<ul><li>Whether it was surviving the second wave or breaking viewership records during Diwali, 2021 was a rollercoaster year for the television industry.</li><li>Broadcasters spent the first half of 2021 recovering from the impact of multiple lockdowns but the festive season helped the industry get back on its feet.</li><li>As we move forward this year, a few industry experts tell us about new opportunities that 2022 will bring forth for the broadcast industry.</li></ul>With cancellations of live events and sports and no scope to produce fresh General Entertainment Content, the broadcast industry faced a huge creative challenge and financial burden in 2020. However, the television industry was quick to find its ace card -- they started re-airing their classic shows and movies to woo their audience. The return of old mythological shows like Ramayan and Mahabharat from the 90s not only led to an exponential rise in viewership but also increased advertisers’ count. These shows soon became the main source of entertainment among Hindi GECs, and both adults and kids watched the epic stories together. With the audiences stuck at home, television was quick to break its viewership records. Doordarshan had announced that Ramayan became the world's most-watched show on April 16, 2020 with 7.7 crore viewers. Doordarshan’s average daily viewers also grew by 62 million. The need for escapism, news updates and knowledge also increased in times of trouble, creating a need for content. As the lockdown restrictions eased in the country, GECs resumed their production in phases and the great advertising carnival of IPL brought the much-needed cheer for the broadcast industry and consumers in September. The year 2020, undoubtedly, had a far-reaching impact on consumer behaviour and their viewing patterns changed in 2021. Despite economic challenges that were accelerated with the second wave of COVID-19, legacy advertisers continued to increase spends on TV and starts-up were the biggest advertisers on IPL 2021. The second wave did take the industry a step back but television recovered gracefully as the festive season began in August. As per BARC, Ad Volumes on TV for September 2021 was the highest since 2019, which was 15%. The highest spurt was observed for Bhojpuri language channels, where ad volumes were more than double that of 2019, and 38% higher than in 2020. While Hindi language channels account for the largest share of TV advertising, Tamil and Telugu language channels witnessed robust growth over 2020. At the same time, with new changes in viewing patterns after the pandemic, over-the-Top platforms also posed a big threat to television viewership. However, broadcast players started realigning their goals, understanding these changing patterns and adopting agile approaches for content development. As a result, broadcasters have been working towards tailor-making their content that is adept to multiple platforms’ front-end user interfaces. This approach accelerated digital transformation in the broadcast industry by a few years and helped us believe that television and digital are indeed capable of growing hand-in-hand in India. This trend will continue to take shape further in 2022 as well. So as we move forward this year, the broadcast industry is optimistic about rising to its full strength together. We spoke to a few industry experts to discuss what lies ahead. Here’s what they said: Abhishek Dutta, South Asia Network Head, POGO and Cartoon Network: Homegrown kids’ content is definitely the one trend to watch out for. In 2021, WarnerMedia India’s kids’ entertainment channels, Cartoon Network and POGO launched several successful shows that celebrate Indian flavors as relevant localized content continues to hold sway among Indian viewers. According to FICCI-EY media and entertainment industry report (March 2021), regional languages will make up 60% of television consumption by 2025. This has dictated our strong hold on the pulse of the Indian audience and is reflected in our continued investment in homegrown content. This trend also means there is a massive opportunity for the wider animation industry sector in India – from creation and production to developing talent. Our fans-first strategy has shaped the “glocal” approach to our kids’ business in India. One that is focused on world-class animation and relatable stories. 100% homegrown shows and international content localized to suit Indian viewing preferences will continue to rule the roost. Anu Sikka, Head of Content Creation, Channel Strategy &amp; Research at Kids Cluster, <keyword id="187712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="viacom18" source="Orion">Viacom18</keyword>: Engaging viewers in a language they best understand is essential in order to deliver great experiences. As content creators, it is important to narrate stories in a way that young dynamic minds can understand, relate and build a strong affinity. In India, with an exponential growth in the consumption of regional language content, viewers are keen on engaging with the characters in a language of their choice, thereby leading to larger brand visibility and deeper engagement levels. An increase in multi-lingual content will be the key driver for growth in the television industry. Curating multi-lingual content will lead to audiences developing an unbreakable bond with the storyline and its characters and further strengthen the relationship with the brand. Ruchir Tiwari, Cluster Head - Hindi Movie Channels, ZEEL: In 2021, there was a lot of acceleration because of the pandemic in terms of content consumption. It is evident in the way many billions of Indians have consumed long form content, multi-language content. Predominantly for the Indian market, expectations of the audience are very, very clear. What this is going to do is force all content makers to make good content. I think, right now, whatever the ratio of good content is -- the success rate was never very high because good content is a complex game plan. Now, 2022, it will be an opportunity as well as a challenge to the content creators to make compelling content and then the creators will start from this point of personal development. For me, compelling good content is a must have. Without that, there is no way out and that's the biggest opportunity we all have as an industry. Simran Hoon, CEO, The Q: With the hyper-dynamic market confusion and change in viewers’ preference, the manner and method of storytelling has gained prominence. Innovation in storytelling is hence the need of the hour and this will be one of the strongest trends that will emerge in the coming year. GEC’s will have to re-strategize to showcase content that is not just original and relevant but also interactive and engagement-driven. Another trend for 2022 is how content on Television is viewed. TV will be seen as a medium of entertainment and not ‘the destination.’ The Q has been an early adopter of this trend and has built itself in a unique style with our multi-platform availability. Anshul Ailawadi, Business Head – Youth, Music and English Entertainment, Viacom18: While 2021 was about optimism and perseverance, 2022 will be about taking bold bets and experimenting with content. The last 2 years have accelerated several shifts in consumer preferences and habits. Creators are now focussing on different feedback loops as markers of success instead of conventional viewership metrics. Content is being consumed in so many ways, it’s hard to assess (accurately) the potential of a story at the time of greenlighting it. We will see new concepts, new storylines and new faces across genres as age-old rules are tested, and at times, even broken.

Trends that will shape the broadcast industry in 2022

Tables have turned. The big fishes now seem like fishes in a pond while small ones have transformed into sharks. 
 After nearly seven years, the soap opera of the <keyword id="397085" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Broadcast-Audience-Research-Council">Broadcast Audience Research Council</keyword> (BARC) India, a joint industry body, got a new twist when it has rolled out first set of data from a new rating system. 
 This can be marked as the beginning of a super innings for the television viewers in India. Under the new ratings, which came out on April 29 this year, the audience of Indian television industry, who happen to be the end consumers will probably reveal a better side of television viewing and consumption of content. <keyword id="2801660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="BARC-India">BARC India</keyword>, when it rolled out the first set of data, felt the way content was measured and monitored would change for better in the future. 
 Television Rating Points (<keyword id="35778" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="TRPs">TRPs</keyword>) had long provided ammunition for television companies to be at each other’s neck. The same TRPs also became a bone of contention between Television Audience Measurement (<keyword id="134892" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="TAM">TAM</keyword>) and the Government of India. Till the time BARC came out with a new method of measuring TRPs, TAM – the agency, was the only avenue to understand the viewer trends and content ratings. TAM’s reports were much coveted, and advertisers would pay hefty sums to get the reports regularly, to book their slots on most popular channels and shows. 
 
In more than one ways, TRPs were small little numbers that ran the industry as 34% of the revenue generated in television industry is through advertising. The standoff between the government and TAM paved way for swifter action by BARC and the new ratings became need of the hour. 
 
There was an apprehension that the standoff may actually cost huge revenues since the matter became sub judice, with TAM possibly not functioning before BARC actually came about. This was when India was about to witness general elections last year. Though this caused a bit of heartburn, all was well covered through the phase and BARC’s new rating system came into existence after nearly 11 months into the new government. 
 
After releasing the new set of data, BARC India has actually changed the rules of the game. Players who till now assumed they were the leaders, turned into mere members of the team; while those who were members, bagged top spots. This has surely had economic repercussions too, in the way games are being designed and players are selected now. The ecosystem has turned completely transparent and that is what is providing the entire transaction a renewed trusted way of engaging in the business of television and advertising. 
 
BARC India has often said it is committed to building a world class television audience measuring system that is scientific and has scope to 
further analyse than having ranks associated with shows or soaps. Though the initial reactions have been enthusiastic and welcoming, there is also an air of skepticism that has been about ‘wait and watch’. This means, some of the players in the industry would rather wait for a set of data to be open to analysis, at the level of individual data, which gives them the space to interpret and make further business plans. 
 
Industry experts point out media planning can never be done on household data alone. Though the new rating system is based on a scientific model that’s recognized under research methodology, such as stratified random sampling technique which has proved its applicability in the area; it would be feasible to assume there is still scope for improvement on this model too. Because, like some of the industry leaders feel, it does not cover all the market segments that are vital for the television industry to survive or stay the front runner. 
 
The first week of BARC numbers, industry experts add, were more or less in line with what they had predicted and expected. As far as the ‘upsets’ are concerned, the channels or shows which moved down the ranking scale, very few have actually caused some furore in their respective fields or channel officers. Pecking order has remained the same, they say. But then, the dumping order has surely changed!

The first digital revolution occurred in the music industry, that witnessed a transition from radio and physical music ownership like cassettes, CDs and music download websites to music streaming digital platforms. A similar shift is happening in the TV viewing habits. Despite the consumption of video on digital platforms being on the rise in the country, the good old television continues to have an edge in terms of penetration and has large headroom left to fill. In 2019, it was the cable TV that led the market followed by satellite and terrestrial television. Indian broadcasting and the cable TV market is anticipated to go through a robust rate of growth in the near future. The major factors contributing to the rise of the market in India are favourable rules and regulations, technological advancements and ever-growing investment opportunities in the broadcasting and cable TV market. The increasing demand for TV sets, especially in the rural areas, is also one of the key factors supporting the rise of this segment. With the entry of various Multi System operators (MSOs) in recent times, India has witnessed a surge in the active subscriber base. Also, the TV industry needs to devise a way to bring down the inventory wastage by designing campaignsthat are more targeted towardsthe relevant audience, as is already being done by the digital advertisers.Soon, the TV industry will witness the rise of more event-based programming such as screening of live sports and events (award shows, news, concerts, etc.). Similar to the shift in the TV industry scenario, in the coming times, there will be another revolution in the digital space with the emergence of gaming and interactive shows. Summing it up Television is and will continue to be the biggest medium for the foreseeable future in India. For the next 10 years at least TV and appointment viewing will continue in the country. And the reason behind this is that TV is extremely affordable. The numbers definitely showcase a strong growth in the TV universe. Even for brands looking to advertise, TV shall remain the preferred medium of choice and this behaviour will not change so suddenly.

How the digital revolution is leading the path to revival of the television industry

<keyword id="6358309" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toshiba">Toshiba</keyword> and <keyword id="79287" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="sharp">Sharp</keyword>, two of Japan's popular electronic brands, are all set to re-enter India after changing hands. <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword>, having acquired Sharp, will relaunch smartphones, televisions, air purifiers, air-conditioners and other appliances in India in coming two months. On the other hand, <keyword id="3469194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skyworth-Electronics">Skyworth Electronics</keyword>, the new Chinese owner of Toshiba, is also devising a new strategy for its entry into the television market of India. 
 
"Both the brands are inactive with no supplies of inventory in the Indian market for the past few months. But both will enter the market before the festive season. Foxconn is already in talks with a distributor and Skyworth too is formalising its plans," a senior industry executive told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/chinese-owners-of-toshiba-sharp-chart-out-mega-india-initiatives/articleshow/53053053.cms">ET</a>. 
 
As they plan to re-enter India, both brands are going to play the pricing game, echoing the strategies that the rest of Chinese smartphone makers have done to enter the Indian market and establish themselves here. 
 
Toshiba Corp has licensed its television business to Skyworth in December 2015 for the Asian market, excluding China, while Foxconn Technology Group from Taiwan acquired the falling Sharp Corp in April for $3.5-billion. 
 
As per industry insiders, these deals show how serious these Far-East companies are, trying to replicate the success they saw in smartphones category to more categories.

New owners of Toshiba and Sharp are planning to relaunch the brands in India

New Delhi: The merger of media assets of Reliance Industries and the India business of global media house the Walt Disney is expected to be complete by the end of the third quarter of this fiscal, according to a regulatory filing by billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led group. The fair trade regulator CCI has already approved the merger of Viacom 18 and <keyword id="19976122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Star-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Star India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Star India">Star India</keyword> and NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) has sanctioned the scheme regarding it. "The companies are in the process of obtaining other requisite approvals for the completion of the transaction and transaction closer is expected in 3Q FY 25," informed Reliance Industries on Monday in its quarter earning statement. The merger of Reliance group-controlled media assets - TV18 Broadcast and E18 - with Network18 Media &amp; Investments has already been sanctioned by the NCLT and was made effective on October 3, it said. Earlier on September 27, the government approved the transfer of licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by media entities of Reliance Industries to Star India. "The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, vide its order dated September 27, has granted its approval for transfer of Licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by <keyword id="19976121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viacom18" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Viacom18" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Viacom18">Viacom18</keyword> Media Private Limited in favour of Star India," it had said. Viacom18 is the holding company that owns the media and entertainment business of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and Bodhi Tree Systems. Both sides are in the final stages of the merger, making some adjustments in the business as per the Competition Commission of India (CCI) directions. On August 30, the NCLT had approved the scheme of merger of Viacom18 Media and Digital 18 Media, holding media and entertainment assets of Reliance Industries with Star India. The scheme had proposed the transfer and vesting of Media Operations Undertaking from Viacom 18 and Jio Cinema into Digital18, which is a subsidiary of Viacom 18. This would be followed by "demerger, transfer and vesting of V18 Undertaking from Digital 18 into Star India". The merger of the media assets of Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Co.'s India business will create the country's largest media empire worth over Rs 70,000 crore. Earlier, the CCI had said it has cleared the "proposed combination involving Reliance Industries Ltd, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, Digital18 Media Ltd, Star India Pvt Ltd and Star Television Productions Ltd, subject to the compliance of voluntary modifications". Viacom18 is part of the RIL group, and Star India is wholly owned by The <keyword id="19986269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Walt-Disney-Company" source="keywords">Walt Disney Company</keyword>. Star Television Productions, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, is owned indirectly by Walt Disney. The CCI, however, did not disclose voluntary modifications in the original deal made by the two parties. As per the deal, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent of the combined entity that will house two streaming services and 120 television channels. Walt Disney will hold the remaining 36.84 per cent stake in the combined entity, which will also be India's largest media house. Reliance Industries has also agreed to invest close to Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals like Japan's Sony and Netflix. Nita Ambani, wife of billionaire and RIL Chairman <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, will head the joint venture, while Uday Shankar will be the vice-chairperson.

It has actually nudged the Bollywood industry," said Chadda. Before her stint with Prime Video’s hit series on IPL, Chadda was known to play the off-beat roles like Bholi Punjaban in Fukrey - a hit Bollywood franchise. Later, she became one of the first few Bollywood actors to experiment with web series. Good TV shows from the DD era For Chadda, web series will bring bcl quality content like Hum log or Duniya which were a part of Indian TV, before they became mass entertainers with soap operas. Like many of her generation, she could not relate to Hindi television series and shifted to American shows. "There was a huge gap between the content I wanted to watch on television to what was available for my parents. When Inside Edge was offered to me, there was no Amazon Prime in India. When I said I will be doing this new web series, people were like yeh kaun dekhega (who will watch this?. But now, they are forced to take part in it," says Chadda, at the 14th India Digital Summit of IAMAI. Bollywood wants to be in par with OTT platforms A lot of talented Bollywood actors are finding a second coming in the original web series -- like Shefali Shah from Delhi Crime or Pankaj Tripathi from Mirzapur. "Two years ago, people used to say digital is the future. Now, it is the present. Some are exploiting the lack of censorship, while some are finding a balance. The production houses that are known for television, they tend to create shows on digital that are similar to television,” said Chadda delivering a critique on the quality of web series. According to Celebrity Brand Valuation Study 2019 by Duff and Phelps, web series are now attracting the best of Bollywood - including actors and directors. Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, and Zoya Akhtar are creating content exclusively for GenOTT, the report released on February 4, said. “OTT has changed my life because suddenly my audience is everywhere. It empowers me to be more complex, denser and [to not have] to explain so much. Reflecting the view of the majority, the survey for the month of October reveals that media consumption remains the same for 48% of the families while the same has increased for a 25%. In addition, a combined 82% said that they had seen more ads on TV and Digital platforms over others. The November net CSI score, calculated by percentage increase minus percentage decrease in sentiment, was recorded at +9, up from +7 last month and rising at a constant pace over the last three months, indicative of a positive shift in consumer consumption metrics. The sentiment analysis delves into 5 relevant sub-indices – Overall household spending, spending on essential and non-essential items, spending on healthcare, media consumption habits &amp; mobility trends. This month, Axis My India’s Sentiment Index also delved deeper to understand consumers view on varied issues of national interest. These include privatisation of loss making public sector companies like that of Air India, views on economic recovery by 2022, alternatives to rising fuel prices, investment preferences, sentiments around Diwali and on brand advertisement placements. The surveys were carried out via Computer Aided Telephonic Interviews with a sample size of 10430 people. 62% belonged from Rural India while 38% belonged from urban counterparts. Commenting on the October report, Pradeep Gupta, CMD, Axis My India, said, “With the festivities at its peak, one can easily witness consumer’s excitement in terms of loosening their purse strings for varied expenses and experiences. While Diwali has triggered spending on products of personal indulgence (like 2-wheeler/4-wheelers or jewellery) and household items, the upcoming festivities and enthusiastic consumer sentiment will further set the momentum for the last half of this year. In addition, one can also witness a transition in terms of preferences amongst consumers’ like opting for EVs or cheering for privatisation of loss making companies. The growth of digital as a medium of advertising overtaking Print &amp; just after TV reflects the change in media consumption habits which was triggered by the pandemic. Lastly our survey shows that a vast majority of India is still not investing in this age of cryptocurrencies, it would be interesting to see how financial players beyond traditional banks can capture and convert their interests for investments using varied instruments.” Key findings: · Overall household spending has increased for 63% of families which reflects an 7% increase from the last month. For 73% spends on non-essential purchases remain the same which reflects an uptick of 3% from last month. The non-essentials November net score therefore lies at +9. The trend on spends on discretionary products reflect a fine balance between caution and indulgence. · With more exposure to outside activities, importance of health bounced back quickly. Consumption on health-related items increased for 47% of families as compared to 44% last month. The health score which has a negative connotation i.e. the lesser the spends on health items the better the sentiments, has a net score value of -27. · Consumption of media remains the same for a majority of 48% families and increased for 25% of the family, reflecting an overall Net score of -2 as compared to base value of 0 for the previous month. · Mobility net score reflects a constant improvement over the last four months. 88% families said that they are going out the same or more on getaways/staycations /mall/restaurants, with travel bans being lifted and double vaccination providing easier movement opportunities. The overall mobility score is at -4 which is an improvement over last month which was at -5. This reflects slow but consistent progress in people’s sentiments for engaging in out of home activities On topics of current national interest: · While the long awaited sale of Air India to the Tata group reflected a hopeful future for the airline. Axis My India further gauged consumer’s sentiment on whether or not the government should privatise other loss making public sector companies. 46% is in agreement to privatisation of such companies while 36% disagreed with this view. · When asked if economy/livelihood and business is expected to bounce back by January 2022, 41% believes that the same is possible and Southern India being more optimistic with 54% agreeing to this. · With rising prices fuel being a concern, 48% are optimistic of shifting to electric vehicles wherein 33% and 15% said that they will consider buying a 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler respectively in this segment. The younger age group of 18-35 have a more likelihood, with 53% in agreement to an EV shift. · In terms of brand advertisement placements, 44% and 38% of the consumers said that they have majorly seen ads on <keyword id="6357922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="television" source="Orion">Television</keyword> and on Digital platforms respectively. Simultaneously, TV viewing individuals also witnessed an increase of 6.7%, reaching 892 Mn from 836 Mn in 2018, an increase of 57 million individuals in 2020. TV Owning Female population grew by 7%, while male population grew by 6%. In terms of age-groups, the highest growth was witnessed in the “kids” category (age 2 to 14) at 9%. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Markets" text="Markets">Markets</cmsannotation> TV households in Urban markets grew by 4% from 87.8 Mn in 2018 to 91 Mn while Rural markets have grown by 9%, up from 108.9 Mn to 119.2 Mn in 2020. While TV households across India grew by 6.9%, HSM grew by 8% outpacing All India as well as the South states which grew by 5%. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="NCCS" text="NCCS">NCCS</cmsannotation> As the Indian population continues to move up the socio-economic pyramid, changes are also observed in the NCCS profile of TV households. As per the TV UE-2020, the proportion of NCCS A and B has increased to 27% and 31% respectively while NCCS DE has further contracted to 9% of TV households in the country. Experts say although sales of LCD and LED TV sets have grown 28 per cent annually in the last five years, flat panel TVs are yet to replace CRTs completely,” Marwah told Business Insider.

“We believe in paying for what you get, hence our televisions are priced according to the technology provided therein. Moreover, we chose to keep the price a budget one as we look to approach the masses and make our television available to all,” said Marwah.

In a letter to Revenue Secretary <keyword id="9938032" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-bushan-pandey">Ajay Bushan Pandey</keyword>, the ICEA said that the reduction of custom duty on open cell from 5 per cent to zero per cent till September 2020 has given a huge fillip to domestic manufacturing of <keyword id="428513" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="LED-televisions">LED televisions</keyword> and led to reduction in imports from ASEAN countries. It has sought an extension on the zero duty on open cell imports for three years. Citing the Ministry of Electronics and IT's recent proposal to to impose duty of 5 per cent on open cell panels and bring pure cell to zero per cent in a bid to encourage the process of polariser film and COF bonding for open cell, the industry body said that it is concerned about its implementation as the anomaly in differentiation of open cell with bonding and open cell without bonding -- pure cell -- still remains a challenge. The industry body, representing LG, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and Micromax among others, warned of the growth of the grey market if the proposal is put into effect. "If the duty on open cell is not extended beyond September 2020, it will again lead to high imports of LED TVs under FTA, a huge blow to the Make in India programme of the Government of India. It will have an adverse impact on the Indian domestic manufacturers and the EMS companies," the letter by ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said.
