The financial details of the deal have not been made public and the two companies reportedly plan on filing for approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) soon. <h2>Tata’s iPhone production in India to get a boost</h2>Tata already operates an iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka, which it acquired from Taiwanese giant Wistron last year. The company is building a second plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Apple is expected to export the bulk of the domestically produced Pro models of the iPhone 16 series to the US, Europe and the Middle East after meeting the local demand. Apple saw robust sales of around $8 billion in the country in FY24, an increase of around 33% year-on-year. Apple shipped over 10 million iPhones in 2023 in India, up from 6 million in 2022. The iPhone Pro models will be made in India for the first time this year

New Delhi, Driven by domestic manufacturing, <keyword id="626905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple-iphones" source="Orion">Apple iPhones</keyword> are set to garner 7 per cent market share in the Android-dominated smartphone market in India this year, latest data showed on Saturday, as the tech giant gears up to globally launch its flagship devices next week. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> <keyword id="6354606" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iphone" source="Orion">iPhone</keyword> shipments grew 68 per cent (year-on-year) in the first half of this year in the country. In the first half, Apple secured a 6 per cent market share in the Indian smartphone market and dominated the super-premium smartphone segment (priced between Rs 50,000-Rs 100,000) with a robust 63 per cent market share, according to data from market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR). CMR estimates the iPhone 15 shipments in the launch quarter to hover around 65 per cent, driven by an increased 'Make in India' initiatives. iPhone domestic manufacturing in the country has significantly increased over the past four year. In another push to its India manufacturing dream, Apple maker Foxconn started the local production of the next-generation of iPhone 15 at its Sriperumbudur facility near Tamil Nadu faster than ever. A small set of 'Make in India' iPhone 15 units is likely to be exported to other countries within a short span of time from its global launch. Other Apple suppliers in India like <keyword id="274256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pegatron" source="Orion">Pegatron</keyword> and Wistron (being acquired by the <keyword id="6355725" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-group" source="Orion">Tata Group</keyword>) will also assemble iPhone 15 as soon as possible, according to sources. CMR anticipates a 25 per cent YoY growth in iPhone shipments with the iPhone 15 series. iPhone 14 series shipments in launch quarter were around 58 per cent and iPhone 13 series were around 23 per cent in the country. "Apple has enjoyed a positive growth trajectory in India in recent years, with sales of its older generation iPhones steering growth. The upcoming iPhone 15 series is poised to maintain this growth momentum," Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS. However, its success will hinge on Apple's ability to effectively manage any potential production challenges and shipment delays with the 15 line-up, and especially the 'Pro' models, he added. The market momentum for iPhones in India have been driven by the sales of the previous generaIon iPhones. Apple is hosting its next big global product launch -- showcasing the fresh lineup of iPhone 15 series -- on September 12. The tech giant is also expected to announce new Apple Watches at the event.

This is because Pegatron is only one of Apple’s many partners that help the US giant manufacture its signature iPhones. Who gets Apple’s new iPhone orders? In India, the backbone of Apple’s manufacturing is managed by Wistron and Foxconn. While they may welcome the move to fill in the gap left behind by Pegatron, Apple could likely approach a new player altogether. Luxshare Precision Industry is reportedly in line to become the first mainland company to assemble the iPhone, according to a local Chinese news outlet <a href="https://twitter.com/thepapercn?lang=en">The Paper</a>. Pegatron, on the other hand, is located in Taiwan. Besides, Foxconn dealt with its share of controversy back in 2010 when a spate of suicides led to protests over the harsh working environment at its plants. Since then, Apple has upped its standards and started to audit its third-party manufacturers, with the condition that labour law violations may lead to the termination of ongoing business. “Pegatron’s current iPhone business should not be affected. However, it is likely that Pegatron will lose some orders for the Apple’s new handsets next year to Luxshare, which is poised to become a new iPhone assembler in 2021,” GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu told <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/apple-suspends-new-business-with-pegatron-over-labor-violations">Bloomberg</a>. These new orders include Apple’s four new 5G iPhones. Pegatron’s shares were down over 2% on the Taiwan Stock Exchange before closing, while Luxshare Precision Industry’s stock was up nearly 1% on the Shanghai Stock Exchange at the end of Monday. Pegatron went out of its way to hide labour code violations Apple claims that even though it did not find any evidence that hints at forced or underage labour, it did find falsified paperwork that hid several violations. “The individuals at Pegatron responsible for the violations went to extraordinary lengths to evade our oversight mechanisms,” the company said in a statement. Pegatron has clarified that the violations were incidents of students working night shifts, overtime, and positions that were unrelated to their degree in college. The manager who oversaw the student workers’ program has since been fired, and quick action has been taken to strengthen procedures within its facilities. As of right now, all student workers have been pulled off the production lines and sent home with the proper compensation and necessary arrangements.
