<ul><li><strong><keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Its dollar revenues fell marginally by 0.2%, but net profits went up by 2.3% sequentially.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Its attrition for the quarter stood at 14.9%. <br /></strong></li></ul><br />Tech major TCS disappointed the street as it reported a 0.2% sequential fall in second quarter dollar revenues on Wednesday, which suggests demand uncertainty continues to plague IT companies. The company announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share.<br /><br />Its dollar revenues fell marginally by 0.2% to $7,210 million from $7,226 million in the first quarter of FY24. Analysts expected the company to post anywhere between 0.5-1% growth in revenues in constant currency terms.<br /><br />Its net profit, however, went up 2.3% sequentially to ₹11,380 crore from ₹11,120 crore from the first quarter. The company’s orderbook stands at $11.2 billion with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.6.<br /><br />“Strong deal momentum delivered us a very large order book in Q2 – our second highest TCV ever in a quarter, and a good pipeline. The resilience of demand for our services, our clients’ willingness to commit to long tenure programs and their continued appetite for experimentation with Gen AI and other new technologies give us confidence in our longer-term growth prospects,” said K Krithivasan, CEO and MD of TCS. <br /><br />The company also reported an operating margin at 24.3% for the quarter – which expanded 0.3% YoY.<br /><br />“Our focus on improving employee utilization, while driving productivity improvement and cost efficiency across the organisation, has helped us expand our operating margin to 24.3%,” said Samir Seksaria, CFO of TCS.<br /><br />The company announced a ₹17,000 crore buyback at a share price of ₹4,150 per share. The stock closed at ₹3,610 on Wednesday. It also announced an interim dividend of ₹9 per share.<br /><br />Commenting on this,  Prashanth Tapse of Mehta Equities Ltd. said, "TCS board approved buyback of ₹17,000 crore at a price of ₹4,150 per equity share against street expectations of ₹4,300 to ₹4,500 per share. The buyback price is at a premium of about 15%. TCS shareholders cheer share buyback and strong growth

It will offer a price of up to ₹4,500 a share. That’s a premium of nearly 17% to the closing price on Wednesday (January 12).<br /><div type="image" title="TCS share" height="900" width="1200" msid="88859723" hostid="261"></div>TCS revealed its share buyback plan along with reporting a 4.5% growth in revenue in constant currency terms. This is comparable to Infosys (7%) and Wipro (3%) in the same period. <br /><br />Since companies like Wipro, TCS, and Infosys export software, and earn in dollars, pounds or euros, they report growth in constant currency terms, which is adjusted for foreign exchange fluctuations. <br /><div type="image" title="TCS dollar" height="900" width="1200" msid="88859729" hostid="261"></div>TCS added 10 new clients whose annual revenue potential is $100 million or more in a year for the company. “Quote on deals”<br /><br />“Overall we don’t have a specific preference of small deal, medium deal or large deal. We participate across the board and stay continuously engaged across the full spectrum. Very large deals like $500 million or billion dollar deals, they by nature are few and far between. More importantly, they take a long time to mature and are unpredictable in terms of when they will close. TCS' value crosses ₹10 trillion after share price rallies more than 7% ahead of earnings

Credit rating agency <keyword id="125045" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fitch-ratings" source="Orion">Fitch Ratings</keyword> on Thursday said <keyword id="1417402" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-consultancy-services-limited" source="Orion">Tata Consultancy Services Limited</keyword>'s (<keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword>) revenue growth is likely to slow in the financial year ending March 2024 (FY24) amid the global economic slowdown, after strong 3QFY23 results.<br /><br />TCS reported 19 per cent year-on-year (yoy) revenue growth in 3QFY23 and 50bp quarter-on-quarter (qoq) expansion in the EBITDA margin, reflecting continued growth and the company's ability to pass on higher costs to customers, <keyword id="82981" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fitch" source="Orion">Fitch</keyword> said.<br /><br />Fitch expects TCS's revenue growth to slow to 11 per cent - 12 per cent in FY24 (FY23F: 18 per cent), as Fitch's December 2022 <keyword id="503893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-economic-outlook" source="Orion">Global Economic Outlook</keyword> forecasts US GDP growth to decline to 0.2 per cent in 2023 (2022F: 1.9 per cent) and eurozone GDP growth to decline to 0.2 per cent (2022F: 3.3 per cent), the rating agency said.<br /><br />"We expect a relatively short recession in the US in 2Q23 and 3Q23 but the recovery is unlikely to be rapid with GDP growth still subdued at 1.6 per cent in 2024. We forecast that the Eurozone qoq GDP growth will be negative in 1Q23 before turning positive in the second quarter," Fitch said.<br /><br />TCS received new orders worth $7.6 billion in 3QFY23 (3QFY22: $7.6 billion, 2QFY23: $8.1 billion). The book-to-bill ratio declined to 1.07x in 3QFY23 (3QFY22: 1.17x, historical average since 1QFY19: 1.24x), suggesting some signs of impending slowdown, the credit rating agency said.<br /><br />According to Fitch, its adjusted EBITDA of TCS is expected to remain stable yoy at 25 per cent - 26 per cent in FY24 (FY23F: 25 per cent, 3QFY23: 25.8 per cent) as easing cost pressures are offset by a weakening demand environment.<br /><br />"We expect employee attrition and wage pressures to subside as the global economy slows in 2023 even though TCS's last 12 months' employee attrition remained high at 21 per cent in 3QFY23 (FY19-21 average: 10 per cent), due to the continued shortage of skilled IT labour that led to the increased talent competition," Fitch said.<br /><br />Fitch also expects TCS to generate pre-dividend-free cash flow of Rs 465 billion in FY24 (FY23: Rs 390 billion), which is likely to be almost entirely distributed to shareholders via dividends and share buybacks.<br /><br />"We expect the company to continue to keep a net cash position of more than Rs 400 billion (FY22: Rs 440 billion). <br />The combination of both those factors is one of the major reasons behind the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/budget-blues-sensex-tanks-793-pts-logs-biggest-single-day-fall-in-three-years/articleshow/70128208.cms">biggest</a> Sensex crash in three years — and IT companies are bearing the brunt.<br /><br /><strong>The buyback plan<br /></strong><br />IT giants, Infosys and Wipro, whose buyback offers were open at the time of the budget, saw their stocks drop with the announcement of a 20% tax on the buyback of shares.<br /><br />Infosys and other IT giants — like TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra — have been using buybacks to payout shareholders because paying out dividends attracts a tax of 20.56%. <br /><br />For the past three years, these companies have been using a mix of both dividend payouts and share buybacks to distribute cash to their shareholders.<br /><br />

<br />Infosys announced a ₹8,260 buyback offer in January. Soon after, Wipro announced its buyback offer in April this year, which is the third of its kind in the past four years.<br /><br />Cumulatively in the past two years, Wipro has used buybacks to make 90% of its shareholder payouts. TCS, on the other hand, made 60% payouts using buybacks.<br /><br /><br /><br />

<ul><li>Infosys announced that it will consider buyback of equity shares during its board meeting set to take place tomorrow, on April 14.</li><li>Analysts estimate that shares may be bought up at ₹1,600 to ₹1,650 a piece.</li><li>According to them, the buyback is not because the management feels that Infosys’ shares are undervalued but because it is as per the company’s payout policy.</li><li>Infosys has thus far given out around 50% in dividend as what is left over will be spent on this buyback.</li></ul>Indian information technology (IT) giant, Infosys, may announce a buyback of equity shares after its board meeting scheduled for April 14. This year they've given out around 50% in dividend. The rest of the amount, which comes up to around ₹11,500 to ₹12,500 crore, they will spend on this buyback,” explained Sanjiv Hota from Sharekhan.<br /><br />Apurv Prasad from HDFC Securities told Business Insider India that the Bengaluru-based tech services major may buy fewer shares this time around.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Why is Infosys buying back shares?" comment="subhead" text="Why is Infosys buying back shares?"><span data-til="noop">Why is Infosys buying back shares?</span></cmsannotation><br />A buyback is when a company purchases free floating shares in the market. A process in which the promoters participate too.<br /><br />It is normally done at a price higher than what is prevailing in the market. Analysts estimate that Infosys will offer between 10% to 15% premium. <br /><br />Companies normally offer a buyback of shares to stem a fall in share prices, as many did after the pandemic rocked markets in March last year. <br /><br />However, since the government announced that dividends will be taxable as per the effective rates rates for corporate shareholders — more commonly known as promoters — in July 2020, some companies have opted for the buyback route to save tax.<br /><br />“Dividends are not the most efficient method of payouts for a certain set of investors because of the much higher slab rates,” explained Prasad. It’s common practice for leading companies to have a regular buyback strategy in place. “What happens is that if you don’t give the buyback, there’s a lot more cash which is not yielding high returns,” Prasad explained.<br /><br />Infosys is not alone in the balancing act of paying out dividends and offering buybacks. <br /><br /><ul><li>IT major Wipro’s first quarter net profits grew by 12.6% at ₹23.9 billion as compared to that of the same quarter last year, which was at ₹21.2 billion<br /></li><li>The company’s revenues for the first quarter of 2019-20 grew by 5.3% to ₹147.2 billion as compared to last year’s first quarter revenues at ₹139.8 billion.<br /></li><li>However, the operating margins for the IT services segment had a flat growth at 18.4%, growing by a mere 0.8%. <br /></li></ul>IT major Wipro’s first quarter net profits grew by 12.6% to ₹23.9 billion as compared to that of the same quarter last year. This was better than the 11% profit growth clocked by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys’ 5%.<br /><br />Wipro said it expects its IT services revenue will grow, at best, 2% in the following three months ending September, similar to that of Infosys.<br /><br />Infosys had projected a total growth 8.5% to 10% for the full year ending March 2020, which would imply a compounded quarterly growth 1.6% to 1.9%, according to a BOBCAPS research report. TCS to hinted at a double-digit growth for the year.<br /><br />Wipro’s revenue for the first quarter of 2019-20 grew by 5.3% to ₹147.2 billion but the margin in the IT services segment flattened at 18.4%. “We had a slower start to the year, we however remain focused on our operations and continue to invest in talent and capabilities for the future,” said Jatin Dalal, Chief Financial Officer of Wipro. <br /><br /><strong>New deals<br /></strong><br />All three major IT service providers from India have bagged new clients helping their outlook going forward. “Our efforts on client mining have resulted in an addition of three customers in more than $100 million bucket. We will continue to build differentiated capabilities to drive business transformation for our customers by investing in our big bets,” said Abidali Z. Neemuchwala, CEO and Executive Director at Wipro. <br /><br />TCS and Infosys too, announced big signings last week along with their quarterly numbers. TCS bagged new deals worth $5.7 billion in the last quarter while Infosys set a new record for itself with new deals worth $2.7 billion.<br /><br />However, the good news for investors is that Wipro plans to continue with its proposed buyback offer of 323 billion shares, which was approved by the board in April, after a green light from market regulator SEBI. The final shareholder approval came in on June 21.<br /><br />Investors may have been worried that the company may rollback the plan after the government decided to impose a 20% tax on share buyback because companies were using share buybacks to give money back to shareholders instead of dividends, which are also taxable in India.<br />
