He noticed his parents were around less: They'd go straight to sleep once they got home from work and were out the door first thing in the morning. They were being forced to pick up extra shifts at work to make ends meet, and the lack of family time left an impression on Thomas. "That made an impact on me because my parents worked for a living, and we lived paycheck to paycheck," he said. "And I personally think that all of us in <keyword id="159493" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gen-z" source="Orion">Gen Z</keyword>, when we experienced that with our parents, we were like, 'Fuck that. We don't want to continue going through that.'" As a young Black man working to organize an Amazon warehouse in deep-red Alabama, Thomas has his work cut out for him. But he's committed to making his workplace better and ensuring future generations don't have to miss out on time with their parents because of job pressures. He isn't alone in his activism. There's a growing wave of labor organizers and reformers in their 20s who have been working overtime across the country to change the workplace. Workers born between 1997 and 2012 have come of age at a time when college degrees <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-closing-gender-education-and-ideological-divides-behind-gen-zs-union-movement/">no longer promise job stability</a> and <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2022-07-08/inflation-has-americans-anxiety-levels-surging-poll">economic anxiety is high</a>. More than any other generation, these new entrants to the workforce prioritize fair treatment on the job and refuse to bend to exploitative or outdated corporate norms. And now, Gen Z is turning to organizing as a way to stand up to corporate bosses. Recent union drives at varying workplaces such as Starbucks, Amazon, Home Depot, Minor League Baseball, and even North Hollywood's Star Garden Topless Dive Bar have all involved Gen Z workers — and some have been led by Gen Z outright. <h2>'There comes a point where enough is enough'</h2>The internet is littered with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/28/business/gen-z-workplace-culture.html">articles fussing</a> over Gen Z's alleged distaste for workplace "norms," but young workers are not lazy, entitled, or keen on slacking off — they're simply choosing to reject some of the practices that previous generations were forced to accept. Surveys have found that Gen Zers are less likely than their elders to go along with <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/gen-z-work-five-days-office-173640467.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJq6cUmGCOZIQr54DBDVOH4zRLyJf_i6obZDgNkGYuqoOV4o97NmKBmRXlbB67KLhJNXOSuUgcDpUpa8-VxlACRftXGiqsNLtZcNVYTTHynw2E5XixmKtaIEbqNLxbr6YjYQ7MFSSLBNKJhEZRtJe3lPdAYQ-KK5IBVVITGG9VyV">long hours</a>, <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/22977663/gen-z-antiwork-capitalism">overbearing bosses</a>, or a lack of <a href="https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20220613-gen-z-the-workers-who-want-it-all">boundaries</a> between the personal and the professional. Instead, this new wave of workers is actively pushing back on the behaviors that make the workplace a toxic environment. "When I started at Starbucks, I never understood why I had to deal with the treatment I was given," <keyword id="15428811" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="laila-dalton" source="Orion">Laila Dalton</keyword>, a 20-year-old college student who was <a href="https://perfectunion.us/starbucks-fires-union-leader-laila-dalton/">fired from Starbucks</a> earlier this year after organizing a union in her store, told me. "I think my generation is finally starting to realize that it doesn't matter if you're in the food industry, retail, construction, healthcare, etc., we all deserve to have healthier working conditions." When Dalton would complain about being disrespected on the job or the prevalence of poor working conditions, others would brush off her concerns, saying, "It's the food industry. What do you expect?" But she and her Gen Z peers are not ready to accept that mode of thinking. A recent National Society of High School Scholars <a href="https://www.nshss.org/media/35707/nshss018-report-final-v2.pdf">survey</a> of 11,000 high-school and college-aged people found that Gen Z's highest priorities when choosing an employer were the fair treatment of all employees (across genders and races), followed by quality of life, employer flexibility, and corporate social responsibility. They are also <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-02-04/should-i-quit-my-job-for-more-money-great-resignation-has-workers-taking-risks?sref=jUG5PqcP">more likely</a> to leave jobs that don't <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@theninthsemester/video/7058733659733462319?is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7058733659733462319&amp;web_id=7069537873968776709">meet their needs</a> and find better-paying employment elsewhere (though they're not alone in that propensity; <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/231587/millennials-job-hopping-generation.aspx">Gallup</a> dubbed <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/231587/millennials-job-hopping-generation.aspx">millennials</a> "the job-hopping generation"). Put simply, young workers want something better than their parents had and aren't afraid to seek it out. The content creator Jade Carson, 22, <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/22977663/gen-z-antiwork-capitalism">told Vox's Terry Nguyen</a>: "I want to be in a role where I can grow professionally and personally. I don't want to be stressed, depressed, or always waiting to clock out." Younger workers have spent their lives facing crises from climate disasters to the erosion of reproductive rights. <keyword id="15428810" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rebecca-givan" source="Orion">Rebecca Givan</keyword>, an associate professor of labor studies and employment relations at Rutgers University, told me that as a result, they were far more likely to speak out against injustice. "They are used to holding power accountable, and they understand the deep flaws in the system," she said. "These workers are demonstrating that they will not accept a lack of voice in the workplace, or employers who pay lip service to progressive values and then fall woefully short." As Jun Shin, a 23-year-old labor activist in Honolulu, put it: "There comes a point where enough is enough." Quitting isn't for everyone, though, and many young workers have opted to create change from within instead, whether that's been by workplace activism or unionizing. "Young workers are open to finding ways to make their workplaces and jobs better, especially if they could not afford to quit and find another job," Shin told me. As Jacqui Germain recently wrote in <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/gen-z-most-pro-union">Teen Vogue</a>, a <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-closing-gender-education-and-ideological-divides-behind-gen-zs-union-movement/">new report</a> from the Center for American Progress labeled Gen Z "America's most pro-union generation," and its members have spent the past two years flexing their collective muscle on the picket lines and at the bargaining table. "A lot of us in Gen Z are saying we need an alternative, something that actually gives us a voice, something that's a mechanism to implement some kind of change," Thomas told me. "And so we're like, the union is the way to go because these companies are not offering us anything." <h2>'I'm not going to stop fighting anytime soon'</h2>Jonah Furman, the former national labor organizer for Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign and a staff writer and organizer for Labor Notes, points toward the upswing in union-election petitions as a sign that the young generation is turning to labor organizing as an outlet for its political energy. The number of new filings at the National Labor Relations Board, which oversees union elections, has jumped significantly. <a href="https://www.nlrb.gov/news-outreach/news-story/election-petitions-up-53-board-continues-to-reduce-case-processing-time-in">According to new data</a>, 2,510 union-representation petitions have been filed in 2022, which represents a hike of 53% from 2021 and is the highest number of petitions filed since 2016. In September, Gallup found a whopping <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/354455/approval-labor-unions-highest-point-1965.aspx">77% of adults ages 18 to 34</a> approved of unions (compared with 68% overall). And many members of the "pro-union" generation have been at the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/21/economy/gen-z-young-workers-union">forefront</a> of the current organizing wave. <div type="image" title="starbucks amazon union rally" height="2401" width="3205" msid="95281922" hostid="261"></div>"Not only are young workers pro-union, but they're actively turning to the NLRB to assert that stance, which is pretty unheard of," Furman told me. While other generations challenged the status quo using other means of dissent or protest, Furman said Gen Z was "turning to union-authorization cards and unfair-labor-practice charges." And while identity markers like race, gender, and country of origin have long been used by employers to drive divisions in the workplace and prevent organizing, Gen Z isn't biting. According to the Center for American Progress report, the <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-closing-gender-education-and-ideological-divides-behind-gen-zs-union-movement/">racial and ethnic diversity</a> that characterizes the generation has contributed to an uptick in support for unions, and even across a highly polarized political divide, Gen Z's gap in union support between Democrats and Republicans is the <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-closing-gender-education-and-ideological-divides-behind-gen-zs-union-movement/">narrowest</a> of any generation. As Thomas told me, a union makes it clear that "this bigotry shit is just meant to divide us so that the employer class can continue making as much profit as they want to." He added: "I'm not going to stop fighting anytime soon." Every new generation forges its own relationship with the powers that be, and Gen Z has made it quite clear which side it's on. As a loudly pro-worker, pro-union cohort, it's saying no to exploitation and standing up against corporations that want to grind them down the same way they did with these young workers' parents and grandparents. <h2>Rethinking the worker-boss struggle</h2>Since Gen Z is perhaps America's most online generation, it's no surprise that young organizers have found success using platforms like Twitter and TikTok as organizing tools to educate labor-curious workers. "We're tired of the lack of political action from those who supposedly represent us," Elise Joshi, 20, told me. "We shouldn't be handing our life away for a CEO that couldn't care less about us." Joshi is the acting executive director of Gen-Z for Change, a youth-led nonprofit that works with a network of 500 online creators and activists to promote "civil discourse and political action" around issues like the climate crisis, reproductive rights, voting, and workers' rights. The organization has also been taking on corporations trying to screw over their workers. In one notable example, when the grocery giant Kroger was attempting to hire replacement workers ahead of a strike, the digital strategist <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/93bv45/tiktok-script-ralphs-scab-fake-applications" target="_blank">Sean Wiggs</a> wrote a script of code that was used to flood its careers website with bogus applications to keep the scabs out. "We're using creative tactics that we've learned from growing up in the digital age, from social media to online scab campaigns," Joshi said. TikTok, in particular, has proved <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/22977663/gen-z-antiwork-capitalism">a powerful tool</a> for organizations like Joshi's and individual content creators to <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-army-union-busters-amazon/">spread pro-union messages</a> and <a href="https://www.mic.com/life/tiktokers-new-labor-movement">educate their peers</a> about their rights as workers. Unlike some older union members, who may prefer to focus solely on "bread and butter" economic issues, younger workers understand the need to take a more intersectional and inclusive approach to bring in as many workers as possible to their cause. Instead of focusing solely on better pay, Gen Z organizers are also fighting for racial justice, trans rights, and reproductive freedom, recognizing that economic well-being comes from more than a paycheck. "It's obvious to Gen Z how all of the issues are connected, and how in order to combat one issue, we must address them all," Joshi said. Givan, the Rutgers' employment-relations professor, sees this surge in youth-led organizing as a significant moment for labor, and one that may have a lasting influence on the workforce as Gen Zers continue in their careers. "Many of them may go on to organize in their next jobs as well," she said. The current US labor movement is stronger, and more digitally savvy, thanks to Gen Z's contributions. And because of this new generation of activists, the future of the American working class is shining a little brighter than it was only a few short years ago. Because if there is one quality that Gen Z has in spades, it is audacity — and no mass movement has ever succeeded without it. A heavy frying pan, book, or small exercise weight can also work. Here's how to press tofu: <ol><li>Drain your tofu. Carefully cut a slit in the package and dispose of any excess water. </li><li>Prepare your pressing station. Set up a plate or baking sheet, then put a towel down on top of it. Nguyen prefers folded non-terry dish towels because they're more absorbent and sustainable, but paper towels work too. If you're using paper towels, layer two or three together to increase their absorbency. </li><li>Place and salt your tofu. Remove the whole block of drained tofu from its package and set it down on top of your towel. Season all sides of the block with salt – this will also help to draw out moisture. </li><li>Weigh it down. Set a flat object – a plate, baking sheet, or cutting board all work – on top of the block of tofu. Put your weighted object, like a large can of food, a heavy book, or a small exercise weight, down on top of the flat object, making sure the weight is distributed evenly and that it's not so heavy that it crushes your tofu. If your tofu starts to crack under the pressure, take it off and reduce some weight. </li><li>Wait at least 30 minutes. The longer you wait, the more moisture will be released, but leave it to sit 30 minutes to an hour at minimum. If the room is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, Nguyen says you can even leave salted tofu out overnight. Replace the towel halfway through and adjust your weights as needed. You'll know your tofu is done when the towel is thoroughly saturated and the block is visibly thinner from the moisture loss. </li></ol>Quick tip: If you're short on time, try doing a quick press. Cut the block into small, uniform pieces, wrap them in a towel, and gently apply pressure with your hands. Your tofu may take longer to cook and won't be as crispy, but since it's plant-based, Nguyen notes that food safety is not a concern as it is with meat. <h2>Using a tofu press </h2>If you have access to a tofu press, they're a bit more efficient and hands off than a DIY setup. There are two types of tofu presses: a plate press and a box press. Plate presses have two flat surfaces secured by screws or knobs, which you tighten to squeeze the tofu. Box presses consist of a tub to place the tofu in and a tight-fitting lid that applies just enough pressure to push out excess moisture. Some presses have a designated place to catch the excess water as it is released, and some don't – so you may want to use the sink or a baking sheet to avoid mess. To press the tofu, drain the excess water from the package, and place your block of tofu in the press. Twist the knob or screw(s) of your plate press, or lock the lid of the box press into place. Then there's the pandemic, which has sent Gen Z down a nostalgic path. Instagram unveiled new features aimed at helping creators earn money

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2020, Ijeoma Oluo's 2018 book "So You Want to Talk About Race" became a bestseller (again).</li><li>That year, Jessica Natale also surpassed 1 million <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> followers with "@soyouwanttotalkabout."</li><li>After Natale announced a book deal, Oluo accused her of capitalizing off her <keyword id="1089587" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="anti-racism">anti-racism</keyword> work.</li></ul>A white woman whose <a href="https://www.instagram.com/so.informed/">washed-out Instagram graphics</a> about social justice topics earned her 2.8 million followers <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZyU5lFp74/">has apologized</a> to a famous Black author who accused her of co-opting her brand.Jessica "Jess" Natale was better known as "So You Want to Talk About" on Instagram, where she created the handle "@soyouwanttotalkabout" in February 2020. The account isn't associated with Ijeoma Oluo, the author of the 2018 New York Times bestseller "So You Want to Talk About Race," a massively popular nonfiction book about race in America. On April 12 of this year, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CNkRpyino3b/">Natale announced</a> she would publish her own book, "So, Let's Talk About It," which would cover topics that include anti-racism and Black Lives Matter.By announcing her book, Natale - who had run the page anonymously up until that point - also revealed she is white.<div type="image" title="Jessica &quot;Jess&quot; Natale (center) surrounded by her Instagram graphics." height="940" width="2774" msid="85258024" hostid="261"></div>The slideshow graphics on Natale's Instagram page <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21359098/social-justice-slideshows-instagram-activism">distill social justice issues</a> into chunks of shareable text. In August 2020, Natale told <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21359098/social-justice-slideshows-instagram-activism">Vox's Terry Nguyen</a> that her account targets millennial women who like "mimosa pictures."Natale's account is <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21359098/social-justice-slideshows-instagram-activism">popular among</a> <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> Instagram activists, influencers, and white people who want to show their support for a range of trending topics about human rights and global political crises. Recent posts include <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSKIg-GLCqb/">tidbits about</a> climate change and activism in Ukraine; a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSE4R5arWtq/">James Baldwin bio</a> and quotes from the novelist; and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSPTZ-XLZMW/">an infographic</a> defining terms associated with emotional manipulation, from gaslighting to guilt-tripping.<a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">According to Oluo</a>, Natale's viral slideshow graphics about social justice have <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">misled people</a> into believing the account is run by Oluo or related to her book. "It's actually been really heartbreaking to hear from hundreds of people who didn't know this wasn't my page," Oluo, who is Black, said on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">her own Instagram account</a>, which has just over 517,000 followers. "I think this whole thing was really duplicitous and really shady and it's harmful."<div type="image" title="Writer Ijeoma Oluo attends the 2018 The Root 100 gala at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers on November 8, 2018 in New York City." height="1583" width="2111" msid="85258029" hostid="261"></div>In response, Natale <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZyU5lFp74/">said in an Instagram post that</a> she would rename her account - it's now @So.Informed - and that she would acknowledge the contributors who write her page's viral posts more clearly, begin paying contributors for their work, and would create a separate place for critical feedback of the page to be answered.Natale also said she was "pausing" the publication of her book while she reconsidered her responsibilities to her audience. Unlike the Instagram page, which has posts <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSVBnVwlIXF/">contributed by or written with others</a>, Natale claims sole authorship of her book. "I am not interested in the meme-ification of anti-racist and social justice work," Oluo said about the page in a recent <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">series of Instagram story videos</a>. "I would never turn people of color, disabled people, queer and trans people into footnotes of building my brand." She continued, "I am not interested in making this over 400-year-old complex system simple for white people to digest," criticizing the way accounts like Natale's simplify systemic issues like racism for easier consumption. "I'm not trying to give you an easy way to feel like you have been doing something just by reading a post. That is not what I'm about, that is not the work that I do," Oluo said.Oluo and Natale did not respond to requests for comment. <h2>'So You Want to Talk About Race' and its Instagram copycat both 'skyrocketed' during the summer of 2020</h2>Oluo published "So You Want to Talk About Race," her first book, in January 2018. It re-entered The New York Times Best Seller list in June 2020 after the May 2020 killing of George Floyd ushered in a wave of sudden popularity for anti-racism <keyword id="5050" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">books</keyword> and resources, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/11/books/review/me-and-white-supremacy-layla-saad.html">The Times reported</a>."So You Want to Talk About Race" was also a critical success, receiving praise from <a href="http://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/art-books-music/g13787875/best-new-books-2018/">Harper's Bazaar</a>, <a href="https://www.publishersweekly.com/978-1-58005-677-9">Publishers Weekly</a>, and many more outlets, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/books-white-privilege-novels-racism-antiracism-black-scholars-2020-6#so-you-want-to-talk-about-race-by-ijeoma-oluo-1">including Insider</a>. Oluo was praised for writing "punchy" but "not preachy" prose that offered advice for readers seeking to better understand systemic and institutional anti-Black racism in America's political, economic, and social systems.At the same time that Oluo found additional literary-chart success for "So You Want to Talk About Race," the conversation online around race was booming - particularly on social media, where activists gamified platforms to engage users in discussions about racial justice in America. Other pages like Natale's sprung up to <a href="https://www.insider.com/influencerpaygap-instagram-page-shows-inequality-pay-gap-black-white-influencers-2020-6">show racial pay gaps</a>. Celebrities like Selena Gomez <a href="https://www.insider.com/ruby-bridges-school-video-footage-instagram-takeover-selena-gomez-2020-6">handed their Instagram platforms</a> to activists of color for a day or more. Artists <a href="https://www.insider.com/instagram-artists-black-lives-matter-2020-6">found viral fame</a> with graphics about Black lives. Instagram <a href="https://www.insider.com/influencers-promote-black-lives-matter-donation-instagram-ar-filter-2020-6">story filters</a> encouraged people to donate to funds and charities. <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-blackout-tuesday-the-show-must-be-paused-purpose-backlash-2020-6">Black squares</a> abounded.According to the Hachette Book Group - which signed both Oluo and Natale under separate imprints - <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/contributor/jessica-natale/">Natale</a> became involved with politics during former President Barack Obama's re-election campaign as a volunteer. Then, while volunteering on Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, Natale launched "@soyouwanttotalkabout" on February 11, 2020.<div type="image" title="The covers of &quot;So You Want to Talk About Race&quot; by Ijeoma Oluo and &quot;So, Let's Talk About It&quot; by Jessica Natale." height="1520" width="2046" msid="85258033" hostid="261"></div>Natale's page slowly picked up followers in the proceeding months but things changed after Floyd's death. According to <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21359098/social-justice-slideshows-instagram-activism">her interview with Vox</a>, Natale had 10,000 followers in June, then 1 million by August."And so in the middle of this, while we're dealing with the trauma of being a Black person in America, dealing with all the new weird attention on the work, I'm getting these messages from people referencing this account," <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">Oluo said of Natale's then-blossoming page in a recent Instagram story</a>."They're saying 'Is this you? It looks like you but not.'"<h2>Oluo said she contacted Natale in 2020 </h2>When Oluo clicked on "So You Want to Talk About," she said she <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">immediately noticed</a> it was "exactly one word short of my book title that is currently selling out in stores everywhere." She said she messaged the page, which was then still anonymous, and asked for more information. Natale followed up by adding a small disclaimer that she wasn't associated with "So You Want to Talk About Race" to her Instagram bio, Oluo said.The disclaimer remained on the page until recently, when she rebranded with her new title. <div type="image" title="Posts on Natale's page talked about topics like 'whitesplaining' and the racist history of the US police, as well as even broader issues like reframing and change." height="629" width="1258" msid="85258040" hostid="261"></div>"So I blocked the account, I just tried to moved on. But I've literally been seeing this account everywhere," Oluo said. "And now of course there is a book deal coming out of it that I know a lot of people out here doing the real work would absolutely love to get. It is frustrating."<h2>Natale responded to Oluo in a post titled 'the truth matters'</h2>Oluo posted her first series <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">of Instagram stories</a> about Natale's page on August 8. Natale first responded publicly with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CSVBnVwlIXF/">a slideshow</a> on August 9 titled "the truth matters."Since then, Oluo said <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">in Instagram stories</a> that Natale reached out to apologize to her directly. Oluo also said it was "really gross" that Natale's book deal came from another imprint of Hachette, Oluo's own literary umbrella.Hachette didn't respond to Insider's request for comment."That subscriber count isn't going away," Oluo said in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ijeomaoluo/?hl=en">follow-up</a> Instagram story. "I hope that from here on out those 2.8 million people who come for easy, quick, feel-good information to help them feel informed will actually be connected to the people doing real work."Oluo also said that most of the responses to her Instagram stories were positive, but that a few angry fans of Natale had asked Oluo if she had the legal right of ownership over the page's name."If you thought you've been following an anti-racist page and yet you are going to show up on the page of a Black woman saying she doesn't have the right to be upset at the theft of her work, uh, you didn't actually learn anything from that page," Oluo said.<a href="https://www.insider.com/culture">Read more stories from Insider's Digital Culture desk.</a>
