The term <a href="http://www.tejas.gov.in/specifications.html">Tejas</a> means ‘radiance’. NEW DELHI: When the <keyword id="6376012" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tejas">Tejas</keyword> light combat aircraft tears into the sky over Bangalore on Friday, its sonic boom will finally herald a major milestone in the long, tortuous developmental saga of the homegrown supersonic fighter. 
 Having clocked almost 2,420 flight tests since its prototype first flew in January 2011, the lightweight multirole Tejas fighter will finally zoom past the initial operational clearance (<keyword id="6354733" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IOC">IOC</keyword>) mark on Friday. For long wary of <keyword id="508910" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-Fighter">the fighter</keyword> being prematurely thrust down its throat, even the IAF will clap this time. 
 "This Tejas Mark-I is much better than a MiG-21 'Bison' on several counts, including weapon-carrying capability and range. But the fighter's full capabilities will emerge only in the Tejas Mark-II version, with a more powerful engine, radar and weapons, which is slated to be ready by December 2018," said a top <keyword id="194542" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-officer">IAF officer</keyword>. 
 But that is in the future. Friday will mark the actual IOC - which basically signifies the fighter is fully airworthy in different conditions, from extremely low temperatures of high-altitude areas to the searing heat of deserts - of the Tejas Mark-I. It will not be the specious one that the combine of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), <keyword id="139969" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aeronautical-Development-Agency">Aeronautical Development Agency</keyword> (ADA) and <keyword id="139970" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hindustan-Aeronautics-Ltd">Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd</keyword> (HAL) passed off as IOC-I in January 2011. 
 
 
 
The Tejas Mark-I fighter, however, will be ready to go to battle only in 2015 once it gets the final operational clearance (FOC), after integration of all weapons and other systems to ensure it can fi re 23mm guns, rockets and BVR (beyond visual range) missiles as well as undergo air-to-air refuelling. As of now, the Tejas can let loose only close-range R-73 air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground laser and unguided bombs. 
 It's a no-brainer that India needs to have its own <keyword id="6500558" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indigenous">indigenous</keyword> fighter in an era where the supremacy of airpower in shaping modern-day battles is unquestioned, and foreign imports can be choked in times of emergencies. 
 But the way the LCA project has meandered over the years, since it was fi rst approved in August 1983 at a paltry cost of Rs 560 crore to replace the ageing MiG-21s, has tested everyone's patience. So much so that TOI in April 2003, just before then PM <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword> named it "Tejas", had suggested it be christened "Jet-Ayu" - 'Ayu' being the Hindi word for age, and 'Jatayu', the bird king who fought Ravana in vain to prevent him from abducting Sita. 
 
Down to just 34 fighter squadrons, IAF is of course still fl ying the obsolete MiG-21s. Due to the huge delay in the LCA project, it still has around 250 MiG-21s in its combat fleet, having further staggered their already long-delayed retirement by at least another five years. Not only has the LCA been in the making for 30 years, with deadlines being missed time and again, its overall developmental cost has also zoomed up to Rs 17,269 crore. This includes the Kaveri aero engine, sanctioned in 1989 at a cost of Rs 2,839 crore, which flopped miserably. 
 Consequently, while the first lot of Tejas will be powered by the American <keyword id="45528" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE">GE</keyword>-404 engines, the Mark-II ones will have the more powerful GE F-414 engines. Over and above the developmental cost, each Tejas will cost around Rs 210-250 crore. So, the induction of 160 Tejas - 120 for IAF, 40 for Navy - will cost another Rs 35,000 crore. 
 
However, defence scientists pooh-pooh all this talk of high costs. 
 "A fourth-generation-plus fighter, Tejas will still be among the cheapest fighters in its class in the world. It's not easy to develop a digital fl y-by-wire supersonic fighter from scratch, especially when India faced international sanctions for several years after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests," said a <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>. 
 Though late in coming, the Tejas is certainly critical for the IAF to meet its lightweight fighter requirements. While the heavyweight fighter category is taken care of by the Sukhoi-30MKIs, the medium range is to be met by the proposed almost $20 billion MMRCA (medium multirole combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 <keyword id="6381048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rafale">Rafale</keyword> fighters. 
 "The MMRCA and Tejas squadrons are very critical for us to maintain our deterrence capability. Otherwise, our force levels will go down rapidly," says <keyword id="483998" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-Chief-Air-Chief-Marshal">IAF chief Air Chief Marshal</keyword> NAK Browne.

Tejas: A Rs 50,000 crore bird for India

At the press conference of the IIFA Awards, Shah Rukh pulled Karan's leg for being less active on the directorial front. "He hosts chat shows, film shows. Picturein bhi toh bana mere bhai (When are you going to make films, my brother?)" said the superstar, eliciting laughter from the filmmaker. Karan, whose last directorial was 2023's "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani", admitted Shah Rukh was right. "This is sounding so wrong on so many levels for a filmmaker. That I should be making movies. (But) That is exactly what I should be doing," said the filmmaker, who also hosts the popular celebrity chat show "Koffee With Karan". It's like there's a hidden code waiting to be cracked, she says."I just find it really interesting, really fun — it's like solving a word puzzle," Daniel, whose résumé also includes a prompt engineering role at LinkedIn, said.Daniel is part of a wave of a new kind of AI engineers — those without formal tech skills. Known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-become-an-ai-prompt-engineer-skills-needed-2023-6">prompt engineers</a>, anyone from marketing professionals to commercial lawyers can be qualified for the buzzy new job.UK-based Tanya Thomas, a lawyer turned prompt engineer, views her job as a creative one."It's exactly like a Rubik's cube," Thomas said regarding the prompting of AI models. Last year, AI lab Antropic made headlines after <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2023/03/09/new-ai-jobs-chatgpt-like-assistants/">advertising a $300,000 salary</a> for its in-house prompt engineers.The rise of the role has become an emblem of job positivity amid the AI boom. An example wheeled out to prove the "AI will create new jobs too" rhetoric often emphasized by tech companies in response to job-stealing fears.Yet, despite the money, noise, and excitement — some say the role is merely a passing fad.<h2>A catch-all role</h2>Prompt engineering is a complicated term.The title comes from a more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prompt-engineering-ai-chatgpt-jobs-explained-2023-3">traditional tech job</a>, one that includes fine-tuning large language models. Since OpenAI's ChatGPT sparked an increase in AI products prompted by natural language, the job title has expanded to include many other responsibilities.Some are critical of the new role, particularly when occupied by non-technical candidates.Critics have likened the role to hiring an expert in Google Search at the turn of the century, predicting the expertise will become so normalized it will no longer be considered a skill.Conor Grennan, the Dean of Students at NYU Stern School of Business, is among the critics."There's a sense you have to know something you just don't need to know," Grennan said in an interview following a passionate LinkedIn post about the rise of non-technical prompt engineering.The job is particularly frustrating because Grennan, who helps companies incorporate AI, views tools like ChatGPT as one of the most democratizing technologies in history.He said the skill set and experience of the employee using the AI is what really matters, not how people are simply prompting the model. For Grennan, the main way to improve AI-generated content is to learn how to talk to it like a human, which means getting over the mental block of chatting with a machine.Grennan said bringing in external workers with no knowledge of the company simply to prompt models may even be counterproductive, slowing down workflows by creating an unnecessary block between the AI and the workers with specific skills."It's a bit like hiring someone that understands how to Google better," he said. "The problem is that the person already in the company and doing the work is the one who has the expertise necessary."<h2>Leave the prompting up to the AI</h2>Some research suggests an even deeper problem with the trendy new job.A recent research <a target="_blank" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.10949">paper</a> from Rick Battle and Teja Gollapudi at cloud computing company VMware suggests that prompt optimization may be best left up to AI models rather than the humans using them.The pair found that automatic prompt optimization — getting AI models to refine prompts themselves — produced far better results than anything a human engineer could achieve."You should never handwrite a prompt again," Battle said of the research. "Just write basic instructions, and then let the model optimize the prompt for you."Battle called prompt engineering roles "ridiculous" and a flash in the pan. He said prompting AI models is an important skill, not a job."The only people who should be working on this kind of stuff are people with formal data science backgrounds because the fundamentals here have not changed one iota," he said.Separate research from Vasudev Lal, an AI scientist at Intel Labs, reached a similar conclusion.According to Lal, automated prompt engineering consistently outperforms metrics achieved by human engineers."That's not very surprising because human engineers will only be able to explore a small fraction of the parameter space," he said.AI prompt optimization is still expensive, but it's getting cheaper as the models get more advanced, Lal said.Lal called the need for human prompt engineering a "temporary blip."The more people engage and give feedback to the models, the faster they will get to a point where they can understand human intent, he added.<h2>A headstart for workers</h2>Most prompt engineers aren't immune to the controversy surrounding their roles.Yinuo Chen, an engineer based in an advertising company in Beijing, says she already views her role as uncertain due to the pace of AI development."These tools are available to everyone — even my dad uses them sometimes," she said. "I don't know if this role will be so technical that it would require an actual official role for it in the future."While Chen thinks there'll always be a need for human agency in AI prompting, she's nervous about the technology's effect on the job market in general."I was definitely scared that generative AI would change the way that content creation works in general," she said. "AI changes so fast, and it's very difficult to pinpoint where it's going even in the next month."Daniel also knows what the critics think of her new job — but she isn't bothered."I definitely have a drive to stay ahead of the curve, and part of that is getting in this early," she said of her role.Working in lay-off-prone industries like tech and media has taught that her no job is 100% stable. (Daniel was laid off from a role at Meta in the first round of Mark Zuckerberg's cuts.)She said she's even encouraged by some of the criticism, even the comparison with Google Search."I think different standards will emerge between what everybody can do and what the expert prompting engineers can do," she said.All in all, she's feeling confident."Everybody can run a Google Search now, but I can run a better one," she said.

This was announced by the agency’s chairman S <keyword id="2674096" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="somanath" source="Orion">Somanath</keyword> during the Bengaluru Space Expo 2022. The reusable rocket aims to cut costs and will reportedly target the global market. This will help ISRO reduce the cost of launching satellites. "All of us want launches to be much cheaper than what we do today," said S Somanath, chairman of ISRO, during the space expo. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The reusable rocket will bring down the costs" comment="subhead" text="The reusable rocket will bring down the costs">The reusable rocket will bring down the costs</cmsannotation> At present, it reportedly costs ISRO between $10,000 and $15,000 to place a one-kilogram payload into orbit. Somanath, during the expo, said that the agency needs to bring the cost down to $5,000 and even $1,000 in the future. He added that the only way this would be possible is to make the rocket reusable. India does not have reusable technology in the launch vehicle sector. The Indian agency is reportedly already working on technologies that will help it make a reusable rocket. This includes the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD), which was recently tested successfully by ISRO. The IAD performs many tasks, including allowing the recovery of spent stages of rockets. During a launch, a rocket has three stages, the first two are disengaged once their task is completed. IAD will allow ISRO to save the spent stages. “So, it's a big shift from what we do today. I would like to see this take shape in the next few months. We would like to see such a rocket, a rocket which will be competitive enough, a rocket that will be cost-conscious, production-friendly, which will be built in India but operated globally for the services of the space sector," Somanath said. Further, the ISRO chairman mentioned that the space agency will retire the existing launch vehicles being used once the technology is ready. “This should happen in the next few years so that we can retire all those operating launch vehicles (in India) at an appropriate time," Somanath added. After numerous experiments and failures, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has deployed reusable rockets. It is worth noting that the Falcon 9 and <keyword id="612753" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="falcon-heavy" source="Orion">Falcon Heavy</keyword> rockets are only partially reusable. However, SpaceX is trying to develop a Starship-Super Heavy System which will be fully reusable. SpaceX had earlier said that the cost of each launch could be reduced by up to 80% once the technology is fully developed. Musk had said that the refurbishment and reuse of a booster is done for less than 10% the price of a new booster. India’s space agency wants to design and build reusable rockets for the world

35-year-old Tejas visits AIIMS hospital in India’s national capital New Delhi almost every month for his mouth cancer treatment. He stands in a long queue and sometimes sleeps on the floor the previous night to be the first one in the line the following day. 
 
A rickshaw-puller by profession, Tejas has been chewing ‘gutka’ since time immemorial to him. He said a friend had asked him to try it out for fun sake in his early teens. He doesn’t remember when the ‘fun’ turned into a ‘habit’. 
 
“It had become a time pass for me that you are chewing something and pulling the rickshaw. It became a habit and I could not do away with it. Last year I was diagnosed with mouth cancer and I had to completely stop it,” said Tejas as he bought medicines. 
 
Tejas is not alone. Like him, many people get addicted to smoking, chewing ‘gutka’ and other tobacco products are an early age. 
 As India marked <keyword id="6575676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="World-Tobacco-Day">World Tobacco Day</keyword> on May 31, people shared with us why it becomes difficult to stop. 
 
Shadab Malik, an officer-goer who is in his early 30s, said he was in college first year when he took first puff of the cigarette. 
 
“I was really tensed about my results and my friends, who used to smoke that time, asked to take a drag. I took two-three puffs. As I was an amateur, I did cough but it soon became a habit,” he said. 
 
When asked if never thought of quitting it, he said, “After one or two times, smoking became a daily routine for me. I used to smoke two cigarettes then. More cool boys became my friends and I liked it. So eventually it became a habit. Now I think of quitting it but it is really very hard.” 
 
On an average, Malik smokes fives cigarettes every day. 
 
“Generally it starts in teens as a fun thing with friends but soon becomes a habit. Youth takes to this due to peer pressure as a fad or it may also be a way to deal with stress. During exams or while coping work stress or stressful situations and challenges in life, people tend to smoke more and get dependent on it. Smoking no matter in whatever amount is harmful for human consumption,” said senior psychiatrist Dr. Gorav Gupta. 
 
Tobacco habits at a younger age impact health also. 
 
“There are multitude of problems faced by teenagers who indulge in smoking such as chronic cough, fatigue, breathlessness, decreased capacity to perform physical work and last but not the least predisposition to cancer of oral cavity to the lung,” added Dr. Gupta. 
 
According to India’s Health Minister J P Nadda, nearly eight to nine lakh people die every year due to diseases related to tobacco use. 
 
The government in 2010 said that nearly 900,000 Indians die every year of tobacco-related diseases and as per the International Tobacco Control Project estimates, this figure could rise to 1.5 million by 2020 if users do not stop it. 
 
To discourage any forms of tobacco, the government increased the size of health warnings on tobacco products. Nadda said that a slew of initiatives were being taken to reduce tobacco consumption including enactment of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act 2003. 
 
As per Canadian Cancer Society quoted by Reuters, India ranks 136th on a list of 198 countries that use such warnings to deter smokers. 
 
Meanwhile, regular smokers say it is quite difficult to stub it out. 
 
But as the old adage goes, where there is a will, there is a way, doctors say with focus and proper attention, people can do away with the addiction. 
 
“A person who is willing to quit should work hard and whole heartedly towards his goal to quit smoking. They should avoid cues and situations which are associated with smoking or tobacco consumption. Try avoiding friends with whom one frequently smokes. Likewise, at work instead of cigarette breaks take a short nap or a walk in the corridor,” said Dr Gupta. 
 
Dr Gupta expressed that one should be surrounded with positive people and maintain a journal to record how many times they broke the vow of not smoking. 
 
Some even go on to say that people selling tobacco products should be sensitive enough to see to whom they are selling the product to. 
 
“Everybody knows there is an age limit of 18 years but hardly anyone follows it. I have seen schoolchildren smoking. So, the enforcing agencies should also be proactive,” said Vikas Mehra.
