<ul><li><keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share. </li><li>Its dollar revenues fell marginally by 0.2%, but net profits went up by 2.3% sequentially. </li><li>Its attrition for the quarter stood at 14.9%. </li></ul> Tech major TCS disappointed the street as it reported a 0.2% sequential fall in second quarter dollar revenues on Wednesday, which suggests demand uncertainty continues to plague IT companies. The company announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share. Its dollar revenues fell marginally by 0.2% to $7,210 million from $7,226 million in the first quarter of FY24. Analysts expected the company to post anywhere between 0.5-1% growth in revenues in constant currency terms. Its net profit, however, went up 2.3% sequentially to ₹11,380 crore from ₹11,120 crore from the first quarter. The company’s orderbook stands at $11.2 billion with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.6. “Strong deal momentum delivered us a very large order book in Q2 – our second highest TCV ever in a quarter, and a good pipeline. The resilience of demand for our services, our clients’ willingness to commit to long tenure programs and their continued appetite for experimentation with Gen AI and other new technologies give us confidence in our longer-term growth prospects,” said K Krithivasan, CEO and MD of TCS. The company also reported an operating margin at 24.3% for the quarter – which expanded 0.3% YoY. “Our focus on improving employee utilization, while driving productivity improvement and cost efficiency across the organisation, has helped us expand our operating margin to 24.3%,” said Samir Seksaria, CFO of TCS. The company announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share. The stock closed at ₹3,610 on Wednesday. It also announced an interim dividend of ₹9 per share. Commenting on this, Prashanth Tapse of Mehta Equities Ltd. said, "TCS board approved buyback of ₹17,000 crore at a price of ₹4,150 per equity share against street expectations of ₹4,300 to ₹4,500 per share. The buyback price is at a premium of about 15%. TCS revenue falls QoQ for the first time in 4 years; announces ₹17,000 crore buyback

Even in times when demand is slow, discretionary spends are elusive, the new-age technology is bringing work as well as excitement into the IT outsourcing market. Although the size of the deals is small at the moment, genAI has ‘captured the imagination’ of clients, say top executives of Indian IT companies. TCS and HCL Tech said that most of their <keyword id="19151325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai-projects" source="Orion">genAI projects</keyword> are proof-of-concept or pilot stages. “Deal sizes are small and are mostly under $1 million where clients are trying them out. But there is potential to convert a part of our Jaguar Land Rover with AI and ML capabilities,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of TCS at the company’s Q2 earnings press conference. HCL Tech’s MD C Vijayakumar too shared that most of the genAI deals they are bagging are either half a million or sub-$1 million deals. But they are currently working on a hundred such opportunities. “We have been selected as a partner by this very large software major for their product testing and sustenance efforts. We are providing GenAI on a private language model to improve resolution rate and speed efficiency,” said Vijayakumar. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh also shared that they are working on some proprietary large language models (LLMs). “AI is a part of almost every deal we do. And, GenAI is getting there. As it expands and more and larger enterprises get into it, it will be very exciting,” he added. A catalog of AI opportunities A few months back, all tech majors announced big moves in the generative AI space. Wipro announced that it will spend as much as $1 billion over three years to build capabilities. TCS, HCL Tech partnered with software major NVIDIA to skill their employees. As of September end, TCS said that they have 100,000-strong GenAI-ready workforce. They said they also have as many as 250 Gen AI opportunities in the pipeline. “When we started generative AI, they were all about knowledge discovery. As clients understand more, the genAI is getting more complicated. We are now working for a co-pilot for a financial advisor on what advice to give clients, help underwriting policies,” explaining K Krithivasan, CEO of TCS. TCS said that it has identified opportunities across various verticals, identified use cases and cataloged them per vertical. With that it says that it’s planning to go and engage with clients and have conversations on the same. “With this, we can have conversations with our clients – be in CRM or payments space and wealth advisory and other use cases,” explained Ganapathy. HCL Tech too is working on use cases related to banking and financial sector. “We signed a generative AI deal with a to improve their risk and compliance efforts – which is a very big effort in financial services. There are a lot of transactions happening on this front, and we have discussed how we can help,” said Vijayakumar. The buzz for cost optimization and automation deals has gone up in the last few months. Clients are looking to ramp down their expenses and intend to use tech to help with their overall cost reduction efforts. As automation gains ground, AI and ML will find more use cases – and most tech companies are confident that a little of it can spill into the new and emerging area of GenAI as well.

Beyond just chats: Indian tech majors start bagging deals in GenAI space

<ul><li>Tech brands have fared badly in 2023 due to global headwinds, recession threats and more.</li><li>Banking and financial services companies including fintechs saw their value swell during the year.</li><li>PhonePe and Cred were the new entrants into Kantar’s list of Top 75 Indian brands.</li><li>Auto companies made a comeback from Covid-lows with TVS and Mahindra being among the fastest risers. </li></ul>It is not just the share prices of technology services companies that are falling, even their brand value has taken a beating. India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. Having been around for more than half a century, the company has rebranded itself to showcase its bold aspirations for the future. From ‘experience certainty’ — coined in 2005 — the IT services behemoth’s tagline now reads, ‘building on belief’. It took 10 months, talking to 100 clients, and coordinating with 460,000 employees to bring the brand’s new image to life. Even until the last minute, TCS was course-correcting to make sure they got the messaging ‘just right’, according to Rajashree R, the company’s chief marketing officer (CMO. “We went through a lot of iterations, a lot of feedback — sometimes we were tweaking, sometimes we were making large level changes. They already have more than 460,000 employees across the globe with many more waiting in line to join TCS’ growth story. “Our employees are our biggest brand ambassadors,” said Rajashree. She explained that they are the people who communicate directly with customers, which is why it’s very important that they understand the brand better than any promo, ad campaign or social post can put across. Even when discussing TCS’ new look, the company made it clear that it wanted to get millennials to come and share their opinion considering that the organisation’s average age is between 26 to 27 years old. “This was not like a boardroom activity. We had youngsters who came and shared their views about TCS and what they felt about the organisation and what they wanted to talk about,” Rajashree told Business Insider. And the main aim behind that was to make sure that it was an all-inclusive process. It’s not a rebranding — it’s an evolution Despite the timing of it all, the decision to rebrand TCS was not something that was triggered by the pandemic but already in the works before COVID-19 reached the borders of India. “Even before the pandemic struck, we wanted to refresh our positioning because we felt we wanted to have a branding messaging platform that is a reflection of who we are as an organisation today, which is very different from what we were a decade ago,” said Rajashree. TCS wants to be clear about the fact that it’s not moving away from its promise of offering clients certainty but that it’s evolving to showcase how the brand goes hand-in-hand with its clients to work towards a shared purpose. Simply put, TCS is still offering what it always did — just a little more now, because it can. Moreover, technology is at the centre of it. Across the industry, the pandemic has been a lesson in how company transformations going forward are going to be centred on technology. For a company like TCS, it’s an opportunity to shine. “We're not becoming somebody else. We're just finding the right messaging statement to position TCS much more strongly,” said Rajashree, clarifying the thought process behind the company’s new tagline is growth. The aim is to “provide wings” to TCS’ many business teams and help them position the brand better. TCS has its fingers in almost every pie, from aviation to financial services to retail. This means that there are many stories to be told. “Even as a CMO, there are stories that I have not heard, there are stories that I don’t know,” Rajashree remarked candidly. The <keyword id="13658159" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nascent-information-technology-employees-senate" source="Orion">Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate</keyword> (NITES) union is seeking to remove the non-compete clause, which states that the employees cannot work for the competitor companies for six months after leaving the company. The clause also forbids the employees to join the workforce of the clients they had worked for in the last 12 months before quitting, according to the letter to minister <keyword id="1850634" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bhupender-yadav" source="Orion">Bhupender Yadav</keyword>. The clause includes these companies in their competitor list — Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), IBM, Cognizant, and Wipro. “For the period of six months after leaving Infosys, employees will not — accept any offer of employment from any customer, (with whom I worked) in the twelve months immediately preceding my termination or accept any offer of employment from a Named Competitor of Infosys, if my employment with such Named Competitor would involve me having to work with a Customer with whom I had worked in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the termination of my employment with Infosys,” the clause says according to the letter. The letter was written by the NITES union president, Harpreet Saluja, to the minister stating that the clause violates Section 27 of the Contract Act. “They are likely to affect the employee’s means of procuring a livelihood for himself and his family. Meanwhile, its revenue declined 0.3% on year to $4.8 billion during the quarter. The company follows a January to December accounting year. Adding to the woes, Cognizant says full year guidance of 2023 is expected to be $19.2 - $19.6 billion, which would mean a decline of 1.2%. The next quarter revenue is expected to be at $4.83 - $4.88 billion, showing a decline of 0.6% to 1.6%, or a decline of 1.0% to flat in constant currency. Cognizant reported an operating margin of 14.6% for March quarter, which is lower than Indian IT giants TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra. For the full year 2023, the company has guided for adjusted operating margin to be in the range of 14.2%-14.7%. Following the peer IT major’s mixed bag of earnings which expects a decline in 2023 revenues, shares of most Indian IT companies were trading lower. It attributed the move to its NextGen program through which it expects to simplify its operating model and optimise corporate functions. “In the second quarter of 2023, we initiated the NextGen program aimed at simplifying our operating model, optimizing corporate functions and consolidating and realigning office space to reflect the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. Our drive for simplification will include operating with fewer layers in an effort to enhance agility and enable faster decision making,” the company said in a statement. Cognizant has a total headcount of 3.51 lakh in the March quarter, which is a decrease of 3,800 from the previous quarter. Its voluntary attrition rate declined to 23% in Q1 FY23 from 30% in Q1 FY22. "Our accelerated bookings growth in the quarter, which included several large deals and a healthy mix of new and expansion work, reflects the strengths of our services, our brand, and the longstanding relationships we have with our clients. I am also encouraged by the continuing reduction in our voluntary attrition," said Ravi Kumar S, CEO at Cognizant. “Having spent more than three months assessing the business, meeting with over a hundred clients and thousands of employees, I firmly believe Cognizant has a strong foundation for accelerating growth," said Kumar S in a statement.
