The <keyword id="21180338" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-filing-season" source="keywords">tax filing season</keyword> is knocking at our doors, and you have until July 31 to answer it without paying any penalties. But are you confused as to where to start? Does the stack of documents needed to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITR" source="keywords">ITR</keyword> seem too long? Well, we’ve got you covered. But first off, why do you even need to file an ITR? Simply put, if your <keyword id="21120362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-income" source="keywords">annual income</keyword> is more than Rs 2.5 lakh (if you opt for the old tax regime) or Rs 3 lakh (if you opt for the new tax regime), you are liable to pay taxes and, hence, file an ITR. If you delay filing your ITR, or file it between August 1 and December 31st, you'll have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. If your annual income is below Rs 5 lakh, then you'll be fined Rs 1,000 for late filing. But in certain cases, you will also have to file an ITR for the financial year, even if your annual taxable income is below the exemption limit : <ul><li>Deposited more than Rs 50 lakh in a savings bank account</li><li>Spent more than Rs 2 lakh on foreign travel</li><li>Incurred expenses of more than Rs 1 lakh in electricity bills</li><li>If your TDS/TCS deducted is more than Rs 25,000 </li></ul>If you’re a <keyword id="22247326" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salaried-employee" source="keywords">salaried employee</keyword>, here’s a handy list of documents you should collect beforehand before you sit down to file your taxes so that you don't have to scramble for them at the last minute. Firstly, there are your regular documents like PAN and Aadhar card. Also, keep all details of the bank account where you want your IT refund to be credited handy. It is advisable to also have your Annual Income Statement (AIS) ready, so that you can cross-verify and match all your income details while filing your ITR. AIS as a consolidated financial summary of your year <h2>Time to get in <keyword id="22247325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Form-16" source="keywords">form-16</keyword></h2>Up next is Form-16. This gives you a complete overview of your total earned salary and the TDS deducted. This is issued by the employer to their employee. So, if you have switched jobs during the year, or worked with one or more organizations, you'll have to ask both your current and former employer for Form-16. Additionally, along with Form-16, you should also ask your previous employer to give you a statement of full and final settlement. Generally, form-16 has two parts-A and B. While part-A carries details of the employer and a summary of salary payments made during the year, part-B is where you will find your salary breakup, and the deductions made from your salary, which include payment of life and health insurance premiums, contributions made to pension fund and more.<h2>Keep rent, travel proofs handy while filing ITR </h2>In case you are claiming tax deductions under HRA (house rent agreement), you will need a notarized rent agreement as proof of rent payment. Generally, rent agreements are made for a period of 11 months. Next, in case you have availed LTA (leave travel allowance), you should have all travel-related bills handy. You can claim tax exemption on LTA in two ways. One, you can claim exemption on the amount you've actually spent on your travel. Otherwise, within a 4-year time block (2022-2025), you can claim exemption for a maximum of 2 vacations. This is applicable only for domestic travel, and you can claim exemption for your immediate family members as well. But remember, LTA will not cover your accommodation or food-related expenses incurred on the trip. Up next are your investment proofs and capital gains statement. If you've paid premiums for a life or health insurance policy during the year, or invested in ELSS (equity-linked savings scheme), you need to furnish proofs for the same. You can claim an annual <keyword id="20265008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-deduction" source="keywords">tax deduction</keyword> of up to Rs 25,000 on premiums paid towards your health insurance policy. In fact, your insurance company will send you a certificate to that effect as well. As for ELSS, you can claim an annual tax deduction of up to Rs 1,50,000. But you cannot withdraw money from ELSS before 3 years, so invest carefully. <h2> Pay attention to capital gains while filing ITR</h2>If you've redeemed, or sold some of your investments (property, stocks, mutual funds) during the year and earned profit on them, you'll have to pay <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword>. But this is applicable only if your capital gains are over Rs 1,00,000 in one financial year. If you sold a share/mutual fund unit within 12 months of buying it, you'll have to pay a 15% short term capital gains tax. And if you redeemed an investment after 12 months, you'll be charged 10% long term capital gains tax. That is why it would help to have a capital gains statement handy, which will help you understand how much tax you have to pay.

Profit margins of IT companies must be under pressure for January-March quarter due to record hiring and salary hikes

Former <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> CEO Rajesh <keyword id="221979" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gopinathan" source="Orion">Gopinathan</keyword>'s overall remuneration jumped 13.17 per cent to Rs 29.16 crore in FY23, his last year as the chief executive of the largest IT services player. In the annual report for the fiscal year 2022-23, TCS said Gopinathan earned over Rs 25 crore as commission, a salary of Rs 1.73 crore and Rs 2.43 crore in other benefits. Gopinathan, who helmed the company for six years till May 31, had earned a salary Rs 25.76 crore FY22. Despite heading the largest company, Gopinathan's pay cheque is lower compared to peers and also lower than what his predecessor <keyword id="97017" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="n-chandrasekaran" source="Orion">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> drew in FY17 before being appointed as the Tata Sons Chairman. On his elevation to the CEO's seat from being a chief financial officer, Gopinathan drew Rs 6.22 crore in FY17 which doubled to Rs 12.5 crore in FY18 and had been steadily rising since but for a blip in FY20. Gopinathan has committed to help TCS in the leadership transition by being available till September, and is yet to reveal his future plans. K <keyword id="16817833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krithivasan" source="Orion">Krithivasan</keyword>, Gopinathan's successor, will be getting a basic salary of Rs 10 lakh per month which can go up to Rs 16 lakh, commission as decided by the board and other benefits like rent-free residential accommodation. The company's chief operating officer N G Subramaniam earned a total remuneration of Rs 23.60 crore for FY23, up from about Rs 20 crore in FY22. The annual report said the increase in managerial remuneration is at 13.58 per cent as against the median hike of 5.11 per cent across its 6.14 lakh permanent employees. Chandrasekaran thanked Gopinathan and also wished the best for Krithivasan in his note, and said TCS is significantly investing in building AI capabilities which include products and platforms that are AI-powered. "We will also invest in research areas important for the future, in collaboration with our global academic partners and start-up ecosystem," he added. Krithivasan, who has been with TCS for several decades, said he has interacted with customers, leadership teams and employees as part of the leadership transition and added that an order book of USD 34.1 billion, coupled with strong pipeline of replenishment, gives it a good visibility for the medium-term. Chandrasekaran also said that companies need to focus on building talent for the future as the energy, supply chain and AI (artificial intelligence) transitions are going to require companies to reskill or upskill existing talent base, hire and integrate new talent and invest in research. In his note to shareholders, Gopinathan spoke about overcoming the challenges on the HR front, and said TCS' best years are ahead. "We broke out of the vicious cycle of hiring and counter-hiring within the industry by investing in onboarding an unprecedented number of fresh engineers," he said, pointing out that it hired 1.10 lakh fresh engineers in FY22 and 44,000 in FY23. Its global head for human resources, Milind Lakkad, said half of its over 6 lakh workforce has been hired since March 2020 and underscored the need for staff to return to working from offices. "New employees get acculturated through physical interactions with senior colleagues and leaders, by observing and following their behaviors and ways of thinking. Without those interactions, employee engagement as well as acculturation got badly impacted," Lakkad said. Amid the talk of newer technologies like generative AI, Lakkad said the "linearity" between revenue and headcount is not going to go away any time soon. "With ever-increasing dependence on technology for competitive differentiation, we expect enterprise spending to keep growing, for which we will have to keep hiring new talent," he said. TCS completes its fresher hiring target three months ahead of schedule but it’s not done yet

Infosys’s EBIT (or earning before interest and taxes) margin declined to 20.1%, the lowest in the last two years. The decline was due to multiple factors, including wage hikes, lower utilization and higher sub-contracting expenses, some of which will continue to impact the company in the ongoing September quarter as well. Brokerage firm ICICI Securities is of the view that the increase in travel costs, wage hikes for senior employees in Q2FY23 and supply-side cost pressures will weigh on Infosys margin. Nomura believes that the impact of wage hikes may be limited, while improvement of utilization and effects of price increases in contracts are likely to be gradual. Margin recovery likely an uphill task for Infosys after Q1 shock

ever buyout by the Bengaluru-based company. The shares of Wipro have led the IT pack ever since the new chief executive officer (CEO) Thierry Delaporte took charge in June last year. The company made about $2 billion last year from IT services and if Capco delivers the same amount of revenue as it did last year, it could add another $700 million to Wipro’s topline. That’s a 35% bump up a year straight away. Expectations are built up in the stock that has gained about 30% since the Capco deal was announced in early March, and closed in April. <div type="image" title="Wirpo stock price chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84201479" hostid="261"></div> There is also a lot of apprehension. “The execution risk is further aggravated by a weak growth performance from Capco over the last two years – even after adjusting for the drag due to COVID-19,” said Motilal Oswal in its report dated March 4. “We’re guiding revenue growth of 2% to 4% in the first quarter, outside of Capco and Ampion,” Delaporte had said during the earnings call in April. Wipro has acquired Ampion, an Australia-based provider of cyber security, devops and quality engineering services. The move will strengthen its commitment towards clients and stakeholders in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). The acquisition will close in the quarter ending June 30, 2021. TCS, Infosys and HCL Tech will show a good quarter but Wipro’s earnings will outshine them all ⁠— here’s why

<ul><li>NASSCOM and Bank of America are at odds about the job cuts set to occur across the Indian IT industry in the ongoing fiscal year.</li><li>Bank of America asserts that up to three million people could find themselves unemployed as a result of automation while NASSCOM asserts that only 1.4 million are employed in the ‘low skill’ segment to begin with.</li><li>Companies in the Indian IT sector may continue to be ‘net hirers’ in FY22, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be losing their jobs to software programs that can perform day-to-day tasks better than humans. </li></ul>India’s leading information technology (IT) lobby, NASSCOM, and analysts at Bank of America are sparring over how many employees in the sector are set to lose their jobs this year. Whether it's half a million or three million, ‘low skilled’ <keyword id="57650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-jobs">IT jobs</keyword> are under threat of automation — and even the executives recognise this. Bank of America has estimated that Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>), <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, <keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword>, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant and others will see a 30% reduction in ‘low-skilled’ jobs globally by 2022 because of robot process automation (RPA). The global financial services company gauged that around 9 million people are employed in such roles in India, which means 3 million — one third of the total — will find themselves unemployed by the end of the year. NASSCOM has hit back saying that only 1.5 million people are employed in low-skilled and BPO roles, not 9 million. Which means, even if there are to be job losses, at the same rate as Bank of America is predicting, they may only amount to around half a million. However, according to NASSCOM, existing business process outsourcing (BPO) employees won’t be impacted by automation because most of the work that is being done now involves “higher end expertise”. That is to say, that ‘low skilled’ jobs have already been ‘filtered out’ — employees were either fired or upskilled — over the last few years. But one of its members, Tech Mahindra, disagrees. Whether it's half a million or three million — 'low skilled' IT jobs in India are definitely at risk

Currently, one-third of India's population reside in cities and it is estimated to go up to 50 per cent by 2030. There is a steady rise in the number of households with a shift towards nuclear families and increased urbanisation. The 66 per cent young population - below 35 years of age, are emerging as young millennial borrowers of home-loans. It is also true that home-loans market is driven by young borrowers within the age group of 26-35 years - about 25 per cent and also by people in the age group of 36-45 years - about 28 per cent. These are all active home-loan audience and jointly account for 53 per cent of annual originations. The average ticket size of a home-loan of young borrowers has continued to increase over the last 5 years, with a CAGR of 6.2 per cent. The ticket size continues to increase more for women than men. The cumulative active home-loan base of these borrowers has seen continuous growth over the last 3 years at a CAGR of 3.5 per cent. These young borrowers have been the reason for change in the home-loan market. Within the affordable segment, volume growth in home-loans of Rs 15-35 lakh, over the last 4-5 years, indicate shifting preferences of buyers towards higher ticket sizes. Rural Housing demand for mid-range and higher ticket sizes has continued to increase over the last 5 years too. Share of annual originations (volume) of Rs 35-75 lakh ticket size has increased by 4 per cent in the last 5 years. Share of annual originations of Rs 75 lakh plus ticket size has increased from 0.37 per cent to 0.87 per cent in the last 5 years. Share of annual originations of Rs 15 lakh ticket size has declined over the last 5 years, largely due to falling demand for very small ticket size segment of Rs 2 lakh. The dearth of disposable income has been a deterrent factor for salaried class towards taking home-loan and buying real-estate. Since the input cost in real-estate has increased the rates, the salaried class is left with no other option but to approach for home-loans from financial institutions. Interestingly, the tenure of repayment of home-loan is fluctuating between 11-30 years. There is also a deterrent factor for salaried class in home-loans and EMIs. The EMIs are no more supportive since the financial institutions first draw larger part of interest in the EMIs and principal component is kept less in more than first 50 per cent of the EMIs. As the EMIs near completion, the interest component becomes negligible and principal component is much higher. Even if the buyer has the provision of pre-payment of home-loan, he ends up paying the larger portion of principal amount rather than saving on the interest. Further, the financial institutions also levy heavy fees on pre-closure of loans. In case the buyer opts for higher tenure for loan repayment, it then makes it difficult for the buyer to invest in second property. One question that has been asked frequently is - "If the principal and interest amount are predefined, why the EMIs can't have equal amount throughout the tenure." Coming to tax benefit, repayment of principal amount in a home-loan qualifies for deduction under section 80C, which has an upper limit of Rs 1.50 lakh per annum. Since the same section - 80C, accounts a number of other investments including PF, PPF and life insurance policies etc, it becomes impossible for a buyer to take advantage of any benefit out of this section. Buyers are looking forward to increase in this limit in Union Budget-2022 since this limit has not been increased in last many years. On the tax benefit for interest payment, since under section 20(b) of the Income Tax Act, there is a cap of Rs 2 lakh per annum on the interest part of the home-loan, home-loans being larger in size, the buyers are unable to take much benefit of the same too. To extend tax benefit to the buyers the government has also added few sub-sections 80EE, 80EEA under the Income Tax Act but the volume of loan is not allowing buyers to gain desired additional benefits out of these sub-sections. What perhaps needed in the Union <keyword id="10547300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Budget-2022" source="Orion">Budget 2022</keyword> is to bring dynamic changes in the income-tax slabs and increase the rebates under section 80C, 80EE, 80EEA and 24(b) of the Income Tax Act.  Meanwhile, the EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) margins for the top four IT companies have fallen by 350 bps to 21.7% over the last 5 years until the end of September 2019, according to a recent Ambit report. This is despite a 16% fall in the value of rupee, which should ideally boost the margin because these firms make most of their revenue in dollars. The pain is far from over and the margin could fall another 120 basis points by the end of financial year ending March 2022, according to Ambit. The pain for TCS is getting worse Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is likely to end 2019 on a sombre note. The software exporter owned by the Tata Group is likely to clock a revenue growth of less than 1% in constant currency terms between October to December 2019 quarter compared to three months ago, according to Centrum, a Mumbai-based broking house. Banking and retail verticals have decelerated further, the management told analysts at Centrum. The two verticals account for nearly 46% of the technology major's revenue. The slowdown could affect the full-year earnings too— Centrum expects the growth for financial year ending March 2020 to 8.5% before accounting for exchange rate changes. This would be sharply slower than the 11.4% the company clocked in the previous financial year. Infosys may be relatively better off The expected slowdown for TCS is coming at a time when Infosys is looking to reclaim the coveted pole position among India's IT stocks. The company has reportedly stepped up efforts to bag more deals, and bigger ones, with a special focus on government contracts in the Asia-Pacific region. Further, analysts at HDFC Securities recently said that Infosys could make $100 million to $150 million just from cost-saving initiatives. However, these are just efforts for which results are yet to be seen. In the mean time, as business gets tighter for the technology majors, they are looking to reduce cost by hiring more freshers. They are trying to bring costs down by hiring more people straight out of engineering colleges, and reducing the strength higher up in the corporate hierarchy. In the first 6 months of the year, the five tech companies named above hired over 64,000 freshers. TCS alone picked up 26,500 employees, and a large part of it has been at the bottom of the pyramid. Indian techies looking to change jobs in 2020 — business is getting tighter for the likes of Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech and their peers
