The lights dim, with only the light from the film projector behind her, before she says the instantly quotable (and memeable), "Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this."</p><p>The original ad debuted <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiEeIxZJ9x0">almost exactly one year ago</a>, and its writer, Billy Ray, says that he's already written a sequel.</p><p>"I got a text from the chairman of AMC about a month ago asking me if I would write the next one, and of course the answer to that is yes," Ray told <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/08/nicole-kidmans-amazing-amc-ad-is-getting-a-sequel">Vanity Fair</a>. "It's already written."</p><p>An AMC spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KiEeIxZJ9x0" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>A follow-up commercial was expected after AMC announced last month that it had renewed Kidman's contract for another year, though it's unclear when the new one will debut.</p><p>"All I can tell you about it is we are not dumb enough to fly in the face of the one we've already done and try to top it," Ray said. "So it's a very, very different approach that is a little bit of a wink to the one we've already done."</p><p>The original ad quickly became an internet meme, and has since gained somewhat of a cult following, particularly the "heartbreak" line. There are plenty of shirts that quote it for sale on Etsy, for instance.</p><p>Kidman was shocked to learn how viral it had become in an interview with <a href="https://theplaylist.net/nicole-kidman-talks-being-the-ricardos-interview-20220114/">The Playlist</a> in January.</p><p>"It's a great line, right?," Kidman said. "I mean, talk about not feeling alone, sitting in a cinema with a broken heart, and then watching something that breaks your heart again, and you go, 'I'm not alone.' Please. This must not go away. We have to have cinema."</p><p>The news of a follow-up ad comes as movie theaters enter a slow period after a promising summer. Nicole Kidman's viral AMC Theatres ad, which turned into an internet punchline, is getting a sequel that will be 'very different' and 'wink' at the original

<ul><li>IMAX currently has 22 theatres in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Delhi. </li><li>India being one of the most important markets for its market size and social media presence, IMAX is now upping its game by launching newer technologies and expanding its reach further into Tier II and III cities. </li><li>As IMAX deploys its Laser Technology in India with PVR, we speak to John Schreiner, Senior VP - Theatre Development, about its logistics, marketing plan, vision for expansion, and growth trajectory.</li><li>IMAX has already installed two laser systems in Mumbai and Delhi last year. </li></ul>IMAX has nearly tripled its theatre network in India over the last three years, making it apparent how critical the Indian market for the company is, globally. Expanding its network further in the country and upping its quality, IMAX has partnered with PVR Cinema to deploy its laser technology in Forum Mall, Bangalore and Palazzo Mall, Chennai later this year. <br /><br />IMAX brought in laser technology into the country at the end of last year, which uses dual 4K projectors, 12-channel sound and a laser light source instead of a prism. It delivers a higher resolution output, with sharper and brighter images, and maintains a deeper contrast. <br /><br />IMAX entered into a strategic partnership with PVR back in 2011 to launch its first theatre in Bangalore. Today, it has 22 theatres, 20 operational and two that are just an approval away. The next phase of expansion for IMAX will be in Tier II and III cities. <br /><br />Telling us how important the Indian market is for IMAX globally, John Schreiner, Senior VP - Theatre Development, said, “India is such an avid movie-going market and consumers love great experiences. Therefore, our theatres have been very successful here, it is a strategic market for us and we hope to grow that number quite dramatically. We continuously work towards finding the right ingredients to bring IMAX -- not only to the major metros, but to the second and third Tier markets. We know there are a lot of fans in these markets who want that experience because they interact with us on social media. India is one of the most active markets for us globally, in terms of social media engagement.”<br /><br />For IMAX, Russia is the largest market, with 42 theatres. However, population-wise, India is a larger market than Russia and Schreiner says there is a huge room for growth here and it is hoping to case its net wider in the coming years. <br /><br /><strong>Marketing Strategy<br /></strong><br />Interestingly, IMAX’s Executive Vice President, Global Brand &amp; Creative, Denny Tu used to work with Sky TV in the UK, making sure people stay at home and watch content on their smaller screens. Now at IMAX, he encourages the same audience to come out for pop-corn crunching, and jump-out-of-your-seat experience, which is what every filmmaker originally desired for. <br /><br />Sharing how IMAX gets consumers to step out of the ‘Netflix and Chill’ zone, Schreiner said, “We have launched a whole new brand strategy and campaign, which helps produce assets that encourage consumers to come out for content and experience it in the best way possible. That is also getting translated here in India. We, as a company, are highly regarded in India and we will continue to interact with our Indian fans on social media, this will help us create more successful theatres in India. Apart from that, we will be bringing more local content on IMAX screens, this is our holistic approach to growth here.” <br /><br /><strong>Growth of OTT a threat? </strong><br /><br />The window between theatrical release and television premieres is decreasing, which is threatening the theatre businesses world over. However, Schreiner says this is the best time to be working with IMAX because content production has reached its tipping point. <br /><br />IMAX stands for higher quality and an immersive experience, whose network is only going to grow from here, believes Schreiner. “The window is decreasing and the pressure from various stakeholders is increasing but we view that as an opportunity because you can’t experience IMAX anywhere else. Studios are making grander spectacles for movie releases and we do well with that.”<br /><br />IMAX has also partnered with a few streaming platforms such as Apple for ‘Beastie Boys’ documentary. Schreiner says they will continue to experiment and bring newer content for its audience -- to expand its base. <br /><br />“This is the golden age of content production -- with all the studios and streaming houses, there hasn’t been so much content produced globally before than today. There is an opportunity for IMAX to take advantage of that and that is going to be a driving element for our future growth,” adds Schreiner. <br /><br />Globally, its mantra is to enhance customer experience. It is present in 82 countries and has 1700 theatres around the world. <br /><br /><strong>Annual Performance</strong><br /><br />In the first half of 2019, IMAX theatres generated more than $7.76 million at the box office in India, up by 18% over the first half of 2018. The economic slow-down did not affect the company in India and even globally, it was a pink season for IMAX. In fact, Schrenier says that economic slowdown brings an uptick in consumer sentiment for the cinema industry. <br /><br />“Last year the performance of IMAX across the world was record-breaking. We had billion dollars in the box office, across all our networks. And in India, not only IMAX, but the cinema industry was strong and resilient as well. We have noticed this globally, whenever there is an economic slowdown, affordable luxuries tend to be very resilient because consumers may not go and buy a TV or a car, but they will take their family or partners to watch a movie,” says Schreiner.<br /><br />Schrenier has been a part of IMAX for 19 years now but the content industry is constantly evolving, which makes him feel like ‘he has worked with three different companies.’ He joined IMAX when it was selling film projectors to museums and educational institutions. Then they added Hollywood movies and transitioned to digital projection from films. Shrenier believes that the industry is about to enter another transition phase and he feels excited to be a part of it, and witness it change every day. <br /><br />Going forward, Schrenier will help IMAX focus on taking advantage of the golden age of content production, invest in newer technologies to enhance customer experience, and while they are at it, help all of its partners flourish together. <br />

They're also big media events.</li><li>Each campaign sent politicians to Philadelphia to argue on behalf of Harris and Trump.</li></ul><p>Tuesday's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-donald-trump-presidential-debate-takeaways-2024-9">presidential debate</a> was still more than 90 minutes away when I noticed a swelling gaggle, the first I'd seen since arriving at Pennsylvania Convention Center that afternoon. It wasn't immediately clear who sat in the eye of this hurricane of 40-odd reporters and a half-dozen TV cameras. Still carrying the chicken sandwich I'd picked up for dinner, I squeezed my way forward. It was Gov. Doug Burgum.</p><p>The mild-mannered North Dakotan, an also-ran in this year's GOP primaries and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-vice-president-nominee-candidates-2024-1">finalist to be former President Donald Trump's running mate</a>, had been reduced by the circumstances of the evening to something far less than a two-term governor and successful businessman: An amateur political pundit. The price, perhaps, of keeping oneself in the mix for a Cabinet job.</p><p>Burgum, of course, played his part. Vice President Kamala Harris, he said, was a "dangerously progressive liberal from California." Burgum wanted to know if she would be "asked the tough questions about her positions." It's not just Trump who's liable to come across as pugnacious, Burgum told reporters, noting that Harris is a former prosecutor. "Either one of them could be viewed as being too aggressive," he reassured the crowd. I quickly got bored and elbowed my way back out of the miniature media mosh pit.</p><div type="image" title="Burgum taking questions ahead of the debate." height="1500" width="2000" msid="113270468" hostid="261" sizebytes="95086"></div><p>This is what it's really like to be in the "spin room," the anachronistic institution that — aside from 2020, for obvious, COVID-related reasons — has existed as a parasitic outgrowth of America's quadrennial presidential debates since Ronald Reagan's 1984 reelection campaign. Each campaign trots out a variety of surrogates, the bulk of which are high-profile governors and members of Congress, to proffer talking points to reporters before and after the debate.</p><p>It's a cheap production as far as political theatre goes, despite the considerable resources invested by both campaigns and media organizations.</p><div type="image" title="Reporters in the cavernous &quot;spin room&quot; at the Pennsylvania Convention Center." height="1500" width="2000" msid="113270466" hostid="261" sizebytes="270810"></div><p>Tuesday night's debate, though also an instance of political theatre, was highly consequential. It was Harris and Trump's only scheduled face-off, though the vice president has since asked for another. But the spin room wasn't anywhere near the debate hall at the National Constitution Center. In fact, we were six blocks away.</p><p>The media center, set in a cavernous convention center hall the size of a football field, could have been anywhere. Six giant projector screens displayed ABC News' debate stream, while dozens of rows of tables and chairs held the roughly 1,000 reporters who had shown up for the ritual. Along the edges of the room, TV anchors and correspondents illuminated by ring lights spoke into their cameras. Crowds of reporters followed surrogates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Gov. Josh Shapiro around the room like schools of fish. If the goal is to cover the debate in real time, you're better off staying at home. The room was over-air conditioned and prone to echoes. I couldn't connect to the complimentary Wifi. The "swag" was fine — a tote bag, a key chain, and a water bottle.</p><div type="image" title="Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania finishing an interview with CNN in the spin room." height="1500" width="2000" msid="113270470" hostid="261" sizebytes="142786"></div><p>More importantly, it's probably the only scenario in which you could place six governors, nine senators, roughly a dozen House members, and a host of other political celebrities before hundreds of reporters in the same room, and still somehow manage to generate almost no newsworthy information.</p><p>That's largely because, as media critics have <a target="_blank" href="http://archive.pressthink.org/2003/11/22/spin_alley.html">strenuously argued</a> for decades, it's an environment where candor and honesty are in short supply. There's a message to deliver, there's a victory to declare, and the events of the debate itself often have a strikingly limited bearing on what any surrogate says. Before the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/2012-presidential-debates-spin-room_n_1929185">onset of Twitter</a> (now known as X), one could still argue that that the spin room played an important role within our conflict-driven media ecosystem: In such an environment, it's crucial to get each campaign's perspective, and there's no better way to do that than putting everyone in one place.</p><p>But these days, there's a zombie-like quality to it. You're here because everyone else is here, and this is how we've run debates since 1984. We're going through the motions. If you're a reporter looking to "get the perspective" of a campaign, just check your email inbox. Over the course of Tuesday's debate, I received 16 "fact check" emails from the Trump campaign, eight such emails from the Harris campaign, and dozens more from members of Congress and downballot candidates congratulating Harris and Trump on their respective "wins."</p><p>"I mean, it's a media construct," Rep. Robert Garcia told me ahead of the debate. <em>Don't blame me for participating in the game you all have set up</em>, in other words. This was the media-friendly California Democrat's second time spinning for the top of the ticket this year. In June, he was part of the team that was forced to explain away President Joe Biden's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-biden-trump-debate-takeaways-2024-6">debate performance</a>, indisputably the worst in American history. Tonight, his job would undoubtedly be easier, but I wondered: Was he prepared to declare Harris the victor, no matter what happened? "What I'm going to say is the truth, which is that she's going to perform great tonight, because she always does," Garcia said. "I have like, zero doubt."</p><div type="image" title="Rep. Robert Garcia in the spin room." height="1500" width="2000" msid="113270471" hostid="261" sizebytes="123788"></div><p>Few reporters are dense enough to outright ask surrogates "who won the debate" or "who's going to win the debate." And most of us understand that the spin room is a manifestation of the unholy mixture of news and entertainment that's often inescapable as a national reporter. Surrogate interviews are largely built around the spinning of particular moments or themes from the debate. Did Trump come across as too frustrated and angry? "Well, the American people are frustrated and angry," Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida explained. Did Trump too easily take Harris' bait? "He did some things that were a little unconventional, but I think that's what makes Donald Trump such a compelling figure," Vivek Ramaswamy explained. The only notable point of candor to emerge from Tuesday night was from Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thebulwark.com/p/inside-trump-spin-room-from-hell-presidential-debate">reportedly</a> called for the firing of Trump's debate team and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/11/lindsey-graham-trump-debate-00178592">described the affair</a> as a "missed opportunity."</p><p>That's not to say it isn't a fun time for those involved. It became clear to me after a while that that's why we're all still here, despite the aforementioned vacuousness and obsolescence of it all. If you care what Anthony Scaramucci has to say about anything, as the Harris campaign apparently thinks you might, then he's on hand. Remember Khizr Khan, the Gold Star father from the Democratic convention eight years ago? Here's there too. And where else can one use the urinal beside a 2024 GOP presidential candidate, as I unwittingly did with Ramaswamy?</p><p>The set-up also laid bare the power imbalance between Republican politicians and right-wing media. As Trump spoke with Fox News' Sean Hannity, Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of South Carolina, along with Ramaswamy, stood patiently off to the side, waiting their turn to hit the airwaves.</p><div type="image" title="Trump speaking to reporters in the spin room." height="1500" width="2000" msid="113270473" hostid="261" sizebytes="171238"></div><p>Ultimately, the most "newsworthy" thing that took place in the spin room was Trump's surprise arrival, which triggered something of a stampede of reporters toward the cordoned-off bubble erected around him. Conventional wisdom would tell you that his decision to show up is a sign that he lost the debate — why bother to spin if you won?</p><p>But even the former president, larger-than-life as he is, was often drowned out by the overlapping screams of the hundreds of reporters hoping to get his attention, and the only noteworthy tidbit he offered was a noncommittal answer on whether he would agree to another debate.</p><p>"They want a second debate because they lost," he told reporters before claiming the moderators were working against him. "It was obviously three on one."</p>

Mercedes, Honda, BMW and others showcase some exciting car tech at the CES 2023 — these are our favorites

But for Lee's latest movie, "Gemini Man" (in theaters Friday), he made it at the extremely sharp and ultra-realistic high frame rate of 120 frames per second. He also shot it digitally and for 3D.</p><p>That might sound great for the viewer, but collectively, those elements cause a major challenge. <a href="https://www.polygon.com/2019/10/8/20896194/gemini-man-hfr-3d-120-fps-showtimes-movie-theaters">In fact, not a single theater in the US</a> can play "Gemini Man" the way Lee wants it seen: 120 fps, on a high-resolution 4K projector, in 3D.</p><p>This <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billy-lynns-long-halftime-walk-format-2016-8">isn't the first time</a> Lee has been in this situation. One source at a chain showing "Gemini Man" at a high frame rate this weekend told Business Insider the projectionist has had to deal with the movie crashing while doing tests.</p><p>Russell Vannorsdel, vice president of Iowa-based chain Fridley Theatres, said issues testing the 60 fps version his chain will show this weekend were minimal. But he could only imagine how hard showing "Gemini Man" the way Lee intended would be. </p><p>"When you're talking full-blown 120 fps, 4K, 3D, that's a really big piece of content file and playback is challenging in those circumstances as well as storage," Vannorsdel told Business Insider. "But all those things are capable of being overcome assuming that there is an appetite for this type of format in watching movies."</p><p>Remember how the popularity of James Cameron's "Avatar" made movies in 3D popular again? The same needs to be done with high frame rate. And despite Lee making his high frame rate follow-up an action movie starring Will Smith on the run from a younger version of himself, "Gemini Man" is suffering from bad reviews (<a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gemini_man_2019/">28% on Rotten Tomatoes</a>), and isn't even expected to dethrone "Joker" from the top of the box office this weekend.</p><p>"It's always tough to have a technological advancement become a box-office draw," the Comscore senior <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Business Insider. "Theater owners want movies that are going to make box office. I don't think anyone bases their moviegoing decision on any particular technology. It's the movie that gets them in. It's still, 'What is the movie about?'"</p><p>But Lee may finally get some help in his quest. James Cameron has said <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/james-cameron-fully-intends-make-172916">as far back as 2011</a> that he plans to make the "Avatar" sequels in a high frame rate. 'Gemini Man' was made in such a technically advanced way that zero movie theaters in the US can show it as intended

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On Wednesday, popular movie chain <keyword id="4597210" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="alamo-drafthouse">Alamo Drafthouse</keyword> announced its reopening plan.</li><li>In a blog post written by founder and executive chairman Tim League, which Insider obtained in advance, League stated that all staff and guests will be required to wear masks.</li><li>Ticket and food orders will be made in advance, and in some instances, guest will be temperature checked.</li><li>League did not state and official reopening of all 42 Alamo Drafthouse locations, but did note that in early July 2 theaters will open as "learning labs."</li><li>Several sources told Insider that one of those locations will likely be in Austin, Texas.</li><li>The sources also told Insider that locations in bigger cities, like Brooklyn and Los Angeles, will not reopen for some time.</li></ul><p>On Wednesday, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, the popular Austin-based movie theater chain in Texas with 42 locations across the country, announced its reopening plan in the wake of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic.</p><p>In a <a href="https://drafthouse.com/news/how-were-reopening-alamo-drafthouse">blog post put on the Alamo website</a> written by founder and executive chairman Tim League, which Insider received in advance, League laid out the chain's strategy which will include staff and moviegoers being required to wear masks and all food orders to be made in advance.</p><p>League also said that though all staff will be temperature checked daily, at times even guests will be temperature checked.</p><p>"We want you to feel safe," League wrote. "Our driving principle has been to make the Alamo Drafthouse experience one of the safest possible indoor activities — 'safer than a supermarket' — and far exceed the expectations you already have for supermarkets, gyms, and restaurants. We intend to make it so that you can leave your car, make it to your seat, enjoy your food and drinks, and be able to leave having never come within six feet of another person other than when your order is delivered, and having never touched a surface other than your chair and table — both of which will be sanitized between screenings with an electrostatic fogger and disinfectant."</p><p>League did not give an exact date when all the locations will be open, but he did note that in early July two locations will be reopened as "learning labs." One of those locations will likely be one of its Austin theaters, several sources with knowledge of the plan have told Insider.</p><p>The sources also noted to Insider that Alamo's locations in bigger cities — specifically Brooklyn and Los Angeles — will likely not open for some time.</p><p><strong>Here's what to expect when you go to Alamo Drafthouse going forward:</strong></p><ul><li>All ticketing will be handled online.</li><li>Two-seat buffer in theaters to provide at least six feet of social distancing.</li><li>Guests will be required to wear masks at all times, except when eating and drinking. Masks will be provided if you don't have one.</li><li>Interaction with staff will be minimized with ticketing and food orders done online in advance of showing up to the theater.</li><li>All chairs and tables in the theaters will be cleaned with an electrostatic fogger and disinfectant.</li><li>Hand wipes will be at all tables in the theater.</li><li>All staff will have their temperature taken prior to starting work and at times guests will also be checked.</li><li>Staff will wear masks and gloves, changing their gloves regularly and washing their hands at least every 30 minutes.</li></ul><p>All movie theater chains are gradually trying to reopen since the pandemic. Alamo Drafthouse reveals its reopening plan will include mandatory masks and some temperature checks for guests

<p><span>It was like a super early version of the film projector. A string of photographs would flash across a peephole, where folks could view a moving image.</span></p>
<p>As National Geographic <a href="http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/06/18/where-do-new-ideas-come-from/" target="_blank">notes</a>, Edison was tipped to the idea from the British photographer <span>Eadweard Muybridge. Muybridge made images like the below gif, which clued Edison to the fact that motion could be conveyed through a series of photos. </span></p>

<p>After seeing this, Edison - who'd already made recorded history with the phonograph - decided he needed to get into the motion picture game. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The inventor </span><a href="http://www.nps.gov/edis/forkids/motion-pictures.htm" target="_blank">wrote</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">: </span></p>

<p>We can learn a couple of things from Edison's analogizing.</p>
<p>First, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/learning-hacks-that-will-maximize-your-memory-2014-6/#.U7GC1I1dWZE">cognitive scientists have confirmed </a>that it's easier to learn new things when you already have an extensive base of knowledge. Second, the bridge that allows us to come up with new ideas is <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3032418/the-future-of-work/the-science-of-brainstorming" target="_blank">usually an analogy</a>: a way of looking at two things in your memory or in the world and seeing the similarity in their underlying structures. </p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Analogy may be the </span><a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3032418/the-future-of-work/the-science-of-brainstorming" target="_blank">best way to brainstorm new ideas </a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">- and it's a ridiculously old technique. <span>Frequently, the "answer" to a new question exists in a solution somewhere out there in the world. It's just a matter of finding the right fit.</span></span></p>
<p><a href="http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/06/18/where-do-new-ideas-come-from/" target="_blank">Nat Geo tips us</a> to the first recorded invention by analogy. Some 2000 years ago, the Roman architect-engineer Vitruvius used an analogy to figure out how to build an excellent theatre. </p>
<p><span>"As in the case of the waves formed in the water, so it is in the case of the voice," </span><a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=8ZRHYv59154C&amp;pg=PA9&amp;source=gbs_toc_r&amp;cad=3#v=onepage&amp;q=voice%2520is%2520a%2520flowing&amp;f=false" target="_blank">the architect wrote</a><span>. "The first wave, when there is no obstruction to interrupt it, does not break up the second or the following waves, but they all reach the ears of the lowest and highest spectators without an echo."</span></p>
<p>Analogy helped Johannes Kepler untangle the laws of planetary motion. The German astronomer thought that gravity - though it didn't have a name yet - could act like light. Just like light could move from the sun to the planets, a force could keep them in orbit. </p>
<p>Modern-day office folk can employ analogies, too. </p>
<h3>How to analogize your way to better ideas</h3>
<p>In a new paper, University of Pittsburgh researchers Joel Chan and Christian Schunn <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3032418/the-future-of-work/the-science-of-brainstorming" target="_blank">tracked the brainstorming sessions of a design firm</a> trying to make a handheld printer for kids. The designers made new analogies every five minutes. Those analogies allowed the designers to incrementally improve on each other's conceptions. </p>
<p>Let's look <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1J84EpLdwM4Nl96LVh2cV94MEE/edit" target="_blank">at the transcript</a>. In this particular selection, they're trying to figure out how to cover the printer head so it doesn't get destroyed by kids when it's not in use. Notice the progression of the idea, analogy by analogy: </p>

<p>Incrementally, the idea shifts, recomposes, and evolves. The solution is first like a video tape, then a garage door, and then a rolling garage door.</p>
<p>You can get a feeling of what's going on in the designers' minds: They're looking for a new solution to an old problem, how to protect this valuable thing when it's not in use. So they fire off ideas of other types of protectors in a rapid evolution.</p>
<p>In 10 seconds, analogies help the idea to evolve. </p>
<p>So remember this the next time you're trying to dream up an answer: Look for other "solutions" that already exist out there in the world, and see if they might fit your question, just like Edison, <span>Vitruvius, and Kepler. </span></p>

<p>CinemaCon is the largest annual gathering of cinema owners and operators from around the world, drawing filmmakers, distributors and exhibitors alike for a four-day celebration of the theaters and films we love.</p>
<p>We'll be celebrating CinemaCon this week by highlighting theaters and the films that'll be filling them this coming summer. We start today by looking at five unique, technically advanced or just down right gorgeous theaters in America.</p>
<p>These are the places that remind you why there is simply no substitute for seeing a film in a theater; whether it's mind-blowing technology, an unbeatable environment, or the joy of watching a film with hundreds of fellow movie lovers (or a combination of all three), here's a brief look at some fantastic places to take in a movie.</p>
<p><strong>1. The Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater, San Jose, California</strong></p>

<p>Minneapolis has long been a unostentatious Mecca for fantastic art, and the Landmark Uptown Theater fits right into a city that includes the world renown contemporary art center the Walker among its jewels.</p>
<p>Located in the middle of the city's Uptown District, the historic Uptown Theater (originally built as the Lagoon Theater in 1916, which eventually burned down) had a long stint as a repertory theater, eventually becoming a world class art film theater in 1985.</p>

<p>It's not surprising that the AFI Silver Theater is a technical marvel, considering its mandate is "seeing the screen itself as a source of literacy, learning and vision for the future." The exceptional technical facilities that define the AFI Silver include film formats from 16 to 70mm, high-definition digital cinema video projection, and broadcast quality video recording. The historic Silver theater was saved from destruction by a partnership between Montgomery Country, Maryland and the American Film Institute.</p>
<p>Due to its namesake institute, the theater also includes distance learning capabilities via satellite, fiber and the Internet, as well as a moving image exhibition and cultural center. "Whether it's silent film at the proper frame rate with live musical accompaniment, 70mm wide screen spectaculars or digital cinema, the AFI Silver offers state-of-the-art technology in each of its three theatres - with seating for 400, 200 and 75, respectively," their website states. 5 Of The Most Awesome Movie Theaters In America

<p><span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">THE buildings on the studio lot of <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> <keyword id="681" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="film">Film</keyword> Group, a vast government-owned company, are grey, windowless and identical. The air, even 20km outside Beijing, is heavy with pollution. Inside, Jiang Wen is filming his newest movie, "Gone with the Bullets", about a dance competition in 1920s Shanghai. He is standing on a stage with sequined dancers. Around 400 extras in black tie look on from a Gaudiesque theatre, built for the shoot. Mr Jiang, in a grey T-shirt and 3D glasses, scurries up and down the stage giving directions. Mr Jiang has been known to hold up a white board with "Sexy" written in red marker pen, and show the dancers how it should be done. Cameras swivel around the dancers, capturing their gyrations and the audience's reaction.</span></p>
<p>Mr Jiang, an actor as well as a director, is one of the stars of China's film business. His 2010 movie, "Let the Bullets Fly", attempted to invent a new genre: the Chinese Western. It was about a bandit who poses as the mayor of a remote Chinese town. The government did not appreciate its portrayal of an illegitimate leader gulling the masses, but the film was wildly popular. If everything goes smoothly "Gone with the Bullets", which is being shot in 3D, will open in theatres in China and around the world by the end of 2014. In terms of cost, the film is pushing the boundaries. It has a budget of around $50m, a princely sum by Chinese movie-making standards. A Broadway choreographer and American dancers have been brought in. On stage right near the dressing rooms, Keith Collea, an American 3D expert, sits in the dark watching his screens. "China is where it's at," he says.</p>
<p>Last year China overtook Japan to become the second-largest film market after America, with box-office receipts of around 17 billion yuan ($2.8 billion). Some people think it will be the world's biggest in five years' time. Young people, flush with cash, are eager to get out of the house. Films have become central to Chinese courtship and consumption. Enormous IMAX screens and 3D films are the rage, and in big cities carry a similar ticket price to America. Screens are flickering on around the country. More than ten a day were erected in 2012; today there are around 18,000, more than four times the number five years ago. "Journey to the West", an adventure film released in 2013, has grossed more than 1.2 billion yuan ($205m).</p>
<p>Most Chinese movies lose money: only around a quarter make it into theatres, and piracy means there is no legitimate DVD market. But then many films in Hollywood and elsewhere are unprofitable these days: according to a report by the British Film Institute earlier this month, only 7% of British films turn a profit. Chinese people like films and they like to gamble, so money is racing into the movie business. In September, for instance, Wang Jianlin, China's richest man, announced he would build the world's largest film-studio complex, for an estimated $8.2 billion, in Qingdao.</p>
<p>Hollywood is also trying to push in. Only 34 big-budget films, and a handful of independent foreign ones, are allowed into China each year, and foreign producers are allowed to keep only a small share--usually less than 25%--of box-office revenues. Even so, foreigners are desperate to get their product into China. Sometimes films are specially adapted for the market: four extra minutes of footage, featuring Chinese actors, were added to the Chinese version of "Iron Man 3", made by Disney's Marvel.</p>
<p>To gain a foothold in China, Hollywood studios are helping finance films or co-producing them. Mr Jiang's "Gone with the Bullets" has backing from Sony, a Hollywood studio; DreamWorks, which made cartoon hits like "Shrek", has set up Oriental Dreamworks, a joint venture with Shanghai Media Group, a state-owned studio, and two other firms, to make animated films for the Chinese market. There are risks to working in China as Relativity Media, a Hollywood studio, discovered in 2011. It got flak from the Western press for shooting a movie in Linyi, an ambitious city in Shandong province, when Chen Guangcheng, a well-known human-rights activist, was being held under house arrest in the city. But the lure of the Chinese market tends to outweigh reputational risk, and Relativity is financing a new film located in the city of Linyi (see box).</p>
<p>American influence in China's film business is nothing new. "Everything we learned, we learned from Hollywood," says Yu Dong, the boss of Bona Film Group, one of China's largest independent studios. In some ways China's movie industry resembles 1930s Hollywood, when studios controlled all business lines--from talent to production to theatres--before a 1948 Supreme Court ruling forced them to divest. In China, this is called "being a dragon from head to tail". Huayi Brothers, one of China's largest studios, whose name evokes the fraternal Warners, oversees actors, production, distribution and cinemas.</p>
<p>Yet the differences are more obvious than the similarities. China's film industry lacks Hollywood's technical sophistication. Even costly Chinese movies often look amateurish. "I fell asleep," confesses a woman when the lights come on at a Beijing cineplex. She had left work a few minutes early to catch a late afternoon screening of "Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon" in 3D. During some scenes the special effects looked like a 1990s video game. The plot and dialogue were not much slicker.</p>
<p>China's movie business also lacks Tinseltown's glamour. Mr Yu's small office is on the 18th floor of a dingy Beijing tower block above a busy road. Smoke from his cigarettes fills the air; honks rise from the street below. There is no Hollywood-style party scene because stars tend to keep out of polluted Beijing. They treat club openings as work events and expect to get paid to turn up.</p>
<p>But the big difference is in the location of power. In America power lies with the studios; in China with the state. The government controls which films are made and has a hand in every aspect of the film business, from production to exhibition. China Film Group produces movies and distributes Hollywood and Chinese films. The government rewards independent producers for making films it approves of--Desen International Media, a production company, received a bonus of 3m yuan for "Full Circle", which promoted filial piety, for instance--and blocks Hollywood films during national holidays, to help Chinese ones.</p>
<p>Hollywood has always been the world's dream-maker, but China's government wants the country to make its own. A communiqué released after the Central Committee meeting of the Chinese Communist Party in 2011 announced that "it is a pressing task to increase the state's cultural soft power" and to "build our country into a socialist cultural superpower". When Shanghai Media Group signed its deal with DreamWorks last year, Xi Jinping, then vice-president and now president, attended the ceremony in Los Angeles.</p>
<p>The government has twin ambitions in fostering the film industry, one domestic and one global. At home, it wants people to see films that will inculcate Chinese values and culture. And it wants them to go voluntarily: the party used to force people to watch propaganda films, but even it saw that this was like winning an ice-skating medal after beating up the competition with a bat. Abroad, the government wants to spread a more attractive image of the country. Hosting the Olympics was one attempt at this; but film premieres can happen more often. Yet China punches well below its weight in the film world: it has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes only once, 20 years ago, for Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine"--which was banned in China at the time. The government wants to change that, and has recently helped organise events to showcase Chinese films in places as diverse as Fiji, Cambodia and New York.</p>
<p>As with the Olympics, the government does not feel comfortable leaving creative elements to chance. Except during the 1930s, when China had a thriving independent film industry centred in Shanghai and operating with relatively little interference, the political climate has defined and confined its films. Private studios were dissolved after the Japanese occupied Shanghai in 1937. When the Communist Party came to power in 1949, it recognised that movies could be useful. Government studios made films packed with peasants and propaganda, and wheeled mobile projectors to rural areas to ensure they reached millions. Tickets were given out at work, and everybody had to attend. Independent movies started again in the 1970s, and then sputtered along. Now a few independent studios operate within the constraints of a state-controlled system.</p>
<h3>If it's entertaining, cut it</h3>
<p>"The Chinese producer is the best producer in the world," claims Mr Yu. "He has to negotiate the Chinese government and the market." China does not have a sex-and-violence ratings system of the sort that operates in most of the rest of the world to protect children and young people, but films cannot be screened until they have been signed off by censors at the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. Film-makers must submit a draft of the script in advance of shooting, and later a final cut of the film. The censorship board, which has around three dozen members, objects to violence, sex, drugs and anything critical of the party, either explicitly or implicitly--in other words, every ingredient that might be used to fill seats. Success comes from predicting what censors will object to, and writing scripts in such a way that they do not. Overt political commentary is unacceptable; that is probably why so many films are set in the past.</p>
<p>Censors often ask for multiple script revisions before giving the go-ahead, and, after seeing the final cut, request that scenes be eliminated. Film-makers' reactions to these restrictions range from acceptance to outrage. Zhao Wei, a famous actress and the director of "So Young", a drama about college in the 1990s that came out this year, had to axe a masturbation scene. She considers herself lucky: movies can be held up for years. In April the China Film Directors' Guild honoured Feng Xiaogang, a director. In his acceptance speech he complained about the "torment" of censorship. Even when films have been given a green light, censors sometimes change their minds. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" was pulled from theatres after a few days.</p>
<p>While producers in Hollywood try to drum up as much interest as possible in their films, those in China keep them quiet, so as not to pique censors' interest or suspicion. Your correspondent visited the set of a movie that had gone through around 20 versions of the script before it was approved. The censors signed off on it only after a sympathetic communist hero was written in. A crew member confided that the censors were still going through the script, even though shooting had begun, and were trying to get the final, climactic scene eliminated. When some of the producers heard a journalist had been on set, they were horrified, lest the movie's name be printed.</p>
<p>Some say that the censors are loosening up a bit. A racy scene was cut from "So Young", for example, but several abortions were left in. "No Man's Land", a sinister thriller, was held up for more than two years because censors thought it was "too dark" and "too distant from real life". But after what are believed to be significant modifications, it was released in early December. "Hunger Games: Catching Fire"--this autumn's Hollywood blockbuster, in which a totalitarian regime sacrifices its young for the entertainment of the masses--was, to general astonishment, screened in Chinese cinemas. Popular online video sites, such as Youku, host original movies, called "microfilms", which are not subject to the same censorship process, but this is probably an oversight rather than progress.</p>
<p>The government uses subsidy as well as censorship to get the kind of films it wants made. It forks out increasing sums for propaganda films, which account for an estimated 10% of movies being made each year. "The Founding of a Republic", a 2009 film celebrating the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, was a glossy Hollywood-style epic featuring so many stars that some had to be cut out of the final version.</p>
<p>Yet for all its efforts, the government is not really getting what it wants from its film industry. Far from inculcating the masses with Chinese culture and values the party approves of, successful films are often adaptations of Hollywood hits. "Lost in Thailand", a comedy about male friends reminiscent of Hollywood's "The Hangover", did well last year, as did "Tiny Times", a film about four materialistic friends in Shanghai and their luxurious lifestyle, which has been described as a cross between "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Sex and the City" (without the sex). A saccharine tribute to materialism, "Tiny Times" did particularly well in smaller, less-developed "tier 3" and "tier 4" cities, whose citizens aspire to be rich and fashionable but want to watch characters that feel home-grown. Ann An of Desen International Media, one of the producers, says the film appealed to stressed, overworked audiences. "We provided a two-hour dream for them." A film-maker says the head of the censorship board has privately described the Chinese films being made today as "trashy".</p>
<p>Nor do Chinese movies travel well. "Lost in Thailand" grossed around $192m in China, but a mere $60,000 in America. Even audiences in Taiwan and Hong Kong do not have much interest in mainland films. The plots tend to be blunt and the acting melodramatic. "Flowers of War", a costly movie about the Nanjing Massacre starring a Hollywood actor, Christian Bale, was intended to go global. But it fell flat outside China and failed to win the awards or critical acclaim officials had been hoping for.</p>
<p>Too many films are both too foreign and too familiar for audiences abroad: "Finding Mr. Right", for instance, is a romantic comedy about a woman who goes to Seattle at the behest of her married lover to give birth to their baby, and finds love there. The story feels relevant and modern to Chinese audiences, but to foreign ones it has no surprises and too many echoes of "Sleepless in Seattle", a Hollywood classic.</p>
<p>A lighter touch by the censors might produce films that were more authentically Chinese and artistically interesting. It would also avoid embarrassing incidents. The Chinese film that has garnered most attention in the West lately is "A Touch of Sin" by Jia Zhangke--a gloomy art-house portrayal of modern China that won the award for best screenplay at Cannes this year. The government has banned it from cinemas and journalists from interviewing Mr Jia. More Westerners have probably seen reports of this in recent months than have watched a Chinese film.</p>
