Indian textile exports to remain strong amid global shifts; FTA negotiations with EU to offer growth opportunities

Despite unfavourable economic conditions in major markets such as the European Union (EU), the US, and West Asian nations, Indian <keyword id="21353395" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="textile-exports" source="keywords">textile exports</keyword> grew by 9.59 per cent compared to the previous year in May 2024, the Confederation of <keyword id="22064995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-textile" source="keywords">Indian Textile</keyword> Industry (CITI) said in a report. Simultaneously, <keyword id="22064997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-apparel-exports" source="keywords">Indian apparel exports</keyword> saw a growth of 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI in its report highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country's overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. This was a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.2 per cent, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on June 14. The analysis noted that during Apr -May' 24, Indian textile exports registered a growth of 6.04 per cent over the previous year, while apparel exports registered a growth of 4.46 per cent during the same time period. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during April-May 2024 saw a surge of 5.34 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The recently released export data revealed that sectors such as electronic goods, drugs and pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics &amp; linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs made-ups ( textiles manufactured), handloom products, etc., man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. performed well in the exports from the country. Other merchandise products, such as meat, dairy and poultry products, mica, coal and other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds; and fruits and vegetables, did well too. On Friday, AshwKumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted that a positive trajectory was seen in May 2024, driven by robust order bookings. Among the top ten export markets for India were the US, UAE, Netherlands, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France. Considerably, in these markets, the exports registered a double-digit growth rate. Breaking down export data released yesterday, the merchandise exports witnessed a 9.1 per cent rise to USD 38.13 billion, while service exports climbed by 11.7 per cent, reaching USD 30.16 billion. Indian textile exports surge by 9.59% in May despite global economic challenges

New Delhi: The Indian garment and knitted fabric sector is witnessing a bit of uncertainty due to the <keyword id="22498521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bangladesh-crisis" source="keywords">Bangladesh crisis</keyword>, Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said on Saturday, expressing hope that the interim government there will settle things "sooner rather than later." Interacting with the media on the sidelines of customary post Budget address to the central board of <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>, she said efforts are being taken to ensure that borders with the neighbouring country are safe. With regard to Indian investments, she said, the textile industry particularly from Tamil Nadu has made investments there in good faith and they have done well having gone there. "The exports from <keyword id="19919639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangladesh" source="keywords">Bangladesh</keyword> also increased because of the duty and quota liberal approach that we have towards low-income countries. They (Indian garment industry based in Bangladesh) could even export to India." Particularly, she said, the garment and knitted fabric sector is seeing a bit of uncertainty because of the crisis in the neighbouring country. "I hope that the investments are all safe... it's too early for me to see what kind of an impact this situation in Bangladesh will have on our economy. I hope that the interim government will settle things sooner rather than later so that both the people of Bangladesh and India can get back to normalcy," she said. Earlier this week, Bangladesh plunged into a political crisis when Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister and fled the country. Soon after Parliament was dissolved leading to the creation of an interim government. The 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on Thursday took oath as the head of an interim government, replacing Sheikh Hasina who abruptly resigned and fled to India leaving the country in turmoil following deadly protests against her government over a controversial quota system in jobs. On Friday, Bangladesh's interim leader Yunus announced the portfolios of his 16-member council of advisors and named a former top diplomat to head the foreign ministry. The Nobel laureate's first task is to bring stability to Bangladesh after he responded to a call by student protesters for him to temporarily lead the country following weeks of deadly anti-government demonstrations against the government led by Sheikh Hasina.

Garment sector facing uncertainty due to Bangladesh crisis, normalcy may return soon: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

<ul><li>The hospitality sector saw 23 <keyword id="142429" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-rating" source="Orion">credit rating</keyword> upgrades, with no downgrades at all in FY24, says ICRA.</li><li>Auto, financial sector, power, realty and transport infrastructure also saw several upgrades.</li><li>Agriculture, chemicals, construction and apparel sectors saw the most downgrades. </li></ul> The fiscal year of FY24 continued the ‘upgrade momentum’ that was set into motion in FY22, said the credit rating agency ICRA. Two entities had been upgraded for every entity downgraded during the year, the rating agency said in a report released on Monday. The biggest winner for the year is the hospitality sector — with 23 upgrades and an upgrade rate of 37%. And, there were no downgrades at all. ICRA maintains a positive outlook on the Hospitality sector for FY2025 as well. The other sectors which saw the most number of upgrades include auto and auto components, finance, power, realty and transport infrastructure. On the other hand, sectors which saw the most number of downgrades are — agricultural food and other products, chemicals and petrochemicals, construction, textiles and apparel. Company-specific factors While entities in aviation, hospitality, auto &amp; auto components, and banks gained from the industry tailwinds in FY24 – that’s not the only factor behind most upgrades. “A large majority of rating upgrades were driven by company-specific factors such as expansion in market share or order book, improvement in the cost structure, reduction in project risk, or fresh equity infusion that strengthened the balance sheet,” says K Ravichandran, chief rating officer at ICRA said. Overall, credit profiles continued to improve last year. The number of instances of defaults dipped to five in FY24, compared with 22 in FY23 and 42 in FY22. “Corporate India has shown a high resilience to withstanding the rise in borrowing costs over the past two years and is seen to have the capacity to bear the current level of interest rates before the rate cut cycle likely begins in the latter part of the year,” said Ravichandran. Banks &amp; NBFC asset profiles at decadal best The financial sector has also been one of the best-performing sectors for the year in terms of credit profile. It saw an upgrade rate of 13%, next only to auto. Its downgrade ratio is also low at 2%. “The asset quality of banks and NBFCs has also been at its decadal best with the profitability and the capitalisation indicators expected to remain healthy in the near term. The series of proactive actions taken by the regulators (RBI and SEBI) in recent years would work to further strengthen the financial system and the capital markets,” opines Ravichandran. He, however, added that the key downside factors that could derail progress in multiple sectors are the monsoons and complicated geopolitical landscape. Two wars, the Red Sea crisis and sluggish exports had been weighing on India in FY24. “Yet, these did not feel heavier as domestic consumption demand across several sectors, government spending on public infrastructure, and healthy balance sheets lent support to the credit profiles of entities,” says ICRA. In FY25, the rating agency expects India’s GDP to expand by 6.5%, with the average retail inflation estimated to be moderate at 4.6%.

New Delhi, India's <keyword id="413762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-sector-growth" source="Orion">manufacturing sector growth</keyword> fell to an 18-month low in December amid softer increase in factory orders and output, despite minimal inflation, a monthly survey said on Wednesday. The <keyword id="20046281" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hsbc-india-manufacturing-pmi-survey" source="Orion">HSBC India Manufacturing PMI survey</keyword>, conducted by S&amp;P Global, showed that there were softer, albeit sharp, increase in factory orders and output, while business confidence towards the year-ahead outlook strengthened. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing <keyword id="726966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Purchasing-Managers-Index" source="Orion">Purchasing Managers' Index</keyword> (PMI) fell from 56 in November to an 18-month low of 54.9 in December. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. The HSBC India Manufacturing PMI is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in a panel of around 400 manufacturers. "India's manufacturing sector continued to expand in December, although at a softer pace, following an uptick in the previous month. Growth of both output and new orders softened, but on the other hand, the future output index rose since November," said Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC. Despite a loss of growth momentum, the sector still expanded strongly in December. New business gains, favourable market conditions, fairs and expositions collectively induced another sharp increase in manufacturing production during December, according to panellists. The December data showed a 21st consecutive increase in international order receipts at goods producers in India. "Companies noted gains from clients in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. New export sales expanded at a moderate pace that was the joint-slowest in eight months," the survey noted. On the prices front, input costs rose at the second-slowest rate in nearly three-and-a-half years and charge inflation softened to a nine-month low. Among the items reported to have been up in price were chemicals, paper and textiles. Little-changed from November, however, the rate of inflation was negligible by historical standards and was the second-weakest in just under three-and-a-half years, as per the survey. "Rates of increase in input and output prices were broadly unchanged," Bhandari added. HSBC India PMI data showed a general lack of pressure on the capacity of manufacturers at the end of the third fiscal quarter. Subsequently, employment was largely stable in December. When assessing the year-ahead outlook for production, Indian manufacturers were at their most upbeat for three months. Anecdotal evidence highlighted advertising, better customer relations and new enquiries as the main factors boosting business confidence in December, the survey said.

India's manufacturing sector growth falls to 18-month low in December on softer rise in orders, output

New Delhi [India], November 13 (ANI): <keyword id="178886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-manufacturing" source="Orion">Indian manufacturing</keyword> has accelerated through the second quarter of 2023-24 and is likely to continue for the subsequent quarters of the financial year 2023-24, notwithstanding the slowdown in developed nations, industry body <keyword id="19481819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ficcis-latest-quarterly" source="Orion">FICCI's latest quarterly</keyword> survey revealed. The industry body's latest quarterly survey assessed the performance and sentiments of manufacturers for the July-September 2023-24 quarter for ten major sectors -- automotive and auto components, capital goods and construction equipment, cement, chemicals fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, electronics and white goods, machine tools, metal and metal products, textiles, apparels and technical textiles, paper, and miscellaneous. It sought responses from over 380 manufacturing units from both the large and SME segments with a combined annual turnover of over Rs 4.88 lakh crores. The existing average capacity utilization in the Indian manufacturing sector is around 74 per cent, slightly higher than the 73 per cent recorded during the previous quarters. The future <keyword id="628648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-outlook" source="Orion">investment outlook</keyword> has also improved as compared to the previous quarter as over 57 per cent of respondents reported plans for investments and expansions in the coming six months. This is also a slight improvement over the previous survey. In terms of major constraints, demand is a limiting factor to realise the true potential of the manufacturing sector in India, with over 40 per cent of respondents highlighting this as a significant constraint. "Whether it is domestic demand or exports, this remains a major limiting factor. Some other constraints, though not major ones are high raw material prices, increased cost of finance, logistics, and other supply chain disruptions are some of the major constraints which are affecting expansion plans of the respondents," finds the FICCI survey. The table below gives the average capacity utilization for various sub-sectors of manufacturing: On the export front, performance seems to be better than in previous quarters as over 48 per cent of the respondents reported higher exports in July-September 2023-24 as compared to 33 per cent in Q1 2023-24. "However, further improvement in export demand is required in the light of the country's growth aspiration," FICCI said. Further, the hiring outlook, according to the survey, looks stable with around 38 per cent of the respondents looking at hiring additional workforce in the next three months. "Most sectors have sufficient labour force engaged in their operations and are not facing a shortage of labour at factories. While 82 per cent of our respondents mentioned that they do not have any issues with workforce availability, the remaining 18 per cent feel that there is still a lack of skilled workforce available in their sector," FICCI noted. Indian manufacturing sector growth expected to continue: FICCI survey

<ul><li>Most clothing <keyword id="44446" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retailers" source="Orion">retailers</keyword> say that this wedding season saw no growth in sales, while many reported a drop. </li><li>Most of them blame the economic slowdown, while others attribute it to high prices, and fewer auspicious dates. </li><li><keyword id="222658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retailers-association" source="Orion">Retailers Association</keyword> of India too says that sales across categories has moderated, due to the high base effect in the previous year that saw extraordinary growth. </li></ul>The economic slowdown seems to be taking a toll on one of India’s most vibrant spending seasons — that of the big fat Indian weddings. This year, 83% of respondents of a survey by Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) said there has been absolutely ‘no growth’ as compared to the wedding season of 2022. Also, 40% of them said that there has been a drop in sales to the tune of 10-25% over the previous year. The wedding season generally runs from April to June. Indian brides seem to be going austere as a large majority of clothing retailers said that the economically priced products fared better than the more expensive varieties. “Lighter embroideries and pastel colours were more in demand as per the survey results,” says CMAI. “Currently the market is seeing a fairly significant slowdown, which has been caused by the overall inflationary conditions in the market. The first quarter of the current financial year is likely to be disappointing for the industry, and the impact is being felt by both the value as well as the upper segments of consumers,” said Rajesh Masand, president of CMAI. More than 60% of the respondents attributed the weak performance to the general economic slowdown. While 14% of them attributed it to high prices, 13% believe that the fewer number of auspicious dates as compared to the previous season contributed to the drop. The high base effect A survey by Retailers Association of India (RAI) said that retailers across categories saw a modest growth of 7% in the month of May compared with last year. Jewellery and apparel showed moderate growth at 9%. “As consumers are now getting into their normal business routines, we are witnessing moderate growth over previous year. However, we are also aware that April and May months in 2022 witnessed extraordinary growth at 23% and 24%, respectively, compared to pre-pandemic periods (April 2019 and May 2019),” said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive officer, RAI. The apparel industry has been growing at a fairly consistent rate of 8-10% per annum, said CMAI. The industry saw a revival in 2022 as consumers went back to the physical stores and markets – and 2022-23 is estimated to have seen growth of 15-20%. “However, with the costs of raw materials as well as overall cost of production having gone up substantially, this growth has been entirely price-led, and the volumes would still be below the previous year by 3-5%,” said CMAI. Women go West, men go Indian The apparel sector is also seeing a shift in trends due to higher urbanisation of India. “Exposure to western culture with accessibility to content over social media platforms is influencing the dressing patterns and fashion sense amongst the youth, which is causing a gradual shift from traditional clothing to western clothing, especially in the women’s wear segment,” Rahul Mehta, chief mentor at CMAI. Mehta, however, added that the men’s wear segment is seeing some sort of a ‘return to tradition’ — as more men are seeking to go traditional during festivals and weddings. The share price of companies in the sector — Go Fashion, Raymond and Vedant Fashions, which owns the Manyavar brand – have come off their monthly highs. Vedant fell 6% as compared to last week. Shares of Go Fashion – which is into premium leggings and such apparel — remained flat this week, as did the shares of premium clothing brand Raymond. Their success hinges on the performance of those particular themes, making them more vulnerable to market fluctuations and industry-specific challenges.

New fund alert: 'Axis India Manufacturing Fund'

A slowdown in 2023 in advanced economies, especially the US and the eurozone, is expected to make <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="23820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="footwear" source="Orion">footwear</keyword> and leather products export trade vulnerable, said <keyword id="183985" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="crisil-ratings" source="Orion">Crisil Ratings</keyword>. "Domestic labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, footwear, and leather depend significantly on these two regions, making them particularly vulnerable to a slowdown in these economies," it said in a report titled 'The Slowdown Shadow'. It said since these regions being two of India's largest export destinations, a slowdown in their economies would lower demand for Indian <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword>. Many economists and global institutions earlier projected to a global slowdown in 2023, as the impact of continued monetary policy tightening across major economies manifests. Raising interest rates typically cools demand in the economy and thus helps in managing inflation, but it also has the potential to trigger a slowdown in overall economic activities. "Advanced economies are expected to bear the brunt as they aggressively pursued monetary tightening in 2022," <keyword id="6359483" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crisil" source="Orion">Crisil</keyword> said. The forecast of a global slowdown, Crisil said, is worrisome because India's growth cycles have become highly synchronised with those of advanced economies over the years. "The most important and direct impact of this will be reduced demand for Indian goods abroad. The US and European Union (EU) are two of the largest destinations, accounting for 18 per cent and 15.4 per cent, respectively, of India's merchandise exports in fiscal 2022," it added. It also raised concerns about India's textile exports. "It is noteworthy that labour-intensive categories such as leather articles, footwear, and textiles have the highest export dependence on these advanced economies," the report added.

Alok Industries, Arvind, Deepak Spinners, Trident gain on PLI for textiles sector, analysts expect the rally to continue

<ul><li>India’s investments into <keyword id="3347616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fixed-assets" source="Orion">fixed assets</keyword> has hit a decadal high in the fourth quarter of FY23. </li><li>In the last quarter of FY23, government capex was up ove 20% compared to the same period a year before. Private entities too will follow suit, says Nirmal Bang. </li><li>Improving affordability and rising loan tenures could possibly sustain a multi-year residential real estate cycle. </li></ul>India’s investments into fixed assets hit a decadal high in the fourth quarter of FY23. Measured in terms of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) — which is investments of producers in fixed assets — it’s now at a high of 35.3% of India’s gross domestic product (GDP), as per a research report by Nirmal Bang. The trigger to this high is the Indian government raising its spending. In the last quarter of FY23, its capex was up by 22.9% YoY. Going ahead, the research firm believes that private entities too will go in for capacity expansion —- as capacity utilization of industries is now hovering between 74-75% in the last one year on an average. “Private capex announcements in FY23 more than doubled from pre-pandemic levels and are running ahead of the central and state governments,” said a Nirmal Bang report named India Capex Meter. Overall, new capex crossed the pre-pandemic peak and stood at around ₹12 lakh crore tn in 4QFY23, according to data from CMIE. Multi-year residential real estate cycle Real mortgage rates have risen over the past year, but a structural downtrend persists. The report finds that the Indian household capex has held on, aiding growth in the housing sector. While it did flatten out recently due to rising interest rates, growth in housing credit could possibly sustain marginally above system credit growth, Nirmal Bang believes. “This, along with improving affordability and rising loan tenures could possibly sustain a multi- year residential real estate cycle,” it adds. For corporates, however, real interest rates have recently turned slightly adverse, rising above their long-term trend. This however is unlikely to be a major deterrent in the near term since the initial leg of private capex recovery is unlikely to be bank funded. Capital goods sector Most of the capex indicators have remained in positive territory over the past year, the most significant being the capital goods sector – that builds industries. “While the central government’s persistent capex focus provided the initial thrust, indicators such as capital goods production and capital goods imports too have sustained in the positive territory over the past year,” the report said. Yet another indicator, that’s – the profitability of the capital goods sector has also improved. “Operating profitability of BSE Capital Goods companies has sustained in the positive territory despite persistent pressure on margins. Over the past two quarters, operating profitability of the BSE Capital Goods companies has grown by over 15% YoY,” said Nirmal Bang. There’s more steam left? State and central governments have been steadily spending on building road projects. The road construction has been robust, but the nature of investment into the sector seems to be changing. While state and central governments seem to be slowing down, the <keyword id="53482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-sector" source="Orion">private sector</keyword> is more than making up for it, with project announcements. Bank credit to the sector is also on-point. “Bank credit to the infrastructure sector has seen some sluggishness recently, but bank credit to the roads sector, which is the key beneficiary of government capex, seems to be holding up,” the report said. Manufacturing back to pre-Covid levels Going by the investment proposals, there seems to be a broad-based capex recovery, the research report says. In 4QFY23, investments in the manufacturing sector were about 48% above the pre-Covid level. “Sectors that saw recovery were chemicals, metals, machinery and miscellaneous manufacturing. Investments in food &amp; agro-based products remained below the pre-pandemic level,” said Nirmal Bang. The top sector in terms of investment proposals by value is metals. It is followed by sectors such as sugar, transportation, textiles, drugs &amp; pharmaceuticals, chemicals and fermentation-based pharmaceuticals. Even sectors such as leather are seeing some resurgence, aided by China +1 strategies. The share of sectors like electrical equipment is seen moderating as some of the early Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes get implemented. On the other hand, proposals from sectors like food processing and textiles are seen rising.

Indian private sector to take a cue from government and raise investments in fixed assets

Bhubaneswar, Jul 11 () In a bid to attract investments in the textile and apparel manufacturing sector, the Odisha government has said it has "world-class" infrastructure facilities, strong logistics base and skilled manpower required for such units to flourish. Industries Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra, while addressing the 'Invest India Exclusive Investment Forum for Textiles and Apparel Sector' event on Friday, highlighted Odisha's unique competitive advantages in the textiles and apparel sector. "Textile and apparel manufacturing is one of the focus sectors of the Odisha government and several firms have already set up their units in the state," he said. The abundant skilled workforce in the state is available at competitive wage rates, Mishra said. Exports and imports can be facilitated through Paradip, Dhamra and Gopalpur ports, he said. Industries Department Secretary Hemant Sharma said new infrastructure facilities are being developed in the state, including textiles parks in Bhadrak and Dhamra. Millions of blue collar employees have lost their livelihood as plants shutdowns or production cuts. But just as many if not more artists and artisans are caught in the economic spiral with less or no spotlight. And it is not merely slowdown, but weather and other social factors are adding to the plight of the millions of India’s unorganised workers. These artists who are hurt the most are those who make ₹10,000 per month or less. And a few desperate of them have resorted to suicides, since few artists have prospects outside their chosen area. Rains sweep away profits from sculptors Ideally, this month Indian idol makers should be rolling in cash as Ganapati idol sales hit a high. But, they are now lamenting over losses and pain, as heavy in Maharashtra in Sangli and Kolhapur districts have<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/maharashtra-ganpati-idolmakers-reel-under-heavy-losses-after-rain-flooding-5908852/"> swept away their</a> raw material, and annual earnings. Due to rains, the stock of idols made of plaster of paris has also deteriorated. Some have developed cracks while others rotting bases and others are bare damp leaving those who have worked all around the year, penniless. Lenders’ fury hits diamond polishers The story of artisans who shine diamonds is even worse. As US markets have lost sheen, the Indian industry is depressed. Multiple<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/nirav-modi-arrested-in-london/articleshow/68496650.cms"> scams in the sector</a> right from Nirav Modi to Mehul Choksi has also resulted in shutdowns. Moreso, the banking sector which is hurt by diamond merchants is also refusing a lifeline, deepening the crisis. As many as 60,000 workers are jobless since 2018. According to Gujarat<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gujarats-diamond-industry-loses-sheen-as-60000-turn-jobless-and-a-few-resort-to-suicides/articleshow/70888125.cms"> Diamond Workers Union</a>, as many as ten artisans have already committed suicide. More are in trouble as a large number of units in this small and medium sized industries, are working on a single shift. Spoke in the spinning wheel As many as 30 million Indian weavers and powerloom workers have already lost their jobs, thanks to government policies and the effect of slowdown. This constitutes to a third<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/a-third-of-indias-textile-workers-30-million-lost-their-jobs-and-more-could-go/articleshow/70781257.cms"> of all textile workers</a> in India. Over 600 spinning wheels have shut down leaving 200,000 unemployed. Half of these shutdown took place in the textile hub of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, which paint a grim picture of the economy. These job losses will affect many families as a large chunk of Indian textile workers are women. Their earnings support families, which now have nothing to fall back on.
