Meanwhile, a bunch of Indian stocks rallied on Thursday celebrating a possible deal that will end the uncertainty as they derive a big chunk of their business from the UK. Three of those companies were from the Tata Group namely, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Communications, and Tata Motors, which owns the UK-based Jaguar Land Rover brands of luxury cars. There are now a record 842 Indian companies operating in the UK, with combined revenues of over £48 billion, according to a Grant Thornton report in April 2019. Boris Johnson's Brexit deal sets Tata Group and other stocks alight in India

Hence, its results are highly dependent on that of the UK luxury vehicle brand. </li><li>As concerns over a <keyword id="106030" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-China">US-China</keyword> <keyword id="182860" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-war">trade war</keyword> mount, JLR is shutting down production at its facility in Solihull, UK for two weeks. </li></ul>The last few years have been a mixed bag for Tata Motors in terms of commercial performance as its fortunes have been directly tied to its UK luxury car business, <keyword id="6354362" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaguar-Land-Rover">Jaguar Land Rover</keyword> (JLR), which provides a bulk of its revenues and profits. For example, in the year ended March 2018, the unit comprised 77% of Tata Motors’ revenue from automotive operations. When JLR does well, Tata Motors does well and vice versa. As demand has slumped in the UK and Europe amid Brexit uncertainty, JLR had pinned its hopes on the luxury vehicle market in China. Last year, it set up a manufacturing facility in the city of Changshu through a joint venture with Chery Automobile Ltd. The unit posted record sales in China in 2017, with sales up 23% to 146,399 units. However, the US-China trade war has significantly hurt JLR’s sales this year, and by extension, has dragged down Tata Motors’ performance. On 8 October, JLR <a href="https://www.tatamotors.com/force-download/?att_id=zcM4mA1L9Nyxl-jdZaZX7Q==&amp;file=iIX5SvrxPyPB5cb7u10VMw==">announced</a> that its global sales fell by 12% in September, driven by a 46% plunge in sales in China owing to the uncertainty and weak consumer demand in the light of trade tensions and import duty changes. The results caused Tata Motors’ share price on the Bombay Stock Exchange to fall by nearly 14% to ₹186 - the lowest level since mid- 2012. Earlier this year, Tata Motors posted its worst quarterly result since 2009 as JLR’s sales in China plummeted. For the quarter ended June 2018, JLR reported a loss of £210m, causing Tata Motors’ net loss for the period to widen to <a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/e11b2867-9ecf-453e-9afd-7188bb09be3e.pdf">₹18.6 billion</a>. As concerns over a US-China trade war mount, Tata Motors is responding to the decline in Chinese demand by lowering production and cutting costs where it can. The Indian carmaker has decided to shut down production at its manufacturing facility in Solihull, UK for two weeks this month. Last month, JLR said its plant in Castle Bromwich would transition to a three-day workweek from October to December.

Boris Johnson is not the only one celebrating a historic majority  for UK conservatives— a bunch of Indian stocks are thrilled too

<ul><li>Tata Motors reported a loss of ₹36.8 billion in Q1 FY20.</li><li>While trouble continues with its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover, the company claims JLR is undergoing a major transformation.</li><li>Tata Motors’ net revenue fell by 8% for the first quarter. </li></ul>Tata Motors posted a massive loss of ₹36.8 billion in the first quarter of the current financial year. The losses for the quarter have doubled as compared to ₹18.6 billion in the same quarter of last year. Its revenues too have gone down by 8% to ₹608 billion. “Over the past few years we had struck a good balance between managing market dynamics and financial health. However, this time, despite our continuous turnaround effort we could not prevent some impact on our Q1 performance,” said Guenter Butschek, CEO and MD, Tata Motors, in a statement. Tata Motors, like all other auto companies is facing the heat of sales slowdown. Adding to that are from its UK-owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover. This subsidiary’s net revenue stood at ₹50.74 billion, 2.8% lower than it was, last year. "The continued slow down across the auto industry due to weak consumer sentiments, liquidity stress and the impact of axle load effect particularly in medium/heavy duty, impacted overall demand,” said Butschek. ‘Adapting to the environment’ Global rating agencies Fitch Ratings and Moody’s both had downgraded Tata Motors with a negative outlook. Jaguar Land Rover’s global sales continued to decline in May with the company reporting a 12% dip in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jaguar-land-rover-global-sales-dip-12-in-may-4086381.html">May 2019.</a> In June 2019, its sales dropped by 9.6% year-on-year. In June 2019, Tata Motors <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/tata-motors-global-sales-dip-5-in-june-4195251.html">reported </a>a 14% decline in India sales, while a 5% drop was seen in global sales. Cumulatively, <keyword id="635285" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors-sales">Tata Motors sales</keyword> in the first quarter of 2019-20 fell by 20%. However, Tata Motors still hopes for a turnaround. “With the Budget announcement and upcoming festive season, we expect some tailwinds for the remaining FY20,” said Butschek. The company also hopes to gain from JLR and BMW’s collaboration on building the next-generation Electric Drive Units. “Jaguar Land Rover is in a period of major transformation. We are simplifying our business, delivering on our product strategy and adapting to the tough market environment. Strong interest in its Jaguar E-Pace, electric Jaguar I-Pace, and Range Rover Velar models drove unit sales up about 8% in the UK and North America, but lackluster demand in China meant overall retail sales slid about 6% to below 579,000 vehicles. Wholesale volumes also fell 11% to around 565,000 units. Weaker sales contributed to JLR's pre-tax loss of about £3.6 billion - a sharp swing from its pre-tax profit of £1.5 billion ($1.9 billion) in the previous financial year. However, exclude £3.3 billion in non-cash impairment charges and transformation costs, and the loss was £358 million.JLR's plan to revitalize its business is to cut costs, boost efficiency, and bet on new technologies. It has realized about £1.3 billion worth of cost savings from its 'Charge' transformation program. It has also invested £3.8 billion in developing new products and technologies, expanding manufacturing, and creating products more efficiently. However, the company faces "multiple headwinds simultaneously sweeping the automotive industry," said CEO Ralf Speth.The Tata Motors division sold more commercial and passenger vehicles to both wholesale and retail customers in the period, sending its net revenue up 20% to 692 billion rupees ($9.9 billion) and generating adjusted pre-tax profits of 26 billion rupees ($373 million). Jaguar Land Rover's brutal loss due to weak Chinese demand is hammering shares of Britain's biggest carmaker

Known for its heavy duty trucks, buses and passenger vehicles, Tata Motors is foraying into the arena of defence where it has smelt the opportunity of earning whopping revenues. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Shares-of-Tata-Motors-are-surging-Know-why/articleshow/48187327.cms">At a time when its shares are surging</a>, it is transitioning from just providing logistic support to supplying combat vehicles including front line combat vehicles, as per a news report by The Economic Times. Simultaneously, the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Motorsto-triple-its-commercial-vehicles-export/articleshow/48176534.cms">is planning to open up new overseas markets through the hub-and-spoke model</a> in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asean and Latin America. 
 
The company is building tie ups with the brands well recognized in the defence segment, including SUPACAT, a UK-based high mobility vehicle specialist. This will supposedly provide technical assistance for its Light Armoured Multi-role Vehicle (LAMV) project, a combat vehicle based on a defence ministry programme. The company also has collaborated with Malaysian-based DRB-HICOM for import, distribution and assembly of Tata Motors' commercial vehicles and defence range in Malaysia, a step towards expanding into the international market, confirms the ET report. 
 
Besides, the LAMV and its upgrade programmes include missiles carriers, mine protected vehicles, main battle tanks and infantry combat vehicles, Tata has also developed the WHAP (Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform). 
Defence business is expected to account for 15 % of its total revenues, a 5 times jump from 3 % at present, and exports volumes to increase to 150,000 units from about 50,000 in 2014-15. 
 
"The potential is very large...10 % is not a good number, our defence business can be much bigger than 15 per cent in the future," Ravindra Pisharody, executive director and head of commercial vehicle business at Tata Motors told the ET. Pisharody was referring to Rs 900 crore order that Tata Motors secured from the Indian Army for supplying 1,200 trucks for material handling cranes for loading, unloading and transportation of ammunition pallets, spares and other operational equipment. 
 
Not only India, the Indian multinational automaker has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Motors-has-entered-Vietnam-market/articleshow/47298143.cms">supplied defence vehicles in markets including the ASEAN, SAARC and Africa</a>. The company recently received an order from Myanmar for about 500 units and it completed deliveries for 520 defence vehicles to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali.

Revenue from JLR fell by a billion dollars in the year ending March 2019 and made profit in only one of the four quarters last year. Last year, Tata Motors had to take an impairment-- write down the value-- of ₹27,838 crore due to weak sales and profitability at JLR. Things continue to look bleak even after 4,500 jobs were axed. This posed a question in front of N Chandrasekharan, the Chairman of the group's parent Tata Sons, on how long will the conglomerate continue to back the bleeding giant. "A company cannot shut the cash tap as the very nature of this business demands continuous investment in product and technology development," he <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/auto/cars-jaguar-land-rover-looking-for-financial-partnership-in-china-tata-chairman-n-chandrasekaran-539207" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> said at the Annual General Meeting. "There are many discussions from tactical to strategic for such partnerships. Opportunities are coming and we keep evaluating them and as long as it is in the interest of Tata Motors. We will forge such partnerships so that we are able to address the capex issue," he told the shareholders. Tata Motors has already joined hands with German giant and rival BMW recently for a collaboration for manufacturing electric vehicles under the JLR banner.  Any recovery for the JLR hinges a lot on how Brexit unfolds. “Uncertainty around an orderly outcome of Brexit negotiations and the evolving global tariffs situation pose risks, in particular to TML's JLR business, which faces a significant level of production-sales mismatch due to concentration of its production base in the UK,” global ratings agency Fitch said while downgrading Tata Motors for JLR's troubles. Aside from Brexit, the US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy are also compounding JLR's problems. China has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car but sale volumes fell a sharp 29% between April and June this year, compared to the same time last year. A month back, credit rating agency Moody’s had downgraded Tata Motors. In addition to JLR related troubles, Tata Motors’ domestic business is also troubled by a general slowdown in the auto market. In June 2019, Tata Motors <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/tata-motors-global-sales-dip-5-in-june-4195251.html">reported </a>a 14% decline in India sales, while a 5% drop was seen in global sales. Tata Motors is looking for partnerships to revive Jaguar Land Rover

<keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, the Indian multinational automotive manufacturing company, is hopeful of closing this financial year registering a 25% growth in the sales of commercial vehicle sales. Not only this, the Mumbai-based company also hopes to continue the run next year as well on replacement demand to meet new emission norms and a pick-up in the economy. 
 
In another development, the hybrid bus order that it has got from BMC is about to be theirs. "We have already signed an agreement with BMC and expect the final order for 25 hybrid buses any day now. This is the single-largest order for hybrid in the country till date," said Ravi Pisharody, Tata Motors Executive Director for the commercial vehicle business unit. 
 
Talking on the sales, he said, "Truck sales have overall reached the 2011-12 peak, and we have been leading the market. We hope to close this fiscal year with around 25 per cent spike in overall sales. The first two months of the current quarter have been very good, and March should be better." 
 
"We hope to continue the sales growth next fiscal year as well, which in percentage terms may be lower than this fiscal, considering the high base. Still, we expect to clock 10- 15 per cent jump in sales as BS-IV norms will kick in from April 2017. I expect the second half of the next fiscal year to be better than H1," he added. 
 
Last year in April and May, Tata Motors had excelled in the sales front. The starting of this year saw the domestic CV sales rising 20% (to 30,670 units) and exports rising 42% (to 5,636 units) in January and 22% (to 14,872 units) and 31% (to 5,142 units), in February, respectively.

Fitch Ratings has downgraded the automaker as with lesser chances of “TML's profitability and free cash generation in the next two to three years”. Tata Motors’ <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/tata-motors-slips-3-on-moodys-downgrade-4122961.html">shares</a> fell 3% after the downgrade. The Fitch Ratings report mentioned that another reason for its downgrade was that “JLR faces elevated risks.” Jaguar Land Rover’s global sales continued to decline in May with the company reporting a 12% dip in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jaguar-land-rover-global-sales-dip-12-in-may-4086381.html">May 2019.</a> In June 2019, its sales dropped by 9.6% year-on-year. Brexit, US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy could be the reasons for the losses incurred by JLR.
