The stars of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cast-shares-best-parenting-and-co-parenting-advice-2022-8"><u>"Teen Mom: The Next Chapter"</u></a> — which follows Lowell, Baltierra, and their castmates from "<keyword id="23560718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="teen-mom-og" source="keywords">Teen Mom OG</keyword> (2009)" and "Teen Mom 2 (2011)" — sat down with Insider to talk about Baltierra's experience using ketamine therapy to address his childhood sexual-abuse trauma.<br /><br />Ketamine is a drug that can be administered intravenously or nasally as a<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ketamine-therapy-depression-treatment-addictive-drug-clinics-2023-1"> <u>painkiller or sedative</u></a>. A doctor may also prescribe ketamine off-label to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ketamine-for-anxiety-how-it-helped-me-2023-7"> <u>treat mental-health conditions</u></a> like depression and anxiety.<br /><br />Because of its anesthetic properties, ketamine is thought to help people access the unconscious mind and process feelings about past events. For some people, dreams, memories, or out-of-body experiences may occur while taking ketamine.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Talk therapy can only go so far</strong></h2>After varying success with<a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families/cognitive-behavioral"> <u>cognitive-behavioral therapy</u></a>, Baltierra explained that he wanted to try something different. He learned that ketamine therapy is legal in his home state of Michigan.<br /><br />"I get to certain points in my life where I feel like I want to do something a little more intense," he told Insider. "Something where I'm forced to dive deeper into my head because I feel like so much talk therapy, it can get repetitive fast."<br /><br />He researched treatment options and recommended that others do the same to find the right therapist and treatment facility. "Ketamine was the first jumping-off point for me to get down to the core issues that I have with my trauma and how it affects me as an adult," he said.<br /><br />Lowell said that she's supportive of Baltierra working through his childhood trauma and believes that ketamine therapy has been beneficial for him. "Everybody's mental-health journey is different, and whatever you feel is going to assist you, like you know yourself the best, so of course, I'm like, absolutely go for it," she told Insider.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Sometimes you have to sit with your feelings</strong></h2>Starting ketamine therapy has been "very enlightening," Baltierra said. "It really helped me bring some trauma to the surface and the coping strategies that weren't working for me." One of these strategies is his tendency to "intellectualize" his feelings.<br /><br />"I would feel a feeling, and then I would intellectualize it by reading books and articles about it," he said. He thought that he could heal and move on by putting his energy into researching mental health rather than dealing with his emotions.<br /><br />"I never actually sat with the feeling and felt it," he explained. "And so, I feel like with ketamine, I can't intellectualize because you're at the mercy of the experience." In other words, he realized he couldn't rely on his usual coping mechanism of using science and knowledge to push away uncomfortable emotions.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Reducing stigma around child sexual abuse</strong></h2>Baltierra hadn't originally planned on speaking publicly about his experience with child sexual abuse. He changed his mind after considering how common it is for men to stay silent about this issue and wanted to break this pattern.<br /><br />"It's kind of scary for me to do it, but I know it's necessary," he said. "I feel like I have a little bit of a responsibility with this platform to be vulnerable and as transparent as possible."<br /><br />As a child, when he first told his peers about the abuse, he was surprised by their reaction. "I would tell stories, and a lot of the dudes would be like, 'Oh, cool, man,'" he said. "So I would pretend, like, I guess this is supposed to be cool even though inside it didn't feel cool. It was traumatic and scary."<br /><br />Lowell praised Baltierra for helping raise awareness about sexual abuse against boys and young men. "I mean, you wouldn't look at a woman who was molested or raped and be like, 'Oh, that's so awesome you've had an older guy do those things to you,'" she said. "It's not a cool thing. It is still trauma. It's all about ending that stigma that just because it happens to boys makes it not that big of a deal, and that's not accurate."<br /><br /><h2><strong>Being a parent can force you to revisit childhood trauma</strong></h2>Like Baltierra, Lowell has sought mental-health support for coping with childhood trauma. What she's learned about herself in therapy has reinforced her commitment to "breaking intergenerational traumas" and ensuring she doesn't pass them on to her three daughters.<br /><br />"As your children become certain ages where you experienced trauma, it can actually bring stuff to the surface for you," she explained. "You might end up getting triggered or having anxiety because of the traumatic experience that happened to you at their age."<br /><br /><h2><strong>Talking to kids about protecting their bodies</strong></h2>As a parent, whether you have a personal history of trauma or not, "sexual trauma should be a talking subject," Lowell said. "These are conversations that everybody should be having with their children."<br /><br />When their now 8-year-old daughter <keyword id="23560719" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nova" source="keywords">Nova</keyword> turned 3, the couple felt it was important for her to start learning how to label her own body parts. "How can you protect your own body if you don't even know about it," Baltierra said.<br /><br />Lowell agreed, saying, "If something were to happen to your kids, and they were to tell somebody, they are using the correct terminology and not a nickname for it." Both parents recommended speaking to your kids at an age-appropriate level and letting their questions guide the conversation.<br /><br />She gave an example of what these conversations sound like with their daughters: "Everybody's got a bubble, and if you feel uncomfortable about somebody coming into your bubble, it's OK to tell them that they're not allowed," she said. "They're not welcome. I don't like that."<br /><br /><h2><strong>Supporting your partner through their journey</strong></h2>In the episode that aired on September 13, Baltierra's therapist invited Lowell to participate in a couple's session as part of his ketamine therapy. Her immediate reaction was wanting to learn more about her husband's experience and what she could do to support him.<br /><br />"I was going into it with a very open mind," she said. "I think it was important for me to hear the things that Ty had learned, so that way you can be that support system for your person. I feel like that's really important."<br /><br />Baltierra agreed, saying that men need to talk about child sexual abuse. "Because when you have unresolved trauma in the body, it will resurface itself in multiple ways."<br /><br />His advice for partners is to approach your loved one with curiosity and compassion. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley talked about their daughter going on birth control.</li><li>Shirley said it doesn't mean he's encouraging her to have sex — he just wants her to be safe. </li></ul><p>On a recent episode of <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cast-shares-best-parenting-and-co-parenting-advice-2022-8">"Teen Mom: The Next Chapter"</a> — which follows Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley from "Teen Mom OG (2009)" — the coparents talked to their daughter, 14-year-old Leah, about deciding to take <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/how-long-does-it-take-for-birth-control-to-work">birth-control pills</a>. In another clip, Shirley sat down with his wife, Kristina, to discuss how their doctor had given Leah a sex-education talk and then suggested she take birth control to help regulate her menstrual cycle.</p><p>Conversations like these aren't new for this parenting trio, Portwood said in an interview with Insider. "Gary, me, and Kristina, we've really tried to build that relationship, so I'm glad Leah sees that support," Portwood said. "She has some pretty tough people around her that can keep guiding her and showing her how to move forward in a positive way in life."</p><p>Portwood explained that shying away from conversations about sex and <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/can-you-take-plan-b-on-birth-control">birth control</a> could come at the expense of a child's mental health, career, and future. "There are so many young girls who are getting pregnant at an even younger age than 14 that birth control should be talked about," she said.</p><p>Shirley agreed, saying that supporting Leah's decision to go on birth control doesn't mean he's encouraging her to have sex. "No, that's me saying, 'Be safe if you're going to make a bad decision.' I'd rather her have the tools if she's going to do something." he said. </p><h2>Having open conversations makes teens feel supported</h2><p>Ultimately, it was Leah's decision to share the discussion on camera. "My daughter had the choice to do it, and people need to have that safe space," Shirley said. However, they thought it was important to share the conversation publicly to help other parents and teens get a sense of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/parenting/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-sex">how these conversations can go.</a> "Parents can say, 'That's a private moment.' But here's the problem: Nobody wants to have a conversation or very few people have that conversation," he said. </p><p>Portwood said she hopes other parents will see Leah's story and have a better understanding of their teens' point of view. "In my mind, Leah is uplifting parents and other teenage girls to speak with their parents and for them to get involved," she said.</p><p>Portwood is impressed by Leah's maturity in handling these sensitive discussions. Even though Portwood has been on TV since she was 18 years old, she said she wouldn't have been able to speak so confidently about sex and birth control at the age of 14. "There are so many eyes on young girls who are going into high school, but as for my daughter, to watch her be so open and honest and talk about her experiences of why she's doing it and feels like she needs that backup support with her parents, it's really kind of a beautiful thing," she said.</p><p>The National Bureau of Economic Research attributed the show in helping to <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.brookings.edu/research/media-influences-on-social-outcomes-the-impact-of-mtvs-16-and-pregnant-on-teen-childbearing/__;!!M9LbjjnYNg9jBDflsQ!Hnb8aDAfponHjOZkRSSKSGg88pKOjgRQhBEpQ9NrjAVhQMEGxNILO9J0lNa5Mpy8kWvXWJTNgI20-6JaMNYQBBEaItd_Fw$" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reduce teen pregnancy to record lows</a> between 2009 and 2010.</p><h2>Provide some guidance but let them live their lives</h2><p>With Leah starting high school this year, Portwood couldn't help reflecting on her own experience as a freshman. "She's a very mature, beautiful young woman and it's so different from how me and Gary were. We were wild, yeah," she said to Shirley with a laugh.</p><p>Shirley explained that boyfriends aren't a priority for Leah at the moment. "She's not dating right now," he said. "She's just focusing on school and cross-country. I even told her maybe we should just <a href="https://www.insider.com/parent-coach-things-to-do-before-school-starts-2023-8">focus on you, school, and making friends</a>. Because boyfriends will come and go, and the friends you make now will be there for a very long time, if not forever."</p><p>Portwood and Shirley have nothing but praise for Leah, saying <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-family-reunion-cast-talks-mother-daughter-relationships-2022-12">they just want her to be prepared for whatever her future holds</a>. "I guess I'm just really proud to see the young lady that she's become and I'm just so hopeful for her future," Portwood said.</p><p>Shirley said it's a learning process to be more hands-off with Leah's routines like waking up and getting ready for school. 'Teen Mom' parents Amber and Gary: It's important to openly discuss birth control and safe sex with our high-school daughter

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13006332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cheyenne-floyd" source="Orion">Cheyenne Floyd</keyword> of "<keyword id="13006333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="teen-mom" source="Orion">Teen Mom</keyword> OG" is raising a daughter with a rare metabolic condition.</li><li>Her daughter, Ryder, has a mild case, so Floyd has been able to focus on supporting other families.</li></ul><p>When my <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-teen-mom-mtv-2018-6">daughter Ryder was born</a>, she was perfect. That was a relief, after a pregnancy full of <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> scares. When a nurse pricked Ryder's heel for the<a href="https://www.marchofdimes.org/baby/newborn-screening-tests-for-your-baby.aspx"> newborn screening</a>, I didn't think anything of it. I was just happy to be holding a healthy baby in my arms. </p><p>Then, two days after we got home, I got the scariest phone call of my life. It was the hospital, telling us to drop everything and come back. Ryder's newborn screening had shown something unexpected, and we needed more testing immediately.</p><p>That call was the first sign that Ryder and I would become experts in a condition I had never heard of. </p><h2><strong>Getting a diagnosis</strong></h2><p>At first, doctors didn't know exactly what was wrong. They just kept telling me to make sure Ryder was eating. Luckily, I was overproducing breast milk, and Ryder was a good nurser. I probably overfed her. </p><p>After some additional testing, Ryder was diagnosed with<a href="https://www.rageregardlessry.org/about-rage-regardless-ry"> Very Long-chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase-Deficiency</a>. VLCAD is a genetic metabolic disorder. On a basic level, it means that Ryder's body can't properly convert fats into energy. </p><p>To keep Ryder healthy, she couldn't have any periods of fasting. I had alarms set every two hours, and for eight months Ryder ate whenever the alarm went off. It didn't matter if she was hungry, <a href="https://www.insider.com/newborn-sleep">if she was asleep</a>, or if I was too tired to see straight — she had to eat to stay healthy. </p><p>By the time Ryder was 8 months old her doctors had good news. She was <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-much-weight-should-a-baby-gain">gaining weight well</a> and had good energy levels, so they determined that she had a more mild case. She started to go longer and longer without eating, and I was finally able to get at least a little bit of sleep. </p><h2><strong>Deciding to speak out</strong></h2><p>That's when I began to transition out of crisis mode and into advocacy. The first eight months of Ryder's life were a blur. I was feeding her every two hours, waking her up at night, and worrying about her even in the few minutes I could have been sleeping. I was a zombie. In fact, my sister, mother, and grandmother set up a schedule so that someone was always around because they were worried that I was too tired to take care of Ryder, and myself. </p><p>In those moments, I felt so alone. Even online there were no support groups and very few resources. My heart broke for the parents who were raising children with more severe VLCAD and those who didn't have the tight-knit support system that I did. </p><p>My family, like many Black families, likes to keep our private lives private. When I told my mom that I wanted to share Ryder's diagnosis, she was apprehensive. She would rather we just deal with things within our home. But I had a platform, and I was beginning to feel like I had it for a reason.</p><p>When I shared Ryder's diagnosis on social media, messages came in from around the world. Suddenly, it didn't feel like VLCAD was so rare, and I didn't feel so alone. </p><h2><strong>The birth of a nonprofit</strong></h2><p>I learned so much reading about the experiences of other families navigating metabolic disorders. Even my family changed their minds. Now they say that speaking out was the best thing I couldn't have done. It's so powerful when we share our stories and come together. </p><p>In 2018, I founded <a href="https://www.rageregardlessry.org/">Rage Regardless Ry</a>, a nonprofit to help families dealing with metabolic conditions. Back when I was pregnant, when doctors thought something was wrong with my baby, friends told me to "rage regardless." At my baby shower, people were saying it again and again. Years later when we needed a name for the nonprofit, it was right there. </p><p>I didn't want to raise money to send it back to a massive hospital. I wanted to put it directly in the hands of families. We help with little things, like bringing in a night nurse to help with frequent feeding or providing support so a mom can have day to herself. Right now,<a href="https://spark.ucla.edu/project/20015"> we're running a campaign</a> to help pay for hospital parking — an expense that adds up quickly and can be a barrier to care for many families. </p><p>We were able to help two families in our first year. In 2020, we were able to help 40. I love to see the organization grow. Seeing more people talk about metabolic disorders, and watching Ryder flourish, has shown me that we can rage on, regardless of what life throws at us. </p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/cheynotshy/"><em>Cheyenne Floyd</em></a><em> is a cast member on MTV's </em>Teen Mom OG<em>. 'Teen Mom' Cheyenne Floyd: After my daughter was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition, I set out to help other families

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The new season of "Teen Mom: Family Reunion" premieres January 3 on MTV.</li><li>Catelynn Lowell, Jade Cline, Kiaya Elliott, and Maci Bookout open up about their family dynamics.</li></ul><p>For over a decade, the "Teen Mom" franchise has been serving up lessons on how to navigate the world of parenting. Now viewers can get a closer look at the dynamics between the moms and <em>their </em>moms in the new season of "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b25ka7BwUBU">Teen Mom: Family Reunion</a>."</p><p>The second season of "Teen Mom: Family Reunion" follows Catelynn Lowell and <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-maci-boookout-talks-about-healing-from-trauma-2022-9">Maci Bookout</a> of "Teen Mom OG" (2009-2021), Jade Cline of "Teen Mom 2" (2019-2022), and Kiaya Elliott of "Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant" (2018-2022), along with their co-stars Cheyenne Floyd and Amber Portwood of "Teen Mom OG," Briana DeJesus and Ashley Jones of "Teen Mom 2," and Kayla Sessler of "Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant."</p><p>Some of the cast's own mothers will be joining the women as they work on their mother-daughter relationships through team-building exercises and sessions with life coach Dr. Cheyenne Bryant.</p><p>Lowell, Cline, Elliott, and Bookout sat down with Insider to talk about what they've learned from their moms about what to do — and what not to do — when it comes to raising kids.</p><h2><strong>'That's </strong><strong><em>not</em></strong><strong> the mom I had growing up'</strong></h2><p>These four moms have seen firsthand that the rules of parenting shift as mothers become grandmothers.</p><p>"I'm like, 'Wow, my mom got weak with those grandbabies,'" Lowell, 30, told Insider. "Whatever happened to the mom that set boundaries or grounded us?" </p><p>Bookout, 31, agreed, saying that when she was a child, if she wanted a sandwich, she had to make it for herself.</p><p>"I'm grateful for that because it made me very independent," she said. "But I watch my mom with my kids, and she's like, 'Do you want a sandwich? I'll cut it into triangles. What about ice cream for breakfast?' This is not the mom that I had."</p><p>For Elliott, her mom's grandparenting style puts her in a no-win situation at home.</p><p>"My mom and my son take sides against me," she said. "So if I piss my son off, he'll go and tell my mom. And I get in trouble when he gets in trouble, and I'm confused as to how that works because I'm a 22-year-old woman."</p><h2><strong>Creating a chaos-free house</strong></h2><p>When Elliot would get in trouble as a child, her mom would throw a sandal at her. Now Elliot practices "<a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-gentle-parenting-and-how-to-follow-it-2021-12">gentle parenting</a>" with her 4-year-old son, Amour, by talking to him and teaching him how to describe his feelings.</p><p>"If he's being impatient, I say, 'Do you remember the word patience?' and he'll say, 'Yeah, it means wait.' I say, 'OK, so do that.' So I'm trying to be a little more communicative," she said. </p><p>Like Elliott, Cline, 25, emphasized the importance of having a good line of communication with her 5-year-old daughter, Kloie.</p><p>"With my childhood, there wasn't a lot of communication," Cline said. "It was like, 'I'm the adult. You're the kid. Listen to what I say,' and no one really had tolerance or respect for children's needs or opinions."</p><p>Cline added: "I learned throughout my childhood what not to do and how to be a better parent and show affection.</p><p>"I remember growing up, we would have to go outside and pick out a switch to get our ass whooped, and I could never imagine doing that with my daughter."</p><p>Cline has spoken about how her <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMZeOo1X-RA">mother has struggled with addiction</a> and substance abuse on the show. Lowell also mentioned what it was like to watch her mother's relationship with alcohol growing up, and how it affected her. Both of them say they feel motherhood has given them a chance to establish healthier relationships with their daughters than they formed with their own mothers.</p><p>"My house is literally chaos-free," Lowell said. "It's <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cast-shares-best-parenting-and-co-parenting-advice-2022-8">super chill and calm</a>. I grew up with an alcoholic mother, so I'm very strict." </p><p>Lowell doesn't drink in front of her kids or allow out-of-control parties at her house.</p><p>"It's a sad reality of growing up in addiction, but I want my home to feel like a safe place for my children," she said. </p><h2><strong>Taking notes from grandma</strong></h2><p>Sometimes it's the grandmas who know best, but it's not always easy to heed their advice, Elliott said.</p><p>"The best advice my mom has given me — that I still don't listen to sometimes — is don't wear your emotions on your sleeve or the world is going to chew you up and spit you out," she said.  </p><p>Aside from words, what sometimes resonates most is the example their moms have set for them.</p><p>Bookout said her single mom taught her how to change a flat tire and fix a toilet.</p><p>"My mom always said, 'I'm teaching you how to do this so you'll never need a man to do it for you,'" she added.</p><p>"Work ethic and making sure that your children are taken care of is something that she taught me, and also showing affection to your children. She was a very affectionate mother," she said.</p><h2><strong>Seeing their mother-daughter relationship in a whole new light</strong></h2><p>Some of the mother-daughter relationships have remained solid over the years, like the one between Elliott and her mom. Elliott described her mom as her support system, saying, "Most of the things I dealt with at 'Family Reunion' were personal things that I had been harboring for a long time that I didn't know were affecting me so bad."</p><p>Other relationships are a work in progress, Lowell and Cline said.</p><p>"I feel like the relationship with my mom — there's always going to be work that needs to be done," Lowell said. "I don't know if we'll ever be super, super close but who knows."</p><p>For Cline, seeing <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-teen-mom-mtv-2018-6">her castmates</a> with their moms made her realize that she didn't have a lot in common with her mom.</p><p>"You think as an adult, you and your mom become best friends," Cline said. "With me and my mom, so much has happened that we just never got there. I'm trying to accept that we're just different people. In 2020, while filming season 9 of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cast-shares-best-parenting-and-co-parenting-advice-2022-8">Teen Mom OG</a>" Bookout witnessed a <a href="https://popculture.com/reality-tv/news/teen-mom-how-maci-bookout-responded-to-gas-station-shooting/">shooting at a gas station</a>. In later episodes, she spoke about experiencing ongoing effects of trauma, which include being hypervigilant and easily startled by loud noises like popping balloons. </p><p>After struggling with <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-leah-messers-daughters-are-in-therapy-2022-4">anxiety</a> and flashbacks from the incident, Bookout realized that she needed to face her emotions head-on and work through them rather than "just recognizing them and hoping they get better," she said. To heal genuinely, she needed to make herself more of a priority in her daily life.</p><p>Bookout's advice for anyone dealing with trauma is "to have patience with yourself. Don't rush or force anything. And don't be afraid to sit with your feelings and create a safe space within yourself."</p><h2><strong>Getting to a better place mentally and emotionally</strong></h2><p>Having the support of her family and friends has helped Bookout move forward since the shooting. Other times, she prefers to work through her feelings on her own, explaining that sometimes it's the only way "to really learn about yourself and how you want to handle things." </p><p>"I don't always need other people around me to know what I'm going through because it's just something I have to figure out," she said, adding that this might look like giving herself 30 minutes a day to be alone with her thoughts and reflect on how she's feeling.  </p><p>"At the end of the 30 minutes you might leave feeling like, 'I have no answers and I'm in the same spot I was when I first sat down,'" she said. "But I think subconsciously, you work through things and let some toxins out when you give yourself a little space and time."</p><h2><strong>Talking to kids about mental health</strong></h2><p>"I don't think there's a time that's too early for people to talk to their kids about mental health and to share their own experiences or struggles," Bookout said. "I feel like it creates an open, safe dialogue with your kids."</p><p>Conversations about mental health started with her 13-year-old son, Bentley, when he was in the first or second grade. Sometimes Bentley would bring things up that had happened at school or conversations he'd had with friends. </p><p>"He's not a kid anymore. Really, he's in the trenches right now," she said, reflecting on what it's like for Bentley, who's currently in middle school and thinking ahead to high school. </p><p>With her younger kids — 7-year-old Jayde and 6-year-old Maverick — talking about mental health started even earlier. "Jayde and Maverick are usually a part of the conversation or at least in the car with us or in the same room so, it's just naturally integrated into parenting because of the conversations we have with Bentley," Bookout said.</p><h2><strong>Knowing when to disconnect from social media</strong></h2><p>For anyone dealing with online bullying or harassment, Bookout recommended disconnecting, at least for a little while. She acknowledged that going offline isn't possible for everyone, especially if they earn a living through social media.  </p><p>If disconnecting isn't an option, Bookout suggested changing your social-media settings and blocking or filtering out specific words or phrases that you consider vulgar or offensive. In addition to tuning out negative comments, she talked about making sure to connect with the right people online.</p><p>"Start following people on social media who love themselves and empower you," Bookout said. "The truest form of human empowerment is watching someone be happy with themselves, but at the same time, they want to take you with them."</p><h2><strong>Speaking publicly about healing </strong></h2><p>Perhaps the one downside to being open about mental health is the vulnerability it takes to share her struggles publicly. "It's scary to talk about it for everyone to see and judge and for them to talk about it," Bookout said.</p><p>"When I sign up to do the show, year after year, it's very much with the intention of being authentic and sharing my true self and my struggles and showing up as me whether it's a good season of life or a hard season of life," she said.</p><p>What's helped her stay true to herself is prioritizing her mental health. She doesn't read the tabloids and comments on social media. "I'm a very headstrong person and I've always been prideful of my ability to know when to care and when not to care," she said.</p><p>Her hope is that, by sharing her story, other people will relate to it and feel less alone in what they're going through. 'Teen Mom' Maci Boookout: When I made myself a priority, that's when the journey of healing genuinely started.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Briana Dejesus, Cheyenne Floyd, and Leah Messer from "Teen Mom" discussed their journeys.</li><li>They agreed that they needed to be more accepting of themselves.</li></ul><p>"A roller coaster" is how Briana Dejesus, a star of "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QUQuyOSZY0">Teen Mom: The Next Chapter</a>," described MTV's newest addition to the "Teen Mom" franchise.</p><p>Cheyenne Floyd and Leah Messer agreed with Dejesus' perspective on the new series, which follows them and their castmates from "Teen Mom OG" and "Teen Mom 2."</p><p>Dejesus, Floyd, and Messer sat down with Insider to talk about how they'd grown since the first season of their show and share their advice for navigating motherhood and co-parenting relationships.</p><h2>Embrace change as a sign of growth</h2><p>"There have been so many changes from becoming a mom at 17 to now being a mom at 30 to teenagers," Messer said.</p><p>She said it had been rewarding to see her 12-year-old twins, <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-leah-messers-daughters-are-in-therapy-2022-4">Ali and Aleeah</a>, becoming young women and to have age-appropriate conversations with them about the pressures of being a teenager, including how to prevent teen pregnancy. Messer said she values open communication between parents and children and felt that this was missing when she was a teenager.</p><p>Reflecting on her evolution on the show, Floyd said, "I look back at my first season, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cheyenne-floyd-help-families-with-rare-condition-2022-1">Ryder was so little</a> — but then I look at myself and think, you were so little too." She said her biggest challenge right now is knowing where to draw the line between giving Ryder everything she wants and making sure she stays humble.</p><p>"I'm still changing and evolving," Floyd said. "It's a weird feeling, but it's great to see my growth and my daughter's growth."</p><p>Dejesus' advice is to appreciate the time you have with your kids. "I'm just trying to soak up what I can and live in the moment," she said, "because time flies by, and the next thing you know the kids are out the door."</p><h2>Be yourself and have fun</h2><p>The women said that while it can feel strange having the cameras around, the kids are a good reminder not to take themselves too seriously.</p><p>Messer said her 9-year-old daughter, Addie, enjoys filming. "She loves being funny and making everybody laugh," Messer said.</p><p>Floyd said Ryder loves being on camera too and recently discovered that not everyone grows up with film crews in their homes. "Ryder tells everybody she's on TV when she walks in the classroom," Floyd said. "I feel like she would be in this world whether or not it was because of me."</p><p>Dejesus said her 5-year-old daughter, Stella, is the same way, running over to the TV whenever she hears the promos for "Teen Mom." Meanwhile, Nova, Dejesus' 10-year-old daughter, "is like, I'm too bougie for this lifestyle," Dejesus said.</p><h2>Give yourself some slack</h2><p>The three moms reflected on the importance of being more accepting of themselves as they've gotten older.</p><p>Messer described acceptance as "being patient with yourself, knowing that you're not perfect and probably will make mistakes as a mom."</p><p>Dejesus said mistakes are part of learning. "You can push forward and realize that those mistakes also made you who you are today," she said.</p><p>For Floyd, it's about trying to instill discipline in her kids while recognizing that she's human and doesn't always make the right choices.</p><p>"I feel like my patience has grown for sure, and Ryder's of the age where she's trying me, so we're battling right now," Floyd said. "The best advice I've gotten recently is to give myself grace as I'm learning, changing, and growing up."</p><h2>Let go of pride and communicate</h2><p>The moms are no strangers to learning how to co-parent with an ex. Floyd said co-parenting had felt like having a full-time job, while Dejesus described it as an ongoing struggle for her family.</p><p>"Co-parenting takes so much work," Floyd said. "But if you're patient, learn how to communicate, and put your pride to the side, then you can make it happen. Keep the kids first."</p><p>Messer said her co-parenting relationship with her exes is "in such a great place today than it was eight years ago." She said that being willing to communicate and learn from each other and putting egos aside had allowed Messer and her kids' fathers to take a major step forward in their co-parenting relationships.</p><h2>Find people who support you</h2><p>From sharing the experience of being young moms to becoming part of the "Teen Mom" universe, the cast members' bond is undeniable. But the women said these relationships aren't always smooth sailing.</p><p>"Within any friendship there's conflict sometimes," Floyd said, "and it can be hard to navigate these dynamics."</p><p>But they said conflict shouldn't deter someone from reaching out for support, adding that having people who uplift you and understand what you're going through can help you feel less isolated as a parent.</p><p>"I love the way we've all connected and continued to grow," Messer said, "and that's why I'm excited for this next chapter."</p>

"Tyler and I are not getting a divorce. Couples go through ups and downs. This baby just wanted to be here. But the couple reaffirmed that they were not ending their relationship.</p><p>"We don't want to see other people," Catelynn told the producer. Everything coming to — and leaving — Netflix in December

Its velour tracksuits and matching oversized bags were everything and everywhere. But Juicy went from making $605 million in sales at its peak in 2008 to being sold for less than a third of that five years later. So, what happened?</p><p>Juicy's story begins with these two ladies, Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy. They met while working at a Los Angeles boutique in 1988. When Nash-Taylor became pregnant, she couldn't find any fashionable maternity clothing. As a solution, she started making maternity pants out of her husband's jeans, which inspired her and Skaist-Levy to start a maternity clothing line, Travis Jeans for the Baby in You. The pair's stylish maternity jeans took off, despite their $89 price tag.</p><p>By the early 1990s, it expanded into a full maternity line. But around 1994, after feeling like they lost touch with the maternity market, the pair decided to pivot to something new: developing the perfect luxury V-neck shirt. Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy focused on four things: fit, fabric, comfort, and color. They both tried on their samples to make sure the V-neck covered the right part of the arm, didn't plunge too deep, and, overall, made your body look as good as possible, things male designers fitting T-shirts on size 0 models maybe weren't taking into consideration. After perfecting their design, they released it in 26 colors under their new label, Juicy Couture.</p><p>When Juicy first started in 1995, the economy was beginning to recover from the 1990 to 1991 recession, and consumers were hungry for expensive, or at least expensive-sounding, products. So Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy wanted the brand name to convey luxury. They also loved the irony of naming their casual T-shirt line "couture." Juicy Couture quickly grew in popularity and expanded to include knit tops, accessories, and a successful Juicy Jeans line. But it wasn't the full-fledged lifestyle brand its founders wanted it to be...yet.</p><p>Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy looked to the brands they grew up with during the '60s and '70s for ideas. Both thought terry cloth was "the most amazing 1970s fabric" and came up with a line of tops and bottoms made from it.</p><p>The silhouette of what would become Juicy's signature tracksuit was created with the same purpose as the original Juicy V-neck: to be as flattering as possible. The zip-up hoodie was designed with front pockets to hide any stomach pooch and cut with an hourglass shape to nip in your waist. Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy also added custom hardware: a J-pull zipper that branded every tracksuit as uniquely Juicy Couture.</p><p>The tracksuit bottoms were originally made with an underwear elastic, but when that proved to be too loose, Juicy's founders switched to a quick cord they'd used for their maternity line. It worked perfectly. Juicy Couture released its now iconic tracksuits in 2001, and they became a phenomenon.</p><p>Not to mention, at $155, Juicy Couture's tracksuits weren't cheap, but they were accessible.</p><p><strong>Julia DiNardo:</strong> The price point was a little bit high for essentially a glorified sweatshirt, but with a little bit of midriff showing, the cool bootleg, and seeing celebrities in some oversized sunglasses wearing it out and about, it kind of met that balance of just-within-reach pricing and somewhat of a luxury item pooled into one.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> And it was seeing celebrities wear Juicy Couture that really drove the brand's success. Around the time Juicy Couture launched, tabloid celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were becoming a national obsession. Tabloids like Us Weekly and People were documenting everything America's favorite stars were doing, and Juicy was able to take advantage of it. Because its founders didn't have the funds for traditional marketing, they got creative, gifting tracksuits to celebrities.</p><p>While this is pretty common today, Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor were one of the first to do it. They didn't find success overnight, but eventually Juicy's tracksuits were being seen on all the right celebrities.</p><p><strong>DiNardo:</strong> The attraction to celebrity culture in the early 2000s is really what contributed Juicy to become such a popular brand. It really was the height of: "Celebrities! They're just like us." Seeing Britney Spears go get a cup of coffee at Starbucks in her Juicy Couture tracksuits, seeing Paris Hilton shopping all over town in her Juicy Couture tracksuit.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> Juicy's founders even kept a photo wall of every celebrity who wore their tracksuit. Soon, Juicy Couture was exclusively sold at upscale department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2003, Juicy Couture was purchased by Liz Claiborne, now known as Kate Spade &amp; Company, for $226 million to be paid over a five-year period.</p><p>Juicy was colorful, fun, and covered in logos during a time when people couldn't get enough of showing off the brands they were buying and wearing.</p><p><strong>DiNardo:</strong> It wouldn't be a Juicy product without the Juicy label or insignia or logo of some kind.</p><p><strong>Skaist-Levy:</strong> It makes people happy.</p><p><strong>Nash-Taylor:</strong> Juicy, it is, it's a happy brand. People love it.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> Net sales nearly doubled from 2006 to 2007. By 2008, Juicy Couture had 100 stores generating a total of $605 million in sales. The brand also expanded to include jewelry and a successful fragrance line with Elizabeth Arden. But then the recession hit.</p><p>While most brands struggled following the recession, Juicy Couture's flashy branding particularly stopped resonating with customers.</p><p><strong>DiNardo:</strong> So, during the 2008 recession, fashion was at a point where the "it" bag was really not an "it" thing anymore. It felt a little bit too gregarious, over the top, and proud in the wrong way, so things started to recede; not that people weren't shopping, but they weren't buying things that were so blatant as to what they were and how much they cost.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> The recession inspired a movement towards minimalism, which was pretty much the opposite of what Juicy Couture embodied.</p><p><strong>DiNardo:</strong> Juicy as a label was all about that flashiness and that fun. And so, there was a somberness to fashion, a seriousness, after 2008, and it really wasn't on-brand for Juicy.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> Sales fell 11% year-over-year in 2009. In 2010, founders Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor left the company, citing a loss of ability to help their brand evolve. Sale numbers continued to drop as Juicy failed to keep up with the growing contemporary fashion market. While labels like Alexander Wang and Theory quickly pivoted to add more pieces to their collections, Juicy didn't.</p><p>In 2013, Juicy Couture was officially sold to Authentic Brands Group for $195 million. The company has an eclectic portfolio, including the licensing rights for the estates of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. The group announced plans to close all of Juicy Couture's US stores but said it would reopen five to 10 as it rebuilds the brand. ABG later made a deal with discount retailer Kohl's to sell Juicy-branded products, effectively abandoning the brand's veneer of luxury for many loyal fans.</p><p>Despite its fall from department store to discount bin, Juicy Couture has been angling for a comeback for years. A 2016 collaboration with cult fashion brand Vetements re-sparked interested and lent Juicy some street cred. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kylie-jenner-juicy-couture-2017-1">Kylie Jenner even posted a picture wearing a pricey tracksuit from the collection.</a></p><p>In 2017, Juicy Couture appointed Hollywood stylist Jamie Mizrahi as its new creative director. The brand debuted its new collection with a New York Fashion Week party with OG Juicy Couture lover and living brand embodiment Paris Hilton. Pieces from the collection were available on Juicy's website, as well as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's, with prices ranging from $30 to $400. This marked an upscale pivot for the brand after being sold at Kohl's since 2014.</p><p>In 2018, Juicy Couture released its first-ever runway collection to show pieces from its main contemporary line, Juicy Couture Black Label. It also released two new cosmetic collections, which have been met with varying degrees of excitement. As for whether we'll be seeing Juicy's tracksuit everywhere again:</p><p><strong>DiNardo:</strong> I think they could capitalize on those customers that were in their teens or late teens when the brand was popular. Now those women are moms, and they want something comfortable but pulled together. It's quite possible that the tracksuit could be that item.</p><p><strong>Kim:</strong> Plus, Juicy Couture could fit right into the athleisure market that's continuing to dominate the fashion industry. And with so many other early 2000s fashion trends coming back, who knows?</p><p>2020 could be Juicy Couture's year.</p>
