<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11942831" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dave-grohl" source="Orion">Dave Grohl</keyword> said face masks have made it harder for him to understand people.</li><li>The frontman told "<keyword id="12999064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-howard-stern-show" source="Orion">The Howard Stern Show</keyword>" that he has been reading lips for 20 years.</li></ul><p><keyword id="12259132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="foo-fighters" source="Orion">Foo Fighters</keyword> frontman Dave Grohl told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5tvBO-ZIIs">"The Howard Stern Show"</a> that he has been reading lips for 20 years due to damaging his <keyword id="12790959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hearing" source="Orion">hearing</keyword> at concerts.</p><p>The former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters singer has previously revealed that he is <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/jun/27/dave-grohl-foo-fighters-nirvana-cobain">going deaf in his left ear</a> due to decades of performing on stage.</p><p>Grohl told Stern that the pandemic has made it harder to communicate with people because he is used to lip-reading.</p><p>"That's the worst thing about this pandemic shit is like people wearing masks," Grohl said. "I've been reading lips for like 20 years so when someone comes up to me they're like [muffled noises]. I'm like 'I'm a rock musician. I'm fucking deaf. I can't hear what you're saying.'"</p><p>Grohl said in the interview that he also has <a href="https://www.insider.com/ringing-in-ears">Tinnitus</a>, a persistent ringing in the ears, in both ears. However, the ear damage is worse in his left due to years of playing the drum. Grohl added that although he could not hear people properly when they were sitting next to him in a crowded restaurant, his hearing was great when it came to creating new <keyword id="11898471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="music" source="Orion">music</keyword>.</p><p>"I can hear the slightest little things," Grohl said. "Within the mix, I can fucking hear the minutia of everything we have done to that song like I really can."</p><div type="image" title="Global Citizen VAX LIVE: The Concert To Reunite The World" height="2662" width="3549" msid="89776681" hostid="261"></div><p>Grohl also told Stern that he refuses to use earpiece monitors, which can protect his ears, because it removes him "from the natural atmosphere sound" so he cannot hear his bandmates.</p><p>"I want to hear the audience in front of me and I want to be able to turn around and hear Taylor [Hawkins] right there and then go over here and hear Pat [Smear] and go over here and hear Chris [Shiflett] and stuff like that," Grohl said. "It messes with your spatial understanding of where you are on stage."</p><p>Grohl added that he has had the same monitor engineer, Ian Beveridge, for 31 years who makes sure the sound is perfect for him.</p><p>"So I'm not up there just getting my ass kicked by some loud stuff," He added. "It sounds great and I just don't like the in-ear things. Plus I have little fucking ear holes and those things when I put them in, they just pop out and I don't want to look like a praying mantis with these things all over my head."</p><p>Grohl continued: "I want to go out there and go nuts." </p>

It revealed that Fox wouldn't allow the band to play a full song and the Foo Fighters declined to play altogether:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>"The band and the Academy were extremely happy and excited to have Foo Fighters play as the first ever rock band on the Emmys. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55da7032bd86ef0e008b5473-1021-766/screen%20shot%202015-08-23%20at%206.57.01%20pm.png" alt="Foo Fighters 'rickroll' Westboro Baptist Church" data-mce-source="adamisntdumb" data-mce-caption="Foo Fighters 'rickroll' Westboro Baptist Church"><p class="source"><span>adamisntdumb</span></p><p class="caption">Foo Fighters 'rickroll' Westboro Baptist Church</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>The Foo Fighters <a href="http://time.com/4007453/foo-fighters-rickroll-westboro-baptist-church/">"Rick-rolled" the Westboro Baptist Church</a>, when the protest group gathered to protest at the entrance to one of their concerts on Friday.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The church, which is known for protesting military funerals with wildly insensitive signs, were picketing outside the Sprint Center in Kansas City, where the Foo Fighters were scheduled to perfom.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In response, the Foo Fighters drove up to the venue and lead a sing-along to Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up," a phenomenon known on the internet as "Rick-rolling."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The band brandished signs of their own, including "Keep it Clean" and "You Got Rick Roll'd Again."</span></p><p>The moment echoed another in 2011,&#xa0;when Foo Fighters responded to the hateful chants of the mob with an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWSeDYTHtiQ">impromptu flatbed concert</a>, the superstars fought fire with music yet again.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As you can see in the video below, the band sits in the bed of a pickup truck adorned with massive speakers blaring "American Idiot" from Green Day as it rounds the corner. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As the truck approaches the "church" group, the speakers&#xa0;begin blasting&#xa0;"Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley (hence "Rick"-rolling). Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the band, is seen holding a sign reading "You Got Rickroll'd (Again)" as Dave Grohl claps along to the song. There is also a rather large companion seen in a very small, colorful bathing suit holding a sign reading "Keep it Clean," an ode to the first time the Foo Fighters&#xa0;tussled with the group.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Given the two groups' shared history for loud, albeit peaceful, confrontations, a group of Foo Fighter fans seemed to be waiting for just such an occasion.
