<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> added over 1,300 active <keyword id="6358815" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech" source="Orion">tech</keyword> startups last year, taking the total tally of active tech startups to 25,000-27,000, a <keyword id="6372077" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nasscom" source="Orion">Nasscom</keyword> report said on Wednesday. India continues to be the third largest <keyword id="1071988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-startup" source="Orion">tech startup</keyword> ecosystem globally (after the US and China). The country also added the second highest number of unicorns in the world, with over 23 added in the CY2022. Simultaneously, the potential pipeline of unicorns expanded to over 170, growing at a pace equivalent to 2021, according to the report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), in collaboration with Zinnov. "Despite the current downturns, opportunities abound for innovative companies that are leveraging emerging technologies to create actionable impact while prioritising business fundamentals over growth," said Debjani Ghosh, President, Nasscom. Despite the headwinds, while total funding in CY2022 dropped 24 per cent over 2021, the annual investments at $18.2 billion were higher than the pre-pandemic levels of $13.1 billion in 2019. The year also witnessed a significant investment focus on non-unicorns and unique startups. Almost 1,400 unique startups received funding in 2022, 18 per cent higher than in 2021. Among these, 47 per cent of startups raised their first round in 2022, the report mentioned. Both early-stage ($5.9 billion in CY2022) and seed-stage ($1.2 billion) investments grew between 25-35 per cent over 2021. In 2022, tech startups in the seed-stage secured 1,018 investments. Late-stage investments bore the brunt with a decline of 41 per cent in deal sizes greater than $100 million, due to considerable correction in the global public markets. "What is remarkable is the ecosystem's maturity, where founders are intentionally prioritising profitability over valuation and the investor trust, despite macroeconomic variables at play. This will pave the way for growth in 2023 and beyond," said Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov. Tech startups are expected to continue increasing innovation and deep-tech adoption, particularly in areas related to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that require complex solutions, the report said.

These are the top Fintech hubs in India — Bangalore, Mumbai leads the race

The world wants a share of the start-up pie in India like never before. And Germany isn’t far behind. While the country has expressed its interest in helping India build smart cities, the country is also keen to contribute in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India project. 
 “Our idea on the Indian start-up ecosystem is very simple. We are organizing <keyword id="2319959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cebit-India">CEBIT India</keyword> 2015 conference in Bangalore in October wherein tech giants, associations and all stakeholders of the IT industry will come together. We will also have 25 start-up participants, who are offering technology based services and products,” said Mehul Shah, managing director, Hannover Milano Fairs India. 
 He added, “These 25 participants will get to exhibit their products or services to over 700 investors which includes private equity investors, venture capitalists among others. Besides, industry bodies such as <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword>, <keyword id="6373028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="COAI">COAI</keyword> and others would also be present.” 
 The shortlisted startups will then get to exhibit their tech solutions at the global CEBIT wherein thousands of investors and tech giants would be there. Last year, CEBIT India had nearly 90 start-ups. This year, the chamber will focus on the digitalization of economy and hence is looking at tech start-ups. The chamber has also partnered with <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword>, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> among others. 
 
It should be noted that apart from venture capitalists, crossover investors such as hedge-funds, mutual funds among others too have been betting big on Indian tech start-ups. Besides, Germany has been India’s largest technology trade partner.

India is also home to the third highest number of unicorns, according to the Nasscom-Zinnov report Indian Tech Start-up Ecosystem – Leading Tech in the 20s. In the first eight months of 2019, India added 7 unicorns, taking their number to 24. Though India is at the third position— it is nowhere close to that of China’s 206 unicorns and US’ 203. But <keyword id="2023759" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-in-India">startups in India</keyword> are also solving its gravest problem — of unemployment. Startups account for 430,000 jobs, and added 60,000 of them in 2019 alone. There are also 50 more startups with the potential to turn unicorns. As many as 35 of them might reach the $1 billion valuation in the next two months as they are a part of soonicorn list. The cumulative valuation of all Indian startups stands at a massive $101 billion. Not just that, India now has about 9,300 tech startups alone, while 1,600 are deep tech startups. It also has 335 incubators and accelerators. "The start-up landscape in the country is becoming the epitome of innovation, with companies bringing out solutions that are aimed at solving locally relevant issues. However, to simulate innovation, government and corporates need to focus on increasing their role as prominent stakeholders playing the part of venture capitalists and providing the appropriate market access, funding, and guidance to seed stage start-ups,” said Debjani Ghosh, President, <keyword id="6372077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword>. The report also adds that India will see 100 unicorns by 2025 and will create over 1.1 million direct jobs.

The $101 billion valuation Indian startup ecosystem made way for 60,000 jobs in 2019

<keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> on Wednesday expanded its programme for startups to support startups working on the solutions to solve real-life challenges towards the new normal post COVID-19 landscape in India. <keyword id="9416148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups">Google for Startups</keyword> has opened applications for the new batch of <keyword id="9416150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups-accelerator">Google for Startups Accelerator</keyword>, with a special focus on health-tech, fin-tech, edu-tech, agri-tech, retail and SaaS startups, the company said in a statement. The next batch will commence in August 2020 and the last date of applications is June 30. This will be the fourth class of startups mentored by Google, which has so far closely mentored over 60 startups in India to date. "We have been working very closely with over 250 Startups founders over the last two months, holding consults with our network of experts, mentors and VCs to help solve for the immediate challenges faced by the founder community," informed Paul Ravindranath G, Programme Manager, Google for <keyword id="9416146" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-accelerator-india">Startups Accelerator India</keyword>. In addition to the fresh call for applications, Google for Startups also announced the launch of 'Emerging stronger: Playbook' for startups to face the Covid-19 Challenge. "We have captured the work of these last two months into a handy playbook which we hope will benefit the larger ecosystem," Ravindranath added. Beyond the Accelerator, Google for Startups will continue to offer support to startups via its partner programme and mentor network.

Google launches program to support Indian startups creating solutions for post COVID-19 world

If you were thinking that tech majors in India are only investing money in start-ups belonging to their industry, you might be in for a shock, since corporates are also sharing their technical expertise and network with start-ups so that they can reach new heights. This is, of course, being done for mutual benefits of both the majors and the start-ups. 
 
While the start-ups get the technical expertise and network, the corporates, in turn, get innovative techniques and new ideas. 
 In recent weeks, a number of tech giants, viz. SAP Labs, Autodesk, Cisco and Amazon Web Services, announced their engagements and associations with <keyword id="770060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-start-ups">Indian start-ups</keyword>. 
 
The global companies operating in the country are looking for start-ups that can align with their business strategy for India, which includes developing new solutions to finding new markets for the existing techniques. 
 
Even though being a part of a full-time corporate programme is no less than a risk for a growth-stage company, the benefits definitely outnumber the concerns about its growth. 
 
"The benefits of association with SAP will work both ways - in terms of educating our customer base the benefits of the SAP gateway solutions as well as using SAP's network of companies to scale the base for Moglix," Rahul Garg, founder of B2B ecommerce start-up Moglix, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/tech-majors-like-sap-labs-autodesk-and-cisco-engage-with-the-vibrant-indian-startup-ecosystem/articleshow/53088972.cms">ET</a>. Indian tech majors are bringing in their expertise to Indian start-ups for mutual benefits

<ul><li><keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> has announced its M12 fund in India. </li><li>M12, which was launched in 2016, is a VC fund from the global tech company. </li><li>In India, Microsoft has been actively engaged with startups with accelerator programs and funding.</li></ul>Tech giant Microsoft has launched M12 its early-stage venture capital fund, in India. The M12 fund was launched globally in 2016 but was initially called Microsoft Ventures. In 2018, the fund was rebranded as M12. It has over 75 companies in its portfolio, globally. "The introduction of M12, Microsoft's venture fund in India will create new value for startups, venture capitals and the company itself to maintain the pace and direction of innovation," Microsoft India president Anant Maheshwari<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/microsoft-underscores-its-commitment-to-the-indian-startup-ecosystem-4131411.html"> said</a>. This fund comprises of experienced VCs and Microsoft veterans who won’t just be putting money in a startup, but will also add value. “The portfolio development team at M12 is specifically built to support and scale companies by leveraging the expansive resources of Microsoft,” the company said. Microsoft has long been involved in the Indian startup ecosystem. The company’s initiative <keyword id="6325416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft-for-Startups">Microsoft for Startups</keyword> has an accelerator program called – Microsoft ScaleUp. The program which is meant for seed stage or Series A funded B2B tech-enabled startups, was launched in February 2018. It helped startups crack over 120 co-sell deals, where they can co-sell with Microsoft sales teams.

Microsoft launches early stage fund to ‘keep pace with Indian innovation’

In this age of <keyword id="428085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="start-ups">start-ups</keyword>, when every start-up is rolling out an app, founders with no technological background can find it difficult to manage everything on their own, so they have to approach developers to build their platform, and chances are that their work would not meet the requirements of the founders, leading either to an unsatisfactory launch or huge prices. 
 
For example, when Vinit Srivastava, the founder of DriversKart, approached a developer in Bengaluru to build the platform, the developer delivered a substandard code because of which Srivastava had to approach another developer in Pune. 
 
"This time we thought we shall give a timeline to the vendor and define at each stage what we wanted. But he kept prolonging the project because he was being paid on an hourly basis," recalls Srivastava. 
 
It was then that he thought of approaching a technology partner, Kaay Labs, which now works with it on a Build-Operate-Transfer model. 
Start-up founders with non-technical founders always find it tricky to build a start-up without knowing how to code. Neither are they able to put across the exact idea to being taken, nor can they be sure of not being taken for a ride by the developers. These are some of the many problems that they face. 
 
This is why studies reveal that having a tech cofounder is a good idea. "The vendor wouldn't make changes at the pace you want them to. Even a CTO who does not own equity might not do it that fast because he has nothing to lose but a job. But if you have a tech cofounder who has some equity, he will do whatever it takes to make sure it excels," suggests Antony Kattukaran, founder of SaaS enterprise start-up Tagalys. 
 
However, he also adds that to hunt for a co-founder with a technological background would not be the right way to do it, while suggesting that it has to happen along the journey.

Bengaluru is the only Indian city to be ranked among the top 30 global startup ecosystems ranked by the report. It jumped two ranks this year in the world’s top 30 startup ecosystems list, according to the report. There are 30 global cities that it said have the potential to become the “next” hubs including Bengaluru. Bengaluru is home to a number of unicorns and is known for its edtech and fintech startups. However, it has been facing several structural bottlenecks. “A weak policy environment in India, as well as relatively low levels of research production, means that <keyword id="6355033" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword> might face more challenges in deep tech startup sub-sectors — those requiring tangible IP — than it did in Software, the report explained. It further said, “Potentially, this might become a significant hindrance in the ecosystem, threatening its future growth,” said the report. The city is also facing challenges due to “quality” of funding. The past growth “Bengaluru, Sydney, Stockholm, and Berlin stand out for their relatively low levels of Funding Quality, driven by lack of local, experienced VCs compared to other ecosystem”, said the report. Edtech and fintech hub India has witnessed exponential growth in co-working spaces over the last year which has fueled expansion in fintech and edutech hubs in India, with about 42% of startups based in Bengaluru. A recent India FinTech Report 2019 by global innovation platform MEDICI says that India is the second biggest Fintech Hub after the US with over 2,000 startups nourishing in the zone. Almost every top ecosystem has a strong national regulatory environment that encourages IP commercialization, according to the report.Here, too, Bangalore, along with Beijing and Shanghai was an exception. “Bangalore has all of the ingredients to create a world class tech ecosystem - investors, engineers, clients, experts - and the potential to build high-quality global startups at a fraction of the cost.” <a href="https://startupgenome.com/reports">said</a> Varun Chawla Founder, 91springboard in the report.

<ul><li>WhatsApp and the Indian government’s Invest India program announced the winners of the ‘Startup India - WhatsApp Grand Challenge’.</li><li>The contest received over 1,700 entries from across the country but only five startups ultimately won. </li><li>Each of the five startups have been awarded a grant of $50,000 each to continue developing their ideas.</li></ul>WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service, collaborated with Indian government’s investment promotion agency, Invest India, to invite startups from all over the country for a contest involving prize money of $250,000. Five startups — Medcords, Melzo, Javis, Gramophone and MinionLabs — outshined the rest winning a grant of $50,000 each. The ‘Startup India – WhatsApp Grand Challenge’ was launched earlier this year to inspire entrepreneurs to develop solutions that have socio-economic impact on the Indian economy. The contest received more than 1,700 entries from all over the country, which were then judged on the basis of innovative thinking, scale of impact and the ability to solve real problems faced by Indians. Around 70% of the applications received were from startups that were less than 3 months old and in prototype stage.
