<ul><li>The Indian government approved <keyword id="16054" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dot" source="Orion">DoT</keyword>’s 5G spectrum auction during a cabinet meeting held on June 14.</li><li>Reportedly, an auction of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with 20 yrs validity by July-end will be put to auction.</li><li>India is going to get 5G connectivity soon.</li></ul>The Union Cabinet has approved the auction of airwaves capable of offering fifth-generation or 5G telecom services including ultra high-speed internet, and gave its nod for setting up of captive 5G networks by the big tech firms. The auction of over 72 GHz of the spectrum will be held by July-end, said an official statement detailing the decision taken by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>, at its meeting held on June 14. The spectrum auction will commence on July 26, 2022. Sources told PTI that the Cabinet has approved 5G auctions at reserve prices recommended by the sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). TRAI had earlier recommended about a 39 per cent reduction in the reserve or floor price for the sale of 5G spectrum for mobile services. While the 5G spectrum in nine frequency bands will be auctioned to telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, the Notice Inviting Applications -- bid-related document issued by DoT -- said big tech firms for the time being will be allowed to take the 5G spectrum for their captive non-public network, on lease from the telecom companies. The Notice Inviting Offer said direct allocation to the big tech companies will follow a demand study and sector regulator TRAI's recommendation on aspects such as pricing and modalities of such allocation. Big tech companies like Google have been seeking direct allocation of spectrum for applications such as machine-to-machine communications, IoT and AI, while telecom companies have been opposing direct allocation of 5G spectrum to them saying it will distort the level playing field and rob the government of revenues. "Enterprises setting up Captive Non-Public Network may obtain the spectrum on lease from TSPs (telecom service providers) having Access Service Authorization and establish their own isolated network. Required Licensing terms and conditions and Spectrum Leasing guidelines shall be issued by DoT," the Notice Inviting Applications said. As per the document, the government from time to time will publish required provisions and guidelines and licensing terms and conditions for enabling the setting up of Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN). According to the document, the auction is slated to start on July 26, 2022. Among other key dates to watch-out for is the pre-bid conference scheduled for June 20, 2022, submission of applications with a deadline of July 8, and pre-qualification of bidders on July 18. Mock auctions will be held on July 22 and 23, 2022. A total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a validity period of 20 years will be put to auction to be held by the end of July, 2022. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications to conduct spectrum auction through which spectrum will be assigned to the successful bidders for providing 5G services to public and enterprises," the official release said. The auction will be held for spectrum in various Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz) and High (26 GHz) frequency bands. Overall, the payment terms have been eased for bidders in the upcoming auction. Continuing the pace of telecom sector reforms, the Cabinet announced various progressive options with regard to the spectrum auction, for facilitating ease of doing business. "For the first time ever, there is no mandatory requirement to make upfront payment by the successful bidders. Payments for spectrum can be made in 20 equal annual instalments to be paid in advance at the beginning of each year," it said, adding this is expected to significantly ease cash flow requirements and lower the cost of doing business in this sector. The bidders would be given an option to surrender the spectrum after 10 years with no future liabilities with respect to balance instalments. No SUC (spectrum usage charges) will be charged for spectrum acquired in this auction. "The availability of sufficient backhaul spectrum is also necessary to enable the roll-out of 5G services. To meet the backhaul demand, the Cabinet has decided to provisionally allot 2 carriers of 250 MHz each in E-band to the Telecom Service Providers," the official statement said. The Cabinet also decided to double the number of traditional Microwave backhaul carriers in the existing frequency bands of 13, 15, 18 and 21 GHz bands, the release informed. The India market is gearing up 5G services, that will usher in ultra high speeds and spawn new-age services and business models, and the mega-auctions will pave the way for roll out of next generation services by telcos, in 2022-23. Internet usage increased by 10% According to a report by the Bank of America Securities, there has been a 10% increase in internet usage. And, they have complied. “Given the crisis, we've developed a way to reduce Netflix's traffic on telecom networks by 25 percent while also maintaining the quality of our service,” Netflix’s VP (Content Delivery) Ken Florance said, according to a PTI report. Asus launches new ZenBook and VivoBook laptops with OLED displays, AMD processors and more

Mumbai, Jan 17 () Market benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended on a mixed note after a volatile session on Friday, with gains in Reliance Industries offsetting losses in other heavyweights HDFC, ICICI Bank and TCS.
 After hitting a record intra-day high of 42,063.93, the 30-share BSE Sensex settled 12.81 points, or 0.03 per cent, higher at 41,945.37.
 The broader NSE Nifty, however, ended 3.15 points, or 0.03 per cent, down at 12,352.35.
 On the Sensex chart, Bharti Airtel was the top gainer, rallying 5.47 per cent, after experts said the Supreme Court's rejection of a review of its order that put Rs 1.47 lakh crore liability of past dues on telcos, will weaken Vodafone Idea's ability to compete in the Indian market; in turn, providing an opportunity for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to gain market share.
 Shares of Vodafone Idea plunged 25.21 per cent.
 Ahead of their quarterly earnings, Reliance Industries and HCL Tech advanced up to 2.79 per cent, while TCS fell 0.79 per cent.
 Heavyweight HDFC dropped 1.23 per cent.
 In percentage terms, IndusInd Bank, SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank and L&amp;T were among the top losers.
 On the contrary, Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech and Maruti Suzuki emerged as major gainers. 
 According to traders, domestic investors are awaiting directional cues from key corporate results for cues amid concerns over higher bank non-performing assets and a spike in retail inflation.
 Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended higher. European markets also started on a positive note.
 Brent crude oil futures rose 0.36 per cent to USD 64.86 per barrel.

New Delhi, May 10 () IT company Tech Mahindra expects 5G rollout, demand for home connectivity and digitisation will drive business growth in the coming days, senior officials of the company said.The company expects short term setbacks for businesses due to coronavirus pandemic, however, telecom clients will support the business growth. "There will be some headwinds, and those headwinds will be common to everybody, but company continues to innovate, continues to leverage every of my acquisition and certain businesses where the expansion is likely to happen faster, for example, digital, for example, healthcare, we are doing a double click or a double drilling," Tech Mahindra MD and CEO CP Gurnani said in an investors call.According to the details uploaded on the company's website, 93 per cent employees in the company's IT team and around 85 per cent in the business process services were working from home after the lockdown was announced.Tech Mahindra CEO for Network Services Manish Vyas said that major service providers continue to remain focused on investment in network expansion and 5G services."The new workspace is clearly shifting more towards the home and that is something telcos, particularly the large ones who have been incumbents, they are all going to be looking at that product mix and all looking at digitisation and strengthening the product mix with home as the new access of growth," Vyas said.He said that a lot of discussions are going on telecom players towards digitisation of homes.During the lockdown, most of the employees across businesses are working from home.IT major TCS has already announced plans to allow 75 per cent of employees to work from home by 2025.Tech Mahindra in the quarter ended March 31, 2020 reported 29 per cent dip in the March quarter consolidated net profit at Rs 803.9 crore owing to narrowing of margins due to factors including a surge in COVID-19 related costs.For the 2019-20 financial year, the Mahindra group company reported 6.15 per cent decline in net profit at Rs 4,033 crore. In December quarter, the profit stood at Rs 1,145.9 crore.Gurnani said that the company continued to book businesses in March and teams both in the US and India were very active and they booked some good businesses."We are confident that the company is in a war mode, our teams are warriors and we will fight and we will fight back," he said. Mumbai, Jan 17 () Market gauges Sensex and Nifty gave up early gains to close on a flat note on Friday as investors moved to the sidelines amid concerns that the Supreme Court ruling on telecom AGR issue might further aggravate stressed assets problem in the banking sector.
 At the closing bell, the BSE benchmark Sensex was up 12.81 points or 0.03 per cent at 41,945.37. The index also marked its new all-time high of 42,063.93 in intraday trading, before surrendering some of its gains.
 The broader Nifty, however, settled 3.15 points or 0.025 per cent lower at 12,352.35. The NSE barometer too touched its life-time intraday peak of 12,385.45 in early deals before losing momentum.
 During the week, the Sensex advanced 345.65 points or 0.83 per cent; while the Nifty rose 95.55 points or 0.77 per cent.
 In a session marked by high volatility, gains in Reliance Industries offset losses in other heavyweights HDFC, ICICI Bank and TCS.
 On the Sensex chart, Bharti Airtel was the top gainer, rallying 5.47 per cent, after experts said the Supreme Court's rejection of a review of its order that put Rs 1.47 lakh crore liability of past dues on telcos, will weaken Vodafone Idea's ability to compete in the Indian market; in turn, providing an opportunity for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to gain market share.
 Shares of Vodafone Idea plunged 25.21 per cent.
 Ahead of their quarterly earnings, Reliance Industries and HCL Tech advanced up to 2.79 per cent, while TCS fell 0.79 per cent.
 Heavyweight HDFC dropped 1.23 per cent.
 In percentage terms, IndusInd Bank, SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank and L&amp;T were among the top losers.
 On the contrary, Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech and Maruti Suzuki emerged as major gainers.
 Sectorally, BSE bankex, metal, finance, capital goods and IT indices fell up to 0.78 per cent. While energy, telecom, healthcare, consumer durables, power and auto indices rose up to 1.79 per cent.
 In the broader market, BSE midcap and smallcap indices rose up to 0.54 per cent.
 "As anticipated mid and small caps are outpacing the broader market... Main indices are impacted by Supreme Court verdict on AGR, having an effect on telecom and banking sectors which are already facing NPA problem. The pre-budget rally has been very solid on a month-on-month basis, market may consolidate in the short-term and take cues from the actual budget and on-going results," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
 The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed review petitions filed by telecom companies against its October 24, 2019 order that asked for inclusion of non-telecom revenues for calculating statutory dues such as licence fee and spectrum usage charge.
 Dues, which total to Rs 1.47 lakh crore for 15 telecom companies including Airtel and Vodafone Idea, as per the October order, have to be paid by January 23.
 According to traders, domestic investors are awaiting directional cues from key corporate results for cues amid concerns over higher bank non-performing assets and a spike in retail inflation.
 Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended higher. European markets also started on a positive note.
 Brent crude oil futures rose 0.36 per cent to USD 64.86 per barrel.
 The Indian rupee depreciated 15 paise to 71.08 per US dollar.
 "Global markets witnessed a strong rally as easing trade tensions and promising economic data buoyed the sentiments. Indian markets too ended the week with strong gains especially in midcaps and small caps. Midcap and small caps have significantly outperformed the Nifty... According to the BSE filing, Bharti Infratel will be a majority shareholder in the merged entity with a likely stake of 68.6%, whereas the London-listed Vodafone Group will hold around 28.2% of the stake. Escorts gains over 5% The shares of Escorts Motors gained nearly 5% on the back of blockbuster August sales data. The company has registered a whopping 80% growth in August tractor sales compared to the same period last year. The company further said it remains optimistic about further sales during the festive season. BEML and Tata Power gains ground BEML shares were up 4%, whereas Tata Power gained 2% after the company closed ₹2,580 crore deal with the Indian Defence Ministry for the procurement of Pinaka rocket launchers for six Army regiments. Biocon gains 5% Biocon shares gained nearly 5% after its subsidiary along with Mylan NV, launched an insulin glargine injection Semglee in the US market. The company said ‘Semglee’ has received final approval from the US FDA and has an identical amino acid sequence to Sanofi’s Lantus, a drug that is used to control high blood sugar. Future Retail tumbles 9% Future Retail shares tumbled 9% after the Government Pension Fund Global, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds sold 95 lakh shares at ₹158.61 per share. The Government Pension Fund Global fund held 2.28% stake in the Future Retail at the end of June. L&amp;T gained 2% L&amp;T shares gained nearly 2% during the early trading hours after the company closed the long-awaited strategic divestment of L&amp;T Electrical and Automation business to Schneider Electric for ₹14,000 crore. The L&amp;T deal was announced in May 2018 and took over 2 years to be completed after receiving the requisite regulatory approvals. But both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have more to fear than just Jio Fibre. The Aramco energy Jio's mobile phone services has about 340 million subscribers as of now. Ambani is targeting to take this number to over 500 million over the next few months. That would mean Jio will remain an aggressive player in the market and that's bad news for other players like Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Given that RIL is getting additional cash from Aramco and BP, and if it becomes a zero net debt company by March 2021, the company of its size and scale will only have more money to muscle out other players with its aggressive pricing.
