The drink sold out within hours, and resellers even started <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-teslaquila-resold-online-ebay-empty-bottle-2020-11">hawking the empty bottles for up to $700 on eBay</a>.</p><p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk first used the word Teslaquila in a jokey April 2018 tweet that imagined Tesla had gone bankrupt.</p><p>A few months later he seemed set on turning the joke into a piece of branding, as in October 2018 he <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1050788043907448834">tweeted</a>: "Teslaquila coming soon."</p><p>This proved more difficult than expected. Tequila is a designation of origin, meaning to call your drink tequila you have to produce it in Mexico and follow certain rules. According to The Verge, the company's effort to brand its drink Teslaquila was blocked by Mexico's Tequila Regulatory Council.</p><p>"[The] name 'Teslaquila' evokes the word Tequila ... (and) Tequila is a protected word," the council argued in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tequila-teslaquila-mexican-industry-2018-11">November 2018</a>.</p><p>The council head, Martín Muñoz, said the name Teslaquila could cause confusion about the drink's origin, and in February 2019 the council filed an objection. Essentially, if Tesla wanted to make a tequila, it had to use the word tequila without changing it so as to avoid diluting the brand.</p><p>A month later, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property ruled Teslaquila could not be registered.</p><p>Musk's team argued back in July, saying the name was just the Tesla brand name with "quila" added on — but this didn't convince the regulator, which in January handed down its ruling.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-race-over-tesla-won-musk-knows-doesnt-matter-2020-8?r=ih-sub">Winning the electric-car race is just the beginning of Elon Musk's plan for Tesla</a></em></p><p>There don't seem to be hard feelings, however, as Muñoz told The Verge: "Today the tequila industry has someone as important as Elon Musk representing it. This is, without a doubt, a benefit to all the tequila producers because he is giving his image as an important businessman and he is showing he wants to comply with the rules of this industry.</p><p>"We welcome Elon Musk and the Tesla tequila brand."</p><p>Tesla Tequila is made by a California-based label called Nosotros Tequila, which per Reuters belongs to the Mexican producer Casa Maestri.</p><p>Tesla's product-design officer, Javier Verdura, did not comment on Tesla Tequila's timeline when contacted by The Verge, but he did say the company had trouble finding a manufacturer that could make the distinctive lightning-bolt-shaped bottle.</p>

Tesla has officially filed to trademark Elon Musk's 'Teslaquila'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla is selling a limited-edition set of two beers and two ceramic steins for $150.</li><li>The steins are designed to mimic the form of the Cybertruck.</li></ul><p>Tesla has a new item in stock — a limited-edition set of beers for a mere $150. <br /><br />The set includes two 11-ounce bottles of Tesla CyberBeer, a "Helles Lager" with notes of herb, spice, tea, and citrus, Tesla says on its <a target="_blank" href="https://cyberbeer.tesla.com">website</a>.</p><p>It also comes with two matte-black ceramic CyberSteins that are designed to mimic the futuristic form of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-truck-cybertruck"><u>Cybertruck, which may enter production before the year is out</u></a>. Orders for the beer will begin shipping in late October, according to Tesla's website. </p><p>Back in March, Tesla launched a $30 GigaBier to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-germany-berlin-gigafactory-ships-cars-265-day-delay-2022-3"><u>celebrate the opening of its Berlin Gigafactory</u></a>. The factory delivered its first vehicles last year after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-berlin-gigafactory-delays-july-opening-date-2021-7"><u>facing a series of setbacks</u></a>. <br /><br />The EV-maker also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-elon-musk-electric-car-company-drink-2020-11"><u>released a $250 bottle of branded tequila</u></a>, in a lightning-bolt shaped bottle in 2020, two years after Musk joked about "Teslaquilla" in a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/980566116614291456">tweet</a>.</p><p>Tesla had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-elon-musk-electric-car-company-drink-2020-11"><u>originally filed to name the liquor "Teslaquila"</u></a> but the move was blocked by tequila industry regulations for being too similar to the word tequila itself. </p><p>Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, made outside normal working hours. </p>

When do 2 beers cost $150? When they're sold by Elon Musk, of course

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Cybertruck is the most divisive vehicle launch in at least a decade.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-competition-detroit-falls-flat-2023-10">Tesla</a> will probably sell every single <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-in-person-surprisingly-different-up-close-2023-12">Cybertruck</a> it makes in 2024 and 2025. That may not amount to many vehicles, though.</p><p>CEO <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> could be taking a page from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ferraris-history-2016-2">Ferrari</a>'s playbook by limiting supply, at least initially, to create scarcity value and keep prices high.</p><p>This is also what sometimes happens with big new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/iphone-14-plus-review">iPhone</a> launches, when <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/apple-stock-market-cap-3-trillion-world-gdp-economies-france-2023-12">Apple</a> ramps up production slowly, and fans are left fighting to get their hands on the latest technology.</p><p>The Cybertruck is the most divisive new vehicle in at least a decade. People either hate the angular design or they love it. Then there's Musk's controversial comments, which may have alienated some potential buyers, in addition to challenges scaling up manufacturing.</p><h2>Wall Street's Cybertruck forecasts</h2><p>Wall Street expects Tesla to sell about 48,500 Cybertrucks in 2024. That's the average of recent forecasts from analysts at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Bernstein, and Wedbush.</p><p>"Consensus delivery forecasts need to come down in part because we expect initial production to be challenging," the UBS analyst Joseph Spak wrote in a recent note to investors. "Cybertrucks available in 2024 may be more 'statement vehicles'"</p><p>Goldman analysts reckon that in 2025, Tesla will deliver 150,000 Cybertrucks. Wedbush sees 230,000 being sold that year. <br /><br />Morgan Stanley sees only 78,000 Cybertrucks being sold in 2025, for a total of just 108,000 vehicles over the next two years. That's compared with more than 1 million reservations, for which people put down deposits of $100. Even if 80% of these consumers cancel their reservations, that's still 200,000 purchases.</p><h2>'Ferrari's playbook'</h2><p>If only 108,000 Cybertrucks are delivered in 2024 and 2025, that means demand could significantly outstrip supply in this early period.</p><p>"Will Tesla take a page out of Ferrari's playbook of limited series production?" the Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a recent research note. "The company may decide to purposely limit series production to maintain scarcity while focusing company resources on more profitable products."</p><p>Jones cited examples from automotive history, such as Aston Martin producing 645 units of the Lagonda and Ferrari limiting Daytona SP3 output to 599 units.</p><p>Jonas also noted that from Elon's whacky world, collectors could find limited edition bottles of "Teslaquila" and pseudo flamethrowers from the Boring Company for sale on eBay for thousands of dollars.</p><p>Of course, Cybertruck demand could collapse more than analysts expect. Wall Street can be overly bullish when it comes to public companies. There are also concerns about the rising price tag of the trucks and doubt about how insurers will cover this unusual steel beast of a vehicle.</p><h2>'Machiavellian marketing play?'</h2><p>One way to manage such uncertainty is to limit supply early on.</p><p>When Apple launched the iPhone X, it had some radical new features and a surprisingly high price, similar to the Cybertruck situation.</p><p>When that smartphone first came out in 2017, supply was relatively scarce at first. Christopher Mims from The Wall Street Journal wrote a smart column back then on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-there-are-never-enough-new-iphones-1505649600">Why There Are Never Enough New iPhones</a>.</p><p>"Are these shortages some kind of Machiavellian marketing play? Calculated risk management?" he wrote. "Or is it the case that manufacturing millions of complex electronic gadgets, and distributing them globally, is really hard? It's likely a bit of all of these."</p><p>Mims interviewed Asokan Ashok, a former Samsung executive who saw many flagship products go from the lab to the consumer. Ashok said the preorder mechanism, through which customers signal their intent to buy, provided early data that was essential to predicting demand for complex new products that were hard to make and distribute globally.</p><p>That certainly applies to the Cybertruck.</p>

The liquor is available to customers in select US states, according to Tesla's website. </p><p>Tesla Tequila comes in a lightning-bolt-shaped bottle and is a "premium 100% de agave tequila añejo aged in French oak barrels, featuring a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish," according to Tesla. It's made by California-based Nosotros Tequila. </p><p>When the carmaker first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-elon-musk-electric-car-company-drink-2020-11">launched its line of tequila</a> in November 2020, the bottles sold out within hours. As soon as the next day, people began <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-teslaquila-resold-online-ebay-empty-bottle-2020-11">reselling the bottles</a> on eBay for thousands of dollars. Liquor sales are prohibited on the platform, so the bottles advertised for sale were all empty. </p><p>The idea for a Tesla-branded tequila started as a joke back in 2018, when Tesla CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword> <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/980566116614291456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1324591221424025606%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es2_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Ftesla-tequila-elon-musk-electric-car-company-drink-2020-110-11">tweeted</a> about being found "passed out against a Model 3, surrounded by 'Teslaquilla' bottles." Elon Musk-owned electric car manufacturer <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> has officially launched <keyword id="10231192" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla-tequila">Tesla Tequila</keyword> -- an exclusive, small-batch premium 100 per cent de agave <keyword id="113309" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tequila">tequila</keyword>.<br /><br />Tesla Tequila is available to order on its site for $250 and is packaged in a lightning bolt-shaped bottle mounted on a futuristic stand.<br /><br />"Introducing Tesla Tequila, an exclusive, small-batch premium 100 per cent de agave tequila made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves,": the company said on Thursday.<br /><br />"Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels and into a hand-blown glass bottle, Tesla Tequila features a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish. Best enjoyed as a sipping tequila".<br /><br />Orders are limited to two bottles, and because of laws concerning the online sale of alcohol, it can only ship to certain US states when deliveries take place later this year.<br /><br />Tesla Tequila first came up in April 2018 in Musk's April Fool's Day joke that showed him passed out against a Tesla Model 3 surrounded by "Teslaquilla" bottles and holding a cardboard sign that reads "bankwupt."<br /><br />Later that year, Tesla filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office to trademark Teslaquila.<br /><br />Tesla also has its own merch line, which includes toy cars, phone charging banks shaped like Tesla charging stations, and apparel.<br />

Now, some resellers are betting that people are willing to pay a high markup for a bottle of their own, even if it's empty. </p><p><a href="https://teslatequila.tesla.com/">Tesla Tequila</a> launched Thursday night with a lightning-bolt-shaped bottle and a sticker price of $250, and as of Friday afternoon, there were <a href="https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_nkw=Tesla+tequila&amp;_sacat=0&amp;rt=nc&amp;LH_Auction=1amp;LH_Auction=1">some 90 listings on eBay</a> from resellers who claimed to have secured an order. After tequila and flamethrowers, Elon Musk is now writing a second song

<ul class="summary-list"><li>From sending 1 million people to Mars by 2050 to rolling out 1 million self-driving taxis, <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword> is no stranger to bold predictions. </li><li><keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> had an extraordinary 2020 — it delivered nearly half a million cars, launched the Model Y, and made progress on two new factories. </li><li>But Musk failed to deliver on promises including launching the "full self-driving" feature and starting to build the Tesla Roadster. </li><li>"Punctuality is not my strong suit, but I always come through in the end," Musk said in 2020. </li></ul><p>Elon Musk, Tesla's outspoken and oft-tweeting CEO, doesn't shy away from bold predictions. </p><p>While many corporate executives would rather temper expectations and stick to the script - also known as underpromise and overdeliver - Musk sometimes seems to take the opposite approach. The eccentric billionaire never backs down from an opportunity to hype up whatever Tesla and his other companies have coming down the pike. </p><p>And although <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-promises-that-havent-worked-out-yet-2019-4">Musk's predictions sometimes come to bear, they're often way off.</a> The Model X, Tesla's third production vehicle, hit the market two years behind schedule, and we're still waiting for the Tesla Semi, which was unveiled nearly four years ago. </p><p>That issue, though, may not be much of an issue at all. Despite Tesla's sometimes overly-aggressive goals and missed timelines, investors remain confident. Shares in the company have surged more than 13,000% since it went public in 2010 and well over 700% in 2020 alone - easily outpacing the broader market - making Tesla the most valuable automaker and Musk the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-richest-person-elon-musk-dedicate-wealth-mars-colony-2021-1">richest person on the planet</a>. </p><p>Musk promised Tesla would do a lot in 2020 - here are some of the things that panned out, and some that didn't.</p><h2>Fleet of 1 million robotaxis</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Model 3 taxi" height="960" width="1280" msid="80303715" hostid="261"></div><p>"Next year, for sure, we'll have over 1 million robotaxis on the road," Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autonomy-investor-day-live-updates-event-details-elon-musk-self-driving-2019-4">said</a> during Tesla's "Autonomy Day" presentation in April 2019. To date, Tesla hasn't launched one driverless taxi, let alone 1 million. </p><p>Musk has described the future ride-sharing network as something of a cross between Uber and Airbnb, where Tesla owners can set their cars to roam the streets picking up passengers while they sit at home or at work, earning them passive income. The automaker would also deploy its own cars to areas that don't have enough customers participating. </p><p>Intriguing as the idea may be, it has evidently been tough to roll out. Part of the issue is that Teslas need to have an extremely high level of autonomy to function as driverless taxis - and that's something neither Tesla nor any other automaker currently offers. </p><p>Musk later <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-robo-taxi-network-not-this-year-2020-4">softened his tone</a> with respect to the robotaxis in April 2020, one year after he first announced the plan, shifting his target date to 2021. </p><p>"Punctuality is not my strong suit, but I always come through in the end," Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-robo-taxi-network-not-this-year-2020-4">said</a> on a conference call in April 2020. "So I think we could see robotaxis in operation with the network fleet next year, not in all markets but in some."</p><h2>Release "full self-driving" capability</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla FSD youtube capture" height="1562" width="2880" msid="80303716" hostid="261"></div><p>Tesla has been beating the drum that its self-driving cars would be coming "soon" for years now. And while there's no denying that Tesla's Autopilot and "full self-driving" features are among <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-second-best-assistance-software-consumer-reports-2020-10">the most advanced driver-assistance systems</a> available, they still require full driver attention, despite their clever branding. </p><p>In 2020, Tesla launched a limited beta of its "full self-driving" feature - a $10,000 option - and its CEO said that the system would see a wide release by the end of that year. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-self-driving-beta-software-videos-not-fully-autonomous-autopilot-2020-10">early videos</a> posted online showed that the system was not yet ready for primetime. </p><p>With that deadline looming, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-full-self-driving-subscription-early-2021-elon-musk-2020-12">announced</a> that Tesla would release "full self-driving" as a subscription in early 2021.  </p><p>Still, he doesn't have a stellar track record when it comes to predicting his company's autonomous-driving capabilities.</p><p>In 2017, Musk <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/elon_musk_the_future_we_re_building_and_boring/transcript?language=en">said</a> a Tesla would be able to drive itself from New York to Los Angeles without intervention by the end of that year, and that Teslas would allow drivers to fall asleep and wake up at their destination by 2019. Neither of those things have happened yet.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-going-to-have-monumental-2021-heres-a-look-ahead-2020-12?r=tl-sub">Tesla could follow a historic 2020 with a monumental 2021 by raising money, rolling out more vehicles, and expanding into China</a></em></p><h2>Deliver 500,000 cars</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Fremont factory" height="2000" width="3000" msid="80303717" hostid="261"></div><p>Tesla <a href="https://ir.tesla.com/static-files/b3cf7f5e-546a-4a65-9888-c928b914b529">said</a> at the beginning of 2020 that deliveries would "comfortably exceed 500,000 units" in the coming year, and the automaker just barely missed that goal, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/telsa-just-missed-its-goal-of-delivering-500000-vehicles-2021-1">coming up short by 450 units</a>. It also smashed its previous quarterly sales record by more than 40,000 by delivering 180,570 vehicles in Q4. </p><p>It's remarkable that Tesla nearly reached its sales targets and beat many of Wall Street's expectations during a pandemic that ground auto manufacturing to a halt and dealt a hefty blow to consumer spending. But it's less impressive given that Tesla has set and missed aggressive delivery goals in the past, JPMorgan analysts said in a January 4 note. </p><p>In 2016, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-will-build-500000-cars-per-year-by-2018-2016-5">said</a> Tesla would deliver 500,000 vehicles by 2018 - it ended up delivering only 246,000. He also said that Tesla would sell up to to 650,000 cars in 2019 and 1 million by 2020, the analysts wrote. </p><h2>Launch Model Y</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Model Y" height="1920" width="3000" msid="80303719" hostid="261"></div><p>Tesla <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-y-awd-suv-deliveries-will-begin-early-january-2020-1">launched its fifth production vehicle</a> - the Model Y crossover - last March, one year after its debut in spring 2019. The vehicle completed the "S3XY" acronym and arrived months ahead of schedule, which is unusual for the EV maker. The Model X was <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/7eade576-6747-11e5-a57f-21b88f7d973f">delayed for two years</a> before it launched in late 2015. </p><p>Tesla doesn't break down its sales numbers by product, but the Model Y is expected to boost the automaker's sales as demand for compact crossovers explodes in the US. </p><p>In 2020, Tesla delivered 442,511 Model 3s and Model Ys, compared to 57,039 Model Xs and Model S sedans. </p><h2>Begin limited production of Semi</h2><div type="image" title="tesla trucks semi" height="1333" width="2000" msid="80303721" hostid="261"></div><p>Production of the Tesla Semi has been on the company's back burner for years.</p><p>When the battery-powered class 8 truck was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-semi-event-pictures-details-features-2017-11">unveiled in 2017</a>, Tesla said it was eyeing 2019 for the first deliveries. When the company reported its <a href="https://ir.tesla.com/static-files/47313d21-3cac-4f69-9497-d161bce15da4">third quarter 2019 earnings</a>, it said it was "planning to produce limited volumes of Tesla Semi in 2020."</p><p>But in April 2020, Tesla <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-earnings-q1-2020-profit-revenue-eps-elon-musk-china-2020-4">said</a> it was delaying production and deliveries of the commercial vehicle again, this time until 2021. </p><p>Tesla has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-that-ordered-tesla-semi-2017-12">racked up thousands of preorders</a> for the $150,000-$200,000 trucks from juggernauts like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-canada-increases-tesla-semi-truck-orders-ev-electric-vehicle-2020-9">Walmart</a>, PepsiCo, and Anheuser-Busch.</p><h2>Deliver Tesla Roadster</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Roadster" height="1152" width="2048" msid="80303724" hostid="261"></div><p>Tesla wowed its legions of fans and the <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> at large in 2017 when it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-new-roadster-pictures-details-2017-11">announced</a> a new Roadster would arrive by 2020. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-roadster-what-fans-should-know-electric-vehicles-cars-2019-2">sports car</a> promised to hit a top speed of 250 mph, go 620 miles on a charge, seat four, and sprint to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds - all starting at $200,000, a bargain compared to the gas-powered supercars of the world. </p><p>But last May, as the COVID-19 pandemic dashed automakers' plans for lots of things, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-roadster-cybertruck-built-before-elon-musk-gigafactory-model-y-2020-5">said</a> that the Roadster would have to wait until after the Cybertruck hits the market, which should be in late 2021. </p><h2>Unveil a million-mile battery</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla battery day" height="1006" width="1480" msid="80303726" hostid="261"></div><p>In April 2019, Musk said Tesla batteries would soon be able to power its cars for 1 million miles or more - which would be remarkable given that gas-powered cars tend to live for 200,000 miles, give or take. He said the new batteries would go into production by 2020. </p><p>Musk was expected to formally announce the million-mile battery at Tesla's "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-battery-day-announcements-highlights-elon-musk-annual-shareholder-meeting-2020-9">Battery Day</a>" event in September, but he didn't.</p><p>However, Tesla did announce a new battery architecture at the event that would result in five times more energy, a 16% range increase, and six times the power output. Tesla said the new "4680" cells will be faster and cheaper to produce, and that the new packs can add stiffness to the middle of a vehicle.</p><p>The cells won't reach full-scale production <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teslas-battery-tech-wont-reach-large-scale-production-until-2022-2020-9">until 2022</a>. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teslas-new-battery-design-is-brilliant-says-a-top-researcher-2020-9?r=tl-sub">Tesla's new 'tabless' battery design eliminates the power pack's 'weakest link,' a top researcher says - and could cut production costs by 50%</a></em></p><h2>Make progress on new factories</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Berlin Gigafactory" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80303728" hostid="261"></div><p>In November 2019, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-plan-to-build-factory-in-germany-makes-no-sense-2019-11">announced</a> that Tesla would build its Gigafactory Europe in Berlin, and 2020 saw Tesla make significant progress toward realizing that goal. Despite hiccups like an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-water-shut-off-berlin-factory-construction-site-german-reports-2020-10">unpaid water bill</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-german-gigafactory-sand-lizards-construction-elon-musk-2020-12">hibernating reptiles</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/court-halts-work-on-tesla-berlin-gigafactory-environmental-concerns-2020-2">concerns about deforestation</a> from German environmentalist groups, progress on Giga Berlin has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-tesla-gigafactory-construction-in-berlin-germany-2020-7">chugged along</a>. </p><p>Musk has said the plant will build the Model Y and Tesla's next-generation battery cells when it is up and running by July 2021. </p><p>Last March, Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1237531699681980416">announced</a> via Twitter that Tesla was considering where to build its next US car factory, which would produce the Cybertruck. By July, Tesla had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-confirms-location-new-cybertruck-factory-austin-texas-gigafactory-2020-7">chosen Austin, Texas</a> as the site of the new factory. And by August, <a href="https://www.fox7austin.com/news/tesla-breaks-ground-on-new-gigafactory-near-del-valle">construction had begun</a>. </p><h2>Build Model S with 746-mile range</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Model 3" height="1666" width="2500" msid="80303729" hostid="261"></div><p>Back in 2015, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-tesla-car-range-will-increase-2015-9">said</a> Tesla would build a Model S with a 1,200-kilometer (746-mile) range by 2020. </p><p>Tesla has been steadily increasing its vehicles' range since then, but it hasn't reached that goal yet. The longest-range Tesla is the Model S Long Range Plus which can go 402 miles per charge, according to EPA estimates. </p><p>Tesla plans to launch the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-0-60-mph-top-speed-price-2020-9">Model S Plaid</a>, which it promises will travel more than 520 miles on a charge, in late 2021.</p><h2>Release Tesla Tequila </h2><div type="image" title="tesla tequila hero" height="920" width="1440" msid="80303731" hostid="261"></div><p>In October 2018, Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1050792830732394496">tweeted</a>, cryptically, that "Teslaquila" was "coming soon," along with an image of a tequila bottle he said was a "visual approximation." </p><p>Musk came through in November 2020, when Tesla <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-elon-musk-electric-car-company-drink-2020-11">launched</a> a limited-edition novelty tequila for $250 per bottle. Inventory quickly sold out and early buyers moved to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tequila-teslaquila-resold-online-ebay-empty-bottle-2020-11">list empty bottles on eBay</a> for massive markups.</p><p>But Musk wasn't able to name it "Teslaquila" as he had hoped - the branding was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-tequila-teslaquila-name-blocked-mexico-crt-2020-12">shot down</a> by Mexico's Tequila Regulatory Council. </p><h2>Teslas able to blast jazz and elevator music</h2><p>Elon Musk tweets a lot of things.</p><p>More often than not, those things are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-elon-musk-have-not-condemned-capitol-siege-2021-1">simply memes</a>. Sometimes they're <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1340590280848908288?lang=en">completely random</a>. And every once in a while there's a real product update amid all that noise.</p><p>Parsing between these categories can be challenging. </p><p>What complicates things is that, occasionally, tweets that seem completely random wind up being actual product updates. Musk didn't include a caption with the photo, and Tesla didn't immediately confirm whether the photo was an extension of Musk's April Fools' joke or a hint toward future, Tesla-branded merchandise.</p><p>Musk has used branded merchandise to raise money and draw attention toward his tunnel-boring business, The Boring Company, with which he hopes to construct underground tunnel networks that could be used for his proposed Loop and Hyperloop&#xa0;high-speed transit systems.</p><p>Last year, Musk raised $1 million and drew media attention for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-giving-away-prize-to-10-hat-buyers-2017-12">selling 50,000 branded hats</a>, and earlier this year, he raised $10 million by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/elon-musks-boring-company-selling-500-flamethrowers-tesla-musk-2018-1">selling 20,000 branded flamethrowers</a>.
