As per reports, <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> has confirmed the sale of its Scunthorpe-based steel plant to investment firm <keyword id="3005006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Greybull-Capital">Greybull Capital</keyword>. The deal involves an investment package of 400 million pounds, the reports added. 
 
It was in December last year that Tata Steel had signed a memorandum of Intent with Greybull Capital so that it could enter exclusive negotiations for the potential sale of its long products Europe business. Prior to this, it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Klesch Group, which couldn’t be sustained. 
 
Along with the steel plant, the deal also includes mills in Teesside and northern France, an engineering workshop in Workington, a design consultancy in York, and associated distribution facilities. 
 
Talking of the investment firm Greybull Capital, it is "a family office which makes long-term investments in private companies" based in London, and is run by financiers Marc and Nathaniel Meyohas and Richard Perlhagen. 
 
Ever since Tata Steel announced in March this year that it would have to sell its UK steel business because of poor performance, the events have unfolded rather rapidly. The reasons behind the downfall are said to be poor demand and cheap Chinese imports.

Tata Steel has sold its UK plant to London-based Greybull Capital

<keyword id="6357147" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-steel" source="Orion">Tata Steel</keyword> on Tuesday announced the commissioning of a carbon capture unit at its plant in Jamshedpur. The unit can capture five tonnes of carbon per day, the company said. The company did not disclose the financial details of the project. "Tata Steel today (Tuesday) commissioned a five tonnes per day (TPD) carbon capture plant at its Jamshedpur Works, making it the country's first steel company to adopt such a carbon capture technology that extracts carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the blast furnace gas," Tata Steel said in a statement. Tata Steel will reuse the captured CO2 on site to promote the circular carbon economy, it said. Explaining the process, the company said the carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) facility uses amine-based technology and makes the captured carbon available for onsite reuse. The depleted CO2 gas is sent back to the gas network with increased calorific value. The CCU plant was inaugurated by Tata Steel CEO and MD T V Narendran. Narendran said, "The operational experience gathered from the plant will give us the required data and confidence to establish larger carbon capture plants in future." He added that as the next step, the company aims to establish scaled up facilities of CO2 capture integrated with utilisation avenues. Tata Steel commissions first ever plant in Jamshedpur to capture carbon dioxide

As part of the MoU, both companies shall undertake further technical discussions and initiate actions for conducting Joint Industrial Demonstration of the EASyMelt technology developed by SMS group, Tata Steel said in a statement. The move comes after the fluctuation in international markets with weak demand, higher costs and trade wars. Tata Steel Europe operations recorded a 90% drop in pre-tax profits for the financial year 2019-20. European steel producers witnessed a reduction in profits due to higher material costs and fall in prices. One reason is a global slowdown in auto sales. According to a Business Standard <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/amid-slowdown-steel-companies-reduce-prices-for-automakers-by-14-119111801491_1.html">report</a>, steelmakers have lowered the contract prices by up to 14%. The impact has led to temporary shutdowns and lower output. The steel company has now set plans to close the next financial year at £750m in pretax profits. Last week, Chinese steelmaker Jingye signed a deal to buy British Steel, which was sold by Tata three years ago.

The Board also approved the amalgamation of <keyword id="342421" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="trf-limited" source="Orion">TRF Limited</keyword> (34.11 per cent equity), an associate company of Tata Steel, into <keyword id="4252143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-steel-limited" source="Orion">Tata Steel Limited</keyword>. Tata Steel further said the proposed amalgamation is aimed at driving synergies, simplifying the group holding and management structure, and consolidating and strategically growing downstream operations and engineering capabilities. The Board has considered the proposal based on independent fairness and valuation opinions. It followed the process laid down under the Companies Act, 2013 and Securities and Exchange Board of India Regulations. The proposed amalgamation will enhance management efficiency, drive sharper strategic focus and improve agility across businesses based on the strong parental support from the Tata Steel leadership. "On completion, there will be further opportunities towards reduction of overhead and corporate costs. Each of the proposed amalgamations will be value-accretive for shareholders," the company said. TheBoards of all the amalgamating companies have also considered the proposals following due process and have unanimously approved the merger. The proposed amalgamation is also part of Tata Steel's continuing journey to simplify the group holding structure, the company said. According to the statement, since 2019, Tata Steel has reduced 116 associated entities (72 subsidiaries have ceased to exist, 20 associates and JVs have been eliminated and 24 companies are currently under liquidation). Tata Steel board approves merger of six subsidiary companies

Ranchi, <keyword id="6357147" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-steel" source="Orion">Tata Steel</keyword> sees enough growth opportunities within its existing facilities to actualise an expansion plan to achieve 40 million tonne capacity in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> by 2030, almost double of its current capability in the country, CEO and Managing Director <keyword id="1441007" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="t-v-narendran" source="Orion">T V Narendran</keyword> said. The steel giant will continue to hold talks with the UK government over a financial package for operations there, he said. The company has planned capital expenditure to the tune of Rs 12,000 crore for India operations, he said. "In India, basically we want to increase the capacity. We have already around 21 MT. It will be 25 MT soon because the Kalinganagar expansion is going on. We have a few more plans - Neelachal, Kalinganagar and Meramandali or Angul to achieve 40 million tonne capacity by 2030," <keyword id="347545" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendran" source="Orion">Narendran</keyword> told PTI in an interview here. There are multiple ongoing projects at various locations in India and the company has "prioritised completion of the 5 MTPA Kalinganagar expansion", he said. The company is in the process of expanding its plant capacity in Odisha's Kalinganagar to 8 MT from 3 MT. "Within nine months of acquisition, we have successfully ramped up (the capacity of) Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd to one million tonne on annualised basis," he said. The steel company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary <keyword id="13070787" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-steel-long-products-ltd" source="Orion">Tata Steel Long Products Ltd</keyword>, had completed the acquisition of Odisha-based one million tonne per annum steel mill NINL for a consideration of Rs 12,100 crore in July 2022. On capacity expansion, he said, "Basically the capex (capital expenditure) which you see is Rs 12,000 crore in India. It will be at that level for the next three years at least." In reply to a query, he categorically said that the entire growth plan is based on "organic" expansion, and there is no plan for any "inorganic" growth in the near future. "Within our facilities, we have enough opportunities. We don't need to acquire anything to achieve our growth aspiration," he said. Speaking on the steel major's UK operations, he said there was "status quo" but the company will continue to pursue talks. "On UK operations, there is no further development. We had conversations a couple of months back. They had given us an offer which is below or lower than what we had sought. After that, there is no further development. We will continue to have conversations with them," Narendran said. Tata Steel has sought a financial package of 1.5 billion pounds from the UK government to execute decarbonisation plans at its Port Talbot facility in South Wales under which it will install new plant machinery with low-emission technologies for replacing two blast furnaces, which are nearing the end of life in 12-24 months, and bringing down the carbon footprint. Asked about the future course on projects there, he said it would depend on the outcomes of the dialogue and the financial support from the UK government. The steel major owns a 5-MT facility at Port Talbot, which is the UK's largest steelworks employing around 8,000 people. "Our route and pace of decarbonisation across geographies will be calibrated for each location based on the local regulatory framework, government support and willingness of customers to pay for higher-cost green steel," he said. Tata Steel group is among the top global steel companies with an annual crude steel capacity of 35 million tonne. Tata Steel UK had submitted a proposal to transition into a new process route, which will be greener and more sustainable. The UK government has come back with a counter-proposal, which is less than what the company had asked for, Narendran told PTI in a video conference. Tata Steel will now have to re-work on its decarbonisation plans for the UK business. It will rethink the facilities that can be set up and those which can't be taken forward, he said. "We need to re-look at the configuration because our proposal we felt was the most optimal proposal from the long-term sustainability of the site but obviously the UK government will also be limited by how much support they can give because the UK itself is in a difficult position economically. So, we have seen what they have offered. Let us now work and see if there is something which can be worth it," the company official said. When asked about the company's stance on exiting the UK business, which has been affecting the company's balance sheets, Narendran said Tata Steel can not see its future in the UK without the support of the government there. "What I have said last time is we believe that we can't create a future in the UK without some government support. Now that the government has come back with a proposal... let's see if based on their offer we do something which can work," he said. UK govt offered us a counter-package for Port Talbot plant, says Tata Steel CEO

Facing reduction in demand due to the lockdown in the country, steel makers <keyword id="6357529" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sail">SAIL</keyword> and Tata Steel have reduced their output by about 50%, according to sources. State-owned <keyword id="64877" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Steel-Authority-of-India-Ltd">Steel Authority of India Ltd</keyword> (SAIL) and private player Tata Steel both contribute about 20 per cent to India's total steel <keyword id="22637" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="production">production</keyword>. As per industry sources, SAIL and Tata Steel have scaled down production by about 50%. The companies have taken the decision because of the reduced demand in the market after the lockdown, which has impacted logistics movement, the sources said adding that buyers are also reluctant in placing orders. Most of the staff of the companies are working from home and only important sites like blast furnaces and coke oven batteries etc at the plants, which can not be closed, are running. Tata Steel had earlier said as the outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted its business and operations, the company's integrated steel facilities in Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar and subsidiaries <keyword id="6924221" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel-BSL">Tata Steel BSL</keyword> and <keyword id="3318681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel-long-products">Tata Steel Long Products</keyword> have started reducing production levels while operations in the downstream facilities have been suspended and put on care and maintenance mode. The company had however not provided any figures with respect to reduced production levels. While a SAIL official confirmed reducing output by about 50 per cent over phone, an e-mail query sent to Tata Steel remained unanswered. SAIL has five integrated steel plants in Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Tata Steel has two plants in Odisha and Jharkhand.

<keyword id="30287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SP">S&amp;P</keyword> Global <keyword id="75515" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratings">Ratings</keyword> on Wednesday said it has lowered its ratings outlook on Tata <keyword id="34570" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel">Steel</keyword> as the agency does not foresee improvement in the steel maker's earnings and financial profile over the next 12-18 months. The outlook reflects risks of further weakening in Tata Steel's credit profile if the effect of economic conditions and lower commodity prices are more prolonged than our current expectations, S&amp;P Global Ratings said in a statement. The agency lowered its long-term foreign currency issuer credit rating on Tata Steel and subsidiary ABJA Investment Co. Pte. Ltd., and the issue rating on various US-dollar denominated senior unsecured notes ABJA has issued, to 'B+' from 'BB-'. "The downgrade mainly reflects our expectation that the improvement in Tata Steel's earnings and financial profile, on which the 'BB-' rating was based, is unlikely to materialise in the next 12-18 months. This is mainly due to Covid-19 related disruptions and the consequent economic effects," it said. S&amp;P Global Ratings has also lowered its rating on <keyword id="437791" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel-UK-Holdings">Tata Steel UK Holdings</keyword> Ltd (TSUKH) to 'B' from 'B+' in line with the rating action on its parent, Tata Steel. Even before recent developments, the agency said, Tata Steel's earnings in the first nine months of fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, had under-performed its expectations. However, meaningful price hikes between December 2019 and March 2020, together with a seasonally stronger January-March quarter meant there was still potential for the company's financial profile to improve, but now S&amp;P Global Ratings sees this as unlikely. "(Instead) We see a more significant impact on Tata Steel's credit profile coming from its higher cost European operations," it said. While both the company's Europe plants (in the UK and the Netherlands) are still running, they are doing so at significantly reduced capacity. "In our base case, we assume depressed volumes for at least one quarter, followed by a recovery to more normal levels," it noted. The agency further said it could lower the rating on Tata Steel if the company's credit profile remains pressured for longer than current expectations. The outlook would be revised back to stable only if the impact of the economic slowdown is less than our current expectation, it said.
