Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Reban area of Shopian in South Kashmir this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated. According to details, security forces had a specific input about the presence of terrorists in that area. As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the terrorists were hiding, they came under fire that triggered the encounter. Kashmir Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar told IANS that the identity of the killed terrorists is being established. This year a total of 75 militants have been killed so far in the Kashmir Valley, as per the police records. Five terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir amid encounter in Shopian district

Four suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists were killed and two policemen were injured in a gunbattle on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after a truck carrying a group of freshly infiltrated militants was intercepted by security forces on the outskirts of Jammu city on Thursday, top police officials said. The terrorists had come to execute a "big plan" which has now been foiled, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu, Mukesh Singh, said. In Srinagar, IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said the four terrorists were on their way to the Kashmir valley to disturb the District Development Council (DDC) polls scheduled later this month, as Pakistan has been trying to cause trouble in the political process. Giving details of the encounter, IGP Singh told a press conference in Jammu that during checking a truck was stopped at Ban toll plaza in Nagrota area at 5 am but the driver fled leaving behind the vehicle. CRPF and police personnel moved to search the vehicle and came under fire of the terrorists hiding in the truck.They retaliated resulting in an encounter. Other forces also joined resulting in a fierce gunbattle in which terrorists fired grenades and arms, he said. In the three-hour-long gunbattle, four terrorists were killed and two policemen were injured, he said, adding the policemen were out of danger. A huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosive material was recovered including 11 AK rifles, 3 pistols, 29 grenades and 6 UBGL grenades, he said. As per weapon recovery and past instances, it appears that they belong to JeM, he added. Speaking on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar, IGP Kumar said, "For the last few days, Pakistan has increased attempts to infiltrate militants into this side and to disturb the elections for which the process is on. In this context, Jammu Police and security forces have done a good job by neutralising four Pakistanis (militants). Their (militants') aim was to come to Kashmir to disturb the election process". He said there were apprehensions about militants targeting the elections, but the security forces were fully prepared to deal with the situation. "Whether there is an election or August 15 or January 26 or even a VIP visit, apprehensions are always there, but we are fully prepared... We are providing security to the candidates and they have started going to the field for campaigning from yesterday and there is nothing to fear," he said. Kumar, however, said providing security to each candidate contesting the polls, which begin on November 28, was difficult. "Providing security to each candidate is difficult. We are providing them collective security and they are being put up in secure areas. Whenever any candidate goes out for campaigning, we provide a double escort with him and secure the area for him to campaign," he said when pointed out that the candidates were alleging that they had not been provided security. DDC polls will be held from November 28 to December 22. Results will be declared on December 22. India had renewed its bid to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist following a terror attack in Pulwama that killed over 44 paramilitary policemen on February 15, 2019. India accused Masood Azhar of training militants and planning several terror attacks in the country including the 2001 Parliament attack and the recent Pulwama attack. The attacks which were a series of shooting and bombing attacks had lasted for four days in November 2008, in Mumbai’s prime locations. The attack is still considered to be one of the most deadly ones in the world. 2016 - Pathankot air base attack Masood Azhar was also held responsible for being the mastermind of the terror attack that took place at Pathankot air base, in India, on 2 January 2016. The attack led to a breakdown in India-Pakistan relation that has been undergoing tussles over Kashmir from years. The attack initially killed four attackers and two security personnel with one more security personnel dying from injuries hours after the attack. 2019 - Pulwama attack Forty-five paramilitary soldiers lost their lives in Pulwama, Kashmir on Thursday in a terror attack. The handset uses a particular chip that enables the mobile device to connect to the nearest mobile tower, irrespective of telecom service provider. The militant also claims that the calls cannot be traced by intelligence agencies and if any call is even intercepted, it will disconnect automatically. The LeT has trained about 450 men out of different places in Pakistan for anti-India operations last year, says a report by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-has-developed-an-untraceable-mobile-trains-terrorists-in-underground-facility-claims-captured-terrorist/articleshow/64283814.cms">Economic Times</a>. Zaibullah, son of an income tax officer in Pakistan was one of them. He crossed over to India in March with five others. All his associates who crossed the border with him were killed in an encounter with the Indian Army on March 20. Zaibullah even took a bullet to his hand in the encounter but escaped the scene. He was caught 15 days later. He says that the LeT chiefs also visit training camps where boys like him between the age of 15-25 are trained. All the trainees are motivated towards ‘jihad’ and are even been motivated in the name of ‘<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burhan_Wani">Burhan Wani</a>’.
