New Delhi, <keyword id="7636498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Consumer-Products" source="Orion">Tata Consumer Products</keyword> Ltd (TCPL) on Wednesday reported a 29.67 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 358.57 crore in the first quarter ended June 30 on the back of a strong growth in its domestic business. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 276.51 crore in the April-June quarter a year ago, TCPL, earlier known as Tata Global Beverages Ltd, said in a BSE filing. Its revenue from operations was up 12.45 per cent to Rs 3,741.21 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 3,326.83 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal. "Revenue from operations increased by 12 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, mainly driven by strong growth of 16 per cent in India business, 3 per cent in international business and 5 per cent in non-branded business," TCPL said in an earnings statement. The "profit before exceptional items and tax at Rs 495 crore is higher by 23 per cent reflecting strong growth in the India branded business and improved performance in international and non-branded business," it said. Total expenses of the Tata Group FMCG arm stood at Rs 3,304.36 crore, up 11.68 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal compared to the year-ago period. TCPL's total income in the June quarter was at Rs 3,798.96 crore, up 12.99 per cent. In the June quarter, TCPL's overall branded business was up 13.11 per cent to Rs 3,372.75 crore. It was at Rs 2,981.82 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. TCPL's branded businesses include tea, coffee, water and other various value-added business. Its revenue from the Indian market in the branded business was at Rs 2,477.93 crore, up 15.51 per cent. In the coffee segment, it continued the strong performance with a revenue growth of 21 per cent in the domestic market. "For the quarter, the India foods business delivered 24 per cent revenue growth and 6 per cent volume growth," the company said. Revenue from its non-branded business, which includes plantation and extraction business for tea and coffee, was at Rs 377.05 crore, up 7.2 per cent in the June quarter. Tata Starbucks -- a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Consumer Products Ltd and Starbucks Corporation -- also recorded "strong revenue growth" of 21 per cent in the June quarter. TCPL Managing Director &amp; CEO Sunil D'Souza said that during the June quarter, it saw positive results from the interventions put in place for the branded tea business, which grew volumes for the second consecutive quarter. "We continue to maintain volume growth momentum in Salt, despite the pricing actions taken earlier to manage inflation," he added. The company continued to accelerate innovation across categories with a number of new launches to expand our total addressable market. "Our growth businesses (Tata Sampann, Tata Soulfull and NourishCo ) continued their strong growth trajectory, they grew by 58 per cent this quarter and accounted for 20 per cent of the India branded business. Tata Starbucks continued to deliver a strong performance along with store expansion," he said. Shares of Tata Consumer Products Ltd on Wednesday settled at Rs 874.10 on BSE, up 0.67 per cent from the previous close.

Its revenues grew by 4% to ₹1,834 crore. However, thankfully because of the chai and coffee lovers, the company – which is the world’s second largest manufacturer and distributor of tea – saw no impact of economic slowdown on sales. “Our flagship brands in India recorded good growth and we will continue to focus on white space opportunities in the Indian market,” said Ajoy Misra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Global Beverages. According to the company, the India tea business clocked a growth of 8% in volume and value terms. Meanwhile, Tata Starbucks’ sales grew 26% for the quarter. Its international sales are growing too. The total revenue from Tata Coffee and <keyword id="13486" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vietnam">Vietnam</keyword> unit saw an 18% growth along with a volume growth from tea and coffee in the UK, US and Canada. “Our international markets reflected volume growth in both tea and coffee. We will continue to strengthen our innovation agenda while further strengthening our core brands. Our JVs continue to perform well and have posted good revenue growth in the quarter,” said Misra.

Its net profit at ₹94.2 crore is 5% higher than ₹89.66 crore in the same quarter last year. Tata Starbucks, its joint venture with the US based coffee chain posted healthy revenue growth of 27%. It also opened 28 new stores in the third quarter. Its total stores now stand at 174 across 11 cities. TGB’s revenues went up by 5.7% to ₹954.72 crore from ₹911.58 crore in the same quarter last year. The company calls it steady growth despite the economic slowdown. “The Company recorded steady revenue growth despite challenging macroeconomic conditions in India and some key international markets. Our new launches in India are geared towards unlocking white space opportunities through greater localization. In international markets, we have launched products aimed at revitalizing the black tea category,” said Ajoy Misra, managing director and CEO of Tata Global Beverages. Under Tata Global Beverages umbrella, the company runs brands like Tata Tea, Tetley, Tata Coffee Grand, and Himalayan water. It also offers the energy drink Tata Gluco Plus which will now be rolled out nationwide. TGB’s India tea business grew by 7% in volume and 6% in value terms. In Canada too, the company saw a volume growth in branded tea. Tata Global Beverages has an approximate annual turnover of $1.4 billion, including its joint ventures. As per a survey conducted amongst Anganwadi hubs in Delhi by an NGO Initiative for What Works to Advance Women and Girls in the Economy (IWWAGE), 84% of the families are supportive, while 72% said they would be permitted to travel outside their homes to avail of training programmes. However, over two-thirds of women who are keen to start their business, are stalled by childcare and domestic responsibilities. “This study highlights that women are eager to take up business endeavours, given some space, understanding and encouragement in the form of skill training, economic management along with others,” said <keyword id="14268720" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neelanjana-gupta" source="Orion">Neelanjana Gupta</keyword>, project manager at IWWAGE. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Lack of financial support and skills" comment="subhead" text="Lack of financial support and skills">Lack of financial support and skills</cmsannotation> According to the report, the women have lack of clarity or information on what kind of business they can start; and don’t have the access to seed capital. As many as 76% of them have smartphones, and 78% have access to an internet connection. Also, 73% of the women have their own bank accounts, while 42% of them use them to avail government schemes and benefits. However, they lack knowledge about bank loans, interest rates or how to deposit or withdraw money from their accounts — which become hurdles for future entreprenuers. “Poor support networks, absence of mentors, and lack of access to information and communication technology are critical challenges faced by <keyword id="74945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-entrepreneurs" source="Orion">women entrepreneurs</keyword>,” says the report. Most of them also do not possess the know-how to start a business. Yet, a lot of them are keen to acquire skills to engage in activities that will help improve their economic status. “It reflects that despite the lack of support from family and other gendered boundations, women in India are looking for ways to support themselves and their family along with seeking social independence,” said Gupta. Half the respondents of the survey expressed an interest in taking up stitching and sewing to earn an income, followed by pickle/papad making; and embroidery. “These preferences were similar across the board for entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs surveyed with 81% respondents also expressing a keen interest in learning skills that were not heard or known of,” the report said. Most underprivileged women are keen to start businesses but lack skills and financial know-how

<keyword id="1042120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber" source="Orion">Uber</keyword> on Thursday refuted a report that claimed the ride-hailing major planned to exit the Indian market and held discussions with potential buyers to sell its India business. Bloomberg reported that the US-based company explored selling the India business, but "suspended discussions after tech startup valuations cratered." In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never explored exiting India -- not even for a minute -- and the report is "categorically false." "India is as important to Uber today as it was when we launched nine years ago. We are serving riders and drivers across more than 100 cities, hiring Indian talent aggressively, and planning for the next decade and beyond," the company spokesperson said. Uber competes with SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> in the country. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it will expand its product offerings and its team in India. "We continue to expand the product offerings for the Indian consumer. Whether it is autos, motos or high-capacity vehicles or rentals, India has always been a very big part of the Uber journey," he said during the Virtual i3 summit organised by Times Bridge. Uber aims to expand its engineering talent in India to more than 1,000 people from 700 at present, he had announced. Last month, <keyword id="2502101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber-india" source="Orion">Uber India</keyword>'s Director of Central Operations, Nitish Bhushan, said that they are "always striving to make driving with Uber a viable and attractive option for drivers and the recent hike in fares will directly boost their earnings per trip". To remove frustration for riders and drivers alike, the company is also showing trip destinations to drivers before they decide to accept the ride. "Drivers at the Uber advisory council meeting told us they would like more flexibility around payments. We are now showing drivers the mode of payment (cash or online) before the trip starts," the company said. To make the cash or online decision irrelevant, the company has also introduced a daily pay process for drivers. With these changes, the company said that they are also reinforcing their service quality expectations with drivers, especially in areas like cancellation and ensuring AC rides.
