samhita Shiledar, Director RMI to ANI. On a state-wise level, the Vaahan dashboard data highlighted that Goa leads the country in EV penetration, with 14.20% of all new vehicles sold this year being electric. Tripura ranks second, followed by Chandigarh in third place. Delhi also stands out with a 10.72% penetration of EVs in total vehicle sales, showcasing the capital's push towards sustainable urban mobility. On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh reported the lowest EV penetration, with only 1.09% of new vehicles sold being electric. In terms of total number of EV sales across all segments in India, the two-wheeler category dominates the electric vehicle market in India, accounting for approximately 51% of total EV sales this year. As World EV Day highlights the global commitment to cleaner mobility solutions, India's data reflects a promising shift but a long way to go towards electrification across various vehicle segments.

Pune, Jan 23 () Italian auto maker Piaggio Vehicles' Indian arm on Thursday announced upgrading its entire three-wheeler range to new emission standards and also revealed the prices of the BSVI-compliant diesel three-wheelers.
With this, the company has become the first three-wheeler maker in the country to have upgraded its entire range to BSVI, it said.
The diesel range boasts of a completely new power pack with a 599 CC engine along with a 5-speed gear box and new aluminium clutch, Saju E S Nair, Piaggio Vehicles India Executive vice president for commercial business said at an event.
While the upgraded cargo range comes with a larger cabin, the passenger range comes with new safety doors for commuters.
The alternate fuel range has been fitted with one of the most refined drive-trains available in the industry with a 230CC 3-valve hi-tech engine, he said in a presentation.
"The new BS VI performance range reinforces the company's leadership in innovation and technology for providing solutions for last mile transportation. The 'Power Max' diesel range will enable our customers to earn more through better load carrying capability, faster turnaround time and improved maintenance intervals significantly reduce the cost for the customer," he said.
Similarly, the 'smart' alternative fuel range is a benchmark for superior pickup, NVH and urban driveability, he added.
The company also announced a price increase of Rs 45,000 and alternative fuel range by Rs 15,000 over the BSIV products.
With this showcase, Piaggio has one of the largest products range in the last mile mobility in India for both cargo and passenger carrying applications. 
"We are delighted to be the first 3-wheeler manufacturer in India to be completely BSVI ready with our entire range of products. We had started our preparations for BSVI norms well ahead of time and therefore today we are well placed for the transition from BSIV to BSVI," Piaggio India Managing Director and CEO Diegio Graffi said. Piaggio upgrades three-wheeler range to new emission norms

New Delhi, Feb 11 () Around 43-48 per cent of new three wheelers and up to 17 per cent of the new two wheelers sold in the country by 2024 could be electric vehicles (EVs), a report by Crisil Research said. In the four wheeler segment, however, the traction is expected to remain low with EV sales accounting for just 5 per cent of the new sales, it noted. The study looked at demand, supply and policy growth drivers for EVs such as battery costs, government subsidy and charging infrastructure, besides conducting a segment-wise analysis of the cost of acquisition and operation of EVs compared with existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, Crisil Research said. Faster adoption of two- and three-wheelers is a function of cost. Typically, electric scooters are cheaper to run compared with ICE scooters. And, e-autos are cheaper to both own and run compared with their ICE counterparts, it said. "In the context, supply will also be a critical factor for adoption. The top five electric two-wheeler manufacturers are expected to increase their capacity for electric variants from 0.4 million units in fiscal 2020 to over 3 million units by fiscal 2024," Crisil Research Director Hetal Gandhi said. In three-wheelers, even incumbent original equipment manufacturers are launching e-autos at a rapid pace, she added. At the other end, sales of personal electric cars will remain in the slow lane due to high acquisition and ownership costs in the absence of demand incentives, Crisil said. The number of cab aggregators though will increase as there will be a better operational economies and subsidies, it added. " "In the commercial vehicles space, subsidies to state transport undertakings will drive sales of electric buses for intra-city operations. That goes up to around $50,000 if you add on the 1,000-mile battery and options. The pill-shaped pickup comes with innovative features like a fold-down work table in front and a built-in bed extender. It'll also accommodate a camper shell and be available with all-wheel-drive. Canoo says the stubby truck will go into production in 2023. There's no word on pricing yet. <h2>Faraday Future FF91</h2><div type="image" title="Faraday Future FF 91" height="1080" width="1920" msid="87225756" hostid="261"></div>Faraday Future first unveiled the FF91 sedan in 2017 with plans to start selling it in 2018. Due to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faraday-future-running-out-of-money-report-2018-10">host of financial struggles</a>, that never happened. Flush with cash after going public in July, Faraday Future is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faraday-future-spac-deal-public-how-came-back-near-death-2021-8">back from the brink of death</a>. It aims to start delivering the FF91 next summer. The company claims the FF91 will deliver 1,050 horsepower and sprint to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. New Delhi, Apr 8 () The coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing lockdown will lead to shake-out in electric two and three-wheeler industry with smaller players unable to survive the "extreme short term" folding up, according to Society of Electric Vehicle Manufacturers (SMEV). However, in the long run there is a silver lining as electric vehicles will find more acceptance with people now realising how air quality and environment has improved during the stay-at-home period with internal combustion engines staying off the roads, SMEV Director General Sohinder Gill told . "It is a day-to-day operation these days and monitoring being done everyday basis because in the network across India all shutters are down, which means for the last 25 days the retail is zero," he said when asked about the situation on the ground at present. Apart from the uncertainty of when the lockdown will be lifted, he said it is also unclear if the customers will really come back to showrooms as discretionary spends will always be secondary. "No one is going to purchase automobiles so soon and within that electric vehicles, which were already having a question mark, people will have second thoughts," Gill said. He further said with showrooms closed, the biggest issue is that of finance due to lack of sales. "If the retail earnings stop you cannot order materials. So many of the small and medium players who don't have deeper pockets are already passing through extreme cash crunch situation. You will find that in the process closure of some of the smaller players who are not able to linger on...It is an extreme short term view," Gill said. Only the players who have some sort of back support, being part of a parent organisation or are flush with funds or has a perspective of persevering through this phase, would be able to sail through, he added. Gill further said startups which are well funded will also be able to manage but those who were trying to put ideas together and bring a product to the market, seeking investment will pass through a tough time. "Their progress would be delayed by a year or so. There will be a time lag...There will be a lot of churning, specially in electric two and three-wheelers," he said. On the positive side, he said many fly by night small operators, who were creating negativity in the market with their sub-standard products and aftersales service, are expected to stop operations thereby leaving behind only serious quality players in the market. Commenting on the long-term, he said there is a "silver lining" in the coronavirus pandemic as there has been a drastic improvement in air quality and environmental pollution when internal combustion engines have been off the roads during the lockdown. "Even in the larger perspective of government level or industry level or at consumer level, this is a revelation that how much air can be cleaner or how much atmosphere can be better if there is some sort of control if there is a substitute available," he said. Coronavirus: Shake-out in electric two, three-wheeler segment expected in short term

Chennai, Two- and three-wheeler maker <keyword id="201434" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TVS-Motor-Company-Ltd">TVS Motor Company Ltd</keyword> on Saturday said it had logged 17.5% growth in sales last month. In a statement the <keyword id="24975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="company">company</keyword> said it had closed last month selling 272,084 units (two <keyword id="968668" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="wheelers">wheelers</keyword> 258,239, three wheelers 13,845 units) up from 231,571 units (two wheelers 215,619 units, three wheelers 15,952 units) sold in the month of December 2019. According to <keyword id="46156" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TVS-Motor">TVS Motor</keyword>, exports grew by 28% last month with shipments totalled 94,269 units up from 73,512 units registered in December 2019. During the <keyword id="4021103" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Third-Quarter">third quarter</keyword> of the current financial year, two-wheelers posted sales of 9.52 lakh units as against sales of 7.73 lakh units in the third quarter FY20. However, here's one thing we know he's definitely not.This little fellow is what's known as a Piaggio Ape. It's a three-wheeled miniature Italian cargo vehicle based off the popular Vespa scooter, which the Piaggio manufacturer also happens to produce. 'Ape' in Italian means 'bee', and it's a clever reference to the work ethic of this tiny thing. These small commercial automobiles are still popular with companies throughout Italy due to their compact size that allows them to navigate the narrowest of streets and park virtually anywhere.However, as with almost any vehicle ever built, there's a community of gearheads out there who can't resist turning them into racing machines. Ape racing has become a surprisingly popular motorsport throughout Italy that features owners of modified Apes competing in some of the most fun-looking organized races we've ever seen.One of those competitors is Loris Rosati, an Italian driver and builder who transformed this particular Piaggio Ape into the perfect compact racer for the track.Loris: In Italy, the Ape is very well known because it is used by children aged 14 to 18 to go to school and by the elderly to drive around as a means of work.Narrator: Powered by a Honda motorcycle engine and sporting that unmistakable Lightning McQueen livery, Loris's custom Ape might be the most fun you can have on three wheels.Loris: It all started out as a joke with an old Ape that I used to drive around at home. Later I discovered that here in Italy there were racing competitions with these vehicles. Then with the help of my father, we made a racing Ape and at 13 years old I competed in my first race. Initially, in my Ape we had kept its original 50cc engine. Then we developed and switched to a 125cc engine and I went up one category with this vehicle.The engine we added to it comes from a 2002 Honda Hornet 600. It is a 4-cylinder engine and makes 100 horsepower. , while the rest we built ourselves, starting from the chassis, braking system, exhaust, transmission, etc. There is practically nothing left of the original 50cc Ape, but the functionality of the front brake, accelerator, rear brake pedal, clutch and the way you change gears has remained the same as the old Ape.I started competing in 2007 and currently have won 5 Italian championships, I participate in events all over Europe, the most recent was in Belgium, Croatia, Greece, Austria, Germany.Narrator: In addition to his continued success on the racetrack, the creative livery Loris chose for his car has definitely contributed to him being one of the most popular names in the sport.Loris: For the coloring, we were inspired by the movie "Cars" because we wanted to create something unique, that nobody had before and that both adults and children would like. Ape racing turns tiny Vespa-based three-wheelers into race cars

<ul><li>A report by Ola Mobility Institute said that shared transportation will be a major contributing factor in the growth of EVs. </li><li>Two-wheelers and three-wheelers have the highest demand in India. </li><li>However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has multiple challenges. </li></ul>On the Indian roads one cannot miss the overwhelming presence of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. So it’s no surprise that they will form a major part of India’s electric vehicles mission. A report on electric mobility published by Ola Mobility Institute said that it’s shared transportation that can only push the growth of EVs. India has been shifting its gears in transportation to embrace Electric Vehicles (EVs). While news about India’s top auto manufacturers introducing electric vehicle manufacturing doesn’t surprise one now, questions still lurk about the country’s acceptance to EVs because of lack of proper infrastructure. “Unlike Western models, India may not easily kick start its electric journey by deploying premium electric cars. Instead, it makes sense to focus on electrifying vehicles with the highest demand and utility in the Indian context: two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The rickshaw is already proliferating in electric variants, suggesting it is both viable and practical. Thus, appropriate prioritisation of vehicle segments for electrification may prove to be critical to the adoption of e-mobility,” stated the report. Ola’s report is based on its pilot project in Nagpur, while its on a mission to bring 1 million EVs on Indian roads by 2022. The government expects that 25% of all vehicles on the roads will be EVs by 2030. And the push has to come with two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which today occupy over 80% of total Indian vehicles and also contribute to 35% of pollution in India, according to a report by NITI Aayog and World Energy Council. The Indian government too has been promoting the use and manufacture of EVs. Under the FAME II scheme, the government is <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/corporate/government-tightens-localisation-norms-for-electric-vehicles/68294648">offering</a> direct subsidies of upto ₹88 billion to consumers who are adopting EVs. However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has a few speed bumps. Another challenge is the high electricity tariff. Ola’s report states, “Although the cost of electricity shrunk significantly post the implementation of special EV tariff in October 2018, the tariff continues to be unfavorable for TCO (Total Cost Opportunity) economics to work.” With drivers too having had little or no exposure to electric vehicles, it is another task when it comes to the adoption of EVs. In fact, Ola’s initial plan of electric mobility in Nagpur also faced trouble when drivers started reportedly returning the vehicles.
