But to get the most value out of it, organizations should focus on how it interacts with the complementary technologies surrounding it, Dan Crawford, a strategy manager at Cisco, said."It's time to rethink our definition of connectivity," Crawford said. "Rather than viewing it merely through the lens of speed and bandwidth, let's start considering connectivity as a holistic experience."He said companies should focus on enhancing 5G's capabilities with other technologies, such as WiFi, and combine them with hardware and other infrastructure rather than relying solely on 5G to solve every business problem. "This approach makes the network more accessible for innovative applications to shape user experiences," he added.Crawford told Business Insider that this could be complex for some businesses. They often need to decide whether the cost and time needed to upgrade infrastructure and equipment to make it 5G-compatible is worth it.BI spoke with Crawford about these challenges, the types of complementary technologies that can help companies boost connectivity, and how they could unlock 5G's full potential.The following has been edited for length and clarity.What types of complementary technologies should companies focus on to enhance 5G's capabilities?WiFi is the most universal technology. We have computers, laptops, and other devices connected to WiFi, or if you're not relying on WiFi, they use some protocol that's cellularly connected. All these things will need to work together, but the one common factor is their touchpoints to the network.There's an entire ecosystem of devices and tool sets and general employee knowledge that is necessary to be built up to support something that is centered on a single technology like 5G.While the complexity of 5G might seem daunting for companies, especially with the added challenges of existing technologies, we have a responsibility to simplify connectivity for service providers, enterprises, and, ultimately, the end users.We're also trying to remove siloes that have existed. A mobile network has always been siloed from the physical broadband network. There are reasons behind it, but now, how do we integrate them to be sure the experience is seamless and flawless?How does breaking down siloes and focusing on complementary technology benefit businesses?If we can shift our mindset, 5G could very well usher in a new age focused on multiaccess user experiences. There is a likely future where consumers will never need to know whether they are connected to WiFi, 4G, 5G, 6G, or whatever next-generation connectivity technology comes next. If experience expectations are being fulfilled, how users are connected won't matter.The network elements for 5G are designed to distribute roles to empower companies with control, access, and insight. It gives a business the tools to operate similarly to how it is today without feeling like they're handing off the communicative arm of its IT to an entity. If the power goes out or the networks go down, how much will it impact your business? No business wants to forecast that risk in their planning.With 5G, that control can be migrated into the business instead of businesses having to hire experts to understand what mobile networks look like and negotiate the handoffs between a public network and a private network. It simplifies all of that.It's a simplification tool that extends and expands the reach of what a business can do today across the globe.What advice do you have for companies to derive the most value out of 5G?The first thing is understanding your use cases and having a good grasp of your existing technology stack. Looking at the big picture is important for understanding your needs today but also making sure that tomorrow isn't forgotten. It's very important that your ecosystem is front and center in your decision-making process.The goal should be simplifying and expanding what you're already capable of. It's a democratization of connectivity and access.Investing in 5G isn't a one-time thing. It's a long-term decision — an ongoing commitment to innovation, development, and opportunity. It's important that you're not buying technology for technology's sake. Be comfortable not knowing everything and trusting your partners.

Cisco strategy manager says combining 5G with established tech can help companies get ahead

The Mahindra Group company posted a net profit of Rs 493.9 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Revenue rose by 3.49 per cent to Rs 13,313.2 crore in the second quarter of 2024-25 compared to Rs 12,863.9 crore in the same quarter of 2023-24. "Other income includes gain on sale of property of Rs 4,502 million which comprises of freehold land and its related buildings along with the furniture &amp; fixtures sold for a consideration of Rs 5,350 million, receivable over a period of four years along with interest of 8.2 per cent p.a," the company filing said. Sequentially, net profit rose by 46.81 per cent and revenue by 2.36 per cent. "We continue to progress on our strategic improvement efforts even as the overall IT services industry has remained soft. "We have focused on strengthening client relationships and expanding the partner ecosystem while maintaining a sharp focus on operational excellence through project Fortius, which has resulted in an expansion of margins for the third sequential quarter," Tech Mahindra CEO Mohit Joshi said. The CEO unveiled Project Fortius in April, a three-year plan to achieve a 15 per cent operating margin with a focus on organic growth. "This quarter we see consistent performance around increasing deal wins, <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, cost optimisation and steady free cash flow generation as we continue our journey towards FY27 stated targets. In line with our capital allocation policy the board has declared an interim dividend of Rs 15 per share," Tech Mahindra CFO Rohit Anand said. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, global 5G smartphone shipments recorded a 20% growth in the first six months of 2024 amid a decline in 5G smartphone prices. <h2>5G smartphone share crosses 50%</h2>For the first time, the share of 5G smartphones in the overall smartphone shipments crossed 50% in the first half of 2024. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113091114" title="Apple iPhone 16 to launch on September 9 – design, specs and everything we know so far" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “5G handset shipments have been growing steadily and with the increased availability of 5G handsets in the budget segment, the emerging markets have witnessed high growth in this segment,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst, Counterpoint Research. <h2>India emerges as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones</h2>India has emerged as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones behind <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> in the first six months of 2024, overtaking the US. As per the report, strong shipment of 5G devices from Xiaomi, <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Samsung" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and Vivo, among other brands in the budget segment helped fuel the rise of 5G devices in the country. “Other emerging markets also witnessed high growth in 5G handsets. Consumers in emerging markets are looking at 5G handsets as an upgrade to their devices, even in the lower price segments,” Singh added. India recorded the highest growth in 5G smartphone shipments among the top five countries. India’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 60% from H1 2023 to H1 2024. During the same period, China recorded a 14% growth, while the US recorded a mere 2% growth. Out of the total 5G smartphones shipped globally, 32% were shipped to China, followed by 13% each to India and the US. <h2>Apple leads 5G smartphone shipments</h2>With all of Apple’s smartphones being 5G enabled, the Cupertino tech giant leads the 5G race, accounting for over 25% of 5G smartphone shipments. Samsung comes in second with a 21% share. “ As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with increasing 5G penetration in lower price segments as well as increasing expansion of 5G networks, this trend will further grow. The ongoing global premiumization trend will further fuel this growth. The following has been edited for length and clarity.My company, Shared Access, has been working with the Crystal Palace Football Club in London for years to improve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-5g-technology-leaves-connectivity-legacy-in-olympic-host-cities-2024-8">connectivity</a> at its stadium, Selhurst Park.It started when Vodafone approached Shared Access to help build a system for the stadium that ensures great service even when all 30,000 fans are trying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">use their phones at once</a>.Last year, the Crystal Palace team came to us for help supporting a specific cohort of fans: those with visual impairments. In partnership with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givevision.net/">GiveVision</a>, they were working on deploying headsets that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-tech-innovations-behind-paris-olympic-games-connectivity-timeline-2024-8">stream live match footage</a> directly to fans with partial sight, allowing them to sit anywhere in the stadium but see every moment in sync with the pitch action — and they needed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">faster connectivity</a> to make it happen.<h2 id="a62d967b-58dc-4173-a02e-13c9a124d3fe">The existing networks weren't cutting it</h2>Before coming to us, the team working on the project tried running the headsets over WiFi, but there was too much latency. People using the headsets experienced everything on a slight delay, with the fans around them reacting to something on the field before they could see the action.The 4G network that we'd previously deployed with Vodafone, and even public 5G networks, weren't going to do the job. Public networks have a lot of firewalls and protocols that create additional delays, such as the need for data to travel from the stadium to the core network of a mobile operator outside the stadium and then back to the user. It's also difficult because the number of other users using the network inside the venue slows things down.We decided to install a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-wireless-connectivity-changing-airport-experience-aviation-mwc-2024-10">private 5G network</a> with an on-site core in the stadium. This allows for fully enclosed connectivity within the venue, avoiding external data transfer and eliminating the security-protocol challenges of major mobile-network operators. It provides nearly instantaneous performance, with faster speeds than 4G and even purer 5G speeds than most public users experience. Additionally, because the club has total control over who can use the network, it can ensure all the bandwidth goes to these headsets only.On September 21, we officially launched the program, making Crystal Palace FC the first football club in the world to offer a permanent vision-enhancement system at its stadium for fans with sight impairments. Since we've launched, we've seen more fans with visual impairments who previously didn't think coming to a game was worth it show up and have a great experience.<h2 id="aeed7829-1de0-4bc7-8572-0328ee6a1095">Future applications for private 5G networks</h2>While helping these fans see is more than enough justification for implementing this private network, there are also so many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-edge-computing-5g-cloud-artificial-intelligence-2024-3">opportunities</a> for how the tech could be used.For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-market-la-boqueria-5g-ar-personal-shoppers-2023-9">food and beverage vendors</a> could use the private network to power their tills, allowing the stadium to expand its food offerings to areas that previously didn't have strong enough connectivity. Security cameras could be installed in places where it's physically too difficult to get power and fiber wiring. Broadcasters may be able to use private 5G to get footage out more quickly, and without having to deploy as much equipment to the stadium, which would reduce the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-how-5g-tech-could-curb-environmental-impact-2024-7">carbon footprint</a> of their work.It doesn't have to be just sports, either. I'd suggest any kind of venue to consider: What are your problems? What are the things you'd love to do but think you can't because of connectivity?Ultimately, having the foundation of this private network allows so much room for creativity in terms of what you can layer on top of it. Twelve months ago, I'd never heard of GiveVision's headsets, and it had never thought about using a private 5G network, so this collaboration ended up being perfect. Who knows what other applications are out there? I hope other partners and vendors collaborate just as imaginatively to come up with possibilities.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Paris Olympics has one of the world's largest private 5G networks.</li><li>It's the culmination of years of fine-tuning over successive Olympic Games — as this timeline shows.</li></ul>The Olympic Games are perhaps the world's best-known sporting competition, broadcast to billions worldwide.Behind the scenes, intricate internet-connectivity infrastructure broadcasts every twist and turn to those watching from home, while keeping millions in Paris <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">connected</a> with always-on data. 5G is also being used to offer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-paris-olympics-more-accessible-intimate-2023-11">unique perspectives</a>, including from mobile cameras showing how kitesurfers experience their sport."Seamless internet connectivity is no longer a luxury at large-scale events — it's an expectation," Markus Nispel, the chief technology officer at Extreme Networks for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, told Business Insider.This year, the Games are using 5G to pursue more-seamless connectivity for attendees. But it's taken multiple Olympics over six years for the technology to reach new heights.Here's how 5G capabilities have progressed at the Olympic Games since 2018, starting with a small trial at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and expanding to today's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-summer-olympics-2024">Games</a>-wide connectivity experience.<h2 id="47d86205-2395-4901-b982-649d55ca59a0">Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018</h2>For the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, KT, formerly Korea Telecom, ran 5G-network trials to showcase how the technology could be used.The trials included Sync View, a small camera that provided real-time athlete viewpoints, and Hologram Live, which broadcast press conferences live and in hologram form. There was also a 360-degree virtual-reality system that let visitors put on a headset and be immersed in other venues.Another trial feature, Time Slice, allowed viewers at home to watch events from multiple angles. The demonstrations highlighted the potential of 5G for high-speed, low-latency applications in broadcasting and immersive experiences.The trials in Pyeongchang were limited by necessity: 5G was still a nascent technology. Widespread adoption of end-user 5G didn't start until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/chart/9604/5g-subscription-forecast/">a year after the 2018 Games</a>, but organizers saw the opportunity and chose to trial it.<h2 id="7012baa5-1224-4c03-aa1b-446d08caeb95">Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020</h2>The delayed Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 because of the coronavirus, included a slew of 5G innovations.Golf-tournament attendees could rent devices to watch live footage of players who were at different holes from where they were, which provided a new level of access.For the sailing competition, a 50-foot floating screen in the harbor broadcast footage of the event via a drone and 5G technology, bringing a historically hard-to-see sport closer to viewers. At the swimming pool, attendees could use a 5G-enabled augmented-reality app to learn more about the competitors in front of them.All those innovations were made possible by the collaboration between the tech giant Intel and its Japanese partner NTT Docomo. The companies jointly developed the 5G network at what organizers called "the most innovative Olympic Games ever."Indeed, the Tokyo Games saw a significant step forward in 5G adoption because of Japan's advanced tech use. But it would still take time for it to be adopted more widely.<h2 id="5aebc8e4-2aa2-4ac4-81ed-cc52bc14ff84">Beijing Winter Olympics 2022</h2>China has long been an innovator of mobile technology, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing proved no exception.Each Olympic venue had a full 5G network available to use, a first for the global competition. The technology was used at all sporting events, allowing for much deeper integration with TV broadcasting. Mario Reis, the director of telecommunications at the Olympic Broadcasting Services, said at the time that advancement in 5G enabled it to be trusted enough for deployment as a backbone technology for the Games' coverage.Intel once again partnered with a company from the host country, China Unicom, to roll out 5G capabilities. This was a boon given the more-remote nature of the Games, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.The ability for athletes to keep in touch with their families using 5G — which allows for faster, higher-resolution video calls — likely helped ease the challenges of performing at an event where movement and interaction were limited.<h2 id="3feb3546-b3f6-4ab4-b0bc-ac1cde6869bf">Paris Summer Olympics 2024</h2>Unlike previous Games, where organizers have sought to assign network responsibilities across a number of providers, the Paris Olympic organizers hired Orange as the sole provider to oversee 5G."It's a very impressive deployment that we are doing to enhance coverage," Bertrand Rojat, the chief marketing and innovation officer at Orange, told BI.The telecom giant's plans include a massive private 5G network to provide capacity across 32 sports and 120 official sites across the city. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. If Carr does become the chairman of the FCC, the appointment stands to have serious impacts on Big Tech.<h2 id="74fa1360-14f5-4659-b046-4dcdf8b4702e">Carr's stance on Big Tech</h2>In his Project 2025 chapter, Carr writes that one of his four main goals for the FCC is "Reining in Big Tech.""The FCC has an important role to play in addressing the threats to individual liberty posed by corporations that are abusing dominant positions in the market. Nowhere is that clearer than when it comes to Big Tech and its attempts to drive diverse political viewpoints from the digital town square," he wrote."It is hard to imagine another industry in which a greater gap exists between power and accountability," he added.Carr outlined several steps for the FCC to take, including publicizing a new stance on the law's approach to Section 230, a part of the Communications Act of 1934.Section 230 states that online service providers aren't legally treated as publishers of their users' posts and can't be held liable for any actions taken "in good faith" to moderate or censor inappropriate content.Carr said the FCC should push for limitations to those rules, which he said have been abused to give Big Tech corporations immunity on censorship. His interpretation of the section would give Big Tech immunity only against being compelled to take down content.Ultimately, Carr wants to revamp Section 230 as a whole, in favor of a set of antidiscrimination rules that prevent companies from censoring posts, with exceptions for illegal content like child sex abuse images.In place, consumers should be allowed to choose their own fact-checkers and filters, Carr said.He proposed that Big Tech firms be compelled to make public their traffic and monetization algorithms, saying they now operate in a "black box."Carr also wants Big Tech firms to start contributing to the Universal Service Fund, a billion-dollar program run by the FCC that helps underprivileged communities get access to telecommunications services.<h2 id="26cff9fc-99ef-4eaf-859b-12158e20d10d">Carr wants a stronger push away from China — and TikTok</h2>Another of Carr's main points in his Project 2025 chapter is to further decouple the US tech industry from China's.Raising concerns about US national security, Carr called for a ban on TikTok, saying it gives China an opportunity to influence how millions of Americans get their news and information.He also called for the US to expand its Covered List, which tracks foreign tech companies deemed a risk to national security, and to prevent American firms from providing cloud computing services to China.Carr also wants the US to publish a list of FCC-approved organizations with at least 10% ownership from "foreign adversarial governments" like China, Russia, and Iran.To smoothen the push away from China, Carr suggested the US contribute another $3 billion in federal funding to help companies that use Chinese tech find and integrate alternatives.Carr's two other points in his Project 2025 chapter are to increase accountability measures for federal tech programs and to drive hard to develop 5G infrastructure.

She believes 5G holds immense promise for healthcare."One of the greatest opportunities that the widespread adoption of the 5G network brings is opening opportunities for the advancement and accessibility of extended-reality technology in healthcare," she told BI.XR's use in healthcare and medical services, Hoek said, is being delayed everywhere — from the operating room to medical classrooms, from mental health to pain management — because of network limitations. But "with the expansion of 5G technology, the XR healthcare market can expand its reach as the network grows," she said.However, development won't be equal everywhere in the world, she added."With the growth of the 5G network, we can expect to see the XR healthcare market expand," Hoek said. She added that nearly 20 countries around the globe still lacked 4G connectivity but could be brought up to date using 5G. "The expansion of the 5G network would help us reach these countries and would, in terms of healthcare, offer advances in medical training, decrease complications in surgery, and reduce resource costs," she said.<h2>Matt Cranfield, founder of Your Simple Hosting</h2><div type="image" title="Photo of Matt Cranfield, sitting in front of a laptop and two screens" height="900" width="1200" msid="105762459" hostid="261"></div>Cranfield, an IT and tech expert and the founder of the web-hosting company Your Simple Hosting, is beginning to adopt 5G within his business and sees it as the boost his industry needs."5G has been the 'next big thing' already for a couple of years," he told BI. "At Your Simple Hosting, we are trying to make 5G work for us because it's a whole new level of speed that will elevate the processes enormously."He sees a great deal of need for 5G among his clients, especially those who must send and receive data almost instantly.He described one incident that brought the need for 5G into sharp focus: A client had to get their data in sync across several offices around the world and managed to do that with Your Simple Hosting's help, but it would have been much easier with 5G."That experience really hit home about how much we depend on solid, fast connections," he said. "I'm particularly looking forward to incorporating 5G into the mix at Your Simple Hosting. The goal is to improve our services in a way that would astound our consumers."One way he intends to do that is to pair 5G's speedy data-transfer capabilities with cloud data storage to move large files faster than with a traditional connection.<h2>Andy Lindsell, chief technology officer at Babble</h2><div type="image" title="Andy Lindsell headshot" height="900" width="1200" msid="105762460" hostid="261"></div>Lindsell heads up the tech team at the cloud-solutions provider Babble, which advises Britain's small and midsize businesses on using 5G to compete with larger companies.He's seen how 5G can revolutionize the customer-engagement experience."In the retail sector, where every second counts, 5G's real-time processing of mass datasets enables retailers to delve into footfall analytics and make data-driven decisions to enhance the in-store experience," he said.5G could underpin advanced video analytics and artificial-intelligence algorithms analyzing customer-movement patterns to help optimize store layouts. The tech could even help stores develop personalized promotions based on customers' individual preferences, Lindsell said.The chief technology officer also foresees doing similar work for real-estate and travel agents, both of whom could offer immersive virtual-reality experiences around homes and tourist destinations using 5G-powered headsets.<h2>Parm Sandhu, vice president of enterprise 5G products and services at NTT Ltd.</h2><div type="image" title="Parm Sandhu headshot" height="900" width="1200" msid="105762461" hostid="261"></div>Sandhu, the vice president of enterprise 5G products and services at NTT Ltd., a network-connectivity provider, sees huge growth potential in manufacturing, transport logistics, and healthcare with 5G."5G, and specifically private 5G, is acting as a catalyst that is driving customers toward change," he said. "It's not like we haven't had cellular or wireless-communications technologies in the past, but today we're seeing that 5G has caused a perfect-storm event, where customers who have been struggling with their Industry 4.0 digital-transformation projects, often due to lack of adequate communications technology, are now suddenly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel."What were previously stalled digital transformations have been energized by the reliable connectivity inherent in private 5G connections. For instance, Schneider Electric has turned its factory in Lexington, Kentucky, into the US's first smart factory, using 5G provided by NTT. "Currently, the site showcases IoT connectivity, edge analytics, and predictive analytics to drive sustainability and energy efficiency on a private 5G network," Sandhu said.Alongside Schneider Electric, NTT has customers including Frankfurt Airport (Europe's largest private 5G network) and the city of Las Vegas (the largest private 5G network in the US) signing up to develop private 5G and edge-computing capabilities."NTT is not looking at private 5G in isolation but rather as part of a complete edge strategy," he said.
