Ted Cruz entered Monday evening like many Texans, hopeful that TCU Horned Frogs could pull off a stunning upset of the Georgia Bulldogs, the defending national champions, in the College Football Playoff National Title Game.</p><p>"Getting pumped for the game tonight! #frogsby90," <a href="https://twitter.com/tedcruz/status/1612490635453292544?s=20&amp;t=EVi8dJp_J3TI4Pn017EHxw">Cruz wrote on Twitter before the game.</a> After this story was published, Dave Vasquez, Cruz's press secretary, <a href="https://twitter.com/DaveVasquezFL/status/1612851193868337152" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> that #frogsby90 is a reference to a meme, not an actual preditiction. </p><p>Georgia won the game in a historically dominating fashion. In sports parlance, Cruz's take turned out to be almost as cold as Texas when the senator briefly left for Cancun in February 2021.</p><p>Georgia, who finished the season 15-0, is the first team to go back-to-back since SEC foe Alabama did it in 2011 and 2012, though the Bulldogs are the first to do it in the College Football Playoff era. Meanwhile, Georgia looked shaky after coming back to beat Ohio State in the Peach Bowl by a single point. </p><p>It hasn't been all bad for Cruz. The former Republican presidential candidate watched his Houston Astros win the World Series this past fall. The senator even went to New York to watch the ALCS, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-mocked-yankees-game-heckled-on-the-view-2022-10">where he was ruthlessly mocked by a handful of Yankee fans.</a></p><p>Georgia enters next year with another chance at history: becoming the first team of the polling era to win three straight national titles. If head coach Kirby Smart pulls off the feat, he'll have achieved a distinction that bedeviled the likes of legendary coaches such as Paul "Bear" Bryant, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Tom Osborne, Jimmy Johnson, Bob Devaney, and Bud Wilkinson. After halftime pep talks that almost certainly featured calls for a renewed emphasis on ball security, TCU quarterback Grayson Muehlstein threw his fourth interception of the night on the first drive of the second half.</p><p>At that point in the contest, with Cal leading 7-0, the teams had accumulated as many combined interceptions as they had combined points.</p><p><span>Two of Muehlstein's interceptions came on illegal plays, but that technicality was the least of the Horned Frogs' worries.</span></p><p>TCU finally scored late in the third quarter thanks to a drive with no passes that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run.</p><p>The Horned Frogs tried to follow that up by bringing in a fresh arm for their next possession. But he clearly forgot that quarterbacks are allowed to move their feet.</p><p>So back came <span>Muehlstein, and after the<em>&#xa0;</em>Golden Bears threw their fourth interception of the night, the 6-foot-4, 211-pound senior found himself in a position to clinch the victory for TCU.</span></p><p><span>But like nearly every other instance in this game, the offense could not convert.</span></p><p><span> Muehlstein and the Horned Frogs got the ball back with 2:08 remaining in the contest and promptly worked their way up the field, relying exclusively on running back Sewo Olonilua for every possession. With 50 seconds left, a 15-yard Muehlstein pass put TCU in field goal range and gave the quarterback his longest completion of the night.</span></p><p>With time winding down, the Horned Frogs called a timeout to prepare for a 44-yard game-winning field goal attempt, but California iced kicker Cole Bunce and allowed TCU head coach Gary Patterson to confuse everyone in the general vicinity by switching out his kicker twice. Eventually, Bunce launched a shot wide of the upright and sent the calamitous affair into overtime.</p><p>The Golden Bears threw an interception on their first possession of overtime, because of course they did. But <span>Jawuan Johnson's 84-yard return was called back thanks to the Horned Frog's sports information director tripping over a first down marker and tumbling onto the field.</span></p><p>Still, TCU miraculously managed to work the ball into field-goal range without committing a turnover. For each of those seven teams besides the Blue Devils, the upset came at the hands of an unranked program.</p><p>As a result, three of those teams - the Clemson Tigers, TCU Horned Frogs, and LSU Tigers - fell out of the rankings entirely, allowing the Villanova Wildcats to reclaim a spot in the top 25 after undergoing their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/villanova-drops-out-of-top-25-rankings-trouble-for-big-east-2018-11">first exit from the rankings since 2013</a>&#xa0;last week. The Texas Longhorns, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Maryland Terrapins all made their first appearances in the top 25 this season, while each of the other four ranked teams that suffered upsets throughout the week fell by at least one spot in the poll.</p><p>Even with the significant shake-up, the very top of the AP Poll continues to remain steady. Sure, the then-No.3 Gonzaga Bulldogs upset then-No. 1 Duke in a thriller at the Maui Invitational. And yes, the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks needed a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dedric-lawson-dominates-overtime-in-kansas-win-over-no-5-tennessee-2018-11">sensational overtime performance</a> from <span>AP preseason All-America team selection&#xa0;Dedric Lawson to take down the then-No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers. Still, all three of last week's top teams remain in the top three spots for the third consecutive week. The Bulldogs leap-frogged both the Blue Devils and the Jayhawks for the top spot, with Kansas coming in at No. 2 and Duke rounding out the podium.</span></p><p><span><br>The fourth, fifth, and sixth spots in the poll also remain virtually untouched. The Virginia Cavaliers moved up one spot from No. 5 in Week 2 and have sat just outside of the top three ever since. Tennessee fell one place to No. 6 after losing to the Jayhawks, and the Nevada Wolf Pack slotted in at No. 5. Those three teams have filled those slots, in some variation, since Week 2.</br></span></p><p><span>This level of consistency at the top may give fans a glimpse of which teams will earn No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. Last season, Kansas found itself in one of the top four spots in the AP Top 25 Poll for each of the first five rankings of the season en route to one of the No. 1 seeds. Meanwhile, Villanova - which went on to earn a top seed before <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/villanova-wins-national-championship-in-dominating-fashion-and-with-a-wink-2018-4">winning the national championship</a> - followed closely behind with rankings between No. 4 and No. 6 for that same span.</span></p><p><span>That being said, with conference play on the horizon and a long three months before March, everything is subject to change.
