And Andy Garcia is all for it. Garcia played Vincent, the illegitimate son of Sonny Corleone, in the third chapter of the acclaimed "The Godfather" saga, which looks at the Corleone mafia family, based on the book series by author Mario Puzo. In the movie, he becomes the main muscle for Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and by the end gets the Godfather title as Michael fades from the family business.Since the 1990s, Garcia has an idea on what the fourth installment might entail and he told Insider while talking over Zoom that he's willing to direct it - if Coppola, who directed the original "Godfather" films, gave his blessing."Absolutely, command me as you will," Garcia said without hesitation when asked if he would consider directing "Godfather 4." "Whatever Francis wants, I would never question it. I owe him," he added. And it would have brought back Robert De Niro to reprise his "Godfather Part II" role as young Vito Corleone with Leonardo DiCaprio joining to play Sonny Corleone.Garcia said the story structure would mirror "Godfather II" in which it would move back and forth over two time periods. In the present, Garcia's Vincent, now the Godfather, moves the family business back into more illegal operations. While flashing back to the 193os, it would follow a young Sonny Corleone."Maybe Vincent is dealing with the cartel at the time," Garcia explained. "And then go back to the 1930s, in the happy years when the Corleones killed everybody and nobody killed them."And Garcia revealed that he was the one who got DiCaprio interested to play Sonny, who was originally played by James Caan in "The Godfather.""My manager at the time was representing Leonardo DiCaprio and they were working with Francis on a project and I just mentioned that Francis always had this idea for another 'Godfather,'" Garcia said. "I said Leo DiCaprio is the right age - this was back in the 1990s - to play a young Sonny in the 1930s. And De Niro could play Vito because he would be the right age for him in the '30s. And then on the other side of the story would be me and Al returning as Michael. "The fact that Mario wasn't around took the wind out of the sails for Francis."However, decades later Garcia is still enthusiastic to play Vincent again, a role that earned him his only Oscar nomination to date."For Paramount, it's a franchise. Even if you wanted to do a limited series called 'Vincent' that doesn't have to do with the other <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>," he added, "people want to see it."And Garcia taking on the directing reigns would not be a fluke. It led to a powerful performance that continues to captivate audiences decades later.Director Francis Ford Coppola has tweaked the final chapter of his acclaimed mafia saga - changing around the beginning and ending of the movie and shortening the running time - with the release of "Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone."Ahead of the release of "The Godfather, Coda" (in theaters Friday and on Blu-ray/DVD December 8), Insider had a Zoom chat with Garcia about the making of "The Godfather III," a glimpse inside the drama of making the movie - specifically the sudden casting change of Winona Ryder for Sofia Coppola in the Mary role - and his hopes for the continuation of the Vincent character in another movie or TV series.<h2>Garcia says he's never tired of people talking to him about 'The Godfather III' - and if there will be a part IV</h2>Tell me what was going through your head when you watched the new cut of "The Godfather Part III."I was just watching it as I watched it the first time. I was very engaged and I was very emotional at the end. I watched it with [co-stars] Al [Pacino] and Diane [Keaton] and George Hamilton, and Talia [Shire] at Paramount on the big screen. And it rekindles a lot of memories when you watch something that was so important in your life. It wasn't just any movie being a part of that. It was a very important time in my life so there is a profound connection I have to the film.It seems like you don't mind having had to talk about your involvement in this movie for 30 years now. Does that not get to you? The constant questions?No. It's been such a privilege to be associated with Francis and this movie. "The Godfather" and "Godfather II" are very influential in my life. "The Godfather" catapulted me into wanting to aspire to do that kind of acting. And here I was asked to be a part of it, so this is one of the most important things I've done in my life.<h2>Garcia got to take his father to the Oscars, who always worried about his son getting into acting</h2>And on top of all that, you get an Oscar nomination. All this must have a special place in your heart. Of course. It's your colleagues speaking about your work. It's that most important accolade you can possibly get. And I was able to take my father to the Oscars, he was in the last years of his life. So that was a special time for him because we had no history in show business at all in our family. Me going off to be an actor to him was difficult. He worried.And this was like, "Look, Dad, I'm doing it." It was an important moment in his life.I would imagine being on "The Godfather III" set for you at that time in your career was surreal because the largest set you were probably on before that was "The Untouchables," right? Yeah. And the set on "The Untouchables" was more intimate other than the big shoot out at the bridge. But on "The Godfather" we had operas and the opening party. And it was a long shoot, too. It was like five months.Did it take you a while to get into a groove and really get Vincent down? Because along with the scope of the movie, Francis was changing the script all the time. No. I was ready to go. I had been wanting to play this part all my life. [Laughs.] Here's the thing, just like Vincent wants to be part of the Corleone family, so did I. When you show up, regardless who you're opposite from, you have to be ready to go. That's my job.<div type="image" title="godfather3paramount" height="575" width="1020" msid="79571066" hostid="261"></div><h2>He never got to meet Winona Ryder before her dramatic exit from the movie that led to Sofia Coppola starring</h2>And you had to be light on your feet with this. At one time you were going to work across from Winona Ryder as Mary. That didn't happen as <a href="https://archive.vanityfair.com/article/1990/6/under-the-gun">she got anxiety attacks</a> and left the movie, causing Sofie Coppola taking the role. Did you even get to rehearse with Winona before she left?No. Never even met her. She came to the set that day and was in makeup. I was giving her space because they were doing some tests with her. I figured when she's finished I'm sure they will bring her out to the set and I'll meet her. But she went home and couldn't work and that was it. I never met her. I met her later on in life. She was in another movie so she wasn't even in the original week of rehearsals we did in Napa when we first started. But Sofia was there and she sat in and read the part even back then. So when Sophia was cast I was like, "Let's go, I'm all in." When Michael says, "Give up my daughter. It's the price you pay for the life you choose." That's a scene that you better get right. [Laughs.] I was very proud of the work Al and I did in that scene. That was done in a reshoot. Francis wrote that scene after he assembled the movie a little bit and we went back to New York. That's when he shot that scene.Wow. So Al and I had months and months already of working together. So suddenly we get the pages in New York and I was like, okay, this is the scene. There were many different versions of that scene, even from the beginning. Francis kept tinkering. And this was finally the definitive thing he wanted to do. I think the pages came out that morning and we shot it in the afternoon.Legend has it Francis' trailer on set was pretty impressive. It even had a jacuzzi. Did you ever go in it?No. But I saw it. Never went in it. And it wasn't that big. [Laughs.]It was one occupant only. Oh yeah.<div type="image" title="leooscars" height="1386" width="1848" msid="79571073" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Godfather IV' almost happened in the 1990s, and Leonardo DiCaprio would have starred in it</h2>As you mentioned, you always get asked if there will be a "Godfather 4." Let me ask it this way: If Francis doesn't want to make a "Godfather 4" but he comes to you and says, "This is a great story for Vincent, go and direct and star in it." Would you do it?Absolutely. Command me as you will. When we were doing the story we had some conversations about Vincent and maybe another chapter. Maybe Vincent is dealing with the cartel at the time and then going back to the 1930s, a period of the time that hasn't been explored [in the franchise].The glory years. Francis would say "the happy years" when the Corleones killed everybody and nobody killed them.I remember there was a conversation when we were making it, just a loose conversation and it was always in my mind. And if he wanted to do it, he would do it. If he wanted someone else to do it and say "I have spoken to such and such director," I don't think there's any harm in that at all. People want to see it. For Paramount it's a franchise. Even if you wanted to do a limited series called "Vincent" that doesn't have to do with the other <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>. Vincent wants to be given the order to kill them all, but Michael knows that if he does, his dream of making the Corleone family legitimate will never happen. Michael finally transfers his power to Vincent to do what must be done. However, he tells Vincent he must "give up my daughter. It's the price you pay for the life you choose." Vincent agrees.Garcia said the transfer of power scene was one Coppola tinkered with throughout the five-month shoot of the movie. But it wasn't until principal photography wrapped that Coppola felt he got it right."Francis wrote that scene after he assembled the movie a little bit and we went back to New York," Garcia said. "That's when he shot that scene."So though the scene is set in Italy, it was really shot in New York months after the main shooting ended. Garcia said what was great about doing a scene of that importance during reshoots was the history he already had with Pacino."Al and I had months and months already of working together," he said. Now, I don't know how many takes this took to get this shot, but usually, they use the best take, and in my opinion, if this is the best take that they used, something went wrong on set. Something seriously went wrong on set.Venarius: And now I'm gonna kill you.Anthony Gilardi: So okay, here we go, this piece is done in a certain era, and to me, judging by the leisure suits and all that, I'm looking at maybe the '''70s, early ''80s. We're talking about a ninja movie. It's meant to be a little bit campy.Man 1: What's this jazz?Man 2: I don't know, bru tha.Anthony Gilardi: Now, I want you guys to think of what it must have looked like on the set when the actor's actually doing it without slow motion, and yeah, the way that his eyes were just like, "I'm sorry that I'm dying'. "What are you gonna do, I'm surprised." You know, you have a gun and you're in a ninja movie. Don't be surprised if you get hit with a shuriken. That's all I'm gonna say about that. The luxury that the actor actually has right here is, nobody knows what it really looks like to die after getting hit with a shuriken in the chest. So no one's gonna look at it and say, "No no, I got hit with a shuriken in the chest before. "That's not the way you die." So in my opinion, the actor should have used that and just made it real.Venarius: Oh really?Anthony Gilardi: Any kind of kung fu movie, I always try to cut a little bit of slack, but this one...I mean Denzel's Denzel, man. I mean, you gotta love Denzel. Don't underestimate how powerful of a moment those eyes are, how powerful those eyes are in telling the story. No words, no nothing. In this story, we don't know if he's a human being, a supreme being, an angel, a devil. He gets shot, is he gonna die? Is he gonna be resurrected right here before our eyes? Is he gonna just jump up and say, "I don't die."And the thing I love about what Denzel is doing right here is he is painting the picture that he's not even sure. Look at those eyes. He's saying to himself, using his inner monologue, which is an amazing technique that the best actors in the world have perfected, including Denzel. Am I dying, am I gonna live, can I die? With the confusion in his eyes, we're on the edge of our seats waiting to see what's going to happen next. Whether he dies or whether he lives, we are going to <keyword id="47501" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marvel">marvel</keyword> in the moment either way.Carnegie: God is good, is he not?Anthony Gilardi: Now we have something that has gone viral.It looks like the ''70s, slow motion, music, and here we go. Just picture what the scene looks like on the set as they're shooting it. Later on, we're gonna see clips of slow motion shots that work. This does not work.Anthony Gilardi: Now what the actors did wrong, in my strong opinion here, is they simply didn't just die. Campy, yes, maybe funny even, but I guarantee when they made this movie, they didn't say, "Let's shoot a funny dying scene."So now we're talking about a very very good actor, Sean Bean, known for dying in multiple roles in multiple films. We have his last breath and we get it. I think the actor just tried to do a little bit too much. Bulging your eyes, spitting up blood, trying to hang on, the head tilt, just a little bit too much acting for the moment that we are telling. My hat goes off to the actor, that his craft kept on getting better. I believe this is very early on in his career. I have seen him later on in his career, using the less is more theory to perfection.We got Jackie Chan. When you have a genre like this, you need to think of it more like a dance, almost more like a musical than a film. And I know that's weird because they're not singing or anything like that, but it's really more about choreography. So if you look at a genre like this as more of a musical, then this scene is actually very very good because it is choreographed in a beautiful way, using physicality in a beautiful way, just like a dancer does. The guy dying on the other hand, the way we have the slow motion and he's grabbing his crotch and he's yelling and his eyes are bulging out of his head, the choreography hides the sins a little bit of the campiness. And believe it or not, I give this one a pass.Padme: There's good in him. I know there's still-Anthony Gilardi: Natalie Portman is a victim of the style. They're trying to fit too many things into one scene.Padme: Luke.Obi-Wan: It's a girl.Padme: Leia.Anthony Gilardi: I'm not a big fan of forcing in dialogue. That definitely is not Natalie Portman's fault, however I think she could've just delivered it in a way that she was struggling and dying instead of making it clear. It's almost like, this baby's name is Luke. Did everybody hear that? This baby's name is Leia, everybody got that? We ready, okay, now it's time for the head tilt and I'm dead. Not a big fan of the classic closing of the eyes, head tilt, now I'm clearly dying. It's a lack of trust in the audience to say that, if your head doesn't tilt here, then we're not gonna realize that this character is dead.I'll stop this right here. We're talking about the death of a character that has just been involved in pageantry. It's literally the opposite of what I was saying earlier when I was saying less is more with death. And, in this case, Nicole Kidman does a really good job.Satine: I'm sorry, Christian.Christian: I love you.Anthony Gilardi: I would usually very very much dislike a moment like this, the smile, and the makeup, the perfection of somebody dying which most of the time does not work, but I take things story by story. And I think that, if she went even bigger, I still think it would've worked.Satine: I'll always be with you.Anthony Gilardi: 99 out of 100 times, I would say, smiling as you're dying will not work. With this character in this moment, I don't even want to say she gets a pass for smiling during her death. I think that it was a good choice. I think it was a strong acting choice and she committed to it and it's a testament to the storytellers understanding the story that they're telling.Mary Corleone: Dad?Anthony Gilardi: I'm gonna make this very very short. Being Italian-American, to a lot of us, including me, Godfather III should not have happened. I feel that Godfather I and Godfather II should've just been left alone. The death scenes in Godfather I and Godfather II were as real, simple and as close to perfection as can be. That is weak and campy in a story that should not be weak and campy. So to me, I go directly into denial and Godfather III simply didn't happen. This never happened, it doesn't exist. Doesn't exist.Peter: We won, Mr. Stark!Anthony Gilardi: We get a nice, beautiful closeup of Robert Downey Jr. He makes his peace with his love interest. He makes his peace with his protege and now, he's supposed to have that moment of inner monologue. Do I wanna die? Do I wanna live? Now, I feel that Iron man in this moment accepts the fact that he's going to die, which I love that choice. I think that it should've been internalized more than externalized. We go back to Denzel dying in "Book of Eli." The character has inner monologue. We stop right there on Denzel's eyes. We know what he's thinking. We know he's confused, so we get sucked in. Denzel internalized the moment and it showed up externally, and I think that if Robert Downey Jr, because he's such a great actor, internalized the moment, it would have showed up externally as well and it would've been a much more powerful moment.You see the reactions of the other characters. We pan back to him and he's dead. See this shot right here? Falls into the category of the head tilt, the eyes, the closing of the eyes, the not closing of the eyes. I think that the moment that he has with his love interest and the moment that he has with his protege was strong enough, should've been left right there.Pepper: We're gonna be okay.Green Goblin: Peter, don't tell Harry.Anthony Gilardi: Another very very good actor, elite actor.Green Goblin: Godspeed, Spiderman.Anthony Gilardi: They clearly wanted this scene to go this way. The actor just goes limp, but of course, has something to say.Green Goblin: Peter, don't tell Harry.Anthony Gilardi: Willem Dafoe, it's really difficult for me to cut him slack because I know that he's a better actor than this. I think, in this scene, what happened was, the storytellers have a tough time between deciding is, are we gonna make a movie out of this? Is it gonna be dark or are we gonna use the comic book version of these moments? Then, let's make it look like a comic book coming to life. Either way will work. It just needs to be consistent. A lotta times, actors get caught up in between. I think, in this case, it's dark, it's death, it's drama, and then they try to add like, almost like a cartoon element to it at the same time.Anthony Gilardi: Now we go back to the Jackie Chan film where they were consistent. We are not gonna pretend it's anything except what it is. So now, all of a sudden, when we see this and Jackie Chan and the guy dying with the bug eyes and stuff like that, we expect it. With Spiderman, Green Goblin, the problem was, they didn't decide which way we're going to go with it and because of that, they fell short.Green Goblin: I had nothing to do with it.Tony Montana: You think you'll kill me with bullets?Anthony Gilardi: So the cool thing about this is, he establishes characters so well.Tony Montana: What do you think I am, huh? Wanna play games? Okay, I'll play with you. Come here.Anthony Gilardi: We know you can't get shot with 50 bullets and live.Tony Montana: Who do you think I am, huh?Anthony Gilardi: Don't underestimate how well of an actor Pacino is, to establish that we're still thinkin' to ourselves, "It's Tony Montana, he's not your average man. "He's not gonna die."And then, when he dies, it's still a shock, even though he's getting hit with bullets.He's gonna live, he's gonna live, he's gonna live, he's not gonna die. Oh no.Anthony Gilardi: Now Nicolas Cage has a kind of style. So Nicolas Cage, in this moment, is doin' his Nicolas Cage thing. This is a very very cool story up until this point, when I see Nicolas Cage dying' instead of the character dying.Sgt. Enders: Our Lord is with me.Anthony Gilardi: I think that is the problem with this one. If I look at the scene and I see the Nicolas Cage from "Moonstruck," if I see the Nicolas Cage from "Peggy Sue Got Married," it's gonna bring me out of it. I should see this character in this moment dying, nothing else.Anthony Gilardi: So, to our hero, Elias is like the good angel on his shoulder, but now we're seeing the good angel die.Willem Dafoe, now we saw him earlier with the Green Goblin, and I feel that the genre kinda got caught between an action film and a comic book film. In this case, it's very very clear. This is an out-and-out drama. This is probably as serious of a drama as a film has ever been.When he raises his arms, now we see an angel ascending back into Heaven. And now the slow motion works. Again, 99 out of 100 times, I would say something like, it's too dramatic, it's too much. Does he need his arms raised like this? Well, because it caters towards the story, he's supposed to be like an angel dying. And so, it works in this case.There's amazing interviews with Dafoe talking about the challenges that he had on the set. So, if you look closely to it, in his left hand, he actually has a squib detonator. And he is pressing the button to make the squibs look like little explosions that look like bullets hitting him. He's actually controlling that himself. You can see the wire coming out of his hand going into his vest that has all the squibs, that this actor had all these challenges in this moment right here and still executed was a testament to his passion as a storyteller. I admire this moment so much.Ah, here we go. Samuel L. Jackson, who I'm a huge fan of, probably the best character actor that ever walked the face of the earth. And, part of the problem with him knowing that he's a great character actor is, sometimes we see the same thing that I'm talking' about with Nicolas Cage, where it is, all right, I'm gonna do my Samuel L. Jackson thing. A lotta people go to a Samuel L. Jackson film to see him do his thing. And that's cool, I can totally totally see that, but anytime I'm watching an actor that takes me out of the story, this death was way too dragged out, way too dramatic for this particular film. Samuel L. Jackson's character falls off the balcony onto the floor. He falls to his death, but he doesn't just fall to his death. He still has something to say.Valentine: What's up, man? This is the part where you say something really bad, huh?Eggsy: This ain't that kinda movie, bruv.Valentine: Perfect.Anthony Gilardi: Just picture Tony Montana falling off the balcony into the fountain. Somebody comes up to him and he still has more to say.Valentine: What's up, man?Anthony Gilardi: I'm not gonna blame it 100% on Samuel L. Jackson. I'm sure that the powers that be wanted him to do that and I totally see why they cast him for that. I simply think that this death scene does not work.Valentine: I can't watch this.Darth Vader: Luke, help me take this mask off.Luke: But, you'll die.Darth Vader: Nothing can stop that now.Anthony Gilardi: Now Luke slowly takes off the helmet and we are left with Humpty Dumpty.- You were right about me. Tell your sister you were right.Anthony Gilardi: I think the scene doesn't work because it completely takes us out of the moment when you see Humpty Dumpty like this with a giant gash in his head.Luke: Father, I won't leave you.Anthony Gilardi: This is not on the actor. The actor did a real good job of looking right in the eyes of his son in a very very apologetic way. He's apologizing for the fact that Luke had to grow up without a father. So I give the actors big big props for doing his best, but I think his hands were tied, and I think that no matter what, the moment wasn't gonna work no matter what.Darth Vader: You underestimate the power of the dark side.Anthony Gilardi: The character of Caesar that Joaquin Phoenix is playing, he thinks in his mind that he is going to live. Very much like Denzel Washington earlier, you can see the inner monologue in Joaquin Phoenix's eyes.We don't need music to help the story. We don't need slow motion. We don't need anything. You see him, it's almost like he's saying, "No, no, it's not supposed to be this way. "I'm Caesar, I'm an emperor. "Emperors don't die, I set it up so I don't die. "I don't understand what's going on."And as the knife goes into his heart, we still see the misunderstanding of what is happening. We still see him trying to fight. As bad of a character as he is, as far as he's the bad guy in the story, I think he had a very very noble death. Up until this moment, we have seen Joaquin Phoenix's character be weak, insecure, have a complex, and we don't see a lot of real fight in this character up until this point. This is the most fight, in death, that we've ever seen this character have in life.And I think that is an amazing choice for an actor, because now, when he dies, we're less likely to say, "Good, that character is dead and I'm glad that he's dead." We're more likely to say, "Man, that character was misunderstood." Now I'm telling you right now, if audience members are thinking that in their head, even if they're doing it subliminally, we have told an amazing story, and that's what great actors do. This is probably as good of a death scene, as far as acting goes, as you're ever going to see.

"The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap" is set for release on August 20. It's split into nine discs, which will encapsulate four decades-worth of hip hop and rap into 129 songs. In an announcement made by <a href="https://folkways.si.edu/smithsonian-anthology-of-hip-hop-and-rap-intl">Smithsonian Folkways Recordings</a>, the Smithsonian Insititute said that the goal of the anthology was to tell "the story of a defining era of <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> 'of, by, and for the people.'" The article also described it as a "first-of-its-kind multimedia collection chronicling the growth of the music and culture from the parks of the Bronx to solidifying a reach that spans the globe."This is the Smithsonian Folkway Recordings' third anthology, following "Anthology of American Folk Music" (1953) and "Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology" (2011). The anthology, which is a partnership between Smithsonian Folkway Recordings and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is paired with a 300-page book, designed by Cey Adams, the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings. The book will feature essays and photos. The entire project centers on the evolution of rap and hip hop. Those involved in the selection and curation process were: rappers MC Lyte and Chuck D; the artist Questlove; scholars Jeff Chang and Mark Anthony Neal; and early Def Jam executives Bill Adler and Bill Stephney.The anthology features monumental songs in hip-hop from giants like NWA, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and more. It captures an excellent mix of new and old - and for some, it's also a solid mix of familiar and unfamiliar tracks. It's always the girl who survives a killer, it has to rain during every funeral, and, yes, the third film in a <keyword id="633199" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trilogy">trilogy</keyword> almost always sucks.And it's not just the terrible ones. Some of the most critically acclaimed trilogies also suffer from the threequel curse. And it got us wondering, what's really happening here?The first thing we needed to find out was just how common bad threequels really are. And, surprisingly, the hardest part was deciding what exactly constitutes a film trilogy. In our case, it's a set of three films that share a continuous story, character, or theme. This means that independent trilogies like "Iron Man" and "Annabelle" within an existing franchise count, but trilogies that are continued years later like "Bourne" or "Pirates of the Caribbean" don't.We then took 70 of the highest domestically grossing trilogies in the US and calculated each film's average Rotten Tomatoes score based on both critic and audience ratings to get a more accurate depiction. The list includes the obvious big hitters like "The Godfather" and "The Karate Kid," as well as a few unexpected gems like Ice Cube's "Barbershop" trilogy.Eddie: Ricky?Ricky: What, what?Eddie: What the hell do you think you're doing over there?Ricky: Hey, look, I'm just trying to get him clean like them Gillette commercials.Narrator: Average out all the scores for first, second, and third film, put them on a chart, and you get something like this. The first film was the obvious winner, with an average score of 71, followed by the sequel at 58, and threequels at 52. Count them all up, and 64% of trilogies had their threequel as their worst film.So, why are threequels almost always the worst ones? There are two factors that come into play here: formula and necessity.The reason why film trilogies have been around for so long is that they're a really great structure to tell a long story, with each film serving as a beginning, a middle, and an end. This also means that each film should serve a very specific purpose.No matter the genre, the first film always serves as an origin story that introduces us to our heroes and the world they live in. That's why successful first movies usually fit into one of two categories. One, adapted materials from an existing body of work, like "The Silence of the Lambs" or the "Star Trek" reboot, that accurately capture the essence of the original source material, or, two, fresh, original IPs, like "The Matrix" and "<keyword id="61596" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Star-Wars">Star Wars</keyword>," that are quite unlike anything the audience has seen.The <keyword id="371763" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="sequels">sequels</keyword> always tend to enjoy more freedom, since their characters and worlds are already established for them. For this reason, the second film is all about heroes facing the greatest challenge they've faced yet, whether it be iconic villains or a battle that just seems impossible to win.This is where the problem with threequels comes in. There isn't really a formula for a successful threequel, at least not yet. And while sequels can usually stand on their own and focus on telling a good story...Bernie: Morning, partner.Narrator: Threequels have a lot more to accomplish. They not only have to tell a great story that tops the films before it, but they also need to tie every loose end and somehow bring a satisfying conclusion to the saga in almost exactly the same length as the other films. Studios often try to solve this problem with a bigger budget to visually raise the stakes. But it often just comes off as repetitive.Some threequels actually repeat previous successes as a strategy, like how "Return of the Jedi" was really a rehash of "A New Hope" but with a bigger Death Star, and "Spider-Man 3," which crams so many villains into one film, just replicates the same plot beats as its previous film. Which brings us to an even bigger problem: necessity.Trilogies suffer the most when they're just not needed at all. Skim through 33 of the worst-rated trilogies, and you could argue that about 85% of those films aren't needed after the first film. After "The Hangover Part II" destroyed everything the first film did right by replicating it, there were no loose ends that needed to be tied up, nor any separate conclusions to be made. But two years later, "The Hangover Part III" still arrived in the theaters with an even more abysmal rating.So, despite all of this, why does Hollywood keep making terrible sequels? The answer seems obvious. Money, right? Well, the box office shows that each movie in a trilogy generally makes less money than the one that came before, but their differences aren't big enough to not warrant a threequel. On average, that third movie still makes four times more than its budget. And as long as we continue to watch them, the problem will likely never be resolved.The curse of threequels is an issue that perhaps best illustrates the problems with how Hollywood approaches a film.Demon: We're back!Narrator: A good film can only be achieved with a good story. The brothers didn't just make a stellar movie to close a franchise (or "phase," as it pertains to the Marvel Cinematic Universe), but made a better movie than the penultimate entry."Avengers: Infinity War," also directed by the Russos, is great because it gives the movie that follows incredible stakes. I mean, the villain turns some of the biggest stars in the franchise into dust. Can't wait to see the next movie!But in the past, that formula has often led to audience anticipation the creatives can't live up to. Look at "Return of the Jedi" after "Empire Strikes Back," "The Godfather Part III" after "Part II," or any "Terminator" movie after "Judgment Day." And even if the closing movie has good qualities, you often say to yourself, "Yeah, but the one before, that was great!"And that's what's so amazing about "Avengers: Endgame" (in theaters Friday): It fulfills everything that was set up in "Infinity War."One of the biggest surprises about "Endgame" is its tone. Coming off the seriousness of "Infinity War," you would think the movie would be a harsh revenge tale, as the existing Avengers try to avenge not only the friends they lost, but also half the population wiped out by Thanos. But in fact, there's a lightheartedness that flows through the movie and never feels out of place. That is a big help since "Endgame" is three hours long.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Disney</div></div></div>And that fun factor comes from how the Avengers think they can win: through time travel.I'm not going to give a lot away about the movie, but as you've probably seen Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in the trailers, you know he's returned from the quantum realm - which is where we saw him last in "Ant-Man and the Wasp" - which means you know from that movie the time-travel angle is out there.It's hard to not have fun with a time-travel plot. That includes figuring out how the time travel works as well as putting a spin on it that makes fun of classic time-travel movies. (Sorry, in the MCU time travel doesn't work like "Back to the Future.") Add a heist aspect - again, not going to get into details - and you have gold.But that doesn't means there isn't drama. Getting back at Thanos has led some of the Avengers to take things pretty hard in their own ways. How it has affected Thor (Chris Hemsworth) leads to some of the funniest moments in the movie.
