In 2020, TikTok star Addison Rae made headlines when she was spotted in her bright pink Tesla Model X. Nearly four years later, the car doesn't look much different and sales are slumping."How long can Tesla get away with the same basic car?" Auto Trader editor Brian Moody told Business Insider. "People are fickle. They want the next new thing."Tesla hasn't updated some of its models in years. Tesla CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-will-not-launch-refreshed-model-y-this-year-musk-says-2024-06-09/">said</a> there aren't any plans to refresh the Model Y, which came out in 2020, this year. And the design of the Model S and Model X hasn't been meaningfully updated since 2021.Instead, Tesla's playbook so far seems to be subtle refreshes that only an eagle-eyed fan would notice when driving by.The carmaker released a refreshed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-3-highland-update-photos-price-features-2024-1">Model 3 Highland</a> earlier this year, tweaking the car's front end to make it sleeker, eliminating the stalks on the steering wheel, and adding superior suspension and sound insulation. But the average person walking by it in a parking lot could easily mistake it for the model that launched years ago."If you already have a Tesla there's no reason to go back and buy a new one," Edmunds' director of insight Ivan Drury told BI. "And if you're a first-time buyer, wouldn't you rather get something that's actually new?"Tesla released its first new car in four years in November when it began <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-price-release-event-delivery-truck-live-updates-2023-11">deliveries of the Cybertruck</a>, but the futuristic pickup has proven a polarizing vehicle and its over $60,000 price point means the truck might not be for the masses just yet."That would have been the perfect opportunity for a brand refresh," Moody said of the Cybertruck release. "If Tesla was a traditional automaker, it would filter that style down to its other vehicles."While Musk has argued that Tesla's vehicles are never outdated due to the company's frequent software updates, Moody said new buyers are more likely to be attracted to something tangible, like a new exterior design or a new product entirely.During <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-tsla-earnings-call-report-live-updates-2024-7">Tesla's earnings call</a> on Tuesday, Tesla shareholders were eager to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-shareholders-want-elon-musk-to-release-new-models-2024-7">learn more about new releases</a>. Investors asked questions about timing for Tesla's revamped Roadster (which is still on the way after being shown off in 2017), its Robotaxi, and plans for a lower-cost vehicle. Tesla's cars are starting to look pretty basic — and that's a problem

Instead, Mercedes led in desirability with 19%, and BMW jumped from 13% last year to 16%, according to the survey.Dwindling interest from the next generation of car buyers is a troubling sign for Tesla, which is already struggling to sell cars amid increasing competition. Tesla's deliveries fell for the second straight quarter, and its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-car-sales-slump-salespeople-commission-2024-7#:~:text=Once%2C%20Tesla%20raced%20to%20produce,time%20in%20the%20company's%20history.">US market share</a> fell below 50% for the first time in the company's history.Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds, a vehicle inventory and information company, told Business Insider that declining interest in Tesla among Gen Z may not be due to the product "being the problem so much as the personality associated with it," in reference to CEO Elon Musk.Musk has certainly been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-fightingwars-alot-of-fronts-2024-8#moving-hq-out-of-california-6">stirring up a lot of negative attention</a>, from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/misinformation/elon-musk-misleading-election-claims-x-views-report-rcna165599">repeatedly</a> spreading <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politics.co.uk/news/2024/08/08/elon-musk-deletes-post-spreading-fake-news-about-uk-detainment-camps/">misinformation</a> online amid his political shift to the right and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-transgender-daughter-says-absent-cruel-father-nbc-2024-7">misgendering his Gen Z daughter</a>, who is trans, to clashing with the UK prime minister and facing multiple lawsuits filed against him as well as the companies he runs. The divisive billionaire has often taken to X, formerly Twitter, to comment on controversial topics such as trans rights, the Ukraine war, diversity, and immigration.Drury said Gen Zers are paying attention."I'm assuming that they're a little more conscious of what's happening, and they are on social media more often," Drury said. "I think that his latest antics have really cost the company. It's caused problems that never needed to exist."While Tesla's CEO might need to do less to win back their favor, Drury said that the car company's products need to do more."When you copy and paste over and over again, and then when you have freshens or redesigns that aren't bringing anything meaningful to the table, you're going to lose market share," he said.Despite competition in the EV market <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-electric-vehicles-byd-selling-record-cars-tesla-competition-deliveries-2024-7">becoming stiffer</a> than ever, Tesla has not had major refreshes to their aging car models in years. Musk <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-will-not-launch-refreshed-model-y-this-year-musk-says-2024-06-09/">said</a> there weren't any plans to update the popular Model Y, which came out in 2020. Model S and Model X have also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cars-starting-to-look-basic-sales-problem-2024-7">not been significantly upgraded</a> since 2021.Instead, Musk has been pivoting Tesla's future <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cars-starting-to-look-basic-sales-problem-2024-7">toward robotaxis</a>, but Gen Z doesn't seem interested. The study of Morgan Stanley interns found that 19% of those surveyed would not use a robotaxis.Drury said that while autonomous cabs would be useful in theory, in actuality, they're "completely not practical at all.""It only will work for people who don't own a car and have no intentions of owning one," he said.Robotaxis will likely not be Tesla's saving grace, as 51% of Gen Z surveyed think owning or leasing a car will still be necessary by 2030.And, for the Gen Z interns surveyed, it probably won't be an EV at all.The study found that preference for EVs decreased for the second year in a row, dropping to 15% versus 22% last year and 30% in 2022. While electric cars may be the cleanest, they're not the easiest to own, especially for fresh-out-of-college consumers."Gen Zers probably don't have the opportunity as often to charge as, say, somebody who has a single-family home," Drury said.A recent consumer study conducted by <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://executivedigest.sapo.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Mobility-Consumer-Pulse-2024_Overview.pdf">McKinsey</a> found that 46% of US EV owners said they were likely to switch back to a gas-powered vehicle, and 29% of global EV owners said they were likely to switch back to an internal combustion engine.Respondents in 9 major countries said the top reason was the lack of charging infrastructure, including lack of at-home charging and limited long-distance driving, BI <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-is-so-bad-its-driving-owners-back-to-gas-2024-6">previously reported</a>.Drury said that even if some EVs are the cheapest vehicles on the market, younger generations will likely avoid them due to their inconvenience."If this EV doesn't allow me to live my life with some level of ease, then it's just not an option," he said.

Musk's legal team has defended his posts on dogecoin, calling them "innocuous and often silly tweets."Dogecoin has soared in recent weeks amid bitcoin's big rally, but the token is way down from highs achieved during the altcoin boom at the height of the pandemic. Dogecoin spikes as Elon Musk says the meme token could pay for Tesla cars one day

Insurers are increasingly writing off — or "totaling" — a Tesla even after light damage because of their complexity and cost for repairs, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/car-news/insurers-are-writing-off-lightly-damaged-teslas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the market-watchers at Kelley Blue Book. </a>Because there are so many tech features like sensors and cameras in the car — on top of highly-specific parts that<a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/collision-support" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> can only be fixed by Tesla or one of its approved body shops</a> — it's often cheaper to simply declare the whole vehicle destroyed and send it to the scrapyard instead of getting it back in working order. Luckily, many elements of an electric car's drivetrain can be salvaged. In some cases, parts might find themself powering a classic conversion by a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hot-rodders-converting-classic-cars-electric-vehicles-run-on-batteries-2023-3">small handful of enthusiasts making some of the most famous cars ever made run on electricity. </a>To make matters even more complicated, Tesla's new "structural" battery packs — those that are integrated with the car's body — have "zero repairability," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-y-battery-zero-repairability-insurance-premiums-sandy-munro-2023-3">according to manufacturing expert Sandy Munro. </a>"A Tesla structural battery pack is going straight to the grinder," Munro, who's known for his vehicle teardowns, told Reuters earlier this year. A study by two major salvage companies found that of the over 120 Model Ys declared totaled, "a vast majority" had less than 10,000-lifetime miles, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-insurers-take-different-paths-deal-with-expensive-repairs-2023-01-26/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters reported at the </a>time. Tesla is acutely aware of the high insurance costs of its vehicles, with CEO Elon Musk in January saying they were "unreasonably high." He also noted that the company had implemented design changes, specifically in the bumper, to make some repairs easier and was working to ensure spare parts availability. "So if you're waiting for a part to get repaired and that part takes a month, now you've got a month of having to rent another car. It's extremely expensive," he said on Tesla's fourth-quarter earnings call in January. "And of course, you're missing the car that you love and the one you actually want to drive. So this has actually a very significant effect on total cost of ownership and customer happiness." Tesla has also been working to offer its own insurance products in some states, including California, with <a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/insurance/real-time-insurance">premium prices based on driving data</a> from cars' onboard sensors. Tesla cars aren't union made, but they are the most American made

<ul class="summary-list"><li>It is possible to charge an electric car while driving.</li><li>But only in very specific situations in highly controlled environments. </li></ul>One of the biggest reasons more people don't own electric cars like a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-owners-switching-gas-charging-a-hassle-study-2021-4">Tesla is charging</a>. They're afraid of running out of juice and are concerned about the lack of charging locations in the US as compared to gas stations. However, there are ways to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buying-tesla-price-model-options-tax-credit-2018-4">charge your Tesla</a> without stopping to charge — some more realistic than others. <h2>Can I charge my Tesla while driving?</h2>It is possible to charge a Tesla while driving, kind of. One YouTuber's experiment involved a gas generator to power his Tesla Model S during an 1,800-mile road trip through the Midwest without stopping to plug in. (He did have to stop for gas, ironically). But it wasn't the magical solution to range anxiety and lengthy charges. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-402-mile-range-upgrade-the-best-2020-6">Tesla Model S</a>, which has an EPA range rating of 405 miles, sucked more energy than the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-gas-generator-charging-warped-perception-road-trip-2022-10">gas generator</a> could produce, Insider's Tim Levin reported. Matt Mikka, who published the multi-year experiment on his channel, Warped Perception, said he had to park for up to six hours per day while the car charged — and even once got pulled over for driving too slowly on the highway as he tried to keep energy consumption low. <h2>Can I use electric roads to charge my Tesla?</h2>Luckily, there are some better options in the work to still be gas-free. Electreon, an Israeli startup founded in 2013, is working to build roads that can wirelessly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electreon-wireless-electric-road-that-charges-electric-vehicles-2020-6">charge moving electric vehicles</a>, a technology that could theoretically eliminate the need for lengthy pit stops or plugging in.In a demonstration of the technology's potential, the startup drove an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-ev-drives-1200-miles-range-wireless-charging-roads-electreon-2023-6">electric Toyota Rav4 Prime</a> — a plug-in hybrid vehicle — for 1,207 miles on a test track without stopping. That's about five times farther than a normal EV can travel on a full charge. In 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/public-road-detroit-to-charge-electric-cars-as-they-drive-2022-2">Electreon</a> announced plans to build a mile-long stretch of road embedded with its technology in Detroit that will be able to charge cars as they drive, so long as they install a special receiver. It's expected to be functional sometime in 2023. <h2>Can I charge my Tesla with solar panels?</h2>While a few startups and automakers have toyed with the idea of installing solar panels on a car to charge while driving, it's likely to be a while before they could generate enough power to run the car on their own. Hyundai's Sonata Hybrid experiment in 2019, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/05/hyundai-launches-car-with-a-roof-based-solar-charging-system.html">for example</a>, could add about 1,300 kilometers per year to the car's range, the company estimated. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aptera-electric-vehicle-launch-edition-solar-panel-car-2023-1">Aptera</a>, a startup, in 2023 said it was working on a futuristic car with a 400-mile range that could travel 40 miles on built-in solar panels.More realistically, it's possible to charge your Tesla using solar panels on your roof — a product Tesla also sells. The product line has been growing in importance to the company's bottom line each year, and in 2022 Tesla reported installation of 348 megawatts of solar capacity. Tesla also sells inverters and energy storage so that your home can be powered — and your car charged — regardless of the weather. Musk has long said Tesla's goal is to support a clean-energy future on all fronts, not just transportation. <h2>Can I swap my Tesla battery?</h2>A handful of companies are working on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-battery-swapping-could-charge-electric-vehicle-faster-than-gas-2023-5">battery-swapping technology</a> that could make getting a fully charged battery as fast as getting gas, but it's yet to catch on in the US as much as it has elsewhere. Tesla does not offer battery swapping as a service, and its cars appear to need battery replacements less often than some other electric cars.<h2>Do Tesla cars come with a power cord?</h2>Tesla no longer includes charging cables with cars because, <a href="https://electrek.co/2022/04/16/tesla-goes-full-apple-stops-delivering-cars-with-included-charging-cable-now-sold-separately/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Musk, they're rarely used. The company sells a home charger that, depending on your home's wiring, could add up to 44 miles per hour of charge. Tesla said its first Model Y vehicles to be made at its new Austin, Texas factory were nearing completion. As of 30 June, Musk's shareholding in Tesla came to about 170.5 million shares and selling 10 per cent would amount to close to $21 billion based on Friday's closing prices. But researchers at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) discovered that Tesla's vehicles store far more detailed data than previously known, including speed, accelerator pedal position, steering wheel angle and brake usage. Some of this data can be stored for up to a year, the institute said. The team was investigating a crash involving a Tesla with Autopilot in use that had rear-ended another vehicle after it braked unexpectedly. Rather than seek the data from Tesla, the Dutch investigators chose to "reverse engineer" the company's data logs in order to "objectively" assess them. "These data contain a wealth of information for forensic investigators and traffic accident analysts and can help with a criminal investigation after a fatal traffic accident or an accident with injury," Francis Hoogendijk, a digital investigator at the NFI, said in a statement. The NFI said that even though Tesla has complied with data requests from the government in the past, the company also left out a lot of data that could have proven useful. "Tesla however only supplies a specific subset of signals, only the ones requested, for a specific timeframe, whereas the log files contain all the recorded signals," the NFI report said. The news of the hack could have implications for US investigators who are probing a dozen incidents of crashes involving Tesla vehicles and emergency vehicles while Autopilot is in use.
