Garuda Aerospace enters Sri Lankan market

Garuda Aerospace drones are delivering food and medicine in flood-hit Assam

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata Group</keyword> is planning to submit a proposal to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drones in India according to a report by the Economic Times. </li><li>The $10 trillion conglomerate has already been involved in commercial tests for crop spraying, using drones. </li><li>The Tata Group has not specified an exact use cases but reportedly plans to use drone solutions for specific applications across its many businesses. </li></ul>The Tata Group is joining the drone race in India and plans to test its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The $10 trillion conglomerate plans to seek certification from India’s apex drone regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) according to a report by the <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/technology/tatas-may-soon-join-queue-for-drone-clearance-from-dgca/69949932">Economic Times</a> before the July 10 deadline. The DGCA <a href="http://dgca.nic.in/tenders/EOI-BVLOS(May2019).pdf">invited applications</a> for companies to showcase their beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drones. The Tata Group sees this as an opportunity to use drones for specific applications across its many businesses, it hasn’t revealed an exact use case. The group has interests in steel, automobiles, retail, power, technology, consumer electronics to name a few. In the past, the Tata Group had commercially tested crop spraying drones. Though the technology is ready, it was awaiting clarity from DGCA to start using it. Tata’s not alone The Tata Group is not the only player to respond the DGCA’s call for BVLOS drones. Delhivery, Zomato, Swiggy, Zipline, ShopX are also looking to certified by the agency to use drones for their services. Zipline, a Silicon Valley company, is also looking to expand its medical delivery drone solutions to India. It already conducts around 500 deliveries in Ghana and Rwanda. RedWing, another medical delivery drone service, has also submitted its application. The company has previously partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to make its services available in Papua New Guinea. More rural than urban Experts who spoke to the Economic Times speculate that regulators are more likely to permit drone flights in rural areas before introducing drones in dense urban settings. They also ascertain that drone application in rural areas can also help the Indian government reduce costs and monitor progress of ongoing infrastructure projects. The Tata Group did not respond to Business Insider India seeking a comment on these developments. Underpasses are submerged, potholes turn into mines that cars have to navigate through; and lack of drainage systems turns roads into swimming pools. This year, the <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/delhi-high-court-suggests-use-of-drones-to-identify-water-logging-sites-in-city-during-monsoon-2231843.html">Delhi High Court</a> suggested that the city rope drones to identify and keep an eye on the areas in the city that are vulnerable to excessive water collection. This will help take care of traffic congestion as well as water logging, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/drone-cams-to-help-wr-stay-on-track-during-rains/articleshow/69299444.cms">The Western Railways</a> in Mumbai too has learnt lessons from last year. It has already contracted drones to keep an eye on the Virar-Nalasopara area, which is prone to water logging. Technology vs the monsoon Drones are already used to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mumbai-must-brace-for-floods-this-week-says-a-private-weather-forecaster/articleshow/70029004.cms">predict</a> weather patterns and rainfall. But, this is the first time that the governments are using drones for traffic surveillance and keep a check on water logging. In Delhi, the two-judge bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Jyoti Singh said, "We have no hesitation in saying that all the departments would cooperate with each other to ensure that citizens are not inconvenienced during the coming monsoon." The contractors selected by the government will deploy drones with cameras to areas that are known to be vulnerable, and send images back to the data collection point. The operators at the data centers will then decide whether or not there is a risk of water logging at the moment and plan the next action. Before deploying any drones, the police has to approve the use of air space. So far, the Western Railways has only gotten permission for the Virar-Nalasopara area even though other stretches like Frant Road, Prabhadevi, Dadar and Bandra-Khar are also flood prone areas. Too much water or not enough In Delhi, the monsoon is a double-edged sword. There’s waterlogging, on the one hand, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/every-household-in-india-will-get-water-supply-by-2024-under-the-jal-jeevan-mission-says-nirmala-sitharaman/articleshow/70086396.cms">shortage of water</a>, on the other. The Delhi High Court has suggested that the city use the opportunity of monsoons to harvest water in water clogged areas, to hit two birds with one stone. The Indian Court took up the issue of water logging on its own, to point out how the resulting traffic congestion leads to loss of time. Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Tata group and other top stocks to watch out for on September 16

Boosted by its consumer-facing businesses like organised retail and telecom, Reliance Industries ended state-owned <keyword id="6356834" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-oil-corporation">Indian Oil Corporation</keyword>'s (IOC) 10-year reign as India's largest company, topping the <keyword id="2941844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortune-India-500">Fortune India 500</keyword> list. With a revenue of Rs 5.81 lakh crore in 2018-19, the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate also became the first privately-held and the only other company to become India's largest corporation apart from IOC for the first time in 10 years, Fortune India said. State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was ranked third, same as in 2018. It was followed by State Bank of India, Tata Motors and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) -- all with no changes in their ranking between 2018 and 2019.
 The list does not take into account subsidiaries of companies and so ONGC's ranking does not reflect those from its recently acquired <keyword id="6374014" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-petroleum">Hindustan Petroleum</keyword> Corp Ltd (HPCL) as well as ONGC Videsh Ltd. Rajesh Exports climbed one position to be ranked 7th on the 2019 list and so did <keyword id="6357147" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-steel">Tata Steel</keyword>, Coal India, Tata Consultancy Services and Larsen &amp; Toubro that were ranked 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, respectively. ICICI Bank rose two positions to be ranked 12th, followed by Hindalco Industries and <keyword id="6357149" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword>. Vedanta Ltd slipped three positions to be ranked 18th on the 2019 list.
 Fortune India said RIL posted a 41.5 per cent rise in its revenue in the financial year 2018-19, which was 8.4 per cent more than IOC, the second-largest company on the list.
 RIL's 2018-19 revenue stood at Rs 5.81 lakh crore, while IOC posted a growth of 26.6 per cent in sales to Rs 5.36 lakh crore in the same year. RIL's profit for 2018-19 was also more than double that of IOC, at Rs 39,588 crore.
 "Over the past 10 years, the oil-to-retail conglomerate's profit has been an average three times higher than that of IOC. The highest it touched compared to IOC was up to 4.8 times, in FY15 when RIL's profit was Rs 23,566 crore and the public sector major's stood at Rs 4,912 crore," it said.
 Overall, the revenue of the Fortune India 500 companies in the 2019 list grew 9.53 per cent, while profit rose 11.8 per cent.
 A total of 57 companies dropped off the list for reasons including consolidation within the public sector banks, public sector undertakings, as well as the private sector.
 This year, the total loss posted by the 500 companies also came down, with 65 companies posting a cumulative loss of Rs 1.67 lakh crore, compared to last year's Rs 2 lakh crore racked up by 79 companies, Fortune India said.
 Public and private sector banks faced diverse fortunes in 2019. As many as 14 of 22 public sector banks reported cumulative losses of Rs 74,253 crore. In contrast, just two private sector banks posted losses (IDFC First Bank, at Rs 1,907.9 crore; and Lakshmi Vilas Bank, at Rs 894.1 crore). The total profit of 24 of private sector banks (including foreign banks and cooperative banks) was Rs 60,747 crore, a 6.16 per cent increase over 2017-18.
 Fortune India said the oil and gas sector (with eight companies) accounted for 22.3 per cent of the total revenue of the 500 companies, followed by banking with 15.88 per cent of the total.
 The banking sector, with 48 companies, is also the biggest contributor by way of the number of companies on the list. Oil and gas, however, has the highest share of profit in the 500, at 23.44 per cent. <ul><li>Nifty IT Index is up 1.1% in early trade on July 29, right after <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword> declared its earnings.</li><li><keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword> and <keyword id="43217" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> ranked among the top five gainers on the Nifty 50, the benchmark index.</li><li>The Nasdaq-listed Cognizant increased its growth guidance to 10.2%-11.2% citing demand in the digital services segment.</li></ul>Shares of the information technology companies rose today as Cognizant reported a strong June quarter with an increase in growth guidance for 2021. The company posted a revenue growth of $4.6 billion which grew 14% year-on-year. Also, it increased growth guidance to 10.2%-11.2% due to improved demand in the digital services segment. And that has got the entire sector excited. The global IT firm beat expectations with June quarter strong performance as revenue was $125 million more than the high-end of the company’s guidance range. However, the company’s attrition rate is at 31%, the highest among peers, compared to 21% in the previous quarter. This led the company to hire more than 3 lakh employees.
