TBIJ spoke to nine moderators who shared their experience but requested that their identity remained secret for fear they might lose their jobs, or risk future employment prospects. All names have been changed, according to the outlet.Carolina, a former TikTok moderator who worked remotely for Teleperformance, a Paris-based company offering moderation services and earned $10 a day, said she had to keep her camera continuously on during her night shift, TBIJ reported. The company also told her that no one should be in view of the camera and was only allowed a drink in a transparent cup on her desk.Carolina said the situation was "terrible" because she lived with her family. "So I felt very guilty telling them, 'please don't pass behind the camera because I could be fired.' Teleperformance is especially paranoid with people seeing what we do."A TikTok spokesperson told Insider in a statement: "We strive to promote a caring working environment for our employees and contractors. Our Trust and Safety team partners with third-party firms on the critical work of helping to protect the TikTok platform and community, and we continue to expand on a range of wellness services so that moderators feel supported mentally and emotionally."Neither TikTok nor Teleperformance responded to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism's detailed list of allegations. Teleperformance, which has more than 42,000 workers in Colombia, did not respond to Insider's request for comment. Current moderators shared with TBIJ that they had to clock in and out and log any breaks on an app called Timekeeper – but they didn't confirm whether they had to work with their cameras on. Another former TikTok moderator, Carlos, told TBIJ it was a video of child sexual abuse that had traumatized him. The video showed a girl of five or six years old: "She was dancing, like pointing her back to the camera, it was so close."Luis, 28, worked night shifts moderating videos for TikTok. He listed to the outlet the kind of content he sees regularly: "Murder, suicide, pedophilia, pornographic content, accidents, cannibalism."He recalled seeing one video taken at a party, with two people holding what initially looked like pieces of meat. When they turned around, it appeared they were holding skin and gristle flayed off human faces. One former employee, identified in the report as Nasser, told Forbes he worked on a team that helped TikTok's artificial intelligence identify content that wasn't allowed on the platform. Nasser alleged he and his colleagues were shown sexually explicit images and videos of children as part of their training at the company..As TikTok has grown in popularity in recent years it has outsourced much of its content moderation to outside companies that hire staff to manually review videos that may violate the platforms' policies on graphic content. Much like with <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/judge-oks-85-mln-settlement-facebook-moderators-ptsd-claims-2021-07-23/">Facebook before it</a>, many of these content moderators have reported experiencing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-content-moderation-jobs-telus-international-graphic-videos-ptsd-2022-5">significant mental trauma</a> and alleged that TikTok failed to adequately equip them for the job. Another former Teleperformance employee, Whitney Turner, told Forbes she worked at the company for more than a year and left in 2021. Turner said she had access to a spreadsheet called the "Daily Required Reading," or the "DRR," which was accessible by hundreds of Teleperformance and TikTok employees, according to the report. This spreadsheet had examples of content prohibited by TikTok and included images of naked and abused children, she told the outlet. "I was moderating and thinking: This is someone's son. This is someone's daughter. And these parents don't know that we have this picture, this video, this trauma, this crime saved," Turner told Forbes. "If parents knew that, I'm pretty sure they would burn TikTok down."Turner said that she turned the document into the FBI and met with an agent in June, according to the report.A TikTok spokesperson told Insider on Thursday its training materials provide textual descriptions but not visual examples of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) but added that it worked with external companies that could have unique practices. "Content of this nature is abhorrent and has no place on or off our platform, and we aim to minimize moderators' exposure in line with industry best practices," the spokesperson said. TikTok's training materials have strict access controls and do not include visual examples of CSAM, and our specialized child safety team investigates and makes reports to NCMEC." The NCMEC is the <a href="https://www.missingkids.org/ourwork/impact">National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children</a>, a non-profit organization founded in the 1980s that serves as the "national clearinghouse and resource center for information about missing and exploited children," according to the organization. Companies like TikTok are legally required to report CSAM found on their platforms to the NCMEC. Representatives for Teleperformance did not return Insider's request for comment sent Thursday. Akash Pugalia, the global president of trust &amp; safety at Teleperformance, told Forbes it did not use explicit videos of child abuse in its training and did not have those materials in its "calibration tools." <h2>TikTok's moderators allege PTSD and take legal action</h2>Employees of other contractors that TikTok uses to moderate its content have also sounded the alarm on disturbing content they were forced to view for work. Several current or former moderators, who spoke to Insider in an article published in June, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-content-moderation-jobs-telus-international-graphic-videos-ptsd-2022-5">detailed a culture of overwork and surveillance</a> while employees at the Nevada office of Telus International.Two people who spoke with Insider said they had been diagnosed with PTSD since working as a TikTok moderator. Candie Frazier, a moderator who spoke to Insider, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-content-moderator-suing-extreme-graphic-violence-bytedance-ptsd-2021-12">sued the company</a> and said she was forced to view beheadings, accidents, suicides, and child abuse materials, Insider previously reported. "Moderating for TikTok hurt," Frazier, who worked for the third-party company Telus International, told Insider earlier this year. "It made me lose my trust in people," she added. TikTok is hardly the only social-media giant to have questions raised about its CSAM moderation practices. Meta earlier this year came under fire after a report from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/31/business/meta-child-sexual-abuse.html">The New York Times</a> said moderators working on behalf of the company were told to "err on the side of an adult" when they can't tell someone's age in a photo or video. A company spokesperson confirmed the policy to the Times. Moderators for social-media behemoths have <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/25/18229714/cognizant-facebook-content-moderator-interviews-trauma-working-conditions-arizona">long sounded</a> the alarm on the perils of moderating disturbing content for platforms. The Verge in 2019 reported that some moderators working to moderate content for Facebook were developing symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder after leaving the job. A Facebook contractor describes what it's like working on the company's customer service front lines

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="8441742" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon-ring">Amazon Ring</keyword> <keyword id="6371359" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="contractors">contractors</keyword> spoke to NBC News about worsening working conditions at a call center in the Philippines, after photos first surfaced in April of employees sleeping on the floor between shifts. </li><li>The contractors reportedly said <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> does not allow them to work from home over security concerns, and the shuttle service offered is not reliable.</li><li>The report detailed a lack of social distancing measures at the facility and poor sanitation, sometimes only amounting to a wipe down using a bucket of water and a towel.</li><li>Dozens of workers have developed flu-like symptoms as many are faced with either showing up to work or sacrificing pay to avoid contracting COVID-19, according to the report. </li><li>"Ring does not tolerate violations of our vendor Code of Conduct ... If we find any violations, we will take the appropriate steps to address them, including immediate corrective action," an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider. </li></ul>Contractors for Amazon's Ring division say they're still scared to go to work six months after first complaining of poor working conditions, per a Thursday <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/we-don-t-have-choice-amazon-ring-call-center-workers-n1243439">NBC News.</a>In April, workers at a Philippines call center said they were working under "subhuman" conditions, with no room for social distancing and limited sanitation. Photos of employees sleeping on the floor of the center in close proximity to each other were circulated online as workers said they felt pressured to stay near the office to make it to their shifts on time, as the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/8b7bc787-4f33-4909-85f0-8df36d165b69">Financial Times</a> reported. Teleperformance, the contractor who employs the workers at the call center, said it would address their complaints.But according to workers who spoke to NBC News, working conditions have only gotten worse as the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> disease continues to spread across the globe. Teleperformance stopped letting employees sleep on the floor of the call center, according to the report, but the contractors says it didn't offer an alternative.In an emailed statement, an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider that "nothing is more important than the health and safety of our teams including contractors. Ring does not tolerate violations of our vendor Code of Conduct, and we also require our vendors to follow government orders and recommendations regarding COVID-19. This includes strict guidelines for social distancing, use of protective equipment, and sanitation. If we find any violations, we will take the appropriate steps to address them, including immediate corrective action."Employee complaints began after Cebu City, where the call center in the Philippines is located, shut down public transit. Teleperformance began offering work shuttles to take employees to and from the call center instead. But workers said the shuttles have unreliable service, sometimes arriving late to pick them up from their homes and taking too long to drop them off after the end of their shifts. Amazon Ring said it does not allow them to work from home over what it told NBC is "the data security and privacy of our customers," a common reason tech companies, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/1/21497789/facebook-content-moderators-accenture-return-office-coronavirus">like Facebook</a>, have given for bringing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-moderators-return-to-office-2020-10">some, mostly contract employees back to offices</a> while transmission rates remain high and many areas are still under some form of work-from-home orders. Still, the contractors for Ring told NBC they aren't able to access confidential personal information without a customer's consent.Dozens of the call center's employees have developed flu-like symptoms, which are characteristic of COVID-19 infection, according to the report. Workers say that workstations aren't properly sanitized, and when shifts overlap, it's difficult to socially distance. Cleaning staff comes through sporadically and when they do, it's with a bucket of water and a towel, employees told NBC."People are scared because we don't know who has it and who doesn't have it," a contractor told the outlet. "But people don't have a choice, because it's either you will be infected or you will die of starvation."A spokesperson for Teleperformance told NBC that the "safety and wellbeing of our employees will always be the top priority" and that it offers health insurance for sick employees.The report highlights tech's ongoing tendency to outsource much of its operations, resulting in criticism from some who say <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-apple-worker-exploitation-remote-customer-service-arise-solutions-2020-10">workers are being exploited</a> for the sake of cutting costs for the billion-dollar companies. 'You will be infected or you will die of starvation': Amazon contractors reportedly say their office is still unsafe months after first complaining of 'subhuman' conditions

Mumbai, Mar 4 () The USD 572-billion private equity giant Blackstone, which has pumped in USD 15.5 billion into scores of companies in the country since its entry 15 years ago, is bullish on the Indian market which has given it the strongest results globally. Of the USD 15.5 billion of total investments it has made into 40 companies (and only six record-breaking profitable exits), as much as USD 6 billion flowed into the country in 2019 alone, a record high for the firm. Addressing a select group of media over lunch here, Stephen A Schwarzman, the chairman, chief executive and co-founder of Blackstone, said, "India has given us the strongest results across the world. And am optimistic this (will) continue going forward." But Schwarzman, known for his 'don't lose money' way of risk taking, did not quantify the returns he has made from the India investments. Since his last formal visit to India in 2006, Schwarzman, who is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on philanthropy, education and the arts, also said the India he visited then is not the India of today. The country has "changed enormously. India is a highly unusual market... despite the problems it is facing today, which is exacerbated by the crisis in the banking system, this market can come around for the better." "India's education sector is doing well, producing seven times more engineers than the US does annually. So it means it has all the preconditions for expansive growth as the economy has reached an inflection point," said Schwarzman, who founded Blackstone 30 years ago with USD 400,000, which has since grown to a USD 572 billion Wall Street gorilla. "Despite some hiccups, growth is happening at a good pace. Last year was a record for us with USD 6 billion investments. I see the same level of investment growth happening this year as well," said Amit Dixit, one of the senior managing directors at Blackstone Advisors India. The PE giant's largest exit was Intelenet Global Services, which was sold to French outsourcing giant Teleperformance for USD 1 billion in August 2018. Blackstone acquired it in 2013 for around USD 385 million and the return was its largest exit in Asia then. Blackstone invested in Intelenet twice in the last decade. It first picked up a stake in 2007 before selling to Selco in 2011.
