As part of the MoU inked between the parties, 250 new fast-charging stations for electric commercial vehicles would be set up across the country. Strategically located in and around over 50 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi, among others, these new charging stations will significantly increase the existing network of 540 commercial vehicle charging points, Tata Motors said in a statement. Basis its understanding of the commercial EV movement, the commercial vehicle major will recommend optimal locations and nearest dealerships for setting up the fast-charging stations, the company said. While Delta Electronics will supply the necessary hardware, Thunderplus Solutions will install and operate them, it added. E-commerce companies, parcel and courier service providers, among other industries, are increasing the adoption of commercial EVs for last-mile deliveries. "Expanding the available charging infrastructure on high-use routes will encourage more customers to opt for electric commercial vehicles and improve vehicle uptime, resulting in higher revenues and better profitability, while contributing towards a cleaner, greener environment," Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles Vice President and Business Head -- SCV &amp; PU -- Vinay Pathak said. Currently, Tata Motors sells Ace EVs to cater to various last-mile delivery requirements. The model is supported by over 150 electric vehicle service centres across the country. Tata Motors ties up with two firms to expand charging infra for electric CVs

Peter Rawlinson, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-ceo-comments-tesla-losing-its-way-elon-musk-distracted-2024-5">CEO of Lucid Motors and a former VP of engineering at Tesla</a>, spoke on the Cars and Culture podcast last week that most of the <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Electric-Vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> on offer "frankly suck." Asked whether EVs in the US have a perception problem, Rawlinson said the problem was "not perception, but reality." "I think many people have driven EVs that frankly suck. I know because I drive all the competition," he said. "I think that the American public has been ill-served by underwhelming EVs," Rawlinson added. Rawlinson, who previously worked for Elon Musk and helped build Lucid, became CEO of Lucid in 2019. The EV startup is gearing up to launch its new electric SUV, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luvid-gravity-suv-details-photos-tesla-topping-range-interior-cargo-2023-11" target="_blank">$94,900 Gravit</a>y, with production expected to start by the end of this year. Lucid has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-vs-lucid-which-is-better">touted its industry-leading technology</a> but continues to be stuck in the so-called EV "valley of death." The company reported revenues of $200 million in the most recent quarter and a net loss of $992 million. In August, it secured another $1.5 billion in investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, its majority shareholder. Meanwhile, EV sales growth in the US has slowed this year amid a dearth of affordable electric options. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in the US in September was $56,000, compared to $48,397 for combustion-engine vehicles. <h2>China races ahead</h2>US automakers are grappling with the challenge posed by Chinese EV companies like BYD and Xiaomi, who have rolled out affordable electric vehicles packed with advanced technology. While these companies are unable to sell their cars in America due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11">cripplingly high tariffs</a>, they are putting Western companies under pressure in China and attracting plaudits in the US, with Ford CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-ceo-driving-xiaomi-su7-electric-vehicles-ev-2024-10">Jim Farley praising Xiaomi's SU7 EV</a>. Rawlinson previously described China's automakers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-chinese-automakers-years-behind-tesla-electric-vehicles-elon-musk-2024-5">as "years behind" the likes of Tesla</a> in terms of core EV technology. Speaking on the Cars and Culture podcast, he said Chinese companies like BYD were ahead of US rivals in battery chemistry and assisted driving technology — but said they benefit from an "uneven playing field" due to government subsidies. "I think the Chinese do have a fundamental advantage because when the government says go, they all go in the same direction instead of arguing with each other," Rawlinson said. A study from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies think tank, released earlier this year, found that China has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-electric-vehicles-government-subsidies-win-ev-race-byd-tesla-2024-6">provided at least $230 billion in support</a> to electric vehicle makers such as BYD since 2009. "I'd say they're still behind in terms of the core EV powertrain technology, but don't underestimate them," Rawlinson added. Lucid did not respond to a request for comment, sent outside normal working hours. Some people had advised Tata to sell the business, and the Ford officials came to Bombay House to hold talks. During the meeting at the Tata headquarters, the American company evinced interest in buying out the business after the not-so-warm response to the hatchback car for over a year since launch. Soon, top Tata officials, led by Ratan Tata, went to the US for a further meeting, which lasted about three hours. According to a person who attended the meeting, officials from Ford "humiliated" the visiting Indians at the meeting in Detroit. "You do not know anything, why did you start the passenger car division at all," the Ford officials told their guests, and spoke about doing a favour to the Indian company by buying out the latter's business. The team decided to return to India immediately after the meeting, which was described as "humiliating" by the person present. On the 90-minute flight taking them back to New York, a sombre Ratan Tata spoke very few words. "This was in 1999 and come 2008, the same Ford's <keyword id="19916884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JLR" source="keywords">JLR</keyword> was bought by us. Ford chairman Bill Ford thanked Tata, saying, 'You are doing us a big favour by buying JLR'," Pravin Kadle, a long-time group veteran, had recounted during a public event a few years ago. In 2008, the Tata Group bought the iconic brands from making sedans and sports utility vehicles in a USD 2.23-billion deal from Ford. Post-acquisition, the Tata Group has scripted one of the most fabulous turnarounds in the auto industry and has been able to position the marquee British brands as formidable entities in the fiercely competitive global car market. Even as Tata Motors has come a long way and gained market share in India, it continues to earn a significant part of its revenues from the JLR.

"And this time, all festivals are in October..we expect about 5-10 per cent sales growth during the period as compared to last year," he added. The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched a midsize SUV coupe <keyword id="20400827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curvv" source="keywords">Curvv</keyword> with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. "The introduction of the Curvv further enhances our SUV portfolio as a comprehensive mid-SUV product with multiple powertrains, several first-in-segment features, a brand new capable architecture - ATLAS and Level 2 ADAS," Chandra said. Besides Curvv, Tata Motors sells models like Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari in the domestic market.
