(HMIL), a subsidiary of the Korean giant Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), recently sought to escape this valuation trap by listing in India, a market where investor optimism commands premium pricing. But its valuation raised many eyebrows! Now that a month and a half has gone by since its listing, time is apt to examine if this gamble paid off. Will <keyword id="93460" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai-india" source="Orion">Hyundai India</keyword> justify its high valuation? Or does the listing highlight broader questions about the overheated valuation dynamics of Indian markets? A record-breaking <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword> but questions remain Hyundai Motor India’s mega Initial Public Offering (IPO), launched in October 2024, broke records by raising ₹27,870 crore, making it India’s largest-ever IPO. The offer was oversubscribed by 2.37 times, highlighting robust demand. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss. <h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. On listing, Hyundai was valued at $18 billion, positioning it as one of India’s most valuable automotive companies. However, such high valuations often temper investor enthusiasm, resulting in more cautious short-term outcomes. For most investors, the Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio is the most preferred parameter to gauge if a company is overvalued or undervalued. With a P/E ratio of 26.3, HMIL was priced significantly above the Indian automotive industry average of 24.4. Globally, automotive companies operate with much lower P/E ratios, reflecting mature market conditions and slower growth trajectories. HMIL’s South Korean parent Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) trades at a meagre 3.07, believe it or not! For Indian investors, the high premium hinted at overvaluation despite Hyundai’s strong domestic position. Such stark difference in valuation obviously sparked debates — is the Indian market assigning a premium to Hyundai Motor India’s growth potential, or is it simply reflecting the general exuberance around the prospects of the Indian economy? Another concern is the allocation of IPO proceeds. Hyundai’s IPO was structured as an offer for sale (OFS), meaning all funds raised would flow to the parent company rather than Hyundai India’s operations. Although Hyundai has committed to investing in R&amp;D for EVs and hybrids, critics argue that the lack of immediate reinvestment in India’s operations reflects a missed opportunity for domestic growth. And looking at the company fundamentals, it does seem like Hyundai is playing a long-term game. <h3>Hyundai in India: A proven track record</h3>Despite the initial stumble, Hyundai India’s long-term story is compelling. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai’s blockbuster SUV offerings, like the Creta and Venue, have been critical in building this dominance. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 5,496.04 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,19,986.31 crore, as compared to Rs 1,05,932.35 crore in the year-ago period. In <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24, Tata Motors said all three auto businesses delivered strong performance. The company's British arm Jaguar Land Rover had "another record-breaking quarter in Q4 FY24. Revenue for the quarter was 7.9 billion pounds, up 11 per cent versus Q4 FY23", Tata Motors said. JLR's Profit After Tax (PAT) in Q4 was 1.4 billion pounds as against a profit of 259 million pounds in the same quarter a year ago, it added. The Board of Directors have recommended a final dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share and a special dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share subject to approval by the shareholders. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2024, consolidated net profit was at Rs 31,806.75 crore as compared to Rs 2,689.87 crore in the previous fiscal, the company said. In FY24, total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 4,37,927.77 crore as compared to Rs 3,45,966.97 crore in FY23. <keyword id="20430970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors-group" source="keywords">Tata Motors Group</keyword> Chief Financial Officer, PB Balaji said in FY24 the Tata Motors Group delivered its highest-ever revenues, profits, and free cash flows. "The India business is now debt-free, and we are on track to become net automotive debt-free on a consolidated basis in FY25. The businesses are executing well on their distinct strategies and therefore, we are confident of sustaining this strong performance in the coming years," he added. JLR's revenues for FY24 were 29 billion pounds, its highest-ever full-year revenue and up 27 per cent compared to the prior year, while PAT for FY24 was 2.6 billion pounds. "We have delivered a record financial performance for the company, generating free cash flow of 2.3 billion pound, enabling us to reduce net debt to 0.7 billion pound," JLR Chief Executive Officer Adrian Mardell said. The foundation of this performance was the sustained global demand for JLR's modern luxury vehicles, led by Range Rover and Defender brands, underpinned by a consistent focus on operational improvement, he added. Tata Commercial Vehicles' Q4 FY24 revenue was at Rs 21,600 crore, while FY24 revenue was Rs 78,800 crore. In Q4 FY24, domestic wholesale commercial vehicles (CV) volumes were 1,04,600 units, lower 7 per cent year-on-year on account of increased pre-buy in Q4 FY23 due to BS6 Phase II transition, the company said. Tata Motors Ltd Executive Director Girish Wagh said the Indian CV industry grew by a modest 2 per cent in volumes during FY24, impacted by a high base effect of FY23, elections held across five states and the announcement of general elections. "Our sharp focus on profitable growth resulted in the CV business recording its highest-ever revenues of Rs 78,800 crore and profits of Rs 6,100 crore in FY24. Going forward, we will intensify our efforts to grow market share, profitably and consistently, in every business segment by delivering more value to customers with innovative products, smarter services and holistic mobility solutions," he added. Tata Passenger Vehicles clocked revenue of Rs 14,400 crore in Q4 while for the full year FY24 it was at Rs 52,400 crore. In Q4, Passenger Vehicle (PV) volumes were at 1,55,600 units, up 14.8 per cent from the year-ago period, supported by new SUV facelifts and multiple power trains, the company said. "Passenger vehicle sales in India set a record in FY24 with over 4.2 million units sold, driven by SUVs (50 per cent of overall sales) and emission-friendly powertrains. Tata Motors recorded its third consecutive year of highest sales volumes with 6 per cent growth in wholesales and 10 per cent in retail sales over FY23," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said. The company sold 73,800 EVs during the year, marking a 48 per cent increase as compared to FY23 and crossed a milestone of 1.5 lakh cumulative EV production, he added. Tata Motors Q4 consolidated net profit jumps over 3-fold at ₹17,528.59 crore

<keyword id="176328" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-coffee" source="Orion">Tata Coffee</keyword> on Tuesday reported a 44.71 per cent decline in consolidated net profit during the December quarter at ₹38.40 crore. The consolidated net profit of Tata Coffee Ltd (<keyword id="150734" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tcl" source="Orion">TCL</keyword>) stood at ₹69.46 crore in the year-ago period, it said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated total income for the quarter witnessed a 19.13 per cent growth during the October-December period at ₹754.76 crore as compared to ₹633.52 crore in the corresponding period the previous year, driven by higher realisations in Eight O'Clock Coffee (EOC) and instant coffee businesses of the company. The company, a subsidiary of Tata Consumer Products formerly known as <keyword id="148911" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-global-beverages" source="Orion">Tata Global Beverages</keyword>, stated that the improved price realisations driven by superior product mix in the instant coffee business both in India and Vietnam have aided the company's quarter performance. The operating performance of EOC business was impacted during the quarter under review by higher input and other costs, which are expected to ease over coming quarters, it said. Tata Coffee's Vietnam operations continue to deliver robust sales with improved profitability driven by higher sales of premium products, it said. "The performance of our instant coffee business continues to be robust. Tata Coffee's Vietnam operations continue to be strong with a healthy order pipeline. There is, however, continuing inflationary pressure on costs and impact on instant coffee sales in some geographies. Tata Coffee consolidated Q3 net profit falls 45% to ₹38 crore

New Delhi, <keyword id="7636498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Consumer-Products" source="Orion">Tata Consumer Products</keyword> Ltd (TCPL) on Wednesday reported a 29.67 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 358.57 crore in the first quarter ended June 30 on the back of a strong growth in its domestic business. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 276.51 crore in the April-June quarter a year ago, TCPL, earlier known as Tata Global Beverages Ltd, said in a BSE filing. Its revenue from operations was up 12.45 per cent to Rs 3,741.21 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 3,326.83 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal. "Revenue from operations increased by 12 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, mainly driven by strong growth of 16 per cent in India business, 3 per cent in international business and 5 per cent in non-branded business," TCPL said in an earnings statement. The "profit before exceptional items and tax at Rs 495 crore is higher by 23 per cent reflecting strong growth in the India branded business and improved performance in international and non-branded business," it said. Total expenses of the Tata Group FMCG arm stood at Rs 3,304.36 crore, up 11.68 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal compared to the year-ago period. TCPL's total income in the June quarter was at Rs 3,798.96 crore, up 12.99 per cent. In the June quarter, TCPL's overall branded business was up 13.11 per cent to Rs 3,372.75 crore. It was at Rs 2,981.82 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. TCPL's branded businesses include tea, coffee, water and other various value-added business. Its revenue from the Indian market in the branded business was at Rs 2,477.93 crore, up 15.51 per cent. In the coffee segment, it continued the strong performance with a revenue growth of 21 per cent in the domestic market. "For the quarter, the India foods business delivered 24 per cent revenue growth and 6 per cent volume growth," the company said. Revenue from its non-branded business, which includes plantation and extraction business for tea and coffee, was at Rs 377.05 crore, up 7.2 per cent in the June quarter. Tata Starbucks -- a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Consumer Products Ltd and Starbucks Corporation -- also recorded "strong revenue growth" of 21 per cent in the June quarter. TCPL Managing Director &amp; CEO Sunil D'Souza said that during the June quarter, it saw positive results from the interventions put in place for the branded tea business, which grew volumes for the second consecutive quarter. "We continue to maintain volume growth momentum in Salt, despite the pricing actions taken earlier to manage inflation," he added. The company continued to accelerate innovation across categories with a number of new launches to expand our total addressable market. "Our growth businesses (Tata Sampann, Tata Soulfull and NourishCo ) continued their strong growth trajectory, they grew by 58 per cent this quarter and accounted for 20 per cent of the India branded business. Tata Starbucks continued to deliver a strong performance along with store expansion," he said. Shares of Tata Consumer Products Ltd on Wednesday settled at Rs 874.10 on BSE, up 0.67 per cent from the previous close.
