With their rather bright red colours, those things are unmissable, after all. But if you’ve been fighting temptation because of how unhealthy they could be, we have some good news for you. Making kebabs the teensiest bit healthier, the Karnataka government is putting a ban on artificial colours in your favourite kebabs, be they vegetarian, chicken, or fish. This move comes after a series of actions by the <keyword id="19987876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-Health-Department" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Karnataka Health Department" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Karnataka Health Department">Karnataka Health Department</keyword> to ensure <keyword id="20000858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-safety" source="keywords">food safety</keyword> and protect <keyword id="19913584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health" source="keywords">public health</keyword>. This is "Food Wars."Joe Avella: Over the past season and a half of "Food Wars," we've found some interesting, dare I say shocking chemicals in some of the foods and food processes. Harry: We've created this compilation of these moments, and Joe and I are going to react to them now. Sure, we may not be food scientists, food experts, scientists, or really anything, but we do have these fancy lab coats, which I think gives us some credibility. Joe: I got mine at Party City! Harry: Fantastic! Let's dive in.Joe: You know, the only difference is that our pepperoni contains beef. Also preservatives beutohydrolatehydrolazinase and beautohadalidblahbityblah. BHA and BHT. I can't pronounce them. They're bad. Harry: It turns out that BHA and BHT are actually subject to restrictions in the European Union and can't be added to foods such as pepperoni. This might be because studies have shown that BHA can cause tumors in rats and it's therefore reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen in humans. Joe: You have no idea how much we spent on those dancing rats. I mean, what doesn't cause tumors in rats, right? I feel like rats are always getting cancer anyway. And they don't say the portions. Are they eating human-size portions of BHA and BHT? Then, yeah, of course they're getting cancer. Oh, well. I'm gonna die doing what I love. Eating banned chemicals. Put it in my obituary! Harry: We reached out to Domino's to get some clarity on the pepperoni situation. We got our info from their ingredients webpage. However, when we checked with them, they told us that their information was incorrect and they've updated it since to say that BHA and BHT have now been removed from the pepperoni. I think this happened at some point during 2018, they couldn't say exactly when, but, Joe, it sounds like you're OK after all. Joe: Gotta say, my hair game is pretty strong in this one. I know it has nothing to do with chemicals, but my stuff was just [clicks tongue]. My hair's locked in on this one, buddy. Harry: I loved BHA and BHT because this was kind of the first episode of "Food Wars" where we found a chemical that actually was kind of banned and very dangerous and didn't appear in the UK. I'm gonna be straight up. The European Union sounds kind of like a buzzkill, right? Is that what Brexit was all about? "We want BHA and BHT in our food. We're outta here."Joe: And in the US, our doughnut is made up of enriched wheat flour, [fast-forward noise] and BHT. Ah, yes! Our old friend BHT, aka butylated hydroxytoluene? It is banned in the European Union. The International Agency for Research on Cancer suggests -- might I say strongly suggests -- "there is sufficient evidence" that BHT causes tumor growth in lab animals. I'll tell you straight up, those doughnuts could be made of dead cancer rats, I'd still eat them. They're that good. Who cares what's in these doughnuts? Also, according to WebMD, BHT is also used to treat genital herpes. That's right. I want you to think about that every time you bite into a Krispy Kreme. Genital herpes. And every time you get genital herpes, I want you to think of Krispy Kreme. I want those two things together in your mind for the rest of your life. You are welcome.Joe: Tricalcium phosphate, diammonium phosphate. That last guy, diammonium phosphate, aka DAP. Not the sequel to "WAP." What does that stand for? It is also used as a fertilizer and as a fire retardant. So, when we have the next wildfire outbreaks in this state, 'cause it definitely will happen, we're gonna start dropping Krispy Kremes on those wildfires. Problem solved! One thing we need to note about the US Taco Bell menu is that items like the Baja Blast and the Doritos Tacos Locos, I think the shells have an ingredient called Yellow No. 5. Yellow No. 5 is not in the UK. Of course it's in the US. In the UK, you usually find Yellow 5 referred to as tartrazine. It's on a list of six chemicals which, when added to food, must contain the following warning: "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children." Harry: Tartrazine is a fascinating one because it's in so many places in America and basically nowhere here. But, honestly, like, in things like the Baja Blast, I don't think that's what's causing the hyperactivity. I think it's the million tons of sugar that they add. Joe: As a medical professional, you're not going to Taco Bell because you were concerned about what's going in your body, you're going to Taco Bell 'cause you don't care what's going in or out of your body, apparently. In some cases, it causes itching and hives in people who eat it. Disgusting. [laughs] Itching and hives? Yep! That's fine. I feel most people who eat that food already had itching and hive issues anyway, so if it's not coming from the Taco Bell, it's coming from, I don't know, sleeping on unwashed bedsheets. Hey, I ate it growing up, and I'm perfectly fine. I should note that I have a full head of gray hair and I just turned 23. What's up?Harry: There are a few things to watch out for on the menu at Five Guys. Yeah, like the hot dogs. Harry: For example, the pickles in the US. In the US, the pickles contain a food coloring called Yellow 5, or tartrazine. If this is added to foods in the European Union - My hair looks stupid in the Five Guys episode. Why did nobody warn me?Harry: There is one thing to look out for on the menu. If you're in the US and you get a salad, the croutons contain azodicarbonamide, or ADA. This is a substance that's usually used to make vinyl foam plastics, which form things like yoga mats. It's actually been banned from use in food in the UK since the 1990s. Joe: So, this is my comment on the yoga-mat thing. It's always something. Even when we're trying to be healthy, our salad has yoga-mat plastic in it. It's ridiculous. Like, why do our croutons have plastic in them? Just get regular croutons without plastic. It doesn't make any sense. Oh, my God, I want Pizza Hut so bad right now. I know it's weird to stick up for a chemical, but I want to point out that to my understanding - again, I've done no research on this - it's not like they're making the yoga mats and then taking the chemicals out of the yoga mats. If you imagine the chemical, like, one truckload goes to the yoga-mat factory, and the other truckload goes to Pizza Hut. I'm assuming, right? Or are they recycling yoga mats? If they're doing that, then never mind. That's really gross.Joe: The only ingredient in the US Chipotle that gave me a bit of pause was something called gypsum. Gypsum's also known as calcium sulfate hydrate. Right? OK. And Chipotle uses that in their tofu process when they separate the chunks from the liquid. Gypsum is also found in drywall, chalk, and shampoo. Of course it is. Now, does the gypsum stay in the tofu or is it just used for the separating purposes? I don't care. I'm never getting tofu from Chipotle. Don't worry about gypsum. It's fine. You know how they have those billboards for -- Yeah, yeah yeah yeah! Like, just this. And then next to it is: "Gypsum. Don't worry about it. You're fine." [laughs]Harry: One piece of information you can get from the UK's FAQ page is that the plant-based Great Imitator wrap might not actually be as plant-based as it seems. The baste and the tortilla wrap used both contain shellac. Now, shellac is also sometimes called confectioner's glaze, and it's a natural polymer that's used to give things a waxy finish and to trap in moisture. Harry: Love the shirt I wore in the Nando's episode. What's your favorite Harry shirt so far? Leave a comment below. Harry: But where does shellac actually come from? Well, it's actually secreted by female lac beetles onto trees in India and Thailand. This means it's technically an animal product, and although it can be gathered without harming the beetles, this is hard to achieve in practice. Not nice. Shellac was one which popped out to me when I was reading the ingredients list just because the usual context I've heard it in is, like, gel nails. So as soon as I kind of knew that that wasn't that, I wanted to do some more research into it. And it turns out it's a beetle thing. Who knew?Harry: However, after combing through their ingredients list in the UK and the US, we did find one or two things to look out for. For example, caramel color. It's used in a range of Pret products, from the dressing that they put on their salads to the caramel syrups, which they put into their drinks. Irene: Well, in the US, you'll find caramel color in the salted caramel hot chocolate and the salted caramel latte, which I drink. Harry: Caramel color is worth pointing out because it's on the state of California's Proposition 65 list of chemicals which are known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. Irene: Ooh, reproductive toxicity. That's fun. Um. [laughs] See, I was scared, but the good news is there's only two types of caramel color, classes III and IV, that contained the chemical that's to blame for this, 4-MEL. The bad news is that class IV caramel color does appear on the menu in the UK. While there is some evidence to suggest that the amounts currently in our food are pretty safe, the state of California banning it isn't a great look. Meanwhile, at a federal level, the FDA still says that there is "no reason to believe that there are any immediate or short-term health risks presented by 4-MEI at the levels expected in food." So, kind of up to you. Harry: Whenever we reach out to someone about something like caramel color, the answer tends to be along the lines of, "Well, you know, at its current level, it's fine." Then surely if there's something which has a dangerous level, then just get rid of it altogether. It can't make that much of a difference. Come on, guys.Harry: The one other thing worth pointing out is the difference between the wraps used in the two countries. There's only one wrap used in the UK, and it's this one, the kibbled rye wrap. Here's the ingredients list. Irene: We also have kibbled rye wraps in the US, and the ingredients list is virtually identical, but we can also get a plain tortilla wrap as part of the falafel and red peppers and Pret's chicken Parm wraps. The ingredients list for this wrap is a little more alarming. There's three different gums in here, but it's actually the fumaric acid you may want to watch out for. It's an acidity regulator that's pretty common in tortillas, but the European Union says that while it's practically nontoxic, long-term exposure is probably toxic to your kidneys due to the results of studies carried out on calves and rats. Joe: Nice nonanswer. Like, "We're not saying it's not, but we're also not saying that it is." Long-term effect, kidney damage? I'm not worried about it. Again, Dr. Joe says, "It's probably fine." And then, on that billboard, I have a cigarette in my mouth. [producer laughing]Harry: What we can get is a list of allergens. And it has a couple of fun things to note. For example, there is a significant risk of there being traces of seafood in our banoffee concrete. Joe: Did he say banana? Banoffee. I'd be more worried about that. What the hell's a banoffee? Harry: And there are also sulfites in our chicken bites and in the ShackSauce. Joe: We may or may not also have shellfish in our 'Shroom burger, ShackBurger, Shack Stack, and SmokeShack. So, there's no potential seafood in the UK equivalents of these burgers, so I have no idea why there might be shellfish in ours here in the US. I couldn't even guess why. Harry: Still not been explained to me why there is a significant risk that there could be seafood in a milkshake, because obviously that is not something that goes together. I do not want a shrimpy milkshake. No, thank you.Harry: While we might not have an ingredients list for our bread, we do know that it's likely to not be perfect. For example, an Irish court recently declared that Subway cannot call its loaves bread due to the high sugar content. Subway uses more than 10% sugar in their flour. Joe: How about they can't call their sandwiches sandwiches? 'Cause they're too gross. The high-percentage amount of their food tasting bad is the reason it cannot be called sandwiches or edible food. Harry: So, I actually reached out to Subway about their bread issue, and we did get a response from them. The official Subway line on this is: "Subway's bread is of course bread. We've been baking fresh bread in our stores for more than three decades, and our guests return each day for sandwiches made on bread that smells as good as it tastes." So, they're sticking with their guns. Ireland disagrees. Whose side are you on?Harry: It's worth pointing out one other FAQ from the UK page, which is that the UK Nando's have explicitly committed to never using chlorinated chicken from America. Chlorinated chicken's been in the headlines a lot recently because it's kind of become the face of differing food standards between the UK and the US. It refers to the process of giving slaughtered chickens a chemical wash before they're packaged and sent to consumers. Medha: What do you guys have against our chlorinated chicken? JK. Joking. You're gonna see. Oh, there's so many things against our chlorinated chicken. This is done to kill harmful bacteria like salmonella. Even the European Union admits that it's unlikely to pose any health risk to consumers. But campaigners say that it also allows farmers to cover up lower production standards throughout the chicken-rearing process. The good news is that it's estimated only 10% of US chicken actually gets treated with chlorine. So it's not a guarantee that Nando's chicken in the US will have been through the process. But it's an interesting example of the different food standards in the UK and the US. Joe: I'm perfectly fine with that. Right? I'm perfectly fine with that. Yeah, clean the raw chicken. I mean, what would you rather have, salmonella? Get outta here. Like, it's fine. I have never gotten salmonella. From what I hear, it's pretty awful. Trust me. I am a diarrhea expert, and it sounds unbearable. Give me a chlorinated dipping sauce with those chicken tenders. I'm perfectly fine with that. I am not fine with risking salmonella. It's fine. These come as a single tube, as a box of 12, or, around the holidays, we can get a Pringles Christmas cracker, which comes with four 40-gram tubes.Joe: In the US, the smallest portion of Pringles you can get is this, a snack stack.Harry: This 19-gram snack stack comes in units of 12, 18, this is super weird, 27, and [grunts] 48 snack stacks.Joe: Our next size is a 70-gram tube. We also have Pringles in this grab-and-go size, which is 2.5 ounces, or 71 grams. You can get them in single, obviously, or in packs of 15. This isn't even the biggest grab-and-go size, apparently. They have a size that's even bigger, that's 74 grams, or 2.5 ounces. Uh, I ate that on the way here. I'm sorry.Harry: And then from there we go to a full-sized tube, which is 200 grams. All flavors weigh the same amount in the UK. In the US, our regular tubes are actually small.Joe: You get about 5.5 ounces per tube, but the flavor actually adds to the weight.<h3>Nutrition</h3>Here's an original Pringles, and this is only 5.2 ounces. That means our Pringles have slightly more fat than the US version, but almost half the saturated fat.Joe: In the US, a majority of the Pringle flavors have the same number of calories as the original flavor, but there are some changes to some of the other numbers when you branch out.Harry: Our saltiest Pringle is actually the salt and vinegar. 100 grams of UK salt and vinegar is 40% of your daily allowance of sodium.Joe: The saltiest Pringles in the US are the Buffalo ranch. 100 grams of them contain 999.6 milligrams of sodium.Avoid! Avoid! What in the good God?! Oh, man! I can't believe the flavor in these things. I gotta try that again. Oh, my God. These are so disgusting. This might be the worst thing I've tasted on this show. All the salt for all the Buffalo ranch in the factory got condensed into one container on accident, and we bought it. This is so gross.Harry: In the UK, original Pringles contain the following: dehydrated potatoes, vegetable oils , rice flour, wheat starch, corn flour, emulsifier , maltodextrin, salt, yeast extract, yeast powder, and color .Joe: Original Pringles in the US contain dried potatoes; vegetable oil, which is corn, cottonseed, high oleic soybean oil and/or sunflower oil; degerminated yellow corn flour; cornstarch; rice flour; maltodextrin; mono- and diglycerides; salt; and wheat starch.Harry: These are actually very similar. The E471 in the UK is actually the same as the mono- and diglycerides used in the US, just used by a different name.Joe: The only other notable changes are the yeast used in the UK and the fact that the UK colors its Pringles with annatto, an orange-red <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> color. But how much different is the color? OK.Harry: The longest ingredient list for a classic Pringles flavor in the UK is prawn cocktail. It contains 28 main ingredients, likely with a lot more because some of them aren't fully disclosed, like the flavorings and the spices.Joe: Now, from what I can tell, the longest ingredients list for a classic US flavor is the cheddar and sour cream. They contain 32 main ingredients. Along with a bunch of subingredients, takes the total to 40. I'm not reading this out loud. On that list you'll see, of course, a couple of ingredients that you won't find in the UK Pringles, namely Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6. I'm wearing Yellow No. 7. It's always with the yellow stuff.Harry: These are also referred to as tartrazine and Sunset Yellow. They were two chemicals highlighted by a study back in 2007 into links between hyperactivity and food additives. The initial results suggested that there was indeed a link between these chemicals and hyperactivity. However, since then, the European Food Safety Authority has backtracked and said that might not be the case.Joe: Also in that study was Red 40, aka Allura Red, which appears in the ingredients list for the Memphis barbecue Pringles and these, the pizza Pringles.Harry: Foods using these chemicals in the UK must still bear a warning to say that they "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children," which means that most manufacturers will just avoid using them.Joe: Wait, has he always been bald? Yeah, he's bald. Thought he had hair. No, you're thinking of the guy from the Monopoly thing. No, wait, look! Yeah! Hair. What the hell? Hair and no hair. Julius Pringle! What's going on, dude? Is this weird? This is weird, right? Hairgate 2021. Why does he have hair in some and not on the other ones?Harry: Here are all the Pringles you'll find in the UK, but not the US.Joe: These are most of the US-exclusive Pringles. Cheddar and sour cream, jalapeño, pizza, honey mustard, which sounds weird.Ugh. No, no, no. Oh, those taste like a mistake. Someone screwed up on those. That might be the worst one. The Buffalo one was just too salty, but that is the worst flavor. I mean, this stuff is made for 13-year-old gamers. This is just made to sit and consume while you're staring at a flashing screen. Stimulus, stimulus, stimulus. Like, I'm in awe of how intense these are. [grunts]Harry: Hey, Joe, can I try one of those ranch Pringles? It's quite, quite splintered. Didn't survive the journey. I like that. That's a good Pringle. Need to get these over here.Joe: Oh, God. Buff - was it Buffalo ranch? Yeah, I'm not eating these. I'll skip those. Hey, it's the Screamin' Dill Pickle! Arr! What is going, what is going on on this label? Chip is wearing goggles and a snorkel? It would have been better if the chip was just like [yells] You know when you go and get a burger and the fries and they put that wedge of pickle on the side and the pickle's touching some of the fries and then those fries taste like pickles? This is a whole flavor of that. Who wants that?Harry: Over here we've got prawn cocktail. Now, this is really popular in the UK. For those who aren't familiar with prawn cocktail, there is no prawn in here. What this is, is the sauce that you would normally serve with a prawn cocktail. It's just a kind of tangy, tomatoey Pringle. And, personally, I'm a big fan. Then we're moving on to this one, which is paprika flavor.In this menacing-looking black, fiery can, we have hot and spicy Pringles, but they're basically just Pringles flavored with some jalapeño extract along with some other peppers as well. They don't smell too spicy. Cheers. I'm getting, like, a little bit of garlic, little bit of tomato. Not getting any heat though. People insist on calling things hot and spicy and then make things that really aren't that hot and spicy.Next up we've got smokey bacon Pringles. Personally, I love these, but I will say if you eat one they stay on your breath for about two weeks, regardless of how many times you brush your teeth. Then we've got some peri-peri Pringles.Now, if you've seen the Nando's episode, you'll know that, as a country, the UK is obsessed with peri-peri chicken, and Pringles have capitalized on that with some peri-peri-chicken-flavored Pringles.According to the UK Pringles website, you should also be able to get steak Pringles and Thai sweet chili Pringles. But none of the supermarkets that I visited actually had any.Joe: Now, in both the US and the UK, you can get spicier Pringles. In the US, they are called Scorchin'. How hot could these possibly be? Scorchin' chili lime. Not that hot. Actually - yeah, no.Harry: Instead of Scorchin', our spicy Pringle range is actually called Sizzl'n. Sizzl'n. It's fun to say. And it comes in a Kickin' Sour Cream exclusive or as an extra-hot cheese and chili exclusive, which unfortunately we weren't able to find today. It's sizzle time. Sizzl'n sour cream is a strange one, because sour cream is the thing you're supposed to use to, like, cool the heat down. Definitely attack your tongue a bit more than the hot and spicy ones did. Still not, like, mind-blowingly hot.Joe: Also in the US we got these wavy Pringles, which look like they're just straight ripping off Ruffles. Classic salted, applewood-smoked cheddar, fire-roasted jalapeño, sweet and spicy barbecue, and something to do with the video game high-low -- [sighs] "high-low." It's something to do with the video game Halo, MOA Burger. All this is for children. This is all for children.Harry: We might not have wavy Pringles, but we do have rice fusion Pringles. These are Pringles which are made with rice and inspired by Asian flavors. Indian tandoori chicken masala flavor and a Japanese katsu curry flavor. We're supposed to also be able to get Malaysian red curry flavor, a Peking duck and hoisin sauce flavor, and a barbecue teriyaki flavor.Joe: The last exclusive Pringles I want to talk about are the original lightly salted. Yeah. Perfect. This is how potato chips should taste like. Yeah. Unfortunately, Pringles lightly salted equals normal everywhere else.It's so bizarre. It's like hair and no hair. This is "<keyword id="9221472" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="food-wars">Food Wars</keyword>."Harry: In the UK, you can get your order in three portion sizes. As a small platter, as a regular platter, or as a sandwich. Joe: The Halal Guys in the US, your order can come in three sizes: small, regular, sandwich. Harry: We're going to weigh a regular platter in both countries to see whose is the biggest. [beep] It's been so many episodes. Why don't we just get bigger scales? Bear with us one second. [elevator music plays] First half is about 337 grams. 337 plus 321, six five eight? Quick maths. Joe: This thing, we need to wash this thing. It's getting funky in here. Here we go, the regular. Whoa, fits in perfectly. 640. 640 grams. That's a full meal. Oh, man, this smells so good. Harry: Fries in the UK only come in one portion size, this one. Joe: In the US, The Halal Guys also only have one size fries. Look at this case. Have you seen this? Do you think it's to keep them crispy, so they don't get soggy? Very smart. Very innovative. I want to eat this so badly. We gotta weigh it first. Harry: This could be another brick. [fries plop onto scale] Ayy. So, a side of fries from a UK Halal Guys came to 213 grams. Joe: Wait. Oh, yeah, OK. Yeah. 145 grams for one size of Halal Guys fries. Oh, yeah. Yo. I've never gotten the fries. These are good! Crispy. Don't sleep on the Halal Guys fries. Harry: In the UK, a side of hummus only comes in one size, and it's this one right here. Joe: In the US of A, Halal Guys hummus only comes in one size, and, of course, we are going to weigh it. Harry: So, our side order of hummus came in at 246 grams. I'm going to eat all of this as soon as the cameras stop rolling. A side order of baba ghanoush in the UK only comes in one size as well. Joe: In the US, the baba ghanoush at The Halal Guys is also just one size. Harry: In the UK, you can get a side of falafel, and it comes as a two-piece serving. We did ask for some, but I think the guy forgot, so we don't have any to show you. Joe: In the US at The Halal Guys, you can get your falafel in three sizes: two pieces, four pieces, or six pieces. Harry: We can also get falafel sandwiches. Let's take some measurements. Our falafel sandwich is 8 inches in diameter. And for the moment you've all been waiting for, we're going to measure the girth. The tape measurer is really not fit to task. Actually, that's going to work. And our falafel sandwich has a girth of, let's say, 7-and-a-bit inches. Joe: From pita to pita, 8 inches? Yeah? Oh, look at that! And it's 8 inches thick. 8 and 8. I like when things are just precise like that. Harry: And, finally, it weighs 286 grams. Joe: And a falafel sandwich at the US Halal Guys ♪ weighs ♪ like, exactly -- [burps] Excuse me. Exactly 250 grams. Harry: In the UK, if you want dessert at Halal Guys, you can get baklava. It comes in a two-piece serving. Joe: Halal Guys in the US, the baklava comes in one size, in this one piece. This piece right here. Oops, I ordered two! I guess I'll just have to eat one. Who am I kidding? I'm eating both of these.Harry: Unfortunately, Halal Guys doesn't make its nutritional information available for its UK products. We did find some in the store, and, luckily, I took a picture. From this, we now know that the sandwiches range anywhere from 419 calories to 694 calories, and the platters range anywhere from 471 calories to 1,049 calories. It's fairly safe to assume that the 1,049-calorie platter is probably one of the meat ones with all of the sides, all of the sauces, pretty much everything you can get. 1,049 calories will take you to just over half of your normal daily allowance. Joe: The combo platter is said to be Halal Guys' most popular menu item. This is a regular combo platter before any white or red sauce has been added. I would recommend not eating it until it is added. That's just me. Our regular combo platter is 794 calories, 23 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat, 1,998 milligrams of sodium, which I believe is 86% of your daily intake, and also 96 grams of carbs. Of course we're adding white and red sauces, right? OK. The white sauce pouch. One of these is roughly 330 calories, 37 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, 420 milligrams of sodium. 420. [bell dings] And 2 grams of carbs. See this guy right here? Each package of their hot sauce adds only 7 calories, but 89 milligrams of sodium. Harry: Let's talk about the red sauce. Now, according to the Halal Guys website, their red sauce ranges from between 100,000 to 130,000 on the Scoville scale. To put that in perspective, sriracha is somewhere around 2,500 on the same scale, and the infamous "Hot Ones" Da Bomb sauce is around 135,000. So pretty close to this.Joe: Halal Guys has something called the Hot Sauce Challenge. What it is, is a small platter with 20 lines of their hot sauce, and you've got to be able to eat the whole thing in 10 minutes with no assistance of any beverages, not only during while you're eating it, but also five minutes after. Harry: Sorry, what are we doing? Joe: So, one, two - Harry: It's times like this where you're like, "I should have a will written, just in case." That's four. Oh, my God. If I don't make it out of this, someone tell my cat that I love him. 20. I'll just put this whole thing in there. [laughs] This is such a bad idea. Producer: You ready? Joe: Yeah. Producer: Set, go. Joe: All right. [ominous music plays] Whoa. Yo! [coughs] Oh, my God. This stuff is really hot. Oh, man. I'm getting a metallic taste in my mouth, like my mouth might be bleeding. Harry: [laughs] [coughs] OK. Yep, that's immediately spicy. No slow burn here. Joe: Oh, God. This was a mistake. [coughs] It's, like, really good, dude. Harry: Oh, God. More. Joe: How long's it been? [cry-laughs] OK, OK. I think I can manage this. Harry: [laughs] My eyes are watering. The throat is hurting. [clears throat] Joe: This is really hot. My tongue, back of the mouth, everything. [pounding] Harry: No way I'm lasting five minutes. I'm breaking early. God. [steam hisses] I'm throwing in the towel. I can't do it. Producer: Yeah? Joe: Yeah. Holy s---. How long was that? Producer: Three minutes and 10 seconds. Harry: See, Nando's? That is spice. If you advertise something as spicy, at least deliver. And that's what Halal Guys have done. [production crew laughing] Whew! Joe: People who build up tolerance in their mouth for spice, they also have the tolerance for it going out. Because the worst thing about spicy food for me is -- the second worst is eating it. The first worst is -- it'll be about in five hours. Speaking of which. It would have been smarter to do this at the end of the shoot. Now, if you were to go with the falafel sandwich in the US, it would be 641 calories, 26 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 1,259 milligrams of sodium, and 82 grams of carbs. [pants]Harry: Currently, Halal Guys don't provide that much information when it comes to the ingredients of their meats and rices. What we do know, as you can imagine, is that Halal Guys' food is, indeed, halal certified. Joe: The Halal Guys chicken recipe is a secret. So we assume, similar to other Middle Eastern street meats, it is marinated in herbs, lemon, olive oil, salt, and pepper. I got all of this info from the Halal Guys "Legendary Eats" story we did about a year ago, so thank you to those producers for doing my homework. Harry: The beef is also a secret recipe, but from what we know, it's likely to be flavored with things like salt, pepper, oregano, and paprika. Joe: But The Halal Guys can't be tight-lipped on their sauces now that they're available for retail. So the hot sauce in the US, and assuming the UK, ingredients are ground red pepper, vinegar, salt, various spices, question mark, question mark, question mark? And concentrated lemon juice. White sauce: soybean oil, water, egg yolk, distilled vinegar, less than 2% of salt, sugar, spices, natural flavors, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, and calcium disodium EDTA, or "ed-ta," to maintain freshness. Contains eggs. Harry: According to the white sauce packets, it contains soybean oil, water, egg, spirit vinegar, salt, sugar, pepper, preservative potassium sorbate, thickener xanthan gum, mustard, antioxidant calcium disodium EDTA, and natural flavoring. Joe: For the Halal Guys pita bread, I had to do some deep investigative journalism. Specifically, I called The Halal Guys in downtown LA, and they told me that the pitas they use are these: Kontos <keyword id="1937089" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="gyro">Gyro</keyword> Bread Pre-Oiled. Is this the pita breads they use for all Halal Guys? I called and emailed Kontos, and they did not get back to me. Guys, what's the story? So I'm gonna assume that they do. So this pita contains unbleached, unbrom, bromated, no. Unbleached, unbromated, enriched flour, niacin , thiamine , reduced iron, riboflavin , folic acid, water, and soybean oil, and contains 2% or less of the following ingredients: calcium propionate , corn syrup solids. OK. Fumaric acid, guar gum, salt, sesame flour, sodium bicarbonate, sorbic acid , soy flour, sugar, vegetable mono- and diglycerides, vegetable L-cysteine, wheat enzymes, whole-wheat flour, and yeast. Harry: One thing to look out for there is the fumaric acid that they use. While this is practically nontoxic because the amounts in our food are very small, the European Union does say that in high doses, this can be nephrotoxic, which is toxic to your kidneys. So you might want to go easy on the pitas. One thing we found out just by purchasing the product is that the baklava in the UK actually contains some questionable food colorings. The first is Blue 1, also known as Brilliant Blue. This is kind of hard to come by in the UK, as it's just fallen out of favor thanks to the Smarties controversy. Blue 1 used to be the blue coloring used in Smarties in the UK. However, it was removed after there was a panic about it potentially causing hyperactivity in children. It famously took Smarties years to come up with a natural replacement for the blue coloring. They finally settled on spirulina, which is made from seaweed. On a not unrelated note, there's also Yellow 5 in here, also known as tartrazine. Yellow 5 is one of the chemicals highlighted by a 2007 study investigating links between food colorings and hyperactivity in children. The initial results did seem to show a link between the two; however, since then, people have backtracked and said that further study may be required. Despite that, foods containing these chemicals in the European Union must still bear a warning that they may have an adverse effect on attention in children. We don't see a warning on this box, so Halal Guys, you might want to update your packaging. [baklava crunches]Harry: Here is everything you will only find on the menu at a UK Halal Guys. Joe: Here are the exclusives you can get in the USA. Harry: Yeah, believe it or not, this is probably our shortest exclusive section ever. All the things you can only find on the menu in the UK are an orange Fanta or a lemon Fanta. I'm assuming you guys do have Fanta in the US, but for me, obviously, Fanta orange is the classic. However, Fanta lemon, absolutely amazing. For some reason it's not super common in the UK, but if you go into mainland Europe, particularly slightly hotter places like Spain or Greece, this is kind of everywhere. So for me, it just brings back memories of, like, being on a beach bar with my family, sipping a Fanta lemon, having a great time. Joe: So, forgive me if I'm wrong. I didn't see this anywhere on the Halal Guys London menus. It is 16.9 fluid ounces of the white sauce. Look how big this is. This is hilarious. Ugh. Side of olives. Oh, you can also get a side of jalapeños. If the hot sauce wasn't hot enough, here you go. You can also get yourself a side of tahini. For desserts, you can also get Halal Guys cookies. Harry: That's pretty much it. I'm going to go and lie down, because hot sauce is a terrible invention. Cheers.Joe: You know why this is trouble, though? Because it still tastes really good. Taco party pack.Harry: The Classic Cravings Meal for six comes with two quesadillas, two beef Crunchwrap Supremes, two Volcano burritos, two portions of nachos BellGrande, and then six beef tacos and three portions of cinnamon twists for dessert.Joe: As you can see, it's just 12 tacos. I know that seems very simple, but sometimes, simplicity is the best. 12 tacos, you can get them either hard shell or soft shell, regular or supreme, at least half of them I know you can get as Doritos Tacos Locos. If you don't know what that is, you'll find out a little bit later here in the US.Harry: Let's take a look at some of the nutritional info for Taco Bell, starting with the basics. In the UK, a plain crunchy beef taco is 159 calories and has 308 milligrams of sodium.Joe: In the US, our crunchy beef taco is 170 calories.Harry: A chicken quesadilla in the UK is a hefty 529 calories.Joe: Our quesadilla actually has less calories. "Only" 510. But it still has more sodium. It actually has almost more than half of your daily allowance.Harry: Thud. When in the UK, a Crunchwrap has 578 calories, but shockingly, it has 60% of your daily saturated fat allowance.Joe: In the US, our hexagram is 530 calories and has about 6 grams of fat less than the one in the UK. But, surprising no one, ours has more sodium. As is always the case in the US, you have to look at the beverages. This right here is a large Mountain Dew Baja Blast. This is 30 ounces of a liquid that is the most unnatural green I've ever seen. It glows in the dark. It's so bright, when I close my eyes I can still see it, like when you look at the sun. This beverage has over 420 calories. That is ridiculous. I gotta take a sip. Oh, my God. This has roughly 110 grams of sugar. It's an absurd amount of sugar. Oh, God. It's like, it's horrible, yet I'm addicted to it. So, I wanted to see exactly what 110 grams of sugar looks like. And to do so... get out of my face. We got this and this. Come on, are you serious? I'm not even halfway there. Yeah, OK, there we go. This is in that. America, this is too much sugar. I get it. This thing, it's just.... Ah. Man! I hate that so much.Harry: Let's start with the ingredients for the basics. In the UK, a flour tortilla contains the following. Sorbic acid and/or potassium sorbate.Harry: These lists might look quite different, but actually a lot of it's just under terminology. For example, the UK menu tends to use E numbers, whereas the US menu tends to refer to things by their full chemical names.Joe: Yeah, it's a good distinction to make, Harry, but is it better? I don't know. What sounds worse, E450 or pyrophosphate? Pyrophosphate is a scary-sounding chemical. E450 sounds like a "Star Wars" droid. I don't think it really makes much of a difference, personally.Harry: What about some meat options? Well, in the UK, 72% of the beef is beef, and the rest is made up of beef fat, maltodextrin, tomato powder, paprika, cumin, black pepper, salt, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, yeast extract, oregano, cocoa powder, flavor enhancer E635, cellulose, salt, stabilizers E451 and E452.Joe: And in the United States, our beef contains beef. Imagine that. Water, seasoning, which is cellulose, chili pepper, maltodextrin, salt, oats, soy lecithin, spices, tomato powder, sugar, onion powder, citric acid, natural flavors, new set of brackets, , close them brackets, torula yeast, cocoa, disodium inosinate, and [sighs] what is this word? Guan-ya-late? Guan-ye-late. Guan-ye-late. Whatever. It looks like it's pretty much the same thing you guys got there in the UK. One thing we need to note about the US Taco Bell menu is that items like the Baja Blast and the Doritos Tacos Locos, I think the shells have an ingredient called Yellow No. 5. Yellow No. 5 is not in the UK. Of course it's in the US.Harry: In the UK, you usually find Yellow 5 referred to as tartrazine. It's on a list of six chemicals which, when added to <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword>, must contain the following warning: "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children."Joe: And according to the FDA, in some cases, it causes itching and hives in people who eat it. Disgusting. [laughs] Itching and hives, yep, that's fine. Hey, I ate it growing up, and I'm perfectly fine. I should note that I have a full head of gray hair, and I just turned 23.Harry: Here is everything you can only find on the menu at a UK Taco Bell.Joe: This is everything you could only get at a US Taco Bell.Harry: So, we only have the one exclusive taco. And it's this one, which is the crispy chicken soft taco. What it is, is pretty much just a standard taco with the lettuce, the cheese, the sour cream, but then we've kind of got one of these breaded crispy chicken fillets in the middle as well.Joe: First thing, which is right in front of me, I've talked about this twice already. It is the party pack. We've already met the Baja Blast. Oh, man, I hate it so much. One thing that I love at Taco Bell, the Doritos Locos tacos. What is it? It is a taco that the shell is a Dorito. See that? Made of the same stuff.Harry: Now, we actually have a bunch of exclusive burrito options in the UK. We'll start with this one, which is the Volcano burrito. Now, apparently this used to be on the menu in the US, but it's no longer there. What it is, is basically just, like, a beef and rice burrito. There's some sour cream cheese in there as well and some crunchy tortilla chips. And I think it gets the name Volcano because it's got the lava sauce in there, so it's quite spicy.Joe: Yes, Harry, the Volcano burrito was available in the US for a limited time. It was a promotional menu item for the 1995 box-office bomb "Congo," based on the Michael Crichton book. RIP to my boy Michael Crichton.Harry: Here, we have a beefy nacho griller, which is a fantastic name. What this is, is just beef and crushed nacho chips with some cheese sauce in a burrito. Here, we've got the double cheesy black bean burrito, which, as the name suggests, has two types of cheese. It's got the nacho cheese and also the shredded cheese in there, as well as some rice and black beans. Here, we have the seven-layer burrito. We have another exclusive crispy chicken option, which is a crispy chicken burrito. And then, finally, we have the spicy chicken griller. Not bad. It does just kind of taste like something that I could make at home.Joe: There's a bunch of burritos. I'm gonna try and figure out what these burritos are without, like, completely ripping them apart. This right here. Oh, beef Quesarito. Somehow they combined a burrito and a quesadilla, and it's this light-brown brick. If you don't want beef, you wanna go vegetarian, they also have a black bean Quesarito. This looks like five-layer burrito. I didn't know this until I had to do this video, but there's no seven-layer burrito in America anymore. They took out two layers, and I get the five-layer one. [grunts] What is this? Well, all these just look the same. Grilled cheese burrito. That sounds awesome. Who doesn't like grilled cheese? And these two that are left here, one of them is a cheesy bean and rice burrito, and the other one is a burrito supreme. That's one of these two. I don't know which is which. We also have steak quesadillas, which, unfortunately the Taco Bell that I went to did not have them. This big thing right here, I love this. Look at this. This is the nacho party pack. It's exactly what it sounds like. Get a good look, UK. This is what nachos are supposed to look like.Harry: What we lack in nachos, we more than make up for in fries. We love fries in the UK. Obviously, we call them chips. But it's very unusual to walk into a fast-food restaurant and not be able to find them, so I think Taco Bell have kind of tried to cash in on that in the UK. Basically your standard fries, but then they have a kind of fajita seasoning on them as well. You can get them in three sizes. Regular fries, then you have the fries supreme, and then finally you have the fries BellGrande, which is the biggest size. We ordered one deconstructed and one constructed just to see the difference.Joe: Mexican pizza. They were saying for a while that these were gonna be taken off the menu. We still got them in a couple locations, apparently. I got my hands on one. Look at this guy. Oh, this right here, the power bowl, the protein bowl. This is actually a really good idea for them. It's just all protein, no carbs.Harry: Now, the only side that seems to be exclusive to the UK is actually just a little bowl of rice. For some reason, I couldn't find this on the US menu. If I was wrong, let me know.Joe: What everyone in the UK has been waiting for! [drumroll] Taco Bell breakfast, yes! I think, of all the fast-food breakfasts-es, Taco Bell's is the best. These are the items that you can get here in America, and they are all great. The cheesy toasted breakfast burrito. The hash brown toasted burrito. The grande toasted breakfast burrito. Another one I wanna point out here is the breakfast Crunchwrap Supreme. Of course, we all know this shape. Hexagon? They're like the regular burritos you would get at Taco Bell, but they have eggs in them. Sometimes they have bacon, a pico de gallo. They're all very good. Very, very good.Harry: I'm really sad that we don't have any breakfast items in the UK, but what we do have is churros for dessert. These can be served with a little pot of dulce de leche to dip in. And, honestly, I'm shocked that you guys don't have these. [crunching]Joe: For the US Taco Bell desserts, the one thing we got here you can't get in the UK are these Cinnabon Delights. They're like little cinnamon balls. You can get them in either an order of two or 12 or any number in between. Oh, my God. There's cream inside of these. I was not expecting that.Exclusive drinks in the US. This one is a dragon fruit freeze. That was like a Slurpee. You can also get Powerade. They got fruit punch Powerade on tap. Right here, pink lemonade. And for the [laughs] Baja Blast frie-- ah, fiends, they also have a Baja Blast freeze. Yuck. In the US, our Taco Bell also has iced coffee and iced tea.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>From calorie count to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between <keyword id="1718857" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Five-Guys">Five Guys</keyword> in the UK and the US.</li><li>Compared to some of the places that we reviewed on this show before, Five Guys is a more expensive option.</li><li>In our case, it seems as if Five Guys' tendency to overfill <keyword id="177068" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fries">fries</keyword> has been a bit overstated.</li></ul>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.Harry Kersh: From calorie count to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between Five Guys in the UK and the US. This is "<keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">Food</keyword> Wars."Harry: Burgers from a UK Five Guys come in two sizes. Joe Avella: Five Guys in the US also has two <keyword id="6433444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="burger">burger</keyword> sizes. Harry: Firstly we have the little, which is just one patty. Joe: And the regular, which is two patties. Harry: Now, our patties are supposed to be lighter than the US patties and should weigh 67 grams. We're gonna weigh one and find out if that's accurate. So, this patty actually weighed 52 grams, which is 15 grams less than what we're supposed to get. Joe: According to the US Five Guys website, they say that one of the patties should weigh 94 grams, or about 3.3 ounces. We will weigh a hamburger patty in the US Five Guys. That's about 52, 53 grams. It looks like our patties weigh just about the same as the ones in the UK. Harry: We're not sure if they measure it before or after cooking. Maybe it's before, and then some of the liquid leaves as it cooks, but either way, not quite what we're expecting.Joe: This right here is a hot dog from a US Five Guys. And before I measure it, what in the heck is this? Did you know this? They cut the hot dog in half? I hate that they cut this in half. Cursed image. OK, how long is this monstrosity? 6 1/4 inches for the hot dog. Harry: So, a hot dog from a UK Five Guys is about 6 inches in length. Now, like the burgers, this has an estimated weight, and it should weigh 146 grams if the website's ingredients information is correct. But ours actually weighs 154 grams, so we're actually getting more than expected. Joe: OK, let's weigh this thing before I throw it in the ocean. We're about a hair over 150. OK. I wanna talk to one of the Five Guys. Get me guy No. 3 or 4, I don't care. I demand to know what is going on with these hot dogs.Joe: A Five Guys chocolate milkshake in the US, I believe it's 12 ounces, let's see what it actually is here. This one's a little bit more, ooh, a little bit more melted. Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Oh, yeah. That's way more than 12, buddy. That's way more than 12. It is just over 450 milliliters. Almost 16 ounces. Harry: This is a milkshake from a UK Five Guys. We're gonna measure it to find out how much you get. Mm, bloop bloop bloop bloop. Oh, look how thick that is. Yes! I want it. Now, the UK portion size is advertised as 454 milliliters. We've got just over 400 here. If we scraped around the side, we could probably get a few more in there as well.Harry: Now, Five Guys in the UK is notorious for overfilling its fry portions. We also get three sizes, little, regular, and large. We ordered all three, and they came in one bag, and here's what we got. Little fries, regular fries, large fries, and this is the rest of the bag. Now, we're not sure which of these fries belongs to which of these portions, so we're gonna try and figure it out. Joe: In the US, we also have three sizes of fries at the Five Guys. The small, the regular, the large, and, yes, so many more fries. Look at that. So, all in all, Five Guys is very generous with the fries. Harry: I mean, I guess I'll start by filling each cup, and then try and portion this into, like, vague threes, I guess. Joe: Yes, that sounds right, I don't know if it is, but I'm just gonna follow Harry's lead on this one. Harry: So, this is roughly what we think would go with each of the portions. Now, in the UK, a regular fries is supposed to weigh 414 grams. We're gonna weigh the cup and then also the extras to see if what you get really is a bonus or if it actually all adds up to the supposed total. 165. Joe: So, first we'll do the scale, right? So, this is supposed to be 411 grams. Let's see what we got. What is this, 170? Woof, guys. That's not even close. Harry: So, our regular cup of fries actually only contained 165 grams, which is less than half of what you're supposed to get. We're gonna weigh the rest of the fries to see if that makes up the difference. So, even with all the bag fries, which we assigned to the regular portion, we're still only looking at 276 grams, which is well below the portion size you're supposed to be getting for a regular. Joe: Excellent idea, Harry, I will do the same. Now we are up to... 275? Still not even -- it's supposed 411? Harry: So, it looks like we've been a bit shortchanged on the fries. Because it was all given to us in one big bag, it's hard to tell which portion came out small. So what we're gonna do is add the little fries to this one, get a total figure for all three portions, and then figure out how much we've been shortchanged overall. So, we've done the maths, and between our large, regular, and little fries, including the bag fries, we only got 830 grams. However, we were supposed to get 1,220 grams, which means we've been shortchanged by roughly a third here. Frygate 2020! Joe: Technically, Harry, this is Frygate 2021. Check the release schedule. With the rest of the bag fries, the large, and the little, so, they gave us 851 grams of fries total. They're supposed to give us 1,225. Hey, Siri, 851 is what percentage of 1,225? Siri: About 69.4693%. Joe: 69%. Nice. Harry: So, at least in our case, it seems as if the generosity of Five Guys has been a bit overstated. Maybe they just overfill smaller containers so you kind of think you're getting more than you should be, whereas in reality, if you measure it all, you're actually maybe getting less.Joe: Let's compare the prices of both Five Guys and see who's getting the better deal. OK, USA, this hamburger costs $9.12. That is way too much money for this burger. Harry: A hamburger from a UK Five Guys will cost you 6 pounds 95, which is equivalent to $9.20. Joe: The prices do seem similar, but it's actually per gram 26% less in the US than it is in the UK. Harry: What about the fries? Well, in the UK, a large fries is 5 pounds 25, which comes to $6.95. Joe: In the US, our Five Guys large after tax is $7.06. You must be joking. Harry: If you do the maths for the fries, it turns out that the US is getting a better deal, but only fractionally. You guys get, like, 1% more value for your money when it comes to the large fries, so, not too mad about that one. Producer: A big draw is that when you're in Five Guys, they have just crates open with peanuts, and while you're waiting your food, you can just scoop some peanuts and just, like, crack the shells open - Joe: What do you even mean? So if you go into the store and you wait, you can eat, like, you can peel and eat peanuts and, what, throw the shells on the floor, like it's a saloon in the 1800s? Who cares? Especially if you're going there to eat, let me fill up in these cheap peanuts before I get this ridiculously priced food. Harry: Compared to some of the places that we reviewed on this show before, Five Guys is a more expensive option, but, I mean, particularly in the UK, I don't feel too mad about paying a bit more for a Five Guys than I might do for a meal at McDonald's. It's just more of a treat, but it does feel a bit more exotic, they've branded themselves as a kind of, like, American import, Americans-know-their-way- around-a-burger sort of thing. So if I go, I know that I'm getting something of a little bit higher quality than maybe a standard fast-food place, even if the prices are gonna cost me more. Joe: I hate Five Guys. The hot dog is ridiculous, I don't care about peanuts, this stuff is way overpriced, forget it.Joe: Let's take a look at the calories of the Five Guys <keyword id="381534" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cheeseburger">cheeseburger</keyword>. This has two patties, two slices of cheese, and a bun, and the total calories is 984. Harry: What about a UK cheeseburger? Well, this one comes to 756 calories, which is more than 200 calories less than the US burger. The US burger doesn't just have more calories, either; it's got pretty much more of everything else. It's got more fat, saturates, and sodium than a cheeseburger in the UK. In the UK, if they actually give you what's advertised on the website, a large portion of fries is a hefty 1,491 calories. But despite that, we still somehow end up with less sodium. Joe: Our large fry in the US is 1,314 calories. I also want to point out our fries come in lower than the UK in terms of fat content as well as saturates. And, finally, we have the drinks. This chocolate shake at a Five Guys in the US is 830 calories. Harry: A chocolate shake in the UK comes to slightly more, at 891 calories. Joe: So, what if we combine all three into a meal? So, a plain cheeseburger, regular fries, and a chocolate shake from Five Guys in the US totals at 2,767 calories. Yo, dog! Also, I think this is about $70. [laughs] Harry: The same meal in the UK? Well, that comes to a total of 2,769 calories, two calories more than in the US. The differences between the burger and the fries effectively cancel each other out.Harry: Let's start with the basics. Here's everything in a hamburger patty from a UK Five Guys. Ground beef. Joe: Here in the US, our burger patty is made up of ground beef. [crickets chirping] Harry: If you prefer to add cheese to your burger, here's what's in the cheese in the UK. Cheddar cheese, water, butter, cheese, milk proteins, whey powder, emulsifying salt , natural cheese flavoring, salt, lactic acid, sorbic acid, beta-carotene, paprika extract, and sunflower lecithin. Joe: Five Guys cheese here in the US is made up of: milk, whey, milk fat, milk protein concentrate, salt, calcium phosphate, sodium citrate, whey protein concentrate, sodium phosphate, sorbic acid, [error ping] apple-call-a-tent-all? What? Apo...car-oh-ten-all? Apocatarnenal. Annatto, enzymes, vitamin D3, and cheese cultures. Harry: The burger buns are also pretty similar. In the UK, a burger bun is made with: wheat flour, water, sugar, vegetable fat, milk, dry yeast, eggs, sesame seeds, salt, soya flour, calcium carbonate, and spirit vinegar. Joe: The bun in the US is made up of: water, salt, sugar, vegetable shortening, milk, eggs, bleached bread flour, yeast, and sesame seeds. Harry: Now, you'd think that the fries would be pretty similar in the two countries, and for the most part you'd be right. In the UK, the fries are made of potatoes, peanut oil, and salt. Joe: The fries at the Five Guys in the US are made from potatoes, refined peanut oil, and salt. Now, when they say "refined peanut oil," apparently the peanut oil in the UK is not refined. Here in the US it is. What that means is they do something with distillation or neutralization, I don't even know, but the reason they do it is to give it a better shelf life and a more uniform taste. This has been the greasiest "Food Wars" I've ever done. So they are very generous with the peanut oil on the fries and pretty much everything else. Harry: There are a few things to watch out for on the menu at Five Guys. For example, the pickles in the US. In the US, the pickles contain a food coloring called Yellow 5, or tartrazine. If this is added to foods in the European Union, they have to have a warning saying that they might cause hyperactivity in children. Joe: Yes, our pickles have a bunch of junk in it, so does the relish. Specifically, it is made up of: cucumbers, corn syrup, water, high-fructose corn syrup, vinegar, salt, xanthan gum, 0.1% of sodium benzoate as a preservative, calcium chloride, alum, natural flavors, polysorbate 80, Yellow No. 5, and maltol.Harry: In our shortest exclusives section yet, here is everything you can only find on the menu at a UK Five Guys. Joe: And here are all the exclusive Five Guys menu items in the US. Harry: Let's start with the burger. There's only one option in the UK that you won't be able to find in the US, and that is HP Sauce. I won't go into too much detail in case Joe accuses me of Brit-splaining again, but for those who don't know, HP sauce is like a - Joe: The only customization in the US that you can't get in the UK is actually something that everyone in the United States knows exactly what I'm talking about, and that is A1 steak sauce. It looks a lot like the HP brown sauce, but it is not. It doesn't taste anything like it. It is the most popular steak sauce. Ad: A1. It's how steak is done. Joe: I don't know if it even exists outside of the US. Harry: The rest of our exclusive options come as drinks, such as <keyword id="803112" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Milkshakes">milkshakes</keyword>. We have a biscuit shake, which is flavored with Biscoff biscuits, which are those little caramel-flavored cookies which you get on the side of a tea or coffee. Then we have three dessert shake options, which are milkshakes flavored with things which kind of combine to replicate famous desserts. So, here we have a millionaire's shortbread milkshake. Here we have a banoffee pie milkshake. And here we have a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. Joe: Now, for the last thing, the only shake you can get in the US that you can't get in the UK is this, it is the Oreo, listen to me when I say it, let me finish before you start typing, an Oreo Double Stuf milkshake. Yes, you guys have the Oreo shake there, and I think you also have an Oreo cream shake there too, but this is the only Oreo Double Stuf shake. If you don't have Oreo Double Stuf in the UK, they're what they sound like, Oreos with twice as much filling. This is the last thing we're shooting today, and I've been waiting for this all day. Holy s---, this is so good. [producer laughing] Guys, I'm not playing, this might've turned the tides on how I feel about Five Guys. I'm not kidding, this is so good. I'm finishing this. I don't care how sick it makes me, I'm drinking it. Harry: And last but by no means least, in the UK, you can wash your burgers down with... a range of beers. Cheers. Joe: Yeah, well, they don't serve beer at our Five Guys, but I brought my own. Cheers, my man. Ah. It is very warm.Joe: It's a half a hot dog. That's split? It's like, I'm still like, what? I'm, like, I'm shook by that. This is why people on the internet now are like, "I think a hot dog's a sandwich." Well, when you serve it like that, like with the meat cut in half like that, it's like, yeah, it kinda looks, but it's not! It's a hot dog. And you don't cut it down the middle like that. It's ridiculous.
