The <keyword id="198310" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thoothukudi">Thoothukudi</keyword> constituency saw <keyword id="6357766" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="dmk">DMK</keyword>’s star candidate <keyword id="131867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanimozhi">Kanimozhi</keyword> win it big. Kanimozhi, a two-time Rajya Sabha MP, is the daughter of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and the half-sister of DMK’s MK Stalin. She won with a 56.8% vote share. The constituency is home to the controversial <keyword id="45465" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sterlite">Sterlite</keyword> power plant. The Sterlite Copper plant came under the scanner last year, after violent protests broke out in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin against the plant’s reported adverse impact on pollution. The TNPCB had then ordered for the plant to be shut permanently, citing a provision of the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/sterlite-plant-tuticorin-vedanta-supreme-court-tamil-nadu-5588840/">Water Act, 1974</a>. In May 2018, in a police firing, 13 people were killed and now, the Supreme Court has ordered the CBI to conduct a fair and impartial investigation regarding the firing, according to ANI. The Supreme Court in February had ordered that the controversial Sterlite Copper plant owned by Vedanta Private Limited in Tamil Nadu will remain <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/supreme-court-refuses-to-allow-reopening-of-sterlite-plant/articleshow/68043399.cms">shut</a>, overturning an earlier order with the country’s main environmental court. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress have an alliance in the state. Congress and their coalition partner, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is expected to sweep the state, winning over 25 seats, as predicted by exit polls. Today’s Chanakya and India Today and India Today-Axis’ polls foretold that they will cross 30 seats. BJP’s poll partner, on the other hand, AIADMK (All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), might find it tough to win more than ten seats, according to most polls.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharam announced allocation of ₹3150 crore for Ministry of Culture and proposes the establishment of <keyword id="8696744" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-heritage">Indian Institute of Heritage</keyword> and Conservation under the ministry. “Five archaeological sites in Haryana, UP, Assam, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, to be developed with on-site museums, to be developed with on-site museums,” says finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It was also a part of matured Indus-valley civilization. The site was recently in the news for the scientific paper on the DNA analysis of the Harappan skeleton. </li><li>Sivasagar in Assam gets its name from the big lake Sivasagar. The lake was commissioned by the Ahom king Siva Singha and lies in an area of about 360 kilometres. </li></ul>However, the list missed out two important archaeological cultural sites RoopKund in Uttarakhand and Keeladi in Madurai. The Financial minister also said a tribal museum will be set up in Ranchi, Jharkhand and a Maritime site will be set up in Lothal, Gujarat. Budget 2020 allocates a unique part of budget to Ministry of Culture for Archaeological sites

New Delhi, Apr 17 () Sterlite Copper on Friday said it has contributed Rs 5 crore towards Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund in the battle against COVID-19.Besides, the employees of Sterlite Copper have voluntarily donated their one-day salary to support health and sanitation workers in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, the company said in a statement."At a time when COVID-19 cases are steadily on the rise, various individuals and companies have responded by pooling their resources to help control the pandemic...the employees of Sterlite Copper have voluntarily donated their one-day's salary....Their combined efforts have helped raise a total amount of Rs 15 lakh," the statement said.On the ground, the company has tied up with 10 Self Help Groups (SHGs)comprising 150 members to manufacture and distribute masks and personal hygiene items across 20 villages in Thoothukudi, towards implementing proactive safeguards against the virus. Already, about 30,000 masks--out of a target of 50,000--have been distributed to 5,200 households in the district, and also to truck drivers operating in that area. In addition, 1,300 litres of liquid handwash, 13,000 bars of soap and 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizer have been provided to them as well.Sterlite Copper has also distributed 200 sets of personal protective equipments (PPEs) for the use of frontline health workers at the Tuticorin Medical College Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. The company is now in the process of securing an additional 200 sets of PPEs.Further, disinfectants such as sodium hypochlorite and bleaching powder along with appropriate disinfecting tools have been distributed across villages, positively impacting around 2 lakh people through pre-emptive actions."Battling the COVID-19 virus will require a coordinated effort from all sections of society, as it is something that affects all of us. COVID-19: Sterlite Copper contributes Rs 5 cr towards Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund

New Delhi, Nov 28 () The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide USD 451 million loan to strengthen power connectivity between the southern and northern parts of the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC), the multilateral agency said in a statement.
 CKIC is part of the East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC), in Tamil Nadu. ADB is the lead partner of the Government of India for developing ECEC.
 An agreement regarding the loan has been signed between ADB and the central government.
 The project will help establish extra-high-voltage transmission link between Virudhunagar and Coimbatore to transfer the additional generation capacity of 9,000 megawatts (MW), including 6,000 MW from renewables, by 2025 to meet the increased power demand in the CKIC.
 "This will help reliably evacuate power from these new power plants in the southern CKIC," ADB said.
 The project will also build the operational capacity of TANTRANSCO, the state-owned company responsible for transmission, by supporting a financial restructuring plan, better facilities and work environment for women workers, and improved monitoring system for social and environmental impacts.
 To support this end, ADB has approved a complementary technical assistance grant of USD 650,000.
 The state is aiming to develop the northern Chennai-Tiruchirappalli area of CKIC as a manufacturing centre while targeting the relatively poor southern Madurai-Thoothukudi portion for the development of renewable energy-based power generation. NKD HRS

Mumbai, Apr 18 () Sterlite Copper, a Vedanta Group entity, on Saturday said it has contributed Rs 5 crore to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Vedanta has already provided Rs 101 crore to the PM-CARES Fund and has set up a Rs 100-crore corpus for daily workers, preventive healthcare and welfare of employees and contract partners across the country, the company said in a release. "We have 1 lakh people working at Vedanta and each of them, along with their family members, are empowered to do whatever it takes to help people in distress. We are facing multiple problems but it's the country that comes first," Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal said. The employees of Sterlite Copper along with group businesses have contributed their one day's salary for local communities. Sterlite Copper has already teamed up with 10 self-help group (SHG) partners, comprising 150 members, to manufacture and distribute masks and personal hygiene items across 20 villages in Thoothukudi, providing the local communities with preventive safeguards against the virus. It has so far distributed around 30,000 masks to 5,200 households and truck drivers in the district and is planning to distribute another 20,000 masks over the next few weeks. As part of its ongoing community outreach programme, the company has provided around 1,300 litres of liquid handwash, 13,000 soap bars and 1,000 bottles of hand sanitiser to people in the district. Sterlite Copper has distributed 200 sets of personal protective equipment (PPEs) for frontline health workers at the Tuticorin Medical College Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. The company is in the process of securing an additional 200 sets of PPEs for use by the healthcare personnel.
