Lauren Boebert for example. The Colorado Republican announced on Wednesday that she would vote against what she dubbed the "Swamp Omnibus," slamming the bill as a "monstrosity" that "funds the Green New Deal."That's despite the bill including more than $20 million that she herself had requested for projects across the state's 3rd congressional district, which she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lauren-boebert-district-switch-carpet-bagging-2023-12">recently abandoned</a> to seek reelection in a safer district on the other side of the state.That included $5 million to develop a water reservoir in Wolf Creek, $2.2 million for water infrastructure in Craig, and millions more for highway improvements in the district that she jointly requested with Democratic Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper.Boebert's office did not respond to a request for comment.There's also Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, who secured more than $12 million in earmark funding for his East Tennessee district."Everything that we've asked for, I could defend," Burchett told Business Insider after the vote. "I don't think you can defend some of that stuff that's in there. It's just too much."That included more than $2.3 million for a health screening program for the University of Tennessee Medical Center, $2 million for an affordable housing project in Knoxville, and more than $2 million to establish a Healthcare Supply Chain Data Engineering Center at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, a small town on the Kentucky border.Yet Burchett was among the Republicans who voted against the bill, which included the entirety of his earmarks. These 40 House Republicans voted against millions of dollars in federal funding that they secured for their districts 

A wind-swept wildfire ripped through the South Korean coastal city of <keyword id="210586" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gangneung" source="Orion">Gangneung</keyword> on Tuesday, destroying about 100 homes and forcing hundreds of residents and tourists to evacuate. From early Tuesday, typhoon-class strong winds with an instantaneous maximum speed reaching 30 metres per second blew over Gangneung, 168 km east of Seoul, and other <keyword id="127185" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="east-coast" source="Orion">east coast</keyword> areas of Gangwon province. The fire was rapidly spreading to the district's residential areas due to gusty winds, burning about 100 houses so far, according to the city's fire officials. No casualties have been reported yet. The city government sent a disaster warning message to the fire-stricken district's residents, asking them to evacuate to community service centres or to the Gangneung Ice Arena. Some tourists staying in nearby accommodations were also evacuated to safe places in case there is an emergency. The fire authorities raised their response posture to the highest level and mobilised more than 300 firefighters, six helicopters and 200 fire trucks, though their firefighting efforts were hampered by strong winds. Wind-swept wildfires destroy 100 homes in South Korea's Gangneung

New <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword>, The Delhi government has marked nearly 3,000 <keyword id="8959677" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="containment-zones">containment zones</keyword> since November 1 to contain the spread of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> during its third surge in the national capital taking the total number of containment zones to 6,292. The government has sealed 2,933 localities between November 1 and December 7 while 2,361 new containment zones were marked between November 5 and December 5 -- highest in a month since the Covid <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword> broke out earlier this year, as per the data accessed from the Delhi government. With 1,586 containment zones, <keyword id="5612990" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Southwest-District">Southwest district</keyword> of Delhi tops the list of areas with most number of containment zones. The other areas that have a large number of containment zones include Raj Nagar, Mahavir Enclave, Sultanpur, Munirka and Mohan Garden, apart from some areas in Najafgarh, Dwarka and Uttam Nagar. The Southwest region was followed by the South district with 864 containment zones while the lowest number was recorded in <keyword id="10395707" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-east-district">the East district</keyword> with 198 zones. On an average, the government marked record 78 fresh containment zones between November 5 and December 5. The containment zones are distributed among Delhi's 11 districts - Southwest (1,586), South (864), West (537), New Delhi (284), Central (639), Southeast (824), Northwest (441), Shahdara (229), North (236), East (198) and Northeast (207). Besides, the month between November 5 and December 5 saw 41 per cent more containment zones than its previous month. Between October 5 and November 5, only 977 new containment zones were marked, while 1,731 new containment zones were marked between September 5 and October 5. After battling the third surge with lack of healthcare facilities, and huge number of daily new infections and fatalities in November, December arrived as a relief for Delhi. The number of daily cases and the positivity rate has gone down drastically with the start of the month. While the daily new cases have fallen under 5,000, the positivity rate is also plunging below 4 per cent for the last many days. A state health department official attributed the falling numbers of cases to the containment zones. "It helped in checking the infection spread since the micro-containment zones are easier to monitor. All individuals living within a containment zone are tested irrespective of whether they are symptomatic or asymptomatic," the official added. However, Dr RK Gupta, member, Delhi Covid Committee constituted by the Kejriwal government opined that the large creation of the containment zones had negligible impact in controlling the infection. "There is a little applicability of the containment zones when the whole population is moving one place from another without any restriction whatsoever. The containment zones are meaningless when the movement is not restricted," he said. "One cannot trace the contacts of a person found infected in a containment zone if the population living under is roaming freely," Gupta added. 3,000 containment zones marked in Delhi since November — the highest in a month since COVID-19 outbreak this year

Rainfall ranging from 11.5 cm to 24 cm was recorded in more than 100 places in the state, primarily in East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam, <keyword id="6369453" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="vizianagaram">Vizianagaram</keyword>, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts. Heavy rains lash Andhra Pradesh as deep depression crosses coast

Mizoram's <keyword id="852801" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aizawl-district">Aizawl district</keyword> has reported the highest age-adjusted cancer incidence rate among males in the country for five years from 2012, a study has found. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) 2012-2016 report, <keyword id="6417784" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aizawl">Aizawl</keyword> district has recorded the highest age-adjusted incidence rates among males with 269.4 cancer cases per one lakh population. Aizawl is followed by <keyword id="1986245" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="East-Khasi-Hills-District">East Khasi Hills district</keyword> of Meghalaya and Kamrup (Metro) in Assam which reported 227.9 and 213 cancer cases per one lakh population, respectively. With 219.8 cancer cases per one lakh population, Papumpare district in Arunachal Pradesh has recorded the highest incidence rate among women, followed by Aizawl district with 214.1 cancer cases per one lakh population among females, the report which was released on Tuesday said. Mizoram as a whole recorded 207 and 172.3 cancer cases of all sites per one lakh population among men and women, respectively. In Asia, Aizawl district has the highest incidence rate of lung cancer in females and also the highest incident rate of stomach cancer in males when compared with Non-Asian countries, the study also showed. Aizawl district also topped in colon cancer in the country among males and females. The report said that the total number of people diagnosed with cancer cases in Mizoram during 2012-2016 was 8,059, including 3,736 females while 4,080 cancer cases were registered in Aizawl district alone during the same period. In Mizoram, 1 out of every 5 persons (both males and females) has the risk of developing cancer in the age group of 0-74 years. In Aizawl district, 1 of every 4 males and 1 of every 5 females are likely to develop any cancer site in the age group of 0-74 years. The NCRP also said that the NE region has the highest incidence rate in cancers of oropharynx, oesophagus, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, stomach, colorectal, liver, gallbladder, larynx, lung, cervix uteri and ovary. The highest incidences of tobacco-related cancers in the country was also reported from the northeast. East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya had the highest proportion of tobacco cancer with 70.4 per cent in men and 46.5 per cent in women. As for Mizoram, the proportion of tobacco related cancer for men was 43.3 per cent and 22.1 for women. Meanwhile, mission director of <keyword id="123154" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Health-Mission">National Health Mission</keyword> (NHM), Dr Eric Zomawia attributed the high incidence rate of cancer in Mizoram to use of tobacco, consumption of smoked meats and fermented foods, and unhealthy lifestyle. He said that the government is making massive efforts to check the high incidence rate of cancer in the state He told that the state government has implemented National Programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetes, <keyword id="76316" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cardiovascular-diseases">Cardiovascular Diseases</keyword> and Stroke (NPCDCS) under NHM as per which screening of patients of three cancers sites from 30 years has been launched all over the state since the past two years. Mizoram has one cancer hospital in Aizawl's Zemabawk locality and a day care cancer clinic at Lunglei civil hospital in the southern part of the state. According to Zomawia, the government is making an effort to upgrade Zemabawk cancer hospital to Tertiary care cancer centre (TCCC). He also said that the state government will also set up a Rs 500 crore cancer speciality hospital in Aizawl. Mizoram's Aizawl district recorded highest cancer cases in India

As the water level crossed 60 feet at Bhadrachalam in neighbouring Telanagna, the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram near Rajamahendravaram received 18.27 lakh cusecs by noon on Monday. Authorities are discharging all the flood water into the Bay of Bengal as the third warning signal is due to be raised. The second warning is now continuing at Dowaleswaram, the State Disaster Management Authority said. Over 55 villages in West Godavari district and about 100 in East Godavari district remain marooned or inundated due to the deluge. In East Godavari, close to 6,000 people were evacuated to safety from the flood-hit villages and lodged in relief camps. In West Godavari, too, about 2,000 people were shifted to relief camps. The tributaries of Godavari like Goutami, Vasishta and Vynateya are also in spate. Power supply to the affected villages has been cut as a precautionary measure. Teams of SDRF and NDRF have been moved to the flood- hit villages with boats and other equipment to carry out rescue and relief operations, the SDMA said. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy reviewed the situation with the officials concerned and directed them to undertake relief measures on a war footing. Bhubaneswar, As many as 10 NDRF teams and 15 ODRAF units have been pre-positioned in the coastal districts of Odisha to meet any eventuality due to the cyclone Amphan, said an official on Sunday. 20 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), 17 teams of <keyword id="119446" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Response-Force">National Disaster Response Force</keyword> (NDRF) and 335 units of Fire and Disaster Management are in readiness to be pressed into service. While 10 NDRF teams and 15 ODRAF units have been pre-positioned in 6 coastal and 4 nearby districts, further deployment will be planned after getting information from the IMD about the path of the cyclone, said Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena. He said concerned departments and 12 coastal and adjoining districts-Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, <keyword id="72687" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jagatsinghpur">Jagatsinghpur</keyword>, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj-have been advised to undertake required preparedness measures to effectively handle the disaster. Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts have been instructed to remain fully prepared, said the SRC. Odisha is likely to receive heavy rain under the influence of severe cyclonic storm Amphan, which is predicted to skirt away from the northern coast of the state and make landfall between <keyword id="6357783" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-bengal">West Bengal</keyword> and Bangladesh. According to the IMD, rainfall will commence in Odisha from May 18 with heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over the district of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara. Jena said the district collectors have been asked to plan for evacuation people living in vulnerable areas to safer places, if needed. Besides, the officials have been directed to prepare plan for early restoration of affected road communication, drinking water, electricity, infrastructure and an uninterrupted power supply to hospitals. As preparedness measure for possible cyclone, 567 cyclone shelters and 7000 pucca buildings have been identified to accommodate about 11 lakh people. In view of cyclone Amphan, Bhubaneswar-New Delhi-Bhubaneswar AC special train starting from Bhubaneswar from 19th to 22nd May and starting from New Delhi from 18th to 21st May will run on diverted route via Bhubaneswar-Angul-Sambalpur City-Jharsuguda-Rourkela-Tata bypassing Bhadrak-Balasore-Hijli route. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) said passengers going from and coming to Baleswar/Hijli (Kharagpur) will not get service of this train for 4 days.
