And that's, of course, only if they own their own parking space. Installation might be trickier for people living in apartment complexes, urban townhouses, or myriad other housing situations.<h2>Musk and Tesla are politicized</h2>As Tesla looks to lure potential new buyers with a cheaper car, it will have to contend with souring consumer sentiment toward the EV maker.The number of US consumers who say they would consider buying a Tesla fell to 31% in February — down from 70% in November 2021 — according to research recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/would-be-tesla-buyers-snub-company-musks-reputation-dips-2024-04-01/">published</a> by Reuters. Some Tesla owners had previously told BI that they were rethinking their allegiance to the brand due to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-antics-causing-tesla-owners-ditch-car-brand-2023-1">concerns over Musk</a>.Tesla is also facing headwinds in China, where it's losing ground to fierce local competitors like BYD.BYD sells one <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byd-seagull-cheap-ev-electric-car-tesla-china-2023-4#this-sleek-little-hatchback-is-one-of-the-best-deals-on-the-electric-car-market-but-dont-get-your-hopes-up-too-much-you-cant-buy-one-in-america-1">EV model</a> for less than $10,000 in China, where Tesla's Model 3, by comparison, costs about $32,000.Tesla's share of the Chinese auto market fell to 6.7% in the quarter ended December, compared to a 10.5% share in the first quarter last year, Bloomberg <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-03/tesla-also-losing-ground-in-china-as-it-disappoints-globally">reported</a> based on China's Passenger Car Association data.<h2>Time will tell for Tesla</h2>It's still not entirely clear when a new more affordable model might arrive, though Musk floated the possibility of early 2025.Elon Musk has a history of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-he-sets-unrealistic-timelines-has-an-issue-with-time-2018-6">overpromising on timelines</a>. The Cybertruck, for example, was supposed to go into production in 2021. Deliveries to customers didn't start until late 2023.If and when the cheaper car does arrive, it may take off. Renault has had some recent success with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-23/renault-beats-revenue-estimates-on-clio-megane-e-tech-sales?campaign_id=4&amp;emc=edit_dk_20240424&amp;instance_id=121379&amp;nl=dealbook&amp;regi_id=194893788&amp;segment_id=164638&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=2259c117e2d6d1f3b6de8de6262da403">lower-priced EVs</a>, for example. It could make Tesla more attractive in markets like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-would-spur-growth-in-india-ev-market-rival-says-2024-4">India</a>. Maybe the pool of buyers for a cheap Tesla will be ginormous. Betting against Elon Musk has been a losing proposition over time.But it's worth considering what might happen if it's not an instant success.

What if no one wants a cheap Tesla?      

The Centre is considering a request from Elon Musk-run <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> to lower tariffs for imported electric vehicles (EVs) as the company looks into setting up a plant in the country, a media report said on Monday. According to the Financial Times, citing sources, the automaker has asked the government for an initial tariff concession that would offset <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s steep customs duties of 70 per cent for cars under $40,000 and 100 per cent for cars above $40,000. "Their view has always been that they need some tariff concessions at least in the interim period. It would have some kind of sunset clause," one of the officials was quoted as saying. Tesla had asked for the concession as a condition for constructing a plant in the country. The reduced tariffs would apply to all EV manufacturers. The officials stated that the reduced rate under consideration would be 15 per cent for EVs of all prices, but that the policy had not yet been agreed upon within the government, the report mentioned. "We want to create a package which is good for India and which doesn't become a curated package for one company. Others are free to take advantage of this window, subject to meeting these kinds of requirements," one of the officials stated. In September, a report said that Tesla is planning to build a factory for battery storage in India and has submitted a proposal for the same to the government. The electric car-maker proposed supporting the country's battery storage capabilities with its 'Powerwall' during recent meetings. Musk is also aiming to build a Tesla supply system in India. Global automakers like <keyword id="19911527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes" source="keywords">Mercedes</keyword>, Ford, GM, VW are scaling back EV investments and turning towards <keyword id="19906936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrids" source="keywords">hybrids</keyword> due to shifting consumer preferences and challenges like inadequacy and slow pace of charging infrastructure expansion. We believe the situation is no different in India, the analysts said. <keyword id="19906967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="keywords">Tata Motors</keyword> reduced its EV sales estimate and prices recently to boost adoption, citing similar hurdles. MSIL, with its tech-agnostic approach (Hybrids, EVs, CNG, Flex-fuel, etc.), is well-positioned (&amp; hedged) amidst slowing pace of electrification, the report said. Reports indicate of MSIL's strong Hybrid model launch pipeline going forward (five models in next 2-3 years). Tax rationalisation on hybrids could act as a fillip and shift consumer preference towards this choice of powertrain, it added. Till last year, global electric vehicle sales continued to outpace supplies (partially owing to semiconductor shortages) with OEs' orderbook piling to record levels. However, despite normalisation of supply chain, pace of electrification seems to have moderated. Reduction in EV prices (by <keyword id="19895433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla" source="keywords">Tesla</keyword>, Ford etc.) to drive wider adoption also isn't helping. Global automakers like Mercedes, Ford, GM, VW have deferred EV related investments, reduced their EV sales guidance indicating moderation in EV growth going ahead, the research said. Few of these auto OEMs are turning their focus back to Hybrids amidst shifting consumer preference. Domestic demand scenario for electric PVs is no different. Recently, Tata Motors (market leader with 73% share) reduced its FY24 EV sales estimate by 20% (to 75-80K units) and also cut prices by upto Rs 125K/vehicle to drive wider adoption. Lack of adequate charging infra and hesitant customers (to pay premium over ICE vehicles) are the primary reasons for slower EV adoption, the report said. Currently, MSIL is working on multiple technologies (Hybrids, EVs, Flex-fuel and Bio-gas in addition to ICE/CNG) as the company believes multiple technologies can co-exist in the medium-to-long term. Its current tech-agnostic approach is again a well thought-out approach against committing resources to a single technology, the report said.
