In Hollywood </em>is inspired by a real life radio station — KHJ Radio. <br /></li><li>Tarantino scrapped three years worth of collected recorded to shift gears for the movie's soundtrack to be more like the radio station. <br /></li><li>He explains that the radio was an important part of society in 1969 when people didn't turn the volume down for ads or change channels looking for other songs.<br /></li></ul>Quentin Tarantino's <em>Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood </em>is being <a href="http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood/">lauded</a> for being a movie that effectively transports movie-goers to Los Angeles in 1969.<br /><br />And, a large part of creating that experience is the movie's soundtrack. It is inspired by recordings of an actual radio channel from the time — even though that wasn't the original plan for the Brad Pitt and Leonardo di Caprio starrer.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="Once Upon A Time... <br />In Spotify's new <em>Quentin Tarantino </em>podcast, the director discloses how he has been collecting his own snippets of music for the soundtrack but instead completely scrapped that plan once he heard over seven hours KHJ Radio over and over again.<br />Listening to the recordings, he realised that wanted a KHJ Radio vibe for his movie. <br /><br />"That's what it was like in Southern California. <br />Listening to KHJ Radio is also when Tarantino decided that he liked the idea of the radio jockeys being the period narrators. <br /><br />Tarantino is known for his haunting soundtracks. His famous movie Kill Bill had revived Nancy Sinatra's Bang Bang, giving the 70s song a new edge. <br /><br /><strong>Capturing the sound of KHJ<br /></strong><br />While <em>Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood </em>tell its story in 1969 — the soundtrack isn't inspired by the greatest hits of the time.<br /><br />Tarantino explains that KHJ Radio had its own way of coming up with the Top 40 which didn't mean repeating the Billboard Top 40. Instead, KHJ used to take into account what was popular in the record stores, what their listeners requested and inputs from the KHJ people themselves. <br /><br />In the end, some of the songs on the radio weren't necessarily popular all over the US, but they were definitely popular in Los Angeles. This is the edge that this radio station's soundtracks will bring to the movie. <br /><br />So, when Tarantino was working on the soundtrack for <em>Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood, </em>he admits to gravitating towards sounds that resonated with the California KHJ sound that didn't break out onto the national stage.<br /><br />KHJ Radio boomed to success in 1965 with radio jockey, Bill Drake's formula — less talk, less commercials and more music. And, another thing that was unique about KHJ radio was how it could turn its commercials into songs that sounded a lot like the tracks that were being played.<br /><br />This is reflected in Heaven Sent perfume's jingle called <em>Suddenly </em>that features in <em>Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood's </em>soundtrack. It's one of the best song cues in the movie, according to Tarantino.

There's a lot of feet in a lot of good directors' movies. That's just good direction. Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it."</p><p>Nearly every Tarantino movie features feet in some capacity, beginning with Uma Thurman's barefoot walk and dance scene in "Pulp Fiction" and continuing through to an over-abundance of shots of Margot Robbie and Margaret Qualley's bare feet in "<keyword id="12213660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood" source="Orion">Once Upon a Time in Hollywood</keyword>."</p><p>Those scenes were so noticeable that the star of that movie, Brad Pitt, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E06W_56YFY">jokingly thanked Robbie and Qualley's feet in his SAG acceptance speech</a> for best supporting actor.</p><p>In between those movies, "Kill Bill: Vol 1" featured an entire scene of Uma Thurman trying to wiggle her big toe, while "Inglourious Basterds" had a scene of Christoph Waltz slipping a shoe onto Diane Kruger's foot in what seemed like a nod to "Cinderella."</p><p>Tarantino also got in on the foot action himself: in 1996's "From Dusk Till Dawn," Tarantino appears in a scene where <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMzPuF45oac">he licks the feet of Salma Hayek's character.</a></p><p>Some actresses have spoken about having their feet displayed so much in Tarantino's movies. Robbie said that <a href="https://uproxx.com/movies/margot-robbie-feet-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-quentin-tarantino/">she enjoyed walking around barefoot</a>, while <a href="https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/810506/diane-kruger-s-inglorious-basterds-interview/">Kruger said that Tarantino made sure she got a pedicure before her scene</a>, and <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2019/07/margaret-qualley-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-interview-1202161917/">Qualley was very reluctant to get her feet out for the camera.</a></p><p>"I genuinely was like, 'Quentin, this is a bad idea. I don't have good feet,'" Qualley told <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2019/07/margaret-qualley-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-interview-1202161917/">IndieWire</a>. "We had a big debate about it, me, Quentin, and Brad, with them trying to be like, 'You're fine,' and me being like, 'No, guys, really, look, these are not good.'"</p>

Quentin Tarantino says abundance of feet in his movies is 'just good direction'

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Perhaps among the most surprising bits of news&#xa0;that flew under the radar at&#xa0;San Diego Comic-Con this year was that Italian composer Ennio Morricone <a href="http://deadline.com/2015/07/ennio-morricone-hateful-8-score-quentin-tarantino-1201474388/">will score Quentin Tarantino's upcoming western</a> "The Hateful Eight." Tarantino <a href="https://youtu.be/yYtgzekqUG4">shared the news</a> at the end of the panel for "The Hateful Eight," which comes out this Christmas.</p><p>This is huge for many reasons, given that Tarantino doesn't normally use an original score for his films, instead relying on an eclectic mix of old movie soundtracks and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGqB6JIUzBo">pop songs</a>.&#xa0;<span>Meanwhile, Morricone once stated&#xa0;publicly that he never wanted to work with Tarantino.&#xa0;</span>This shows just how significant it is that Tarantino will be working with Morricone.&#xa0;</p><p>At the age of 86, Morricone has a long and storied career in the film industry. His claim to fame is his collaboration with director Sergio Leone. With Leone, they invented the Spaghetti Western genre, a wave of westerns made by Italian filmmakers in the 1960s and 1970s.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Morricone scored Leone's Dollars Trilogy, which consists of "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." It was these films that turned Clint Eastwood into an international movie star. Morricone's music is as big of a star in these films as Eastwood himself. It is his score that brought epic scope and tension to the incredible final showdown in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" which has now become one of the most famous scenes&#xa0;in cinematic history:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Morricone would also score Leone's masterpiece "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0S9e6ITZFw">Once Upon a Time in the West</a>" as well as his underrated gangster epic "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj5Xczethmw">Once Upon a Time in America</a>."</p><p class="embed-spacer">Those who are longtime fans of Tarantino know that his films are basically cobbled together tributes to all of his favorite films. One of his biggest influences is the Spaghetti Western genre.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">One of the many ways he pays influence to the genre is by sampling&#xa0;Morricone's&#xa0;music.</p><p class="embed-spacer">He sampled <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXeBxtyF-5U">"L'Arena" from "The Mercenary"</a> excellently when depicting The Bride's (Uma Thurman) escape from a coffin in "Kill Bill: Vol. 2":</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Meanwhile, in "Inglourious Basterds," he used a sampling of "The Verdict" from "The Big Gundown" to indicate&#xa0;the imminent showdown between&#xa0;self-proclaimed "Jew Hunter" Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) and farmer Perrier LaPadite (Denis Menochet):</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">"The Hateful Eight" isn't&#xa0;technically the first time Tarantino and Morricone will&#xa0;work together, as Tarantino has used a lot of Morricone's music in his films.&#xa0;However, after Morricone <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/italian-composer-morricone-slams-tarantino-428954">publicly trashed Tarantino</a>, it seemed unlikely that there would ever be an actual collaboration between the two of them, which makes this weekend's news all the more surprising.</p><p class="embed-spacer">There might be no more fitting film for the two of them to work together than "The Hateful Eight."&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">"The Hateful Eight" will be the first time Morricone&#xa0;first time working on a western in 40 years. Meanwhile, this is the first true western Tarantino will direct.</p><p class="embed-spacer"></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p class="embed-spacer">Tarantino's&#xa0;genre-bending oeuvre usually bend towards the wild west, and it seems like over the years he has been slowly building up to making his own true entry in the genre. In 2003 and 2004,&#xa0;The "Kill Bill" films mixed in western elements with samurai and kung fu. In 2009, "Inglourious Basterds" depicted World War II like the wild west. Meanwhile, 2012's "Django Unchained" could qualify as a western for the Texas scenes alone.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">It might have been hard for Tarantino to make a "real" western, given the long-standing myth that the western is dead in Hollywood, despite the success of such recent genre entries as "True Grit" (which grossed <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=truegrit2010.htm">$252.3 million worldwide</a>) and "Slow West." Tarantino is clearly an expert on the genre, and having Morricone on board will add a touch of authenticity to "The Hateful Eight."&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">Morricone's music&#xa0;remains legendary to this day, and gets used and parodied all over the place. However, it has been a while since he has commanded the music for another classic. Tarantino is known for reviving the careers of actors from John Travolta to Bruce Willis. Nobody ever believed Quentin Tarantino and this legendary composer would work together - now it's happening

He was 70.</li><li>A statement on the group's Facebook said Thomas "passed away peacefully in his sleep" on August 7.</li><li>The group's most popular singles include "Ladies Night," "Get Down On It," and "Celebration." </li></ul><p>Musician Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, a co-founder of the legendary funk band Kool &amp; the Gang, has died at the age of 70.</p><p>A statement posted to the group's official Facebook page announced that Thomas "passed away peacefully in his sleep" on August 7, in New Jersey. No cause of death was given in the statement. </p><p>"An original member of Kool &amp; the Gang, Dennis was known as the quintessential cool cat in the group, loved for his hip clothes and hats, and his laid-back demeanor," the statement read. "A huge personality while also an extremely private person, Dennis was the alto saxophone player, flutist, percussionist, as well as master of ceremonies at the band's shows."</p><p>Thomas founded Kool &amp; the Gang in 1964 alongside several teenage friends, including brothers Robert "Kool" and Ronald "Khalis" Bell, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, and Ricky West. The group was initially named The Jazziacs and went through several iterations before settling on Kool &amp; the Gang. </p><p> Over the decades, the group released 25 studio albums, earned two Grammys, seven American <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">Music</keyword> Awards, and 25 Top Ten R&amp;B hits.</p><p>The group's mix of funk and jazz arrangements has become one of the popular, influential, and heavily sampled sounds in contemporary music and has been featured in several film soundtracks, including "Saturday Night Fever," "Rocky," and Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction."</p><p>Some of the group's most popular singles include "Ladies Night," "Get Down On It," and "Celebration," which was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording registry last year. In 2014, the group was awarded the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award and received a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame the following year. </p><p>They are also included in installations at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and the Grammy Museum in New Jersey. </p><p>Earlier this year, Thomas performed with Kool &amp; the Gang at a 4th of July concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. This was his last performance with the group. He is survived by his wife, Phynjuar Saunders Thomas, three children, and "and a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren." </p><p>Thomas, born Feb. 9, 1951, in Orlando, Florida.</p>

Dennis 'Dee Tee' Thomas, founder of the legendary funk band Kool & the Gang, has died aged 70

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>There are countless anecdotes about the auteuristic quirks of director Christopher Nolan, whose "Interstellar" comes out this week. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For some new ones, check out an </span><a href="http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/nov/04/-sp-christopher-nolan-interstellar-rebooted-blockbuster">in-depth profile by The Guardian's Tom Shone</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, which includes an amazing story about how Nolan got frequent partner Hans Zimmer to write the theme for his space epic.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Chris said to me, in his casual way. 'So, Hans, if I wrote one page of something, didn't tell you what it was about, just give you one page, would you give me one day of work?'" Zimmer told Shone. "'Whatever you came up with on that one day would be fine.'"</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Zimmer agreed and then one day received a one-page typewritten letter. Per Shone:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">On the paper was a short story, no more than a precis, about a father who leaves his child to do an important job. It contained two lines of dialogue - "I'll come back" "When?" - and quoted something Zimmer had said a year before, during a long conversation with Nolan and his wife at the Wolesley restaurant in London. ... "There was no movie to be made, there was no movie to discuss, we were talking about our children," said Zimmer, who has a 15-year-old son. "I said, 'once your children are born, you can never look at yourself through your eyes any more, you always look at yourself through their eyes."</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Zimmer spent a day composing the theme and then showed it to Nolan, and Nolan loved it. It was only then that Nolan revealed what kind of movie he had in mind. As Zimmer told Shone:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>"I asked him, 'Well, yes, but what is the movie?' And he started describing this huge, epic tale of space and science and humanity, on this epic scale. I'm going, 'Chris, hang on, I've just written this highly personal thing, you know?' He goes, 'Yes, but I now know where the heart of the movie is'. Everything about this movie was personal.'"</span></span></p>
