It's a long-held take that may seem out of place amid the market's momentum, as the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest%3Futm_source%3Dmarkets&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">S&amp;P 500</a> continues to breach <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-sp500-record-highs-investors-finance-wall-street-2024-2?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">record highs in 2024.</a></p><p>But to the Hussman Investment Trust president, the extreme runup is driven by <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-outlook-1929-bear-market-overvalued-john-hussman-2024-5">investor impatience</a> and a fear of missing out — key ingredients for a coming correction. </p><p>"There are certain features of valuation, investor psychology, and price behavior that tend to emerge when the fear of missing out becomes particularly extreme and the focus of speculation becomes particularly narrow. Last Friday, we hit a fresh 'motherlode' of these conditions," he wrote on Tuesday.</p><p>He said a combination of red-flag factors include overextended valuations, divergence among individual stock sectors, and lopsided sentiment. Another point of caution is the growing group of stocks hitting fresh 52-week lows, even as indexes themselves skyrocket.</p><p>"I continue to view the market advance of recent months as an attempt to 'grasp the suds of yesterday's bubble' rather than a new, durable bull market advance," he said. "I also believe that the S&amp;P 500 could lose something on the order of 50-70% over the completion of this cycle, simply to bring long-term expected returns to run-of-the-mill norms that investors associate with stocks."</p><p>Hussman is one of the most bearish forecasters on Wall Street, and has for months repeated his view that stocks could fall more than 60%. </p><p>Most strategists at major Wall Street banks, meanwhile, generally see the S&amp;P staying <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-sp500-target-earnings-growth-recession-risk-2024-5?_gl=1*1bl0q0r*_ga*MTMxNDIwNDI1Ni4xNjc1Njg3OTU4*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcxNjk4NzUxMy4yNjkuMS4xNzE2OTkxMDQyLjYwLjAuMA..">above 5,000 through 2024</a>.</p><p>This is in part because the macroeconomic outlook has brightened compared to the first half of 2023, when a recession was the base case for most economists.</p><p>Hussman has made headlines by predicting a massive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-news-john-hussman-says-stocks-at-record-valuations-will-lose-two-thirds-2018-1">stock-market decline</a> and forecasting a full decade of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-news-market-bear-sees-decade-of-stock-losses-wall-street-mad-2017-11">negative equity returns</a>, and as the stock market has kept grinding higher, he's persisted with his calls for a painful correction on the horizon. </p><p>In Tuesday's note, he also noted that his firm's most reliable measure — the ratio of nonfinancial market capitalization to corporate gross value-added —  now exceeds the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-1929-prediction-sp500-outlook-overvalued-john-hussman-2024-3?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">1929 extremes</a>, when the Dow plunged 89% peak-to-trough.</p><p>"Even the more conventional (but less reliable) S&amp;P 500 price/forward operating earnings multiple is at levels that have no rivals except surrounding the 2000 and 2022 peaks," Hussman said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Researchers have found 230 million tons of precious minerals off a remote island over 1,200 miles from Tokyo.</li><li>The motherlode contains enough cobalt and nickel to supply Japan for over a decade.</li></ul><p>The world is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bidens-tariffs-china-green-tech-graphite-ev-batteries-2024-5">scrambling to secure precious metals</a> to build EV batteries — and Japan may have just hit the jackpot.</p><p>Researchers have found a motherlode of around 230 million metric tons of minerals crucial to making electric car batteries on the seabed off a remote island around 1,200 miles from Tokyo.</p><p>The cache of manganese nodules lying 5,000 meters below the ocean surface contains enough cobalt to supply Japan for around 75 years.</p><p>It also contains more than a decade's worth of the country's annual nickel consumption, according to a press release provided by The Nippon Foundation, which conducted the survey in collaboration with the University of Tokyo.</p><p>Both minerals are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startups-racing-to-supply-360-billion-electric-vehicle-battery-market-2022-4">crucial components of electric vehicle batteries</a>, and the transition to EVs has sparked a global race to secure sources of the precious metals. <a target="_blank" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Electric-vehicles/Decades-worth-of-EV-battery-metals-found-off-remote-Japan-island">Nikkei</a> first reported on the discovery.</p><p>Researchers told Nikkei that the seabed around Minami-Torishima island contains around 610,000 metric tons of cobalt and 740,000 metric tons of nickel.</p><p>They scoured the area earlier this year with mining equipment and remote-controlled underwater vehicles and plan to begin extracting the first minerals in 2025.</p><p>Despite being an automotive powerhouse, Japan has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honda-15500-tiny-electric-truck-japan-photos-look-inside-2024-6">lagged behind many of its global rivals</a> in the race to build electric vehicles.</p><p>Just<a target="_blank" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Japan-EV-sales-hit-record-high-in-2023-but-with-slow-growth"> 2.2% of new passenger cars</a> sold in Japan in 2023 were electric, according to data from industry bodies, compared to 25% in EV pace-setter China.</p><p>The discovery of vast nickel, cobalt, and manganese reserves will raise hopes that will soon change.</p><p>Harvesting the materials on a commercial scale, which is expected to begin in 2026, will not be without challenges. Deep sea mining is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/fixing-deep-sea-mining-damage-would-be-double-cost-extraction-study-2023-06-29/">costly, technically difficult</a>, and often controversial, with Norway facing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norway-deep-sea-mining-precious-metals-depths-ocean-world-first-2024-1">opposition from environmentalists</a> over its own deep sea mining proposals.</p><p>The reward will likely be worth it, however. Demand for nickel and cobalt is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/02/22/fact-sheet-securing-a-made-in-america-supply-chain-for-critical-minerals/">expected to skyrocket in the coming decades</a>, with a White House paper estimating that demand will rise 400 to 600% as battery-powered technology replaces oil and gas.</p><p>For other materials used in EV batteries, such as lithium and graphite, that rise could be as much as 4,000%, according to US government figures.</p><p>Many of those metals are currently sourced from countries including Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where reports have suggested some workers face <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/nov/08/cobalt-drc-miners-toil-for-30p-an-hour-to-fuel-electric-cars">abuse, low wages</a>, and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-17/inside-indonesia-s-dangerous-nickel-mines-powering-an-ev-battery-boom">high risk of accidents</a>.</p>

But there was nothing to shield me from the staff inside watching me, stunned, sobbing, giddy with excitement about what a drug had done to my brain.</p><p>I can't count how many times Levain's cookies sabotaged me — a day of disciplined dieting broken as I got sucked into those buttery black holes. Often I fought the temptation; sometimes I won, but too frequently I felt my body pulse in anticipation of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-dopamine-restricting-for-procrastination-motivation-productivity-strategy-2022-6">dopamine</a> reward (mouth salivating, throat tensing) before caving to the cookies, resenting my choice, and feeling the familiar shame.</p><p>So when I realized I suddenly didn't care about stepping inside, I didn't trust it. I forced myself to visualize that first perfect bite, waiting for my mouth to water and jaw to ache … but nothing. When it dawned on me that I could win my daily battle without even fighting it, I felt like I'd learned how to breathe underwater, as if I'd lost enough weight to levitate.</p><p>I was skeptical about last year's glowing articles about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weight-loss-glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-mounjaro-effects-future-2023-12">Ozempic</a> and other GLP-1 medications. They're something far more powerful and surreal: injectable willpower.</p><p>GLP-1s' increasing popularity won't just mean that millions of us who've beat ourselves up for being overweight will be able to win that lifelong battle. It will mean fundamentally reevaluating our conception of free will and human agency — and reckoning with our tortured relationship with shame.</p><p>So much of diet culture, of our culture writ large, belittles the choices we make about food. What happens, then, when a drug reveals that eating, gambling, and so many other behaviors aren't choices at all? Just like when Prozac dismantled the myth that depression is a choice, or when earlier scientific advancements disproved the idea that illnesses like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Emperor-of-All-Maladies/Siddhartha-Mukherjee/9781439170915"><u>cancer were moral indictments</u></a>, GLP-1s and similar medications are changing our shared sense of what is blameworthy and what is biology.</p><hr /><p class="drop-cap">For those fortunate enough to never have struggled — seriously struggled — with weight, you have to understand just how futile most weight-loss strategies are. Though people can "succeed" in a diet for months, maybe even a year, many dieters eventually regain weight. Most of the dozens of<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longevity-diet-food-list-cheap-easy-2023-11"> diets</a> and health schemes I've been on over more than 30 years have helped for a time, but they all set me up to fail. For a long time, the only evidence-based strategy for safe, long-term weight management was surgery. But gastric surgery is expensive and painful, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3470459/"><u>many patients end up regaining weight</u></a>.</p>      <blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper pullquote-breakout">        <q class="pullquote-quotation">They're not really "weight-loss drugs" at all. For decades the fat-acceptance and fat-rights movements highlighted how size discrimination affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. Anti-fat bias costs people jobs, relationships, access to public spaces, and more. Fat-shaming and size discrimination also fuel eating disorders that affect tens of millions of people and <a target="_blank" href="https://anad.org/eating-disorder-statistic/"><u>kill more than 10,000 Americans annually</u></a>. But even as diet culture is deadly for some and discriminatory for countless more, many of us have a medical need to lose weight.</p><p>In 2017, everything changed during my physical — shocking cholesterol numbers turned into specialist visits, then a grim warning that I was cutting my life short. So I started on a massive project of weight loss, exercise, and lifestyle change. I set up a tracking sheet with a friend; we concocted a set of prizes for weeks when we were healthy and punishments for when we did badly. Having read so many studies about the failure rate for dieting, I decided I needed something that would truly terrify me if I seriously slipped. So I <a target="_blank" href="https://themoth.org/stories/with-a-little-help-from-my-nemesis">wrote out a check for $10,000</a> to the organization I hated most in the world, the National Rifle Association, and sent it to my friend. Through the combination of incentives, accountability, social pressure, and the mental image of Wayne LaPierre gleefully cashing my check, I lost 70 pounds and even ran a marathon.</p><p>But I couldn't outrun the statistics, and during COVID-19 isolation I lost so much of the progress I'd made. (No, the NRA never got a penny.) Even after the lockdown era, as I went running and lifted weights every week, I couldn't really make a dent.</p><div type="image" title="Albert Fox Cahn in front of Levain Bakery." height="1875" width="2500" msid="107724547" hostid="261"></div><p>My friend's experience after our health challenge was very different. In early 2022, he began taking Ozempic. The injectable drug simulates GLP-1, a hormone regulating metabolism. Soon after, my friend switched to Mounjaro, which also simulates a second hormone called gastric inhibitory polypeptide, or GIP. The results were staggering. While I went from one gimmicky diet to the next, giving up carbs and then intermittently fasting, my friend was losing weight week over week with seemingly no rules or restrictions. By last summer I felt so stuck, enervated, and even desperate that I gave <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mounjaro#:~:text=A%20doctor%20lost%2050%20pounds,for%20taking%20blood%2Dpressure%20medicine.">Mounjaro</a> a try.</p><p>Miraculously, in less than a week I got a script from my doctor. My insurance would help cover the cost; I didn't need preauthorization. The clerk at my CVS said it was the first time they'd see someone spend just $20 for a drug that usually retails for $1,000 to $1,200 a month. I was extremely lucky. Many health plans have <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/wegovy-ozempic-mounjaro-shortage-insurance-64014bc2887a518b33c597b2bf936e37"><u>refused to cover GLP-1s for weight loss</u></a>, citing limited approval from the Food and Drug Administration. But prescribing GLP-1s "off label" for weight loss is legal, and the surge in popularity has led to <u>drug shortages</u>. Sadly, many of those most at risk from obesity-related illness and diabetes have had a hard time accessing the medication. And as with every other aspect of American medicine, the impact is most acute for those from low-income communities of color.</p>      <blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper pullquote-breakout">        <q class="pullquote-quotation">It felt like I was pointing a loaded gun at the oversized belly I despised.</q>              </blockquote>    <p>I felt squeamish holding the glow-stick-sized autoinjector, still cold from the fridge. It was so underwhelming that I called my friend to make sure I hadn't screwed it up. Then I went about my day.</p><p>The change began the next morning. In the frantic deluge of emails and Zooms, I forgot about breakfast. By 2 in the afternoon, I realized I'd been going since 6 a.m. without a bite and still wasn't hungry. When I went into the kitchen, I was even more startled to see the coffee pot almost untouched. As a young lawyer I'd learned to exist off coffee, going through two, sometimes three pots of stovetop espresso a day. I never thought of my coffee habit as an addiction or poor impulse control — just as what my body wanted to keep up with the pace of work. But suddenly my choices were changing.</p><p>And when I walked out of my building to grab lunch, passed Levain, and still felt nothing, the enormity of my changed decisions hit me.</p><hr /><p class="drop-cap">The thing about a lifetime of shame is that you have no idea how heavy a burden it is until the moment you set it down. If you'd asked me what I thought about weight pre-Mounjaro, I would've said it was frustrating but generally no big deal. Sure, I struggled with diet and impulses, but didn't everyone? Only a day after the first injection, I realized just how much pain I'd carried with my pounds, and how the humiliation of obesity had become central to how I defined myself.</p><p>I don't know when I first became overweight, but I remember the moment I was taught to be ashamed of it. It was Halloween, and a group of us 8-year-olds went through the uniquely New York take on the holiday by pillaging dozens of walk-up apartments. We started on the top floor of the converted customs warehouse I called home in Greenwich Village before darting across town to the motherlode: my friend's 20-story, 500-unit building. Hours later we had bags of candy almost as large as we were. I sat down on my friend's couch to savor the first piece of the night — only, as I tore the red wrapper off the Kit Kat, a familiar voice behind me said, "No." I stammered some confused question: Why couldn't I start when everyone else was stuffing their face? "Because you're fat," the voice said, "and they're not."</p><p>The shame of that moment stuck with me for decades — a funhouse mirror that transformed me from a child into a pig. It became an unshakable part of what I conceived as my essential self. I was a "fat kid." Once I internalized that label, it became indelible. No matter what my actual weight was, I viewed it through that lens of moral failure. Being overweight, obese, and eventually morbidly obese felt like destiny, the inevitable byproduct of my failure to prioritize my health over my appetite. Even when I dieted, went on health kicks, or even ran the New York City Marathon, I still thought of myself as a profoundly flawed person, because of the food choices I wanted to make. The fat-shaming I encountered as a child was a part of me no matter how far I ran or how hard I dieted. And with that first Mounjaro injection, it began to disappear. I saw that while grown-ups and doctors had blamed me for overeating, my own biology had set me up to fail.</p><p>When you define yourself by being overweight, by your sense of weakness and failure, it warps how you view every other aspect of life. By nearly any measure, I'm a very driven person. After graduating from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-mba-program-grads-getting-jobs-drops-stanford-chicago-careers-2023-12">Harvard</a> Law School, I worked at one of the top law firms in the country before founding a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.stopspying.org"><u>civil-rights nonprofit</u></a>. No matter how many times you're told that everyone's metabolism is different, you don't truly believe it until the moment you feel it.</p><p>Others have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/31/opinion/ozempic-weight-loss-drugs.html"><u>noted the questions these drugs raise about free will</u></a><u>,</u> but many of these conversations have missed the role that shame plays in how we see weight. These drugs can reprogram not only how our brains make choices but how we view ourselves. They can stop the vicious feedback loop where our food choices and weight drive the shame that drives our food choices and weight.</p><hr /><p class="drop-cap">After seeing my own response to Mounjaro, I wasn't surprised to learn that researchers are investigating whether GLP-1s can treat addictions to <a target="_blank" href="https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bph.15677"><u>drugs, alcohol, smoking</u></a>, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/could-new-weight-loss-drugs-like-ozempic-treat-addiction1/"><u>gambling</u></a>. Some people have even reported that they've helped control compulsive behaviors like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/could-new-weight-loss-drugs-like-ozempic-treat-addiction1/"><u>skin picking</u></a>. The data is preliminary, and these drugs might not work for all these conditions. Still, it seems clear that these medications can help shape our behaviors in a way that wasn't possible. That's where the truly tough questions start.</p><p>GLP-1s highlights how often we blame, even punish, people for choices that aren't truly their own. And this goes far beyond food. Most legal scholars think that punishment is unjust without blameworthiness, but so many of those in our prisons and jails are arrested because of an addiction. We pretend we can delineate the brain and the body, untangling what's choice and what's craving. But it's a farce. Those with serious addictions (and their families) have long understood that biology and cognition are linked. GLP-1s will give millions more this crucial insight, bringing so much of our criminal system into question. Blameworthiness is the cornerstone of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/show/how-crime-works">criminalization</a>. It's why (at least in theory) we don't punish people for crimes they commit by accident, when incapacitated, or held at gunpoint. Viewed through the GLP-1 lens, so much of our legal system looks like Stephen Spielberg's "Minority Report." The film posited a bleak future where suspects were arrested for pre-crimes they had not yet committed, but would commit one day. Watching the movie, it feels so wrong to imprison people who haven't even chosen to break the law. And that same feeling could impact how we view the prosecution of DUIs, drug offenses, and much more.</p><div type="image" title="Photo of Albert Fox Cahn." height="1875" width="2500" msid="107724549" hostid="261"></div><p>Other vexing questions — like how and when to administer GLP-1s to kids — will come even sooner. About 17% of 10- to 17-year-olds in the US are classified as obese. While many contest current body-mass standards, millions of children are already being advised to lose weight. Who should choose whether to use GLP-1s? Should it be an option at all? It'd be one thing if these medications were just weight-loss drugs, but altering a child's mindset during development could have lifelong effects. The moral questions grow even thornier in cases where children and parents disagree. The ethics of consent become incredibly complex to navigate.</p><p>In just the past five months, Mounjaro has been bewilderingly life-changing for me: I've lost more than 40 pounds, started running again — finishing my first half marathon since Covid-19 started — and my cholesterol and blood pressure are the healthiest they've ever been. I've been freed from a growing list of medications doctors warned I might be shackled to for the rest of my life.</p><p>Shortly before writing this piece, I stopped taking Mounjaro for a month. I wanted to see what it'd be like to go back to the status quo. While many people who stop using GLP-1s <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.lww.com/ebp/citation/2023/05000/is_there_sustained_weight_loss_after.7.aspx"><u>start to put back on the pounds</u></a>, I managed not to regain weight. It was a hollow victory, though, because it was a month of agony. I constantly forced myself to turn away from the things I wanted, to ignore the endless array of temptations. 'Nine Perfect Strangers' star Melvin Gregg wanted to keep Jessica's fake nose and put it in a jar, like a 'science project'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider reached out to paparazzi who pursued <keyword id="14710" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Britney-spears">Britney Spears</keyword> at the height of her fame. </li><li>A New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/framing-britney-spears.html">documentary</a> has forced a reckoning over the pop icon's treatment by the <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword>. </li><li>They insist they were just documenting what they saw, even if history sees it differently.</li></ul><p>No, the paparazzi who pursued Britney Spears are not sorry. </p><p>"I'm in it for the money and the history," <keyword id="6354803" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Los-Angeles">Los Angeles</keyword> paparazzo Rick Mendoza said in a phone interview. "You think I give a <em>f--k</em> about somebody getting up on the wrong side of the bed, and they don't want their photograph taken? I don't give a <em>s--t</em>."</p><p>Paparazzi literally translates as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/books/review/the-golden-age-of-the-paparazzi.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">buzzing mosquitoes</a>. None one has ever looked upon a gaggle of them and thought an empathy convention had broken out. But a widely-discussed New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/framing-britney-spears.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">documentary</a> about <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-britney-spears-conservatorship-freebritney-movement-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spears</a>, "Framing Britney Spears," has reactivated interest in her iconically bad-some would say triggering-interactions with the paparazzi. It seemed plausible that some of them might be having regrets. </p><p>But when Insider reached out to several of the photographers who paid their bills selling images of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/britney-spears-net-worth-money-spending-fortune-conservatorship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Britney Spears</a>, the question of whether they are culpable in breaking the young star's poise all but failed to register as a reasonable question.</p><p>"Hollywood used to control the market. The paparazzi took that away," Mendoza insisted. "We made them people, too. <em>I'll</em> show you when they're taking out their garbage. <em>I'll</em> show you when they're picking their nose. Do people want to see that? Obviously yes.</p><p>"If someone's entertained, then the system is working," said Mendoza. (The two have a long history. Mendoza sued Spears for a 2007 incident, where he alleged the pop star had intentionally driven over his foot as she was leaving a parking garage after a judge suspended her rights to see her two young sons. The case was settled two years later, People <a href="https://people.com/celebrity/britney-spears-settles-lawsuit-with-paparazzi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.) </p><p>In the Hollywood paparazzo's perspective, he and Britney Spears - and Christina Aguilera and Paris Hilton - were scrimmaging in a fluid, ongoing public relations tournament that fields publicists, magazine editors and <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> show producers, too. </p><p>According to this narrative, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/britney-spears-is-ending-las-vegas-show-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Princess of Pop</a> wanted cameras trained on her, until she didn't. And how were photographers to know the difference. </p><div type="image" title="BS w bodyguard" height="1760" width="2346" msid="81099860" hostid="261"></div><p>"Britney was just as involved in when and how she was seen," insisted Meg Handler, who started seeing Britney pics while editing photos at the late-nineties Village Voice and couldn't <em>stop </em>seeing them by the time she did a stint on The Star magazine picture desk. "Those photographers were called. Most of the time, her people called. 'Britney's going to be here.' 'Britney's going to be there. That's how it worked."</p><p>"I think with Britney it just got out of control," she said.</p><p>A representative for Spears did not respond to a request for comment. </p><h3>THE DAYS OF PEAK PAPARAZZI </h3><p>The cat-and-mouse game between celebrities and photographers dates back to 1955, when the hypeman Harry Brand alerted the media as blonde ingenue Marilyn Monroe just so happened to be standing above an up-blowing grated in a white dress. By the time Britney shaved that head, the paparazzi game had grown unsustainably filthy and rich.</p><p>It's arguable that Opening Day of Peak Paparazzi was Aug. 28, 2003, at Radio City <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">Music</keyword> Hall. The VMAs. "Celebutants" such as Hilary Duff were getting record deals - their media queries outpacing those for actual artists - and Paris Hilton's first album had debuted days earlier. Paparazzi crawled to fill every available space. They lined every exit as the shooters sought to capitalize on this content motherlode. Snoop Dogg was photographed leading two women by leash into Radio City, on leashes; it was not a photo op Harry Brand would have seen coming. </p><p>The 2003 VMAs are, however, best known for Britney, Christina Aguilera, and Madonna performing "Like a Virgin." You need not have had cable to remember the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/1901258/vma-unforgettable-moments/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pictures</a> from when those three kissed.</p><p>"That's when it stopped being contained," said Julie Farman, an Epic publicist who handled Michael Jackson. "That to me was a huge inflection point." </p><p>Not much more than a year prior, the game was smaller. Mendoza began his career photographing, printing, and mailing pictures of '80s metal bands on the Sunset Strip. He moved on to shooting baseball players in Japan by 2000. When he returned, to focused on "all these little girls out here that were playing the game." Paris Hilton, whom he knew, for starters.  </p><p>While Mendoza was away the price of a professional-level digital camera had fallen to under $3000, down from around $20,000 when he was starting out. One shot of Jessica Simpson could pay for the investment 10 times over. Paparazzi work was now open to any hustler with an index finger and a dream. </p><p>"Photo agency owners would go around to hot spots, mainly places where they got their information," paparazzo Giles Harrison said. "You'd find someone who was parking cars last week at Spago restaurant." </p><p>This drop in entry barrier coincided with an explosion of outlets for celebrity photography content, such as Ok! And Hello! and an US that had just gone weekly. Just as significantly, fees for utilizing informer-style tip lines - the basis of "we caught so-and-so" stories - were going, up up, up. The-opportunist-to-<a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1851/weegee-arthur-fellig-american-born-austria-1899-1968/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Weegee</a> ratio grew lopsided as point-and-click and email send washed away holdout craftspersons and waved in grifters.</p><p>"Some photographers are good and some are bad. And some of us were not good people," Harrison said. "You might as well have thrown red meat to a shark," Harrison said.</p><div type="image" title="BS signs in blue.JPG" height="2333" width="3110" msid="81099862" hostid="261"></div><p>As her career exploded, Spears had a lot of competition for media attention, a wave she had learned to ride back when few believed in her. The lenses were her road companions while she was playing the malls of America. Their attention mattered no less once she had made it. And by then so many saw in her the opportunity for livelihood. </p><p>"That's where you got that pandemonium, that fever," said Randy Bauer, whose agency captured and sold the moment Britney Spears shaved her head, "because there was six figures, potentially, at the end of all that."</p><p>He adds: "Those things she'll forever be known for, that was her own doing. We were just there documenting that." </p><p>Some of the most difficult to watch moments in "Framing Britney Spears" are from the run-up to the meltdown that would define her and lead to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-britney-spears-conservatorship-freebritney-movement-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conservatorship</a> controlled by her father that's now at the heart of the "Free Britney" movement. Vulnerability has been rarely more tangible, the celebrity machine so out of control. By then, Diane Sawyer had <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-diane-sawyer-2003-interview-fan-backlash-documentary-reactions-2021-2">asked</a> her on national television "what did you do" to bring her ex <a href="https://www.insider.com/justin-timberlake-britney-spears-apology-janet-jackson-2021-2">Justin Timberlake</a> "so much pain," and she had been dragged for her choices as a mom. </p><p>"What can you say about misogyny?" New York Times critic-at-large Wesley Morris observes in the documentary. "There's a whole infrastructure to support it and when it's time for people to come, in a misogynistic culture, for a woman, there's a whole apparatus ready to do it."</p><p>Chaotic scenes from the 2000s of photographers crowding Britney would not happen today, those who were part of it insisted. There's better mental health awareness and more accountability for how the media behaves. Money's the matter. Celebrity is too diffuse in 2021 to bring forth many $30,000 images, not when stars curate their own images on Instagram.</p><p>It's worth noting that Spears' peer Beyonce - both are 39 - managed to elude the worst of America's celebrity obsession. The R&amp;B star toured and shopped with mother Tina Knowles and her father, R&amp;B music executive Matthew Knowles.</p><p>A hip-hop flack recalled watching Britney making her way alone through the Beverly Hills Mondrian lobby - alone - while "Hit Me Baby" was a hot record."Britney had no protection," she said. </p><p>In footage of that 2003 "Like a Virgin" performance, Beyonce can be seen in the front-row, clapping and smiling. She's the one who got away.</p>

They kept playing the game, exploring the world and cherishing the game's positive elements while holding out hope that Bungie would fix some of the major issues from the laundry list of bugs and head-scratching design decisions. Glitches, bugs, and even design choices can be tweaked or totally revamped, as players will soon see in the "House of Wolves" expansion, which will indeed affect other players that don't purchase the DLC. Players and fans have been waxing poetic on "Destiny" since the announcement because being able to dynamically improve this video game is something magical, and players love that they're being heard.&#xa0;</p><p>Bungie has previously said many times that "Destiny" is a 10-year game: There will be many expansion packs in the future, as well as future standalone games - Bungie is already hard at work on the "Destiny" sequel, even though players will reportedly be able to transfer their characters from one offering to the other.</p><p>But new content is all well and good: What's going to keep "Destiny" a hot game for years to come is how Bungie interacts and adapts to its community's wishes. <ul><li><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59566c64d084cca0008b6b7d-1024/gettyimages-804053298.jpg" alt="Trump" data-mce-source="Getty Images/Pool" /><p class="source"><span>Getty Images/Pool</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><strong>At least a dozen states pushed back against a broad request from the White House commission on voter fraud.</strong></li><li><strong>The states included Indiana, whose secretary of state sits on the commission.</strong></li><li><strong>The requested information has raised questions about the ways it can be used.</strong></li></ul><p>At least a dozen states are already pushing back against a request by President Donald Trump's voter-fraud commission to hand over registered voters' personal information to make public. </p><p>The bipartisan Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, led by Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, sent a letter to all 50 states on Wednesday seeking registered voters' names, addresses, dates of birth, partial Social Security numbers, and party registration.</p><p>It also asked for a decade's worth of voter history, information on felony convictions, and whether they have registered in more than one state. <span>The commission said all voter data submitted by the states would be made public, and t</span><span>he Justice Department sent a separate letter asking states to reveal how they maintain their voter rolls.</span></p><p>At least 12 secretaries of state - from Indiana, California, Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Minnesota, Utah, Oklahoma, New York, Tennessee and New Mexico - have so far declined to hand over information that is not already publicly available. </p><p>Indiana's secretary of state, Connie Lawson, sits on the commission. But she said in a statement that "<span>Indiana law doesn't permit the Secretary of State to provide the personal information requested by Secretary Kobach." There is no evidence to support Trump's repeated assertion that he lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton in November's election because people voted illegally, independent experts and analysts have said.</span></p><p><span>Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes said in a statement that "Kentucky will not aid a commission that is at best a waste of taxpayer money and at worst an attempt to legitimize voter suppression efforts across the country."</span></p><p><span>"The president created his election commission based on the false notion that 'voter fraud' is a widespread issue - it is not," Grimes said. "Indeed, despite bipartisan objections and a lack of authority, the president has repeatedly spread the lie that 3-5 million illegal votes were cast in the last election."</span></p><p><span>States are already wary of accepting federal help when it comes to voting and election systems. States pushed back when the Department of Homeland Security wanted to designate their voter systems as "critical infrastructure" before the election last year, and are still reluctant to allow the government to conduct a complete digital forensics analysis of the voting machines to see if they were tampered with. </span></p><h2><span>'Serious privacy concerns' and 'laying the groundwork for voter suppression'</span></h2><p><span>Election law and voter-fraud experts broadly agree that the commission's request is not only baseless, but an infringement on privacy and states' rights. </span></p><p><span></span><span>"Having all of this information raises serious privacy concerns," wrote Rick Hasen, an election law expert and professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. "Will the information be kept securely, or is it at risk of being hacked for identity theft purposes? Will it be used by the Trump campaign and other political officials for political purposes? How secure will this be?"</span></p><p><span id="socialHighlighted">Ari Berman, <span>a contributing writer for The Nation who is writing a book on the history of voting rights, wrote Friday that "n</span></span><span>ever before has a White House asked for such broad data on voters, and it could be easily manipulated by Trump's commission."</span></p><p><span>Berman said the request could be a pretext to make it harder to register to vote, leading to widespread voter suppression efforts.</span></p><p><span>"Kobach has a very well-documented record of making <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/13/magazine/the-man-behind-trumps-voter-fraud-obsession.html?_r=0">wildly misleading claims about voter fraud</a> and enacting policies that sharply limit access to the ballot in his home state of Kansas," he wrote. "He's been sued four times by the ACLU for voter suppression and was <a href="http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/kobach-sanctioned-deceptive">sanctioned by a federal court</a> last week for 'deceptive conduct and lack of candor.'"</span></p><p><span>Vanita Gupta, who ran the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department during the Obama administration and now heads the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, agreed that Pence and Kobach appeared to be "laying the groundwork for voter suppression."</span></p><p><span>"The integrity of our elections is indeed under assault - just not in the way Trump claims," she <a href="https://twitter.com/vanitaguptaCR/status/880479649817649152">tweeted</a> Thursday. </span></p><h2><span>A 'gold mine' of voter information</span></h2><p><span>There is also the question of whether making this personal information, including Social Security numbers and military status, publicly available in one place risks making it more vulnerable to manipulation and misuse by adversaries.</span></p><p><span>Russian hackers targeted election systems in at least 21 states last year, top DHS official Jeanette Manfra told the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this month. 'A waste of taxpayer money': Trump's voter fraud commission is facing pushback from a dozen states

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554cf6d1ecad045560164641-1200-600/wealthy-people-picnic-6.jpg" border="0" alt="Wealthy People Picnic"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/visitors-to-the-henley-royal-regatta-enjoy-a-car-park-news-photo/451607318">Flickr / Matt Cardy</a></span></p><p class="caption">Advanced degrees have their advantages, but they aren't a prescription for wealth.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Once upon a time, becoming a white-collar professional like a doctor, lawyer, or college professor meant you would be rich - or at least, richer than most everyone else.</p><p>Today, things are a little different.</p><p>Students are still choosing to attend law school, medical school, business school, or pursue a PhD. <a href="http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=372">The National Center for Education Statistics</a> reports that schools are expected to award <span>821,000 master's degrees and 177,500 doctoral degrees in 2015.</span></p><p><a href="http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_chart_001.htm">Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics</a> from 2014 illustrates that with each successive degree, your earning potential increases, as well as your likelihood of finding employment.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554ce974eab8ead62f7ab057-805-448/screen shot 2015-05-08 at 12.50.10 pm.png" border="0" alt="BLS chart employment and earnings by degree"><p class="source"><span>Bureau of Labor Statistics</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That's good news, until you take two more factors into account: The debt these former students took on to get there, and what they're actually being paid.</p><h3>First, the debt. </h3><p><a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/numbers/congatulations-to-class-of-2014-the-most-indebted-ever-1368/">The Wall Street Journal</a> writes that "<span>15% of graduate and professional school students graduate with six-figure student loan debt, <span>compared with only 0.3% of undergraduate students."</span></span></p><p>A <a href="https://www.edvisors.com/media/files/student-aid-policy/20140107-debt-at-graduation.pdf">2014 study from college planning site EAdvisors</a> found that:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">51.9% of master's degree recipients graduate with student loans, the average amount of which is $56,661</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">37.5% of doctoral degree recipients take on loans, average amount $74,958</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">57.3% of professional degree recipients on take on loans, average amount $146,466</span></li></ul><p>Compared to undergraduate students, EAdvisors finds the likelihood that grad students will hold six-figure debt has grown disproportionately over the past two decades:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554cf049ecad043d2e164644-727-519/screen shot 2015-05-08 at 1.18.19 pm.png" border="0" alt="edvisors chart"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.edvisors.com/media/files/student-aid-policy/20140107-debt-at-graduation.pdf">Edvisors/ Debt at Graduation</a></span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>Next, the salaries.</h3><p><a href="http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_table_education_summary.htm">The BLS</a> reports that holders of a doctoral or professional degree earn an average of $96,420 a year, and holders of a master's degree earn an average of $63,400 a year. Using BLS data on some of the better-known white-collar occupations, here's <a href="http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm#00-0000">the average annual salary of</a>:</p><ul><li>Postsecondary teachers (college instructors and professors, not broken down by subject): <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">$75,780</span></li><li>Lawyers: $133,470</li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">CEOs: $180,700</span></li><li>Physicians and surgeons: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">$194,990</span></li></ul><p>Compared to the average annual wage of all US workers - <a href="http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm#00-0000">$47,230</a> - thos<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">e are impressive figures. However, things aren't as great as the dollars and cents seem. First of all, there's the problem of getting the jobs that pay. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/27/business/dealbook/burdened-with-debt-law-school-graduates-struggle-in-job-market.html">The New York Times</a> reports that only 40% of law school grads from the class of 2010 are working at law firms, and that the class is experiencing a 6% unemployment rate.</span></p><p>As far as college professors, a 2015 report from the <a href="http://www.aaup.org/sites/default/files/files/2015salarysurvey/zreport.pdf">American Association of University Professors</a> finds:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In the six years since the Great Recession, real year-over-year faculty salaries have declined 0.12 percent. Despite occurring in a period of relatively low inflation, the overall increase in average salary for continuing faculty exceeded the cost of living by 1.05 percent in the years since the Great Recession.</span></p><p>Plus, <span>academia is a competitive field. For example, consider </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/reality-of-being-an-adjunct-professor-2015-5">the essay published on Buzzfeed</a> by adjunct college professor <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattdebenham/bagging-groceries-grading-papers">Matt Debenham</a>, who makes more at his second job at the grocery store than at the job for which he was trained.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554d267e6bb3f7e207e934f2-1200-600/professor-teaching-3.jpg" border="0" alt="Professor teaching"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/tulanesally/5158332661/in/set-72157607344465821">Tulane Public Relations/Flickr</a></span></p><p class="caption">The advanced credentials required to teach at the university level don't always mean earning a lot.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Doctors may have the brightest outlook, in that specialists like anesthesiologists and surgeons earn the highest annual median wages in the US - <a href="http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm#00-0000">$246,320 and $240,440</a>, respectively - followed by many of their med-school peers.</p><p>Still, the path to high earnings is a difficult one for doctors, who spend more time in school than almost anyone else. If you consider their first years out of class as their first on the job, their starting salaries aren't so high. At the Atlantic, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/08/a-junior-doctors-salary/375642/">James Hamblin, MD</a>, writes that doctors, who spend most of their 20s in residency furthering their schooling, earn relatively little early in their <keyword id="6354910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Careers">careers</keyword>. He cites data from <a href="http://www.medscape.com/features/slideshow/public/residents-salary-and-debt-report?src=wnl_edit_specol&amp;uac=169119DY#4">Medscape</a>:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554d25716da8110b032a637f-748-461/screen shot 2015-05-08 at 5.05.01 pm.png" border="0" alt="medscape chart"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.medscape.com/features/slideshow/public/residents-salary-and-debt-report?src=wnl_edit_specol&amp;uac=169119DY#4">Medscape</a></span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On the website <a href="http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2013/03/dear-lawmakers-doctor-today.html">KevinMD.com</a>, Matthew Moller, MD, provides an in-depth <a href="http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2013/03/dear-lawmakers-doctor-today.html">explanation of his situation</a>, holding a massive amount of debt but not yet earning the salary he needs to make a dent - and because it earns interest, the longer you hold debt, the more you ultimately pay overall<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">$196,000. That was the bill, for the tuition, the tests, the books, the late night pizza. $196,000 financed through a combination of student loans, personal loans, and high-interest credit cards, now consolidated, amalgamated, homogenized into one life-defining number for my personal convenience.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I then relocated to Michigan and moved into a small condo in Ann Arbor, where I started my residency. As a resident in Internal Medicine, I earned a salary of $39,000. All the while, interest continued to accrue on my mother-lode of debt at the rate of $6000 per year due to the high debt burden. Paying down this debt was not possible while raising two children. My wife began working, but her meager salary as a teacher was barely enough to cover day care costs.
