The total geological reserves for these eight coal mines are 2157 million tonnes and the cumulative peak rate capacity for these reserves are 19.31 million tonnes per annum. The Coal Ministry will conduct e-auction of two more reserves on Wednesday. <ul class="summary-list"><li>My son was diagnosed with <keyword id="12188725" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="autism" source="Orion">autism</keyword> spectrum disorder in December.</li><li>He was attending a private school that was great about masking, but that quickly changed.</li></ul>In December we learned that our child had borderline <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-autism-surprising-facts-about-autism-spectrum-2019-4">autism spectrum disorder</a> and needed support with his speech. He was already enrolled in a private preschool, which we chose because it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-private-school-parents-tension-2022-2">required both children and adults</a> to <a href="https://www.insider.com/emily-oster-unvaccinated-kids-and-parents-wear-masks-inside-2021-8">wear masks</a>.At first I was proud of our preschool's efforts when it came to COVID-19 risk mitigation. My family felt safe, protected, and heard.Then our son's teachers began using his ASD as an excuse for mask removal for the entire class, suggesting he needed to see his classmates' faces in order to obtain certain social skills. They said this even though he regularly talks about his friends at school and we had frequent outdoor playdates with classmates.My child has no issues with mask-wearing despite his diagnosis, but if he did, I'd still want his peers and teachers to wear masks since none of his classmates are old enough for vaccination.For his safety and the safety of his peers, we've decided to keep him home until he can get vaccinated and attend public school.<h2>A teacher's opposition to masking made our decision clear</h2>After keeping him out of school for the first half of January because of Omicron, we sent our son back wearing a KF94.During a committee meeting in early 2022, the school director began pushing the topic of mask removal with arguments about "mental <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword>" and "social-emotional learning" for preschoolers, specifically for kids on the spectrum. Kids like mine.Using tools like masks may benefit my child's speech development in the long term by keeping COVID-19 rates down, making it safer for him to spend time with his peers and teachers unmasked.Many children on the spectrum struggle with transitions in their daily routine, and many also need speech-therapy specialists in the classroom with them. Once my child and his classmates are fully vaccinated, I will feel more than comfortable removing masks from our daily lives.My son's teacher argued in a private email shortly after the committee meeting that we were creating more social and emotional barriers for my son in the classroom by having him wear a mask and that his getting COVID-19 should be the least of our concerns when it comes to his health. Her words made me feel isolated and alone.The meeting had ended with a resolution to gradually scale down masking once the school had installed new HEPA filters. I felt this was a reasonable option. Later that night, however, my son's teacher sent a message announcing her resignation unless mask requirements were removed completely. She argued that N95s hurt her head and were unnecessary since "masks don't work."We withdrew our son immediately.The school director sent us an apologetic email, saying: "Had the teacher not resigned, I can assure you that there would have been disciplinary action due to this behavior. I'm sorry for the hurt that this has caused your family and I wish only the best for you in the future."When reached for comment on this story, a representative from the school said, "Some aspects of mitigating the risk of anyone contracting COVID-19 like universal mask wearing can, at times, interfere with the developmental goals of our school for the child." As soon as my son can get vaccinated — hopefully by the fall — we will send him to public preschool. He will have a full team of specialists to help with his needs, and he and his peers will be better protected from the virus.For now, we will wear masks in public indoor spaces, have outdoor playdates with friends and family, and try to stay hopeful. Trump rails against deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe, 'leakin James Comey,' and 'phony' Clinton investigation

<ul class="summary-list"><li>After moving from California to Florida, Terry Gilliam set up Facebook groups to help others move.</li><li>Gilliam's Facebook groups, Leaving California and Life After California, have nearly 300,000 members.</li></ul>A few years ago, Terry Gilliam, 64, packed his bags, sold his East Bay, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaving-california-moving-to-las-vegas-living-in-seattle-2023-12">California home</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-florida-pros-cons-millennials-gen-x-retirement-census-2024-1">moved to Florida</a>. What he didn't know at the time was how many people wanted to do the same.Gilliam said he moved for cost of living and political reasons, as well as to care for his family. After founding two Facebook groups for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaving-california-moving-to-colombia-medellin-retirement-cost-of-living-2024-2">California movers</a>, he realized thousands more were in the same boat.His groups, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/leavingcali/">Leaving California</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/lifeaftercali">Life After California</a>, have nearly 300,000 members between them. It's become his full-time job to monitor them and help people move out of the Golden State, from launching a tour for people to see new cities to connecting movers with real estate agents nationwide."Many feel they're being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaving-california-moving-to-thailand-colombia-bali-cost-of-living-2024-1">forced out of California</a>. They're not moving because they want to; they're moving because they feel like they have no choice. because of the cost of living and or the politics," Gilliam said. "The big question is, I have to leave, but I've lived here my whole life and I have absolutely no idea where to go. So we do our best to recommend places for people to go."<div type="image" title="Terry Gilliam" height="495" width="660" msid="108917406" hostid="261" sizebytes="20872"></div>Per the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/data/tables/time-series/demo/geographic-mobility/state-to-state-migration.html">Census Bureau's tabulation of ACS data</a>, about 818,000 people left California between 2021 and 2022, while only 475,800 moved in. Texas, Arizona, and Florida were the top destinations. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-california-pros-cons-texas-millennials-gen-z-single-2023-12">Business Insider determined</a> the typical mover leaving California makes $53,500 and is a millennial or Gen Zer.Business Insider spoke to four realtors in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-are-moving-from-austin-orlando-to-smaller-quieter-cities-2024-3">hot spots</a> for California movers, some of whom have worked with Gilliam to guide movers away from the Golden State."People have a misunderstanding or a wrong idea of the people that are moving here from California. People think that these clients of mine are selling their mansions and coming here with bags of cash and buying up all the homes, and to be honest, that's not true," said Haley Van Edom, a realtor with the Van Edom Home Group in Knoxville, Tennessee who has worked with Gilliam. "I do have some clients that are cash buyers and do quite well, but the majority of my clients, in my experience, are just middle-class, hard-working Americans, teachers, first responders, firefighters, cops."<h2>Moving to Florida from California</h2>Gilliam grew up in Florida and got his first job at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/driving-for-uber-lyft-florida-disney-world-orlando-spring-break-2024-3">Disney World</a> at 16. He worked there throughout high school and college and became a manager there in his 20s.He worked as a restaurant manager in Connecticut and Texas before moving to California to help Chili's expand its business. He pivoted into real estate as a mortgage broker in the early 2000s.He enjoyed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-california-weather-minneapolis-minnesota-cost-of-living-boomer-2024-1">living in California</a> in his early years there. The weather was stellar, and he enjoyed the business environment."My average summer temperature was probably at 85 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and no humidity. Well, you're not going to get that in Tennessee or Florida or Arkansas or Texas in the summertime," Gilliam said.However, growing up in a conservative family, he felt he didn't fit in as the state's politics shifted further left."I'm not married now, but I was married at the time, and I was telling my wife, who was a native Californian, there's a whole lot more out in this country that is along the lines of what we believe," Gilliam said. "In California, the cost of living is just off the charts, and the solution to any problem in California, to me, is to raise taxes."Gilliam sold his 2,500-square-foot home for slightly over $1,000,000, noting the price more than tripled in the 20 years he lived there. Gilliam moved to Winter Park, a city of 29,000 outside <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-orlando-florida-cheaper-homes-from-miami-california-ny-2024-2">Orlando</a>, to help care for his parents.He hopes to buy a comparable home on the outskirts of Orlando, which would cost between $400,000 and $450,000, he estimated. He wants to buy a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in a 55+ retirement community.He said traffic is better in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-florida-from-minnesota-weather-hurricane-insurance-retirement-expensive-2024-3">Florida</a>, which has improved his quality of life, and he's noticed more road construction in his area than in California. He said the cost of nearly everything is lower, and Florida's lack of a state income tax has made him feel more financially stable."Here in Florida, I've met 100 of my neighbors through the three years that I'm back, and as I walk my dogs around here, everybody's friendly, everybody says hi," Gilliam said. "The quality of life from that regard alone is so much better, you talk to somebody and have a conversation."<h2>Growing his groups</h2>In 2018, feeling that many Californians agreed with his perspectives, he began the Leaving California Facebook group hoping it would grow to 1,000 members. He posted articles about businesses leaving the state, policy changes, and stories of people's frustrations with rising prices."In the early days, I work these groups seven days a week, morning, noon and night," Gilliam said.The group took off in early 2020, and he started a second group called Life After California. The group featured accounts of people who moved to states like Texas or Tennessee, many of whom felt more at home. The groups' members tended to lean slightly more conservative, though he said people of all political and socioeconomic backgrounds are represented.He noticed people saying they felt more free, in a better financial spot, and happier after moving out of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-california-to-denver-colorado-best-choice-2023-12">California</a>. He said the groups blossomed in the first few months of the pandemic as people were looking to move to cheaper areas across the country, many wanting to get away from shutdowns. Overall, people wish they left sooner, he said."In January of 2022, California came out and said they were going to socialize medicine, single-payer, and to pay for it, they were going to double everyone's taxes, which are among the highest in the country," Gilliam said. "We grew from between 500 to 1,000 new members every day for a long time, for probably a good 45 days or so."He hired a virtual assistant to maintain these groups and brought on two business partners. He leads them in approving new members and assisting people who need help figuring out where to move. Monitoring the groups and approving posts takes up much of his time.He said many in the groups are predominantly moving to Texas, Florida, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-california-to-tennessee-pros-cons-san-diego-murfreesboro-2023-11">Tennessee</a>. He's also noticed states like Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina rise in popularity recently. Most are moving from Southern California, and he said it's rare that people regret moving — those who do typically say it's because they miss their families.<h2>California movers: 'Political refugees' wanting more space</h2>Many Californians are looking to move to the other coast, and perhaps Florida's appeal to ex-Californians is no surprise."They want to have that environment like they did in California, that warm weather, and a lot of people want to have Disney and Universal close by," said Craig Blessing, a realtor with Premium Properties Real Estate Services in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-people-moving-florida-home-prices-cost-of-living-2023-12">Central Florida</a> who moved from California in 2022. "People of all economic status can apply and receive tuition scholarships to go to your private schools, charter schools, or whatever they want to, so that's one of the things I reach out to these people in California about."But some are looking for quieter, more relaxed communities. Van Edom, the Knoxville realtor, said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-to-knoxville-tennessee-relocation-simpler-cheaper-life-vs-miami-2023-10">Knoxville</a> is a newly popular destination for California movers. Many movers are what she calls "political refugees" looking for a centrally located city with somewhat comparable weather.Shay Felknor, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway C. Dan Joyner Realtors in Greenville, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-nashville-to-charleston-pros-cons-job-change-weather-2024-3">South Carolina</a>, said the number of movers from California — specifically from San Diego and Sacramento — skyrocketed during the pandemic as people were looking for "having their freedoms protected" and living more comfortably for less money.Many are looking for multi-generational living arrangements, such as accessory dwelling units, on more acreage than they could have afforded in California. Felknor estimates the average price point is about $350,000, and she said there's only a three-month supply of inventory for March."Some of the feedback that I get is they just love it here, people are friendly, it's very green," Felknor said. "The interesting thing that I wasn't prepared for is how much the people from California love the rain."Many people would use the group to connect with realtors in markets they were exploring. Gilliam launched the Leaving California Freedom Tour to help movers discover parts of the country "marked by affordability, freedom, and superior educational opportunities." The tour starts in Atlanta and goes through cities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia."The challenge is that many people in our group have never lived anywhere else. They don't know what it's like to live in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nashville-local-upset-become-party-destination-culture-2024-1">Nashville</a>, Tennessee, and so the fear of the unknown really kind of handcuffs them," Gilliam said. He said one of his clients sold a 3,000-square-foot home for $3 million, then bought an 8,000-square-foot new construction in Franklin for the same price. But he said most movers agree they want more political freedom in an area with lots to do and close proximity to a city."Our rents are extremely strong per purchase price, so I would say dollar in dollar out, you're going to get a better return in Tennessee than you are in all the states where these people are moving from," Lanagan said. "There's really a lot of business advantages and tax advantages in Tennessee. Over the years, the pair have been at the center of multiple controversies for their business dealings and Republicans are already using them to attack Clinton.One aide for a rival 2016 campaign aide told Business Insider Clinton's brothers will definitely cause issues for her White House bid. "Will they be a problem? Yes. They underscore everything that people fear and hate about the Clintons," the aide said. "They're essentially the id of Bill and Hillary Clinton. A bunch of money-grubbing and opportunistic hillbillies with no sense of ethics, decency, or even legality."Indeed, while Hugh Rodham has yet to make headlines this cycle, last weekend, the New York Times published a story <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/11/us/politics/tony-rodhams-ties-invite-scrutiny-forhillary-and-bill-clinton.html">delving into Clinton's youngest brother</a>, Tony Rodham. The paper reported he had repeatedly tried to profit from his connection to the former first family.The newspaper pointed to a wide range of Tony Rodham's business activities including a Haitian gold mining venture and speeches he gave before Chinese investor conferences and a California cosmetics company."The connections to the Clintons have given Mr. Rodham, a self-described 'facilitator,' a unique appeal and a range of opportunities," The Times' Steve Eder wrote. "But his business dealings have often invited public scrutiny and uncomfortable questions for the Clintons."Earlier this year, Tony Rodham was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clintons-brother-linked-to-alleged-political-favors-2015-3">linked to alleged political favors</a> in a report published by the Department of Homeland Security's investigator general. The report criticized a top DHS employee for appearing to go out of his way in 2010 and 2011 to assist "a politically connected regional center," where Tony was listed as the CEO.The Times cited several other instances where Tony Rodham had tried to use his influence. After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, former President Bill Clinton helped lead the recovery commission. According to the paper, Tony pressured his brother-in-law for funds. Tony himself reportedly discussed the arrangement in court proceedings that "were the result of a lawsuit over unpaid legal bills filed by his lawyer in a child support case.""I deal through the Clinton Foundation. That gets me in touch with the Haitian officials," Tony said. "I hound my brother-in-law, because it's his fund that we're going to get our money from. ... And he keeps telling me, 'Oh, it's going to happen tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.' Well, tomorrow hasn't come yet." Both Bill Clinton's office and the Clinton Foundation told The Times that they never helped Tony Rodham with the project, which never ultimately moved forward. However, it does appear Bill Clinton has been willing to help Rodham out with his finances. In the same court proceeding, Rodham reportedly discussed getting help landing a $72,000-a-year job at a company owned by now-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), a longtime Clinton ally."I was complaining to my brother-in-law I didn't have any money. And he asked McAuliffe to give me a job," Rodham was quoted saying, adding that the job wasn't enough to pay his bills. "It's kind of like the job he got me a long time ago when I worked in the prison."In a phone conversation on Wednesday, Business Insider asked Tony Rodham whether he was concerned controversies about his various ventures could become an issue in his sister's campaign."I'm not going to talk about that," he said before hanging up. Clinton campaign spokesman Nick Merrill sent a statement to Business Insider saying Clinton "loves" her brothers. While Merrill acknowledged Hugh and Tony Rodham have had their "ups and downs," he said it would be up to them to decide whether they want to address questions about their lives that could come up in the context of her White House bid. "She loves her family more than anything. Her brothers have always been there for her, and she will always be there for them. Each though have their own lives, their own jobs, their own ups and downs. It is for them to decide how much of their private lives to share publicly in the context of their sister's campaign," Merrill said.Still, Clinton's rivals are clearly willing to use her brothers against her. Republicans quickly pounced on The Times' story on Tony Rodham. The national GOP forwarded the article to reporters on Monday morning along with a statement attempting to link Tony to questions about Clinton's personal finances. "The New York Times delves into Tony Rodham's practice using the family name to secure controversial business deals as a 'facilitator,'" wrote Raj Shah, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee. "This comes amid scrutiny of Bill Clinton's six-figure speaking fees, controversial foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation and other eyebrow raising money making endeavors to 'pay our bills.'"And Tony Rodham isn't the only one of Clinton's siblings who could invite unwanted scrutiny during her White House bid.<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>Hugh Rodham, the middle sibling, <a href="http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2001-02-23/news/0102230141_1_clinton-administration-hugh-rodham-pardon">was once described</a> as the "the Billy Carter of the Clinton administration" for a pair of controversies caused by his business ventures.In one instance, Hugh, who <a href="http://www.texasmonthly.com/story/houseguest">is often called "Hughie,"</a> accepted $400,000 in fees from two felons who were issued pardons by President Bill Clinton. The second issue involved a business venture Hugh and Tony were both reportedly involved in along with a Russian-backed political boss who was a rival to the US-allied government in Georgia. According to the New York Times, President Clinton's national security adviser asked the brothers to back out of this venture, which <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/26/opinion/26iht-edignatius.2.t_0.html">the paper described as having</a> "caused trouble for US foreign policy." Apart from his business dealings, Hugh's conduct during visits to the White House was allegedly unbecoming. According to "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/For-Love-Politics-Hillary-Clinton/dp/1400063248">For Love of Politics</a>," an account of the Clinton presidency written by author Sally Bedell Smith, Hugh Rodham treated the White House "like a dorm." Smith quoted Ann McCoy, a longtime friend of the Clinton's, describing Hugh's behavior. "Hughie would show up in the worst outfits. … He would be wearing shorts with golf balls on them and a T-shirt. He would sit in the Solarium, and Hillary wouldn't bat an eyelash. People would come all dressed up for dinner, and Hughie would waddle up in his shorts and fall asleep," McCoy was quoted saying.Hugh Rodham has also tried his hand in the media. During the Clinton administration, he hosted a radio show. More recently, Hugh seems to have tried to revive his media career and some of what he had to say would be decidedly off message for the Clinton campaign. A promotion for an unspecified "radio program" <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ymIQfqdJaw">that was posted on YouTube in 2012</a> features Hugh blasting President Barack Obama, who had Hillary Clinton in his Cabinet at the time. In the clip, Hugh discusses the 2012 election."The new radio program that you're about to listen to, which is on the internet streaming live will tell you, the voters, the unvarnished truth. Let me tell you what's the importance of this election. If you're unhappy with the no jobs policy the weak economy and all the rest of the things that the current administration provided you in the last four years and are unhappy with what the challengers have to say then we will try to get down to the nitty gritty of what's important and what's important is how you perceive your role as an American," he says.During Bill Clinton's presidency, Hugh also attempted to launch his own political career by challenging former Republican Senator Connie Mack in Florida. Hugh lost that race and along the way he was <a href="http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2001-02-23/news/0102230141_1_clinton-administration-hugh-rodham-pardon">reportedly accused of campaign finance violations and forced to admit he had a spotty voting record</a>. The Orlando Sentinel quoted one anonymous "leading state Democrat" <a href="http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2001-02-23/news/0102230141_1_clinton-administration-hugh-rodham-pardon">describing Hugh simply as "an embarrassment"</a> for the party in Florida. "We in the Florida party had nothing to do with him, wanted nothing to do with him," they said.Hugh Rodham did not respond to a message Business Insider left at his Florida law office last week seeking comment on this story.While the Rodham brothers would not speak to us, lawyer and political consultant Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton family friend, sent us a comment on their behalf. Davis suggested there were inaccuracies in the various allegations leveled against the Rodhams over the years, but they don't want to defend themselves due to a desire to protect "their families privacy." Davis also expressed the brothers' wish that Clinton's rivals and members of the media will refrain from targeting her family."Tony and Hugh live their own own lives, and while there are plenty of facts to dispute, they are not going to do so as part of a political charade," Davis said. Hillary Clinton's brothers could cause major problems for her presidential campaign

From playing the 12-year-old who's taken in by a hitman in "Léon: The Professional" to the&#xa0;"Star Wars" prequels and most recently her Oscar-winning performance as a ballerina driven to her breaking point in "Black Swan," she's undergone a very public evolution.Now Portman, 35, is moving behind the camera in her directorial feature debut, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135989/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_9" target="_blank">A Tale of Love and Darkness,</a>" an adaptation of the moving autobiographical novel by Israeli author <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Oz" target="_blank">Amos Oz</a>.The ambitious film (in theaters Friday), told in Hebrew, looks back on Oz's childhood set in the early years of the State of Israel. Portman was born in Israel and moved to the US when she was three. Her fascination with her home country is evident in her tender adaptation, in which she also stars as Oz's mother, whose personal struggles lead to her overdose on sedatives.Business Insider sat down with Portman in New York City to talk about what led to her making the movie, the legendary directors she called on for help, why she's not on social media, and how she plans to introduce "Star Wars" to her five-year-old son.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Jason Guerrasio: How did you end up reading "A Tale of Love and Darkness"?Natalie Portman: I was just reading it as I would normally pick up a book and then all of a sudden as I was reading I just started seeing the film. I think that's a testament to Amos Oz's writing but also has to do with the fact that this time period and these kinds of stories I've been imagining my whole life because of the family stories I've heard growing up. It felt a very clear thing for me to direct.&#xa0;Guerrasio: So you got into producer mode: seeing shots and wondering if it could work for the screen.Portman: Yes. I just enjoyed it and then couldn't stop thinking about it and imagining it and so I contacted Amos Oz and asked his permission to make the film.&#xa0;Guerrasio: How was selling him on that?Portman: I was introduced to him through my agents and then got to meet with him in Israel and he was really immediately so generous. Considering that I had never directed anything before and at that time I was 27.&#xa0;Guerrasio: So you hadn't even made any of your short films yet?Portman: I think I had done one short but I don't even think he saw it. He knew me as an actress a little bit. But he was really generous with it and he asked me to make my own thing. "The book exists so just don't try to film the book, make your own piece," which was very freeing.Guerrasio: Had he been approached before about making the book into a movie?Portman: He had been approached by a few filmmakers in Isreal to make the film and the thing he told me that he didn't like when they adapted the scripts was that they tried to explain why his mother did what she did. He said, "Don't try to give an easy explanation, it is a mystery to me still and I'm still trying to figure it out." It's not something that you can give some kind of pop-psychology.Guerrasio: Did you seek his notes when you wrote the script?Portman: At every stage I sent him the script any time I got to a draft that I felt good with. And he would send me notes back but it was interesting because they were never creative notes. It was just, "This was actually December '47, not February '48," those kinds of things.&#xa0;Guerrasio: He was the fact-checker for you.Portman: Right, which was great because he was the most accurate fact-checker of all - it's his life.&#xa0;<div></div>Guerrasio: <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-ca-mn-natalie-portman-20160804-snap-story.html" target="_blank">I read</a> that you reached out to some of your former directors: Mike Nichols, Darren Aronofsky, Terrence Malick. What were you seeking from them?Portman: All of them really influenced me just by working with them and getting the great luck of observing them in action, but I really leaned on them most I think during the editing process where I got to show them the film and get their feedback. It was really helpful mainly because they are such different filmmakers and they were all very encouraging of me making my own thing. They would say, "Obviously, I would do this this way but you need to do it your way." Especially Terry, he always said to me, "Paint from life. You paint from your perception of the world."Guerrasio: Would it get overwhelming if they critiqued the same scene differently?Portman: Absolutely. You have to be careful when you're getting feedback because people will give you conflicting feedback all the time, but ultimately you end up following your own inner guide. Darren in one scene where there are gun shots, I had the boy running before the shots and he was like, "If you put it after it ups the tension by a thousand," and I was like, "Oh, obviously." [Laughs] He said it and immediately it became obvious and clear and was so much better. Sometimes people say something to you and you're like, "I respect you so much, I love what you do, but I disagree. I don't think that's right for the way I see it." &#xa0; <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio: And that's part of being a director.&#xa0;Portman: Yeah. And I think that was actually something that I saw with Darren a lot when he worked. He was totally open to anyone's suggestions and if they were good he would take it and if they were not good he would say, "No, I disagree." It's the best way to be because there's no ego about who the idea comes from, it's just using the best one.&#xa0;Guerrasio: How hard was it to see yourself on-screen constantly throughout this whole process?Portman: It's hard. And I think it was good for me because normally I can't watch myself at all and watching myself makes me cringe and I cover my face and it's very hard to watch. I think people who aren't in film experience that when they hear their voice on an answering machine or something. So to have to watch myself in a way that was constructively critical was really good for me because it made me a little bit more easy on myself because I wasn't allowed to walk away screaming.&#xa0;Guerrasio: But that doesn't mean you're going to go out tomorrow and binge all of your movies.Portman: No. That will never happen. [Laughs] But as a director you have to, you don't have the option of saying, "I'm not watching this."Guerrasio: Will you direct again?Portman: I would love to. I don't have a particular plan right now because I've been so focused of getting this into the world that I feel now that it's coming out that I can really think about that more.&#xa0;Guerrasio: You've spent a lot of time in France recently. What have you observed about how female artists are portrayed there compared to here in the US?Portman: It's really interesting because the issue we have with female directors here is not the case in France at all. Especially with the young generation, there are even more women than men making movies right now. And I don't know exactly what it is but you can see how cultural the phenomenon is because I think part of it has to do with there being socialized child care and a great support system for working women there that's government-supported. And also because of government funding for films there's probably more regulation on what percentage of money goes to each gender as opposed to it being privatized here.&#xa0;Guerrasio: It's still news when a female director makes a big movie like "Wonder Woman" or a smaller movie that gets a lot of attention, but over there -Portman: It's commonplace because it's mainstream, which is great. I can't wait for it to get that way here.Guerrasio: Do you feel it's moving that way here?Portman: I think the press is doing a wonderful job of putting the pressure on the decision-makers in Hollywood to support more female directors. I hear more than ever people actively searching for women to direct, actively wanting to finance women's films, which is not to say it is easy, but I think it's been a great instance of how journalism has put pressure on business to be more fair between genders.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Can you find it yet in the scripts coming your way? Characters that are outside the box of the typical female characters in Hollywood?Portman: I don't know if the scripts are changing so much. I mean, I've been working for almost 25 years and made over 40 films and I worked with my first female director, on a feature, last year ["Planetarium"]. And it's still the only one. But now I feel like in the past year I'd say I got three or four offers for films that had female directors so in my career I haven't had that opportunity before. That's exciting.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio:&#xa0;You're doing something else completely different for you, playing Jackie Kennedy in "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1619029/?ref_=ttco_co_tt" target="_blank">Jackie.</a>" What was the prep for that?Portman: I read every biography I could get my hands on. There were like 20 of them, which was interesting because they are not exactly high literature, they are pulpy. But the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/12/us/12jackie.html?_r=0" target="_blank">[Arthur] Schlesinger</a> transcripts ended up being the most useful of anything. But it's interesting because she edited them herself so there are gaps in there. The tapes are released so you can listen to them, not just read it. That was really helpful to get the accent, which is very particular. And we recreated a lot of the White House tour for the film, so that was helpful to see how she walks and how she moves and her facial expressions. And then there's the public versus the private voice. When she was doing interviews it was a lot more girly and soft and then when you hear her talking to Schlesinger at home you hear the ice in the glass clinking and the voice is a little deeper and her wit comes out more. So you get this real sense of the two sides.Guerrasio: You mention how long you've been in this business, and you've kept your private life just that. Are you surprised how much celebrities have to put themselves out&#xa0;there in social media now? I've noticed you've kept yourself off of it.Portman: It is interesting just generationally that you see that people are much more comfortable and that's part of life now for this next generation of actors and just people in the world. But for those of us who were living when it didn't exist, it feels like the last thing you want to do. [Laughs] It's so much unwanted interest in your privacy that you don't want to invite anymore.&#xa0;Guerrasio: I can only imagine how social media would have handled the leadup to the "Star Wars" movies you starred in.Portman: Oh, yeah. And you see the amount of bullying and negativity that goes on that is really, really intense and I feel lucky that I came of age before all of that came on.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio: So you visited the "Rogue One" and "Episode VIII" sets, right?Portman: Yes.&#xa0;Guerrasio: With your son?Portman: Yes.&#xa0;Guerrasio: What was it like being back on a set of that size? Would you ever do something that big again?Portman: It was so fun to get to visit as, I guess, a tourist. It's fun to get to try all different things and it's fun to get to go back and forth. I think the important thing is who you work with, that makes the experience amazing no matter if it's big or small.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Has your son seen any of the "Star Wars" movies yet?Portman: No.&#xa0;Guerrasio: This is a conversation I have with parents a lot: Do you start with "Episode IV" or do you start with "Episode I" when you introduce your children to the "Star Wars" saga?Portman: [Laughs] I talked about this with a friend of mine. I feel you have to start with "IV" because then all of the revelations - like Darth Vader's the father - are surprises.&#xa0;Guerrasio: I think you're right, but the argument is then, "Well, 'Episode I' is so much tamer."Portman: Well, you know, the thing is "I" is very much for kids, but I think for the story you have to start with "IV."Guerrasio: Does your son even know you're in the movies?Portman: Yes. Other children make that clear.
