<ul><li>The Maze <keyword id="6465154" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ransomware-attack">ransomware attack</keyword> on <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword> workers will have an impact on its revenue and operations in the coming year, according to the company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US.</li><li>The attack has put <keyword id="6357549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-IT-companies">Indian IT companies</keyword> like Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on alert to continuously monitor their own systems.</li><li>According to Infosys’ chief operating officer, the ransomware attack had nothing to do with working from home. The same attack could have just as easily occurred even if employees were working from an office.</li><li>Other ways to exploit the systems, like phishing and malware, are a greater risk to a network when working from home.</li></ul>The Fortune 500 company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/cognizant-hit-by-maze-ransomware-service-disrupted-for-some-clients/articleshow/75234787.cms">Cognizant</a> was the victim of a ransomware attack last week on Friday, April 17. This has put Indian IT companies like Infosys on high alert. Even though cybercriminals seem to have become more active during the coronavirus lockdown, working from home isn’t the primary issue. It’s about ensuring that networks have advanced threat protection and that they’re continuously monitored for breaches. “We have looked at our own networks and found out that our networks are secure. We’ve invested in advanced protection software which has been deployed at all the endpoints and across the networks,” said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-earnings-q4-2020-revenue-dividend-profit-and-margins/articleshow/75252356.cms">Pravin Rao</a>, the chief operating officer of Infosys, during the fourth-quarter earnings call on April 20. Tata Consultancy Services (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/tcs-ceo-says-the-business-model-is-20-years-old-and-its-time-to-go-employee-lite/articleshow/75243124.cms">TCS</a>) has shifted from the concept of offshore development centres (ODCs) to secure borderless workspaces (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/tcs-ceo-says-the-business-model-is-20-years-old-and-its-time-to-go-employee-lite/articleshow/75243124.cms">SBWS</a>). It is also looking into solutions that can help its employees work from home without compromising on security. However, that was already in the works even before news of the Cognizant ransomware broke. "We rejigged our cyber security posture, and all our project management practices and systems to ensure that proper work allocation, work monitoring and reporting continued, so that the high quality and delivery certainty that our customers have come to expect from us was never compromised," TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinathan explained during the company's earnings call on April 16. The ransomware may hit Cognizant’s revenue, according to company filings made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (<a href="https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&amp;CIK=0001446811&amp;owner=exclude&amp;count=40&amp;hidefilings=0">SEC</a>). Not only did the attack have an immediate impact, but continues to cause disruption in parts of its business processes. The Maze ransomware has been around for less than a year, but its damage to businesses and government has only escalated. Ransomware attacks don’t have anything to do with working from home Those behind Maze are known to target IT support companies in the past as well. In October last year, it tried to infiltrate a management service provider (MSP) in Italy by impersonating the Italian Revenue Agency via email, according to a report by Proofpoint. Experts believe this may have been an attempt to gain backdoor access to the MSPs, so that the ransomware could be pushed out to their clients. With the coronavirus pandemic, more employees than ever are working from home. Across the board — for Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro and TCS — more than 90% of their employees are working from home. However, working from home isn’t what is making the networks weaker. The same could have just as easily occurred even when employees were working from offices, according to Rao. “Whatever has happened with this ransomware threat, it has nothing to do with work from home. If I look at the vulnerability, it could have happened anywhere irrespective of work from home because it exploited a particular version of a product,” Rao said. IT giants are beefing up their own security Ransomware is persistent enough to attack anywhere but that doesn’t mean that there’s a greater risk to a network when working from home. “Work from home may have a higher impact, less from a security perspective, but more from phishing attacks than data leaks. Security breaches can happen even when you’re working from the office,” said Rao. Last week, between April 13 and April 19, hackers attacked businesses over 22 million times, according to data compiled with Atlas VPN. There were at least 2 million attacks on average per day. During the last 30 days, cybercriminals have tried to infiltrate corporate networks nearly 100 million times. Wipro was already a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/wipro-phishing-attack-computer-system-hacked/articleshow/68918449.cms">victim of one such phishing attack</a> in April last year when employee accounts were used to gain access to customer information. “Successful ongoing cyber resilience will require the strategic alignment of cyber strategies with incident response, business continuity and disaster recovery planning. We’ve got to involve the entire enterprise — from the front office to back,” said Akhilesh Tuteja, co-leader of global <keyword id="6361948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity">cybersecurity</keyword> at KPMG International. Going forward, businesses will need to invest more in cybersecurity, both on having the right tools as well as the right manpower in place. Business-driven risk scenarios are currently lacking, according to a KPMG report on key cybersecurity considerations for 2020. Companies’ operating model needs to be in line with cybersecurity. Not only is that important for IT service companies to keep their networks and revenues secure but also maintain trust with their clients. Cognizant's ransomware attack is making peers like TCS and Infosys nervous — and they are beefing up security

<ul><li>Buying new laptops isn’t necessarily the answer to better cybersecurity if you don’t have the right mitigation methods in place. </li><li>Siddharth Vishwanath, the partner and leader of cybersecurity at PwC India, says setting up <keyword id="1427497" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="virtual-machines">virtual machines</keyword> may be a more cost-effective and secure way for companies to fend off <keyword id="116273" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyberattacks">cyberattacks</keyword>. </li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Vishwanath explains how enterprises — big and small — can set themselves up to protect against <keyword id="11094" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hackers">hackers</keyword>. </li></ul>The coronavirus pandemic and the new work-from-home model has every enterprise thinking about cybersecurity — from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to the big wigs like TCS, Wipro and Infosys. While it may seem like MSMEs are a great risk due to the lack of specialised IT security, large enterprises have a more complex and ever-expanding boundary to cover. Instead of buying 200 <keyword id="2393075" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-laptop">new laptop</keyword>s or providing security solutions for 200 of employee’s laptops, Vishwanath believes it would be more sensible and cost-effective to provision virtual machines (VMs) in the cloud. “These can be charged per hour and only be billed for the 8-10 hours an employee may use per day, whereas a new laptop would require dedicated support SLA and entire device lifecycle commitment,” he explained. Where do hackers break-in? Hackers are continuously revamping and building up how they can break into networks and devices, no matter how full-proof security may be. As the cliche goes — the best offence, in this case, is a good defence. Just a more narrow approach, that can focus on the most likely targets, “By concentrating on what I would term chokepoints,” said Vishwanath. <div type="image" title="uniquebruteforceattempts_edited" msid="76274880" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The remote work infrastructure is being heavily targeted, along with attempts of identity theft and malicious payload delivery.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> This means covering the basics like the firewall or proxy and Virtual Private Networks (<keyword id="752657" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="VPNs">VPNs</keyword>) for employees. Even if a phishing scam is successful, 2-factor authentication can make it difficult for an attacker to enter a protected network. “By ensuring every employee connecting to corporate resources (on-premises or in the cloud) must go through a two-factor authentication we are reducing the attack surface caused by weak passwords or a phished employee,” he explained. <div type="image" title="EDRdetection_edited" msid="76274919" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The increase in EDR systems may or may not be directly attributed to the cyberattacks during the COVID-19 crisis, but it could have resulted from decreased patch compliance, increased number of people working remotely and use of unsafe devices connected to corporate networks through the provision of home VPNs in certain cases.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> For employees, that does mean that their company is likely to monitor their traffic to check for malicious connections or emerging attacks vectors — like any new COVID-19 scams. Just as employees need to adapt to the ‘new normal’, organisations also need to keep their options open. “Backup alone is never an answer,” said Vishwanath. While essential, it’s best to also have next-gen antivirus, network layer scanning and endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions in place to provide a ‘defence in depth’ for a higher degree of protection. Don’t buy new laptops, invest in virtual machines to protect against cyberattacks — suggests cybersecurity expert

If I’m losing 20 people, I have to hire 20 people. To that extent, lateral hiring will come down,” HCL Tech CHRO Apparao VV told Business Insider. Part of it will be based on form booking and a part of it will be based on anticipation — past number. With attrition at an all-time low of 8.9%, India’s biggest IT firm TCS too has been focused on onboarding freshers since July. “We started onboarding freshers and increased our recruitment globally in Q2 in anticipation of the growth trajectory,” said TCS CHRO, Milind Lakkad, during the second-quarter earnings call. The company is looking to onboard 10,000 employees over the next year in the US amid the uncertainty around H-1B visa regulations. Over the last five years, TCS has hired around 21,500 employees in the country in its efforts to localise. Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Hiring freshers, rather than laterally, allows companies to pick up talent that’s relatively cheaper. It’s also easier to train fresh minds in-house for specific skills, especially because they are in short supply in the market. Exploitation in the name of the coronavirus Last month, Microsoft also warned its users to beware of another coronavirus themed malware distribution campaign claiming to be from Johns Hopkins University. Emails were being sent out with booby-trapped spreadsheets with headlines like ‘horrible charts’. Under the guise of being from the Reserve Bank of India or a nationalised bank, attackers were sending out emails that looked innocent enough, referring to COVID-19 guidelines or a financial transaction with a .zip attachment. The attachment included a JAR-based malware that would allow bad actors to take your device from a remote location. How to protect yourself from phishing scams In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, more people working from home — and hackers are more active than ever preying on unsecured networks. “Cybercriminals are exploiting the coronavirus outbreak to send fake emails with dangerous links to employees,” said Norton, a cybersecurity company. As risk escalates, it’s important to maintain a healthy suspicion for emails from email IDs you haven’t seen before, especially if its with respect to any coronavirus news. “Even if they promise news you are interested in, any information in the attachment will almost certainly be available from a more direct source, via a link of your own choosing,” said Paul Ducklin the principal research scientist at Sophos. As a precautionary measure, one should have a malware detection tool or anti-virus installed to alert them in case something slips through the crack. At the minimum, all devices should be fully updated with the latest security patches. SBI warns 2 million users may be at risk of phishing attacks in Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities

IT major Infosys has instrumented a new plan to beat Trump's propaganda, according to news agency PTI. Infosys has been in favour of a healthy mix of local and global personnel even though hiring locals in overseas markets often pushes up operational costs for IT outsourcing companies. With the US mulling over various measures to make visa norms stricter under the <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> administration, Indian IT firms have been contemplating tweaking their business models and accommodating more locals. "We are closely monitoring the overall situation with respect to visa... in the last 24 months, we have focused on increasing our presence in the US with a lot more local hiring," Infosys Chief Operating Officer U B Pravin Rao told investors on a recent conference call. He added that at this stage, Infosys has not seen any "undue things" that will impact the way it does business. "In this year, we will continue that focus. We will accelerate it. We will also start looking at developments and training centres in the US as well," he said. Rao, however, did not talk about the investments Infosys will make on the expansion. The North American markaccounted for over 60 per cent of Infosys' USD 10.2 billion revenue in the 2016-17 fiscal. During his election campaign, US President Trump had promised stricter immigration laws and protection of local jobs. Besides, a legislation (Lofgren Bill) in the US was introduced that proposed doubling of the minimum wages of H-1B visa holders to USD 130,000. Most recently, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had come out with a policy memorandum that potentially makes it difficult for Indian technology professionals to work in the US at entry-level positions. Any change in visa norms can affect the movement of labour as well as spike operational costs for the IT players. Indian firms like <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>, Infosys and <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> that are dependent on visas are now focusing on bringing on board more locals to comply with the norms. Once considered an industry bellwether, Infosys has had its share of challenges over the past few years. Apart from competition from rivals like TCS and <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword>, it is also facing a public spat between founders and the Board over allegations of corporate governance lapses. Under CEO Vishal Sikka, the company has been trying to turn things around. The former <keyword id="6358384" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAP">SAP</keyword> executive has set up an ambitious target for Infosys reaching USD 20 billion revenue by 2020 with a strong focus on new technologies like automation and artificial intelligence. While Sikka himself has admitted that the goal is "aspirational", the company has continued to invest in start-ups working on these new-generation technologies. "...our FY17 revenues from new software and software- related services including Mana, Panaya, Skava and Edge grew at more than 42 per cent," Sikka said. As a result, the malware may gain elevated permission on the system. “Due to the high privilege level of security products, an error in them could help malware to sustain its foothold and cause more damage to the organization,” said the report. The good news is that most of the bugs that were found can easily be eliminated. Those affected were alerted to the problem by the team of cybersecurity researchers. Malware infiltrates the defenses of common antivirus softwares like McAfee, Kaspersky, Symantec and others

New Delhi, May 7 () Facebook-funded education technology firm Unacademy's data comprising over 20 million accounts has been hacked by cybercriminals and put up for sale in the dark web, according to cybersecurity firm Cyble. The hackers have claimed that they have access to the complete database of Unacademy and decided to leak only users' accounts at this point of time, Cyble said. The cyber intelligence firm added that further leaks are expected in the near future. "On May 3, 2020, Cyble Inc discovered that a threat actor had begun to sell an Unacademy user database containing 20 million accounts for USD 2,000. Unacademy is India's largest online learning platform. This data breach apparently took place in January 2020," Cyble claimed. When contacted, Unacademy co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Hemesh Singh said the company has been closely monitoring the situation and claimed that no sensitive information such as financial data or location has been breached. "As per our internal investigations, e-mail data of around 11 million users has been compromised as against 22 million stated in reports. This is on account of only around 11 million e-mail data of users available on the Unacademy platform," Singh said. He said the company is following stringent encryption methods and making it highly implausible for anyone to decrypt passwords. "We also follow an OTP-based login system that provides an additional layer of security to our users. We are doing a complete background check and will be addressing any potential security loophole to further bolster our efforts of ensuring a far more robust security mechanism. We are in communication with our users to keep them updated on the progress," Singh said. Facebook, General Atlantic, Sequoia India, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, and Nexus Venture Partners have invested in the company. According to Cyble, this breach can have an impact on security of other companies as well. "Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for such breaches and utilise them for credential stuffing attacks. The ruling has wide-reaching implications for <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> security research and copyright law, reports The Washington Post. The judge ruled that "Corellium's creation of virtual <keyword id="57315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhones">iPhones</keyword> was not a copyright violation, in part because it was designed to help improve the security for all iPhone users". "Corellium wasn't creating a competing product for consumers. Rather, it was a research tool for a comparatively small number of customers," the report quoted the judge as saying on Tuesday. Corellium's software makes it unnecessary to use physical iPhones that contain specialised software to poke and prod iOS, Apple's mobile operating system. "We are very pleased with the Court's ruling on fair use and are proud of the strength and resolve that our clients at Corellium have displayed in this important battle," said the law firm Hecht Partners that represented Corellium. Apple did not immediately comment on the judgment. In the lawsuit, Apple argued that Corellium's products could be dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands because security flaws discovered by Corellium could be used to hack iPhones. Apple loses copyright battle against Corellium

With an over 39 per cent rise in <keyword id="6362094" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ransomware">ransomware</keyword> attacks in the past three months, India ranked second only to the US among the countries most impacted by the threats, said a study by cybersecurity firm Check Point on Tuesday. The research revealed a 50 per cent jump in the daily average of ransomware attacks in the last three months globally, compared to the first half of 2020. Ransomware attacks in the US doubled - about a 98 per cent increase -- in the last three months. Sri Lanka, Russia and Turkey were ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively among the top five countries most impacted by ransomeware attacks during the study period. The percentage of healthcare organisations impacted by ransomware globally nearly doubled, making it the most attacked sector in the US, said the report. "Ransomware is breaking records in 2020. Ransomware trends began with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, as organisations scrambled to enact remote workforces, leaving significant gaps in their IT systems," Lotem Finkelsteen, Check Point's Head of Threat Intelligence, said in a statement. "However, the last three months alone have shown alarming surges of ransomware attacks." Some of the primary drivers of the rise include more sophisticated attacks, such as Double Extortion, and people's willingness to pay. In a Double Extortion attack, hackers first extract large quantities of sensitive information, prior to encrypting a victim's databases. Afterwards, attackers will threaten to publish that information unless ransom demands are paid, placing substantial pressure on organisations to meet hackers. Finkelsteen said that hackers deliberately choose a ransom price that targets are more willing to pay. For the study, security researchers at Check Point leveraged their threat intelligence engine, Threat Cloud, and calculated a number of insights and observations around the latest global ransomware trends. Threat Cloud is derived from hundreds of millions of sensors worldwide that are supplemented with Artificial Intelligence-based engines and research data from Check Point Research. India becomes the second-most targeted country for ransomware after surge in attacks over the last three months

The UAE-based small arms manufacturer <keyword id="1291912" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="caracal">Caracal</keyword> on Monday stated they are committed to the '<keyword id="6354869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>' initiative to fast-track the supply of 93,895 <keyword id="9974832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="car-816-assault-rifles">CAR 816 assault rifles</keyword>. The company was selected by the Indian Ministry of Defence in 2018 to supply assault rifles to <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>. Caracal stated that they have already identified the required land, facility and local partners to be able to commence production immediately. UAE-based weapons maker promises nearly one lakh CAR 816 assault rifles for the Indian Army through 'Make in India'

The feature is now available to users of Axis and SBI Card, with Kotak and more banks expected to follow suit very soon. With tokenisation, Google Pay <keyword id="6355645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Android">Android</keyword> users can use their debit or credit card to make payments through a secure digital token attached to their phone without having to physically share their credit or debit card details. "We are hopeful that the tokenisation feature will further encourage users to transact securely and safely in the current times, and expand merchant transactions both online and offline," said Sajith Sivanandan, Business Head: Google Pay and NBU-India. The feature also works with online merchants, delivering more native and seamless OTP experiences without any redirects to 3D Secure sites. With tokenisation, Google Pay will enable NFC-capable Android devices to make contactless payments at over 2.5 million Visa merchant locations. It will allow users to scan and pay at more than 1.5 million Bharat QR enabled merchants and the customers can pay bills and recharges from within their Google Pay app using their card. "Visa recently crossed over 1 billion token credentials globally and with Google Pay live in India, we expect these numbers to rise significantly. We are excited to partner with Google to further accelerate digital payment innovations in times to come for the Indian market and beyond," said TR Ramachandran, Group Country Manager, Visa, India &amp; South Asia. To enable the tap and pay feature using the smartphone phone, users will have to do a one-time set up by entering their card details and follow it by entering the OTP they get from the bank to add their card to the Google Pay app. After the registration, the feature can be used to make payments at NFC-enabled terminals, the company said. "From the initial purpose of finding and connecting with friends and families, social media has evolved and will continue to evolve in unprecedented ways," said Dipesh Kaura, General Manager for South Asia, Kaspersky. "It has played a key role on how we socialise and identify with each other, but now, we have arrived at a fork in the road where virtual profiles of both individuals and companies are being used as a parameter for judgment," Kaura said in a statement. Almost three in 10 users in Asia Pacific (APAC) admitted to having a social media profile without their real identities. The consumers in the APAC region are increasingly becoming aware of the reputation they are building online and its importance to their real lives. "On this basis, it is not surprising that 49% of the respondents will check the social media accounts of a brand or a company before purchasing their goods or services," the report stated. "The consumers now hold companies accountable for their online reputation, in the same way that individuals' behaviour on social media is now being used to determine one's credit score, to screen one's employability, and even to either reject or approve one's Visa request," Kaura elaborated. My hope is that as people heard our story and as they continue to hear our story that it will become as apparent to them as it is to us that we have no monopoly.
