The term <a href="http://www.tejas.gov.in/specifications.html">Tejas</a> means ‘radiance’. NEW DELHI: When the <keyword id="6376012" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tejas">Tejas</keyword> light combat aircraft tears into the sky over Bangalore on Friday, its sonic boom will finally herald a major milestone in the long, tortuous developmental saga of the homegrown supersonic fighter. 
 Having clocked almost 2,420 flight tests since its prototype first flew in January 2011, the lightweight multirole Tejas fighter will finally zoom past the initial operational clearance (<keyword id="6354733" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IOC">IOC</keyword>) mark on Friday. For long wary of <keyword id="508910" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-Fighter">the fighter</keyword> being prematurely thrust down its throat, even the IAF will clap this time. 
 "This Tejas Mark-I is much better than a MiG-21 'Bison' on several counts, including weapon-carrying capability and range. But the fighter's full capabilities will emerge only in the Tejas Mark-II version, with a more powerful engine, radar and weapons, which is slated to be ready by December 2018," said a top <keyword id="194542" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-officer">IAF officer</keyword>. 
 But that is in the future. Friday will mark the actual IOC - which basically signifies the fighter is fully airworthy in different conditions, from extremely low temperatures of high-altitude areas to the searing heat of deserts - of the Tejas Mark-I. It will not be the specious one that the combine of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), <keyword id="139969" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aeronautical-Development-Agency">Aeronautical Development Agency</keyword> (ADA) and <keyword id="139970" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hindustan-Aeronautics-Ltd">Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd</keyword> (HAL) passed off as IOC-I in January 2011. 
 
 
 
The Tejas Mark-I fighter, however, will be ready to go to battle only in 2015 once it gets the final operational clearance (FOC), after integration of all weapons and other systems to ensure it can fi re 23mm guns, rockets and BVR (beyond visual range) missiles as well as undergo air-to-air refuelling. As of now, the Tejas can let loose only close-range R-73 air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground laser and unguided bombs. 
 It's a no-brainer that India needs to have its own <keyword id="6500558" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indigenous">indigenous</keyword> fighter in an era where the supremacy of airpower in shaping modern-day battles is unquestioned, and foreign imports can be choked in times of emergencies. 
 But the way the LCA project has meandered over the years, since it was fi rst approved in August 1983 at a paltry cost of Rs 560 crore to replace the ageing MiG-21s, has tested everyone's patience. So much so that TOI in April 2003, just before then PM <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword> named it "Tejas", had suggested it be christened "Jet-Ayu" - 'Ayu' being the Hindi word for age, and 'Jatayu', the bird king who fought Ravana in vain to prevent him from abducting Sita. 
 
Down to just 34 fighter squadrons, IAF is of course still fl ying the obsolete MiG-21s. Due to the huge delay in the LCA project, it still has around 250 MiG-21s in its combat fleet, having further staggered their already long-delayed retirement by at least another five years. Not only has the LCA been in the making for 30 years, with deadlines being missed time and again, its overall developmental cost has also zoomed up to Rs 17,269 crore. This includes the Kaveri aero engine, sanctioned in 1989 at a cost of Rs 2,839 crore, which flopped miserably. 
 Consequently, while the first lot of Tejas will be powered by the American <keyword id="45528" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE">GE</keyword>-404 engines, the Mark-II ones will have the more powerful GE F-414 engines. Over and above the developmental cost, each Tejas will cost around Rs 210-250 crore. So, the induction of 160 Tejas - 120 for IAF, 40 for Navy - will cost another Rs 35,000 crore. 
 
However, defence scientists pooh-pooh all this talk of high costs. 
 "A fourth-generation-plus fighter, Tejas will still be among the cheapest fighters in its class in the world. It's not easy to develop a digital fl y-by-wire supersonic fighter from scratch, especially when India faced international sanctions for several years after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests," said a <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>. 
 Though late in coming, the Tejas is certainly critical for the IAF to meet its lightweight fighter requirements. While the heavyweight fighter category is taken care of by the Sukhoi-30MKIs, the medium range is to be met by the proposed almost $20 billion MMRCA (medium multirole combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 <keyword id="6381048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rafale">Rafale</keyword> fighters. 
 "The MMRCA and Tejas squadrons are very critical for us to maintain our deterrence capability. Otherwise, our force levels will go down rapidly," says <keyword id="483998" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-Chief-Air-Chief-Marshal">IAF chief Air Chief Marshal</keyword> NAK Browne.

Twitter starts testing the edit button, will launch it this month for paid users

On display at the lawns of the Parliament's Library Building-- as part of the three-day long exclusive exhibition for the lawmakers, is the massive ARJUN main battle tank (MBT), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army to fight adversaries along our Western border areas especially the plain and desert areas of Punjab and further South. 
 However the reality is a bit bitter. Facing serious issues of weight, unfortunately the <keyword id="183999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-tank">ARJUN tank</keyword> remains largely unsuitable for being operated on border areas except for small stretches in the Barmer-Jaisalmer area. 
 While the battle tank’s first variant ARJUN MkI weighed 62 tonnes (and this is the one on display), the second one – or the so called next gen, ARJUN MkII weighs even more at around 68 tonnes. As none of the bridges close to border areas can carry anything more than 60 tons, the usage of <keyword id="3542293" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="arjun-mbt">ARJUN MBT</keyword> to reach the border areas to fight wars remains a big question mark. 
 
So effectively, the weight of the tank prohibits its use along most of the b0rder areas. Interestingly, a senior defence ministry official sarcastically but rightly commented, “If this tank can’t cross bridges and kill enemies on the border, who is it than aiming at?...Pakistan or the Parliament?” 
 
Taking note of this deficiency, defence minister Manohar Parrikar has already ordered a study (involving all the stakeholders) to bring down the weight of this tank to 55 tonnes. According to defence ministry sources, Parrikar has openly expressed his unhappiness on the issues crippling the ARJUN MBT. 
 
While weight is a major issue, other deficiencies of MBT Arjun includes its indigenisation content and also availability of ammunition that remains miniscule. Most of the ammunition that this MBT should fire is unavailable. 
 
Also while Parrikar is pushing the Make in India program very hard, it is unfortunate that the Arjun MkI has less than 30% of indigenisation content. In ARJUN MkII, instead of the import content going done, it has only gone up, reveal officials. Weight too has gone up to 68 tonnes, a folly DRDO has accepted during an interaction with reporters on the sidelines of the 9th Defence Expo in Goa this March. 
 
Dr S Christopher DG, DRDO gracefully accepts that the weight of Arjun is on the higher side. "Army says there are bridges where MkII might find it difficult (to move). This is the reason why we have developed the other bridge and made our tank go over it again and again when displayed at DefExpo. We are trying to tell the army that even if we may not be able to use it as it is everywhere, there definitely can be places where it can be used," Christopher was quoted in a news report in its online edition dated March 29. 
 
The report further noted that the history of indigenous tank building has been an acrimonious affair with the army and DRDO having bitter differences over the road ahead. While the army relies largely on the Russian-made T72 and T90 tanks, the DRDO believes it isn't being a fair opportunity to develop its product. After a protracted struggle, 124 MkI ARJUN tanks were commissioned into the army. 
 
Time For Some Reality Check: So while we are proud of various inventions by DRDO, BrahMos missile (jointly made with L&amp;T) being one, issues surrounding the ARJUN MBT are serious as a huge amount of public funds have gone into it. So our suggestion to DRDO is to look at reducing the weight of this tank that has been designed to fight wars on the borders and not just be stationed on the beautiful lawns amidst the kota stoned walls of the Parliament. 
 
This DRDO exhibition, being held at the Parliament Library Building, will display numerous state-of-the-art defence technologies, products and systems developed by various DRDO laboratories indigenously, which includes the BrahMos missile, the ‘Arjun’ main battle tank, AEW&amp;C (Airborne Early Warning and Control System), Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher ‘Pinaka’, Remotely operated vehicle, NBC Recce Vehicle, Wheeled Armoured Platform (WHAP), Laser Ordnance Disposal System (LORDS), Varunastra Torpedo, Mobile Automatic Robotic System (MARS), Various type of Radars and other products. The Speaker of Lok Sabha Smt Sumitra Mahajan will inaugurate the three-day long exhibition on the 3rd of August at 1000hrs. 
 
Through this exclusive exhibition, the Members of Parliament from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are expected to visit the exhibition to get a first-hand account of huge work undertaken by DRDO and their successful implementation. 
 
During the exhibition, DRDO will also organise a virtual reality display of Arjun Main Battle Tank, BrahMos Missile, AEW&amp;C (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) &amp; LCA-Tejas.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Prompt engineers are the hot job of the AI age.</li><li>Demand for the role has skyrocketed amid the ChatGPT hype.</li></ul>Kelly Daniel loves her job.A former media executive, Daniel now works as a prompt director at software company Lazarus AI.Day to day, she coaxes AI models like OpenAI's GPT, utilizing natural language to manipulate the model into spitting out exactly the content she wants. It's like there's a hidden code waiting to be cracked, she says."I just find it really interesting, really fun — it's like solving a word puzzle," Daniel, whose résumé also includes a prompt engineering role at LinkedIn, said.Daniel is part of a wave of a new kind of AI engineers — those without formal tech skills. Known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-become-an-ai-prompt-engineer-skills-needed-2023-6">prompt engineers</a>, anyone from marketing professionals to commercial lawyers can be qualified for the buzzy new job.UK-based Tanya Thomas, a lawyer turned prompt engineer, views her job as a creative one."It's exactly like a Rubik's cube," Thomas said regarding the prompting of AI models. "You get one side all green, and then the other side's messed up, and you have to change it in a constant, iterative process."She says the role has even brought out a creative side she didn't know she had when working in the prescriptive, often black-and-white legal world.Demand for prompt engineers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-creating-jobs-prompt-engineer-chatgpt-2023-11">has been skyrocketing</a> amid the AI hype, and salaries are echoing the excitement. Last year, AI lab Antropic made headlines after <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2023/03/09/new-ai-jobs-chatgpt-like-assistants/">advertising a $300,000 salary</a> for its in-house prompt engineers.The rise of the role has become an emblem of job positivity amid the AI boom. An example wheeled out to prove the "AI will create new jobs too" rhetoric often emphasized by tech companies in response to job-stealing fears.Yet, despite the money, noise, and excitement — some say the role is merely a passing fad.<h2>A catch-all role</h2>Prompt engineering is a complicated term.The title comes from a more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prompt-engineering-ai-chatgpt-jobs-explained-2023-3">traditional tech job</a>, one that includes fine-tuning large language models. Since OpenAI's ChatGPT sparked an increase in AI products prompted by natural language, the job title has expanded to include many other responsibilities.Some are critical of the new role, particularly when occupied by non-technical candidates.Critics have likened the role to hiring an expert in Google Search at the turn of the century, predicting the expertise will become so normalized it will no longer be considered a skill.Conor Grennan, the Dean of Students at NYU Stern School of Business, is among the critics."There's a sense you have to know something you just don't need to know," Grennan said in an interview following a passionate LinkedIn post about the rise of non-technical prompt engineering.The job is particularly frustrating because Grennan, who helps companies incorporate AI, views tools like ChatGPT as one of the most democratizing technologies in history.He said the skill set and experience of the employee using the AI is what really matters, not how people are simply prompting the model. For Grennan, the main way to improve AI-generated content is to learn how to talk to it like a human, which means getting over the mental block of chatting with a machine.Grennan said bringing in external workers with no knowledge of the company simply to prompt models may even be counterproductive, slowing down workflows by creating an unnecessary block between the AI and the workers with specific skills."It's a bit like hiring someone that understands how to Google better," he said. "The problem is that the person already in the company and doing the work is the one who has the expertise necessary."<h2>Leave the prompting up to the AI</h2>Some research suggests an even deeper problem with the trendy new job.A recent research <a target="_blank" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.10949">paper</a> from Rick Battle and Teja Gollapudi at cloud computing company VMware suggests that prompt optimization may be best left up to AI models rather than the humans using them.The pair found that automatic prompt optimization — getting AI models to refine prompts themselves — produced far better results than anything a human engineer could achieve."You should never handwrite a prompt again," Battle said of the research. "Just write basic instructions, and then let the model optimize the prompt for you."Battle called prompt engineering roles "ridiculous" and a flash in the pan. He said prompting AI models is an important skill, not a job."The only people who should be working on this kind of stuff are people with formal data science backgrounds because the fundamentals here have not changed one iota," he said.Separate research from Vasudev Lal, an AI scientist at Intel Labs, reached a similar conclusion.According to Lal, automated prompt engineering consistently outperforms metrics achieved by human engineers."That's not very surprising because human engineers will only be able to explore a small fraction of the parameter space," he said.AI prompt optimization is still expensive, but it's getting cheaper as the models get more advanced, Lal said.Lal called the need for human prompt engineering a "temporary blip."The more people engage and give feedback to the models, the faster they will get to a point where they can understand human intent, he added.<h2>A headstart for workers</h2>Most prompt engineers aren't immune to the controversy surrounding their roles.Yinuo Chen, an engineer based in an advertising company in Beijing, says she already views her role as uncertain due to the pace of AI development."These tools are available to everyone — even my dad uses them sometimes," she said. "I don't know if this role will be so technical that it would require an actual official role for it in the future."While Chen thinks there'll always be a need for human agency in AI prompting, she's nervous about the technology's effect on the job market in general."I was definitely scared that generative AI would change the way that content creation works in general," she said. "AI changes so fast, and it's very difficult to pinpoint where it's going even in the next month."Daniel also knows what the critics think of her new job — but she isn't bothered."I definitely have a drive to stay ahead of the curve, and part of that is getting in this early," she said of her role.Working in lay-off-prone industries like tech and media has taught that her no job is 100% stable. (Daniel was laid off from a role at Meta in the first round of Mark Zuckerberg's cuts.)She said she's even encouraged by some of the criticism, even the comparison with Google Search."I think different standards will emerge between what everybody can do and what the expert prompting engineers can do," she said.All in all, she's feeling confident."Everybody can run a Google Search now, but I can run a better one," she said.
