In a bid to understand potential health risks associated with tattoos, a study was conducted, encompassing all Swedes diagnosed with <keyword id="21951472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lymphoma" source="keywords">lymphoma</keyword> between ages 20 to 60 from 2007 to 2017. For every lymphoma patient, three age- and sex-matched individuals without lymphoma were selected as controls, providing a comparative backdrop for the research. Participants completed detailed questionnaires covering various lifestyle factors. Tattooed individuals provided additional information regarding tattoo size, age at first tattoo, and ink colours. The study included a total of 5,591 participants—1,398 lymphoma cases and 4,193 controls. The researchers arrived at this number even after adjusting for smoking habits and education levels, which could influence both tattoo prevalence and lymphoma risk. Interestingly, the size of tattoos did not correlate with lymphoma risk. Here, it’s also crucial to note that lymphoma is a very rare disease. In 2022, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare reported a diagnosis rate of 22 per 100,000 people within the 20 to 60 age bracket. But on the other hand, it would be premature to issue specific tattoo-related health recommendations just yet, given that this is a solitary study. And, you know, there's nothing better than that first line that you pull, and then you ask them, "How was that?" And they look at you and they go, "That's it?"Manny: I would imagine that people are really nervous for their first tattoos, and I'm kind of just chilling. It's like a very pointed pinch on my skin.Josh: We started developing the ink about seven years ago. And the research was led by our two cofounders, Dr. Vandan Shah and Dr. Brennal Pierre, who are both PhDs in chemical engineering from NYU. And a lot of the research that went into this, we really just tested the ink on ourselves, and we tested over 50 different formulations over the course of hundreds of tattoos on our own bodies to get to where we are now.Manny: Some of these lines you're doing I'm not feeling at all. And then other ones I'm like, oh, my gosh, that hurts.Phil: Yeah, you'd be surprised, sometimes, the areas that hurt over areas that you don't feel a thing. Right now, as far as completion, I want to say about a little under 50%. Just about at 50%.Manny: I don't know why, in my head, I was like, "He's done. This is it."Josh: Permanent tattoos are made up of really small particles. And they're small enough that if I were able to put one particle in your dermis, your body would actually remove it. But the reason why they're permanent is because permanent-tattooing particles aggregate together. And when they go inside your dermis, they form these larger clumps of ink that are too big for your body to remove. And Ephemeral ink actually uses a lot of that similar theory and behavior, but our ink is biodegradable, and it breaks down over the course of nine to 15 months naturally. And as it breaks down, the clumps break apart, and your body is able to remove it.Phil: All right, you're all set. Congratulations.Manny: I like that it looks like a little bit like it has depth to it. It's not just flat. I'm a big fan of that. And I love plants, so I'm glad I decided to get a plant for my first tattoo.After the tattoo, they applied a hydrocolloid Band-Aid over the tattoo and walked me through the aftercare regimen.It's been about two weeks since I've gotten my tattoo, and the healing process went just as expected. I had some slight raised lines and some flaking here and there, but for the most part, it was all expected. Getting the actual tattoo was such a great experience. The studio is so relaxed, and the tattoo artist makes you feel so comfortable. And, honestly, the space is just really welcoming. So it's definitely something that I would recommend to my friends. If anything, showing people and telling them that this tattoo is temporary only made them want to get it. So I think it's definitely worth doing.

Von D first responded to those who have asked why she's chosen not to do laser tattoo removal for the ink she no longer wants."I actually did start lasering tattoos, and although I think laser tattoo removal is effective, I personally wasn't a good candidate considering how much coverage I wanted to remove," she wrote. "Laser is a slow (and extremely painful) process, that depending on your tattoo, can take more than 10 sessions, including long healing periods in between."Laser tattoo removals are typically done by dermatologists, as they're the only professionals who receive medical training in this area, according to <a href="https://www.aad.org/public/cosmetic/hair-removal/laser-tattoo-removal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the American Academy of Dermatology</a>.As Insider previously reported, <a href="https://www.insider.com/everything-you-should-know-about-tattoo-removal-2019-7">removals can take dozens of sessions</a> depending on the age of your tattoo, the number of colors involved, its size, and other factors."The number of treatments depends on your body's ability to eliminate ink from the skin. The study pool included 171 women who became pregnant between 2008 and 2020.Nearly all of the women included in the study had detectable levels in their urine of industrial chemicals that <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28751210/">may impact child development</a> as well as maternal health.Researchers say the findings not only demand further research on chemicals in cosmetics, but they echo a growing body of research on cancer risk in understudied populations: The highest levels of chemical exposure were found in women of color.<h2>The chemicals are widely used in plastics, paint, and dyes</h2>All but one of the women in the study had the chemical melamine and its byproduct, cyanuric acid, in their urine samples. Exposure to these chemicals is extra-toxic when they are combined, the researchers noted.Although they're known to have toxic effects, both chemicals are widely used in commercial products. Melamine can be found in dishware, plastics, kitchen counters, and flooring, as well as in industrial pesticides. Its derivatives may be added to plastics as a stabilizer, or used as cleaning solvents.Melamine is classified as a <a href="https://chemicalwatch.com/79216/melamine-possibly-carcinogenic-to-humans-says-iarc">possible carcinogen</a>, since researchers have yet to determine what level of exposure is associated with cancer in humans. Most people are exposed to relatively low levels of melamine in their environments, but illegal uses of the chemical in infant formula have had disastrous effects in the past.In 2008, melamine was linked to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2799451/">at least six deaths</a> and kidney dysfunction in about 300,000 infants in China. The chemical was later detected in infant formula and pet food, and it was officially recognized as a kidney toxicant.Chemicals from a similar group, aromatic amines, were found in more than 60% of study participants. Like the other chemicals studied, aromatic amines are mainly used in industrial settings but can also be found in <a href="https://www.ec.gc.ca/ese-ees/C58F84D0-9924-43C2-A967-E4FC58242C79/FSAR_Grouping-Azo-Pkg5-Aromatic%20Amines_EN.pdf">some consumer products</a>, including hair dye and tattoo ink.Several aromatic amines have been linked to <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470204508700895/fulltext">bladder cancer risk</a> in humans, and animal studies have <a href="https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/10.1289/EHP5133?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%20%200pubmed">suggested</a> that prenatal exposure may also affect fetal development, making this group of chemicals high-priority for future research.<h2>Women of color had higher levels of exposure</h2>Researchers with the NIH gathered a diverse pool of women for the ECHO study. About one-third (34%) were white, 40% were Latina, 20% were Black, 4% were Asians, and the remaining 3% were from other or multiple racial groups. They came from six states to represent different regions of the US.Across the board, women of color had higher levels of harmful chemicals in their urine compared to their white counterparts. Separate studies of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8834979/">parabens</a> and <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-022-06709-3&amp;amazonTrackingID=null&amp;site=in&amp;vikingID=62df0bab2bdf18614625469c&amp;platform=browser&amp;sc=false&amp;disabled=false&amp;sessionID=16617909698096c1u607v" rel="nofollow sponsored noindex">phthalates</a>, two common chemicals used in cosmetics and hair products, also revealed a <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-had-breast-cancer-link-black-women-beauty-products-cancer-2022-7">disproportionate impact on Black women.</a>"It's disconcerting that we continue to find higher levels of many of these harmful chemicals in people of color," study co-author Jessie Buckley, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in a news release. For instance, in the ECHO study, Black and Hispanic women had levels of 3,4-dichloroaniline (a chemical used in the production of dyes and pesticides) more than double the levels detected in white women.

Chemicals in hair dye may increase the risk of cancer in pregnant people — especially women of color

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Since 2011, hairdressers have increasingly complained that Brazilian blowouts, salon hair-straightening treatments that use heat and contain the chemical formaldehyde, were giving them headaches, nausea, and throat irritation.</li><li><keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> scientists looked into these treatments and concluded there should be a ban on formaldehyde in cosmetic treatments like the Brazilian blowout.</li><li>But emails obtained by the New York Times reportedly show the FDA ignored suggestions for a ban and has moved onto other cosmetics research, despite evidence the treatment was dangerous.</li></ul>Despite scientists' warnings over the danger of Brazilian blowouts, a popular type of chemical <keyword id="23927" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hair">hair</keyword> treatment that semi-permanently straightens any hair texture, the FDA has yet to crack down on the beauty treatment.Many of these hair treatments have been <a href="https://www.americanchemistry.com/ProductsTechnology/Flame-Retardants/Position-Statement-of-the-American-Chemistry-Councils-Formaldehyde-Panel-on-the-Formaldehyde-Conten.pdf">shown to contain formaldehyde</a> or ingredients that convert to formaldehyde — a chemical that can cause a person <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK217652/">headaches, nausea, nosebleeds</a>, burning of the eyes, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/brazilian-blowdry-cause-hairdressers-deadly-breathing-condition-2020-1">difficulty breathing</a> if they're exposed to it — upon air exposure.The chemical, which is also found in wood-burning stoves, kerosene heaters, and pressed-wood products like particle board, has been <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/formaldehyde/formaldehyde-fact-sheet">classified as a human carcinogen</a> by the The International Agency for Research on Cancer. People whose <a href="https://www.insider.com/jobs-linked-to-higher-risk-of-cancer-2019-7">jobs require they be exposed</a> to formaldehyde have shown they have an <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/formaldehyde">increased risk for rare nose and throat cancers</a> and myeloid leukemia.Despite these risks and years-old recommendations from agency scientists to ban Brazilian blowouts, the FDA hasn't taken action.<h2>From a 'priority' to silence</h2>According to an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/21/health/brazilian-blowout-formaldehyde-fda.html?referringSource=articleShare">investigation</a> from New York Times reporter Roni Caryn Rabin, email correspondence between FDA scientists and agency leaders show that blowout <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> concerns were flagged as early as 2014.That year, FDA cosmetics-division scientists were in the process of formally analyzing the risks associated with formaldehyde-containing beauty products.In June 2015, cosmetics division director Dr. Nakissa Sadrieh called the analysis a "priority" and that "this project is completed within expected timeline," as an increasing number of hairdressers who'd been regularly exposed to Brazilian blowouts complained to the FDA of migraines, blurred vision, and throat irritation, emails the New York Times obtained show. "This is a very big deal for us, and for the public," one FDA scientist wrote in an email addressed to her colleagues on July 26, 2016.Though Sadrieh's team completed the analysis and its findings convinced her to propose a formaldehyde ban, as more emails showed, it never happened.After December 2016, the FDA seemed to go silent on the issue, despite suggesting they'd be on the case.The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit that advocates for environmental and human health, requested any of the FDA's internal correspondence on the matter, but the agency hasn't fulfilled that request to this day.When Rabin reached out to multiple FDA officials about their lack of response, they denied comment or ignored her questions on the topic.<h2>The FDA cited a shift in focus to other cosmetics as reason for its inaction</h2>One FDA spokesperson told Rabin there wasn't a ban because the FDA is considering other "potential actions," though the spokesperson didn't cite what others the other routes could be.The spokesperson also told Rabin that the agency's cosmetics division has turned to other products, like tattoo ink, talc, and makeup allergens, for the time being.For now, salons are still allowed to use blowouts that contain the chemical. It's already tattooed about 3,300 volunteers over the last few years as part of product development, and is gearing up for its commercial debut sometime next year.Inque is betting that while there are many tattooed Americans, the population that wants a tattoo but has chosen not to get inked accounts for a much bigger market.InqueAbout three in 10 Americans have at least one tattoo, roughly the same <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/232790/forecast-of-apple-users-in-the-us/">share of people with iPhones</a> in the United States, according to an online survey by the <a href="https://theharrispoll.com/tattoos-can-take-any-number-of-forms-from-animals-to-quotes-to-cryptic-symbols-and-appear-in-all-sorts-of-spots-on-our-bodies-some-visible-in-everyday-life-others-not-so-much-but-one-thi/?mod=article_inline">Harris Poll</a> in 2015. Tattoos are especially popular among the younger generations, it found. A rise in demand injected <a href="https://www.ibisworld.com/industry-statistics/market-size/tattoo-artists-united-states">$1.7 billion</a> into the U.S. tattoo market in 2019."There are people who want that tattoo but are frightened away out of a fear of permanence or a fear of safety," said Robb Osinski, chief executive of Inque's parent company, Bambu Global. "We have proven out that there is a latent market for people who want tattoos and have chosen not to get them for those reasons."The <a href="https://www.bambuglobal.com/inque/">company</a> based in the unusual startup hamlet of Lowell, Massachusetts, has set out to raise early-stage venture funding with the goal of opening its first dozen tattoo parlors in early fall 2020. They will be scattered across the Boston, New York, and Philadelphia metro areas.Inque had already closed $6 million in convertible <a href="https://my.pitchbook.com/profile/279713-80/company/profile#insights">debt financing</a> from a group of unnamed angel investors in 2019.Inque is not the first tattoo company to go after commitment-phobes.Biomedical engineering students out of New York University developed a tattoo ink that fades and can be easily removed or changed. They <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/permanent-tattoos-easily-removeable-2016-5">said in old interviews</a> that they expected to make the ink available by 2017, but their company, <a href="https://www.ephemeraltattoos.com/">Ephemeral Tattoos</a>, doesn't appear to have updated its website since that year.<h2>How does it work?</h2>Inque's tattoo ink doesn't fade, rather, it can be removed in a single session.InqueThe ink is needled into the skin in the same method of traditional tattooing, but its molecular structure is different, Osinski claims. A low-power laser sends a specific wavelength of light to the ink particle, triggering a chemical reaction that makes the ink invisible. The process doesn't bombard and break apart the particles like conventional laser tattoo removal, which typically requires many sessions over months or years. The ink stays in place just under the skin but is turned off. This <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMIHFG7AzpA">video</a> shows it in action.<h2>The tattoo business is invulnerable to the decline of brick-and-mortar retail</h2>The plan is to open a dozen tattoo parlors across the Northeast where artists will use Inque's ink exclusively. Having its own studios will allow the company to control quality and technique, Osinski said. It's typical for tattoo artists to blend inks from different manufacturers to make new colors, but doing so would prevent Inque's ink from working, "which would ultimately bastardize the brand," he said.Osinski, who said he is not tattooed, said the business isn't threatened by the closing of retail stores across America."People still have to go somewhere to get a tattoo," he said. "You can't do that online."Still, the company's success could hinge on one factor: the artists it recruits.People put their trust in artists to make permanent changes to their bodies. They often follow artists on social media before making a selection and return to artists they like for future sessions. But last week, trace amounts of asbestos - a known cancer causer - were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asbestos-in-makeup-chemicals-in-beauty-products-2019-3">found in concealer as well as sparkly makeup marketed to kids at Claire's</a>, a reminder that toxic chemicals and compounds still lurk in beauty products. In March, Claire's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asbestos-in-makeup-chemicals-in-beauty-products-2019-3">voluntarily recalled some of its eye shadow and face powder</a> after asbestos was found in those products as well.The issue isn't limited to cosmetics: <a href="https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-compliance-enforcement/cosmetics-recalls-alerts">The FDA recently warned</a> about dangerous bacteria in a no-rinse cleansing foam used by hospital patients, alerted tattoo artists about ink contaminated with microorganisms, and found yeast in Young Living essential oils.In part, these problems arise because US beauty products are largely unregulated."The law does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market," the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-laws-regulations/fda-authority-over-cosmetics-how-cosmetics-are-not-fda-approved-are-fda-regulated">US Food and Drug Administration</a> (FDA) notes. Some toxic ingredients (like asbestos) are inadvertently added during the manufacturing process, while product makers put others in purposefully to help with absorption, shine, shimmer, or a non-greasy feel. Studies suggest that chemicals from the products people put on their faces and bodies can show <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24149971">up later in urine</a>. Certain compounds, especially when mixed together in the body, might <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29467107">up a person's odds of developing cancer</a> or mess with their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asbestos-in-makeup-chemicals-in-beauty-products-2019-3">reproductive ability</a>. But it's nearly impossible for consumers to determine what's in cosmetics even by reading the labels, since many compounds can be considered trade secrets and hide in the "parfum" or "fragrance" ingredients on a list.Alec Batis, a former research chemist who once made hair dyes for the <a href="https://www.loreal.com/brand/professional-products-division/redken">L'Oreal group</a>, is an expert in the risks and benefits of chemicals used in beauty products. <a href="http://www.creopop.com/" target="_blank">CreoPop calls itself</a> "the world's first 3-D pen with cool ink," but instead of heating plastic to its melting point like <a href="http://the3doodler.com/" target="_blank">the comparable 3Doodler</a>, it uses stereolithographic technology to harden liquid polymer (the pen's "ink") by exposing it to UV light.
This is exactly the same technology used in <a href="http://formlabs.com/" target="_blank">Formlabs Form 1 3-D printer</a>, but packed into a form factor that lets you (slowly) draw physical structures in 3-D space, as though you wield a magic paintbrush.
