The company says these insights have helped it identify innovative antiaging solutions. It also says it has used an AI platform to optimize product formulas to minimize the number of lab tests needed.<h2>Monitoring perpetual systems</h2><div type="image" title="A drone for overhead line inspection is in the Eon TestingLab." height="682" width="1024" msid="111691358" hostid="261" sizebytes="38158"></div>Application: Essential services require 24/7 oversight and immediate identification of breakdowns. AI-enabled systems can conduct consistent oversight and spot weaknesses.Example: E.ON, a German utility company, uses AI to maintain its electricity infrastructure. It deploys semi-automated drones to monitor its power-transmission systems. AI software analyzes the drone images to assess whether any components, such as electrical cables and transmission towers, are defective.The company is also testing an AI solution to predict when parts of its energy infrastructure, such as a cable, might need repairs. Executives hope that by detecting failures before they occur, they can prevent disruption. AI can be deployed to calibrate the right response.Example: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.deere.com/en/sprayers/see-spray-ultimate/">John Deere</a>, the maker of agriculture equipment, uses AI in its See &amp; Spray product to help farmers reduce herbicide use and increase crop yields.Crops compete with weeds for water, nutrients, and sunlight. In the past, farmers sprayed whole fields with herbicide to manage weeds. This meant they also sprayed crops and barren soil, wasting valuable resources and time.The company uses computer vision and machine learning to detect individual weeds and apply herbicide only where it's needed. It said this has reduced herbicide use by up to two-thirds.A sprayer mounted on a tractor uses cameras and AI to identify a weed's position as the tractor moves across a field. Suffolk Technologies Group, a venture-capital group associated with the construction company, partnered with the startup NewMetrix to develop an AI-based safety tool. The team digitized incident data and developed a predictive model.A key component was tracking "safety observations" — the term used for when the team is looking for circumstances that are not in line with safety protocols, such as someone not wearing appropriate protective clothing.The data indicated that the frequency of safety observations was correlated with the total number of on-site safety incidents. As a result of this insight, the team directed the workers to conduct safety observations based on a formula derived from the total number of job hours worked.The data-driven strategy was effective. Suffolk said that after implementing the approach, it saw a 25% improvement in the total recordable incident rate during the past fiscal year."Over the course of the last few years since we've provided more focus on observations, we've seen an overall downward trend closer to 60% in terms of incident rates," a Suffolk spokesperson told BI.<h2>Complying with regulations</h2><div type="image" title="A plate of cubed cheese garnished with herbs and an olive" height="2568" width="3424" msid="111691368" hostid="261" sizebytes="372784"></div>Application: Many companies are sitting on years' worth of valuable product-related data they don't have the time or resources to mine for insights. AI can analyze this data and provide direction to improve decision-making.Example: Tetra Pak, a Swiss food-packaging and -processing company, works with cheesemakers at several stages of the production process. Cheesemakers must meet certain requirements set out by the US Food and Drug Administration, such as those for moisture and fat content. The company uses AI to create optimal cheese recipes that meet these standards.Todd Stertz, a manager for cheese and powders at Tetra Pak, said that while many cheese plants had "vast amounts of historical data," the cheesemakers "did not always use it to the maximum potential." For instance, the data could give insight into how certain manufacturing conditions in the past had affected things like cheese moisture."The vast amount of data is not easy for a human to digest," Stertz said. "It takes a long time to come up with a decision afterwards."

Sweden is showing innovations by Swedish companies in line with ‘Make in India’ initiative

In 1997, <keyword id="3247742" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bi">Jeff Bi</keyword> was an executive at Swedish-owned packaging company Tetra Pak when his 6-year-old son Hansen came home from school one day and asked him, "Dad, why are you still using trees to make products at work? It's bad for the environment." 
 
 
 Bi was not a decision-maker in the company and had no say in what <keyword id="681455" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Packaging-materials">packaging materials</keyword> were being used, but he wanted to set a good example for his son. He lobbied hard, asking why the company didn't certify its fiber source, but the conversations didn't go very far. Most people in the company wanted to know whether it would help the bottomline or not, and Bi found many of his ideas went into the wastebasket. 
 
"When I started my own business, Greatview, I needed to put my money where my mouth was," says Bi, a <a href="http://www.ypo.org/">Young Presidents’ Organization</a> member since 2008. "Although we lost money in the beginning, we started to certify our fiber source. It was the right thing to do." 
 
The aseptic packaging business is primarily used for packaging dairy, juice and tea products and is a hotly contested industry in China. Many competitors saw no reason to change their supply chain to ensure that the fiber pulp they received for manufacturing was from a sustainable source. It was a risk that paid off for Bi. In 2013, Greatview reached a landmark 10-billion carton sales, despite milk shortages in China that resulted in less demand. 
 China's economic growth during the last decade is well documented and its exports are so prevalent that it is hard to believe that a company the size of Greatview actually imports most of its raw liquid paperboard from Houston, Texas, USA. In an ironic twist to current globalization trends, Greatview is importing raw materials into China from some of the world's most expensive countries for local consumption. Many will argue that the phrase "<keyword id="730164" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Made-In-China">Made in China</keyword>" has turned into "Made for China." 
 
Elsewhere, Bi established a factory in Germany and has already started exporting. He has also managed to get the attention of former co-workers and major industry decision-makers. 
 
"Before we introduced certified fiber people would say, 'Why should I? It is other people's responsibility.' In many cases, multinational companies used Chinese companies as co-packers, resulting in local companies being very cost conscious. They never voluntarily incurred extra cost for sustainable paper," says Bi. 
 
 "We're in a society where we always see the bad performers punished; we don't often see the good performers being rewarded. This is because the media are mostly geared toward publicizing the bad. But I think I have more listeners nowadays." 
 
Bi believes that this does not happen without some form of personal loss. "You must be willing to sacrifice," he says. "I have never seen a successful leader leading from behind, usually they are leading from the front. You need to become good at motivating other people to do good so that more people, in turn, will follow them." 
 
Bi has been trying to communicate with as many people as possible to get them to pay a higher price for their fiber source. "Although it's more expensive, it's good for the environment," he says. "It's an investment that will be paid back in the future."

10 ways to stay at the top of your leadership game

Social media may have brought brands and consumers closer to each other, but it has its own side effects too. The recent case of voyeurism which involved <keyword id="6492243" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fabindia">Fabindia</keyword> saw some serious backlash from the consumers on both Facebook and Twitter. 
	 Similarly, a couple of months ago, <keyword id="14775" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McDonalds">McDonalds</keyword> got caught in a controversy, when a social media post alleged that a McDonalds’ outlet in Pune had thrown a street kid out, went viral. With consumers becoming self-proclaimed citizen journalists, do we really see any impact of such negative posts on a brand’s image in the real sense? 
	 
	“Yes it does. Because it paints and portrays brands as insensitive. Brands are meant to be benign entities in the market. The moment something like this happens, what happens is that the brand’s image becomes negative. And this can be corrected only by action immediately as the internet is a viral medium,” said brand expert Harish Bijoor CEO of Bijoor Consultants. 
	 
	However, he added that in terms of numbers, such social media post will not have any immediate impact. “The impact will not be seen in the numbers. But if such incidents occur frequently or are repeated, then the brand is finished,” noted Bijoor. 
	 Talking about the <keyword id="567165" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune-incident">Pune incident</keyword> to BI India, Ranjit Paliath, vice president, Business Operations, McDonald’s India (West &amp; South), said, “When the incident involving a street child being denied access to a restaurant in McDonald’s broke on social media, we immediately investigated the matter internally to understand if our employees had in any manner breached basic courtesy and respect. On completion of the investigation, necessary action was taken and the concerned security personnel was suspended. At all times, we did keep putting out statements on social media platforms to keep our customers informed about the actions taken. The company apologized to the child and to the customers for the hurt caused affirming that we treasure and respect everyone in equal measure and do not support any form of discrimination.” 
	 
	According to media reports, the brand had shut its outlet following the incident. “We would like to inform you that the Pune restaurant is open and functional. The restaurant was closed only for few hours to cooperate with the Police for investigations. McDonald’s, at all times, seeks to provide to its customers a safe and welcoming environment and is committed to instilling the need to set the highest standards of courtesy and respect across the system,” clarified Paliath. 
	 
	Interestingly, McDonalds global is once again involved in yet another unpleasant incident in which a woman found a cockroach in her burger purchased from one of the outlets in New Zealand. 
	 
	Commenting on the issue, Paliath explained that the product was bought from a the outlet’s driveway and not the restaurant. “The restaurant in New Zealand has the highest food safety and hygiene grade, and an active pest control program. The food was not served in the restaurant, but was served via drive through, and taken away from the premises to the person’s home. The person posted alleged pictures, but never complained to the restaurant. After the incident broke on social media, she has been contacted by McDonald’s but is refusing to allow an investigation to be held. Therefore at this stage it is impossible to establish the facts of the matter,” he asserted. 
	 While McDonald’s Pune incident hogged a lot of limelight, cola giant <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword>’s <keyword id="567902" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tropicana">Tropicana</keyword> incident failed to create a storm on the social media. On January 26, Rukhsar Saleem, a customer wrote an open letter to the brand. She alleged that a rotten mass was found in the Tropicana juice carton that had an expiry date of March 30, 2015. 
	 
	“I am so angry beyond any sane soul’s comprehension, over such negligence, pathetic quality check and terrible disaster on behalf of self proclaimed ‘world’s No.1 Juice Brand’ Tropicana, PepsiCo India. I am still reeling under the shock and scared to the core when my husband showed me this ugly infected mass coming out of the juice carton. As from this very carton, I had given juice to my two years old son few hours before only,” she wrote in the letter. 
	 
	Threatening to take strict action against the company, she further added, “But now I will do everything possible to make people aware of this incident through every platform, so that people should not blindly trust such tall false claims. And as a profit making organization, you need to do your homework really well before introducing any product in market. 
	 
	The brand was quick to do damage control and immediately contacted Saleem. Cmpany officials had got in touch with her and had taken both the carton and the rotten mass from for testing. 
	 
	“We have collected the pack from the consumer and examining all possibilities including mishandling of the pack.,” a company spokesperson told BI India sometime back. 
	 
	He added, “Consumer safety is paramount to PepsiCo and all our products including Tropicana conform to both Indian and global quality benchmarks. To ensure highest standards of product quality and hygiene, our products are manufactured in automated plants using world-class processes. The juice is untouched by hand and post pasteurization is filled into Tetra Pak and sealed on fully automated lines. The packaging has several layers of film and aluminum foil which prevents any air, and more importantly, microbes from entering into the container and coming into contact with the juice.”
